India’s Merchandise Export has reached almost $ 390 bn & will certainly cross $ 400 bn in current fiscal : Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal said that India’s merchandise exports have reached almost USD 390 billion as of March 14th and will certainly cross USD 400 billion in the current fiscal. He was addressing the Atmanirbhar Excellence Awards and 7th Technology Summit 2022, organized by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) in New Delhi. He added that India’s auto components industry had,

for the first time, recorded a trade surplus of USD 600 million. It may be noted that India’s Automotive Industry is worth more that USD 100 billion and contributes 8% of country’s total export and accounts for 2.3% of India's GDP and is set to become the 3rd largest in the world by 2025. The Minister appreciated the resilient auto industry players who adapted and evolved to keep the industry going despite the five Cs, challenges of COVID-19, container shortages, chip shortages, commodity prices and conflict. MSC joins White House ow initiative to improve Supply Chain Data-sharing Relying on a common digital infrastructure to connect the supply chain is vital to moving goods more efficiently. So, MSC is delighted to join Freight Logis cs Op miza on Works (FLOW): a new ini a ve led by the US Department of Transporta on to improve informa on-sharing between key stakeholders. GENEVA: MSC is pleased to be part of the Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) datasharing initiative, launched at the White House on 15 March 2022. This major project will help to clear supply chain bottlenecks by improving freight information exchange between key stakeholders – leading to faster delivery time and reduced costs for consumers. A diverse taskforce representing many stakeholders FLOW includes 18 initial participants, with the aim of welcoming more in future. Representing diverse perspectives across the supply chain, partners include US-based port authorities, terminal operators, private businesses, logistics and warehousing companies, as well as the ocean carriers MSC and CMA CGM. The FLOW partners will work together with the US Administration to develop a more efficient and transparent way of sharing information. The idea is to create a new digital tool, where each company can share accurate, cargo-related data in real time. “We are pleased to join and support the FLOW initiative led by the US Department of Transportation as we strongly believe that a common and interoperable digital infrastructure throughout the container shipping industry is a critical step to make supply chains more efficient, secure and resilient. Collaborating with governments and other key industry stakeholders is of

paramount importance to MSC and there is no doubt that this initiative will strengthen the foundation for the seamless, end-to-end exchange of information we all need to keep global trade moving today – and tomorrow,” said André Simha, Chief Digital & Information Ofcer at MSC. The first voyage is scheduled from HAIPHONG on March 27th, 2022. The CI7 service, which connects South China- Vietnam – East India directly will provide clients with better transit time and more service options. It will also strengthen Wan Hai Lines’ current services to better serve customers’ needs.

driving the region’s 2030 water agendas. Delving deep into key challenges facing water scarcity, the Forum explored the latest solutions that can enable sustainable and environment-friendly water desalination and ensure sufficient water supply for the region’s growing population. Bahri forayed into the desalination sector in 2019, when it signed a 20-year agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC). The contract involves establishing three floating stations to desalinate seawater and transfer it to the stations’ desalination tanks, producing 150,000 cubic meters of water a day. The company’s relocatable floating desalination barges ensure consistently high availability levels and comply with the best local and international standards. Located three kilometers from the shore, the barges feature cutting-edge water treatment processes involving seawater intake screens, integrated self-cleaning strainer with ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis treatment and remineralization. The platforms, which are fitted on specially adapted barges that are over 123.3 m long and 36.6 m wide, have a modular design and therefore, can be quickly and easily deployed to other locations when needed. Notably, they are designed to minimize potential environmental impact on the coastal area and preserve diversification of the shallow sea ecosystem.

Supply chain crisis compounds inflation in 2022 : DP World • A report commissioned by DP World, produced in partnership by Economist Impact, finds that supply shortages will increase infla onary pressure in 2022 • Group Chairman and CEO of DP World says supply chain bo lenecks will not clear un l 2023 • 29% of companies that export are concerned about the risk of rising infla on due to supply chain disrup on • 30% of companies expect increasing transport costs to limit export-led growth in 2022, contribu ng to higher infla on • Just-in- me shipping is dying with over a quarter of companies now holding onto stock for three months DUBAI: New research reveals that supply chain issues are exacerbating inflation. The study commissioned by DP World, the leading provider of smart logistics solutions, found that during 2022 trade is expected to expand further, due to a 16% increase in exports during 2021 and imports by 12%. Production levels have been unable to keep pace with demand leading to supply shortages and will limit import growth in 2022. Commenting on the report’s findings, DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said: “The report is evidence that rising freight rates, and low production levels, coupled with a volatile social-economic situation in Europe, will keep inflation high in 2022 as companies navigate a risky trading environment. But supply chains are adapting, and executives are positive about the future of trade, which will prove durable in the near to medium-term despite any inflationary fears.” The sur vey of 3,000 respondents, produced in partnership with Economist Impact captured perspectives of company leaders across the world. In addition to rising inflation, geopolitical tensions between the US and China continue to concern executives with 30% claiming that

ongoing trade war between the US and China is the top reason to be pessimistic about global trade. Despite the apprehension, and low production levels limiting imports, international revenue expanded for 68% of companies exporting freight in 2021, compared with 42% in 2020. 35% attributed that growth to an expansion of exports into new markets, as companies took advantage of new trade routes created by the pandemic. To cope with the pandemic and ease inflationary pressures, companies are also changing their strategic outlook. 48% now said diversifying their supplier base is their primary reconfiguration strategy, with efforts focussed on sourcing raw materials (24%) and managing shipping lines and logistics (21%). The highest cited reason for optimism for global trade was the growth of technology to ease supply chain issues, particularly the adoption of 5G to increase connectivity. Digitalisation can also streamline operations and increase efficiencies in trade. 67% of companies in the industrial sector are already using digital platforms for supply chain management. Businesses now have greater flexibility to move cargo faster, track progress in real time and automate customs clearance processes, helping address non-tariff trade barriers.

The recently approved Semicon India Programme with a budget of 76,000 Crores would help reduce import dependence and eventually help us become Atmanirbhar in the arena of chips, he said. He added that the nimble Government and agile Industry working together collectively could capture markets across the world. Highlighting India’s capabilities in the field of auto components manufacturing, the Minister asked automakers to make greater use of Indian made components. Stating that the Government held back stringent norms regarding import substitution due to Covid-19 and industry assurances on securing equal market access, the Minister urged automakers to buy local and substitute imports. Congratulating the automotive for managing tech transitions smoothly, he pointed out that India could no longer afford to be closed and protective but will have to open up our markets along with striving to achieve greater penetration of global markets. Spelling out the opportunities for the future of mobility, Shri Goyal said that mobility of tomorrow would be dependent on the 7 Cs, - Common, Connected, Convenient, Congestionfree, Charged, Clean and Cutting edge. Shri Goyal gave a 4-point call for

action to the auto components industry for to be future ready. He asked them to invest more in R&D, especially emobility, especially and battery tech. He urged them to disrupt existing targets, set higher benchmarks for performance and aspire to take 5 Indian companies in top 50 global automotive suppliers club. He encouraged them to identify core competencies and isolate key areas to reduce import reliance. He also called for designing world-class quality standards in the automotive sector. Quoting the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Shri Goyal said that mobility is the next frontier in our fight against climate change. He asserted India was poised at the cusp of an emobility revolution that in the next 15 years and mobility landscape is expected to undergo a deep structural change. He asked auto-makers to look upon sustainability as an opportunity and not a challenge. He asked the automotive industry to work on improving the e-mobility ecosystem, including fuel cell vehicles with Hydrogen storage, higher LithiumIon battery capacity at low price and better charging infrastructure. He cautioned automakers that the cost of not investing in innovation and evolving to meet the needs of the future would be obsolescence. Referring to the budgetary push to the EV industry, the Minister said that India has the potential to become a hub

for EVs and Integrated Circuits (IC) technology. Expressing concern that lower volume of production would prohibit scale of production thus affecting business viability, he called for the promotion of scale of production in emobility. Stating that the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has set the targets for Amrit Kaal, - the next 25 years, Shri Goyal said we cannot afford to rest on the laurels of the last 75 years as we celebrate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ this year. He added that the greater challenge before us, the greater responsibility that each one of us has on our shoulders is that in the next 25 years, the ‘Amrit Kaal’, as the Prime Minister has called it, is to make India a prosperous nation, a developed nation, a nation where every single citizen, especially the marginalized, is a stakeholder in the country’s progress and development. GMB to get Rs. 2,037cr for Port Connectivity GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has secured an in-principle approval for Rs 2,037 crore to finish infrastructure works of port connectivity. The initiatives, on which work is predicted to start out shortly, will give a serious push to port-led improvement within the State. The Government has taken the following steps to increase India’s exports: I. The mid-term review (2017) of the Foreign Trade Policy (2015-20) was car ried out and cor rective

measures were undertaken. ii. Foreign Trade Policy (2015-20) extended by one year i.e. upto 31-3-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. iii. Assistance provided through several schemes to promote exports, namely, Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) and Market Access Initiatives (MAI) Scheme. iv. A Central Sector Scheme, ‘Transport and Marketing Assistance for Specified Agriculture Products’ was launched for providing assistance for the international component of freight to mitigate the freight disadvantage for the export of agriculture products. v. Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme and Rebate of State and Central Levies and Taxes (RoSCTL) Scheme have been implemented with effect from 01.01.2021. vi. Common Digital Platform for Certificate of Origin has been launched to facilitate trade and increase Free Trade Agreement (FTA) utilization by exporters. vii. 12 Champion Services Sectors have been identified for promoting and diversifying services exports by pursuing specific action plans. viii. Districts as Export Hubs has been launched by identifying products with export potential in each district, addressing bottlenecks for exporting these products and supporting local exporters/manufacturers to generate employment in the district. ix. Active role of Indian missions abroad towards promoting India’s trade, tourism, technology and investment goals has been enhanced. x. Package announced in light of the COVID pandemic to support domestic industry through various banking and financial sector relief measures, especially for MSMEs, which constitute a major share in exports.

Attention not paid to land port development after Independence, but good progress in last 10 years: Amit Shah NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that while the land port development had been ignored in the country since Independence much progress has been seen in the past 10 years, boosting the strength of the economy. Shah, speaking on the occasion of the 10th Foundation Day of the ‘Land Ports Authority of India’, said that while India should have focussed on improving road transport and land port after Independence but the due priority was given in the last 10 years following which unprecedented positive changes have been seen. “In the last 10 years, the Land Ports Authority of India has overseen unprecedented developmental work,” said Shah. He also stated that “India faces different challenges and opportunities at land borders with seven neighbouring countries”.

Shah underlined that India’s trade corridors are very essential. “We face different challenges and opportunities at our land borders with seven countries (China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Nepal & Bangladesh). We have strong relations with Bangladesh and it is reflected in the trade corridor with the neighbouring country. Our trade relations with Bangladesh are evolving,” said Shah. He added, “Almost 600 years ago, India and China had trade relations across the world.” The Home Minister said, “The developmental work initiated by the Authority in the last 10 years is being appreciated by everyone.” Shah also stated that “the feature of the Authority is not only to check bill of lading for business activity but promote the economic activity without comprising the security of the country”.

JSW PTPL loads highest ever iron ore in cape vessel PARADIP: JSW Paradip Terminal Private Limited (JSW PTPL) loaded highest ever of 1,41,200 tonnes of iron ore in a cape vessel ‘MV Star Lyra’ recently. The cargo was shipped by JSW Steel Ltd and this is the record-breaking iron ore loaded in a single vessel in Paradip Port since its inception. JSW Infrastructure and JSW Steel’s initiative has opened up the opportunities for the port users to ship iron ore & pellets in cape vessels at JSW PTPL to reduce the logistics cost. Also, JSW Paradip East Quay Coal Terminal commenced its commercial operations of 30 MTPA fully mechanized coal loading facility at Paradip Port on March 15, 2022. The terminal was inaugurated by P L Harnath (Chairman of Paradip Port) and Arun Maheshwari (JMD, JSW Infrastructure Ltd) in the presence of senior officials from APGENCO, NTECL, Sembcorp Energy India Limited, Chettinad Logistics etc. The terminal has berthed its first Panamax vessel ‘MV Captian P. Egglezos’ for loading of approximately 76,000 tonnes of thermal coal for Andhra Pradesh Power Development

Company Limited. JSW Paradip East Quay Coal Terminal shall be the prime infrastructure facility for the coastal thermal plant power producers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka etc. to move coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) to the end users.

Impact of Eastern European events on supply chains NEW DELHI: Early t h i s w e e k , t h e F I ATA M u l t i m o d a l Tr a n s p o r t Institute (MTI) came together to discuss the impacts of the ongoing events in Ukraine on freight forwarding and logistics across sea, rail and road transport. Beyond the dramatic human consequences to which the sector is particularly moved, global supply chains, already weakened by the effects of the pandemic and the ongoing maritime crisis, are being significantly

impacted. Issues cited include driver shortages, difficulties to transport cargo within the affected region, and capacity issues. Rising fuel prices are expected to be a challenge for the industry as a whole. It was noted that multimodal solutions are key to ensuring the flow of goods around the affected area throughout this conflict, with border crossings reportedly being possible through rail transport across Moldova and the Port of Galati, or through Romania which provides port access.

Trans-Caspian routes are expected to play a key role. F I ATA m e m b e r s s h o u l d b e aware of the sanctions imposed by certain countries in response to the conflict, and should ensure that they consult the relevant government pages on a regular basis. Currently, countries imposing related sanctions include, inter alia: Australia, European Union, United Kingdom, and United States. It is understood that further sanctions are under contemplation.

Indo-Bangladesh protocol route can help Assam become tea export hub: Tea Association GUWAHATI: Land-locked Assam can become an export hub for tea if the beverage is shipped out through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade route. The recent arrival of cargo vessels from Patna to Guwahati, via the protocol route, has given tea growers a hope that Guwahati can become a hub for the tea trade. At present, most of the tea produced in the region is transported by road to Kolkata for export.

"To achieve this export feat, proper hand-holding by the Centre for at least five years will be required and a special scheme may be devised under the g o v e r n m e n t ' s A c t E a s t Po l i c y initiative," Bidyananda Barkakoty, A d v i s e r t o N o r t h E a s t e r n Te a Association, said in a memorandum to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her recent visit to the region for a post-Budget interactions with industrialists and stakeholders.

If India can achieve export volumes of 300 million kgs annually, a large part of the industry's issues will automatically get resolved, the Memorandum said. "Though 300 million kgs export of tea from India is easier said than done but it is not impossible. "There is potential for tea producers of Assam to export directly from their factories instead of exporting through merchant exporters based outside Assam," it said.

In a 1st, Indian trader exports goods to Uzbek via Pak and Afghanistan NEW DELHI: In a first, a private trader in India has exported commercial goods to Uzbekistan through Pakistan and Afghanistan in a historic trade activity linking the four countries, according to a media report. Trucks carrying 140 tonnes of cargo, mostly sugar from India, departed Kabul on Wednesday, 16 March for the Uzbek capital Tashkent, the Voice of America reported recently. The shipment arrived in the Afghan capital a day earlier from Pakistan via the Torkham border crossing between the

countries, a spokesperson of the Taliban's Ministry of Industry and Commerce Maulana Zaheer was quoted as saying in the report. The ministry organised a special ceremony to facilitate the transit of the Indian goods, hailing it as a major step towards turning Afghanistan into a key trade link between Central and South Asia. The commercial cargo originated from Mumbai and travelled through the Karachi seaport in Pakistan earlier this month before being trucked to its Uzbek importer under a recently inked bilateral

transit trade agreement between Pakistan and Uzbekistan, a Pakistani official told the state-owned American radio broadcaster. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the agreement along with several other documents during his two-day official visit to Islamabad in early March. The Pakistani official emphasised that the Uzbekistan-bound Indian commercial consignment was a privately-arranged activity under the agreement and had no government involvement from any of the four countries.

EU hikes tariffs on India, Indonesia Stainless Steel imports BRUSSELS: The European Union will increase tariffs on stainless steel products from India and Indonesia after determining they benefited from unfair subsidies, including some from China under its Belt and Road investment programme. The European Commission, which conducted the investigation, has set the anti-subsidy duties on stainless steel coldrolled flat products at rates of between 4.3% and 21.4%, the EU official journal

said recently. They will add to anti-dumping tariffs already in place. The new rates for India's Jindal Stainless Ltd and Jindal Stainless Hisar Ltd are 4.3%, taking the total tariff to 14.3%. The Commission said the subsidies took the form of preferential loans, duty exemptions and cheap provision of raw materials, partly because of export restrictions for those materials.

Indonesia also benefited from subsidies to help build up its stainless steel industry from China, which in return benefited from taking up a larger share of Indonesia's nickel ore exports. This is the European Union's second investigation into trans-national Chinese subsidies. In 2020, the bloc imposed duties on glass fibre fabrics and products from Chinese companies or joint venture operations in Egypt.

Forex reserves decline $9.65 bn to $622.27 bn MUMBAI: The country’s foreign exchange reserves declined USD 9.646 billion to USD 622.275 billion in the week ended March 11, according to the latest data from the RBI. In the previous week ended March 4, the reserves rose USD 394 million to USD 631.92 billion. It touched a lifetime high of

USD 642.453 billion in the week ended September 3, 2021. FCA decreased by USD 11.108 billion to USD 554.359 billion in the week ended March 11. Gold reserves increased USD 1.522 billion to USD 43.842 billion in the reporting week, the data showed.

The special drawing rights (SDRs) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) dipped by USD 53 million to USD 18.928 billion, the RBI said. The country’s reserve position with the IMF decreased by USD 7 million to USD 5.146 billion in the reporting week, the data showed.

DCI inks historic Ship Building Agreement for 1st Make in India in construction of 1st Beagle Series 12 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger at CSL

VISAKHAPATNAM: Dredging Corporation of India has signed a historic Ship Building Agreement for the First Make in India Project for Construction of First Beagle Series 12 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger of 12000 Cubic Meter capacity at Cochin Shipyard Limited today in presence of Union Minister of Ports Shipping & Waterways & Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, MoS Shri Shripad Naik, and Secretary for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Dr Sanjeev Ranjan . Speaking on the occasion Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said the Ministry noting the importance of dredging for operation of Ports has issued Dredging Guidelines for Major Ports. He said the need for sufficient dredgers is of utmost importance for timely completion of dredging and the new dredgers would be able to bring in the much needed efficiency and timely completion of dredging. He said this in turn would enable smooth operation of vessels. Shri Sonowal said the dredger built under the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ concept is one of the largest initiatives under Atmanirbhar Bharat and is a true reflection of international Collaboration for Make in India. He said the Ministry under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi would be able to fulfil the objectives of the Maritime India Vision, 2030 with well equipped dredgers for operation of ports to bring down logistic cost of the cargo. Shri Sonowal said that this Ship Building Agreement would also benefit from the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SFAP) (2016) of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways for Indian Shipyards for shipbuilding contracts secured between 01.04.2016 and 31.03.2026. Financial

assistance is granted under this policy to Indian Shipyards equal to 17% of the lower of “Contract Price” or the “Fair Price” or “actual payments received”, whichever is least.He said a provision of Rs. 4,000 Crore has been made for ten-year period, viz. 2016-2026. Shri Sonowal also stated that the Ministry of PSW is working hard towards achieving the goals laid out by the Prime Minister under the “Waste-to-Wealth” initiative. He said the Ministry has issued Dredging Guidelines at Major Ports to ensure that the dredge material has to be taken up for recycling and reuse based on scientific study. This will enable to employ sustainable dredging disposal mechanism and promote waste to wealth. He lauded the initiative of Cochin Port Trust which has been able to extract the dredged material and earn precious revenue by auction of dredge material. He stated that Paradip Port has been utilising 1 million cubic meter of dredged material for reclamation of land for Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. Further, the Visakhapatnam Port and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port has been using part of dredged material for beach nourishment. Centre focuses on promoting exports of GI-tagged niche Agricultural products NEW DELHI: In a bid to promote exports of locally sourced Geographical Indications (GI) tagged agricultural products, Centre has been striving to identify new products and new export destinations. While Darjeeling Tea and Basmati Rice are the two popular GI-tagged agricultural products of India, which have ready markets across the globe, there is a host of GI-tagged products in various corners of the country which have niche but loyal customers and need to be marketed properly to reach more potential buyers. In line with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, the Centre, through Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been facilitating trial shipments into new markets world wide for products such as Kala Namak rice, Naga Mircha, Assam Kaji Nemu, Bangalore Rose Onion, Nagpur Oranges, GI varieties of Mangoes, GI-tagged Shahi Litchi, Bhalia wheat, Madurai Malli, BardhamanMihidana and Sitabhog, Dahanu Gholvad Sapota, Jalgaon Banana, Vazhakulam Pineapple, Marayoor Jaggery, etc. Notable shipments of GI products in 2021 included export of Naga Mircha (King Chilli) from Nagaland to UK, Black Rice from Manipur and Assam to the United Kingdom, Assam Lemon to the United Kingdom and Italy, three GI varieties of Mango (Fazli, Khirsapati, and Laxmanbhog) from West Bengal and one GI variety of Mango (Zardalu) from Bihar to Bahrain and Qatar. Around 30 kgs of a sample shipment of Joynagar Moa, a sweetmeat delicacy from South 24 Pargana district of West Bengal was sent via Kolkata airport to Bahrain.

Subsequent to the sample shipment, further orders for Joynagar Moa were received from Bahrain. In a major thrust to exports of GI-tagged products from Bihar, the first shipment of 524 Kg GI tagged Shahi Litchi was exported from Muzaffarpur district of Bihar to London in May 2021. The year also witnessed the export of GI tagged Banaganapalle Mango from Andhra Pradesh to South Korea. The Government has placed great emphasis on connecting farmer producer organisations (FPOs), food producer companies (FPCs) and exporters with international business communities to create an export hub in Varanasi, especially for GI-tagged agricultural products. To ensure GI tagged product promotion, a prime location has been identified at the departure area of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi. In June 2021, the season’s first shipment of 1048 kg GI Tagged Malihabadi Dusseheri Mango was exported from Lucknow to the United Kingdom and UAE. GI products from other regions included Sangli raisins, Nagpur Orange, Dahanu Gholvad Chikoo, Marathwada Kesar Mango, Jalgaon Banana from Maharashtra, Kandhamal Turmeric from Odisha and Bangalore Rose Onion from Karnataka, Allahabad Surkha Guava, Kalanamak Rice from Uttar Pradesh, Madurai Malli from Tamil Nadu etc. As on date, there are 417 registered GI products and of them, around 150 GI tagged products are agricultural and food products, out of which more than 100 registered GI products fall under the category of APEDA scheduled products (Cereals, Fresh Fruits and vegetables, processed products, etc).

MANILA: The Plastic Flamingo (the PLAF), with the support of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, has launched a new recycling line at PLAF upcycling factory in Muntinlupa to upcycle the hardto-recycle plastic sachet in the Philippines. This new recycling line creates an incentive for waste collectors to pick up the discarded plastic packaging, instead of leaving them behind as litter that collects on the streets, in sewers and spills into rivers and oceans. This launch marks a milestone as part of CMA CGM and the PLAF’s partnership, which aims to collect 120 metric tons of plastic waste to be upcycled in Metro Manila within a year. Reducing discarded plastic sachet as marine plastic pollution 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated in the Philippines each year with about 20 per cent ending up in the ocean. Single-serving plastic packaging has posed as one of the biggest waste issues in this country where an estimated 163 million pieces of sachets are consumed daily, according to the World Bank. With the CMA CGM-funded recycling line, the PLAF will now be able to expand its range of recycled plastic products beyond those that are used to build shelters, boardwalks and outdoor furniture today. The PLAF will optimise the new line to roll out more products to stimulate a market for recycled plastic products and enhance the circular plastic economy. With the PLAF upcycling plastic sachets ahead, the social enterprise is now able to reduce plastic sachet from the equation of marine plastic pollution, saving marine biodiversity and the food chain. 75 of 120 metric tons of plastic already collected The addition of the PLAF’s new recycling line stems from its collaboration with the CMA CGM Group to stop 120 metric tons of plastic from leaking into the ocean. Since last September, about 75 metric tons of plastics have been collected through junk shops, individual waste collectors and various collection points across Metro Manila. The PLAF’s network of collection points include drop-off points, shops, schools, villages and offices including those of CMA CGM and CEVA Logistics where staff members are contributing by depositing their used plastics into containers. The CMA CGM-PLAF partnership also supports the employment of 12 local staff at PLAF’s factory in Muntinlupa. With the new recycling line up and

running, they will continue as part of the PLAF’s production team in taking plastic upcycling forward in the Philippines.
