Overall exports sector on road to recovery, however demand still an issue in many markets due to high inventory: FIEO NEW DELHI: Overall exports during the month of October 2023 have turned positive with a growth of 9.43 percent to USD 62.26 billion, which is a good sign and shows the strength of India’s manufacturing and services capabilities during these challenging times, said FIEO President, Dr A Sakthivel while reacting to the October export figures. This suggests that the exports sector is on the road to recovery due to the resilience shown by it. Demand is still an issue in many markets due to high inventory and growth reflects that we may be eating into the share of some other countries. Dr Sakthivel, however, feels that growth of 6.21 percent in merchandise exports is a good sign as this has happened despite weak demand and moderation in commodity prices, which spiked last y e a r a f t e r t h e U k r a i n e w a r.
FIEO Chief further added that the tension in West Asia had also made businesses and markets sceptical and nervous. He is of the view that the conflict will have a limited impact unless it escalates, and more countries join in. While goods exports growth has remained somewhat sombre, services have continued on with its momentum and maintained a rising trend, helping to narrow the overall trade deficit and keeping the current account deficit under check. 22 out of 30 key products sectors, which have shown positive growth during the month of October 2023, include Engineering Goods, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Electronic Goods, Iron Ore, Ceramic P roducts & Glassware, Processed Items, Marine Products, Meat, Dairy & Poultry Products, Cotton Yarn/Fabs./madeups, Handloom Products etc, Manmade Yarn/Fabs./made-ups etc., Carpet, Handicrafts excl. handmade
carpet, Plastic & Linoleum and Jute Mfg. including Floor Covering. FIEO President also said that the increase in imports is a cause of concern, which should be looked into through analytical profiling of the same. However, an increase in gold imports by 90% and over US$ 7 Bn in value may push jewellery exports in next few months. FIEO President further reiterated that the need of the hour is to provide further support to the MSMEs through easy and low cost of credit and marketing support. Long pending demand of interest equalisation support to all sectors of export and further extension of ECLGS till March 31, 2024, will help in giving much needed cushion to the sector. The trade and industry would also like to see important FTAs with UK and EU to see the light of the day soon, to further provide much needed boost to the sector, said Dr A Sakthivel.
FM calls India-Middle East-Europe Corridor “promising” at IPRD 2023 NEW DELHI : At the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2023 on November 15 here, Union Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman declared the “promising prospects” of the IndiaMiddle East-Europe Connectivity Corridor (IMEC). Sitharaman explained in detail how the IMEC, which was signed on September 9–10, under India’s G20 Presidency, during the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi, is a multimodal economic corridor. It aims to improve connection on several fronts, including ships, railroads, roads, energy cables, highspeed data cables, and a hydrogen pipeline, according to the research. The corridor, which is mostly maritime, will connect West Asian ports like Fujairah, Jebel Ali, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, with Indian ports like the Jawaharlal
Nehru Port , Mundra, and Kandla, as well as the Saudi Arabian ports of D a m m a m , R a s A l K h a i r, a n d Ghuwaifat. The link will also be extended by rail to Israeli ports in Haifa and Saudi Arabian towns. Known as the “Northern Corridor,” the last marine section will link the ports of Haifa and Piraeus, Greece, providing a direct connection to Europe, according to Sitharaman. The importance of IMEC resides in its promotion of an affordable cross-border transit network that links Europe, the Middle East, West Asia, and South Asia, and supplements current forms of transportation. Sitharaman did, h o w e v e r, i s s u e a w a r n i n g o n geopolitical difficulties, citing worries over the Israel-Gaza conflict. Highlighting India’s maritime importance, Sitharaman stressed the
nation’s commitment to bolstering the maritime sector, emphasising governmental support through fiscal policies and financial resources. In international shipping, India has significantly climbed the ranks, from 44th in 2014 to 22nd in 2023, as per the report. Furthermore, Indian ports also boast a 0.9-day ‘turn-around time’, surpassing established maritime centres such as Singapore, the UAE, Germany, the USA, Australia, Russia, and South Africa, as per the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index report 2023, it added.

‘Tuna-Tekra Greenfield Container Terminal is game-changer for Kutch region,’ says DPA Chairman Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Biggest PPP among Major Ports The Tuna-Tekra project is the biggest investment till date under the private-public partnership (PPP) model for major ports. While DP World will invest around Rs. 4,500 crore, DPA will invest Rs. 500 crore in infrastructure like roads, Mehta said. The previous highest investment in a PPP port project was Rs. 3,200 crore at Paradip port, he added. Revenue generation The project will provide the highest revenue generation for any major port under PPP, with the royalty per twenty foot equivalent unit (TEU) exceeding Rs. 6,000. The project’s concession period is for 30 years, and there will be a 2 per cent increase per annum in the royalty. The period is extendable for another 20 years, he added. The DPA has three ports — at Kandla, Tuna-Tekra, and Vadinar in Jamnagar — under its control. Mehta said Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the greenfield container terminal project — to be completed in
three years — on October 17. Another PPP operator — JM Baxi — handles two container berths with 5 lakh TEUs capacity per annum. The greenfield terminals will have an annual capacity of 2.19 million TEUs and a 1,100-m berth capable of handling next-generation container ships carrying more than 18,000 TEUs. As part of the concession agreement the berth can be extended to 1,375 m. Competition from Mundra Port The greenfield terminal will have to compete with the massive container operations at Adani group’s Mundra port, just 75 km away. H o w e v e r, M e h t a i s c o n f i d e n t about future prospects, saying, “We may require more terminals to handle the volume growth in the future. The terminal will cater to future trade demand from northern, western and central India, connecting the regions to global markets.” Mehta said the Indian Railways has approved the quadrupling of the Samakhiali– Gandhidham line, which will be a big boost for the Tuna-Tekra terminals. Multimodal network DP World currently operates five container terminals in India —
two in Mumbai, and one each in Mundra, Cochin and Chennai — with a combined capacity of about 6 million TEUs, which will increase to 8.19 million TEUs with the addition of the Tuna-Tekra terminal. Exports up 6.2% in Oct; Import rise 12.3% NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports showed a 6.21% year-on-year rise in October after being in the negative growth zone since February, except for August, mainly aided by a low base. Import of goods too broke the trend of ten consecutive months of negative growth to register 12.3% y- o -y increase in October, but this was to a large extent due to a surge in inward shipments of gold and silver and had less to do with input imports meant for domestic value addition or exports. Government officials still attributed the improvement in trade numbers after several months of torpor to economic “green shoots” and expressed the hope that last fiscal year’s exports of $451.1 billion will be exceeded in the current year, despite severe global headwinds. The import jump, attributable to a shift in festive calender, precipitated a larger-than-expected trade deficit of $31.46 billion in October, which was not only up 19% on year but was also all-time-high monthly deficit. “In August green shoots were visible, and in October and through the first week of November these have stabilised. I am very hopeful that we
will be crossing last year’s (export) figure, and this is happening despite the fall in commodity prices,” Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said. For the record, exports in October stood at $33.57 billion and imports at $65.03 billion. Cumulatively, exports during the April-October period of the current fiscal year shrank 7% to $244.89 billion, while imports fell 8.95% to $391.96 billion. Gold imports were up 95% on year to $7.2 billion in October while silver imports rose 124% to $1.7 billion. Officials said the big jump in gold and silver imports was likely due to a surge in domestic demand. Much demand for these previous metals for re-exports after converting them into ornaments is not seen– there wasn’t a
similar increase in the exports of gems and jeweller y. Gems and jewellery exports were in fact down 9.8% on year to $2.9 billion in October. “The higher trade deficit in October is due to a shift in the festive calendar but it is expected to moderate in November, Chief Economist at ICRA Aditi Nayar said. For the full year she said the current account deficit would come in at 1.8-2%. According to the data, 22 of the 30 key sectors exhibited positive growth in October, and these include iron ore, meat, dairy and poultry products, pharma, electronic goods, carpet, plastic, marine and engineering goods. Engineering goods have shown a third straight month of growth in October while pharma has been doing well despite a fall in per unit realisation. Engineering goods exports were up 7.2% on year to $8 billion while pharma exports grew 29% to $ 2.4 billion. On the other hand, import sectors that recorded high growth in October include pulses (112.2 %), fruits and vegetables (53.4 %), non-ferrous metals (21.24 %) and electronics goods (26 %).

Maritime India on the move with Govt backing: FM NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman laid out the Government’s plans to “position India as a hub in new and diversified supply and value chains across the Indo -Pacific” with the Centre’s comprehensive fiscal and policy backing. Giving an insight into the all-round Government support during a special address at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD-2023), the Finance Minister said that as many as 31 projects have been identified at nine M a j o r Po r t s f o r t h e n a t i o n a l monetisation pipeline launched in 2022 with a total estimated capex of Rs 14,483 crore for 2022-25. The apex international conference, themed ‘Geopolitical Impacts upon Indo-Pacific Maritime Trade and Connectivity’, was organised by Indian Navy’s knowledge partner National Maritime Foundation. Supply chain hub “We are entirely conscious of the fact that, over the foreseeable future, India’s comprehensive national power is going to remain inextricably linked to the ocean. We are seized of the pressing need to grow the maritime sector as a whole and our Government is determined to provide the requisite support by way of fiscal policy and financial outlay. We seek to position India as a hub in new and
diversified supply chains and value chains across the Indo-Pacific and, indeed, across the world,” the Finance Minister told the gathering that included the top brass of Indian Navy and other navies, diplomats, and experts on the Indo-Pacific region. Sitharaman, who was previously Defence Minister before taking up the Finance Ministry portfolio, highlighted several other Governmental maritime initiatives. She said that insurance in the shipping area has also become a policy focus for the Government, having learned lessons from the Covid pandemic. “On the one hand, a marine cargo pool has now been created with the full support of the IRDAI, that is the Insurance Regulatory And Development Authority of India, and domestic insurance companies to support maritime trade,” Sitharaman said. “On the other, India is improving its shipping arbitration and, in order to reduce India’s vulnerability to international sanctions and pressures and to provide greater strategic flexibility in shipping operations, we are setting up a fullfledged Indian-owned and Indiabased protection and indemnity PLI entity that will additionally provide protection to coastal and Indian shipping,” she said.

India has nine states and four Union Territories situated on the coast, 12 Major and 200-plus NonMajor Ports along its 7,500-km coastline, along with a vast network of navigable waterways for international as well as domestic trade, she pointed out. The industry in India provides over 2 lakh direct and indirect jobs, which is only expected to grow. According to the UNCTAD, India was also the second largest exporter of ocean-based goods and services among developing countries in 2020, the Minister stated in a reference to the country’s growing maritime trade capabilities. According to the Minister, the Government’s effort is being captured in international indices as well. “Our global ranking has risen from 44th place in 2014 to 22nd rank in 2023. Similarly, as per World Bank’s ’Logistics Performance Index Report 2023’, the turnaround time of Indian ports is now just 0.9 days, which is lower than ports in established maritime centres such as Singapore, UAE, Germany, USA, Australia, Ru s s i a a n d S o u t h A f r i c a , ” t h e Minister said.
Adani Group eyeing opportunities in neighbouring countries after Sri Lanka port, says Karan Adani COLOMBO: Days after announcing a significant $553 million investment from the United States government for its West Container Terminal in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Mr. Karan Adani, CEO of Adani Group told reporters that Adani Ports is eyeing further “opportunities in our neighboring countries”. Speaking to reporters in Colombo Mr. Karan Adani also said the US financing, backed by the International Development Finance Corporation, is a “reaffirmation” of international support for the Indian conglomerate’s companies. According to Mr. Karan Adani, the neighbouring countries include potential ventures in Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Tanzania, besides the existing plans in Sri Lanka and Israel. He added that the ports business accounts for 90 percent of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone’s revenues, and this trend will continue as the company continues to expand in India.
“Trade is booming, we are just doing a catch-up game. We are always short of capacity and that is hurting Indian trade,” he added. Challenges and Resilience The financing deal comes as a welcome boost for the Adani Group, which faced challenges, including a short-seller attack and corporate fraud allegations. The investment is not only a strategic move for the Adani Group but also signals Washington’s endorsement of the port project, aimed at countering China’s maritime influence in the crucial Indian Ocean region. While Adani Ports is India’s largest operator, with a robust domestic business, challenges persist in scaling up overseas operations to match China’s extensive influence in global ports. Despite recent investments and endorsements, the Adani Group faces scrutiny over its business practices, including a resignation by its auditor Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP. The group, however, remains resilient, showing growth capability and financial strength.
Looking Beyond China Gautam Adani, the billionaire father and owner of the Adani Group, has openly criticized China in the past. However, the focus remains on expanding and strengthening operations in India. Despite the recent US government loan and investments in Adani’s green energy business, challenges lie ahead, Bloomberg n o t e d . A d a n i Po r t s m a y f a c e difficulties in raising funds for expansion amid tight global markets and high debt costs. The conglomerate, nevertheless, maintains a resilient growth c a p a b i l i t y, a n d i t s b u s i n e s s e s continue to attract investors despite reputational risks. Visakhapatnam Port achieves record 50 MMT cargo handling volume in just 228 days V I S A K H A P A T N A M : Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has said it has set a record by handling 50 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of cargo handling in just 228 days in FY24. The port surpassed its previous record handling of 50 MMT in 251 days performed in the Financial Year 2022-23. This achievement has come true

100% ECO Delivery : Maersk helps Europris to reduce GHG emissions significantly OSLO/COPENHAGEN: Europris has choosen Maersk’s ECO Delivery product to significantly reduce GHG emissions from seaborne logistics. Europris is the leading retail company in Norway with more than 260 supermarkets and one of the largest importers of containerized goods from Asia into the country. Maersk and Europris have a longstanding partnership in end-to-end logistics. With ECO Delivery Ocean, Maersk offers its customers the opportunity to handle transports completely with certified green fuels* for a fixed cost. The corresponding greenhouse gas savings are confirmed to the customers with a certificate and these transports will be exempted from EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) charges by Maersk in the future. “Europris is among the first customers that is shipping 100% of its cargo under Maersk care with ECO Delivery. It is very exciting to see more and more of our customers going 100% in to reduce their emissions from seaborne transports instantly and without any compromises,” said, Birna Odefors, Managing Director of Maersk’s Area Nordics. “The reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions is an important strategic goal for our company. The cooperation with partners that seek modern solutions and
opportunities are therefore imperative for achieving our ambitions,”said, Pål-Christian Andersen, Logistics Director at Europris. Europris aims to reduce its CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and the 1.5°C target. The Norwegian company is working towards zero emissions by 2050. Decarbonising logistics is a key area to achieve a fast and efficent reduction of emissions. Europris is decreasing its GHG emissions from ocean transports with ECO Delivery by more than 80% or in concrete figures over 3,270 tons CO2e in 2023 and another estimated 6,250 tons CO2e in 2024. This is made possible by replacing fossil fuels on Maersk ships with second generation biodiesel or bio-methanol based on waste feedstocks.
