BDO: Shipowners’ Confidence Rises as Pandemic Nears the End LONDON: The industry can see the bright light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. The progress being made in tackling the pandemic continued to drive up confidence. This generally positive outlook is broadly present in all business types and across regions. Overall confidence has risen to 6.6 out of 10 from 6.0 in November 2020. This was driven predominantly by Brokers, up to 6.3 from 4.8 out of 10. Confidence has also increased among Owners and, finally, Managers’ confidence has gone from 6.9 to a historic high of 7.1 out of 10. Confidence has gone from 6.6 to 6.7 out of 10 in Asia and confidence in Europe is closing the gap from the previous quarter by climbing from 6.1 to 6.5 SURVEY ANALYSIS The likelihood of respondents making a major investment or significant development over the coming year, having recovered from the low point of 4.0 out of 10 in May 2020, fell slightly from 5.3 last time to 5.2 this time. The increases across most business types and in Asia were offset by a fall in Europe from 5.5 to 5.1.Expectations that finance costs will rise have strengthened slightly with a net score of +20% up from +18% in November 2020. Brokers saw the biggest upward shift in expectations followed by Owners. Managers’ expectations weakened but remained positive. Expectations in Europe remained largely unchanged and Asia saw a slight strengthening from an expectation that costs would stay the same in November 2020.

Business performance factors There has been very little overall change in business performance factors with demand trends still the factor expected to influence performance most significantly over the next 12 months, being cited by some 32% of respondents. It is followed once again by competition at 18% and finance costs at 15 FREIGHT MARKETS The net freight rate sentiment in tankers almost doubled, rising from +21% to +38%. Managers are the only business type to buck the overall trend and while sentiment in Asia was unchanged, Europe saw a small increase. The net balance of respondents expecting higher dry bulk rates has dropped by just a point to +38%. Owners’ and Brokers’ expectation have weakened slightly while Managers’ expectations have strengthened marginally. Expectations have weakened slightly in both Europe and Asia but remain clearly positive. Container ship freight rate expectations have fallen sharply to a net balance of -36% from a score of +11% in November 2020. Unsurprisingly this is reflected in big falls across all business types and in Europe and Asia. It is worth noting that this softening of future sentiment is against a background of sector rates being at a high point not seen in more than ten year.

OIL PRICES The special question in this edition was about expectations of oil prices in 12 months’ time. Two thirds of respondents believed the crude oil price will sit in the $5059 and $60-69 brackets with scores of 32% and 35% respectively. Very few respondents expected oil prices to drop below $40 or climb above $80.These responses are very similar to those we received when we last asked this question a year ago.

CONCLUSION COVID-19 continues to be a fact of everyday life but the deployment of vaccines provides light at the end of the tunnel. Shipping has, perhaps, been more resilient than other sectors and the continued and growing confidence illustrated by this report is testament to this resilience. However, there was a slight easing in the expectation of making a major investment, which may be an indicator that the way ahead will not always be smooth. COVID-19 led to a 4% decrease in seaborne trade in 2020. This fall, while not insignificant, was not as large a predicted by some analysts. There are good reasons to believe that seaborne trade will recover through 2021 and even exceed pre-COVID-19 levels by the end of the year. The prospect of getting through the worst of the pandemic is very welcome. However, it might be misguided to assume everything will be plain sailing from now on. Some of the comments from respondents suggest that despite the positive overall picture many in the industry still face substantial volatility. The industry also still faces a substantial challenge in how it responds to climate change, an issue that can only become more prominent, and how it tackles decarbonisation. Certainly the shipping industry needs to maintain its confidence to help meet these challenge.

Faster Global growth driven primarily by US, China and India: World Bank President WASHINGTON: There is now a faster global growth driven primarily by the US, China and India, World Bank president David Malpass has said even as he expressed concern over growing inequality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said here is also the concern of inequality in terms of vaccinations and median income that’s not going up very fast for some countries. “But there’s also the concern that there’s inequality. There’s the interest rate differential, where poor countries face much higher interest rates and they haven’t gone down the way global interest rates have done,” he said. “There’s the good news that there is faster global growth driven primarily by the US, China, and India, having strong rebounds,” Malpass told reporters at the start of the Spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

NAVI MUMBAI: The New benchmarks for productivity were created recently at PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) in JNPT by handling 1795 moves in just 8.6 hours with a Vessel Cont’d. Pg. 6 Productivity of 207 moves per hour.

MARSEILLE: Ahead of the UN Global Compact and as part of the first high-level preparatory talks for the COP26 summit, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, has put forward solutions that are immediately available and that contribute to achieving the Group’s objective of being carbon-neutral by 2050. Biomethane, a non-fossil energy and a step closer to carbon-neutral shipping The CMA CGM Group has reached another milestone in its efforts to be carbon-neutral by 2050, by supporting the production of 12,000 tonnes of biomethane (equivalent to a year’s fuel consumption of two 1,400-TEU ships). Biomethane is a renewable green gas produced in part by the methanation of European-sourced organic and plant waste. This energy source represents a fine example of how the circular economy can work while benefiting the agricultural sector. CMA CGM intends to push ahead with the development of this energy source by investing in biomethane production facilities and studying the viability of liquefaction processes so that biomethane can be rolled out as a shipping fuel. By supporting biomethane production, CMA CGM is accelerating its commitment to leading the energy transition in the shipping sector. The Group cut its overall CO2 emissions by 4% in 2020, following a 6% reduction in 2019. Since 2008, the Group has lowered its CO2 emissions per container-kilometer by 49%. Biomethane powering the equivalent of a Shipping Line 12,000 tonnes of guarantee-of-origin (GO) biomethane is enough to fuel the equivalent of two 1,400-TEU LNG-powered ships operating on the Northern European Balt3 line between St Petersburg and Rotterdam for a whole year. Guarantee- of- Origin Biomethane, coupled with CMA CGM’s dual-fuel gas-power technology, can reduce well-to-wake (entire value chain) greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2) by at least 67%. On a tank-to-wake basis (at ship level), the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions reaches 88% (including CO2). According to New York-based Blue Alpha Capital, fourth-quarter net earnings for the 11 carriers that report their financials came in at $5.8bn, but assuming that the non-reporting operators, such as MSC, achieved similar results, based on the average for the 11 lines the consultancy estimated the cumulative net profit for the period was a staggering $9bn. For the full-year, Blue Alpha Capital calculated a combined net profit of $10.2bn for reporting carriers and an estimated $15.8bn net for all the topranked lines. To put the 2020 earnings into context, they are more than double the total circa-$7bn of profit ocean carriers produced in the previous five years – with several carriers having racked up year-on-year losses during that period. Moreover, the 2020 result is a complete reversal of the outlook for the industry before the pandemic. “The final result for 2020 is a far cry

from some of the doomsday predictions made mid-year, with fears the industry might post a collective net loss of up to $10bn,” said Alphaliner. Analysing the performance of the t h r e e m a i n Ta i w a n e s e c a r r i e r s , Evergreen, Yang Ming and Wan Hai, as an example of the turnaround, Alphaliner noted that the lines had “profited from soaring transpacific rates and the added rate impact of box shortages”. Evergreen posted a net profit of $853m for 2020, while Yang Ming and Wan Hai recorded profits of $420m and $396m, respectively. Alphaliner also noted that the trio had reversed a breakeven at Evergreen and loss at Yang Ming, while Wan Hai tripled its net result last year. Meanwhile, Blue Alpha Capital founder John McCown traced the liner industry’s turnaround to an unforeseen overcorrection of capacity by carriers on many tradelanes at the start of the pandemic. “Carriers took immediate and

aggressive action to reduce capacity by blanking sailings,” he said, adding that the industry consolidation in the form of the alliances had “made this logistically easier to accomplish”. He said: “As it turned out, that was an over-correction in many lanes that resulted in demand exceeding capacity. “The $64m question remains whether the industry has embarked on a new trajectory for its results, based on new capacity management skills, or whether it will revert to its historical mean performance,” he added. Nevertheless, with massive spot rate hikes now complemented by much higher contract rates, carriers look set fair for even greater profits for the first two quarters of the year, at least, if not for the whole of 2021. Indeed, China’s Cosco Shipping has advised its first-quarter profit will exceed $2bn, and one understands that two European-based carriers will shortly alert shareholders to a muchimproved outlook for the half-year.

Railways looks to bag 45% of ports trafc by 2030 : National Railway Plan NEW DELHI: The railways has set a target to bag around 45 per cent of the traffic from ports by 2030, as compared to the 27 per cent it carries currently, says the National Rail Plan (NRP). According to the plan, the overall traffic handled at major ports is likely to increase from the present 700 MT to 925 MT by 2026 and 1,400 million tonnes by 2030. In order to meet the growing demand, the Indian Railways has undertaken some works on top priority with targeted completion by 2024. These works include the Chennai Beach–Attipattu line (Kamarajar port), Kanaknadi–Panambur line (New Mangalore port), Raipur–Titlagarh Doubling (Visakhapatnam), Madurai–Tuticorin Doubling (Tuticorin), Titlagarh– S a m b a l p u r D o u b l i n g ( Pa r a d i p ) , Banspani–Daitri–Jakhapur Doubling ( P a r a d i p ) , S a m b a l p u r – Ta l c h e r D o u b l i n g ( P a r a d i p ) , Hospet–Tenaighat–Vasco Doubling

(Marmugao), Budhapank–Salegaon 3rd and 4th line (Paradip) and the Bhadrak– Vizianagram–Vizag–Vijaywada 3rd Line, which cover all Major Ports on the East Coast. The Western Ports of Gujarat and JNPT in Maharashtra will get connected to the northern hinterland of Rewari–National Capital Region as well as Punjab (Ludhiana) via the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor along with feeder routes. The connectivity of Kolkata and Haldia port to the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor will be established through the Sonnagar–Dankuni leg of the Eastern Corridor, officials said. “At present, railways carries 25-27 per cent of the major port traffic. By 2026, it aims to increase this share to 3235 per cent of the projected 925 MT, and by 2030 to 40-45 per cent of the projected 1,200 MT,” an official said. “As part of first phase projects under Vision 24, two Dedicated Freight

Corridors (DFCs) will be commissioned much before 2026 to allow traffic to grow to 32-35 per cent of the share from the present 27 per cent. In second phase, three new DFC corridors will be developed before 2030 to achieve the target of 45 per cent share in port traffic,” he said. Presently, the total traffic handled by Indian ports is to the tune of 1,200 MT, out of which, nearly 700 MT is handled by the 14 major ports — Deendayal (Kandla) Port, Paradip Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai Port, Visakhapatnam, Chennai Port, Kolkata Port, New Mangalur u Port, V O C h i d a m b a r a m ( Tu t i c o r i n ) Po r t , Kamarajar Port, Kochi Port, Mormugao Port, Mundra Port and Haldia Port. The remaining 500 Million Tonnes is handled by over 205 minor ports. The commodities handled at these ports include petroleum, oil, iron-ore, coal, steel, fertilizers, foodgrains, containers and other cargo.

Gujarat spinners to rescue Tirupur Exporters AHMEDABAD: In a significant development, the Gujarat Spinners Association has assured to supply yarn to garment units in Tirupur. The assurance was given during a virtual meet organised by AEPC with members of the association recently. According to a press release, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) organised the meeting to

discuss availability of yarn for knitwear exporters. During the meet, C o n f e d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n Te x t i l e Industry (CITI) Chairman T Rajkumar said around 30 to 40 per cent of total hosiery yarn produced in India was being consumed by units in Tirupur. Container shortage, rising freight rates hit pharmaceutical exports HYDERABAD: Shortage of empty containers, particularly reefer containers, and an almost 60 per cent surge in freight rates since October have hit export of pharmaceutical shipments from India. The Indian Drug Manufacturers Association said that ports in southern India have borne the brunt of box shortage prevailing over the last 7-8 months and have urged the Commerce Ministry to intervene and help tide over the crisis. The shortage of boxes, according to the association, has led to a rise in freight rates by almost 60 per cent. SV Veer ramani, past national president of the Association told that,

the rates for 40 feet containers have gone up from $3,800 to $8,600 for shipments to Cameroon and from $6,600 to $11800 for shipments to Burkino Faso in West Africa. Reefer containers are not readily available and have to be booked at least 15 days in advance, he said. The freight rates have also gone up from $3,300 to $5,600 for shipments to the UK. All these have affected the smooth movement of pharma exports, he said. Though the situation has slightly improved at least in terms of dry containers, the shipping lines have increased their freight rates by 60 per cent or more, he said. The box shortage has forced many

pharma exporters to pay higher prices for containers to meet their export commitments, which is adding to their cost and reducing their margins. IDMA and Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) have asked the Commerce Ministry to sort out the issue, he said. R e v i U d a y B h a s k a r, D i r e c t o r General of Pharmexcil told that, the issue of container shortage has been felt in almost all sectors and pharmaceutical is no exception. There is a shortage of boxes since the past 7-8 months and the issue has been taken up with the ministries concerned. The government is working on resolving the crisis at the earliest, he said.

High ocean freight may lead to slow start in rice exports NEW DELHI: After record exports of around 12 million tonnes (mt) of nonbasmati rice during 2020-21, exporters are confident of sustaining the trend this fiscal. However, they see a slower start to the shipments in current fiscal as buyers have turned cautious over the sharp increase in freight rates. “In the new financial year, we expect to sustain the shipment trend witnessed in last year as the supply issues are seen continuing in other major producing countries. However, with the rise in freight rates, we see buyers adopting a wait-and-watch stance. As a result, there will be a slower start to shipments,” said BV Krishna Rao, President, The Rice Exporters A s s o c i a t i o n . H o w e v e r, t h e shipments for the earlier contracts will happen in April, he said.

Ocean freight rates have moved up by 50-60 per cent for both container and break bulk cargo, due to which the share of freight costs in the total product cost of rice has increased significantly, Rao said. The demand continues to be there for the Indian rice as the supply issues are seen continuing in the other origins. Though there’s an improved crop in Myanmar, exporters are seen facing challenges due to the prevailing political situation. Also a weaker Indian currency is seen aiding the country’s exporters. Rao further said that the availability of rice for exports in the country was likely to be lower as the Government has stepped up the procurement. “We may not have last year’s level of supplies due to higher procurement, which may result in slightly firm prices. We are expecting the average realisations to increase by about $20 per tonne from the

last year’s average of around $370,” he added. India — with total exports of around 16 mt — has been the largest player in the world rice trade estimated at 50 million tonnes. Basmati exports Basmati rice exports are estimated to be between 4.5 and 4.6 mt, said Vinod Kaul, Executive Director, All India Rice Exporters Association. Basmati rice exports, which had registered a growth of around 16 per cent in volumes till December, slowed down in JanuaryFebruary period due to shortage of containers and also due to higher ocean freight rates. “As a result, we expect a overall growth in shipments to be marginal at around 1 per cent over 201920,” Kaul said. India exported 4.5 million tonnes in 2019-20. About 90 per cent of the basmati shipments are done through containers.

IMF raises China growth forecast to 8.4% in 2021 WASHINGTON: The IMF recently increased China’s growth projection to 8.4 percent for this year, as effective COVID -19 containment measures boost the economy’s strong recovery. In its latest issue of the World Economic Outlook, the IMF put China’s 2021 growth at 8.4 percent, up

0.3 percentage points from its January forecast. Its projection for China’s economic expansion for 2022 remains unchanged at 5.6 percent. The upward revision came amid an ascending trend as global growth was projected at 6 percent this year, up from the fund’s January estimate of 5.5 percent.

The US economy was predicted to grow by 6.4 percent in 2021 with a moderate 3.5 percent the following year. This compares to the IMF ’s projection in January that the US economy would expand 5.1 percent this year before a 2.5 percent growth in 2022.

Major Chinese Container Ports volume up 10.8% in late March BEIJING: Container volume at eight major Chinese ports increased 10.8% year-on-year in late March. According to the statistics released by China Ports and Harbors Association, export container volume increased 8.7% while the domestic volume increased 18% in late March. Among which, the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan and Shenzhen posted a growth rate of over 30%.

Cargo throughput at major coastal hub ports increased 8.6% year-on-year while the international trade cargo throughput increased 3.8%. Cr ude oil shipments at major coastal ports slightly increased 4.3% year-on-year. The port of Yantai posted a growth rate of over 60% and the port of Tianjin reported a growth rate of over 30%. Port inventory increased 23.1% year-on-year. Metal ore shipments at major

Chinese ports declined 8.6% while the port inventory increased 6.4%. Cargo throughput and container volume at the three major Yangtze river ports, Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing, increased 58.1% and 47.6% year-on-year respectively. In March, major Chinese coastal hub ports’ cargo throughput increased 10.9% comparing with the same period of last year. Container volume at eight major ports increased 14.5%.

Lars Kastrup & Gan Chee Yen appointed at Senior Management Roles at PIL SINGAPORE: Former NOL/APL CEO Lars Kastrup and Heliconia Capital Management Director Gan Chee Yen, have been appointed to top management positions at Pacific International Lines (PIL). Kastrup and Gan have been appointed Co-Presidents and Executive Directors of PIL, founded and run by the Teo family. Last week saw Temasek’s Heliconia completing a $600m rescue deal for the Singapore shipping company, which faced bankruptcy last year. Family member SS Teo will remain as Executive Chairman of PIL. Both Kastrup and Gan had served as advisors to PIL since July last year, when it was working with Heliconia on the rescue deal. Kastrup brings with him over 30 years of shipping experience and his last post was CEO of NOL/APL and Executive Vice President of CMA CGM Group Strategy and

M&A. He was former Executive Vice President of Assets CMA CGM Group heading up CMA Terminals, CMA Ships, Container Logistics as well as regional carriers such as MacAndrews, OPDR and Mercosul. Gan holds board positions at Heliconia, CEI Limited, Surbana Jurong, ICHX Tech and Bank of China Fullerton Community Bank. He was previously the CEO of Fullerton Financial Holdings and Co-Chief Investment Officer at Temasek, where he was also Chief Financial Officer, Senior Managing Director for Special Projects and Head of China. Teo commented on the appointments: “I have known them both for many years and PIL has benefitted from their invaluable advice over the past few months, culminating in PIL’s successful restructuring. They are a strong addition to the management team and they have the full measure of my trust. I look forward to working with them as PIL moves forward.”

HMM Nuri fully laden on maiden voyage SEOUL: HMM announced that HMM Nuri, the first of eight 16,000 TEU-class new container-ships, has been entirely filled with cargoes on her first voyage. On 6 April, HMM Nuri departed the Port of Singapore with 13,438 TEU loaded on board. Considering the safety of vessel operations and cargo weight, the maximum loadable capacity of each 16,000 TEU ship stands at around 13,300 TEU on average. HMM Nuri will transit the Suez Canal en route to the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. HMM Nuri is being deployed on the Far East Europe 4(FE4)

service, operated by THE Alliance, following the port rotation of Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Singapore, Suez Canal, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Southampton, Suez Canal, Yantian, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Busan. Last month, HMM deployed two 16,000 TEU containerships, HMM Nuri and HMM Gaon, and will take delivery of the remaining six vessels until June 2021. HMM Gaon, the second 16,000 TEU ship, is currently sailing to the Port of Yantian, China. Meanwhile, HMM’s twelve 24,000 TEU containerships deployed on the Asia-North Europe trade lane have made a total of 37 voyages to date since April last year. Among 37 voyages, HMM has achieved 36 voyages with a full load of cargoes.

MOL revises Corporate Mission, Group Vision, and Group Values (MOL CHART"S")

TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Ta k e s h i H a s h i m o t o ) announced revisions to the MOL Group Corporate Principles, Group Vision, and Group Values (MOL CHART) effective April 1. The group has moved ahead with various businesses under the MOL Group Corporate Principles established in 2001. Amid rising e n v i r o n m e n t a l awareness including m o v e s t o w a r d decarbonization and higher expectations for corporations to contribute to a sustainable society, the revisions reflect the expansion of the group's business domain outside of the transport sector, and subsequently mirror its changing sense of values and affirm its raison d'être in society as it strives for further growth. In addition, looking ahead in detail to the next 10 years, MOL has revised its group vision. The MOL Group also revised "MOL CHART," which was introduced in 2015 to convey the core values embraced by all group employees, by adding an "S" for "Safety." The group

renewed its commitment to safe operation by incorporating safety, as the group's highest priority, into the Group Values. At the same time, it redefined "R" from signifying "Reliability" to "Respond to trust of stakeholders." The revised MOL Group Corporate Mission, Group Vision, and MOL CHARTS will support the future of MOL Group as its new compass in coming years.
