Indian Govt is looking for dealing with EU countries that could draw $100 billion investment NEW DELHI : India is about to finalise a first-of-its-kind trade deal that could see a small group of European nations invest as much as $100 billion over 15 years in exchange for easier trade access to the wo r l d ’ s m o s t p o p u l ous nation, according to people with knowledge of the matter. T h e E u r o p e a n F r e e Tr a d e Association, which comprises Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, made a commitment to invest in India as part of a trade pact that’s in the final stages of negotiations, the people said, asking not to be identified as the talks are still ongoing. The contours of the deal have been agreed and deliberations currently center on the final investment amount, which could be as much as
$100 billion over 15 years, some of the people said. While India wants the commitment to be legally binding, one of the European officials said the amount will likely be framed as a goal, with no legal means to claim it included in the language of the agreement. If finalised, it would mark the first time an investment commitment of this nature is secured by India as part of a free trade agreement. Switzerland’s Economy Minister Guy Parmelin said last month that the outline of a deal had been agreed upon, without giving details. Legal clarifications are currently being rushed so the deal can be signed before India holds elections likely from April, a European official with knowledge of the matter said. The Swiss economy ministry said
in a statement that the text of the agreement is “still to be finalised and both parties have agreed not to disclose the details at this stage.” The main points where agreement has been reached include “patent protection, which was controversial in the past, as well as a new type of investment promotion chapter,” it said. Norway’s Government declined to comment on the terms of the deal. Trade Bloc Switzerland is by far India’s largest commercial partner among the members of the EFTA bloc, which comprises European nations which are not members of the European Union. Swiss two-way trade with India amounted to $17.14 billion in the 2022-23 fiscal year, out of $18.66 billion with the whole group.
Govt directs ECGC to maintain moratorium on insurance rates for exporters NEW DELHI : The Government has said it has directed the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) to maintain a moratorium on insurance rates for Indian exporters in the wake of the Red Sea crisis.State-owned ECGC is an export promotion organisation, seeking to improve the competitiveness of Indian exports by providing them with credit insurance covers.Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel said that the ECGC continues to provide insurance coverage to exporters. She said that the corporation has not refused cover for export shipments routed through the Red Sea and the credit risk cover is being provided based on the risk assessment and creditworthiness of overseas buyers and terms of payment. “The Government has directed Export Credit Guarantee Corporation Ltd. to maintain a
moratorium on rates of insurance for the Indian exporters,” Patel said in a written reply to the LokSabha. She said that some increase in the freight cost has been reported by the industry. Replying to a separate question, Patel said that the fruits destined for export to the US are irradiated in Indian irradiation facilities.The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved four Indian Irradiation facilities for irradiation treatment. As per the preclearance programme agreed between the two nations, the USDA inspector inspects fruits destined for export to America in the approved facilities.“The fruits are irradiated and inspected in India, in the presence of USDA and India’s Plant Quarantine Inspectors, and then are exported to USA,” she said. In another reply, she said that the Government is mindful of the current
geo-political situation and various IMEC partners are consulting each other on various aspects of the IMEC initiative.On the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, India, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US announced anMoU on September 9, 2023, committing to work together to develop a new India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor (IMEC). IMEC is comprised of two separate corridors, the east corridor connecting India to the Arabian Gulf and the northern corridor connecting the Arabian Gulf to Europe. It includes a railway route that, upon completion, will provide a reliable and cost-effective cross-border ship-torail transit network to supplement existing maritime and road transport routes – enabling goods and services to transit to, from, and between India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and Europe.
RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6.5% yet again MUMBAI : The Reserve Bank of India’s rate-setting panel, Monetary Po l i c y C o m m i t t e e ( M P C ) , o n Thursday kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent for the sixth time in a row. The MPC also decided with majority of 5:1 to remain focused on
withdrawal of accommodation, keeping the stance unchanged. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that RBI remains vigilant amid global uncertainties. In addition, the central bank also left its inflation forecast for FY24 unchanged at 5.4 per cent, despite
food price rise concerns and uncertainty around crude cost. On growth front, the MPC has forecast the Indian economy to grow at 7 per cent in FY25. The growth rate for Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 in FY25 were projected at 7.2 per cent, 6.8 per cent, 7 per cent and 6.9 per cent respectively.

Substantial portion of infra capex to be used for energy sector : PM Modi at India Energy Week PA N A J I : Pr i m e M i n i s t e r Shri Narendra Modi said that a substantial portion of the funds allocated under infrastr ucture capital expenditure will be used for the energy sector. Inaugurating the Energy Week 2024 here, Modi reiterated that by 2070, “we want to achieve net zero emissions target”,
adding India would soon become the production and export centre for green hydrogen. Green hydrogen refers to the hydrogen generated from electrolysis of water, with the entire process run on renewable energy. Green hydrogen has the potential to be the enabler of transition to
sustainable energy. In the industry, the colour is assigned based on the source of electricity that is used to generate the hydrogen molecule. Brown hydrogen is for coal, grey for natural gas and blue if it is produced from natural gas with a process of steam methane reforming.
High Capex, Rail Corridors, focus on Seafood to boost exports : Exporters NEW DELHI : Announcements of measures in the interim Budget such as high capex, three major economic railway corridors, and a target to increase seafood exports would help boost the country’s overall outbound shipments, exporters say. The Government has proposed to step up the implementation of PradhanMantriMatsyaSampadaYoj ana (PMMSY) by enhancing aquaculture productivity from existing 3 tonne to 5 tonne per hectare, and setting up five integrated aqua parks. CII National Committee on Exports and Imports Chairman Sanjay Budhia said that the announcement of a Rs 1 lakh crore corpus for innovation with a 50-year interest-free loan for long-term financing, refinancing at no or nil interest rates will encourage the private sector to scale up R&D and innovation in sunrise domains and
new age technologies. “There is a reinforcement of continued thrust on exports. Announcement of three economic corridors, multi-modal connectivity, emphasis on additional airports, etc. and doubling the target of seafood export to Rs 1 lakh crore clearly reiterate the importance of our international trade as an engine of growth,” Budhia, who is also the managing director of Patton Group, said. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President (Officiate) Israr Ahmed said that focus on investment in modern infrastructure, including digital, will help increase logistics efficiency for the industry. “Allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore for R&D and innovation will encourage the private sector to scale up their research and innovation significantly in sunrise sectors of the trade and industry,” Ahmed said. He added that the capital
expenditure of Rs 11.1 lakh crore will have a significant impact on the country ’s markets enhancing various projects, thereby leading to increased business and employment opportunities. Sharing similar views, Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) Chairman A Sakthivel said that the allocation of funds for schemes like PM MITRA would help promote domestic manufacturing. “There is no change in the rates of direct and indirect taxes in the interim Budget, including import duties, which gives a sense of balance,” he said. The countr y ’s merchandise exports during April-December this fiscal dipped by 5.7 per cent to USD 317.12 billion. Imports contracted by 7.93 per cent to USD 505.15 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 188.02 billion in the first three quarters as against USD 212.34 billion in AprilDecember 2022.
Merchandise exports set to moderate to USD 435 bn in FY24: Export-Import Bank of India MUMBAI : India's merchandise exports are likely to moderate to USD 435.3 billion in FY24 against 447.46 billion in FY23, the Export-Import Bank of India said recently. The merchandise exports are set to grow by nearly 3 per cent to USD 118.2 billion in the March quarter compared to the same period a year ago. It can be noted that the merchandise exports declined for
the first two quarters of the ongoing 2023-24. In its quarterly study on the overall exports, the policy bank said the non-oil exports will grow 4.55 per cent to USD 95 billion in the JanuaryMarch 2024 quarter. "Positive growth in India's exports could be as a result of India's strong GDP growth fundamentals and outlook and expected global easing of monetary tightening spurring global demand," the bank said in the report.
The oil exports are likely to remain subdued during the year, contracting by USD 12.5 billion compared to FY23, the bank said. The outlook is subject to risks of uncertain prospects for advanced economies, geopolitical shocks, and the Middle East crisis, leading to the intensification of the Red Sea crisis and deepening geo -economic fragmentation, among other factors, the report noted.

Amid Red Sea crisis, India gets a specific zone in Duqm Port NEW DELHI : Oman has allotted a specific zone to India in the strategically located Port of Duqm, less than two months after the visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to New Delhi, a development that will help enhance India’s role in the western and southern Indian Ocean region. The move will augment the Indian Navy’s role as a net security provider amid the ongoing crisis in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean region.
The port provides a logistical base for India in the field of maritime cooperation. It will also enhance India’s role as a first responder in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, said people familiar with the matter. The development will add significantly to India’s growing footprint in the region where the Indian Navy plays a key role in anti-piracy operations. Over the past few months, the navy has also assisted several vessels being hit
by Houthis from Yemen. The port is easily accessible to the shipping lines catering to Indian as well as African markets. Access to the port holds a strategic benefit for India as it overlooks the Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. It is located in the Al Wusta governorate of Oman. Govt. cognizant of importance of supply chain and effective logistics for improved resilience in domestic production and trade NEW DELHI : The Government is cognizant of the importance of supply chain and effective logistics for improved resilience in domestic production and trade. In this regard, Government of India has taken several measures to strengthen supply chains including logistic ecosystem. PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) was launched on 13th October 2021 for multimodal infrastructure planning, with a ‘whole of government approach’. PM Gati Shakti NMP is a GIS-enabled platform that integrates data layers of the infrastructure of roads, railways lines, ports, inland waterways, telecom lines, power lines, etc. onto a single platform and enables comprehensive planning for multimodal logistics. To complement PM Gati Shakti NMP, the National Logistics Policy (NLP) was launched on 17th September 2022 for efficiency in ser vices by streamlining processes in logistics sector through Comprehensive Logistics Action Plans (CLAP), including development of human
resources, adoption of digital technologies such as Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) and Logistics Data Bank (LDB). ULIP integrates 33 logistics related digital systems across Ministries, while LDB is operational to track and trace export import containers. In addition, a series of reforms have been taken to promote investments and manufacturing in the country, such as a liberalised FDI policy, introduction of PLI Schemes in key sectors, reduction in corporate tax, Foreign Trade Policy 2023 with focus on improving ease of doing business through measures for reduction in compliance burden, Make In India, One District One Product initiative, District As Export Hub initiative along with other business reforms. Further, the existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are ensuring supplies and market access to the manufacturing sector on preferential terms. Programmes like Bharatmala and Sagarmala, Trade Infrastructure for
Exports Scheme (TIES), Setting up of Industrial Parks and development of Industrial Corridors etc. also have been taken up to facilitate holistic infrastructure planning & accelerated economic development of the country. At the international front, amongst others, apart from taking initiatives such as the ‘G20 Generic Framework for Mapping GVCs’, which will help countries identify opportunities for sectors and products critical for building resilience within GVCs, Government of India has also become signatory to the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity Agreement relating to Supply Chain (an initiative of 14 Member countries) and also part of the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) with Japan and Australia to build collective, long-term resilient supply chains based on international partnerships. This information has been provided by the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Smt. Anupriya Patel in the LokSabha recently.

APM Terminals calls on OEMs to support them in raising asset management standards THE HAGUE : APM Terminals’ journey to towards becoming a world class asset management organisation started some years ago. In this next step of the journey, APM Terminals is calling on Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to support them in developing a competence development framework that will set the benchmark for professional development in the port industry. To support the company’s journey from reactive asset maintenance to predictive asset management, a global team of APM Terminals’ experts has been improving asset management capabilities, technology and company culture - sharing best practise around the world and introducing standardised planning. Technical Development Plan In this latest step, a technical competence framework is being developed. It will combine knowledge from internal expertise, technical institutes, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This will enable the asset management team to also adopt best practises from third parties and combine the most applicable techniques into its capabilities. It will also form part of a broader technical development plan for asset management teams at the company’s terminals. “The competency framework
project strategically organises vital knowledge and simplifies training processes,” explains Ivan Garcia Jorquera, Competence Development S p e c i a l i s t a t A P M Te r m i n a l s . “Strengthening collaboration with OEMs is paramount for acquiring deep insights into equipment technology that align with maintenance objectives.” Two-way benets Fo r O E M s i t p r o v i d e s a n opportunity to build a stronger longterm relationship with APM Terminals through a joint commitment to service success. A long-term partnership can help support effective product design, by providing a 360-degree feedback loop to identify potential product issues at an early stage and open doors to exploring collaborative innovation. From an OEM cost saving perspective, resulting improved equipment reliability can minimise breakdowns and therefore costly technical assistance or warranty claims. Last year, wire rope manufacturer, Verope, became one of the first OEMs to contribute their knowledge and expertise in wire rope management in close cooperation with APM Terminals Callao in Peru.
