JN Port constantly monitoring the progress of Cyclone N AV I M U M B A I : According to a recent statement from JNPT, the authorities at the Port has been constantly monitoring the progress of Cyclone Tauktae vide weather reports from IMD, DG Commcentre. On 17th May, 2021 at around 0800 hrs the cyclone system has passed around 250 nautical miles West of Mumbai and is at present expected to make land fall in Gujarat Coast at around 0001 hrs on 18th May, 2021.
The Wind, atmospheric pressure and other weather parameters are being constantly monitored and a OSV of ONGC, MPV PSV1 has been called to Pilot station at 1815 hrs for berthing into ONGC Nhava Base. The Ships which were planned by the BMCT, APMT, BPCL, JNPCT, NSICT & NSIGT to be berthing at their respective terminals have conveyed their ETA which is after 0100 hrs on 18th May, 2021. They will be picking up Pilot after 0100 hrs on 18th May, 2021 subject to favorable weather conditions .

Major Ports handle 30% more cargo in April (YoY) NEW DELHI: Cargo handled at India’s dozen state-owned major ports soared 29.52% in April to 61.528 million tonnes (mt) from 47.506 mt a year ago. With the exception of New Mangalore Port Trust which posted a volume decline of 3.84%, all the other ports got off to a solid start in the first month of fiscal 2022, reversing the fall in traffic seen in FY21 due to the coronavirus-induced demand compression. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s biggest stateowned container port located near Mumbai, reported a 60% rise in volumes to 6.325 mt from 3.953 mt last year, according to the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways. Logistics Data Bank (LDB) Services extended to 9 SEZs across India Aims to provide last mile container visibility to enhance Export and Import supply chain NEW DELHI: NICDC Logistics Data Services (NLDS), a joint venture between the Government of India, represented by the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust, and NEC Corporation, a leader in the integration of IT and network technologies, announced extension of its Logistics Data Bank (LDB) services at 9 major Special Economic Zones (SEZ) across India to improve last mile container visibility. Major SEZs include Visakhapatnam, SEEPZ Mumbai, Surat, MEPZ Chennai, Cochin, Kandla, Noida, Mangalore and Dahez SEZ. With container tracking services now live at these locations, exporters and importers will be able to get near real-time location information on container movement from ports to SEZs. Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Ichiro Oshima, CEO, NLDS said, “The need for more accurate end-to-end container visibility was apparent when exporters and importers experienced significant delays in container movement. With end-to-end container tracking, users can now easily identify the bottlenecks and ease their operations. Maersk strengthens Contract Logistics & Distribution footprint in Vietnam with three new facilities VIETNAM: A.P. Moller-Maersk strengthens its contract logistics and distribution capabilities in Vietnam with three new facilities coming into operation in Song Than and Bac Ninh. These warehouses, together with the other 11 self-managed facilities in the country, will enhance Maersk’s logistics capacity for future growth in Vietnam. “Contract Logistics and Distribution is a crucial component in our customers’ supply chains. Fully equipped with multiple racking systems, strong rooms, security cameras and sprinkler systems, the three new facilities will improve inventory management experience for clients from Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam as well as enabling Maersk’s clientele to have a more efficient supply chain. Located 25 km from Ho Chi Minh City, the new distribution centers in Song Than offer premium Contract Logistics and Distribution serviceto support the substantial trade growth in South Vietnam. These two facilities are 10,000 square-meter (sqm) and 9,700 sqm respectively, which will cater for the increasing needs from customers in the Tech, FMCG and Retail sectors, where inventory management and cargo flow control are essential to their supply chains. A.P. Moller - Maersk's new facility in Bac Ninh, 23km from the capital Hanoi and 120km from the Hai Phong port. Maersk is also doubling down the logistic footprint in North Vietnam by expanding the scale of its new facility in Bac Ninh, 23km from the capital Hanoi and 120km from the Hai Phong port. At around 18,000 sqm, Maersk Bac Ninh 15# is situated next to Maersk Bac Ninh 16#, another Maersk distribution center which was officially opened in December 2019. By scaling up the area to a combined 29,000 sqm, the Bac Ninh facilities will enable Maersk to offer end-to-end solutions to customers located in the increasingly strategic area of North Vietnam where enhanced infrastructures not only allow a more effective national connectivity, with but also support trade growth.
NYK Group Company Obtains DNV Certification for Online Cargo-Handling Training TOKYO: Cargohandling simulator training for LNG carriers and oil tankers conducted by NYK SHIPMANAGEMENT PTE LTD (NYKSM; headquarters: Singapore) in an online environment has been certified by DNV, a ship classification association based in Norway. This is the first time in Asia that DNV certification has been obtained for online cargo-handling simulator training for oil tankers.
The DNV certification confirms that the training content follows the guidelines provided in the IMO model courses and that the training is conducted effectively. The training is provided for seafarers boarding LNG carriers and oil tankers for the first time. It follows the IMO model courses and comprises content unique to NYK Group, including NYK’s safety culture, operational standards, current business conditions, and history. Use of the cargo handling simulator is also included. Before this training was made available, participants would need to travel to the NYKSM training center in Singapore for simulator training. However, a cloud-based cargo-handling simulator now makes training in
an online environment possible. All content, including cloudbased cargo-handling simulator training and lectures, can now be provided online in compliance with the IMO model courses. This has made it possible for NYK Group seafarers aboard LNG carriers and oil tankers to complete training without having to travel to Singapore. NYKSM introduced online ship handling training in September 2020, and afterward added online cargo-handling training for LPG carriers and car carriers. The company is currently working to utilize all resources to introduce online and e-learning options to all types of training. The NYK Group will continue its efforts to train seafarers even during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the continuing necessary transport of food, supplies, and energy resources. On February 3, NYK released the NYK Group ESG Story, which aims to further accelerate the integration of ESG into the company’s management strategy. This online cargo-handling training achieves this ambition. To strongly promote ESG management, NYK is encouraging new value creation as a sustainable solution provider.

Major Ports handle 30% more cargo in April (YoY) Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Chennai Port Trust grew by 60.18% to 3.910 mt from 2.441 mt a year earlier. Kamarajar Port Ltd handled 3.198 mt in April, a growth of 53.53% on the 2.083 mt handled last year. Mormugao Port Trust handled 2.363 mt in April from 1.557 mt, posting a growth of 51.77%. V O Chidambaranar Port Trust grew by 42.05% to 3.263 mt from 2.297 mt a year earlier. Cochin Port Trust handled 2.591 mt of cargo in April from 1.874 mt last year, a growth of 38.26%. Paradip Port Trust handled 11.207 mt, a growth of
30.86% on the 8.564 mt last year. Kolkata Port Trust handled 4.871 mt from 3.741 mt in April last year, posting a growth of 30.21%. Deendayal Port Trust handled 10.452 mt in April from 8.674 mt last year, a growth of 20.5%. Mumbai Port Trust handled 4.677 mt from 4.088 mt in April last year, with a growth of 14.41%. Visakhapatnam Port Trust handled 5.570 mt from 5.009 mt last year, posting a growth of 11.20%. New Mangalore Port Trust handled 3.101 mt from 3.225 mt last year, a decline of 3.84%. Iron ore including pellets recorded the highest
growth in April of 96.51% at 6.530 mt from 3.323 mt last year. Container cargo jumped 73.80% in April to 942,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 542,000 TEUs last year. The 12 ports handled 8.519 mt of thermal and steam coal from 7.842 mt last year, a growth of 8.63%. Coking coal volumes rose 10.37% to 4.726 mt from 4.282 mt last year. Crude oil, petroleum products, LPG/LNG cargo jumped 6.71% to 17.420 mt from 16.324 mt last year, the ministry said.

The idea for NLDS’ service extension was first proposed during NLDSL’s Logistics Data Bank (LDB)’s Open House Session held in Januar y last year under the chairmanship of Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industr y and Internal Trade. During the event, stakeholders in the Export Import industry requested to install RFID readers at industrial zones, manufacturing hubs and SEZs, which would enable them to receive timely updates on last-mile cargo and improve supply chain efficiency. Subsequently, NLDS proposed to install RFID readers through various consultations and discussions with key stakeholders from industry and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. NLDSL approached individual SEZs
separately to conduct site surveys prior to the RFID system going live. As of today, site surveys have been conducted for the nine (9) SEZs between January and February 2021 and the installation of RFID readers was recently completed. Speaking on the development, Mr. A. Bipin Menon, Development C o mmis s io n e r, N O I DA S p e cial Economic Zone, highlighted the importance of the LDB project stating that, “Technology has been playing a cr ucial role in revamping major businesses and sentiments of the i n d u s t r y. S u c h t r a d e f a c i l i t a t o r initiatives during turbulent times will help the manufacturing, warehousing and trading sectors at SEZs to reduce their logistics cost and improve tracking of their container movement.” Mr. Surajit Sarkar, COO, NLDS said, “We are in conversations with multiple SEZs across the country to
explore the possibilities of installation of RFID readers for providing better and end to end visibility for exporters and importers.” The NLDS container tracking solution and its analytics report have significantly benefited various stakeholders in supply chain operations by considerably reducing the port dwell time and overall transportation time for export and import of shipments. Sharing his views, Mr. Abhishek Chaudhary, VP-Corporate Affairs, NICDC and Director NLDS stated, “Reducing overall logistics cost and providing end to end visibility is the need of the hour for the Indian Logistics Industry. In a major strategic push, we have extended LDB services to 9 major S E Z s o f I n d i a . Wi t h t h e n a t i o n embarking on digital transformation, LDB will play an instrumental role in further improving the efficiency of the sector by integrating across multiple platforms.”
Import-export resumes through Benapole Land Port KOLKATA: Import and export between Bangladesh and India through Benapole land port resumed after closure for three days on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of Muslims. A total of 95 trucks carrying different items of goods entered Bangladesh from India while 42 trucks of goods entered India from Bangladesh from this morning to noon, sources at the
Benapole Port said. Many goods laden trucks are still waiting to enter Bangladesh from the Indian side, they added. With the resumption of import and export the port has become busier as well, according to sources. “Import and export have resumed after a three-day shutdown on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. All fieldlevel officials have been instructed to
load goods from the port and unload the goods from Indian tr ucks,” said Benapole Port Director Abdul Jalil. Sajedur Rahman, General Secretary of the Benapole C&F Agent Staff Association, said hundreds of goods laden trucks got stranded at the Indian Petrapole Port on the occasion of Eid holiday. With the resumption of import and export, the liveliness of the port has returned.
Pulses imports removed from restricted category MUMBAI: In a move aimed at keeping prices under a check, the Government has recently amended the pulses import policy by moving tur, urad and moong from ‘restricted’ to ‘free’ category. The Commerce Ministr y in a notification said the revision in pulses import policy is with immediate effect and will for the period up to October 31, 2021. Further, import consignments of these items with Bill of Landing issued on or before October 31 shall not be
allowed by Customs beyond November 30, the notification said. Jitu Bheda, Chairman, Indian Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), said: “The Open General License (OGL) under the free import policy will enable the traders to quickly import the required quantity of tur, moong and urad to fulfil the shortage of the pulses. We are expecting minimum 250,000 tonnes of tur, 150,000 tonnes of urad and around 50,000-75,000 tonnes of moong beans to be imported primarily from
M y a n m a r, A f r i c a n , a n d t h e neighbouring countries.” The prices of majority of the pulses are ruling higher than the minimum support price (MSP) levels by about 5-30 per cent due to lower than projected crop, which was impacted by mainly by unseasonal rains. Tur prices are ruling higher by 10-12 per cent above the MSP of Rs. 6,000 per quintal, while urad is trading higher by about 30 per cent over MSP. Moong is ruling higher by about 5 per cent.

Mansukh Mandaviya along with Piyush Goyal, interacts with the industry on preparedness for cyclone Taukate • Piyush Goyal says Pharma industry and the Oxygen producers should be given priority in pu ng back their opera ons; Asks railways to be in ready mode to rush relief material and provide help • Mansukh Mandaviya emphasizes on pre-planning and pre-posi oning so as to minimize the damage NEW DELHI: The Union Minister of R a i l w a y s , C o m m e r c e & I n d u s t r y, Consumer Affairs, and Food & Public Distribution Shri Piyush Goyal, along with the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Mansukh Mandaviya interacted with the industry leaders about the likely impact of Very Severe Cyclonic S t o r m “ Ta u k t a e ” ( p r o n o u n c e d a s Tau’Te)and preparedness for facing the same. The meeting was called on the d i r e c t i o n s o f t h e H o n’ b l e P r i m e Minister.The meeting was also attended by senior officers of Indian Meteorological Department, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Water ways, Railways ministry, NDMA, and states of Gujarat, Maharashtra & Goa, and UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. DG, IMD informed that the “Tauktae” is very likely to move north-northwestwards and reach Gujarat coast NDMA informed about their preparedness for the relief and rescue actions to be taken in the affected areas, and deployment of various NDRF teams in the region. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Wa t e r w a y s i n f o r m e d a b o u t t h e i r assessment of the situation and steps being taken and envisaged to deal with it in an effective and timely manner. The states’ officials informed that the situation is being closely monitored by them, and the administration is geared up to meet the exigencies. The Industry leaders gave certain suggestions, and also informed about the actions taken by them for mitigation and reducing the impact of the cyclone. In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic prevalent, the issue of continuous availability of Oxygen, maintaining buffer stocks of medicines and essential items, & well-being of patients in the areas likely to
be affected was stressed in the meeting. Smooth functioning of Communication facilities and other utilities also came up in the meeting. Shri Goyal said that the views expressed by the industry participants and the State officials show their confidence and readiness in handling such a natural calamity in an effective manner. He said that power will be the major focus area, as the same has to be switched off due to safety reasons for sometime, but should be restored quickly as per the conditions. The Minister said that there is a merit in making available satellite phones at strategic places, for better communication, He expressed satisfaction at the fact that the industry has stored emergency spares and fuel for the duration. Shri Goyal urged all of them to keep their eyes and ears to the ground, and work in the spirit of cooperation. He said that there could be a surge effect postcyclone, and hence requested all to keep their eyes & ears to the ground, monitor the situation & support the health care personnel. He also stressed that all the people who are involved in the production of liquid medical Oxygen, Phar ma industry, and all those who make cylinders or products in the supply chain of the Pharma industry will be given priority to come back into operation. The helplines of various authorities should be up all the time, and respond in a empathetic m a n n e r. H e d i r e c t e d t h e R a i l w a y authorities to closely monitor the situation, and be ready to rush the essential items to the affected areas in the shortest possible time, and provide help in any manner. The Minister said that 24 X 7 control room to monitor cyclone progress is already functioning while Intensive patrolling of assets (OHE & track) has
begun. Railways has also taken several measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of Oxygen. The Minister said that relief material should be properly channelized so that the Common man gets the relief and the unscrupulous elements are not able to take advantage. He urged all the big industries to look after their local area to support small industries, suppliers & neighbourhood industry associations. Shri Mansukh Mandaviya said that Coastal areas in the Western India are having a lot of industries. He said that the state Governments are equipped for undertaking the relief and rescue operations, and have the experience in doing so. He, however, emphasized on preplanning and pre-positioning so as to minimize the damage to essential equipment, cargo or people. Meanwhile a spokeperson from Essar which manages Essar Ports’ said, “as the cyclonic stor m intensifies, we are prepared with all the necessary precautions to tackle any eventuality that may hit the coast. We are working in close coordination with the local administration and as a measure of precaution, we have moved all our floating crafts to inner anchorage. All the equipment at Jetty and Shore are lashed for cyclonic conditions. Safety is core to our philosophy be it manpower or equipment. To ensure w o r k p l a c e s a f e t y, o p e r a t i o n s a n d movement of manpower has been suspended and will only resume once the conditions improve. Additionally, our emergency response team is in place to handle adverse situation during or post cyclone to act on, if needed. These are times that test our resolve to the fullest. We have stepped up and doing everything possible in the best interest of the situation.”
Tuticorin Port handles coal ship with highest parcel size TUTICORIN: V.O. Chidambaranar Port created a new record for handling a coal vessel with highest parcel size. The Panama flagged vessel ‘MV BASTIONS’ with 245 metres of Length , 43 metres of Beam, 1,19,503 DWT and draft of 13.04 metres arrived from the Port of Muara Berau, Indonesia, with 92,935 Tonnes of Coal consigned for Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd., bettering the previous handling of highest parcel size for vessel ‘MV Star Sirius’, with 92,028 Tonnes of Coal handled at the Port on 11.04.2021.
The vessel berthed at Berth No.IX commenced its discharge using 3 Harbour Mobile cranes capable of discharging 50,000 Tonnes per day. The entire consignment was completed by the dusk of 1 6 t h M a y, 2 0 2 1 . T h e Ve s s e l a n d Stevedoring Agent for the vessel is M/s. Cargo handling through VOC Port has started to pick up pace and the Port has seen traffic growth of 42% in April 2021, when compared to the cargo traffic handled in April 2020.
Marine products export body arm gets patent for mud crab hatchery tech COCHIN: Mud crab hatchery technology, developed by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), has received patent by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks for 20 years from 2011 to 2030, which is set to boost the growth of the aquaculture sector. The hatchery technology for mud crab (scientific name – Scylla serrata), is much in demand in southeast Asian countries where live crabs are highly preferred as a delectable seafood. RGCA, the research and development
arm of the government-owned Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), had applied for the patent in 2011. “It will go a long way in meeting the seed requirement of farmers who intend to undertake diversified species for aquaculture instead of concentrating on s h r i m p f a r m i n g a l o n e . M P E DA i s dedicating this achievement to the aquaculture farmers of the country for their support and to the young scientists of RGCA who have worked tirelessly to achieve this morale-boosting feat,”
MPEDA chairman KS Srinivas, who is also president of RGCA, said in a statement. Keeping in view the huge demand of mud crab, particularly in southeast Asia, MPEDA had initiated a pilot project for mud crab seed (known as crab-instar) production in 2004. But, the commercial hatchery started only in 2013 with a capacity of one million species per annum. Due to its growing demand, the seed production capacity of RGCA’s mud crab hatchery has now been increased to 1.4 million.

APM Terminals agrees divestment of APM Terminals Rotterdam to Hutchinson Ports THE HAGUE: APM Terminals (APMT) and Hutchison Ports are pleased to announce that Hutchison Ports Netherlands B.V., a subsidiary of Hutchison Ports, has signed an agreement to acquire the Rotterdam container terminal APM Terminals Rotterdam (APMTR) from APMT. APMTR is located adjacent to Hutchison Ports’ existing ECT Delta terminal in the Maasvlakte area of Europe’s largest port. It has 1,600 metres of deep-water quay serviced by 13 ship-to-shore gantry cranes. Commenting on the divestment, Rolf Nielsen, Head of Hub Terminals APMT said, “We are pleased to announce our divestment of APMTR to Hutchison Ports. Over the past eighteen months, the various parties have worked intensively and constructively together with all relevant parties, including APMTR’s works council and trade unions, to complete the transaction. The sale gives APMTR the best possible future with a good security for jobs for its employees.” Commenting on the acquisition, Clemence Cheng,

GAC onboard for Sweden’s first Inland Shipping Shuttle Service Stockholm, Sweden Inland cargo shipping specialist Rederei Deymann has appointed GAC Sweden AB as the port and booking agent for their new shuttle service linking the country’s capital and one of its key logistics hubs. It will be Sweden’s first inland waterway container barge service. Starting from 18 May, the 110m long barge ‘Emelie Deymann’ will carry up to 208 TEU containers twice weekly between Stockholm Norvik port on the Baltic coast and Västerås 100km to the west in central Sweden. Västerås is one of the country’s main logistical hubs due to its central location in the densely populated Mälardalen region and excellent links to the road, rail and shipping network. GAC Sweden will work with Rederei Deymann’s commercial representative in Sweden, Barge Transport Sweden AB (BTSA), to run the service. BTSA will set rates for the service and GAC will handle bookings as well as provide ship agency and supporting services for the barge at Stockholm, Västerås and along the route linking the two. The service is in line with the Swedish Government’s initiative supporting the movement of goods by water, which has less
impact on the environment than transportation by road. It is the first example in Sweden of a regular transportation ser vice using smaller EU inland waterway classed vessels for a reliable, viable alternative to road transportation which helps reduce congestion and carbon dioxide emissions. Johan Ehn, GAC Sweden’s Managing Director, says: “At a time when sustainability is at the top of many agendas, we are delighted to play a key role in this new, ecologically friendly solution using the country’s inland waterways. It is in line with our strategy to constantly offer proactive and innovative ways to serve our logistics customers in the energy sector and beyond.” Lars Rexius, BTSA’s Marketing and Commercial Manager, says: “We are proud to be working with Deymann and GAC Sweden to offer Swedish industry an alternative that is both cost effective and environmentally friendly. We believe the timing is right and we have a great support also from the ports involved.”

Global innovation platform Plug and Play is launching a maritime programme in Antwerp ANTWERP: The Global innovation platform Plug and Play is launching a maritime programme in Antwerp. Plug and Play Maritime helps international start-ups to test and develop new technologies at the Port of Antwerp. Global renewal under local leadership Plug and Play Maritime is collaborating with five cofounders for this: the City of Antwerp, CMB, DXC Technology, Euronav and Port of Antwerp. The initiative will be based on the pre-campus of Maritime Campus Antwerp, a co-working space where start-ups can scale up their activities. Technology for the future of shipping Participants will look at such things as: • Innovations for more clean fuels and energy; • Big Data and Internet of Things; • Innovative logistics; • Efficient shipping; • Autonomous shipping; • Sensors. Innovation as a service The core of Plug and Play Maritime is a twelve-week, sixmonth programme on open innovation. International startups will tackle specific challenges, as submitted by the
co-founders. The goal is to present at least one joint project per start-up at the closing event. The first series of programs are scheduled for June 2021. The port as a testing ground for innovation The platform is of strategic importance for the sustainability of the maritime sector in Belgium and beyond. CMA CGM Group to set U.S. East Coast and Canada Big Ship Record with the CMA CGM MARCO POLO COPENHAGEN: The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, announced today that it will break its own record next week for the largest vessel to ever visit the U.S. East Coast and Canada. The 16,022-TEU CMA CGM MARCO POLO will first set the Canadian record with a stop in Nova Scotia on Monday, May 17. The ship will then break the U.S. East Coast record when it calls New York on Thursday, May 20. An impressive vessel scheduled to set seven North American big-ship records in 11 days The CMA CGM MARCO POLO is a massive ship. With a length equivalent to more than 3.5 football fields, the containers fitting on the vessel would span nearly 61 miles if placed end-to-end. In addition to the Canada country and U.S. East Coast records, the CMA CGM MARCO POLO will set individual big-ship records at every port it visits on the North American east coast. This includes Port of Halifax (May 17), Port of New York and New Jersey (May 20), Port of Virginia (May 23), Port of Savannah (May 26) and Port of Charleston (May 28). Increased capacity to serve our U.S. customers’ needs The CMA CGM MARCO POLO is sailing on the company’s Columbus JAX service, travelling from South Asia to the East Coast of America. The debut of the vessel on the JAX reflects an increase in capacity.
