GMB to get Rs. 2,037cr for Port Connectivity GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has secured an in-principle approval for Rs 2,037 crore to finish infrastructure works of port connectivity. The initiatives, on which work is predicted to start out shortly, will give a serious push to port-led improvement within the State. Key sources aware of the matter mentioned that the GMB’s proposed plan has acquired the in-principle nod underneath the central authorities’s Gati Shakti, Sagarmala, and Bharatmala programmes. Sources mentioned: “Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has accepted the proposal for Rail and Highway connectivity of GMB Ports for the speedy evacuation of cargo.” Sources added: “Strengthening connectivity of those non-major ports is predicted Cont’d. Pg. 15 to assist merchants and small importers.”
Wan Hai Lines to launch Independent CI7 Express Service TAIPEI: Wan Hai Lines will expand further on its already extensive Asia and East India network by launching a new weekly ser vice between South China – Vietnam and Cont’d. Pg. 17 East India (CI7).

India’s merchandise export has reached almost $ 390 bn & will certainly cross $ 400 bn in current fiscal : Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal said that India’s merchandise exports have reached almost USD 390 billion as of March 14th and will certainly cross USD 400 billion in the current fiscal. He was addressing the Atmanirbhar Excellence Awards and 7th Technology Summit 2022, organized by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) in New Delhi. He added that India’s auto components industry had, for the first time, recorded a trade surplus of USD 600 million. It may be noted that India’s Automotive Industry is worth more that USD 100 billion and contributes 8% of country’s total export and accounts for 2.3% of India's GDP and is set to become the 3rd largest in the world by 2025. The Minister appreciated the resilient auto industry players who adapted and evolved to keep the industry going despite the five Cs, challenges of COVID-19, container shortages, chip shortages, commodity prices and conflict. Shri Goyal said the government was sensitive to auto sector’s concerns related to chips shortage. The recently approved Semicon India Programme with a budget of 76,000 Crores would help reduce import dependence and eventually help us become Atmanirbhar in the arena of chips, he said. He added that the nimble Government and agile Industry working together collectively could capture markets across the world. Highlighting India’s capabilities in the field of auto components manufacturing, the Minister asked automakers to make greater use of Indian made components. Stating that the Government held back stringent
norms regarding import substitution due to Covid-19 and industry assurances on securing equal market access, the Minister urged automakers to buy local and substitute imports. Congratulating the automotive for managing tech transitions smoothly, he pointed out that India could no longer afford to be closed and protective but will have to open up our markets along with striving to achieve greater penetration of global markets. Spelling out the opportunities for the future of mobility, Shri Goyal said that mobility of tomorrow would be dependent on the 7 Cs, - Common, Connected, Convenient, Congestionfree, Charged, Clean and Cutting edge. Shri Goyal gave a 4-point call for action to the auto components industry for to be future ready. He asked them to invest more in R&D, especially emobility, especially and battery tech. He urged them to disrupt existing targets, set higher benchmarks for performance and aspire to take 5 Indian companies in top 50 global automotive suppliers club. He encouraged them to identify core competencies and isolate key areas to reduce import reliance. He also called for designing world-class quality standards in the automotive sector. Quoting the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Shri Goyal said that mobility is the next frontier in our fight against climate change. He asserted India was poised at the cusp of an emobility revolution that in the next 15 years and mobility landscape is expected to undergo a deep structural change. He asked auto-makers to look upon sustainability as an opportunity and not a challenge. He asked the automotive industry to work on improving the e-mobility ecosystem, including fuel cell vehicles
with Hydrogen storage, higher LithiumIon battery capacity at low price and better charging infrastructure. He cautioned automakers that the cost of not investing in innovation and evolving to meet the needs of the future would be obsolescence. Referring to the budgetary push to the EV industry, the Minister said that India has the potential to become a hub for EVs and Integrated Circuits (IC) technology. Expressing concern that lower volume of production would prohibit scale of production thus affecting business viability, he called for the promotion of scale of production in e-mobility. Stating that the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has set the targets for Amrit Kaal, - the next 25 years, Shri Goyal said we cannot afford to rest on the laurels of the last 75 years as we celebrate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ this year. He added that the greater challenge before us, the greater responsibility that each one of us has on our shoulders is that in the next 25 years, the ‘Amrit Kaal’, as the Prime Minister has called it, is to make India a prosperous nation, a developed nation, a nation where every single citizen, especially the marginalized, is a stakeholder in the country’s progress and development. The Government has taken the following steps to increase India’s exports: I. The mid-term review (2017) of the Foreign Trade Policy (2015-20) was car ried out and cor rective
measures were undertaken. ii. Foreign Trade Policy (2015-20) extended by one year i.e. upto 31-3-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. iii. Assistance provided through several schemes to promote exports, namely, Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) and Market Access Initiatives (MAI) Scheme. iv. A Central Sector Scheme, ‘Transport and Marketing Assistance for Specified Agriculture Products’ was launched for providing assistance for the international component of freight to mitigate the freight disadvantage for the export of agriculture products. v. Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme and Rebate of State and Central Levies and Taxes (RoSCTL) Scheme have been implemented with effect from 01.01.2021. vi. Common Digital Platform for Certificate of Origin has been launched to facilitate trade and increase Free Trade Agreement (FTA) utilization by exporters. vii. 12 Champion Services Sectors have been identified for promoting and diversifying services exports by pursuing specific action plans. viii. Districts as Export Hubs has been launched by identifying products with export potential in each district, addressing bottlenecks for exporting these products and supporting local exporters/manufacturers to generate employment in the district. ix. Active role of Indian missions abroad towards promoting India’s trade, tourism, technology and investment goals has been enhanced. x. Package announced in light of the COVID pandemic to support domestic industry through various banking and financial sector relief measures, especially for MSMEs, which constitute a major share in exports.
Attention not paid to land port development after Independence, but good progress in last 10 years: Amit Shah NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that while the land port development had been ignored in the country since Independence much progress has been seen in the past 10 years, boosting the strength of the economy. Shah, speaking on the occasion of the 10th Foundation Day of the ‘Land Ports Authority of India’, said that while India should have focussed on improving road transport and land port after Independence but the due priority was given in the last 10 years following which unprecedented positive changes have been seen. “In the last 10 years, the Land Ports Authority of India has overseen unprecedented developmental work,” said Shah. He also stated that “India faces different challenges and opportunities at land borders with seven neighbouring countries”.
Shah underlined that India’s trade corridors are very essential. “We face different challenges and opportunities at our land borders with seven countries (China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Nepal & Bangladesh). We have strong relations with Bangladesh and it is reflected in the trade corridor with the neighbouring country. Our trade relations with Bangladesh are evolving,” said Shah. He added, “Almost 600 years ago, India and China had trade relations across the world.” The Home Minister said, “The developmental work initiated by the Authority in the last 10 years is being appreciated by everyone.” Shah also stated that “the feature of the Authority is not only to check bill of lading for business activity but promote the economic activity without comprising the security of the country”.
JSW PTPL loads highest ever iron ore in cape vessel PARADIP: JSW Paradip Terminal Private Limited (JSW PTPL) loaded highest ever of 1,41,200 tonnes of iron ore in a cape vessel ‘MV Star Lyra’ recently. The cargo was shipped by JSW Steel Ltd and this is the record-breaking iron ore loaded in a single vessel in Paradip Port since its inception. JSW Infrastructure and JSW Steel’s initiative has opened up the opportunities for the port users to ship iron ore & pellets in cape vessels at JSW PTPL to reduce the logistics cost. Also, JSW Paradip East Quay Coal Terminal commenced its commercial operations of 30 MTPA fully mechanized coal loading facility at Paradip Port on March 15, 2022. The terminal was inaugurated by P L Harnath (Chairman of Paradip Port) and Arun Maheshwari (JMD, JSW Infrastructure Ltd) in the presence of senior officials from APGENCO, NTECL, Sembcorp Energy India Limited, Chettinad Logistics etc. The terminal has berthed its first Panamax vessel ‘MV Captian P. Egglezos’ for loading of approximately 76,000 tonnes of thermal coal for Andhra Pradesh Power Development
Company Limited. JSW Paradip East Quay Coal Terminal shall be the prime infrastructure facility for the coastal thermal plant power producers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka etc. to move coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) to the end users.

Bahri forayed into the desalination sector in 2019, when it signed a 20-year agreement with Saudi A r a b i a ’ s S a l i n e Wa t e r Conversion Corporation (SWCC). The contract involves establishing three floating stations to Eng. Abdullah Aldubaikhi desalinate seawater and transfer it to the stations’ desalination tanks, producing 150,000 cubic meters of water a day. The company’s relocatable floating desalination barges ensure consistently high availability levels and comply with the best local and international standards. Located three kilometers from the shore, the barges feature cutting-edge water treatment processes involving seawater intake screens, integrated self-cleaning strainer with ultra-filtration, and reverse osmosis treatment and remineralization. The platforms, which are fitted on specially adapted barges that are over 123.3 m long and 36.6 m wide, have a modular design and therefore, can be quickly and easily deployed to other locations when needed. Notably, they are designed to minimize potential environmental impact on the coastal area and preserve diversification of the shallow sea ecosystem.

The study commissioned by DP World, the leading provider of smart logistics solutions, found that during 2022 trade is expected to expand further, due to a 16% increase in exports during 2021 and imports by 12%. Production levels have been unable to keep pace with demand leading to supply shortages and will limit import growth in 2022. Commenting on the report’s findings, DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said: “The report is evidence that rising freight rates, and low production levels, coupled with a volatile social-economic situation in Europe, will keep inflation high in 2022 as companies navigate a risky trading environment. But supply chains are adapting, and executives are positive about the future of trade, which will prove durable in the near to medium-term despite any inflationary fears.” The survey of 3,000 respondents, produced in partnership with Economist Impact captured perspectives of company leaders across the world. In addition to rising inflation, geopolitical tensions between the US and China continue to concern executives with 30% claiming that ongoing trade war
between the US and China is the top reason to be pessimistic about global trade. Despite the apprehension, and low production levels limiting imports, international revenue expanded for 68% of companies exporting freight in 2021, compared with 42% in 2020. 35% attributed that growth to an expansion of exports into new markets, as companies took advantage of new trade routes created by the pandemic. To cope with the pandemic and ease inflationary pressures, companies are also changing their strategic outlook. 48% now said diversifying their supplier base is their primary reconfiguration strategy, with efforts focussed on sourcing raw materials (24%) and managing shipping lines and logistics (21%). The highest cited reason for optimism for global trade was the growth of technology to ease supply chain issues, particularly the adoption of 5G to increase connectivity. Digitalisation can also streamline operations and increase efficiencies in trade. 67% of companies in the industrial sector are already using digital platforms for supply chain management. Businesses now have greater flexibility to move cargo faster, track progress in real time and automate customs clearance processes, helping address non-tariff trade barriers.
