CAI - Ahmedabad organised the sixth edition of "CAI Cricket League 2024"

A H M E DA B A D : T h e C o n s o l i d a t o r s Association of India (CAI- Ahmedabad Chapter) organized the sixth edition of the "CAI Cricket League 2024," which took place on the 27th and 28th of January (Saturday/Sunday) at H.L. Ground, Ahmedabad, exclusively for its members. A total of eight teams participated, showcasing great cricket skills, and the tournament was successfully completed with a lot of entertainment and excitement.

The winners were AWS ROKSTARS [Team owner - Asian Worldwide Services (India) Pvt. Ltd.], and the runners-up were the GLOBELINK EAGLES [Team owner Globelink WW India Private Limited]. This time, CAI extended invitations to the AHMEDABAD CUSTOM BROKERS’ ASSOCIATION and AHMEDABAD STEAMER AGENT ASSOCIATION for a social cause, and they took the lead in supporting to make the tournament more successful. A.P. Moller - Maersk delivered solid 2023 financial results in a difficult environment COPENHAGEN: A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) delivered solid financial results for 2023 in line with our financial guidance for the year. While volumes were up across most products and strong cost control helped improve results, rates continued to erode, particularly in Ocean. Revenue for 2023 was USD 51.1bn with an EBIT margin of 7.7% impacted by declining freight rates. 2023 was a transitional year following the extraordinary market boom caused by the pandemic. We secured solid financial results despite significantly changed circumstances, and we are well positioned to manage the expected headwinds in 2024. By taking early and decisive measures to enforce strict cost management, we adapted to the new reality. We need to see further progress in the logistics business to align with our targets, as we continue to push our transformation forward and enhance our competitiveness. The current market remains one of robust volumes, but while the Red Sea crisis has caused immediate capacity constraints and a temporary increase in rates, eventually the oversupply in shipping capacity will lead to price pressure and impact our results. The ongoing disruptions and market volatility emphasize the need for supply chain resilience, further confirming that Maersk's path toward integrated logistics is the right choice for our customers to effectively manage these challenges, said, Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk. Ocean saw strong schedule reliability and the continued efforts to

bring down costs helped ease headwinds from the rapid increase in supply. Financial results were still strong due to robust cost containment but eroded during the year, as continued challenging market conditions resulted in substantially lower freight rates. Logistics and Services continued to win new business but destocking at the beginning of the year followed by lower rates led to a decrease in revenue. Profitability declined compared with 2022 and an increased emphasis on cost management helped protect margins and reset the cost basis. Terminals continued the steady performance and secured another very strong year. Despite a decline in storage revenue given the market normalisation, diligent execution on operational excellence, cost control, price increases and utilisation led to Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) of 10.5%, ahead of mid-term targets. Financial guidance for 2024 Guidance is based on the expectation that global container volume growth in 2024 will be in the range of 2.5% to 4.5% and that Maersk will grow in line with the market. It is further expected that the significant oversupply challenges in the Ocean industry will materialise fully over the course of 2024. High uncertainty remains around the duration and degree of the Red Sea disruption with the duration from one quarter to full year reflected in the guidance range. Front-loading is expected towards the start of 2024.

Satellite-based toll collection likely before Lok Sabha polls : Nitin Gadkari NEW DELHI: The centre plans to implement satellite-based toll collection on highways before the Model Code of Conduct for the 2024 general election kicks in, Road Transport Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament. “ We a r e t r y i n g t o i m p l e m e n t satellite-based toll system very soon, perhaps before the Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha election,” Gadkari said

in Rajya Sabha. The technology, which has been under the Government’s consideration for over three years, will replace FASTags, which are prepaid and rechargeable tags utilising radio frequency identification (RFID). Po s i t i o n e d o n t h e v e h i c l e ’ s windscreen, FASTags allows a user to pay the highway fee electronically,

eliminating the need to pause at toll collection booths established by highway operators. F r o m 1 6 Fe b r u a r y 2 0 2 1 , t h e government has mandated the use of FA S Ta g f o r b o t h p r i v a t e a n d commercial vehicles. According to the regulations, vehicles lacking a valid or operational FASTag are subject to paying double the toll charge as a penalty.

Sarbananda Sonowal highlights Mega Ports in India by 2047 NEW DELHI: Six Port clusters out of which four port clusters i.e. Cochin –Vizhinjam Port cluster, Galathea South Bay Port, Chennai – Kamarajar– Cuddalore Port cluster, Pa r a d i p a n d O t h e r N o n - M a j o r Portscluster with capacity of more than 300 Million Tonnes Per Annum ( M T PA ) a n d t w o p o rt cluste rs i.e. Deendayal and Tuna Tekra Port

cluster, Jawaharlal Nehru – Vadhavan Port cluster with capacity of more than 500 MTPA are to be developed as M e g a Po r t s b y t h e y e a r 2 0 4 7 . The activities to be undertaken by Major Ports for augmentation of capacity and improving infrastructure are included in the Maritime AmritKaal Vision, 2047. The works for Infrastructure

enhancement and capacity augmentation in the Major Ports are already under progress through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and also through internal resources. This information was given by the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in the Lok Sabha.

Shipping Minister highlights growth of Indian Maritime Sector NEW DELHI: Government has launched the Sagarmala Programme with the objective of fostering port-led development, reducing logistics costs, and accelerating economic growth. The programme includes projects from various categories such as modernisation of existing ports and terminals, constr uction of RoRo/ RoPax& tourism jetties, enhancement of port connectivity, fishing harbours, skill development and technology centres, etc. There are 839 projects worth investment of ~Rs. 5.8 Lakh crore for implementation under the Sagarmala Programme. Out of which, 241 projects worth ~Rs. 1.22 lakh crore have been completed. These projects are being implemented by relevant central ministries, state governments, major ports, and includes projects s u p p o r t e d u n d e r P P P, i n t e r n a l r e s o u r c e s o f Po r t s , a n d E q u i t y Investments. Projects having high social impact but with no return or low Internal Rate of Return are being provided financial assistance under the Sagarmala Scheme of Ministry of Ports,

Shipping and Waterways. Till date, a total of 171 projects worth Rs. 4525 Cr. have been supported under Sagarmala scheme for partial funding. Out of 171 projects, 55 projects have been completed. More than 60,000 candidates have been trained under various initiatives of Sagarmala Programme, including Deen Dayal Upadhayay Grameen K a u s h a l y a Yo j a n a ( D D U G K Y ) convergence, Multi Skill Development Centre, Alang Safety Training Institute and Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Ship Building. The Government has engaged in collaborations with various countries through both multilateral and bilateral agreements in the maritime sector as well as joint maritime meetings. Further, the Government actively participates in partnerships with international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), of which India is a member state. The Government has taken several steps to promote coastal and cruise

tourism in India including priority berthing for cruise vessel, rationalised cruise tariff, discounts to cruise ships based on volume of their calls, removal of ousting charges, single e-Landing Card, E-Visa and on-ar rival visa facilities and waiving of cabotage for foreign cruise vessels etc. Additionally, under Sagarmala Programme, the Government has undertaken development of 63 infrastructure projects at 57 locations to facilitate passenger and cargo transportation through RoPax and Passenger ferry services, of which 10 projects have already been completed and 4 locations are now operational. This improved connectivity through R o Pa x s e r v i c e s h a s s t i m u l a t e d economic activities in coastal regions by facilitating unhindered movement of goods and people, which in turn has contributed to the development of local industries and tourism. This information was given by the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in the Lok Sabha.

US and EU impose Countervailing Duties on Indian Products due to RODTEP Scheme NEW DELHI: The U.S. and the European Union have now imposed countervailing duties (CVDs) on four Indian products, as a retaliation against the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products (RoDTEP) scheme introduced for outbound shipments in January 2021. The products for which countervailing investigations have been conducted and a final determination of CVD has been made include paper file folders, common alloy

aluminum sheet and forged steel fluid end blocks by the U.S. and certain graphite electrode systems by the European Commission (EC), Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel told Lok Sabha recently. “The Indian government and the affected exporters have strongly defended the subsidy allegation against various programs & schemes of the government, both at Central & State

level, in their written and oral responses during the conduct of investigations,” she noted. Asked if India is willing to lodge a formal dispute with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) if the matter was not resolved bilaterally, Ms. Patel said, “A n y p a r t y m a y a p p r o a c h t h e WTO Dispute Settlement mechanism, if a WTO member adopts any measure that are inconsistent with the agreements under the WTO.”

Construction of EDFC fully completed & 1220 Km out of 1506 Km of WDFC completed NEW DELHI: Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronic & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha that, that Ministry of Railways has taken up construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) viz. Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 Km) a n d We s t e r n D e d i c a t e d F r e i g h t Corridor (WDFC) from Jawaharlal

Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1506 Km). Construction of EDFC has been fully completed and 1220 KM out of 1506 KM of WDFC has been completed and train operations are going on in the completed sections. The construction of Dedicated Freight Corridors will reduce the logistic cost with higher axle load trains, Double Stack Container trains(DSC) and faster access to Northern hinterland by

Western Ports and will also lead to development of new industrial hubs and Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals. To ensure timely completion of Dedicated Freight Corridors, the Government has made timely provision of fund and monitored the project land acquisition activities by close coordination with State Governments directly and also in different forums i.e. Project Monitoring Group (PMG) etc.

Disruptions in Red Sea route likely to raise freight and forwarding cost by 25-30% NEW DELHI: Sustained disruptions in the Red Sea route is likely to raise the freight and forwarding (F&F) cost by 25-30% for corporates largely dealing in international trade, a report by credit ratings agency Ind-Ra said on February 9. Moreover, the working capital cycle is likely to aggravate by 15-20 days, and the impact could be higher for sectors such as agriculture and textiles, report said. The ongoing disruptions along the Red Sea route may raise freight and for warding costs for businesses engaged in international trade by 25-30%, according to India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), a subsidiary of the Fitch Group. The rating agency said the working capital cycle is also likely to worsen by 15-20 days, particularly hurting agriculture and textiles industries due to ongoing trade issues amid the Red Sea crisis. Working capital cycle refers to the time interval between payments made to suppliers and the revenue received from sales. The crisis arose after Yemen’s

Houthi group launched attacks, using drones and missiles, on commercial ships at the southern end of the Red Sea. As a result, many logistic companies have suspended their operations in the region and are taking longer routes to reach their destinations in the Middle East and Europe. The report also stated that pressures on cash flow, although moderate for large entities, will increase borrowings, especially for sectors such as iron and steel, auto and auto ancillaries, chemicals and textiles, which have seen a year-on-year rise in net leverage in the first half of the current fiscal. “The challenge is significant for the entities having low value addition, therefore thin margins. Although large entities have adequate elbow room to accommodate such incremental cost, delays and disruptions in supply chains will be key factors to watch for,” the report said quoting Soumyajit Niyogi, director, core analytical group, Ind-Ra. For medium-sized entities, the challenge is two-fold, both cost and

supply, and it will also impact their working capital cycle. “These entities have not benefited much from the softening of commodity prices, as free cash flow has remained sluggish for most of them,” he stated. The initial reaction can be seen in freight rates rising by 150% in the past 45 days, the rating agency said. The route constituted 40% of the total oil imports and 24% of the total exports during April to October 2023, it said. Major shipping lines have rerouted vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, which has increased time and costs, impacting both exports and imports, the agency said. This detour adds 12-15 days to voyages on a business-as-usual basis, which means there could be a further delay owing to any sudden operational challenges, it said. As much as 80% of India’s merchandise trade with Europe passes through the Red Sea, with key products such as crude oil, auto & auto ancillaries, chemicals, textiles and iron & steel being affected.

Engineering goods export to Russia hits record high as Ukraine war enters its third year NEW DELHI: India’s export of machine s, au to parts, ste e l and aluminum products, internal combustion (IC) engines, pumps and other items to Russia are on the rise, with outbound shipments in the ‘engineering goods’ category doubling in 2023 to cross a record $1-billion mark. This comes as demand continues to remain weak in key markets including Europe and the US, where India’s exports in the same category slipped over 10 per cent last year. Even as the Russian economy was slapped with crippling economic sanctions including being cut off from the Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) financial transaction processing system following the start of the Ukraine war, the output of Russian industries supplying goods to its military has surged several folds due to the extended war on its western border. While India’s exports to Russia have surged, it has only been able to cater to a minuscule portion of the demand due to lack of a smooth payment mechanism. While India and Russia suspended talks to settle bilateral trade in rupees last year due to trade imbalance, Russia’s trade with China has skyrocketed surpassing a record $200 billion, with 95 per cent of the trade taking place in Russian ruble and China’s yuan. “Requirements of engineering goods

in Russia have been rising. Orders are coming in large numbers and the rupee trade is taking place. But not the way we wanted. The quantum continues to remain small as some banks are executing the order and some refraining from it. Exporters are bullish on demand from Russia and exports by the end of the financial year could jump by 100-120 per cent compared to FY22,” Arun Kumar Garodia, Chairman, Engineering Export Promotion Council of India told. Official data from the commerce and industry ministry showed that India’s total exports to Russia in 2023 surged 40 per cent to cross the $4-billion mark, largely driven by engineering goods which nearly doubled to $1.32 billion in 2023 from $680 million in 2022. Sharp gains were seen in the drugs and pharmaceutical category and organic and inorganic chemicals too. On the contrary, India’s engineering goods export to Europe fell 11 per cent to $24.58 billion last year compared to $ 2 7 . 6 6 b i l l i on in 2022. Outbound shipments in the same category to the US slipped over 13 per cent to $17.27 billion last year compared to $19.56 billion. This was broadly in line with the United Nations Conference on Trade a n d D e v e l o p m e n t ( U N C TA D ) assessment that said that global trade slipped by a massive $2 trillion in 2023. Russia’s annual growth accelerated to 5.5 per cent in the third quarter from

4.9 per cent sequentially, which was the fastest pace of growth in more than a decade aside from a spike when Russia exited Covid lockdowns, exceeding the expectations of economists, Bloomberg reported. India’s export growth to Russia comes after the near collapse of Moscow’s trade with the West and Ukraine. Sanctions and countersanctions meant closer trade ties with China and India, the countries that are receiving bulk of the Russian oil that was redirected from the West. Sourcing from India and China comes after Russia banned import of over 200 goods from the West, including telecoms equipment, medical, vehicle, agricultural, electrical equipment, and timber products. Prior to the war, Russia imported a range of industrial items including electrical, electronic e q u i p m e n t , m a c h i n e r y, n u c l e a r reactors and boilers among other items from Ukraine worth nearly $4 billion. Interestingly, Russia’s banking sector has also shown resilience from the western sanctions. Bloomberg reported that the largest Russian bank, state-owned Sberbank PJSC, which was cut off from the SWIFT international payments system, recorded record ruble profit in 2023. Garodia said exports could take a hit in 2024 due to the disruption in the Red Sea route.

Chabahar Port is an important example of growing India-Iran co-operation NEW DELHI: The Iranian ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, on Friday said the cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the development of the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor is a testament to the growing bilateral ties. The Iranian embassy in the national capital on Friday, said, “Economic relations between Iran and India are developing across sectors. The cooperation between the two countries in the development of Chabahar port, as the golden gateway connecting nations along the Indian Ocean to Central Asia and the Caucasus, and the cooperation in the Inter national North-South Transport Corridor are important examples of the growing cooperation and bilateral ties. The Chabahar port in Iran is seen as a key component of India’s connectivity initiatives, holding immense significance as it provides a viable and shorter route for trade between India, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. INSTC is a multi-modal transportation route linking the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran and onward to northern Europe via St Petersburg in Russia. The INSTC envisages the movement of goods from Mumbai (India) to Shahid Beheshti Port – Chabahar (Iran) by sea, from Chabahar to Bandar-e- Anzali (an Iranian port on the Caspian Sea) by road, and then from Bandar-e- Anzali to Astrakhan (a Caspian port in the Russian Federation) by ship across the Caspian Sea, and

India introduces SOPs for approving new ports to ensure controlled growth in maritime sector NEW DELHI: India is preparing strict Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) for approving new ports and ensuring a regulated growth of the maritime sector, a senior government official said. Full capacity utilisation at existing ports will be prioritised before approving new ones. “The investments made in setting up ports should be safeguarded. These SOPs will ensure structured growth of Indian ports,” the official said. Ports, highways and other large logistic infrastructure projects, rely on long term market exclusivity to recoup the investments made in such large projects. A new port or terminal in the vicinity of an existing one may further delay profitability or even make an older asset unviable. India presently has 226 registered ports of which only 78 are operational.

Among those functional, 40 are handling only passenger traffic and are mostly in the Andaman & Nicobar (A&N) and Lakshadweep islands. “There are over 100 ports, largely notified by states, which have not been developed for several years or are making negligible progress. These pose an unnecessary risk to investment in nearby ports,” the official cited above said. The new SOPs mandate any new ports to be part of existing master plans of Centre or state governments. Even new terminals in existing ports should be part of master plans. New projects also need to have evidence of port connectivity infrastructure such as road, rail, or pipelines for cargo to be in place. This is aimed at reducing the risk of a new asset for future infrastructure creation.

The proposed SOPs will further empower the Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Ministry to decide which port can handle export-import (EXIM), Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), hazardous, and explosive cargo. While the Centre had a say in the pre-SOP regime as well, these permits – after the approval from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) – were largely issued at the discretion of state governments. “There rules will be more strictly applicable on ports seeking to facilitate EXIM and petroleum cargo movement,” a second official said, adding that passenger and domestic cargo focused ports will continue to get speedier approvals since the Centre wants to encourage coastal shipping.

JSW Infrastructure place “aggressive” bid for liquid terminal deal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port MUMBAI: Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Infrastructure Ltd has emerged the highest bidder to equip, operate and maintain the new liquid cargo berths 3 and 4 at Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai for 30 years by placing the highest royalty bid of Rs252 per ton in a tender. “JSW Infrastructure has quoted the highest royalty bid for the project,” said a Senior Official of J N Port Authority, that runs J N Port. “This will enhance the Port’s revenue and reduce congestion in handling liquid cargo,” he added. JSW Infrastructure outbid six others by a huge margin to emerge the highest bidder. The second highest bidder was IMC Ltd which quoted Rs 155 a ton. State-owned oil refining and marketing firm Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) placed Rs108.01 per ton as royalty. BPCL currently runs liquid cargo berths 1 and 2 at J N Port. Other bidders including J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd, Ganesh Benzoplast Ltd, Aegis Logistics Ltd and Amma Lines Ltd quoted less than 100 per ton. JSW Infrastructure, which has previously been very “conservative” in its port bids, surprised the industry with an aggressive price quotation for the liquid terminal bid. Unofficially, J N Port Authority was expecting a royalty price bid in the range of Rs50-75 a ton or maximum Rs80-90 per ton. “How much will JSW Infrastructure charge its customers to share Rs252 a ton with the port authority,” said a port industry official, noting that Mundra and Kandla ports are charging Rs250-300 a ton from customers for handling liquid cargo. J N Port Authority will call a special board meeting in the next few days to consider and approve the bid of JSW Infrastructure. The deal will bolster Mumbai-listed JSW Infrastructure’s stature as India’s second biggest private port operator and help expand its third-party customer base and entrench itself in synergistic businesses to increase revenue diversification. JSW Infrastructure currently has a capacity to handle some 170 million tonnes (mt) of cargo across its network of perts and terminals across India’s coastline. “We intend to pursue synergistic businesses such as development of container terminals, liquid storage terminals, container freight stations (CFS), multimodal logistics parks (MMLP) and inland container depots (ICD) to enable us to provide end-to-end logistics solutions to our customers,” the port operator said in the prospectus for the initial public offering (IPO) of shares to list the company on the stock exchange. Since going public in October last year, JSW Infrastructure has expanded inorganically through a slew of acquisitions. These include picking majority stake in PNP Maritime Services Pvt Ltd from SP Port Maintenance (a Shapoorji Pallonji Group Company) for Rs 270 crores for 50 percent of PNP port’s share capital plus

an additional one share; winning the rights to build and operate a greenfield non-major port at Keni in Karnataka; acquiring a license to run container trains held by Sical Multimodal and Rail Transport Limited from Pristine Logistics & Infraprojects Pvt Ltd; acquisition of 100 percent of JSW Middle East Liquid Terminal Corp, (formerly known as Marine Oil Terminal Corp) and purchase of a 5 mt a year capacity liquid storage facility at Fujairah Port in UAE. JSW Infrastructure is also expanding capacity organically by increasing the capacity of its existing ports/terminals. This includes adding 1.6 mt capacity to the 8 mt coal terminal it runs at Kamarajar Port in Tamil Nadu, raising the capacity of Jaigarh Port by building a 2 mt terminal for handling LPG, propane, butane etc besides constructing a non-major port at Jatadhar in Odisha. Port contracts at Union government owned major ports are decided on the basis of royalty per ton of cargo handled at the terminal with the entity placing the highest royalty winning the deal for 30 years. The additional liquid cargo berths at J N port can handle some 4.5 mt of petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL), edible oil, chemicals, molasses, and any new product/liquid bulk commodity. The new berths are designed to handle ships that can carry as much as 90,000 tons of liquid cargo requiring a draft of 15 metres. JSW Infrastructure will be free to set rates based on market conditions. The additional berths are planned to ease the pressure on the existing liquid cargo jetties 1 and 2 run by state-owned oil refining and marketing firm Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and cater to the additional liquid cargo demand at the port. The existing liquid cargo berths run by BPCL have a capacity to handle 6.5 mt and are operating at more than 90 percent capacity utilisation. The BPCL jetty mainly handles liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and chemicals such as ammonia. By 2029, the additional liquid cargo berths at JN Port are projected to handle 4.46 mt of liquid commodities. The capacity of the additional berths depends on the product mix and handling rates for various products. Higher share of POL products may increase the capacity of the jetty as it has high handling rates and bigger parcel size, per tender documents issued by the port authority.
