Concor extends 50% rebate in empty box movements till 31st March 2022 NEW DELHI: Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) has extended the 50 per cent rebate in rail freight tariff for movement of empty dry and reefer containers between gateway ports and the firm’s inland container depots, container rail terminals and private sidings till 31 March 2022, the company said in a notice to trade. India’s export-import trade, weighed down by record high ocean shipping rates for containers, will benefit from the extension in rebate period for inland haulage movements.

“In view of the overwhelming response received from trade, the competent authority has approved the extension of reduced rail freight rates for movement of exportimport dry and reefer empty containers from various gateway ports to Concor ICDs / private sidings / CRTs by 50 per cent, for a further period from 1 June to 31 March 2022 with same terms and conditions,” the trade notice said.

The ‘Maharatna’ public sector undertaking is India’s biggest rail hauler of containers. Concor’s move will force other container train operators to offer similar discounts or risk losing customers, trade sources said.

CBIC enhances facilities under the Customs (Import of Goods at Concessional Rate of Duty) Rules, 2017

NEW DELHI: The Finance Minister had in her Budget Speech this year announced that the Customs (Import of Goods at Concessional Rate of Duty) Rules, 2017 (IGCR, 2017) would be amended to boost trade facilitation. Accordingly, the Central Board of Customs and Indirect Taxes (CBIC) had immediately enhanced the scope of these rules on 2nd February 2021. The CBIC has now issued a Circular No.10/2021-Customs, dated 17th May 2021 in order to assist the trade in understanding the improvements in the IGCR, 2017 so that they may make full use of the new facilities. The IGCR, 2017 lay down the procedures and manner in which an importer can avail the benefit of a concessional Customs

duty on import of goods required for domestic production of goods or providing services. One major change that accommodates the needs of trade and industry is that the imported goods have been permitted to be sent out for ‘job work’. The absence of this facility had earlier constrained the industry especially those in the MSME sector which did not have the complete manufacturing capability in-house. Importantly, even importers who do not have any manufacturing facility can now avail the IGCR, 2017 to import goods at concessional Customs duty and get the final goods manufactured entirely on job work basis. Prime Maritime contributes to current Covid pandemic situation by carrying shipments of Medical Oxygen from Kuwait to Nhava Sheva MUMBAI: When the nation is reeling under the 2nd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Maritime has contributed by carrying shipments of Medical Oxygen from Kuwait to Nhava Sheva. The shipments of 6x20’ (Gr weight 55 MT) were loaded from Shuaiba Port on 5th May 2021 on MV Capt Kattleman and were transhipped at Jebel Ali for further on-carriage to Nhava Sheva on 10th May 2021. The second carrier being Nagoya Tower that berthed at APMT Nhava Sheva on 15th May 21. hat have been some of NEC's achievements or contributions in aiding the growth of India’s transportation sector? NEC brings proven solutions in seamless and touchless traveler movement by face recognition at airports (from check-in to boarding the aircraft), bus transit system, Intelligent Traffic Management system for better city road utilization/ incident management system, Intelligent Parking system to name a few. Through these solutions we are contributing in making Indian transportation sector handle larger traffic with ease and efficiently. Our experience of working with the local city government and consultants has been very encouraging and gratifying. In the last five years, we at NEC India have successfully implemented four large BRT/city bus Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) projects, three (03) smart cities Integrated Command & Control centre (ICCC) projects and Biometric solution across four (04) airports in India for seamless traveler movement under Digi-yatra program of Airport Authority Of India. With a great sense of pride we can say we have the maximum market share in the implementation of Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) in the BRT segment in India with many firsts like integration of NCMC open-loop payment card with our fare collection system in Ahmedabad and Surat, the launch of wholly cashless and contactless digital ticketing system in Ahmedabad, etc. Our Vehicle Planning Scheduling and Dispatch (VPSD) system in Ahmedabad resulted in vast savings of around 5060 lac per month for BRTS company due to much better, efficient, and data-driven planning and allocation of the fleet on available routes. Also, we have implemented three large smart city Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) projects with multiple innovative elements like Intelligent Tr a f f i c M a n a g e m e n t , S o l i d Wa s t e M a n a g e m e n t , Environment/Flood sensors, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD), Variable Messaging Displays (VMDs), Public Address (PA) systems, Emergency Call Boxes (ECB) and Citizen-Centric Mobile Apps, etc. NEC’s biometric-based boarding platform deployed at select airports in India helps smoothen airport operations and enhances passenger travel experience. The platform allows passengers who opt-in the service to pass through multiple touchpoints in an airport, such as airport entry, security clearance and boarding gate, by verifying their identity through facial recognition. This eliminates the need for passengers to show identification documents and boarding pass several times throughout the journey, resulting in a hassle-free experience and a shorter curb-togate travel time. In addition to the delivery of biometricbased boarding platform, the solution also includes facial recognition systems, kiosk terminals and biometric-enabled e-gates.

EC is a pioneer in ICT solutions globally. Can you impart your learnings and knowledge gained while working in India's transport industry? The most significant learning from our various project implementations is that coordination among multiple stakeholders with different city government levels is the key to successful and timely execution. Also, getting formal approvals and sign-off from various stakeholders on time is essential. Another critical success factor is coordinating with project management consultants (PMC) and advisors to the city government. They play a crucial role in giving the city government proper guidance for the multi-vendor integration ecosystem.

o you think public transport is a better ecofriendly solution for India?

As per studies, Bengaluru & Manila's congestion rates (71%) make them the most congested cities globally, followed by Bogota and Mumbai. According to the recent annual IQAir World Air Quality Report, 2020, India is home to 22 out of the 30 most polluted cities in the world With the ever-growing urban population and pollution in India, an increased number of private vehicles on the streets are becoming a menace. One of the most significant ways to keep the situation under control is to have an efficient public transit system. We at NEC are optimistic that good mobility and transportation solutions are the key factors to encourage people to choose public transport (with appropriate measures in the current scenario) and reduce traffic on streets. Even as the pandemic rages through the country, the commoner is still heavily relying on the public transport system, and the existing systems must be made more intelligent and more efficient.

Maersk secures daily rail services from Felixstowe to respond to Brexit and COVID-19 L O N D O N : A . P. M o l l e r Maersk- the global integrator of container logistics- has reached an agreement with GBRf - the third largest rail freight operator in the United Kingdom- to operate a rail service from Felixstowe to Newell & Wright in Tinsley all working days in the week. “As any other major container gateway in the world, Felixstowe has been under pressure due to the various disruptions affecting the supply chain such as Brexit, COVID-19 and the recent vessel blockage at the Suez Canal. By signing this agreement, we will be able to offer more reliable and flexible end-to-end services to both local as well as global importers and exporters,” explains Jeremy Haycock, Managing Director for United Kingdom & Ireland at Maersk. The Port of Felixstowe is Britain´s biggest and busiest container port, and one of the largest in Europe. Approximately 50% of traffic between Felixstowe and the North of England moves by rail. “Expanding our rail footprint from Felixstowe is key for us to increase supply chain flexibility for our customers through the current challenging times and help them addressing their individual specific logistics needs as the business condition and pandemic continue to evolve. We want to help bringing capacity and reliability to this critical supply chain link,” adds Jeremy Haycock. This new service will incorporate new eco-fret wagons

from the German company VTG Aktiengesellschaft, state-ofart containers which maximize the number of 20- and 40-foot containers which can be carried on a train, providing customers an eco-friendlier alternative to traditional wagons. “I am delighted we have agreed this contract with Maersk. We are a growing organisation, always looking for the next opportunity and working with Maersk was an absolute no-brainer. We hope this is the beginning of a great relationship,” says John Smith, Managing Director at GB Railfreight. MOL to support India towards Coronavirus TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. ( P r e s i d e n t & C E O : Ta k e s h i Hashimoto) recently announced that it has decided to supply and transport oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies to support the Indian medical system amid the ongoing rapid spread of the novel coronavirus. The oxygen concentrators arrived on May 14 by air in Mumbai and will be delivered to medical institutions around the country. MOL sincerely hopes the spread of COVID-19 will be settled as soon as possible.

Major Ports handle 30% more cargo in April (YoY) NEW DELHI: Cargo handled at India’s dozen state-owned major ports soared 29.52% in April to 61.528 million tonnes (mt) from 47.506 mt a year ago. With the exception of New Mangalore Port Trust which posted a volume decline of 3.84%, all the other ports got off to a solid start in the first month of fiscal 2022, reversing the fall in traffic seen in FY21 due to the coronavirus-induced demand compression. Jawaharlal Nehr u Port Tr ust (JNPT), India’s biggest state-owned container port located near Mumbai, reported a 60% rise in volumes to 6.325 mt from 3.953 mt last year, according to the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways. Chennai Port Trust grew by 60.18%

to 3.910 mt from 2.441 mt a year earlier. Kamarajar Port Ltd handled 3.198 mt in April, a growth of 53.53% on the 2.083 mt handled last year. Mormugao Port Trust handled 2.363 mt in April from 1.557 mt, posting a growth of 51.77%. V O Chidambaranar Port Trust grew by 42.05% to 3.263 mt from 2.297 mt a year earlier. Cochin Port Trust handled 2.591 mt of cargo in April from 1.874 mt last year, a growth of 38.26%. Paradip Port Trust handled 11.207 mt, a growth of 30.86% on the 8.564 mt last year. Kolkata Port Trust handled 4.871 mt from 3.741 mt in April last year, posting a growth of 30.21%. Deendayal Port Trust handled 10.452 mt in April from 8.674 mt last year, a growth of 20.5%. Mumbai Port Trust handled 4.677 mt from 4.088 mt in April last year, with a growth of 14.41%.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust handled 5.570 mt from 5.009 mt last year, posting a growth of 11.20%. New Mangalore Port Trust handled 3.101 mt from 3.225 mt last year, a decline of 3.84%. Iron ore including pellets recorded the highest growth in April of 96.51% at 6.530 mt from 3.323 mt last year. Container cargo jumped 73.80% in April to 942,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 542,000 TEUs last year. The 12 ports handled 8.519 mt of thermal and steam coal from 7.842 mt last year, a growth of 8.63%. Coking coal volumes rose 10.37% to 4.726 mt from 4.282 mt last year. Crude oil, petroleum products, LPG/LNG cargo jumped 6.71% to 17.420 mt from 16.324 mt last year, the ministry said.

Another major incentive now provided is to allow those who import capital goods at a concessional Customs duty to clear them in the domestic market on payment of duty and interest, at a depreciated value. This was not allowed earlier and manufacturers

were stuck with the imported capital goods after having used them as they could not be easily re-exported. Further, the procedure for availing the concessional Customs duty under these rules have been reviewed and rationalized. The required intimations and records can be sent

by email to the jurisdictional Customs officer thereby obviating any physical interface. The CBIC Circular also mentions that the list of Customs officers overseeing the IGCR, 2017 is available at https://www.cbic.gov.in/htdocscbec/home_links/enquiry-points-home.

Cisco digitising Indian Seaports & Inland Waterways in India NEW DELHI: Technology company Cisco has partnered some of the largest Indian seaports and inland waterways, including Visakhapatnam, Deendayal, Kolkata Port and IWAI (Inland Waterways Authority of India), to transform them by digitising their processes. The company is currently working on 14 projects across seven ports in India, of which three projects have been completed, and 11 are in various stages. This partnership is aligned with India’s Maritime Vision 2030, which focuses on boosting productivity and performance of nation’s maritime sector over the next decade. Digitising Indian ports and waterways can help reduce overall logistics cost while enhancing the country’s competitiveness to transform it into a global manufacturing powerhouse. Cisco’s initiative to digitise ports and waterways is centred on four

focus areas. The first is to improve turnaround time, which will directly impact the capacity and revenue. Preventing loss of revenue and equipment failure through real-time equipment monitoring is another focus area. Cisco also plans to help improve efficiency through energy management and analytics. Besides, it is also working on increasing employee safety and communications through a multi-channel communication and collaborative platform. Dave West, President for Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China (APJC) at Cisco says, “India has a goal to be a manufacturing powerhouse. To get there, they need efficient logistics. We’re partnering with some of India’s largest ports to improve turnover times, to prevent loss of revenue and equipment failures through real-time monitoring,

increase efficiency through energy management, logistics, and improving employee communications and safety.” “This will help India move closer to its goal to be a $5 trillion economy by 2025. I know this crisis (COVID-19) has caused a lot of pain. But at the same time, it really has us rethinking what the future will look like. And we can continue to play our part to help our customers leapfrog in this region,” West added. According to industry sources, the cost of logistics to GDP for some of the biggest economies in the world like US and Europe is at about 8 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively. Against this, the cost is much higher in India at 13 per cent o f G D P. T o e n h a n c e I n d i a ’ s competitiveness and transform it into a global manufacturing powerhouse, the country needs to bring the overall cost of logistics below 10 per cent of GDP.

Scotland seeks to ramp up trade and investment ties with India SCOTLAND: The Scottish National Party (SNP), which will continue in government after emerging as the single largest party in elections this month, aspires to ramp up trade and investment ties with India. Robert Taylor, a senior spokesman for the Scottish government in Edinburgh said: “India is an increasingly important market for Scotland and is identified as one of the top 20 countries for export growth.” In general, the devolved government plans to increase the total value of exports from 20 per cent to 25 per cent of Scotland’s gross domestic product (GDP). Taylor added the “potential areas of export growth with India include engineering and advance manufacturing, food and drink,

technology, energy, finance and business services, and chemical sciences.” It also seeks inward investors from India. A notable investment in the past has been by Piramal Health¬care, which has a facility in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire. This unit manufactures bio-conjugates, including antibody drug conjugates. India has a consulate in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. Scottish exports to India today are modest. In 2018, goods and services (excluding oil and gas) accounted for £295 million or just 0.9 per cent of Scotland’s international exports. The biggest sale was food and drink, representing £140 million, or almost half of total Scottish exports to India. Scotch whisky is a significant attraction for

Indian consumers, notwithstanding the 150 per cent duty being slapped on imports by India. In fact, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been at pains to plead with the Indian government that the tariff should be reduced. However, the Enhanced Trade Pa r t n e ¬ r s h i p a g r e e m e n t s i g n e d bet¬ween the two countries a fortnight ago did not extend this concession. India is the eleventh largest inward investor in Scotland. This could change if the incentives provided by the British government, combined with the gloomy climate in India in the foreseeable future leads to a spurt in outward activity on the part of Indian companies.

Commerce Ministry weighing proposal to revamp scheme for services exports NEW DELHI: The commerce ministry is weighing a proposal to overhaul a key scheme for services exporters to make it more broad-based and foolproof so that a wider pool of businesses, especially Covidhit MSMEs, get the succour. The revamped Service Exports From India Scheme (SEIS) may be part of the new five-year Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), which will be effective from October 2021, sources told. However, given the resource crunch faced by the government in the wake of the pandemic and the growing requirement of healthcare spending, much depends on the finance ministry’s approval to any such scheme, one of the sources said. Under the extant scheme, the government offers exporters duty credit scrips at 5-7% of the net foreign exchange earned, depending on the nature of services. The commerce ministry has also held discussions with exporters on the feasibility of bringing in a tax refund scheme for services exporters in future, along the lines of the Remission of Duties

a n d Ta x e s o n E x p o r t e d P r o d u c t s (RoDTEP) announced for merchandise exporters, another source said. However, given that services are fundamentally different from manufacturing, coming out with such a scheme for services and assessing refund rates will be a humongous exercise and may be prone to errors, some analysts say. The resource-starved government may also reduce benefits for consultancy and certain other professional services that it thinks corner a sizeable chunk of incentives. Moreover, a section of the government believes that since few players are grabbing most of the SEIS incentives, the scheme should be altered in such a fashion that it helps a large number of small businesses as well. Fa c t o r i n g i n t h e g o v e r n m e n t ’ s resource woes, the state-backed Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) has proposed that the Centre limit the SEIS benefits to a maximum of `5 crore per exporter for various services sectors. However, sectors, including travel and tourism, healthcare, education and

aviation, which have been worst hit by the pandemic should be exempted from this ceiling and allowed the full entitlement, according to the SEPC. This will take care of the interest of thousands of MSMEs in the sector, the SEPC feels. A l r e a d y, s e r v i c e s e x p o r t e r s , struggling to cope with the pandemic, have urged the government to release SEIS benefits for FY20 at the earliest, which could be to the tune of Rs 3,0004,000 crore. They also argue that their concerns shouldn’t be relegated to background. While merchandise exporters, they argue, have been allocated as much as Rs 39,079 crore for FY20 under the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS), the entitlement of services exporters under the SEIS for the same year would be about a tenth of that. So, the government shouldn’t have problem in clearing the SEIS dues. Of course, most of the MEIS benefits are also yet to be released, mainly due to the revenue shortage faced by the government in the wake of the pandemic.

APSEZ gets CCI nod for 25% more stake purchase in Krishnapatnam Port NEW DELHI: The C o m p e t i t i o n Commission of India (CCI) recently gave nod to proposed acquisition of additional 25 per cent stake of Adani Krishnapatnam Port Ltd by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. The acquirer already holds 75 per cent shareholding in

Adani Krishnapatnam Port. "As a result of the proposed combination acquirer will hold 100% shareholding and sole control of the Target," according to a release. The Commission approves proposed acquisition of additional 25 per cent shareholding of Adani Krishnapatnam Port Ltd by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, CCI said in a tweet.

In April, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone had said it has acquired 25 per cent stake of Vishwa Samudra Holdings in Krishnapatnam Port for Rs 2,800 crore. Krishnapatnam Port, located on the east coast of India in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, is an all-weather, deep water port has multicargo facility with a current capacity of 64 million tonne per annum.

APEDA Agriculture and Processed products exports jump 24% in FY21 NEW DELHI: After registering a 24% increase to close to $20 billion in exports of 37 agriculture and processed products promoted by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) during FY21, the government’s agri export body is eyeing at least 10-15% jump in such exports this year. “Export of bovine meat, dairy products, nutri cereals, processed food (conventional, organic and geographical indications) products, fresh fruits and vegetables are expected to increase more during 2021-22,” M Angamuthu, Chairman of Apeda, was quoted as saying recently. Demand for wheat, nonbasmati rice and other cereals is also likely to rise further, Angamuthu said. According to latest data, exports of Apeda products basket registered a 23.8% growth at $19.97 billion (`1,47,814 crore) during 2020-21 against $16.13 billion during 2019-20. While the non-basmati rice segment more than doubled to $4.8 billion, even higher than basmati, there is a drop of 7% to $4 billion in shipments of aromatic varieties in value terms. “With the continuous endeavour of Apeda in export promotional activities and

follow-up with exporters, trade a s s o c i a t i o n s , v a r i o u s ministries/departments of the Centre and s t a t e s a n d I n d i a n h i g h commissions/embassies abroad, there are good prospects of further growth in export of at least 10-15% in the current fiscal,” Angamuthu said. There were several factors, including increased demand for Indian products, that contributed to the growth. Moreover, an increase in global prices of some products helped Indian e x p o r t e r s t o r e a l i s e h i g h e r. Fo r instance, there was a 6% fall in shipments of buffalo meat in terms of quantity. But the per tonne realisation

value went up to $2,921 during FY21 from $2,754 in FY20 that helped overall export of buffalo meat to be at the previous year level of $3.17 billion. Indian exporters, supported by Apeda, tapped the opportunities that emerged during the Covid pandemic, said an expert. For non-basmati rice, Bangladesh had issued a quota of 4,00,000 tonne which Indian exporters supplied. Due to lower production, India’s main competitor Vietnam, too, imported rice, the expert said, adding this was possible because the country has also record rice production of 120 million tonne, creating huge surplus after meeting domestic demand of about 80 million tonne. Similarly, there was good demand of Ethyl alcohol from African countries that helped raise export of overall alcoholic beverages by 43% to $330 million. “We ensured supplies were not disrupted due to lockdown as all concerned government agencies provided necessary support to exporters and facilitated physical movement. While regulatory compliances were minimised, there was no compromise on quality,” Angamuthu said.

Exporters awaits release of Tax refunds worth Rs 40,000 cr as liquidity crisis continues Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan recently said that the new rates would be notified ‘very soon’ NEW DELHI: The world of Indian exporters is in a turmoil. They are yet to receive an estimated Rs 40,000 crore worth of tax refund under the erstwhile Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS), even as they wait for clarity on its replacement, the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme. According to the apex body of exporters, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), they along with other export promotion councils have recently informed the government that the ensuing liquidity crisis is affecting outbound trade. In a recent letter, the Ministry of Commerce has been told that crucial export sectors such as engineering goods, chemicals, leather and leather goods, heavy industries and key micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME)-run sectors such as handicraft and carpet exports, have taken a massive hit, as they are unable to accept new orders. The exporters community has also proposed a list of steps to the government, which can be quickly implemented to deal with the issue in the short term. The latest is a suggestion for the government to release tax-free bonds attracting 6 percent annual interest, with a three-year lock-in interval to present certainty of refund and guarantee liquidity for exporters. The apex body of exporters had earlier asked the government to at least acknowledge the gamut of claims that are pending with it, which would then allow banks to lend to exporters against the receivables, FIEO Director General

MEIS drama continues The hugely popular MEIS scheme, introduced in 2015, allowed exporters to ear n duty credits at fixed rates depending on their exports and destination. These could be used to pay for import duties. The scheme was discontinued by the government after the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled against it in November 2019. The United States had lodged a case against India at the top court for international trade disputes and argued that MSMEs were ‘trade distorting’, providing direct subsidies to exporters, which are prohibited under WTO rules. NITI Ayog’s stand In addition, the NITI Aayog pointed out that the mega scheme did little to boost India’s exports. “Public tax liability under the MEIS ballooned from Rs 20,232 crore in 2015-16 to Rs 39,000 crore in 2019-20, becoming unsustainable. However, exports remained stuck at $313 billion in 2019-20 against $310 billion in 2014-15,” a senior Commerce Department official said. Currently, the government is in the process of diverting MEIS funds into specific performance-linked incentive schemes, he added. But its alternative, the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme introduced in the last Budget with an initial allocation of

Rs 13,000 crore, has fallen short of exporters’ expectations. The finance ministry had in 2020 promised an outlay of Rs 50,000 crore, along with a similar formula as MEIS. Exporters are especially irked at the government for not announcing the rate of tax benefits under RoDTEP, more than 18 months after it was disclosed. “All MEIS benefits have been cut off from January 1, but the government is yet to announce tax refund rates for even a single export item under RoDTEP, a scheme initially brought to help remove export uncertainty,” added Sahai. Announcement soon Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan recently said that the new rates would be notified ‘very soon’, hinting that an announcement may be made within the next two weeks. However, the government has set such deadlines earlier as well. India’s exports continued to see major gains in April. Owing to a severe low base effect, India’s merchandise exports shot up by a massive 193.63 percent in April, after a big rise of 60 percent in March. The substantial increase is due to the extremely low volume of trade beginning in March last year when the nationwide lockdown was imposed. Trade was among the first industries to be hit in the initial days of the pandemic, after a nationwide lockdown was announced on March 23. However, the impact of lockdown in other nations had already begun, thus adversely affecting shipping flows even before it was imposed in India.

Grounded Container ship re-oated at Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port K O L K ATA : C o n t a i n e r s h i p ‘Kota Rajin’, which ran aground at the Syama P rasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata (former Kolkata Port Trust), was refloated on Sunday, 16th May. The secondary channels were opened to allow other vessels to come in during the period when refloating operations were on. “The forward part of the vessel, Kota Rajin, had run into the shore and had embedded there. It was refloated on Sunday afternoon,” he said. The container ship named ‘Kota Rajin’ ran aground at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust in Kolkata. Earlier, a small container ship ran aground at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, mirroring the

grounding of a huge container vessel in the Suez Canal in late March which caused a maritime traffic jam and disrupted global trade. A 600-twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity vessel, was heading for

SPM Port when it swayed away from the shipping channel, probably due to a steering fault. It, then, ran aground in the Falta stretch, partially blocking the channel and restricting movement of ships to the port.

India, China, South Africa fared 'relatively better' than other major economies in Q1 of 2021: UNCTAD PARIS: India, China and South Africa have fared "relatively better" than other major economies in imports and exports in the first quarter of this year, according to the latest UN data which said that global trade recovery from the COVID-19 crisis hit a record high during in the same period. The Global Trade Update by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recently said that in Q1 2021, the value of global trade in goods and services grew by about 4 per cent quarter-over-quarter and by about 10 per cent year-over-year. "Importantly, global trade in Q1 2021 was higher than pre-crisis levels, with an increase of about 3 per cent relative to Q1 2019," it said, adding that the trade rebound of Q1 2021 continues to be driven by the strong export performance of East Asian economies. In Q1 2021, the value of trade in goods was higher than pre-pandemic level, but trade in services remains substantially below averages. During the first quarter of 2021, global trade of COVID-19 related products remained strong. The UNCTAD data said that import and export trends for some of the world's major trading economies further illustrate the recovery patterns of Q1 2021. With a few exceptions, trade in major economies recovered from the fall of 2020. However, the large increases are due to the low base for 2020 and trade in many of the major economies was still below 2019 averages. The trend of a stronger recovery for goods relative to ser vices is common to all major economies. "China, India and South Africa have fared relatively better than other major

economies during Q1 2021. China's exports, in particular, registered a strong increase not only from 2020 averages but also in relation to prepandemic levels. In contrast, exports from the Russian Federation remained well below 2019 averages," it said. The data for India said that import of goods grew 45 per cent in Q1 2021 relative to the 2020 average while services imports were up 14 per cent. Export of goods for India grew 26 per cent for the period under review while services exports grew 2 per cent. Further, import of goods grew 10 per cent in Q1 2021 relative to the 2019 average while services imports were up 2 per cent. Export of goods for India grew 7 per cent for this period while services exports declined 3 per cent. UNCTAD said globally the ongoing trade recovery comprises most sectors. During Q1 2021, trade continued to rebound not only in sectors related to COVID-19 such as pharmaceuticals, communication and office equipment but also increased for most other sectors, such as minerals and agri-food. In contrast, the energy sector continues to lag behind and international trade of transport equipment remains well below averages, the UNCTAD said. Looking forward, the UNCTAD said trade is expected to continue growing into 2021. Trade growth is expected to remain stronger for East Asia and developed countries, while still lagging for many other countries. The value of global trade in goods and services is forecast to reach 6.6 trillion dollars in the second quarter of 2021, equivalent to a year-over-year increase of about 31 per cent relative to the lowest point of 2020 and of about 3 per cent to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. Giving the global trade outlook for

2021, the UNCTAD said the positive outlook for 2021 remains largely dependent on subsiding pandemic restrictions. "Nevertheless, the fiscal stimulus packages, particularly in developed countries, are expected to strongly support the global trade recovery throughout 2021. The value of global trade should also rise due to positive trends across commodity prices. "Still, there is uncertainty about how trade patterns will be shaped throughout this period," it said. Highlighting that the economic recovery will be "uneven", it said that some economies are posed to rebound stronger and faster than others. "In particular, the economies of China and the United States of America are expected to be the main drivers of global growth during 2021," it said, adding that this should also have positive effects on countries whose trade is relative more integrated with them (such as East Asian countries, Canada and Mexico). On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to continue disrupting the economies and trade of many developing countries, at least throughout 2021. The global economy shrank by 4.3 per cent last year, over two-and-a-half times more than during the global financial crisis of 2009. In April last year, countries took fiscal measures and central banks together injected a whopping USD 14 trillion as part of their efforts to mitigate the challenges posed by the novel coronavirus pandemic. The International Monetary Fund last month said that the global recovery is expected to be asynchronous and divergent between advanced and emerging market economies.

DB Schenker partners with NGO for setting up oxygen plant in Delhi hospital GURUGRAM: Integrated logistics services provider, DB Schenker has taken a slew of initiatives including partnering with an NGO for setting up an oxygen plant in a Delhi hospital to support COVID relief efforts. The company has also rolled out various employee-centric initiatives amid the coronavirus pandemic. The oxygen plant, which is being set up in Delhi, will assist in increasing the ICU and oxygen beds, D B Schenker said in a recent release. The company is also providing COVID-19 insurance cover to all the employees and has introduced several health initiatives, said Vishal Sharma, CEO – Cluster India and Indian SubContinent, DB Schenker. “DB Schenker in India is working with an NGO to set up an oxygen plant in a hospital in Delhi, having a total of 700 beds. The capacity of the plant would be 1,200 liters per minute which will assist to increase the ICU beds from 50 to 150, oxygen beds from present 370 to 620, thereby freeing up

oxygen for an additional 250 beds,” he said. Recently, DB Schenker in the UK supported India with an urgent free-of-cost shipment of 375 oxygen concentrator units to the Indian Red Cross in Delhi, Sharma added. Noting that these are challenging times for everyone, and there is need to support each other to overcome the COVID-19 crisis, he said the company has launched a COVID taskforce with over 60 volunteers who are working to support the employees and their families with medical assistance. “This includes the availability of beds, oxygen, diagnostics tests including RT-PCR, oxygen concentrators for those in need and ambulances for the employees and their families,” Sharma said. In addition to this, other measures such as unlimited leaves for COVID self-care or for family members, COVID insurance policy for employees have been implemented, he said. Most importantly, there is also a provision for COVID death cover which includes off-role employees as well, he said.

GAC and TOTAL celebrate one year in their partnership for a sustainable future DUBAI: G A C a n d To t a l S o l a r Distributed Generation (’Total Solar DG’) Middle East are celebrating a year since the solar project at GAC’s Dubai South contract logistics facility has been commissioned. Since then, it has generated 5 million kilowatt-hour (kWh) of renewable electricity, exceeding the forecast 4.2 million kWh and reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 2,000 tonnes or the equivalent of planting 35,000 trees. Following this first success, GAC and Total Solar DG have two other projects in the pipeline to be completed by the end of the year. The 2.7 megawatt-peak (MW) solar-powered rooftop and a viewing platform were installed 20 metres off the ground on GAC’s Dubai South contract logistics facility, one of the highest buildings in the area, near Al Maktoum International Airport. “At GAC, we seek to integrate sustainability with our business strategy and are continuously looking for ways to mitigate our impact on the environment,” says Neil McMaster, GAC Dubai’s General Manager – Contract Logistics. “This is more than just good intentions; we are taking multiple steps, from offsetting our paper use with tree planting to renewing our fleet and major solar projects. We want to conduct our business responsibly, creating long-term value for the company, our customers and the communities in which we operate in. The solar project has greatly reduced our carbon footprint and will continue to do so in the decades to come.” This is just one of several milestones in GAC and Total Solar

DG’s partnership. Following the success of the first installation, a second 2.60 MW project is in progress at the GAC Logistics Park in Jebel Ali Free Zone due to be completed in July. A third 2.87MW solar rooftop project for another site in Jebel Ali Free Zone is scheduled for completion in the later part of 2021. This partnership with Total Solar DG Middle East is helping to reduce GAC facilities carbon footprint to enable it to build a more sustainable future in Dubai. When completed, the three projects will result in a cumulative reduction of approximately 5,600 tonnes of CO2per year. The First COSCO SHIPPING “Piraeus-Sofia” Land-Sea Express Train launched

BEIJING: The first “Piraeus-Sofia” Land-Sea Express Train with 29 COSCO SHIPPING containers departed from the Piraeus Container Terminal in Greece at 4:00 p.m. local time on May 5 After running for more than 40 hours, the train arrived at Dragoman Station on the outskirts of Sofia, Bulgaria, at about 8:00 a.m. on May 7. Under conventional transportation, cargoes sent from the Port of Piraeus to Sofia usually need to be transported through a feeder liner to the Port of Thessaloniki in northern Greece before being further transferred by trucks to western Bulgaria via road transportation. With the launch of the “Piraeus-Sofia” Land-Sea Express Train, the cargo delivery period on this route is about six days shorter than the conventional route, which significantly improves logistics efficiency. The launch of the express train has filled the gap in the market of direct cargo delivery from Piraeus to western Bulgaria. Henceforth, the China-Europe L and-Sea Express Line has extended to Bulgaria, forming a loop of

sea-rail intermodal transport linking ten countries in Central and Eastern Europe. It is reported that the first “Piraeus-Sofia” Land-Sea Express Train is not only supported by major accounts like Hisense and Schenker but also favored by a large number of small and mediumsized customers. The China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line is a newly developed critical artery connecting Europe and Asia. It has realized land-sea intermodal transportation. After the containers arrive at the Port of Piraeus by sea, they can be immediately switched to railway transportation and delivered to Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe through the China-Europe LandSea Express Line. Currently covering ten countries in the hinterland of Central and Eastern Europe, it is the third trade corridor linking the Far East to Central and Eastern Europe, providing a quick and affordable logistics solution for more Chinese exports to the hinterland of Central and Eastern Europe.
