JNPT Centralized Parking Plaza stands Operational Key initiative to boost Direct Port Entry; helps save cost and time for Export Containers NAVI MUMBAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has opened a new Centralized Parking Plaza (CPP) for container tractor trailers with Customs facilitation, as part of its efforts to promote ease of doing business. The parking plaza spread across 45 hectares has a capacity to park 1,538 tractor trailers at a time. The plaza has been built exclusively to integrate the parking of tractor trailers carrying factory stuffed export containers at one location instead of multiple locations earlier. This will help integrate document processing by Customs with state-of-the art facilities and service provision. The plaza will be managed using Real Time Parking Management system and has a Wi Fi provision within the premises. It has a dormitory for truck drivers to stay, canteen for providing food to truck drivers, well-maintained toilets, area for vehicle repair and maintenance and commercial building.

The Centralized Parking Plaza will have guards and staff at each entry gate and entry lane to guide the tractor trailers to respective entry gates and lanes for entry formalities to ensure that at tractor trailers don’t have to wait in queue for entry. The CPP will also have MIS system where the details of the tractor trailers such as Name of driver, Contact Number, In timing, Truck No, Container No, Size of Container, Type (Dry/Hazardous/Reefer), Shipping Bill no, CHA Contact Number, Terminal will be recorded. Once the data entry is done at the entry gates, a parking number will be allotted to the tractor trailer based on its characteristics such as destination terminal, type of cargo, size of container etc. All information collected will be linked with parking number and a unique id with the date, time and stamp will be allotted and stored in the central server. Further, the tractor trailer in CPP will be guided to its parking location using variable messaging signs, other signages and will be moved to a parking bay near the inspection area. Once the Customs official inspects and clears the container, the tractor trailer will be allotted the

parking bay. When the Let Export Order (LEO) is issued, the tractor trailer is free to leave the CPP through the respective exit gates. “JNPT is the only port in India which has planned for a facility of this scale and CPP is a key initiative to streamline the traffic movement and improve the port efficiencies using IT services, at the same time provide convenience facilities and amenities at very nominal rates to truck drivers who travel long distances to reach the Port. The Centralized Parking Plaza is an important part of our constant endeavour to provide the ease of doing business within the Port,’’ Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT said during a visit to the plaza along with senior officials to oversee the functioning of the new facility.

The plaza system will ease the movement of container trucks on JNPT roads and will help respective terminals plan their tractor trailer movements in a better way. JNPT has appointed Nirmala Auto Care Centre for operation, management and Maintenance of Centralized Parking Plaza.

Logistics pioneer set to be Chairman of NITIE’s Board of Governors Allcargo Logistics and Gati Chairman Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty appointed as Chairman of the Society & Board of Governors of NITIE by the Ministry of Education, GoI MUMBAI: Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty, Chairman, Allcargo Logistics and Gati, has been appointed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, as the Chairman of the Society and Board of Governors (BoG) of the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), one of India's premium and only institution offering post graduate courses in Industrial Engineering. NITIE, located in a sprawling 63-acre campus at Powai, Mumbai, was established by the Government of India in 1963 with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the International Labour Organization (ILO) to create skilled professionals. National Logistics policy to be announced soon, says Special Secretary Logistics NEW DELHI: The National Logistics policy will soon be in place and provide a very robust framework for action to work on improvements in the logistics and supply chain management for the nation, a top official of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in an ASSOCHAM webinar recently. “In India, we had to devise our own formulations for the national logistics policy and therefore it has taken a little longer than what it should have taken, but I can assure you that we have reached the finality on this and I think you will soon see the final logistics policy in place,” said Shri Pawan Kumar Agar wal, Special Secretar y (Logistics), Department of Commerce and Industry. The logistics sector appears to be very-very complex. “Unless we get down to details and go down to specific commodities, geographies, modes of transport, concerns, we may just keep wandering without achieving much. This is precisely what we have been doing over the past 5-6 months,” Agarwal said. “We have had seven rounds of discussion and our attempt has been to zero down to specific areas of intervention rather than making some very general statements and not being able to do anything about it. We wish to create a plan that is implementable,” he said. “Under the plan we have identified 12 areas that are levers of change that we would focus on – policy coherence, regulatory coherence, use of automation and mechanisation of warehousing, standardization and unitization of cargo,

digital transformation, multi-modality, logistics infrastructure, professionalization of human resources, green & clean logistics and others,” he elaborated. Further stating that these aspects would be covered in the national logistics policy, Agarwal said, “I do Shri Pawan Kumar Agarwal hope that the policy is soon announced. We are not waiting for initiating action, in many areas we have already initiated action and are in different stages of implementation.” The focus is on ensuring that all this happens in a coordinated manner. “This coordination arrangement needs to be institutionalised as to how we bring in a more robust structure of coordination at the national level, state level and between states and the centre,” he explained. Noting that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are a very important sector for the economy, Agarwal said that streamlining of processes will help MSMEs reduce logistics cost to a great extent. Sharing his views, ASSOCHAM’s senior vice-president, Mr Vineet Agarwal said that there is a need to look at more incremental changes rather than very large interventions for the sector to improve in terms of policy and regulatory issues. “Besides, standardization and design innovation based on India-centric needs together with streamlining of processes would reduce time and logistics costs.”

India Post & US Postal Service (USPS) signs Agreement for Electronic Exchange of Customs Data The agreement aims to facilitate ‘ease of exports’ for small and large exporters through postal channels NEW DELHI: Department of Posts, Government of India (India Post) and United States Postal Service (USPS) have entered into an agreement for Electronic Exchange of Customs data related to postal shipments exchanged between the two countries. The agreement will make it possible to transmit and receive electronic data of international postal items prior to their physical arrival at the destination and would enable customs clearance of postal items in advance in line with the evolving global postal framework. This will also improve the performance of postal services in terms of reliability, visibility and security. USA is the top export destination for India (~17%) which is also reflected in exchange of goods through postal channel. In 2019, around 20% of outbound EMS and 30% of Letters & Small Packets transmitted by India Post were destined to USA whereas 60% of the Parcels received by India Post were originated from USA. Exchange of Electronic Advance Data (EAD) as per the Agreement will be a key driver towards promoting mutual trade with emphasis on the exports from different parts of India to USA through postal channel considering that USA is a major destination of MSME products, Gems & Jewellery, Pharmaceuticals and other local products from India. This will fulfill a major demand of export industry to expedite customs clearances of export items.

The primary objective that will be served by this agreement is to facilitate ‘ease of exports’ for small and large exporters through postal channels from different parts of the country and will contribute towards making India an Export Hub for the world. The agreement was signed by Mr. Prannoy Sharma, Deputy Director General (International Relations & Global Business), Department of Posts, Government of India and Mr. Robert H. Raines Jr., Managing Director, Global Business of United States Postal Service.

Engineering exporters worried over fresh wave of COVID-19 cases in Europe KOLKATA: Engineering exporters are concerned about the volume of exports this year due to the “worsening” COVID-19 situation in Europe which is among top three destinations of shipments of such products from India, an official said recently. The engineering exports of the country have dropped by 13.73 per cent in the April-September period in the current fiscal as compared to the corresponding months last year, EEPC India former chairman Rakesh Shah said. “The COVID-19 situation is worsening in the European Union (EU). We will be happy if this year’s exports touch last fiscal’s figure as the EU is among the top three destinations of engineering exports from India,” he said at a virtual press conference. Quantum of such exports from the country was at

USD 75.8 billion last year. “During the July-September period, the engineering exports saw a rise of 3.17 per cent, while the decline was 29.4 per cent in the first quarter,” he said. It is slowly reviving now but exporters are keeping their fingers crossed as “the COVID-19 situation in the EU is getting worse”, Shah said. Engineering exporters’ body EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai said the pandemic has disrupted the entire world, and exporters are among those who are suffering. According to EEPC India, around 25 per cent of the merchandise exports from the country consists of engineering products. The Engineering Export Promotion Council is holding a virtual event, ‘India Subcontracting Expo 2020’ for the first time for the overseas buyers.

Dr Rajesh Kumar Verma highlighted the measures taken by Customs Department for facilitating trade and commerce especially in the time of COVID-19, some of which are as following: • 24x7 custom clearance facility has been implemented at all custom formations to avoid any supply chain disruption. • Special care has been taken in clearance of passengers coming from affected countries. Separate channels were created at the airports, port terminals and land customs stations for such passengers. Customs officers strictly followed instructions to use masks, gloves and sanitizers. • A nodal officer has been designated in each customs zone of India who can be approached for any issue pertaining to clearance of cargo. Snowman Logistics reports Rs. 58 Cr Revenue in Q2 BANGALORE: Snowman Logistics Ltd recorded a Revenue of INR 57.69 Crores during the quarter ended September 30, 2020,against INR 58.38 Crores in Q2 FY19-20. EBITDA decreased to INR 15.19 Crores from INR 16.12 Crores in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. PBT decreased to INR. (1.73) Crores from INR. (1.29) Crores in the corresponding quarter of the previous year and PAT decreased to INR (1.73) Crores in the current quarter from INR (1.40) Crores in the same period in the previous year. Speaking about the quarter performance, Mr. Sunil Nair, CEO, Snowman Logistics Ltd said, “In spite of the business impact faced by our major set of customers, we have done fairly well and have been able to maintain a high warehouse occupancy rate during this year. This was possible due to the new business pipeline that we had maintained across various segments. Now we are seeing our customers’ businesses resuming to pre-lockdown levels. This should help us do better in the coming quarters as our existing business grows and the new volumes are retained. Further, we have almost

finished the construction of dedicated facility for Amazon in Kundli (near Delhi), and it should be functional from 1st of November. We are on track with respect to all these projects to be ready for operations in Q4 of this year. US Senators seek removal of high tariff on import of pecans from India WASHINGTON: A bipartisan group of five influential senators has urged the Trump administration to seek removal of high tariffs on import of pecans by India, asserting that it is impacting a large number of American farmers. The growing middle class in India has demonstrated its desire for consumeroriented agricultural products, like tree nuts, and the Indian market represents one of the most dynamic and fastest growing in the world, the senators wrote in a letter to US Trade Representatives Robert Lighthizer. "Unfortunately, the current high

tariff (36 per cent) that India charges on pecan imports makes it difficult for American producers to compete in this important market," said the letter that was written by Senators Kelly Loeffle, David Perdue, Doug Jones, John Boozman and Tom Cotton. China’s economic growth seen hitting 44-year low in 2020, bounce 8.4% in 2021 : Reuters Poll BEIJING: China’s economy is expected to grow at its weakest pace in over four decades even as it steadily recovers from a coronavirus-induced dive earlier this year, but overall output could rebound sharply in 2021, a Reuters poll showed. The world’s second-biggest economy is now expected to expand by 2.1% in 2020, according to the median of 37 analysts surveyed by Reuters, down slightly from the 2.2% growth projected in the last poll in July. That would make China the only major economy to grow in 2020, albeit at the slowest annual pace since 1976, the final year of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution.

China’s economic recovery accelerated in the third quarter as consumers shook off their coronavirus caution, although the weaker-than-expected headline growth highlighted some persistent risks including from resurgent COVID-19 cases globally and ongoing tensions with the United States over a range of issues. The poll forecast fourthquarter GDP to rise 5.8% year-on-year, quickening from 4.9% in July-September. Growth is projected to pick up to 8.4% in 2021, as the global economy is set to recover from the health crisis, according to the poll. “With exports strong and domestic consumption and investment both improving, Q4 could be one of the best quarters for overall growth in a few years,”

analysts at research fir m Gavekal Dragonomics said in a note. “Growth momentum should peak in the first half of 2021, though base effects will confuse the data readings.” The economy has been recovering steadily from a steep 6.8% slump in the first quarter, when it was jolted by the pandemic. But China faces long-term obstacles to maintain its ascent, analysts say. Its top leaders are holding a key meeting to chart the country’s economic course for 2021-2025, amid rising tensions with the United States on trade, technology and other fronts, threatening a decoupling of the world’s two largest economies.

Government decides to extend validity of licence for Tur import till Dec 31 NEW DELHI: The government recently said it has decided to extend the validity of licence for import of tur till December 31 this year. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a public notice said the cut-off date for ICLC (Irrevocable Commercial Letter of Credit)

for the import shall accordingly be December 1, 2020. It said eligible and verified applicants who have been issued licences will have to ensure that their import consignments of tur reach the Indian ports on or before December 31.

"It has now been decided to extend the validity of licence for import of tur from November 15, 2020, till December 31 this year," it added. The quota of four lakh tonne of tur was allocated equally, or for the quantity applied, whichever is lower, only among the eligible and verified applicants.

COVAXX & Maersk enter partnership to supply COVID-19 Vaccines Globally COPENHAGEN: COVAXX, a U.S. company developing a multitope synthetic peptide-based vaccine to fight COVID-19, has announced a global logistics partnership with Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping and integrated logistics providers. The agreement lays out a framework for all transportation and supply chain services that will be needed to deliver COVAXX’s vaccine candidate UB-612 around the world, once approved by regulatory authorities. Financial terms of the agreement are not disclosed. COVAXX is developing UB-612 using a high precision, synthetic peptide platform to activate both B-cell and T-cell arms. The investigational vaccine is designed to mimic natural biology and preclinical studies have shown high immunogenicity and levels of neutralizing titers against SARSCoV-2. The technology platform has been successful in commercializing blood diagnostics as well as safe and effective vaccines for infectious disease in animal health and has been tested in numerous clinical trials for other indications to date. COVAXX is currently conducting Phase 1 clinical trials of UB-612 in Taiwan and has an agreement with the

University of Nebraska Medical Center to conduct Phase 2 trials in the United States, upon regulatory approval. The company has advanced precommitments for over 100 million doses of UB-612 around the globe. In September, COVAXX announced an agreement with Dasa, the largest diagnostic medical company in Brazil to conduct a large-scale human efficacy clinical trial in Brazil. The mission of COVAXX is to defeat COVID-19 and ultimately democratize health worldwide. Maersk will help fulfill this mission by overseeing all logistics activities to ensure efficient transportation to developing countries. The agreement provides for end-to-end supply chain management, packing and shipping, via air or ocean, ground transportation, warehouse storage and distribution to facilities to support COVAXX’s requirements for a pharmaceutical grade, temperaturecontrolled supply chain. COVAXX is planning to manufacture 100 million doses of UB-612 during early 2021, and a billion doses by the end of 2021. The design of the vaccine components will allow for the use of existing cold-chain storage and distribution channels, as the COVAXX vaccine does not require additional infrastructure such as -80?C freezers or liquid nitrogen tanks to store materials at extreme temperatures. “The COVAXX vaccine is unique in that it can be stored in the

India to see positive economic growth in second half of 2020-21: Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar NEW DELHI: Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday exuded confidence that India’s economic growth would be in positive territory in the second half of this fiscal, and will do even better than a large part of the world in 2021-22. Speaking at CERAWeek India Energy For um, Kumar expressed concerns about the uncertainly over the pandemic, which has kept the economy sluggish. “We (our economic growth) would be slightly ahead in 2021-22. We would be better than large part of the world. But this depends on how the (relief from) pandemic pans out. This is pure uncertainty. How it will work?” he argued. Accepting that there may not be green shoots in the economy at present,

he said there are some stems that are very much visible like rising freight, power demand, farm production and other numbers. He admitted that the Indian economy would see a contraction in JulySeptember, but opined that the decline must be slow. There will be positive growth in the second half this fiscal, Kumar said. “I see much stronger recovery in the 2021-22. I am hoping so on solid grounds. We used 6-7 months (during the pandemic) for deep structural reforms like FDI norms, labour laws and farm sector”. The structural reforms will help India achieve positive growth in the second of this fiscal and improve further in the next fiscal, he said. “We should not be

de-motivated by our negative GDP growth. There are many measures (packages) in the pipeline,” he noted. Kumar also clarified that India’s move towards self-reliance does not mean isolation from the global economy. India wants level playing field for its entrepreneurs so that exports can be increased, he said. About facilitating global companies to reduce their production concentration in one country and invest in India to set up exportoriented manufacturing facilities, he informed that the government has already introduced production linked incentive scheme for such players. He cited the example of Apple, which is in the process to set up its manufacturing base in Pune.

Global FDI flows fell 49% in first half of 2020 due to COVID-19: UNCTAD GENEVA: Global foreign direct investment (FDI) flows fell 49% in the first half of 2020 compared to 2019 due to the economic fallout from COVID-19, new trade data from the UN said. UNCTAD’s latest Global Investment Trends Monitor released on Tuesday said that in the wake of the pandemic, lockdowns around the world slowed existing investment projects and the prospects of a deep recession led multinational enterprises to reassess new projects.

“The FDI decline is more drastic than we expected, particularly in developed economies. Developing economies weathered the storm relatively better for the first half of the year,” UNCTAD’s investment and enterprise director James Zhan said. “The outlook remains highly uncertain.” According to the report, developed economies saw the biggest fall, with FDI reaching an estimated USD 98 billion in the six-month period, declining 75 per cent as compared to 2019.

The trend was exacerbated by sharply negative inflows in European economies, mainly in the Netherlands and Switzerland. FDI flows to North America fell by 56 per cent to USD 68 billion. Meanwhile, the 16 per cent decrease in FDI flows to developing economies was less than expected, due mainly to investment in China. Flows decreased by just 12 per cent in Asia but were 28 per cent lower than in 2019 in Africa and 25 per cent lower in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Maiden call in Europe and world record on the largest shipping route between Asia and Europe T h e C M A C G M JA C Q U E S S A A D E , t h e l a r g e s t containership in the world with a capacity of 23,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent containers) and powered by LNG, has arrived in Malta, her first port of call in Europe. The CMA CGM Group’s flagship, which set a new world record when she left Singapore with a load of 20,723 full containers aboard, crossed the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal to reach the Mediterranean, and will shortly continue her journey to Northern Europe. The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE joined the Group’s fleet on September 22nd in a ceremony held in Shanghai and is currently making her maiden voyage on the Group’s iconic French Asia Line (FAL 1) connecting Asia to Europe. The line provides a weekly service comprising 13 calls over 84 days. LNG, a ground-breaking choice that aims to preserve air quality and an energy of the future In November 2017, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, made the ground-breaking decision to fit the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE and her 8 sister ships with an LNG-powered engine, a first in the shipping industry for vessels of their size. This decision demonstrated the CMA CGM Group’s resolve to champion the energy transition in the shipping sector.

LNG is currently the state-of-the-art industry solution for preserving air quality. It delivers a reduction of 99% in sulfur dioxide and fine particle emissions and of 85% in nitrogen oxide emissions, surpassing the requirements of current regulations. LNG also provides an initial response to the challenge of tackling climate change. An LNG-powered vessel also emits up to 20% less CO2 than fuel-powered systems. This technology is one of the initial ways in which the CMA CGM Group plans to meet its target of being carbon-neutral by 2050.

Packed full of innovations and the product of 7 years’ research and development by CMA CGM’s experts This innovative new class of ships, which measures 400 meters in length with a 61-meter overall beam and a height of 78 meters, is the product of 7 years’ research and development by CMA CGM’s experts. The new class features state-of-the-art technologies, such as path prediction, “smart eye” projection technologies, and augmented reality screens to assist the captain and crew. Built for performance, they come with a straight-shaped hull with an integrated bulb, redesigned propellers and rudder blades, along with the Becker Twisted Fin®, which improves performance by optimizing water flow and significantly reducing energy consumption. Thanks to this new system, the CMA CGM Group’s new vessels will deliver a 4% reduction in CO2 emissions. In parallel, the vessels will use a smart system to manage the ventilation of the refrigerated containers carried in the holds. Malta Freeport is a key hub for the main shipping routes and the Mediterranean for CMA CGM The Mediterranean is where the CMA CGM Group first operated after it was founded in 1978 by Jacques Saadé, with its first line serving the ports of Beirut, Latakia, Marseille and Livorno. In 1997, CMA CGM transferred its transshipment operations in the Mediterranean from Damietta (Egypt) to Malta, and in 2004, the Maltese Government granted CMA CGM a 35-year concession which was then extended to 65 years, to run the island’s container terminal. Strategically located at the crossroads between the Mediterranean and the major shipping routes, Malta Freeport represents a key platform for boosting the region’s influence on world trade. The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE’s call at Malta Freeport reflects the investments in the infrastructure of the container terminals. Since its privatization in 2004, this has amounted to over 350 million. The giant dock cranes installed at terminal 1 and the work undertaken to dredge the water to a depth of 17 meters have enabled Malta Freeport to join the elite European ports capable of accommodating vessels of this size, placing it at the forefront of environmental protection efforts.
