India starts exporting organic products to Germany BANGALURU: In a boost to exports of organic products, a consignment of 10.2 MT of value added products of organically certified gluten free jackfruit powder & retort packed jackfruit cubes were exported to Germany from Bengaluru via sea route. “From Bengaluru to Berlin: In a boost to export of organic products, a consignment of 10.2 MT of processed & organic certified jackfruit was exported from Bengaluru to Germany,” Trade Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted. The consignment has been processed in the pack house owned by Phalada Agro R e s e a r c h Fo u n d a t i o n s ( PA R F ) , Bengaluru. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) registered PARF
represents a group of 1500 farmers with a wide coverage of around 12,000 acres farms. These farmers grow medicinal and aromatic herbs, coconut, jackfruit, mango puree products, spices and coffee. Recently, a shipment of 1.2 MT of fresh jackfruit was exported from Tripura to London. Jackfruits were sourced from the Tripura based Krishi Sanyoga Agro Producer Company Ltd. The consignment was packed at APEDA assisted packhouse facility of Salt Range Supply Chain Solution Ltd and exported by Kiega EXIM Pvt Ltd. This was the first APEDA assisted pack house for exports to European Union, which was approved in May 2021. In 2020-21, India produced around 3.49 million tonne of certified organic products which includes all varieties of food
products namely oil seeds, sugarcane, cereals, millets, cotton, pulses, aromatic & medicinal plants, tea, coffee, fruits, spices, dry fruits, vegetables, processed foods etc. Madhya Pradesh has covered largest area under organic certification followed by Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh. In 2020-21, the total volume of organic products export was 8.88 lakh metric tonne and the export realization was around ₹7,078 crores or $1 billion. Bengaluru based PARF facilitates the certification process as per National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) standards to their small farmers groups. Processing unit of PARF has been certified by APEDA under its accredited Organic Certification.

Single commodity handling terminals seek policy interventions, says IPPTA NEW DELHI: The policy reforms of the government in promoting domestic coal availability and utilisation are directly impacting reduced import coal volumes and thereby survival of import coal handling terminals, the industry association said. Ragam Kishore, President, Indian Private Ports and Terminals Association (IPPTA) in a letter to Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said the policy intervention by MoPSW for survival of single cargo handling terminals is essential to maximize the capacity utilisation of port assets with increase in efficiencies which will also prevent the public assets from being converted to a non-performing PPP assets. “In the light of position, explained above, we request you to examine the issue and draw up revival plans of such Terminals in the overall interests of the country”, the letter said. “It is to be noted that various policy reforms of Coal, Power and Environment & Forest Ministries etc, in promoting domestic coal availability and utilisation, are directly impacting reduced import coal volumes and there by survival of import coal handling terminals is a great concern. So, if policy reforms in port sector do not happen to match the pace of policy reforms in other sectors they will generate Non-performing assets/ and lead to a spate of disputes”, the letter said. With the change in policies along with Covid-situation, the thermal/Steam coal traffic had reduced” significantly to the extent of 78 per cent in Kolkata Port, 43 per cent in Visakhapatnam Port, 30 per cent in New Mangalore Port, 26 per cent in Kamarajar Port etc and overall decline is to the extent of 15.4 per cent in all he major ports for FY21 compared to last year”, the letter said. Maersk supports imports and distribution of medical aid in India to fight the COVID-19 pandemic More than 6,000 oxygen concentrators, 500 oxygen cylinders, 60 cryogenic oxygen tanks, and several medical supplies and ventilators were transported into the country by A.P. Moller - Maersk through its ocean and air freight solutions for various institutions and corporates contributing to medical relief activities MUMBAI: A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk), an integrated container logistics company, is supporting the society fight the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India by facilitating the logistics and supply chain of medical relief. Maersk has offered its ocean transportation service to institutions and organisations participating in medical relief at a nominal rate of 1 USD per container. All air freight shipments to India facilitated by Maersk are being done on a zero-profit basis. When the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic hit India, the medical infrastructure came under a lot of pressure. An acute shortage of oxygen supply in hospitals led almost all the industrial oxygen manufacturing in the country to be diverted for medical purposes. However, the challenge of transporting the oxygen to medical facilities posed an even bigger roadblock due to a lack of cryogenic oxygen tanks that are required for transporting the medical oxygen. At this time, Maersk stepped in and through its network connected the sellers of such tanks and oxygen concentrators from around the world to the organisations that were willing to lease or buy them in India. This, in addition to the integrated logistics solutions offered by Maersk that range from air freight, ocean freight, landside transportation to customs clearances, warehousing and distribution and digital solutions proved to be vital in handling the complexity involved in the entire process of bringing the medial aid into India. “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us several lessons – empathy being one of the most important ones of them all. The crisis has urged us all to go beyond our business and support the society when it needs it the most. 15 of our top executives from different functions voluntarily got together in the early days of the second wave and put together ‘Project Oxygen War Room’, or POWR as they called it, to help society fight the virus”, said

MSC & SHELL discusses ways to help achieve a net-zero emissions shipping industry GENEVA: Shell, an integrated energy company and MSC are discussing ways to help achieve a net-zero emissions shipping industry. Here, Bud Darr, Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Group and Melissa Williams, Vice President for Marine, Sectors and Decarbonisation at Shell explore the different approaches the companies are taking and how the industry can best work together to take action. Melissa: Bud and I have had the opportunity to work together on several occasions during our time in the shipping industry. We’ve seen a few challenges, including the disruption to the global economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But decarbonisation is a fundamentally complex and long-term challenge for shipping, and we’re going to need to navigate some profound changes to overcome it. Bud: Very much so. Despite what has happened recently we continued to think carefully about getting our efforts right to decarbonise, and to progress these efforts. Melissa and I continue to collaborate and exchange views related to solutions around this. We share a passion for building a path to sustainable and decarbonised shipping. We’re conscious that everyone across the whole value chain must work together to find and deploy the right set of fuels and technologies that will help decarbonise the whole industry for the long-term future. And we must act today. Melissa: My Shell team is working closely with Bud and his colleagues at MSC on how we can take this action together. We did a similar thing when we were preparing for IMO 2020 – we worked together to ensure MSC had the fuels it needed, such as very low sulphur, and proactively trialled it with them on their vessels. Bud: As an example of our efforts to decarbonise, MSC has been pioneering the use of responsibly sourced biofuel blends, and we were pleased to have been able to work with Shell on that.
It’s a great start, and part of a much broader range of initiatives, but we agree that no single technology or solution holds all the answers. We are looking at all possible options, such as hydrogen derived fuels, which we believe show great potential for container vessels. We have also been exploring for several years the significant potential benefits of progressing from fossilbased LNG to bio-LNG or synthetic variants. The bottom line is: one size doesn’t fit all. There are up to 100,000 ships out there with various shapes, deployments, and sizes. They all need to decarbonise over time. Melissa: So we are going to need a range of new solutions – new technologies, new fuels – to pave the way to a low-carbon future for shipping. As an industry we need to co-create these solutions. Shell is focused on partnering with others to drive change. We want to lower the barriers to success on decarbonisation across the industry. Bud: Yes, we must look at what we collectively can do to continue exploring both new marine technologies and new fuels. We also need to keep pushing forward regarding energy efficiency efforts. This is critical, not only for the gains in emissions it can produce today with conventional fuels, but also for its value in improving both the cost and volume profiles of future fuels to make them a shipboard reality sooner. We see open discussions and trusted relationships – which we have with Shell as a key pillar to making all that happen. Melissa: We have to carry on the conversation and progress around the industry. It’s clear to all of us in the shipping industry that we have a long way to go and that it isn’t going to be as simple as just one company making a decision on how they’ll do it. Bud: For me, I see the work we did on biofuels as a great example. It allowed us to take firm steps and make real progress. I look forward to continuing the dialogue with Shell.

HMM and five Korean partners launch consortium to explore green ammonia supply chain • HMM has signed MoU with five Korean partners to conduct a study, aiming to establish • comprehensive supply chain for green ammonia from produc on to bunkering • HMM will con nue its efforts on a pathway to decarbonisa on based on collabora ve work with compe ve industrial players SEOUL: HMM has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LOTTE Fine Chemical, Lotte Global Logistics, POSCO, Korean Register (KR), and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) to seek feasible solutions on the green ammonia supply chain. Under the terms of the MoU, each member pledged joint efforts to form the end-to-end supply chain for ammonia bunkering, including production, storage, and transportation of green ammonia. More specifically, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) plans to develop an ammonia-powered ship, which will be certified by Korean Register (KR). HMM and Lotte Global Logistics take charge of testing and operating the vessel. Once POSCO produces green ammonia overseas,
LOTTE Fine Chemical will transport the fuel and perform a bunkering operation. As an environmental initiative, in 2019, HMM unveiled its target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 for its entire fleet. As part of achieving the target, HMM has been seeking multiple sustainable energy sources, including biofuels, LNG, hydrogen, and green ammonia. An HMM official said, “We simply can’t decide and select one single carbon-neutral fuel at this moment, considering commercial viability, availability, and scalability. HMM will spearhead an effort to promote the use of a range of alternative fuels in cooperation with top-rated industrial players with experience and expertise.”

Single commodity handling terminals seek policy interventions, says IPPTA Cont’d. from Pg. 3 The situation of decline in import coal volumes will further worsen in near future and the same was acknowledged in Maritime India Vision 2030, which mentioned clearly the outline of reduction in import coal due to government focused initiatives on auction of coal mines and increase in renewable energy/alternative fuels etc. “As a part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, Government is formulating various policy reforms towards pro motio n of incre ased
availability/use of domestic coal supplies to curb the import coal to minimize foreign exchange outflows which will also improve the GDP of the country. Though it is a welcome move in the interest of the Nation, the import coal-based terminals are severely affected due to low coal imports and complete uncertainty about future volumes. Business survival is at stake also impacting severely on Concessioning Authority’s revenue share from concessionaire”, the letter said.
The industry said there are major problems being faced by single commodity handling terminals in India requiring urgent policy interventions. Some of the PPP concessions at the major ports allow the Operators to handle only one commodity such as coal, iron ore etc. The structure of PPP at major ports is such that the traffic risk for the project is being borne by the concessionaire, whereas Concessioning Authority is securing their revenue through minimum guaranteed cargo mechanism.
DGFT services on trader code, Aadhaar link to remain suspended from June 1-6 NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday said that services of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade such as application for a new importerexporter code (IEC), modification applications and one-time linking of Aadhaar for e-sign purposes will not be available from June 1-6 due to nonavailability of PAN Validation Services. “In reference to the Press release by
Central Board of Direct Taxes on “Launch of new e-filing Portal of the I n c o m e Ta x D e p a r t m e n t - N o n availability of e-filing services from June 1-6, 2021”, it is informed that some DGFT services wherein CBDT PAN validation services are being consumed in the DGFT IT systems will get impacted during this period,” DGFT said in a statement.
The services include application for a new IEC, application for amendments/modification in an IEC, and one-time linking of Aadhaar for esign purposes. DGFT said that in case of any queries/ issues, exporters, importers and other members of trade may contact DGFT Helpdesk at 1800- 111-550 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Saturday.
India's Exports ride with US economic recovery despite Covid NEW DELHI: A handsome fiscal stimulus package in the US leading to its economic revival along with the containment of Covid 19 pandemic in Europe have given the much-required push to the Indian exports sector amid a severe Covid 19 second wave. The US GDP rose by 6.4 per cent in the first three months of this year. Besides, several countries that have been dependent on China for imports of goods are now actively looking to diversify their markets. While India's exports in April almost trebled against the corresponding month in the previous year aided by a low base effect in the previous year, analysts said that there has been a significant rise in orders reflecting a "real recovery." US President Joe Biden just carved out a fiscal stimulus package of $2 trillion. P rior to that for mer US President Donald Trump had also injected a fiscal stimulus to boost the economy.
The US is one of India's largest trading partners. For exporters, while booking orders are in-tact the profit margins have dipped a little. Sources also said that there can be some hiccups in supply in the coming months as a few states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are still in the grip of the pandemic. "Profitability has taken a hit due to subdued prices for many goods. To ensure that it does not impact the exporters, it is important that they focus on volumes," Ajay Sahai director general and chief executive of Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO) told India Narrative. "As of now export orders have not been dented. There has been no cause for worry as order booking has remained robust. Going ahead there could be some supply issues as a few states are still to peak but overall things are looking up with the US and Europe
coming out of the Covid 19 pandemic," Sahai added. Engineering goods, gems and jewellery, pharmaceuticals among others are the main items that have been exported. India's rice exports have also shown a huge jump. DK Srivastava, EY's chief policy adviser said that with vaccination drive picking up, India has "sufficient time" to make up for the lost ground. Meanwhile, the overall number of new Covid infections have been on the decline which has come as a huge relief to policymakers amid a 10 per cent rise in foreign direct investments (FDI) inflows into the country during 2020-21. Total FDI was recorded at a record $81.72 billion in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20. "The fact that FDI inflow has increased to this level goes on to show that the fundamentals of the economy have not been shaken despite the pandemic," another analyst said.
Truck rentals drop by 5-7% as lockdowns hit production MUMBAI:- The slump in factory output due to lockdowns in states has resulted in decline in truck rentals on key trunk routes by 5-7 per cent in the past 15 days, according to the freight rate data released by Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT). The New Delhi-based think-tank further said that truck rentals could
have fallen more had the arrival of summer fruits, vegetables, wheat and other crops in APMC mandis not gone up by 10-15 per cent. The IFTRT said due to a steep drop in cargo offerings and lockdown of businesses, factories, particularly that of MSMEs in most of the states, the demand for new vehicles for replacement by fleet owners has

Railways maintain Double digit growth in Freight Traffic inspite of Covid challenges NEW DELHI: Showing an extra ordinary resilience against the Covid, Indian Railways has witnessed the DOUBLE DIGIT growth in Freight Traffic. Freight figures continue to maintain the high momentum in terms of earnings and loading in the month of May 2021 for Indian Railways. Railways recorded more than 10% increase in Freight loading as compared to normal year of 2019-20. In FY 2021-22, Indian Railways total loading is 203.88 Million Tonnes (MT) which is 10% more than FY 2019-20 loading figures (184.88 MT) for the same period. On mission mode, Indian Railways' Freight loading for the month of May 2021 is 92.29 MT which is 10% more than May 2019 (83.84 MT) and 43% more than May 2020 (64.61 MT) for the same period.
The important items transported during May 2021 includes 97.06 million tonnes of Coal, 27.14 million tonnes of Iron Ore, 7.89 million tonnes of Foodgrains, 5.34 million tonnes of Fertilizers, 6.09 million tonnes of Mineral Oil, 11.11 million tonnes of Cement (excluding clinker) and 8.2 million tonnes of Clinker. In the month of May 2021, Indian Railways earned Rs. 9278.95 crores from freight loading. Wagon Turn around time has seen an improvement of 27% in this month. In May, 2021, wagon turn around time is registered at 4.83 days as compared to 6.61 in May 2019. It is worth mentioning that a number of concessions/ discounts are also being given in Indian Railways to make Railways Freight movement
very attractive. It may be noted that speed of freight trains has been enhanced in the existing network. Freight speed Improvement leads saving of costs for all stake holders. Freight speed has doubled over last 18 months. Few zones (around six zones) have registered average speed of freight trains even above 50 Kmph. Due to geographical conditions, certain sections offer good speed to freight trains. An average speed of 45.42 Kmph is registered in May 2021 for freight trains which is 23% more as compared to 36.84 Kmph for the same period. Covid 19 has been used by Indian Railways as an opportunity to improve all round efficiencies and performances.
VOC Ports in pact with IIT-Madras arm for Vessel Traffic Development TUTICORIN: VO Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOC Port Trust), Tuticorin, on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Te c h n o l o g y C e n t r e f o r P o r t s Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC), IIT Madras, for Operation, Manning and Maintenance of Vessel Traffic System & Development of Indigenous Vessel Traffic Software (VTS) at VOC Port Trust. VTS is mandatory under IMO Convention ‘SOLAS’ (Safety of Life at Sea). The VTS traffic image is compiled and collected by means of advanced sensors such as radar, AIS, direction finding devices, CCTV and VHF or other co-operative systems and services. A modern VTS integrates all the infor mation into a single operator working environment for ease of use and in order to allow for
effective Maritime traffic organization and communication. The MoU was signed on behalf of VOC Port Trust by Pravin K. Singh, Deputy Conservator, VOC Port Trust, and on behalf of NTCPWC by K Murali, Professor In-charge, NTCPWC, in the presence of TK Ramachandran, Chairman, VOC Port Trust and Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT, Madras. The duration of the MoU for maintenance and updating of the entire system shall be for a period of five years, extendable by another five years, says a press release from VOC Port Trust. NTCPWC would maintain the existing Vessel Traffic Service, develop indigenous Vessel Traffic System software for VOC Port, that would facilitate identification, tracking, analysis of shipping traffic, real-time
information for Pilots, monitoring of meteorological warnings, and integration of existing Automatic Identification System (AIS). In addition, NTCPWC will also carry out assessment of the existing VTS functionalities, hardware, software, identify suitable upgrade and provide technical proposal to VOC Port for the VTS system upgrade and maintenance. The present VTS is operational for more than seven years and with the increase in maritime traffic, and advent of technological developments that have taken place globally in a rapidly changing maritime domain, the need for a more effective system offering higher levels of safety and throughput was felt, and accordingly, the Port has proposed to upgrade the existing VTS system and develop an indigenous VTS System, the release said.
Maintain RoDTEP rates to at least 5% for zinc, lead exports: ILZDA to Govt NEW DELHI: The India Lead Zinc Development Association (ILZDA) has made a plea to the government to maintain the rate under RoDTEP — a scheme to ensure exporters receive refunds on embedded taxes and duties previously non-recoverable — to at least 5 per cent for zinc and lead exports. ILZDA, a non-profit, noncommercial organisation dedicated to market development and dissemination of technical information in respect of lead, zinc and their downstream applications, further said that maintaining the RoDTEP rate to at least 5 per cent for zinc and lead exports would give adequate support to the
domestic industry to price its products competitively in the global market. RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products) scheme allows exporters to receive refunds on taxes and duties that are not exempted or refunded under any other scheme. Last year, the government approved the RoDTEP scheme for reimbursement of taxes and duties to exporters, with a view to give a boost to the country’s outbound shipments. The scheme was implemented for all goods, with effect from January 1. “Zinc and lead industry is facing a tax and duty incidence of about 17 to 24 per cent on its FOB value…Therefore we appeal to you for your intervention to
maintain the RoDTEP rates to at least 5 per cent for zinc and lead exports,” ILZDA said in a recent letter to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Fo r t h e l a s t f e w m o n t h s , t h e domestic demand for zinc has been somewhat depressed due to reduced fund inflows into infrastr ucture, declined automobile production etc, the letter said. The zinc industry has been “compelled to export as much zinc as possible. I also wish to inform you that the India-Korea CEPA has resulted in cheaper imports of zinc to India, taking advantage of zero duty. Thus the Indian industry has to export zinc to the global market”, it said.

CBIC extends eligibility of AEO to facilitate Exporters NEW DELHI : The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has further eased compliance measures for exporters by extending the validity of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) giving them more time to renew their accreditation. Accordingly, in its latest circular, CBIC has extended the validity of all AEO certificates expired or expiring between April 1 and May 31, 2021 to June 30. The extension will not be eligible for the cases where the entity has been found ineligible for continuation under the AEO Programme. The board has received representations by the field formations regarding the difficulties being faced by the AEO
entities in renewing their existing certification owing to various degrees of restrictions/lockdown in different parts of the country due to COVID pandemic, the CBIC said in its circular extending the AEO validity. AEO is a programme under the aegis of the World Customs Organization (WCO) SAFE Framework of Standards to secure and facilitate global trade. The programme aims to enhance international supply chain security and facilitate movement of legitimate goods. Under this programme, an entity engaged in international trade is approved by Customs as compliant with supply chain security standards and granted AEO status and certain benefits.
Hapag-Lloyd Further Expands Its Container Fleet: 60,000 TEU Of Standard Containers Ordered HAMBURG: The sharp increase in demand has led to a shortage of containers across the world. Severe imbalances – such as with exports from Asia, but also owing to congestion in ports and delays in hinterland transports – are causing containers to be tied up in transit for considerably longer periods of time. More boxes are currently needed overall to manage the same transport volume. For this reason, Hapag-Lloyd has once again invested in its container fleet and ordered an additional 60,000 TEU of standard containers from China. The first boxes will supplement those currently being produced and are scheduled to be delivered to Hapag-Lloyd as early as July and integrated into the existing fleet. The majority will be subsequently delivered in the third quarter. “Demand continues to be very high, and the supply of container equipment is currently one of our industry’s biggest challenges and demands our full attention. To counteract the
container shortage – but, most importantly, to offer our customers a better service – we have repeatedly invested in our container fleet since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. In April of this year, Hapag-Lloyd had already announced orders for a total of around 150,000 TEU of standard and reefer containers to be delivered over the course of 2021. The company had also invested in its container fleet at the beginning of the pandemic.

The Port of Antwerp: A catalyst for the EU-India strategic partnership

Cont’d. from Pg. 3 The Port thus becomes an exceptionally reliable supply chain partner, especially with the concept of an unbroken cold chain gaining prime importance in case of vaccines and other temperature sensitive pharmaceutical products. As India continues to grapple with the requirement of medical grade oxygen, another possibility emerges for Antwerp Port to contribute. Recently, Germany’s Linde delivered liquid oxygen in tank containers by air freight to India. This can also be brought by container ships to India and further, to meet present and future demand, the Port could be a hub for components to set up oxygen production facilities. In handling such type of project cargo, the Port is second to none! Some very impressive huge project cargo movements have already taken place via to Port between this India-Europe corridor, be it parts for the HMEL refinery in Bathinda or dismantling a factory in France to set it up in Bangalore or metro rail parts for Hyderabad secured by L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited from Tata Corus in France. Creating a momentum for bilateral trade relations Antwerp Port already plays a highly active role in trade facilitation via regular efforts to bring together stakeholders and players in addressing long-standing market access issues. Perishable’s trade, and in particular sea food trade, is one commodity that comes to mind where non-tariff entry barriers exist for Indian exports to the European market. Development of sea food trade is an area of interest because India not only has production capacity but also export capability. Europe on the other hand has significant import appetite and presents an exciting market opportunity. Realizing this, awareness raising sessions have been organized by the Port of Antwerp in partnership with the Indian Embassy in Belgium, Luxembourg & Europe, and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) on “Strengthening the India-EU sea food trade”. Efforts have gone a long way in acquainting the Indian exporters on regulations and standards expected for the European market, thereby generating momentum for developing trade across the corridor. Decarbonizing industry, transport, accelerating the implementation of the new circular economy and resource efficiency partnership To achieve a diminishing carbon footprint, one needs a vision and an action plan. The Port did this well by embedding energy transition as one of its 3 strategic priorities. It has further undertaken several projects in realizing long term aspirations of sustainability in energy usage, shipping, and industry development within its premise. The NextGen District, a dedicated parcel of land, that has been set up and is inviting applications from international companies with a focus on circular economy and green energy is a classic example. The new international consortium, PIONEERS, involving 46 partners (including port companies, terminal operators, transporters, and government agencies) and with the goal of making Europe’s ports greener is another example. With India embracing the Port led industrialization model which brings together ports, shipping and industry, there remains tremendous scope in contributing to the sustainable development plans of existing and upcoming Indian ports. Already via the Port’s continually active consultancy arm, Port of Antwerp International (PAI), scoping studies on terminal efficiency, usage of inland waterways for cargo movement and port logistics projects in India have been executed.
Connectivity between the EU and India and with third countries and regions (including Africa, Central Asia, and the Indo-Pacific). As India and Europe seek alternate corridors with third regions, parallel to the ambitious One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, Antwerp Port’s strong pre-existing connections with Africa can come in to play. The Port through its subsidiary Port of Antwerp International (PAI), has demonstrated its seriousness in cementing strong ties with Africa by collaborating closely with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), which manages six ports in Nigeria, and the port of Cotonou in Benin. PAI has supported the Port of Cotonou in modernizing its facilities and its expansion plans. Additionally, the regular sailings between Antwerp Port and African destinations, positions Antwerp as a reliable stocking option of goods destined for volatile markets like Africa. All in all, this pre-existing corridor can absolutely be leveraged. PAI collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to intensify presence in Western Africa The private sector on both sides is not only excited about the outcomes of this dialogue but also perceives the Port of Antwerp as a crucial player. The Deputy Director General of Business Europe, one of the coorganizers of the “EU-India Business Roundtable”, Ms. Luisa Santos quoted, "The relaunch of the trade negotiations during the EU-India Summit on 8 May is an essential step forward for both economies, as there is a huge untapped potential. The EU is India’s largest trading partner with Luisa Santos, about 11 percent of its total trade, worth Deputy Director General, around 80 billion, and the EU is India’s Business Europe top foreign investor. Nevertheless, European companies face, for example, high tariffs for certain goods such as cars and spirits. The Antwerp Port, as one of Europe's leading economic actors, will also contribute to reach this potential as a crucial link supporting India-Europe trade. Both sides should use this window of opportunity, based on our shared values, commitment to rules-based multilateralism, and benefit from mutual economic opportunities. We hope this positive momentum will be maintained and that the level of ambition will remain high throughout the negotiations." Previously engaged in a joint venture with Antwerp Port, Mr. Rajiv Agarwal- CEO and MD of Essar Ports stated, “The India - EU strategic partnership meet is a key event to auger partnership towards sustainable and resilient economic growth especially in changing times.
