MSC celebrates its 25th Anniversary in Asia G E N E VA : 2 0 2 1 m a r k s t h e 25th anniversary for MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s business in Asia. MSC set up its first office in the region in Singapore in April 1996, and today, it has over 50 offices in 10 markets: Singapore, Greater China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Myanmar, and is represented by a third-party agent in the Philippines. MSC started its operations in Asia back then by cooperating with Hyundai Merchant Marine and Norasia Line respectively to offer the AEX (Asia-Europe Express) and the AME (Asia-Mediterranean-Europe) services. In a few years’ time, the company started to run services independently from Asia to the different regions, and MSC now has a comprehensive network of over 50 services connecting the countries above to the rest of the world and intra-regionally. Committed to business in Asia MSC has a number of strategic port and logistics-related investments in China and southeast Asia. These include the Ningbo Gangji Terminal in China, which was officially opened in December 2004, and the MSC-PSA Asia Terminal (MPAT) in Singapore, which started operations in March 2006. The Ningbo Gangji Terminal, MSC’s hub port for China with direct services from Asia to other continents, is strategically located in the middle of China’s coastline and is well connected to the economic areas of Yangtze River Valley. In Singapore, the MPAT has grown from three to seven berths, making it the largest JV terminal in the country currently. MSC maintains its firm commitment to enabling trade to and from the region. Despite the high volatility and huge swings in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, MSC has kept a close eye on the market and has been nimbly adjusting its service network, including launching new services, to cater to new growth opportunities. MSC has newly launched a Sentosa service in April, which connects South East Asia and China to the
U.S. West Coast, and will start another new service in May from Asia to U.S. East Coast. Besides shipping ser vices, MSC has been been continuously launching new offerings to customers such as more intermodal services, MSC cargo insurance, smart containers, and launching new features on its eBusiness platform, myMSC. Last July, MSC launched the instant quote feature on myMSC. Since mid-2020, MSC has also been partnering customers on trial usage of electronic bills of lading in countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. “Asia remains a huge and important market for MSC and I am confident about the future of trade for the region. Major Ports waive-off all charges for ships carrying oxygen and oxygen related equipment cargo NEW DELHI: In view of the excessive requirement of Oxygen and related equipment in the country, the Government of India has directed all Major Ports, including the Kamarajar Port Limited, to waive-off all charges levied by Major Port Tr usts (including vessel related charges, storage charges etc.) and accord highest priority in the berthing sequence to the vessels carrying consignments of ; • Medical Grade Oxygen, • Oxygen Tanks, • Oxygen Bottles, • Portable Oxygen Generators, • Oxygen Concentrators,
• Steel Pipes for manufacturing Oxygen Cylinders and associated equipment for the next 3 months, or until further orders. Port Chairpersons have been asked to personally super vise logistic operations to ensure unhindered movement of such consignments for berthing of such vessel on top priority in the port, unloading of oxygen related cargo, coordination with Customs and other authorities for speedy clearance/documentation and expeditious evacuation of oxygen related cargo from port. In case the vessel is carrying other cargo/containers in addition to above
said oxygen related cargo, waiver of charges on pro-rata basis, considering the overall cargo or containers handled at port, should be provided for oxygen related cargo to such vessels. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will monitor the details of such vessels, cargo and time taken in the port from the time vessel entered in the port limits to exit of cargo from port gate. Government of India is deeply engaged in handling the crisis related to the second wave of COVID-19 in the country and taking all steps to counter the situation through appropriate and innovative measures.
CBIC to handhold Trade & Industry to expedite Customs Clearance of Imports related to COVID including Oxygen NEW DELHI: Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has set up dedicated helpdesk to handle queries related to Covid related Imports and handhold the trade, industry and individuals for expeditious customs clearance. As you are aware, the Government of India is committed to ensure seamless and quick customs clearance of COVID related imports, so that it reaches the users/beneficiaries in time. Queries and requests are being received by the Department from various quarters. These relate to availability of duty exemption benefits, to clearance procedures, registration requirements from various ministries etc. In order to streamline this process
and cater to all the queries and grievances of the trade, a dedicated cell I has been set up by the CBIC. To handhold the trade relating to clearances, an online form has been created under this URL (https://t.co/IAOQenWwO2) to seek details in a structured format and redress the grievances,at the earliest. DGFT operationalizes ‘COVID-19 Helpdesk' for International Trade related issues NEW DELHI: Department of Commerce, Government of India and Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) have undertaken to monitor the status of exports and imports, and difficulties being faced by trade stakeholders in view of the surge of COVID-19 cases. DGFT has accordingly operationalised a ‘COVID-19 Helpdesk' to support and seek suitable resolutions to issues arising in respect of International Trade. Deendayal Port Trust gives priority berthing to Ship carrying oxygen and related equipment GANDHIDHAM: Deendayal Port Trust is giving priority berthing to ships calling at the port for unloading oxygen and oxygenrelated equipment to deal with the rising demand for oxygen supplies in the country. A cargo ship ‘MV Hai Nam 86’ arriving from Hazira Port berthed at cargo jetty 13 at Deendayal Port Trust carrying 4,722.82 million tonnes (mt) of steel pipes, 1,389.468 mt of steel bars, 892.326 mt of jumbo bags and 170.535 mt project cargo. The c a r g o i s c u r r e n t l y b e i n g
unloaded from the ship. “Due to shortage of oxygen cylinders in the country for Covid-19 patients, concerted and urgent efforts were taken by Shri S K Mehta, Chairman, DPT to give priority berthing to the vessel on arrival at cargo jetty 13,” a spokesman for DPT said. DPT’s move follows a direction from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways recently to waive all charges levied by the Major Port Tr usts, including vessel related charges and storage charges, and to accord highest priority in berthing sequence to ships carrying consignments of medical grade oxygen, oxygen tanks, oxygen
bottles, portable oxygen generators, oxygen concentrators, steel pipes for manufacturing cylinders, and associated equipment, till July 25 or until further orders. The Ministry also asked the Port Chairmen to personally supervise logistics operations (including berthing of such vessels on top priority in the port, unloading of oxygen related cargo, coordination with Customs/other authorities for speedy clearance/ documentation and expeditious evacuation of oxygen related cargo from the port) to ensure unhindered movement of such consignments.
Transporter body offers free logistics support, warehouse for oxygen cylinders NEW DELHI: All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the truckers transport union, has offered to provide trucks for moving oxygen free of cost to various places in the country, Bal Malkit Singh, Chair man of Core Committee, AIMTC, was quoted as saying recently. It has already started doing so in a few cities in Maharashtra like Mumbai, Nashik and Nagpur. In Nashik, AIMTC has set aside 200 trucks to move oxygen cylinders – from depots to smaller hospitals in the local a r e a s , S a c h i n J a d h a v, D i s t r i c t President from AIMTC told. This will take care of the last mile delivery. Large volumes of oxygen were delivered to the depots in Nashik by trains, from where large tankers can directly go to
hospitals, but smaller hospitals require smaller cylinders, explained Jadhav. Delhi, which had approached Indian Railways to get oxygen for the state, was trying to arrange oxygen trucks, it is understood. In its proposal, Delhi had asked railways to load Liquid Medical Oxygen from nine locations, of which Railways has found seven locations feasible. Railways had asked Railways to arrange tankers and place an indent with Railways. For quicker transportation, empty oxygen tankers from Hyderabad were airlifted to Odisha. AIMTC is trying its best to maintain supply chain of oxygen round the clock by deploying drivers and stand by drivers across the country to ensure optimum usage of existing
fleet by road, rail and air, said Singh. India has 1000 such tankers in the country. Nitrogen tankers have been converted to oxygen tankers (a process quicker than procuring tankers) to increase overall capacity, said Singh. These tankers are expensive and take time as the manufacturers have to fabricate. Each of these costs about Rs 65-70 lakh, he said. Storage and transportation of oxygen is becoming a challenge. “The delay in transportation of oxygen to dealers, conversion into cylinders and supply to hospitals can get longer if a tiny link the supply chain falters,” said Singh. Technical knowledge is essential to prevent handle the cargo and to prevent mishandling and wastage of precious oxygen.
Global Steel Outlook Buoyant says World Steel Association; India stands to gain NEW DELHI: The Indian steel industry like its global counterparts belongs to one of those core industries that along with cement, renewable energy, coal and petro-chemicals is looking forward for a steady growth in 2021 onwards. In this context, the short range outlook for steel by World Steel Association (WSA) indicates a 6.1% growth of global steel demand at 1,874 MT, with china topping the list as usual with a predicted level of 1024.9 MT of steel consumption (54.6% share of global demand), at 3.0% growth over 2020, followed by India clocking growth at 19.8% of steel consumption at 106.1 MT in 2021. The US is slated to consume about 86.5 MT of steel with a growth rate of 8.1%. All other major steel producing countries have been projected to consume more steel in 2021. Japan with 56.0 MT, South Korea with 51.5 MT, Russia with 43.8 MT, Germany with 34.0
MT and Turkey with 35.0 MT are some of the top-ranking steel consuming countries. It is interesting to note that developed countries, where steel consumption was set to reach a near plateau level, would together demand 8.2% more steel in 2021, while emerging economies excluding China is likely to clock a growth of 10.2% in steel demand. The CIS, Central and South America and Africa would have a comparatively slower growth of 6.8%. The traditional demand driving sector for steel continues to be construction, which with the help of real estate construction and infra stimulus that have been announced by almost all the countries to prop up their economies immediately after the pandemic, would play a stellar role in strengthening steel demand. The demand for logistic-related facilities to support e-commerce, along with green recovery programmes and infra
renewals, would play their part. Steel exports by India reached a record level of 17.4 MT in FY21 (including 6.6 MT of semis) which exceeds last year’s level by as high as 55.5%. Vietnam has received maximum Indian steel exports, followed by China (semis export), Italy, the UAE and Nepal. India has become a net exporter by a big margin as total steel imports at 5.04 MT is 29.6% lower compared to last year. India has imported maximum from South Korea, China, Japan and Taiwan. Large volume of HRC imports from South Korea was undertaken to feed the Korean service sectors’ demand. These imports are expected to be replaced by domestic supply. Total imports valued at Rs 63,038.9 crore in FY21 was much lower compared to the export proceeds (all items inclusive) earned by the country at Rs 91,545.5 crore.

Plug and Play launches Maritime Innovation Platform in Antwerp Open Innova on enables tech that will shape the future of Mari me ANTWERP: Global innovation platform, Plug and Play, together with Founding Partners City of Antwerp, CMB, DXC Technology, Euronav, and Port of Antwerp, has announced the launch of their first maritime program in Antwerp, Belgium. The purpose of the program is to connect international startups with the Founding Partners to pilot their technologies and drive the future of maritime as world-class leaders of R&D and innovation. Startup collaboration at the local and global level Led by a local team of four people, Plug and Play Maritime aims to strengthen an innovative startup ecosystem centered around the seafaring sector, that brings new technologies and entrepreneurs to the region and enables technological and business development. Plug and Play Maritime will be situated at the pre-campus of Maritime Campus Antwerp. The launch event, which will mark the start of the first program batch, is planned for June 2021. “The launching of our first maritime platform in Antwerp represents the beginning of a new ‘voyage‘ for us at Plug and Play. We are eager to support our founding partners and the existing local innovation community through our global ecosystem, by means of impactful startup-corporate collaboration,” says Saeed Amidi, Founder and CEO of Plug and Play. “With Plug and Play, the City of Antwerp and Port of Antwerp strengthen their position as innovation leaders in the international maritime business. The city wants to be part of the European top of scale-up cities by 2025. We take a lot of initiatives in our growth clusters: digital and circular economy. The City and the Port work closely together in the digital innovation hub The Beacon. With Plug and Play this collaboration gets a new dimension. We are confident that thanks to this new initiative, Plug and Play Maritime, we will be able to accelerate our joined ambitions,” shares Claude Marinower, Vice-Mayor for Economy, Industry and Innovation, City of Antwerp. Open Innovation enables tech that will shape the future of Maritime Antwerp, home to the second largest port in Europe, is a hub for the maritime industry with a longstanding tradition. With its headquarters in Silicon Valley, Plug and Play’s expansion into this sector will provide an opportunity for the five Founding Partners to increase their innovation activities with access to a network of over 30,000 global startups. Initial technology areas for scouting will include clean fuels and energy, big data and Internet of Things, future logistics, efficient shipping, autonomous vessels, sensors, and more. By providing innovation-as-a-service, this platform will also play a strategic role for the partners in pioneering a sustainable maritime industry of the future throughout Belgium and around the world. Further offerings for startups, partners, and the growing ecosystem include business development, dealflows, workshops, weekly mentorship sessions, networking between partners, investment opportunities, and a series of monthly events including, Selection Days, Innovation Days and EXPO Days. Plug and Play Maritime will run local operations from the pre-campus of Maritime Campus Antwerp, a co-working space for startups to utilize and scale their business. “For the moment we have world class ports like the Port of Antwerp and a world class maritime industry in our country. Plug and Play Maritime offers a wide range of services to entrepreneurs The basis of Plug and Play Maritime will be the 12-week open innovation program, run twice a year. Each program welcomes 20+ selected international startups that are addressing the specific technological needs of the Founding Partners. The startups and business units of the partners will work together on pilots and proof of concepts, leading towards production-ready implementations. The goal is to have at least one joint project completed for each startup, to be showcased at EXPO Day, the final event at the end of each program.
