JNPT, a Major Contributor to India’s Growth Story ...Marks 31st Anniversary Today NAVI MUMBAI: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s Premier Container Port has been continuously evolving and upgrading to improve operational efficiency parameters. The port’s continuous growth and expansion has helped JNPT to perform its duties of a strategic contributor to nation building. MUMBAI: Impacted by COVID-19, major ports in India witnessed a steep 21 per cent volume contraction in April and bulk cargo throughput may shrink up to 8 per cent in the current fiscal, ratings agency Icra said. It said the container segment may witness a decline of 12-15 per cent during the current financial year. “The Indian port sector has been adversely impacted due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent lockdown introduced by India and other major economies. “This time around, though, the personal risks for the workforce were significantly higher, still the support and commitment of employees of JNPT and stakeholders at a time of unprecedented crisis, is a tale of valour and hard work,” Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS futher said. In the current scenario too, overcoming the impact of COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown challenges, the port remained operational as part of essential services and played a crucial role in keeping the global supply chain active by ensuring the availability of essential goods to sustain the national and international needs. The lockdown has underlined the indispensable role of the shipping sector in nation’s economy. During the period of lockdown from 22nd March 2020 to 24th May 2020, JNPT handled 610,405 TEUs and 913,233 MT of liquid and bulk cargo. Besides handling the regular operations, JNPT has also extended support to the Export Import clients and stakeholders in these challenging times. When the DPD customers were unable to take their deliveries owing to the acute shortage of Trucks, JNPT extended timely support to

them by providing the ‘Extended Gate’ facility at ICD Mulund and ICD Tarapur; and shifting their containers there by rail without any additional shifting charges. From 13th April till date 25th May 2020, total 77 trains have facilitated the movement of an additional 5,538 TEUs of DPD containers by rail. JNPT also supported export clients based out in Hazira in the critical time when the exports were shut in the ports in their vicinity. Since April 2020 onwards, JNPT started rail movement of Export Import containers between JN Port and Dahej/Hazira, wherein 3909 TEUs of Export Import containers were moved by rail and thereafter from May 6, 2020 JN Port's own container terminal facilitated the commencement of moving empty containers by rail through CONCOR to ICD Dahej for Reliance Industries. These timely measures helped the exporters and strengthened JNPT’s hinterland connectivity. The port has completed 31 years of operation and with some major projects and strategic initiatives underway; JNPT is expected to drive the next phase of transformation at the port, benchmarking its services against the best ports in the world to constantly evolve meeting the demands of the global market.

Port of Antwerp’s total freight volume rose 0.4% in first four months of 2020 (YoY) ANTWERP: The total freight volume handled by Port of Antwerp fell in April due to the corona crisis, but rose by 0.4% overall during the first four months of this year compared with the same period last year. The container volume rose in 2020, although other freight categories such as conventional breakbulk and ro/ro remain under pressure. The number of calls by seagoing ships was also down but a number of container ships also carried more volume on average. Varied picture in 2020 Despite the impact of corona on global production and supply chains and a fall in demand as a result of the corona crisis, the port experienced slight growth in the total freight volume during the period January-April 2020 compared with the same period last year. The container volume in April was down compared with April 2019 but experienced growth of 6.1% in TEU during 2020 overall. The consequences of cancelled sailings will make themselves felt in the remainder of the second quarter. On the other hand there was a strong increase in empty boxes bound for China, which is a sign of recovery in production there. In the case of breakbulk, with steel as the most important product, the consequences of the worldwide disruptions in trade have made themselves felt since 2019 and the shutdown of some industries due to the corona crisis has led to a sharp drop of 15.7% in April and 29.1% in 2020 overall. Due to the lack of production in the automotive industry there were no imports of

new cars from Asia, and exports of European cars were similarly at a standstill. The second-hand car market was also almost completely absent as a result of the corona crisis. As a consequence the total ro/ro volume was down by 16.2% in the period January-April compared with the same period last year. As for dry bulk there was little demand for coal due to the mild winter and the shutdown of the steel industry, and so also very little outgoing traffic to the hinterland. The fact that sufficient renewable energy (solar and wind) was available in Germany also contributed to the sharp drop in outgoing coal consignments. In the meantime other bulk categories remain under pressure and are declining in volume. In the liquid bulk sector the volume was down by 2.5% in 2020, mainly due to the lower demand for oil derivatives. The volume of chemical products experienced slight growth of 0.6% during the first four months of this year compared with the same period in 2019. Impact analysis and prospects Port of Antwerp is a major international port whose activities reflect developments in the European and world economies. Despite a weaker month in April the port has been able to maintain its level of activity in terms of freight volume. The impact of lacklustre demand due to the corona crisis will make itself felt more strongly in the coming months. In the meantime, Port of Antwerp is doing everything necessary to ensure efficient functioning of the port.

Applauding the mega economic comprehensive package of Rs 20 Lakh Crores announced by the government under the dynamic and able leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, Mr Prabhu said that in the ongoing situation, first and foremost is to find the markets where demand support is given by their respective governments through a package such as the USA and EU. He also talked of identifying niche markets and key products for exports which is the need of the hour. Elaborating on the issues and challenges being faced by the Indian exporters, during a Video Conference Interaction with FIEO members on "The Way Forward" on May 22, 2020, Mr Suresh Prabhu said that easy access and availability of credit has been a key concern. RBI needs to consider exports under private sector lending, ensuring the banking system to cater to the needs of the exporters. The objective of the session was to discuss the impact of Covid-19 particularly to the exports sector wherein Industry is passing through turbulent times and to listen to his valuable thoughts to overcome such an unprecedented situation. The Reserve Bank of India may create an external market sensitive credit facility for exporters through banks and ensure banks dont charge at a higher rate for this service, which would further ensure access to lower cost of finance, reiterated Mr Prabhu. Emphasis should also be laid

on price sensitivity along with import sensitivity as both are interrelated and can determine pricing of the product. In order to increase export competitiveness, sectoral studies can be conducted to identify and address key bottlenecks in the economy, added Mr Prabhu. The Former Commerce & Industry Minister also asked for immediate action that needs to be taken for opening trade offices in the key global markets on the lines of South Korea and Canada. Emphasis needs to be laid on redefining subsidies besides aggressively supporting merchant exporters in marketing their products in such globally competitive markets. Others who attended the interactive session included FIEO Office bearers and leading exporters from all the regions of the country. FIEO President Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf during his deliberation thanked Mr Suresh Prabhu and said that COVID-19 pandemic has impacted both Indian exports and economy on a larger scale. Its repercussions on the country could well be felt now as trade and industry operations have yet to start at its full capacity. With major economies including China, US, Europe almost fully operational now, India trade and industry should be supported in a big way to start operations so that not only our exports are least impacted but our whole supply chain disruptions are also overcome, added Mr Saraf. He welcomed the package announced by the Finance Minister saying that there is still a need for more to be done for exports and also praised the

announcements made by RBI particularly for easing liquidity concerns of the exporting community to a great extent. Expressing his concern that global trade is under the element of uncertainty, which is the biggest enemy of business, DG & CEO, FIEO, Dr Ajay Sahai said that economies across the world are entering into recession. As per WTO estimates, global trade may plummet between 13-32% with further downward revision and recoveries in the trade will depend upon policy initiatives that the countries are adopting. Talking about India, Dr Sahai further informed that we may see USD 30 billion drop in Indias tourism services with almost negligible international tourist arrival in the current fiscal, however the performance of IT and ITes sector will improve during the medium term because of the focus on digitisation. With exports estimated to decline by 20% or more during the current fiscal, we may see a reduction of USD 200 billion on the imports and remittances front. Dr Sahai feels that digitisation and automation will play a key role in increasing manufacturing capabilities adversely impacting the employment. With the new norms coming in, companies may also be losing the wage advantage and hence, robotics manufacturing will come into picture. Textile manufacturing may also become vibrant in major economies. The session concluded with a highly informative and knowledgeable Q&A interaction.

Major Ports’ volume decline 21 % in April due to COVID-19 impact : ICRA Cont’d. from Pg. 3 “Although, the sector has been classified under essential services and has remained operational during the lockdown, the impact on domestic economic activity as well as slowdown in global trade has resulted in steep contraction in cargo volumes at the major ports in April 2020, with throughput decline of 21 per cent,” Icra said in a statement. While the decline was across major cargo categories, petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL), thermal coal and container segment witnessed significant contraction. The outlook for the port sector remains negative in the near to medium term, it added. K Ravichandran, Senior VP and Group Head, Icra Ratings, said: “The credit profile of port sector companies is expected to witness pressure in the near to medium

term, due to the impact of COVID -19 outbreak and the subsequent lockdown imposed. Further, entities that have recently commenced operations or concluded debt funded capacity expansions or have concentrated cargo profile like containers could come under severe pressure.” Nonetheless, well diversified players (cargo-wise) and SPVs promoted by stronger sponsors should have higher financial flexibility to weather this downturn and their debt servicing is unlikely to be materially impacted, he said. Sai krishna, Assistant Vice President and Associate-Head, Icra Ratings added: “The concessions will provide short term cash flow reliefs to PPP terminals operating at major ports, however, sustained cargo contraction post the lockdown and the need to offer discounts to revive volumes would put pressure on cash flows of the terminals, subsequently.” While all cargo segments are vulnerable, Icra said the container segment is expected to be more adversely impacted. It said while general cargo throughput may witness 5-8 per cent contraction for full year 2020-21, the container segment may witness a decline of 12-15 per cent during the same period.

Fruit, veggie exports fall 70% during lockdown NEW DELHI: Export of fruits and vegetables has fallen by about 70% since the lockdown began in late March, largely because of high air freight charges, according to exporters and officials. Fruit and vegetable exporters prefer to send cargo via flight to ensure quality and freshness of their products. But with airlines increasing their freight charges by as much as 166% to Rs 250/kg, this trade has taken a hit, they said. In India, the March-May period is peak season for export of fruits and vegetables. An official of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority

(APEDA) said that from an average of 400,000 tonnes a month in the previous year, export of fruits and vegetables are down to 120,000 tonnes a month now. “We have seen a 70% drop in business since the lockdown happened. It’s a difficult time for the exporters and only when flights resume, the situation will improve,” said Narendra Bhatia, partner at Asar Brothers, a Mumbai-based exporter. “We are getting a number of queries from new markets in Russia, Singapore and Indonesia, but the high freight charges are a deterrent to venture into these markets.” Bhatia said that more flights need to

operate and government assistance is required to push exports. “There is so much uncertainty from sourcing fr uits and vegetables to get cargo slots and timely schedule of flights that exporters have stopped giving commitments,” he said. In the initial days of the lockdown, labour and transportation were the big challenges, but gradually it was the high air freight that became the larger reason for the drop in exports, said Kaushal Khakhar, CEO of Kay Bee Exports. Exporters said that it is the peak season to export mango, banana, pomegranate and vegetables like guar, chillies, okra, bottle gourd, drumsticks and chillies.

RBI defers loan repayments by 3 more months; cuts repo rate 40 bps, eases monetary policy MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India has announced several monetary easing measures, including extending moratorium on loan repayments by another three months, and an emergency cut in the policy repo rate. Governor Shaktikanta Das today said that the Monetary Policy Committee, after an unscheduled meeting, cut policy repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.0%. The RBI Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously for reduction in the policy repo rate, while voted 5:1 in favour of the quantum of the cut, Shaktikanta Das said. Consequently, the reverse repo rate now stands reduced to 3.35%, while the MSF rate is down to 4.25%. To ease the financial stress on people and businesses, Shaktikanta Das said that the RBI has also allowed deferment of repayments of loans and working capital by another three months from June 1 to August 31 due to lockdown extension. Shaktikanta Das, while laying out the economic conditions prevailing in India amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, also said that

food inflation may remain under supply side shock, and that the elevated level of inflation in pulses is ‘worrisome’. RBI’s announcement follows the mega Rs 21 lakh crore economic package announced by the Narendra Modi government recently. In the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, RBI has so far announced various liquidity and monetary measures, totalling an economic value worth Rs 8 lakh crore. Meanwhile, FY21 GDP is expected to remain in negative due to the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking on this announcement, Mr. Rajiv Agar wal, MD & CEO, Essar Ports, said, "The RBI governor's assessment of the economy is perhaps closer to the ground reality. This is the right time for Government to start rolling out Infra spending plan of Rs 100 lakh cr in 5 years. Rs 15-20 lakh cr should be pumped in immediately. Defence and other central services can place orders to kick-start Auto sector. This will help spur consumption."

NYK successfully tests remote navigation of tugboat-progress toward practical remote navigation of ships by 2025 TOKYO: NYK and its group companies MTI Co. Ltd., Keihin Dock Co. Ltd., and Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS) have successfully tested the remote navigation of a tugboat as a part of the Japanese government’s Sea Trial Project on Remote Control Navigation. Outline of the Remote Navigation Test Within Tokyo Bay, a tugboat equipped with a manned remotely controlled system*** was operated remotely from an operation center in the city of Nishinomiya in Hyogo prefecture approximately 400 kilometers away. This tugboat was maneuvered approximately 12 kilometers in Tokyo Bay between an area off Honmoku and an area off the port of Yokosuka. The operator in the remote operation center was able to use sensors and cameras equipped to the tugboat to recognize surrounding conditions and created a route plan and action plan (collision avoidance route plan). The operator shared the plans with the tugboat captain, who then approved them. The conditions that remotely navigated tugboat proceeded operations in accordance with the approved route plan and action plan were confirmed and evaluated. Future Development In the future, NYK and its group companies will work to overcome ship-to-shore communication issues that were revealed during this experiment, further improve the system, and aim to start remote navigation tests using domestic coastal ships within this year. We will continue to work with our partners to develop technology for large vessels in the future.

Policy rates cut, extended moratorium along with pre & post shipment credit extension by RBI are much-needed welcome step: FIEO NEW DELHI: Welcoming the repo and reverse repo rate cut of 40 basis points by RBI, extension in the moratorium period for another three months till 31st August, 2020 along with the extension of the pre and post shipment credit for the exports sector from existing 12 months to 15 months has come as a much needed respite for the overall exports sector, said FIEO President Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf, as this will allow more liquidity in the hands of the exporters thereby helping them in fulfilling their overall export obligation during such difficult and testing times. We are ushering into an era of very competitive credit rates to help manufacturing and overall economy, said FIEO Chief. The above measures will not only help in revival of growth but will also help in mitigating the impact of Covid-19 while ensuring that the inflation remains within the target range, observed Mr Saraf. Besides steps taken with regard to outward remittance for imports being extended from 6 months to 12 months, will help importers as they

will have the longer repatriation period. Rs 15000 Crore line of credit to Export Import Bank for Dollar Swap facility will help in leveraging long term and project exports as a “marketing tool” as buyers would be more willing to buy products from the seller. However, self-sufficiency on the Forex Reserve front with USD 487 billion equivalent to 1 year of imports is quite a good sign for the economy. Further RBI’s assessment of the economic revival during the first half remains bleak with signs of revival to be only seen during the second half of the financial year, President FIEO urged the government for immediate announcement of an export package covering all the sectors of exports and implementation of the economic measures announced at the ground level for quick and early starting of trade and businesses across the country during such difficult and testing times. Mr Saraf suggested that RBI should continuously monitor the delicate economic situation and make pragmatic announcements after every two months’ interval.

Measures announced by RBI will help India’s stressed export sector: TPCI NEW DELHI: Reacting to the announcements made by the RBI on 22 May, Mr Mohit Singla Chairman, Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) said, “The financially stressed exporters will benefit from unforeseen circumstances beyond control, on account of importers inability to pay within six months and thus causing offence in India. Therefore, increasing the time of outward remittance from 6 months to 12 months, will surly help as they will have the longer payment time.” The loan moratorium increase from 3 months to 6 months is a very welcome move allowing an exporter with a wider window to manage financial conditions better. This will ease the pressure from borrowers of one-time accumulated payment by increasing the

payback cycle, he added. Further, Singla said, “Extending the swap facility for Export Import banks, extension of import payments from 6 month to 12 month and increasing the exporters’ length of credit to 15 months from one year are the much needed steps which will solve the working capital woes for the traders to a considerable extent and ease the pressure of making immediate payment.” Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision to reduce the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 40 bps to 4.0 per cent from 4.40 per cent will smooth liquidity for short term and will help in keeping consumer price regulated, Singla added.

Exporters face cash crunch as buyers demand double the credit to 120 days NEW DELHI: Many firms especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are bearing the brunt of plummeting global demand with buyers insisting for longer payment cycle of upto 120 days. Payment terms vary from supplier to supplier and generally range from 0-60 days. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has advised its members to deal with buyers in countries where governments have come out with fiscal stimulus to revive demand. "We are telling our members that when you are looking into the markets, focus on those where government of the country has given demand-led stimulus. For example, take US, it has given $3.2 trillion stimulus already in the form of cash subsidy in hands of the people. Similarly, European Union, despite each country giving its own stimulus, has given 500 billion euro stimulus. So, the point is if you are giving stimulus which leads to demand, the importer when he imports goods would find it

easy to sell," FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai said. "It (focusing on countries that have announced demand-led stimulus) will, therefore, be very good strategy that will work," he added. As impact of coronavirus pandemic deepens, liquidity has become a major problem in both domestic and international markets. Demand has slumped worldwide and export cycle is expected to get elongated. Domestic exporters are already feeling the heat as buyers ask for longer payment cycle while placing fresh orders. Some exporters say their customers are sticking to previous payment terms. Pankaj Bansal, Director of Delhi-based auto-parts trader TMA International says he has not seen any change in payment terms so far either in case of export or import. "This is happening with most of the people. People are accepting that as they have no choice," he noted. Companies are facing inordinate delay in getting payments and coronavirus-

afflicted lockdown has accentuated the problem. The worst affected among them are micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). While there is no official estimate of the total dues, Angel Broking in a report last week said that total outstanding payments to MSME units could be in excess of Rs 4.95 lakh crore. Further, the central government ministries and departments, state governments and public sector units owe MSMEs more than half of this amount. As per government guidelines, payments of MSMEs are to be cleared within 45 days but in reality it takes much longer. Only 40.1 percent respondents said they get payments within 90 days. While payments is a major problem, MSMEs have been grappling with slump in demand in both domestic and export markets adding to their woes. The government has announced a slew of relief of measures including Rs 3 lakh crore collateral-free loan for the sector but the pain is set to continue at least in the short term.

Physical copy of key export document mandatory for shipments to Thailand, Vietnam under FTA NEW DELHI: Exporters sending their shipments to Thailand and Vietnam under a free trade agreement (FTA) will have to submit physical applications to avail the lower duty benefits. The government has restored the procedure for issuance of physical copy of certificates of origin as exporters had expressed difficulties in obtaining preferential access in Thailand and Vietnam based on digitally signed electronic certificates. In April, the commerce and ministry had allowed exporters to obtain the Certificate of Origin (CoO) online as offices issuing these documents were closed on account of lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The certificate is important to claim duty concessions under FTAs. “The CoO applications under ASEAN-India FTA for exports to Thailand and Vietnam should now be

submitted manually by the exporters to the offices of the designated issuing agencies i.e. EIA, MPEDA and Textile and Textile Committee,” Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a trade notice. An exporter has to submit the certificate at the landing port of the importing country. “These countries had asked for reciprocity so that Indian customs can also accept their exporters’ digital certificates. However, since this facility is not available in India, the government has had to roll back the online certificate facility,” said a trade expert, adding that China too has demanded reciprocity from India under the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement. APTA (formerly known as the Bangkok Agreement) is the only operational trade pact linking India and China. South Korea, Bangladesh, Lao PDR and Sri Lanka are also APTA members.

The e-platform will not accept CoO applications submitted for exports destined to Thailand and Vietnam, DGFT said. However, it shall continue to accept and process CoO applications for export to other countries under ASEAN-India FTA, it added. “These agencies (EIA, MPEDA and Textile Committee) will henceforth issue the Certificate of Origin in physical paper format as was being done before...for Thailand and Vietnam, till further notice,” DGFT said. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India trade in goods agreement was signed on August 13, 2009, and became effective from January 1, 2010. Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, M a l a y s i a , P h i l i p p i n e s , Vi e t n a m , Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and Laos are the member countries of Asean.

RBI's announcement for exporters welcome but problem is far bigger: EEPC NEW DELHI: The RBI's extension of time limit for pre and post-shipment export credit sanctioned by banks along with reduction of 40 basis points in the repo policy rate would ease exporters' distress , but the problem is far greater, posing existential crisis for the export sector, said Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) in a release issued. As RBI Governor Mr Shaktikanta Das has clearly stated in his policy

statement that the global economy is ''inexorably headed into recession'', much more needs to be done for the highly employment-oriented export sector. While the moratorium and working capital relaxations are welcome, exporters would need direct fiscal support for staying alive in business. These measures can be in the form of waiver of electricity user charges, reduction of levies at the ports,freight support and wage support for workers.

The RBI has decided to increase the maximum permissible period of preshipment and post-shipment export credit sanctioned by banks from the existing one year to 15 months, for disbursements made up to July 31, 2020 . This should ease pressure, but the liquidity transmission along with reduction in interest rates should be effected in a swift manner by banks, without being obsessed too much with ' case to case approach'.

Central Warehousing Corporation achieves highest ever turnover of about Rs.1710 Crore Hands over interim dividend of Rs.35.77 crore to Union Minister Shri Ram Vilas Paswan N E W D E L H I : T h e C e n t r a l Wa r e h o u s i n g Corporation (CWC) achieved highest ever turnover of about Rs. 1710 Crore during 2019-20. The Managing Director of CWC, Shri Arun Kumar Shrivasatava handed over the Dividend Cheque of Rs 35.77 crore to the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan in the presence of Secretary, Food & Public Distribution, Shri Sudhanshu Pandey and other Senior Officers of the Ministry and CWC. Shri Paswan commended CWC for its good performance. CWC has declared interim dividend for the year 2019-20 @95.53% of its paid-up capital as against 72.20% last year. Out of total dividend of Rs 64.98 crore, the Government of India share is Rs 35.77 crore as 55% equity is held by the Government of India. The final dividend for the year 2019-20 shall be declared in the Annual General Meeting of shareholders.

Yang Ming holds Naming Ceremony for 2,800 TEU New Ships TAIWAN: Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.(Yang Ming) held the naming ceremony for two of its 2,800 TEU class full container vessels ‘YM Celebrity’ & ‘YM Continent’ at CSBC’s Kaohsiung shipyard on May 20th. The ceremony was officiated jointly by Yang Ming Chairman Bronson Hsieh and CSBC Corporation Chairman Cheng Wen-Lon. Mrs. Yang Yu-Chen, wife of Yang Ming Executive Vice President Michael Shih, and Mrs. Hung Ya-Lun, wife of Yang Ming Executive Vice President Patrick Tu, had the honor to officially name the two ships respectively during the ceremony. The series of ten 2,800 TEU full container vessels constructed at CSBC shipyard is expected to be delivered and added to Yang Ming’s fleet from this May throughout the second quarter of 2021. This type of vessels has a nominal capacity of 2,940 TEU and is equipped with 353 plugs for reefer containers. With a length of 209.75 meters, a width of 32.8 meters, a draft of 11.2 meters, the ships are designed to cruise at a speed up to 21 knots. The new vessels adopt the energy-saving Sea Sword Bow technology and the exclusive Full Spade Rubber design to offer greater operational

efficiency and eco-friendly advantages. The newbuildings are equipped with Total Watch System (multifunction workstation for Radar/Chart radar/ECDIS/Conning/Route planning) to enable safer and more efficient navigation. In addition, they also have global satellite broadband and network layout capabilities which will enable Yang Ming’s global fleet to attain more competitive advantages in environmental protection and fleet management. In response to the steady growth seen in Asian markets, the new 2,800 TEU vessels are designed with the flexibility to cater for the requirement to call at major ports in the Asian region and will operate in Yang Ming’s Intra-Asia services. These new ships with low fuel consumption features will further reduce the company’s operating costs while replacing older or chartered-in vessels. With the delivery of these vessels, the competitiveness of Yang Ming’s fleet will be greatly optimized. YM Celebrity and YM Continent will be deployed to Yang Ming’s JTS service and provide efficient delivery service. The port rotation of JTS is Nagoya – Tokyo – Chiba – Yokohama – Keelung – Kaohsiung – Hong Kong – Shekou – Xiamen.

Port of Rotterdam reduces frequency of COVID-19 meetings ROTTERDAM: The Port of Rotterdam has reduced the frequency of meetings for the COVID-19 port consultation committee to once a week from daily meetings. The committee will continue to carefully monitor the situation and issue reports. The decision was made following a period of stability in terms of the impact the virus had on operations at the port and in the region. “We have experienced unprecedented volatility in container shipping during the last two months due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with our partners in local and national government and our customers and stakeholders we have been focused on ensuring all of our staff and communities are safe,” said Hans Nagtegaal, Head of Containers, Port of Rotterdam. “We are now operating at pre-COVID-19 levels, although the container volumes are lower because of blank sailings, we are ready for when the markets recover,” he added.

On May 13, the port recorded ship calls comparable to the same day 2019, although a storm may have contributed to some vessels sheltering at the port on that day. Allard Castelein, President and CEO, Port of Rotterdam Authority said: “In view of the economic significance of the port, it goes without saying that ship handling has been designated by the Dutch government as a vital process, both for the Netherlands and for consumers and producers in the European hinterland. Shippers, shipping companies, manufacturing industry, consumers: everyone counts on Rotterdam. “I am proud that the port industrial complex fulfils this important responsibility day after day. From shipping shed and rower to global players in container handling and oil refineries, they all contribute to this. Freight transshipment and production will continue unabated. The Harbor Master's Division ensures safety and order on the water. The port continues to operate and is operational 24/7”.
