JNPCT facing technical issues, SOP now in place for business continuity NAVI MUMBAI: 'There has been a technical issue at JNPCT, one of the five container terminals a t J N P T. G o v t a g e n c i e s a r e working to resolve it. While there is a system disruption, there has been no effect on the cargo operations at JNPCT. To ensure business continuity, a standard operating procedure has been chalked out for an interim period for handling Export Import containers at JNPCT through alternate arrangements from February 23, 2022. Howsoever there has been no impact on the operations at the other 4 terminals at JNPT.'

Exports up 26.40% to $25.33 billion during February 1-21 NEW DELHI: The country’s merchandise exports rose by 26.4 per cent to USD 25.33 billion this month till February 21 on account of healthy performance by sectors including gems and jewellery, engineering, textiles and chemicals, according to the commerce ministry data. The exports during February 1-21 last year stood at USD 20.04 billion. The outbound shipments during February 15-21 grew by 26.87 per cent to USD 9.02 billion as compared to USD 7.11 billion in February 15-21 last year, the preliminary data showed. Cumulatively, exports during April-January 2021-22 rose by 46.53 per cent to USD 335.44 billion as against USD 228.9 billion in the same period last year. The ministry is hopeful that the exports would cross the USD 400 billion target by the end of this fiscal.

Seaways Shipping sets new records in Paradip Port Cont’d. from Pg. 3 This vessel has LOA of 291.8 m and a beam of 45m. It carried 124,704 mt of limestone and pyroxenite in bulk from Mina Saqr, UAE for Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL). In the recent past, the trade has been encouraged to bring bigger vessels to Paradip port, due to the improved facilities and the assurance of reliable support provided by Seaways. This achievement is another outcome of “Sagarmala”, the vision of Shri Narendra Modi’s Government to usher in prosperity through port-led development.

Tripura signs MoU with IWAI to set up Inland Waterways Terminal to boost Indo-Bangla connectivity AGARTALA: The Tripura government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to set up a inland waterways terminal at Srimantapur in Sepahijala district, where a test run was held in September, 2020 for Indo-Bangla inland waterways transport. The project is expected to boost the state’s ambitious waterways transport, connectivity and border trade with Bangladesh. After signing the MoU, Union minister for ports and shipping Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, “Took part in an important MoU signing ceremony between @IWAI_ShipMin, @ L PA I _ O f f i c i a l a n d Tr i p u r a G o v t a l o n g w i t h C M Shri @BjpBiplab in Agartala. 10 new Jetties will be built on the Gomati river which will give more Gati to Indo-Bangladesh trade via waterways”. He also said in a separate tweet that Tripura holds huge potential in its waterways and that the central government would conduct studies and hydrological survey on the other rivers of the state and depending on the feasibility, take further action to develop them. Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for facilitating the project, CM Biplab Kumar Deb later said in a tweet that connectivity development in the NE region is facilitated by the ‘double engine’ government in the state and the centre. Export-import trade with Bangladesh commenced in Tripura in 1995. Tripura currently imports goods worth Rs 20,000 crore from Bangladesh and other Indian states

annually. Among these, goods worth Rs. 645 crore is imported from Bangladesh. Tripura, on the other hand, exports Rs. 2000 crore worth of goods such as rubber, bamboo, tea and pineapple. The huge trade deficit is due to abnormally high import duty apparatus on the other side of the border, absence of many commodities abundant here in the list of good allowed for export and port restrictions. The state government is hopeful of turning the tables with the newly launched inland waterways connectivity route with Bangladesh, since the inland waterways route through Tripura could provide an alternative to the current arrangements of importing goods through Haldia Port in Bengal, 1,200 Kms away. Chittagong port in Bangladesh is located much closer, at a distance of 600 Kms.

Container shortage easing, but demand remains high LONDON: Shippers and carriers are starting to see a return to normalcy in container availability after the shortages that helped to fuel supply chain disruption last year. Leading box equipment lessors report that increased production of containers – coupled with stabilizing prices – has alleviated some of the supply chain constraints witnessed in recent months. Though supply is expected to meet demand this year, the container market remains tight. “We expect container supply will better keep pace with demand in 2022 due to increased new container production volumes, and new container prices have eased over 10 percent from their peak level to roughly $3,400 per 20 dry container. However, new container prices remain far above their historical range, and market leasing rates and used container sale prices also remain very high,” said Brian Sondey, Triton International CEO, following the release of the company’s full year results. He added that while the global economy remains subject to heightened uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company expects overall container demand to remain strong through the year. “Our customers are anticipating goods consumption and trade volumes will remain elevated, and they expect the operational challenges slowing container turn times will be difficult to resolve,” he said. Textainer CEO Olivier Ghesquiere observed that although lessors continue to see opportunities for growth at attractive yields this year, they are starting to see more normalized levels of container capital expenditure following a record year.

“As trade volume remains elevated, shipping lines have continued to grow their capacity while also positioning additional containers in locations with surplus demand,” Ghesquiere said. He added that the impact from COVID-19 also continues to affect the overall market, prolonging supply-chain disruption – and creating additional demand for containers. Triton and Textainer are the world’s largest lessors of intermodal freight containers, with a container fleet of 7.3 million TEUs and 4.3 million TEUs respectively. Both companies reported impressive full year earnings driven by an increase in lease prices due to the container shortage crisis. In 2021, container supply struggled to catch up to demand for most of the year, despite a significant increase in new container production. This led to record prices for new containers and very high market leasing rates. Data by global shipping consultancy Drewry shows that container lease rates have surged significantly in recent months, breaching the $6,500 threshold in the second quarter of 2021. This was the highest value since Drewry started monitoring container equipment prices back as far as 1998. In 2021, the consultancy projected full-year production of containers to reach 5.2 million TEUs, representing a 67 percent year-on-year increase. While the main buyers of the equipment have been lessors, accounting for 68 percent of purchases, carriers have also been investing more in their own container pools over the near term.

IAPH Environmental Ship Index to include New Module of Ships at Berth TOKYO: IAPH is pleased to announce that the process to build a new module for the IAPH Environmental Ship Index (ESI) has commenced. The new module will focus on the environmental performance of ships at berth for each port call. An online kick-off meeting by the project team was held yesterday, Monday 21 February. The module will initially focus on cruise shipping and will be funded by contributions from major cruise ports and IAPH. It will develop in two phases, starting with the reporting model, followed by the development of an at-berth

performance- and emissions indicator. A core working group of ports, representatives from the cruise industry and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), and the website building company Nalta, has been established to accompany the development phases. The project is led by the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Amsterdam, being supported by IAPH and Green Award Foundation, which manages the ESI operation, and Starcrest. The aim is to have the at berth module in full operation by the beginning of 2023.

Maersk new Intermodal Freight Services to start between Far East to Europe COPENHAGEN: S t . P e t e r s b u r g , Fu l l y operational as from this week, the new AE66 service links Korea, Japan and China to the Kaliningrad Region in Russia, the Baltic countries, and Poland through Trans-Siberian. The new Sea-Rail-Sea service runs west-bound fortnightly departing from the seaport of Vostochniy in Russia Far East (at the Pacific to Kaliningrad on the Baltic sea, with robust outlooks for further expansion. Transit times of the new regular service are significantly reduced vs purely Ocean services: it can transport goods in less than 20 days from Busan to Kaliningrad and the adjacent locations in the Baltics region, compared to an average of 55-60 days for Ocean routes via the Suez Canal. “Maersk A66 services comes at the perfect time to help ease current logistics woes to move goods shipped from the Far East to Europe. The new offering provides global traders shorter transit times, cost-friendliness, and greener services. With tens of

thousands of containers moving from Asia – Europe, providing creative solutions that offer better customer experience is the main driver of our activity, said Zsolt Katona, Eastern Europe Managing Director, A.P. Moller –Maersk. Fixed sailings in Asia as well as stable departures by TransSiberian Rail from Vostochniy will enable highly reliable on-time delivery, similar to AE19 and AE77 services, the other Sea- RailSea services currently offered by A.P.
