NEW DELHI: Asserting that lack of robust road connectivity to ports is one of the major bottlenecks faced by the shipping sector in India, a parliamentary panel has expressed concern over slow progress of port connectivity roads under Bharatmala Pariyojana. It noted that even though the initially targeted date of completion of Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I was 2021-22, only 168 km of the port connectivity roads have been awarded while the rest 2,105 km are in various stages of Cont’d. Pg. 4 detailed project report (DPR) preparation.

Addressing the FICCI Annual Convention and 94th AGM, Mr Subrahmanyam, pointed out that the Indian government is working on Future Ready Commerce. This will work on multiple things. First and foremost, there will be a separate export promotion wing with a footprint in all Indian missions abroad and in every state of India.

He further added that a Bi-lateral and Multilateral engagement department will be constituted under the trade negotiation wing. He emphasised that the flavour of today is bilateral trade, and the government is negotiating Free Trade Agreements with multiple countries such as UAE, Australia, United States EU, which will be completed by next year. These will

cover many other aspects such as public procurement, intellectual property, social development etc. He also shared that a market intelligence will also be set up across the states of India which will be a great boon for the industry in boosting their export. In addition, the Ministry is working on a Brand India strategy under an overarching objective of trade promotion across the globe.

"The Committee strongly recommends that the Ministry should take a serious look at the various factors impeding the award of these road projects and take urgent steps and

undertake dedicated efforts to iron out the same to bolster the growth of the shipping sector in the country," the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture said in a report.

The panel also said it is deeply concerned to note the extremely slow progress of works under development of port connectivity roads as a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana.

With PLI schemes & Global demand recovery, India exports likely to y high in New Year NEW DELHI: After staging a strong recovery from COVID-induced slowdown in 2021, India's exports are likely to extend the growth story to the New Year also on increased demand in the global markets, boost in domestic manufacturing due to production-linked incentive schemes and implementation of some interim trade pacts. Expectations of positive growth in the country's exports are also backed up by the outlook of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which predicts a 4.7 percent expansion in the global merchandise trade volume in 2022. Exporters believe that the outbound shipments would cross USD 400 billion mark in this fiscal going by the current momentum and may reach USD 475 billion in 2022-23. However, the growth and global demand will also depend on whether the countries would be able to contain COVID19 and the new variant Omicron through massive vaccination worldwide, they suggest. According to a Reserve Bank of India survey, released in September, exports of software services, including services delivered by foreign affiliates of Indian companies, stood at USD 148.3 billion in the fiscal year to March 31, 2021. This is more than USD 145.3 billion the world's top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia expects from oil sales in 2021. With the largest engineering population in the world, the software export story was seeded about four decades ago and has huge potential to go up further. But software exports are just a

part of India's export-led growth story which is gaining momentum. Commerce Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said that the world respects India as a trusted global business partner now and the country's exports are growing in regions including the Middle East, Arica and South American nations, besides India's traditional destinations. "An intense review and monitoring at macro and geographical levels are helping to find new areas of trading relationships. Various measures to improve ease of doing business, incentivisation schemes like PLIs, rationalisation of duties is facilitating the trade like never before," he was quoted. To boost exports, the government has taken several measures such as notifying RoDTEP (Remissions of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) rates, and releasing Rs 56,027 crore against pending tax refunds of exporters and steps to promote ease of doing business, the secretary added. Subrahmanyam said that a series of measures by the central government and the resilience of Indian exporters have helped in registering record growth in exports so far. According to another senior official, the Department of Commerce is working on the new Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) and aggressively negotiating Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with key trading partners including the UAE, the UK and Australia and these measures would help in registering record growth in exports in

"next year as well". The centre has implemented a series of steps to promote exports of both goods and services and that includes the introduction of RoDTEP and Rebate of State and Central Levies and Taxes (RoSCTL) Schemes, the launch of Common Digital Platform for Certificate of Origin to facilitate trade and increase FTA utilization by exporters, promoting districts as export hubs by identifying products with export potential in each district and addressing bottlenecks, and promoting ease of doing business. The recently introduced PLI schemes will also support growth in the New Year, particularly in mobile, electronics and drugs and pharma sectors as incremental production will push additional exports as well. According to Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Director General Ajay Sahai, much will depend on whether "we would be able to contain Covid-19 through massive vaccination across the globe and be able to create required capacity". This will decide whether the country should look for 15-20 per cent growth or even more and looking into the emergence of new variants and supply-side challenges at this point of time, "we would like to be a little conservative and will aim for an export of USD 460-475 billion in 202223," he said. Sahai added that while the demand side of exports should be taken care of by the industry, industry and the government should work together to address the supply side challenges.

scripting a success story during pandemic times when businesses across the world are facing problems. Sitting in their homes, women are now getting jobs and are being trained by the state government to ensure they come out with flying colours. Says Asha Sankhla from Asha Art and Crafts, "We make all types of leather bags, canvas bags, leather sofa, chair, tools, butterfly chairs, wall decor products etc. Connecting with Mission Niryatak is sure

to help us boost our orders due to which we shall be able to give more work to women artisans associated with us." Asha Art and Crafts has been named after and runs on my mother`s name who inspired us to get into this business and is showing us the direction, says her son Kamal Sankhla. In fact, we are creating a new set of women entrepreneurs who are setting up their own team of women and completing the orders given to them, he adds.

MARSEILLE: The CMA CGM Group, a world market leader shipping and logistics, is using its logistics capacity to help producers in La Réunion during the holiday period. A dedicated ight between mainland France and La Réunion Island for the holiday period Thanks to its CMA CGM Air Cargo division, CMA CGM is using one of its aircraft to transport exotic fruits (grapefruit, passion fruit and lychees), fragile foodstuffs that can only be transported by air, from La Réunion Island to mainland France. In total, around 60 tons of goods will be carried from La Réunion Island to mainland France. The A330 F aircraft departed from Roland Garros airport for Paris Charles de Gaulle airport on the morning of Thursday, December 16. APM Terminals investment in Apapa hits USD438 million THE HAGUE: Nigeria’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Apapa has invested USD438 million (about N180 billion) in the upgrade of its facility, acquisition of modern cargo handling equipment and support of seamless service since it won concession of the terminal in 2006. The investment is the highest of any port terminal operator in Nigeria. The Terminal Manager of APM Terminals Apapa, Steen Knudsen, said the terminal is on an exciting journey of major transformation to deliver greater, sustainable benefits to the Nigerian economy and society. “Since inception, we have invested around USD438 million purely in the handling equipment we have in the terminal. We have acquired mobile harbour cranes, rubber tyred gantry cranes, reach stackers, forklifts, terminal trucks, empty handlers and invested in yard improvements,” said Knudsen. Workforce Development “Of equal importance is the ongoing investment in the development of our workforce, ensuring that we continuously develop our staff. This covers training, career progression and, of course, expanding the business and creating new jobs. “At the moment we are also focusing on investing in our facilities: renovating our buildings, upgrading in-gate and out-gate facilities and terminal fencing and lighting. We have also equipped the parking area access with a facial recognition system and expanded our terminal fleet with new shuttle buses and pickup trucks.” Other investments at the terminal are aimed at simplifying and enhancing trade. For a long time shipping has been a very manual and paper-heavy process. The terminal is adopting global best practices for digitalized

products, such as advanced online container tracking and monitoring, container email notifications and online billing and payments, in order to ensure that importers and exporters enjoy a seamless service from the terminal. APM Terminals Apapa also recently launched a massive digitization of its operations and services through the deployment of a 4G LTE wireless network, and a new Operation Command Centre to enhance quality service delivery. Wireless connectivity supports APM Terminals’ global initiatives such as the standardisation of Terminal Operating Systems, reporting and support; Asset Digitalization; and GPS based Position Detection Systems used for auto-locating containers in a yard. Handling Increased Volumes “We remain committed to deepening our investment in Apapa to enable us handle increasing volumes at the port. Our investments will create capacity to handle growth in the economy to support the Federal Government’s efforts on trade growth and improve service delivery across the logistics chain,” concluded Knudsen.

Centre and Maharashtra sign MoU for 5 MMLP MUMBAI: The Modi Government and Maharashtra government has signed a pact to set up five more Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) in the state during a conference in the presence of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The MMLPs will be set up in in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik and Dighi Port Industrial Estate. According to the agreement, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will provide the land for MMLPs, and National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) will

provide external road connectivity to the sites, and RVNL will give external rail connectivity. The union minister was in Mumbai to attend a conference on investment opportunities in highway, transport and logistics. Gadkari said the government proposes to set up as many as 35 MMLPs at strategic locations at a total cost of Rs. 50,000 crore and once they are functional, they will enable seamless freight movement across multiple modes and help reduce our imports and increase exports. He also said that one of the MMLPs

will soon be functional in his home city of Nagpur and the other two in Chennai and Assam. The model concession agreement for MMLPs has been finalised and they will be developed as part of the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model, the minister said. MMLPs have been conceptualised to enable seamless intermodal freight movement and offer multiple functionalities such as freight aggregation and distribution. Storage, warehousing solutions, value-added services like Custom clearances and IT services will also be provided.

PM Gati Shakti Roll-out gets Impetus : Empowered Group of Secretaries holds its 1st meeting NEW DELHI: The Government has constituted Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) headed by Cabinet Secretary with Secretaries of 20 Infrastructure and Economic User Ministries as members of EGoS to monitor implementation of PM GatiShakti. The first meeting of EGoS was held yesterday under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary. The CEO Niti Aayog was special invitee for the first meeting of EGOS. The EGoS reviewed the progress made so far. The Prime Minister , Shri Narendra Modi launched PM GatiShakti National Master Plan for providing multimodal connectivity to various Economic Zones in the country. PM GatiShakti aims to reduce the logistics cost. Currently, the logistics cost in India is about 13% of the GDP whereas in other developed countries it is to the extent of 8%. Government is committed to reduce the cost of logistics to ensure competitiveness of our manufacturing

sector, better realisation of prices to farmers and availability of goods at cheaper prices to consumers. Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinfor matics (BISAG-N), which has developed the National Master Plan informed the EGoS that over 300 layers of data has been mapped on to GIS based national master plan. It was further informed that all the Central Ministries and most of the State Governments have started updation of their required layers. Department for P romotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), being the nodal department for PM GatiShatki informed about the administrative arrangements made for monitoring and coordination of PM GatiShakti. Network Planning Group (NPG) comprising representatives from 7 Central Ministries has already been constituted. High Powered Expert Group of Professionals is being constituted to support the NPG. The EGoS made several important

decisions in the meeting. It has been decided to compile the infrastructural gaps as felt by various Economic Ministries. This is to be forwarded to the concerned Infrastructure Ministry for appropriate consideration to include in the annual action plan for next financial year. Decision was made to study the multimodal connectivity to all the economic zones in the country on priority so that gaps are identified. Any such system or process, which is causing enhanced logistics cost are to be identified and deliberated upon and measures are to be taken including necessary administrative decisions so as to reduce cost. EGoS emphasised the need for digitisation. It was felt necessary to integrate all management information systems of different so as to enable ease of usage. EGoS has also emphasised that all the Ministries should include in their planning logistics cost reduction at the core so as to achieve the objective of PM GatiShakti.

India welcomes interest of Central Asian countries to use Chabahar Port NEW DELHI: The 3rd meeting of the India-Central Asia Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 19 December 2021 under the chairmanship of the External Affairs Minister of India. Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan took part in the meeting. External Affairs Minister of India congratulated the Foreign Ministers of Central Asian countries on the 30th anniversary of their independence. The Foreign Ministers of the Central Asian countries congratulated the External Affairs Minister of India on the ongoing celebrations of 75 years of India’s independence. The Ministers expressed their readiness to joint celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Central Asian States in 2022. The Ministers noted the need for continued large-scale and long-term economic cooperation between Central Asian countries and India in order to strengthen and expand interconnectivity. In this context, the Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan stressed on the importance

of TAPI gas pipeline project. The Ministers emphasized on optimum usage of the Inter national North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) as well as Ashgabat Agreement on International Transport and Transit Corridor to enhance connectivity between India and the Central Asian countries. They stress that connectivity initiatives should be based on the principles of transparency, broad participation, local priorities, financial sustainability and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. They welcomed the proposal to inc lu de C ha b a ha r Po r t w it hin t he framework of INSTC and expressed interest in cooperation on issues related to the development and strengthening of regional connectivity in Central and South Asia. In this regard, the Ministers noted the outcomes of the High-Level International Conference "Central and South Asia: Regional Connectivity; Challenges and Opportunities”, held on 15-16 July 2021 in Tashkent as well as the second India-Uzbekistan-Iran trilateral meeting on the joint use of Chabahar Port

in December 2021. India welcomed the interest of Central Asian countries to utilize the services of Shahid Beheshti Terminal at Chabahar Port for facilitating their trade with India and beyond. The Sides agreed to continue engagement for further developing the transit and transport potential of their countries, improving the logistics network of the region and promoting joint initiatives to create regional and international transport corridors. The Sides agreed to explore possibilities to establish joint working group(s), including participation of private sector, to address issues of free movements of goods and services between India and Central Asian countries.

Hapag-Lloyd launches its ninth Quality Promise: “Always Accessible” HAMBURG: With the launch of its ninth Quality Promise, “Always Accessible“, Hapag-Lloyd is addressing a key factor of customer satisfaction: quick accessibility when support is needed. Receiving millions of calls a year, Hapag-Lloyd recognizes the importance of a reliable and responsive phone service to maintain strong customer relations. Intending to enhance its accessibility, Hapag-Lloyd has set itself the ambitious goal to pick up customer calls within 12 seconds in at least 90 percent of the time and to ensure an overall call pick-up rate of 97 percent. To achieve these targets and to ensure measurability along the way, the carrier will gradually introduce new processes and systems worldwide. “We have all experienced this: spending valuable time waiting for a call to be answered. Especially in business, customers cannot afford to waste time waiting. By promising to always be accessible, we are underlining our dedication to swiftly respond to our customers’ needs“, says Juan Carlos Duk, Managing Director Global Commercial Development. “Targeting a high level of customer service has always been a key aspect in our Strategy 2023. Picking up the phone fast, avoiding delays and significantly reducing abandoned calls is a huge step to enhance our customers’ experience each time they contact our Customer Service. We understand that it is our responsibility to respect their time.“ To put its promise into practice, Hapag-Lloyd has started to standardize internal processes, reorganize points of contact and implement a new unified contact center. A new case handling system, together with

an advanced phone system provides the necessary options to personalize all communication. After a particular PIN, case or shipment number has been entered into the system, each customer will be connected directly to the right Customer Service expert. In future, every call shall be proceeded within seconds. Once rolled out globally, the phone setup will offer the same menu choices and functionality in each country, thus reducing any inconvenience or customer uncertainty. Hapag-Lloyd offers insights on its performance on “Always Accessible“ via its Customer Dashboard. Here, customers can track pick-up times and the number of abandoned calls on a global as well as on individual customer level. By promptly providing a tailored and industry-specific service, Hapag-Lloyd aims to strengthen its customer ties and move another step closer to its overall goal of becoming "Number One for Quality".
