APM Terminals Pipavav achieves 1,000 days of safe operations milestone This is the second me, the Port has achieved this milestone

P I PAVAV: A P M Te r m i n a l s P i p a v a v, t o d a y s u c c e s s f u l l y achieved 1,000 days of safe operations with no casualties and loss time injury (LTI). The highest level of safety is the result of the continuous training, monitoring, and supervising of all operations as well as employees’ proactive initiatives to embrace safety in daily work. The milestone is even more significant considering the ‘extremely severe’ cyclone Tauktae

that impacted the operations at the Port earlier in the year. To celebrate this momentous occasion, a small program was organised at the port. The management congratulated the employees for their triumphant milestone and lauded their efforts and commitment to safety. Safety is at the core of the o p e r a t i o n s a t A P M Te r m i n a l s Pipavav. The port has embarked on APM Terminals’ designated safety initiatives to ensure maximum safety with collaborative efforts in transportation, suspended loads and lifting, working at heights, stored energy, and control of contractors. Commenting on the milestone,

We are proud to successfully accomplish 1000 days of safe operations at the port. This has been made possible only because of the proactive, dedicated, and continuous efforts of our various teams to engage the employees positively at the workplace. This is just the beginning and I look forward to our journey to safe operations for years to come.”

India transforms into Global Rice exporting hub NEW DELHI: India has emerged as a major global player in rice export during the past 20 months. Part of its credit goes to the Covid-19 pandemic, because of which other major rice exporting countries failed to meet world demand, as India took the opportunity to export more rice worldwide. The steep growth of the rice exports can be attributed to the fact that India’s exports during fiscal year 2021 ended March 31 registered a 112 per cent increase – the highest ever growth since India started exporting rice. The situation is equally encouraging for fiscal year 2022 – from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022 – where rice exports logged a 72 per cent rise in the first four months against the corresponding period last year. If rice exporters are to be believed, India could have exported much more than the current figure, had there not been an acute shortage of containers,

and rice in ocean and inland freight. The exponential rise in export is despite the fact that Indian exporters had to face a series of hurdles including steep rice in container freight, transport freight and other handling charges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, admitted All India Rice Exporters Association executive director Vinod Kaul. “If we talk of 2020-21, India exported 13 million metric tonnes [mmt] nonbasmati rice and around 4.5mmt basmati rice – which comes to around 17.5mmt rice. It is more than 37 per cent of the total world export [47 MMT],” he said. There are mainly four major rice exporting countries, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan. In the last fiscal year, India’s rice exports were more than the cumulative exports of the other three major exporting countries – Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan. India has performed exceptionally well during the adverse situation

caused by the Covid-19 crisis. “The workers were rarely available, containers were hardly available, the inland ocean freight almost doubled in some cases. Still, we made it happen,” said one rice exporter. Thailand and Vietnam have an additional advantage, their riceproducing areas are near to the sea, so inland freight is almost negligible. In India, however, rice-producing states, mainly Punjab, Har yana, western Uttar Pradesh and part of Jammu, all are far away from major ports. “This resulted in heavy inland costs, and we became less competitive price-wise,” Kaul said. Another issue is that some of the rice exporting countries like Bangladesh and China have become importing countries due to low production, trends that have further aggravated demand for the staple in the international market.

India calls on Central Asian countries to expand trade through Chabahar Port NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Central Asian countries to benefit from Iran’s southeastern Chabahar Port capacities for expanding their trade in the region, Bloomberg reported. Central Asian countries could unlock their vast economic potential by connecting with the Chabahar port in Iran, Modi said on Thursday in an online meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) hosted by Tajikistan. “Central Asia’s vast economic potential has remained untapped because of radicalization and extremism,” the prime minister added. The Chabahar port is going to open up an important route to connect Afghanistan to Central Asia while bypassing India’s main rival, Pakistan. In May 2016, India, Iran, and Afghanistan signed a trilateral

agreement for the strategically-located Chabahar to give New Delhi access to Kabul and Central Asia. The original plan committed at least $21 billion to the so-called Chabahar–Hajigak corridor, which then included $85 million for Chabahar port development, a $150 million credit line to Iran, an $8 billion India-Iran MOU for Indian industrial investment in a Chabahar special economic zone, and $11 billion for the Hajigak iron and steel mining project awarded to seven Indian companies in central Afghanistan. India is currently the only foreign country that is participating in a major development project in Iran despite the U.S. sanctions. The Chabahar Port development project is the anchor for the expansion of economic relations between the two nations. India is going to install and operate

modern loading and unloading equipment including mobile harbor cranes in Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar. Back in February, the directorgeneral of the political office of India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said his ministry has received the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization’s request for accelerating the importing and installation of equipment for the Chabahar port and India is seriously pursuing the matter. Iranian and Indian officials held a meeting in Chabahar in late January to review the state of mutual cooperation in the development of Shahid Beheshti Port. The strategic port in southeastern Iran is the only ocean port on the Makran coast and it has a special place in the country’s economic affairs.

APM Terminals boosts Reefer service capabilities at Bahrain Port APM Terminals Bahrain, the facilitator of mari me trade in Bahrain has invested in enhancing Reefer service capabili es at Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP). THE HAGUE: Through its multi-purpose and modern port f a c i l i t i e s , A P M Te r m i n a l s Bahrain plays a key role in facilitating external trade and marine services via container terminal activities, General Cargo, RoRo, Cruise and related port services, thus contributing significantly to Bahrain’s economic growth. Along with 24/7 electricity infrastructure and monitoring for all refrigerated cargo at the port, APM Terminals Bahrain customers now have the option of performing pre-trip inspection (PTI) for their reefer containers within the terminal’s facilities. The upgrade is in line with APM Terminals Bahrain’s commitment to enhance its service offerings for reefer containers, which comprise 14% of full imports and 3% of full exports, said the statement from APM Terminals Bahrain. With this, KBSP is equipped to provide all types of reefer related services including plugging and unplugging of electricity, PTI, cleaning, attending to malfunctioning reefers and minor repairs, it stated. CEO and Managing Director Maureen Bannerman said: "We’re continually investing in KBSP infrastructure to meet our customer demands in line with growing industry requirements with an extensive range of ancillary reefer services." "Our one-stop shop for reefer services at KBSP will help our customers in optimising their operations by further extending the shelf-life of their perishable goods. Moreover, this will allow shipping lines avail cost efficiencies," noted Bannerman. With this new service, APM Terminals Bahrain expects to expand beyond PTI and provide attendance services for

malfunctioning reefers in line with the strict guidelines provided by shipping lines, she stated. PTI is an inspection conducted on an empty reefer container prior release/use, to ensure the correct functioning of the cooling unit, temperature control and recording devices. This also includes checking the container for any structural damage and ensuring that the interior of the container is clean and cargo-worthy in all respects. "Provision of these services at KBSP, will also enable our customers to arrange for attendance of any malfunctioning reefers within a shorter timeframe, thus mitigating the risk of damage to perishable cargo," said Bannerman. "This is vital for the growth of Bahrain businesses as it ensures that reefers with perishable products are supported by world-class services while at KBSP, thus contributing to ensuring that their produce reaches the customer in prime condition," she added.

The first shipment of Exhibits for the 4th CIIE departed from Hamburg Germany carried by COSCO SHIPPING HAMBURG: On September 16 local time, the first shipment of exhibits transported by COSCO SHIPPING for the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) were loaded onto M.V. COSCO SHIPPING Libra at the Port of Hamburg, Germany. The exhibits include light helicopters and a supporting training platform developed by RS Helikopter GmbH and are expected to arrive at Shanghai Port on October 15. As the exclusive official carrier for overseas maritime transport as well as home transportation service and special booth construction service provider of the 4th CIIE, COSCO SHIPPING has been offering total logistics services “from the place of departure directly to the exhibition venue”, including exhibit transportation and booth construction, for four consecutive years. RS Helikopter GmbH, headquartered in Munich, Germany, manufactures a type of light helicopter with a coaxial rotor system. Its exhibits include a VA115 single-seat helicopter, a VA250 two-seat helicopter and a special training platform. The great expectation for the Chinese market and the extraordinary platform effect of CIIE has prompted the company to participate in the expo for the first time this year. After receiving the transportation mission from the customer, COSCO SHIPPING Germany started the CIIE service response process and formulated a transportation route plan and a ship pre-schedule, while taking into consideration various factors. Given the recent congestions

at European ports that caused ship delays, COSCO SHIPPING’s service team contacted the customer in time to adjust the loading time to ensure that the cargo would arrive in Shanghai before the deadline required by CIIE. When the exhibits were loaded on board, COSCO SHIPPING Germany held a neat shipping ceremony at the Port of Hamburg. Cargo Terminals on DFC urges for timely completion of project MUMBAI: Investors seeking to set up Private Freight Terminals (PFT) alongside the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) have urged the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to remove the hurdles that are threatening to delay project implementation. With much fanfare, the DFCCIL invited bids in November 2020 for setting up private freight terminals and logistics parks alongside 115 DFC stations. They are envisaged to enable modal shift of cargo from road to rail by routing the freight from the originating places in the hinterland to the DFCs. “The tender was met with limited response due to the risks and uncertainties associated with the projects,” said an executive with an infrastructure firm. The Letter of Award (LoA) issued to three successful bidders stipulate that they have to sign the formal agreement with the DFCCIL in the next few months and construct the private terminals and logistics parks over the next three years. However, the projects are facing hurdles in the initial stage itself with rigid and inflexible clauses in the licence agreement. The project schedules stipulated are

also quite unrealistic, without taking into account the ground realities. With the tight timelines for preparation of feasibility reports and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), the private developers are finding it difficult to properly plan for the projects, the executive said. Timelines set for the freight terminals are often unsynchronised with the commissioning of the DFC along the relevant section, adding to the woes of private developers. Another challenge is the access to the project site, which is mostly through road under bridges, which are designed to suit rural standards and do not follow the minimum norms laid down by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) or the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) for heavy vehicular traffic. Private investors also say that the high land costs and inflexible contractual terms further lowered investor confidence.

“DFCCIL doesn’t provide land. If you’ve to announce the project first and then buy land, only God can save you,” the executive with the infrastructure firm mentioned earlier said. Firms are bound by a condition to complete the private freight terminals in three years, else they will be blacklisted. “DFCCIL must address these issues on priority to instil confidence among private investors,” the executive added. Through the DFCs, the Indian Railways is seeking to bring about a paradigm shift in freight operations with the prime objective of lowering the unit cost of transportation by deploying higher speed and enhanced payload of freight trains.

Sarbananda Sonowal flags-off Dwarf Container Train at JNPT

With this, the first consignment of laden Dwarf containers from Dwarf container depot (DCD) at the port was being moved by train to ICD Kanpur. The port is set to gain steadily from the implementation the Dwarf container train services from JNPT, as the rail movement of Export-Import cargo through double stacked dwarf containers, would offer competitive cost advantage to the Export-Import community, resulting in an increase in port cargo traffic via rail route. As the name suggests, the ‘Dwarf Containers’ are lesser in height by 660 mm than normal ISO containers, giving them a logistical edge. The Low height of dwarf container loaded on trailers can pass through rural, semi urban and urban roads, through limited height subways & level crossing in electrified sections. Furthermore, the ‘Dwarf ’ containers provide a 67% increase in volume when double-stacked and can carry a weight of 71 tons, against 40 tons by an ISO container. In addition, Indian Railways has offered 17% discount on haulage cost compared to double stack ISO container trains, resulting in an overall 33% discount to shippers making Indian Railways competitive. Thus the rail movement of cargo through Dwarf containers has the potential to lower the Export-Import logistics costs, making Indian exports globally competitive Speaking at the inaugural event, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways & Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “The commencement of Dwarf container train services from JNPT is a pivotal step towards streamlining the rail movement of Export Import cargo via double-stacked dwarf containers. This will give the

Export Import community a competitive cost advantage by lowering hinterland logistical costs, while simultaneously enhancing rail-cargo traffic at JNPT. Dwarf containers are port-friendly and can be manufactured in India at a costefficient price point, thereby opening-up opportunities for Make in India.” The move will result in more competitive Exports and enhance export from India. A robust logistics sector can go a long way in boosting India’s quest for being a manufacturing giant and promote ‘Make in India’. This will also help JNPT in increasing throughput, reduce congestions at gate and road; increase DPD which will further reduce cost of logistics for shippers, also improve turnaround time of shipping line containers, and address container shortage issues. In line with this, a location within the JNPT container terminal was identified for the establishment of Dwarf Container Depot, where cargo transfer from ISO containers to dwarf containers would be carried out thereby making availability of empty ISO containers at the Port itself for export repositioning. Currently the trade is facing shortage of ISO containers for exports and this initiative can be a game changer as the turnaround time of containers will come down from month to few days as the import laden ISO containers need not go all the way to the Hinterland. The cargo will be emptied and shifted to dwarf containers and the empty ISO containers would be readily available to the nearby CFS/factory for export stuffing. Pristine Mega Logistics Park Pvt. Ltd, was appointed as the operator through a public tender floated by JNPT for 'management, maintenance and operations of a dedicated dwarf container depot (D-Depot) inside the Port area. The commencement of the dwarf container train services from JNPT will further diversify the Port’s interlinked logistical trade avenues. Furthermore, it will enable the port to offer lower logistics costs to the ExportImport community, increase rail as well as overall container volume throughput, decongest gate and road cargo traffic, promoting direct port delivery.

SCI organized 4th Phase of COVID-19 Vaccination Drive

MUMBAI: The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI), organized it’s 4th COVID–19 vaccination camp in association with Wockhardt Hospital Limited, at the Shipping House, Mumbai, on September 17th, 2021. The Vaccination Drive was inaugurated by Mrs. H.K. Joshi, C&MD, SCI, in the presence of Mr. Atul Ubale – Director (B&T), Capt. B.K. Tyagi – Director (L&PS) and Mr. P.K. Gangopadhyay – Director (P&A). SCI’s various stakeholders as well as the general people of

A-Ward benefited from this drive availing of the 1st or 2nd dose of the Covishield vaccine based on their vaccination schedule. The 4th Vaccination drive at the Shipping House saw a turn-around of about 750 beneficiaries. Bearing in mind the mandatory healthcare protocol, qualified doctors, nurses, support staff and Cardiac Ambulance were available on standby. The vaccination drive is a part of SCI’s endeavour to maximise the vaccination penetration into the society and help India become “COVID Mukt”.
