China a crucial player in logistics industry’s decarbonization: Maersk BEIJING: China will play a crucial role in ensuring that the global logistics industry responds effectively to the climate change challenge, said Ditlev Blicher, Managing Director of Maersk Asia Pacific. “Decarbonizing transport chains and the related energy value chains demand close collaboration and deliberate joint action from shipping companies, logistics providers, researchers, technology developers, consumers, and legislators to transform the industry and move away from fossil-based technology,” Blicher told Xinhua in a recent interview. China has announced that it will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, which is a much shorter period than many developed countries would spend. The country is committed to pursuing greener and high-quality development in all respects. Besides China, the decarbonization agenda has become a focus of attention in the Asia-Pacific region recently,

according to Blicher’s observation. He said that Maersk has heavily invested in rail solutions, which can take potential air freight volumes by rail from China to Europe. The carbon dioxide emissions per kg of rail freight are significantly lower than that of air freight. Maersk last year arranged 210 tailored intercontinental trains from China to European countries, including Germany and France. For both the logistics industry and the company, decarbonization is a strategic imperative, even if they must face challenges such as the cost, distribution, and availability of clean fuel, Maersk said. Around half of the logistics giant’s 200 largest customers have set or are busy setting ambitious science-based or zerocarbon targets for their supply chains. The company announced earlier this year that its first carbon-neutral container vessel will be fully operational by 2023 and that it has the ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050.

TradeLens Digital Shipping Platform Adoption grows in China NANJING: China Unicom Digital T e c h , A . P. M o l l e r – M a e r s k (MAERSKb.CO) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that more than 10 members have joined TradeLens in Chinese Mainland in the first month since its launch on May 10. The new members of the ecosystem to advance trade digitization include industryleading Chinese companies, two port groups and eight intermodal and inland logistics providers. TradeLens is a neutral blockchain-enabled digital container logistics platform, jointly developed by A.P. Moller - Maersk and IBM, and includes foundational carriers CMA CGM and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. China Unicom Digital Tech hosts and operate TradeLens in Chinese Mainland, making it available to global and domestic exporters and importers in China. The TradeLens platform is built by the industry and for the industry and is designed to modernize trade in a number of crucial dimensions. Through the platform, TradeLens customers gain access to end-to-end container transportation visibility, can collaborate with their logistics and trading partners including sharing documents on blockchain, and gain a comprehensive picture of the flow of goods. Partner Access can helps drive synergies across supply chain ecosystem, and TradeLens electronic Bill of Lading helps eliminate costly paperless processes that are prone to human error. A signing ceremony was held during the event signaling the rapid adoption of China enterprises to embarking digital

innovative journey with the platform. TradeLens brings together data from the entire global supply chain ecosystem including shippers, port operators, intermodal operators, customs authorities, and shipping lines. It aims to modernize manual and paper-based documents, replacing them with blockchain enabled digital solutions. Launched in 2018, the TradeLens ecosystem now includes direct integrations with more than 300 organizations – extending to more than 10 ocean carriers and encompassing data from more than 600 ports and terminals. Already it has tracked over 42 million container shipments, close to 2.2 billion events and roughly 20 million published documents. As part of the deployment of TradeLens in the Chinese market, China Unicom hosts the TradeLens platform allowing near real-time data direct from the source with one of the world’s largest economies. Making these data immediately available for use by exporters and importers working with the Chinese markets means clients worldwide can now achieve efficiencies in their operational workflows for documentation and best in class container visibility.

will largely be driven by the bounce back in volumes from 2020, particularly in Q2 2021 vs Q2 2020. Sea freight forwarding growth out to 2025 will be driven by the ongoing recovery in volumes, modal switches from air to sea and new trade agreements generating more trade. Air freight forwarding is set to grow at 14.9% in 2021 and at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2020-2025. Growth in 2021 is largely driven by a recovery of volumes from 2020 and very high freight rates. Longer term growth out to 2025 will be driven by a recovery in global trade and strong growth in air freight intensive sectors like high tech, pharmaceuticals and cross-border e-commerce. The new report also shows that amid all the disruption to the air freight market the top 20 freight forwarders have significantly increased their share of overall volumes, from 65.05% in 2019 to 74.89% in 2020. The top 20 actually increased the air freight volumes they handled in 2020, despite market volumes declining by 12.50%. Coupled with the high air freight rates that persisted through 2020, this led to a very good year for large forwarders. The sea freight market also saw volumes decline from 2019, with 9.95% fewer containers handled in 2020. Nevertheless, capacity constraints and high freight rates enabled the top 20 forwarders to broadly maintain their revenues, even though they carried 7.49% fewer containers than in 2019. The new report provides a view of the future of both the air and sea freight forwarding markets and an outlook for volume, price and capacity development for the rest of 2020. It also examines the performance of freight forwarders in detail and how many of the larger players managed to achieve record margins, with the average freight forwarding margin for 2020 increasing to 7.5%. “A tumultuous 2020 saw major disruptions in supply chains the world

over with the ability of forwarders’ to keep goods moving severely tested by shocks to supply and demand, carriers g r e a t l y r e d u c i n g c a p a c i t y, a n d congestion at logistics gateways, amongst other forces,” said Nick Bailey, Ti’s Head of Research. “Although the market saw one of the sharpest contractions in recent memory in real terms, sky high rates resulted in recordbreaking top-line performance for many for warders. The pandemic also accelerated digitisation and digitalisation efforts across the market as speed, agility and responsiveness proved highly valuable capabilities during the crisis.” The report also examines the developing digital freight forwarding landscape. There is a new market map for the digital landscape and profiles of the major players to show how their capabilities are developing. The latest analysis highlights how they are increasingly competing with established forwarders with a full suite of end-to-end value added services and acquiring key assets to enable this, all underpinned by their technological base. The drive organised aimed at maximum coverage of COVID -19 vaccination to the citizens in line with the Government of India announcement of a Liberalised and Accelerated Phase 3 Strategy of Covid-19 Vaccination. AEPC seeks separate Export Policy CHENNAI: Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has urged the state government to create a separate export policy for Tamil Nadu. AEPC Chairman A Sakthivel, who met State Industries Minister Thangam

Thennarasu in Chennai recently, submitted a memorandum. He requested the minister to establish new parks for manmade fibre (MMF) apparel manufacturing, sewing and heavy textile machinery and textile garment accessories. Such parks could

be set up in southern districts like Madurai, Tuticorin and Tirunelveli to generate more jobs for the people in the regions, he said. AEPC also suggested setting up the parks under the central government scheme of mega investment textiles park (Mitra).

Second Covid-19 wave obstructs mango and vegetable exports from Varanasi VARANASI: The exports of fresh green vegetables and fr uits, and mangoes in particular, from Varanasi and surrounding districts have been shaken up in the second wave of Covid19 pandemic that led to stopping of all international flight operations from the city. Procurement of goods -including farm products- is not proving possible in quantities up to 20 tons for export in one consignment, which has made it difficult

to operate cargo flights from LBS International Airport, Varanasi. The export of green vegetables and mangos from the orchards of district’s Rajatalab, Sevapuri and also from neighboring districts has stopped. Producer organizations of the region had explored markets in the Gulf countries for their fresh vegetables in April 2020 and had succeeded in sending 3 tons of green vegetables including

gourd, cucumber and chilly to London amidst lockdown during the first wave of Covid. However, this time no international flights are operating. Cargo flights for exporting goods and perishable items are available either from Lucknow or Delhi. If vegetable consignments are sent via Lucknow and Delhi, the cost of transportation will increase the price of produce.

Iron ore exports: India puts an end to decades-old pacts with Japan, Korea NEW DELHI: The Government is understood to have not renewed a longterm agreement (LTA) for supplying iron ore to Japanese steel mills and South Korean major Posco after upon its March e x p i r y, a p p a r e n t l y i n v i e w o f t h e uncertainty over investment plans of steel mills from these countries in India. Shortage of the key raw material for steelmaking in India is also seen to be a reason for the decision. Iron ore supply agreements with Korea and Japan have been in existence for around six decades; these got renewed uninterruptedly as New Delhi’s goodwill gesture to the two Asian countries. The Union cabinet last renewed the contract on April 25, 2018; the contract was

effective till March 31, 2021. State-owned miner NMDC, which supplies iron ore to Japan and Korea, has not dispatched any material to these countries so far in the current fiscal, sources said. Japan and Korea are the only two geographies where NMDC exports the key steel-making raw material while the rest is consumed domestically. In 2019-20, NMDC exported 2.44 million tonne (MT) iron ore and in 2020-21, it came down by around 6% to around 2.3 MT. Sources said there have been no exports so far in the current fiscal. NMDC used to export the ore at a concessional rate in lieu of reduced export duty at 10% against 30% for private iron ore exporters and some railway freight

concessions. Another PSU, MMTC, is the canalising agency. India has been a regular exporter of iron ore to the Japanese steel mills (since 1963) and Posco, South Korea (since 1973). In the last renewal in 2018, a total of 5.5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) of highgrade iron ore export was allowed. Reacting to the development, private sector steelmaker JSPL’s managing director VR Sharma said, “The government has taken a very good step by stopping the export of iron ore to Japan and Korea. The local industry has been suffering very badly since long. There is no iron ore available for Chhattisgarh steel companies. The country has to meet out the local demand first.”

E-commerce Exports on the rise MUMBAI: One of the few takeaways of the global pandemic is that it has highlighted the importance of increased digitisation and e-commerce as means to improve economic well-being and to create opportunities for Indian micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). With the government of India looking at an exports-led recovery, India’s proposed Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2021-26 suggests a number of important steps to empowering SMEs. Yet, the government can further strengthen the FTP with a renewed focus on B2C e-commerce exports. E-commerce has already demonstrated immense potential in enabling exporters to reach foreign customers more effectively by taking advantage of existing operational and supply chain efficiencies offered by e-commerce platforms. As more consumer facing Indian businesses go through a process of digitisation, India can reap significant financial benefits and create more robust export-driven growth. Increased use of B2C e-commerce

exports will allow Indian MSMEs to better compete with products and services offered by foreign competitors. To do so, the Indian government needs to create a knowledge infrastructure to better utilise e-commerce for export led growth. Forex reserves rises to lifetime high of $608.08 MUMBAI: India's foreign exchange reserves rose by $3.074 billion during the week ended June 11. According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) weekly statistical supplement, the reserves increased to $608.081 billion from $605.008 billion reported for the week ended June 4.

India's forex reser ves comprise foreign currency assets (FCAs), gold reserves, special drawing rights (SDRs), and the country's reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On a weekly basis, FCAs, the largest component of the forex reserves, edged higher by $2.567 billion to $563.457 billion.

Similarly, the value of the country's gold reserves rose by $496 million to $38.101 billion. However, the SDR value slipped by $1 million at $1.512 billion. But, the country's reserve position with the IMF inched higher by $11 million to $5.011 billion.

DFC to be commissioned from New Palanpur NEW DELHI: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) will fully commission the nearly 750km stretch from New Palanpur to Marwar and Rewari junction from Thursday. The goods trains will move at an average of 75 km hour with a maximum speed of 100 km per hour. The DFCC was so far operational between Marwar and Rewari. The officials said that the goods train which usually took 20 hours to cover the distance will be able to complete the journey of 750 km in just 10 hours. The officials said that goods train will get on the dedicated freight corridor from Karjoda station which is connected to New

Palanpur station and then move on DFCC for 750 km till Rewari. For onward journey, it will be moving on regular Indian Railways track. DFCC officials said that this will also reduce wagon turnaround which will increase utilization. Distance between two stations of Dedicated Freight Corridor is 40 km where as in the Indian Railways it’s 5-6 km and there will be no level crossing will be there along DFCC route. The officials of DFCC said that the track will connect New Palanpur station to Mumbai ports and will be fully commissioned by June next year. Jitendra Agarwal, deputy chief project (traffic), said that with the commissioning of the track from Palanpur to Rewari, all ports

including Mundra, Kandla , Tuna, Pipavav and Navlakhi will be directly connected with DFCCCIL. The officials said that moving the goods trains on the DFCC will release the capacity on the regular track. This will speed up the movement of passenger trains which also had stoppages due to movement of good trains. The officials said that the section is fully electrified with 2×25 KV charging which is just 25 kv charging in IR. Also the train length of DFCC will be 1.5 km and double stake. The officials said that soon they intend to start RO-RO service (roll on and roll off service for transporters) shortly from New Palanpur to Rewari.

MSC speaks at IAPH World Ports Conference in Antwerp GENEVA: MSC Mediterranean Shipping company will see two prominent speakers taking the stage at this year’s World Ports Conference. The virtual event, hosted by the International Association of Ports and Harbours in conjunction with IHSMarkit and Port of Antwerp, runs from 21-25 June. On 23 June at 16:00 CEST MSC CEO Soren Toft will deliver a keynote on the essential evolution of container shipping and logistics. While COVID-19 has brought some companies and industries to a standstill, container shipping & logistics has prevailed as an absolutely essential sector that continues to connect the world and make global trade affordable. In his keynote, Soren Toft will give a fresh perspective on the agenda priorities for the sector to ensure it keeps on evolving to meet the needs of global trade in a digitalising and decarbonising landscape. His keynote will be followed by a discussion with Port of Antwerp CEO Jacques Vandermeiren around how shipping and ports can collaborate in keeping pace with these trends. Prior to that, on the same day at 15:15 CEST, Andre Simha, MSC Chief Digital & Information Ofcer, will be in a one-toone session with Eric Johnson, Technology Editor at Journal of Commerce, on the recently launched MSC electronic bill of lading. What can digitisation of trade documents do to the future of shipping? What are the opportunities and how should ports prepare themselves for this change? How can ports work with terminal operators, ship agents, forwarders and customs to adapt their processes to improve the speed of release of cargo? These are just some of the questions to be addressed in what promises to be a very insightful interview.

Shaping the port landscape The 2021 event will focus on exploring how the port landscape is changing as a result of the evolving maritime & logistics sector landscape, including the acceleration of decarbonisation and digitalization and the ongoing disruptive impact of the global pandemic. Besides being a strategic location for MSC in Europe, Antwerp means a lot to the company as it is where it all started for MSC. Digital Container matching landside may be key to easing SE Asia port congestion, feel Industry Experts LONDON: Amid worsening port congestion in South-east Asia, carriers are seeking new digital solutions to improve landside container logistics. While things at Yantian may be improving, the bottleneck of schedule delays and cargo backlogs could still take weeks to unravel, and reports surfaced this week of new congestion in Singapore. Ocean Alliance members CMA CGM and Cosco each plan to skip a scheduled call at the major transhipment hub. Elsewhere in South-east Asia, gateways such as Thailand’s Laem Chabang are also grappling with deviating shipping schedules and the ripples from China’s congestion, all putting further pressure on the scarcity of empty containers. Therefore, says Alvin Ea, Co-Founder and CEO of Singapore start-up Haulio, the need for efficient landside container logistics and fast truck turnaround times has never been greater. “As the port had to reallocate resources to ship-side activities to lower container dwell time and vessel turnaround times, Singapore has seen a surge in interterminal haulage demand.” he told Founded in 2017, Haulio operates a digital platform matching hauliers with containers for first-mile moves between a port and a customer’s warehouse, boasting more than 90% of the city’s hauliers on the platform. Originally it operated only in Singapore, but Haulio expanded to Thailand last year, snagging CMA CGM as a customer. Mr Ea said: “In Thailand, there have been more erratic

peaks and troughs in the movement of boxes from Laem Chabang Terminal to Lat Krabang ICD, given the uncertain schedules, and this led to the need for hauliers to pool capacity and volumes to better match return round trips – something Haulio Thailand aims to facilitate digitally.” Furthermore, he said, container shortages and schedule delays at both Singapore and Laem Chabang had caused chassis detention periods to worsen, leading to a tightening of haulage resources, which, in turn, forced the vicious congestion cycle to continue: depot and terminal backlogs increasing as a result. “However, having better visibility of demand forecast and resource management can ease congestion, as it allows information and resource pooling to be facilitated further,” added Mr Ea. “Haulio’s solutions include integration with the port community system to provide real-time information of vessel berthing schedules, as well as live track and trace of inland container haulage beyond the port.” And digital container matching could also help alleviate some equipment shortages, he added. “We are encouraging container reuse and exchange between key stakeholders by providing data insights to facilitate the trigger for a match, in collaboration with several other digital platforms across the region, such as Avantida and Matchbox Exchange. “Such innovation can not only reduce carbon emissions, but also the need to queue at depots, which can ease the congestion in the chain.”
