Strong performance by A.P. Moller - Maersk in Q2 despite COVID-19 impact COPENHAGEN: In Q2 2020, A.P. Moller Maersk improved profitability across all businesses through agile capacity deployment, cost mitigation initiatives and adaption to changed customer needs. The earnings improvement was achieved despite the sharp drop in global volumes following the COVID-19 crisis. “As expected, the second quarter was materially impacted by COVID-19 and our focus remained on protecting our employees from the vir us, ser ving our customers by keeping our global network of ships sailing and our ports, warehouses and inland transportation networks operating, and helping the societies we are part of fight the virus,” says Søren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk and continues: “I am pleased that we despite the headwinds, continued our track record of improving earnings and free cash flow. Our operating earnings improved by 25%, marking the e i g h t h c o n s e c u t i v e q u a r t e r w i t h y e a r- o n - y e a r improvements, driven by strong cost performance across all our businesses, lower fuel prices and higher freight rates in Ocean and increased profitability in Logistics & Services. With a strong result and a strong balance sheet we are well positioned to financially and strategically come out stronger of the crisis.” Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) improved to USD 1.7bn, which is higher than the initial expectations in the trading update from June of an EBITDA slightly above USD 1.5bn. The EBITDA margin increased from 14.1% in Q2 last year to 18.9%. Revenue decreased by 6.5% to USD 9bn, driven by a volume decrease of 16% in Ocean and 14% in gateway terminals. In Ocean, the lower volumes were partly offset by agile capacity deployment of the global network leading to lower costs, together with lower fuel prices and higher freight rates. In Logistics and Services, profitability increased through cost measures, favorable airfreight contribution and the integration of Performance Team, while Terminals & Towage showed their resilience by compensating lower volumes through cost measures. The continued focus on improving returns showed further results with cash return on invested capital (CROIC), last twelve months improving to 12.5% from 8.9% and ROIC, last twelve months increasing to 4.7% from 1.4% in the previous year.
The net interest-bearing debt was USD 11.6bn compared to USD 11.7bn by the end of 2019, as free cash flow of USD 1.5bn allowed for share buy-back, dividends and acquisitions in the first six months of 2020. The focus on a strong cost and capital allocation discipline will continue, and more additional cost and structural measures across the business will be taken to offset the negative impact of COVID-19 and fund the next stages of the transformation. Guidance for 2020 A.P. Moller - Maersk suspended the full-year guidance for 2020 (EBITDA before restructuring and integration costs of around USD 5.5bn) on 20 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, given material uncertainties and lack of visibility related to the global demand for container transport and logistics. Despite the uncertainties related to COVID -19, A.P. Moller - Maersk reinstates its full-year guidance for 2020 and now expects EBITDA to be between USD 6.0bn-7.0bn, before restructuring and integration costs. The global demand growth for containers is still expected to contract in 2020 due to COVID-19 and for Q3 2020 volumes are expected to progressively recover with a current expectation of a mid-single digit contraction. Organic volume growth in Ocean is expected to be in line with or slightly lower than the average market growth. The outlook and guidance for 2020 is subject to significant uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic and does not take into consideration a material second lockdown phase. The guidance is also subject to uncertainties related to freight rates, bunker prices and other external factors. The accumulated guidance on gross capital expenditures excl. acquisitions (CAPEX) for 2020-2021 is still expected to be USD 3.0bn-4.0bn, with steps being taken to reduce CAPEX in 2020. High cash conversion (cash flow from operations compared to EBITDA) is still expected for both years.

Attention of Importers/Exporters, Custom Brokers, Trade and other stakeholders is invited to the above mentioned subject. Board had undertaken an exercise towards standardization of Unit Quantity Codes (UQCs) for purposes of export / import declarations filed on EDI. It was noted that many importers and exporters use UQCs like BGS, BTL, BOX, CTN, GGR, HPT, KPC, ODD and DRM etc. which are neither stipulated in the Customs Tariff Act nor prevalent in the normal business transactions. These nonconvertible/inappropriate UQCs lead to a poor quality of data capture and related implications. As a first measure, declaration of quantities in Statistical UQCs (SQCs) as prescribed under the Tariff Act have been made mandatory in both imports (since Feb 2019) and exports (since Feb 2020) for every item in addition to the quantities declared in the commercial units as per the invoice. The SQC declarations are being captured in the Single Window table of the Bills of Entry and Shipping Bills. In order to further improve data quality, even among the commercial UQCs declared for the items as per the invoice, henceforth only codes as mentioned in the Annexure would be permitted in BEs/SBs. Declarations in any other UQC will not be accepted. The above changes will come into effect from 20.08.2020. Difficulty, if any, faced in implementation of this public notice may be brought to the notice of the Addl. /Joint Commissioner (Appraising Main (Import) through email at appraisingmain.jnch@gov.in. Consignees are requested to obtain the Delivery Orders on presentation of duly endorsed Original Bills of Lading and on payment of applicable charges within the free time to avoid detention charges being levied. Consignees are requested to note that all FCL containers will be moved enbloc from the terminal to the nominated NEW MAERSK CFS (ANNEX CFS) from where the delivery will be effected. Separate IGM will be lodged with respective ICD's, Mumbai Customs for ICD's and Mumbai Port Delivery. Carrier or its agents will not be responsible for any delay in CY-CFS movement due to port congestion. Consignees are also requested to note that carrier and / or their agents are not bound to send individual Cargo Arrival Notice (CAN) regarding the arrival of the vessel or goods. Incase of Perishable goods, if not cleared within 72 hours the cargo may be listed for auction at the sole discretion of the Customs Authorities, with all costs, risks and responsibility on the consignee. As per Indian Customs Regulations any / all containers / lying uncleared for more than 30 days are listed for the auction under Sec. 48 of Indian Customs Act 1962 under notice to Consignee by the Custodian, as per address stated in their respective Bill of Lading. The same will be auctioned or destuffed without any further information / notice to the consignee. However the Line reserves their right to recover / claim all cost or charges on such shipments from the consignee. Our surveyor at the CFS is Master Marine Services Pvt. Ltd. Add : Gr. George, Deputy Chairman, Chennai Port Trust has joined Cochin Port Trust as Deputy Chairman on 18 August 2020. Shri A.K. Mehera, Deputy Chairman, Cochin Port Trust has been transferred to Kolkata Dock System, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, Kolkata. An officer having more than 3 decades’ experience in the Major Ports sector, Shri Cyril C. George (native of Thodupuzha) is a holder of MSW, MBA (HR) and LLB. He started his career as Labour Officer in Kandla Port Trust in
1987. Prior to Chennai Port Trust he also se r ve d in Mor mugao Port Tr ust (as Deputy Chairman), Kandla Dock Labour Board (as Deputy Chairman) and Cochin Port Trust (as Secretary). Iran to become a Major Transit Route for India, Russia TEHRAN: Iran has reached agreements with Russia and India for transiting the mentioned countries’ commodities through its rail network, Tehran Times reported quoting the Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) as saying recently. “In the field of rail transportation, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways has had good achievements, including the agreements reached with India and Russia, based on which huge transit cargoes from these two countries will pass through the Iranian railway corridor,” Saeed Rasouli said recently in a meeting with the parliament’s Development Committee members.
“All efforts are being made in the railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran to make the best possible use of today’s railway capacities; In this regard, the issue of promoting the share of rail transportation is seriously pursued and the prepared programs will be presented to the parliament in a report”, he added. The deputy transport minister further said out of the total amount of cargo transported in the last Iranian calendar year (ended on March 19), which was 513 million tons, 208 million tons were transported through rail routes. The official emphasized that serious measures should be taken in order to increase the share of the railway in the
country’s cargo transportation, including the development of the national rail network in less-developed regions and also zeroing the value-added tax in this sector. Back in July, Rasouli had said that Iran can use its eastern railway corridor for transiting commodities between Russia and India and also among CIS countries. Mentioning the beginning of the tracklaying operations for Chabahar-Zahedan railway, Rasouli said: “So far we haven’t been able to use the full capacities of Chabahar port since it wasn’t connected to the railway network, but with the completion of this line the port can become a transit hub in the region.”
India-Japan-Australia supply chain in the works to counter China NEW DELHI: India, Japan and Australia have begun discussions on launching a trilateral Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) to reduce dependency on China. The initiative, first proposed by Japan, is now taking shape. Dates are being worked out to hold the first meeting of the commerce and trade ministers of the three countries by next week. Japan through its Ministry of E c o n o m y, Tr a d e a n d I n d u s t r y approached India recently and pressed on the urgency to take the initiative forward, according to people in the know. Tokyo was in favour of l a u n c h i n g S C R I b y N o v e m b e r, sources said.
Recently the India government appears to have taken the call at the highest levels to become part of the global supply chain, thus emerging as an alternative to China. The subject was also one of the key themes of PM Modi’s Independence Day speech on Saturday, where he said that businesses have started viewing India as a possible “hub for supply chains” and that now India must also “make for the world”. The two -fold objective of the Japanese proposal is to attract foreign direct investment to turn the IndoPacific into an “economic powerhouse” and to build a mutually complementary relationship among partner countries.
The idea, sources said, was to also throw open the initiative to the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) after India-Japan-Australia understanding on the matter. To begin with, the aim is to work out a plan to build on the existing bilateral supply chain networks. India and Japan, for instance, have an Indo - Japan Industrial Competitiveness partnership, which deals with locating Japanese companies in India. SCRI is a direct response to individual companies and economies concerned about Chinese political behaviour and the disruption that could lead to supply chains, according to the sources.
Digha-Gopalpur Coastal Highway to act as economic corridor between Paradip & Dhamra Ports : Dharmendra Pradhan NEW DELHI: Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan has said that the National Infrastructure Pipeline will not only revolutionize the creation of infrastructure in the country but also would pull India out of the economic impact of COVID-19.
Citing the case of Digha-Gopalpur coastal highway under construction in Odisha, the Minister tweeted that it would act as an economic corridor between the two major ports of Paradip and Dhamra. He said, besides facilitating transportation of agri goods and fishery products, the coastal
highway would play a crucial role in the supply chain during natural calamities like cyclones and floods. In addition, the 451-kilometre long coastal highway would be a game-changer in transforming the fortunes of coastal Odisha besides making it one of India’s prime tourist attractions, he added.
DGFT permits exports of certain non-woven fabrics used for making masks, coveralls NEW DELHI: The Government on Tuesday allowed exports of certain nonwoven fabrics used to make masks and coveralls with a view to push outbound shipments. However, export of melt blown fabric of any GSM (grams per
square metre) continues to be banned. A notification dated July 13 was amended "to the extent that only melt blown fabric of any GSM...is prohibited for export. All other non-woven fabrics of any GSM (including GSM 25-70 which
were earlier prohibited) are freely allowed for exports," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification. The export ban was earlier imposed in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

The port is part of Belgium's essential infrastructure, playing a crucial role in supplying Belgium and Europe. Following the news of added measures, the Port of Antwerp Covid-19 Taskforce reconvened. The port will remain 100% operational during the second wave of the coronavirus. This is thanks to the daily efforts and commitment of all its staff. At the meeting of the reconvened taskforce, a number of focus points were set out regarding the additional measures imposed by the National Security Council and the province of Antwerp. The participants in the taskforce believe it remains essential to monitor the situation, and ensure that the port stays operational. At the meeting of the taskforce, it was once again stressed that keeping the port operational is a joint priority, to maintain our country's supplies.
Despite the impact of the coronavirus crisis on global production and logistics chains and a pandemicdriven drop in demand, the economic damage for the port remained limited. Total transhipments fell by 4.9% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2019. After a strong first quarter, the port witnessed an expected decline in the transhipment of all flows of goods,
with the exception of the container sector. For the third quarter, while the Port of Antwerp is still expecting blank sailings, it is also seeing the first signs of recovery and an upturn in the European economy.

Global Logistics Company DP World acquires Transworld Acquisition will bolster DP World’s Logistics portfolio in India DUBAI: Unifeeder, through its Unifeeder ISC (Indian Subcontinent) platform, a majority owned subsidiary of DP World Limited, announced the acquisition of Transworld Feeders FZCO, Avana Logistek Limited, including its subsidiary Avana Global FZCO, and Transworld Feeders Pvt. Ltd., the containerised Indian coastal and Export Import Feeder shipping operations of Shreyas Shipping and Logistics Limited, excluding vessels and bulk operations. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals. Transworld Feeders FZCO and Avana Global FZCO are leading independent feeder and NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers) operators, offering container feedering services and regional trade solutions connecting a wide range of ports in the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and Far East through their dense network. The central hub port at Jebel Ali (UAE) plays a pivotal role for a large part of the services. Both the companies have a strong presence within trade routes west of the Indian Subcontinent and complement the recent acquisition of Feedertech and Perma Shipping, which have a strong market position in the trade routes towards the east of the Indian Subcontinent. Transworld Feeders Pvt. Ltd. and Avana Logistek Limited maintain a comprehensive coverage of all main ports, terminals and inland destinations in India. Avana Logistek Limited also provides first mile and last mile delivery solutions within the Indian domestic market. Both are market leaders in providing logistics solutions to cargo owners, traders, forwarders, and shipping lines. Further, they will both complement and expand our ability to offer a broader range of India focused solutions. These new entities will continue to operate an asset-light structure as per the Unifeeder model, which delivers greater flexibility and efficiency for customers.
