PM chairs meeting to review preparedness of Master Plan for Multi-Modal connectivity in Industrial hubs NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently chaired a meeting with key Cabinet Ministers, including Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman and Hardeep Singh Puri, to work out a master plan to improve multimodal connectivity in industrial hubs to cut the cost of logistics, officials aware of the development said. “Key Transport Ministries—Rail, Shipping, Roads, Aviation—as well as other Ministries such as Petroleum and Natural Gas, power, steel, telecom, renewable energy are part

of this plan, with Trade and Industry Ministry spreading it,” one of the officials said. “Government departments have been told that there should be no gaps in any mode of transportation in the industrial hubs—for instance, where coal or steel is being produced,” the official said. “All transport departments have to work together and logistics have to be worked out in key industrial hubs to make the system more efficient. MSC enhances Indian Subcontinent & U.S. East Coast connections GENEVA: MSC is pleased to announce the enhancement of its Indus service with a new port call at Colombo in Sri Lanka. The first vessel on the revised rotation will be Seamax Bridgeport, ETA Abu Dhabi on 23 August 2020. As a major international transshipment hub, the addition of Colombo will reinforce our offering for cargo shippers in Southeast India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh and facilitate new business in these markets. The new rotation will offer our U.S. customers the possibility to import cargo from anywhere in India on a single MSC service, boosting predictability for effective supply chain planning. Cont’d. Exports of agricultural commodities during March to June 2020 increased by 23.24% compared to corresponding period in 2019 NEW DELHI: Self-reliant agriculture is critical for the goal of an A t m a n i r b h a r B h a r a t . Fo r t h i s , agricultural export is extremely important as besides earning precious foreign exchange for the country, the exports help farmers / producers / exporters to take advantage of wider international market and increase their income. Exports have also resulted in increased production in agriculture sector by increasing area coverage and productivity. As per WTO’s Trade Statistics, share of India’s agricultural exports and imports in the world agriculture trade in 2017 was 2.27% and 1.90%, respectively. Even during the difficult time of pandemic lockdown, India took care to not to disturb the world food supply chain and continued to export. The exports of Agri commodities during

March 2020 to June 2020 were Rs. 25552.7 Crore against an export of Rs. 20734.8 Crore during the same period in 2019, showing a sharp increase of 23.24%. The agricultural exports as a percentage of India’s agricultural GDP has increased from 9.4 % in 2017-18 to 9.9 % in 2018-19. While the agricultural imports as a percentage of India’s agricultural GDP has declined from 5.7 % to 4.9 % indicating exportable surplus and decreased dependence on import of agricultural products in India. The Export strategy focuses on export promotion of fast evolving niche markets of Wellness food/ Health conscious food/nutraceuticals; Development of “Brand India” in campaign mode to help penetration into new foreign markets and of new products which automatically

translates into higher value realisation; Gulf countries have been identified as focus destination to increase the market share which is a strong market for India though presently India caters to only 10-12% share of their total imports. A product market matrix has been made containing list of products of strength which could be expanded in new geographies and list of known markets which can be introduced with newer products. It is also noted that Horticulture is a growing sub-sector. India holds 2nd position in production of fruits and vegetables. It exports 8.23 Lakh MT (LMT) of fruits worth Rs 5,638 crore and 31.92 LMT of vegetables worth Rs 5,679 Crores annually. Grapes occupy the premier position in fresh fr uit exports followed by Mango, Pomegranate, Banana, and Oranges.

Govt extends anti-dumping duty for 3 months on caustic soda from China, Korea NEW DELHI: India extended antidumping duty on imports of caustic soda from China and Korea till November 2020. The duty was extended after considering the recommendations of the commerce Ministry's investigation arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), that had requested for extension of the existing

anti-dumping duty on the chemical imported from China and Korea. "The anti-dumping duty imposed under this notification, with respect to People s Republic of China and Korea RP, shall remain in force up to and inclusive of the 17th November, 2020, unless revoked, superseded or amended earlier," the Central Board of

Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said in a notification. The duty was first imposed in 2012 on a different set of countries to protect local industry from cheap foriegn imports. The duty was then imposed on material coming from China and Korea in 2015 for a period of five years.

Thermal coal, coking coal imports at Major Ports dip 31% to 37 MT in Apr-July: IPA NEW DELHI: Hit by disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, both thermal and coking coal imports at India’s 12 major ports dropped 31 per cent to 36.7 million tonnes (MT) in AprilJuly 2020 over the the same period a year ago, according to the Indian Ports” Association (IPA). Thermal coal imports dropped 30 per cent to 23.19 MT and coking coal shipments fell 32.26 per cent to 13.51 MT during this period. Coal volumes at these 12 major ports under the control of the Centre declined for the fourth straight month in July 2020. These ports had handled 33.11 MT of thermal coal and 13.51 MT of coking coal in the April-July period of the previous financial year. The IPA, which maintains cargo data handled by these ports, in its latest report said “percentage variation from the previous year” in thermal coal and coking coal handling was 30 per cent and 32.26 per cent, respectively.

Together, thermal and coking coal handling saw a decline of 30.83 per cent at these ports in the April-July period at 36.7 MT. Thermal coal is the mainstay of India”s energy programme as 70 per cent of power generation is dependent on the dry fuel, while coking coal is used mainly for steel making. India is the third-largest producer of coal after China and the US, and has 299 billion tonnes of resources and 123 billion tonnes of proven reserves, which may last for over 100 years. These 12 major ports had handled 705 MT of cargo in the last financial year. These ports had together handled 236.01 MT of cargo during April-July 2018-19, the ports body said. Ports like Chennai, Cochin and Kamrajar saw their cargo volumes nosedive over 30 per cent during AprilJuly, while JNPT and Kolkata suffered a drop of over 20 per cent. India has 12 Major Ports under the control of the Central Government —

Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V O Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia). These ports handle about 61 per cent of the country”s total cargo traffic. These ports handled 705 MT of cargo last fiscal. While Chennai port saw 32.53 per cent decline in cargo handling to 11.08 MT, Kamarajar (Ennore) port suffered a drop of 35.64 per cent to 7 MT in April-July, as per IPA data. Cochin Port saw a dip of 32.78 per cent to 7.76 MT during the period. Cargo handling at JNPT port slipped 27.69 per cent to 16.94 MT, while the same at Kolkata declined 26.09 per cent to 16.05 MT. Mumbai port logged a fall of 19.79 per cent to 15.85 MT. In the wake of the COVID -19 outbreak, sharp declines were witnessed in handling of containers and POL (petroleum, oil and lubricant) among other commodities like coal.

India’s cotton exports likely to rise 19% in 2019-20: The Cotton Association of India NEW DELHI: India’s annual cotton exports in the crop year (Oct-Sept) are likely to rise 19% over 2019-20, a trade body said. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has increased its estimate of exports. “There is an increase of 3 lakh bales in the estimate of cotton export for the season made now compared to the CAI’s previous estimate of 47 lakh bales made during the last month on account of more favourable conditions for exports of cotton from India. This export

estimate of 50 lakh bales is higher by 8 lakh bales compared to that estimated for the 2018-19 crop year. Upto 31st July, 43 lakh bales are estimated to have been shipped and shipment of further 7 lakh bales is estimated to take place during the months of August and September 2020,” a release from the CAI said. The CAI has increased its estimate of cotton imports by 1 lakh bales to 16 lakh bales compared to its previous imports estimate of 15 lakh bales. “This import estimate of 16 lakh bales is

just half of the previous year’s import estimate of 32 lakh bales. This decrease in the imports estimate for the season compared to the last year is mainly on account of easy availability of cheaper cotton in domestic market and relatively costlier imported cotton due to depreciation in the value of Indian Rupee. Upto 31st July, cotton imports are estimated at 15 lakh bales and the remaining 1 lakh bales are estimated to arrive Indian Ports during the months of August and September 2020,” CAI said.

Indian Oil PSUs to stop chartering Tankers with China links NEW DELHI: State-run oil companies have decided to stop chartering tankers owned or operated by Chinese companies even if the vessels are registered under thirdcountr y flags. The move follows regulations issued last month to curb business dealings with China. The oil companies already have a first-right-of-refusal clause in favour of Indian flag vessels in their global tenders. Under this clause, Indian

tankers can be given contracts if they match the winning bid of foreign vessels. The latest move throws vessels with any China connection out of the ring. For limited tenders, the companies will not invite bids from Chinese shipping entities previously registered with them. Chinese vessels have a small share of the number of ships chartered by the oil companies. As such, the ban will not have much impact on oil companies’ trade. A Bloomberg report said

the oil companies are also planning to ask oil traders and suppliers not to send shipments to India using Chinese vessels. The power Ministry had earlier banned import of Chinese equipment needed for generation, transmission and distribution projects that are manufactured in India. It also laid down a strict quality and malware testing norm for equipment allowed to be imported.

India invites investments from UAE for Highways, Defence, Ports, Airports NEW DELHI: India has invited investments from United Arab Emirates in areas including logistics, food parks, highways, ports, airports, renewable energy and defence, a statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry said. The two countries also discussed a joint strategy to offset the economic and social impact of the covid-19 pandemic on both countries. The discussions – between Indian foreign Minister Subrahmanyam

Jaishankar and his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan – took place under the aegis of the 13th Joint Commission Meeting on Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation, it said. “Both sides expressed optimism over the growing trade, economic and investment cooperation between the two countries. The Indian side invited further investments from UAE in key sectors of the Indian economy such as infrastructure including logistics, food

parks, highways, ports, airports, renewable energy and defence. The UAE side conveyed appreciation for the significant contributions made by the Indian expatriate community and expressed its willingness to further strengthen links in energy and food security,” it said. Given the covid-19 pandemic, the meeting was held via video link but both sides agreed that the next session would be held in Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Bengal Govt planning to grant industry status to Logistics sector KO L K ATA : T h e We s t B e n g a l Gover nment is contemplating to grant industry status to the State’s USD 20 billion logistics sector for seamless development of various infrastructure projects, an official said recently. The state is working on framing a logistics policy and it may require about Rs 1,000 crore to implement it in the short term, PTI reported. The Union Government too has been formulating a national policy aiming to reduce logistics cost from the

present 14 per cent of Gross Domestic Product to less than 10 per cent by 2022. “The status of industry will help the logistics sector smoothly develop infrastructure. The conversion of agricultural land to develop logistics related infrastructure will be easier. Getting access to land banks, state funding, incentives and single window support will also be easier,” the official said. On the proposed logistics policy, he said, “The West Bengal Government may need a funding requirement of USD

120- 150 million (Rs 1,000 crore approx) to lay the initial groundwork to implement it in the short term.” The authorities have suggested to set up a nodal agency, L ogistics Development Council, with representation from both the industry and the Government, for implementing the policy, the official said. The state is also contemplating to earmark 500 acre of land for logistics development, out of which 100 acre may be brought out from rehabilitated land with multimodal connectivity.

India’s seafood exports pegged at 12,89,651 MT in FY 2019-20 NEW DELHI: India shipped 12,89,651 MT of seafood worth Rs 46,662.85 crore (USD 6.68 billion) during 2019-20, largely cushioning the adverse impact of the COVID -19 pandemic, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) said recently. Frozen shrimp remained the major export item in terms of quantity and value followed by frozen fish while the USA and China turned out to be the major importers of India’s seafood. During the FY 2019-20, the export improved in rupee term by 0.16 per cent, but the quantity and US dollar value declined by 7.39 per cent and 0.74 per cent, respectively, MPEDA said in a statement. In 2018-19, India had exported 13, 92,559 MT of seafood worth Rs 46,589.37 crore (USD 6,728.50 million).

K S Srinivas, Chairman, MPEDA, said India managed to export 12,89,651 MT of seafood, despite the sluggish demand in its major export markets caused by the pandemic, whichled to cancellation of several orders, reduced and delayed payments, slowdown of cargo movements and difficulty in getting new orders. The decline in sea catch along the west coast due to reduced fishing days has also been a reason for the shortfall in quantity, he said. “We missed the 7-billion-dollar target, though not by a fair distance. However, exports are now likely to witness an uptick as lockdowns have been eased globally and there is an increased sale of value added products in retail chains. MPEDA’s vision is to take Indian seafood exports to Rs one

lakh crore by 2030,” Srinivas said. Frozen shrimp, which earned Rs 34,152.03 crore (USD 4,889.12 million), retained its position as the most significant item in the basket of seafood exports, accounting for a share of 50.58 per cent in quantity and 73.21 per cent of the total dollar earnings. Shrimp exports during the period increased by 6.04 per cent in dollar value and 6.20 per cent in quantity. The overall export of frozen shrimps during 2019-20 was pegged at 6,52,253 MT, which fetched foreign exchange worth USD 4,889.12 million. USA, the largest market, imported (2, 85,904 MT) of frozen shrimp, followed by China (1, 45,710 MT), European Union (74,035 MT), Japan (38,961 MT), South East Asia (34,439 MT), and the Middle East (32,645 MT).

DFC of 4,000-km planned to connect industries in East, West to South via Andhra, Odisha Ports NEW DELHI: The Railways will build nearly 4,000-km dedicated freight corridor connecting industrial areas in the eastern and western parts of the country to southern India through major ports in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, a document on the planned corridors says. The proposed DFCs are part of the next big ticket infrastructure projects of the Railways. These DFCs are — 1,115-km East Coast corridor from Kharagpur ( We s t B e n g a l ) t o V i j a y a w a d a (Andhra Pradesh); the East-West corridor which comprises 1,673 km

connecting Bhusaval-NagpurKharagpur-Dankuni (near Kolkata) route, and 195-km RajkharswanKalipahari-Andal (West Bengal) route. The third is the 975-km North South sub-corridor Vijayawada-Nagpur-Itarsi (Madhya Pradesh) route. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) will soon begin the survey for these corridors and will complete the exercise in a year. These corridors will provide connectivity to Paradeep, Dhamra, G o p a l p u r Po r t s i n O d i s h a a n d Vishakhapatnam, Gangavaram,

Kakinada, Krishnapatnam and Machhalipatanam Ports in Andhra Pradesh, ensuring faster movement of goods and capacity enhancement in the over-saturated sections of the railway network. In a major boost to development of Odisha, the proposed KharagpurVijayawada corridor will pass through the state’s Kalinagar Industrial area, connecting it with southern India. The Kalinagar Industrial area will by then already be connected with the western part of the country through the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.

CIRCULAR NO.36/2020-CUSTOMS Sub.: Procedure to be followed in cases of manufacturing or other operations undertaken in special warehouses under section 65 of the Customs Act-reg. Manufacture and Other Operations in Special Warehouse Regulations, 2020 (hereinafter refer red to as the MOOSWR, 2020) have been issued vide Notification No.75/2020-Customs (N.T.) dated 17th August, 2020. These regulations allow manufacturing and other operations in a special warehouse licensed under section 58A of the Customs Act, 1962, with regard to warehoused goods specified in clause (1) of Notification No. 66/2016-Customs (N.T) dated 14th May, 2020 (herein after referred to as, “specified goods”). 2 MOOSWR, 2020 and this Circular cover the procedures and documentation for a section 58A warehouse, operating under Section 65 of the Act, in a comprehensive manner including application for seeking permission under section 65, provision of execution of the bond and security by the licensee, receipt, storage and removal of goods, maintenance of accounts, conduct of audit etc. 3. Fur ther, the Special Warehouse (Custody and Handling of goods) Regulations, 2016, which were hither to governing the procedure for custody and handling of goods deposited in and removed from a Special Warehouse have been amended, vide Notification No.77/2020-Customs (N.T) dated 17th August, 2020, to exclude their application for such warehouses operating under section 65. The said regulations will continue to be applicable for special warehouses, not operating under Section 65. 4. An applicant desirous of manufacturing or carr ying out other operations on specified goods in a bonded warehouse under section 65, must have the premises licensed as a special warehouse under section 58A of the Customs Act. The applicants can seek a license under section 58A and permission to operate under section 65 synchronously, or request for permission under section 65, if they already have a warehouse licensed under section 58A. 5. For the sake of uniformity, ease of doing business and exercising due diligence in grant of permission under section 65, the form of application to be filed by an applicant before the jurisdictional Principal Commissioner / Commissioner of Customs is prescribed as in Annexure A. The form of application has been so designed that the process for seeking grant of license as a Special Warehouse as well as permission to carr y out manufacturing or other operations stands integrated into a single form. The declaration to be made to satisfy regulation 5 of Special Warehouse Licensing Regulations, 2016, and the under taking to be made by the applicant as per regulation 4 of MOOSWR, 2020, is included in the application format (Par t II). The warehouse in which section 65 permission is granted shall also be declared by the licensee as the principal/additional place of business for the purposes of GST. 6. It has also been decided that the licensees manufacturing or carr ying out other operations in a bonded warehouse shall be required to maintain records as per the form prescribed under this circular (Annexure B). Regulation 4 of the MOOSWR, 2020, provides that the applicant under section 65 shall under take to execute a bond in such format as specified. Fur ther, Section 59 of the Customs Act requires the impor ter of the warehoused goods to furnish security and execute a triple duty bond for the warehoused goods. Thus, the bond prescribed under this Circular as per Annexure C ser ves the requirements of both MOOSWR, 2020 and Section 59 of the Customs Act. Additionally, the licensee will furnish security by way of a bank guarantee equivalent to the duty involved on the warehoused goods. 7. To the extent that the resultant product manufactured or worked upon in a bonded warehouse is expor ted, the licensee shall have to file a shipping bill and pay any amounts due. A GST invoice shall also be issued for such removal. In such a case, no duty is required to be paid in respect of the impor ted goods contained in the resultant product as per the provisions of section 69 of the Act. 8. To the extent that the resultant product (whether emerging out of manufacturing or other operations in the warehouse) is cleared for domestic consumption, such a transaction squarely falls within the ambit of “supply” under Section 7 of the Central Goods and Ser vice Tax Act, 2017 (hereinafter referred to as the “CGST Act”). It would therefore be taxable in terms of section 9 of the CGST Act, 2017 or section 5 of the Integrated Goods and Ser vices Tax Act, 2017 depending upon the supply being intra-state or inter-state. The resultant product will thus be supplied from the warehouse to the domestic tarif f area under the cover of GST invoice on the payment of appropriate GST and compensation cess, if any. As regards impor t duties payable on the impor ted goods contained in so much of the resultant products are concerned, same shall be paid at the time of supply of the resultant product from the warehouse for which the licensee shall have to file an ex-bond Bill of Entr y and such transactions shall be duly reflected in the accounts prescribed under Annexure B. As per MOOSWR, 2020, the applicant shall also inform the input-output norms for raw materials and final products and shall also inform the revised input-output norms in case of change therein. 8.1 The proper of ficer should ensure that the goods so cleared are result of manufacturing or other operations. In case the licensee is unable to carr y out any manufacturing or other operations on warehoused goods, then the goods may be cleared as such, either for home consumption after the payment of applicable impor t duties along with the interest accrued upon such goods in terms of Section 61 (2) of the Customs Act, 1962 or may be expor ted. In such case the provisions of clause (b) of Section 61(1) shall not be applicable. 9. The waste generated during the course of manufacture or other operations of the resultant product may be cleared for home consumption as per clause (b) to sub-section (2) of section 65 of the Customs Act on payment of applicable duties of customs and GST. 10. Where the resultant product is expor ted, and duty on the waste or refuse is paid as per proviso to clause (a) to sub-section (2) of section 65, the same shall be deposited manually through a Challan. The records maintained as per Annexure-B would be sufficient for accountal of such goods. 11. As per Regulation 3 (2) (e) (i) of the Special Warehouse Licensing Regulations, 2016, the Principal Commissioner or Commissioner has to be satisfied that the site or building of the proposed special warehouse is suitable for secure storage of dutiable goods. Regulation 8 of MOOSWR 2020, requires the licensee to provide such facilities, equipment and personnel as are sufficient to control access to the warehouse, provide secure storage of the goods and ensure compliance to the regulations. Considering the nature of goods to be warehoused in a special warehouse, the Principal Commissioner or Commissioner has to ensure that the structure is fully closed from all sides, gate(s) with access control and personnel to safeguard the premises. It is also to be ensured that there is/are CCTV cameras at the gate(s) and there is a provision of accessing the same by customs of ficers. The Principal Commissioner/Commissioners should take into consideration the facilities, equipment and personnel put in place for secure storage of goods, while considering grant of license. Fur ther, office space for bond officer and sufficient space for customs officer for carr ying out examination at the time of arrival or removal of goods have to be provided. Cont’d Supplement Pg.II

CIRCULAR NO.36/2020-CUSTOMS 12. As per Regulation 4(2)(i) of MOOWSR 2020, a licensee is required to maintain accounts of receipt and removal of goods in digital form in such format as may be specified and furnish the same to the bond of ficer on monthly basis digitally. This information shall be communicated from the registered email address of a licensee to the designation based official email id accessed by the bond officer. Appointment of any new warehouse keeper should also be intimated along with the monthly returns. Jurisdictional Commissionerate should ensure that such emails are functional and details of same are communicated at the time of issuance of license and also published through public notice. 13. As per Regulation 18(3), the records should be maintained electronically using software which has inter alia features of audit trail and with each event being recorded with time stamp. The licensee is also required to provide details of such software while applying in terms of MOOSWR 2020. At the time of inspection, the proper of ficer should, through a demonstration, check and ensure that the software meets the requirements of Regulation 18(3). In case licensee wishes to use any other software after issuance of license, bond officer should be informed in advance along with similar demonstration. Proper of ficer should record the obser vations and confirm that the new software meets the requirements of Regulation 18(3). 14. Section 58A provides that the proper officer shall cause a warehouse licensed under section 58A to be locked and no person shall enter the warehouse except in his presence. It is clarified that this requirement shall be applicable for the strong-room where specified goods are warehoused, in terms of regulation 9 of MOOSWR, 2020. This will not apply to the remaining licensed premises. 15. The ser vices of customs of ficer for super vising various activities prescribed in the MOOSWR, 2020, shall be chargeable on cost recover y or over time basis, in terms of regulation 4(2)(vi). The licensee shall have to indicate the frequency with which the warehouse has to be operated per day / per week and the expected business hours of such operation, requiring super vision/presence of the bond officer in terms of MOOSWR, 2020. 15.1 The Principal Commissioner / Commissioner shall evaluate the projected requirement and also consider the distance of the warehouse from the customs office to determine which of the modes of recover y of costs needs to be applied and the amount to be paid by the licensee. 16. The Prime Minister had earlier said that there is a need to give a “new direction” to infrastructure development and for this, integration of key modes of transportation—road, rail, air, waterways—is crucial. “We cannot work in silos. We do not need a situation where in the infrastructure sector, road sector will work only for roads and the rail sector will work only for rail. There is no coordination between the railways and the roadways, between the airport and the port, between the railway station and the bus station—this sort of situation is not desirable,” Modi had said on Independence Day. “It should be complementary to each other. The rail should be complementary to the road, the road to sea port and

the sea port to the airport. We are moving towards a multimodal connectivity infrastructure for the new century,” he said. The Government is currently working towards connecting the entire country with multimodal infrastructure, which uses different modes of transportation to facilitate transportation of goods, thereby cutting travel time and making the system more efficient. Logistics costs are particularly high and have been a pain point for the industry for a long time, impacting the competitiveness of domestic goods in the international market. The Government aims to reduce logistics costs from 14% of gross domestic product (GDP) at the moment to less than 10%.

Hapag-Lloyd starts technology partnership with Intelligent Cargo Systems H A M B U R G : Hapag-Lloyd and L ondon-based maritime technology company Intelligent Cargo Systems are entering into a technology partnership. As informed, the world’s fifth-largest shipping line will use CargoMate software to enable crew to monitor operations more efficiently and safely, while capturing new data to further improve their route and vessel performance. “It is a great milestone for us to announce our partnership with Hapag-Lloyd,” Chris Jones, CEO of Intelligent Cargo Systems, commented. “We’ve worked closely with them in recent years, and we’re excited to continue developing new opportunities to improve their services.” “By having a real-time view of every port call on the CargoMate platform, we’re able to observe port calls in greater detail without requesting progress updates from the terminal or local agent.” Jörn Springer, Senior Director, Network Operations at Hapag-Lloyd, said. “It has uncovered new cost-savings, and will continue our drive to improve performance and visibility for our customers.” Intelligent Cargo Systems’ fleet per for mance platform CargoMate provides carriers with real-time port call visibility and automated notifications of

important port events such as estimated time of completion, enabling fleet managers to dynamically manage coastal schedules. In this way, ship operators can monitor vessel cargo operations in real-time, in any port worldwide. The data collected unlocks new route optimisation insights helping shipping companies reduce fuel costs and improving environmental impact, according to Intelligent Cargo Systems. Hapag Lloyd has a fleet of 239 containerships and a total transport capacity of 1.7 million TEU.

Port land may be used for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ projects NEW DELHI: The Government proposes to use vast stretches of land with Indian ports to set up manufacturing facilities under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. Sources said that the Ministry of shipping is evaluating surplus land with about a dozen major ports in India to evaluate whether it can be used for developing industrial clusters in areas where the country needs to build selfreliance. Major ports have over 1 lakh hectares of land, vast stretches of which can be used for development of industrial clusters. Across the world, land near ports is used for building industrial infrastructure that meet both domestic

needs and export requirements. “This is a model that has been highly successful in the West. Port-led development model should not only help India build capacities for self reliance but also service a vast export market,” said an analyst who did not wish to be named. As part of the initiative, the Ministry of new and renewable energy sources is already in talks with the shipping Ministry to explore green energy manufacturing facilities on port land to reduce dependence on Chinese imports. More such projects involving steel, power projects may also be considered.
