APM Terminals to acquire ALC’s Container Terminal in Aarhus Aarhus Logistics Center transfers ownership of its container terminal in Aarhus to neighboring APM Terminals facility THE HAGUE: Aarhus Logistics Center A/S (ALC) divests its container terminal in the port of Aarhus to APM Terminals, with neighboring APM Terminals Aarhus acquiring operations as well as the port areas of ALC. The transfer of ownership will have effect as of 1 September 2020. The terminal was established by ALC in the spring of 2017, after which ALC has managed to develop a strong activity level. However, due to limitations regarding area capacity and lack of prospects of further developing the business, ALC consequently decided to divest the terminal to the much larger operation at APM Terminals in Aarhus. “Aarhus has a central position for the container traffic, and in ALC, we have within a few years attained a strong activity level. However, we estimate that from a long-term perspective, it will be difficult to further develop our activities. Consequently, it will also involve challenges to continue servicing our clients in the most appropriate way. By selling the terminal to APM Terminals, we also ensure improved possibilities for the clients”, says Jan Dam Poulsen, Managing Director, ALC. With APM Terminals’ acquisition of ALC’s container terminal, the clients will experience more operational benefits in the normal run of things such as increased opening hours, less necessary interactions, increased capacity of reefer containers and a higher level of productivity. With APM Terminals as owners, the clients will also have direct access to regular train services as well as a worldwide liner network.

“We are acquiring an interesting business with loyal clients, who will now gain access to a bigger network, and with that new development opportunities for their business. HMM returns to profit in Q2, first quarterly profit in over 5 years SEOUL: The HMM has returned to profit in the second quarter, its first quarterly profit in 21 quarters, thanks to improved efficiency with the deployment of the World’s Largest Container Vessels and its new membership in one of the World’s Largest Shipping Alliances. HMM said in a regulatory filing that it posted an operating profit of 138.7 billion won ($117.2 million) in the second quarter

ended June on a consolidated basis, reversing from a loss of 2.02 billion won in the previous quarter and 112.9 billion won in the previous year. It also raised a net profit of 28.14 billion won in the April-June period, improving from a net loss of 65.6 billion won in the previous quarter and 200.72 billion won in the previous year. An Entrepot in Great Nicobar

T

he island of Great Nicobar is located 180 km (110 mi) to the north of Sumatra. The south most point is now called ‘Indira Point’. In the past it was referred to as ‘India Point’ or ‘Pygmalion Point’. All ships passing through the Malacca straits have to pass this, making this a great vantage point for shipping and trading. PM’s assertions of building a transshipment port at a cost of 10,000 Crores is a worthy proposition. It has the locational advantage. This point is also important from a military point of view. However, for reasons best known to the policy makers, this option of making it a commercial port was never mooted. It’s never too late. This place can serve as a backup to Singapore or Port Klang. In addition to transshipment, bunkering, crew changes, repairs, supplies, and even drydocks can be offered. That would create new business opportunities and new jobs. In fact, the idea of making it an entrepot along with a normal transshipment hub would be even more enticing. In an entrepot cargo could be imported, stored, and re-exported back with ease, without the need to pay duties. The idea simply is great. However, there are holes to plug. Our Government’s push to make Cochin a transshipment port has failed. We must understand the reasons. Our port costs are exorbitantly and unrealistically high. Even the port authorities’ role as landlords while pushing private operators to compete has made it more costly, due to the exorbitant rents to be paid back by the operators. The highest bidder gets the cake. This principle has made our terminals predatory and rent seeking. Add to that, the typical Indian red tape. The authorities go by the letters of the rules rather than the spirit of the principles.

Attempts to simplify transhipment r ules made them even m o r e complex and opaque. As an example, the rule to allow foreign flag vessels to carry transhipment cargo destined to Indian ports was so hyped that the industry outside started celebrating prematurely. Later it was realised that the restrictions were so severe that it is almost impossible to do any free transhipment on foreign bottoms. The world outside does not trust us for these dichotomies. At times we make the right noise and execute the wrong action. For goods that come from foreign ports and are transhipped to foreign ports, our customs regulations of manifestation are so elaborate and strict that we can not compete with ports freer ones like Port Klang, Singapore, Jebel Ali, or Colombo. We must do three things to succeed in making any of our ports a successful transshipment port. One - Ask Port Authorities to act as benign facilitators without being greedy. Two - Simplify our transshipment regulations further to world standards. Three - Implement the regulations by their spirits, instead of twisting the interpretations of the letters to harass the users. Export, import in Chennai Port hit due to Covid-19, normalcy to take months: Chairman CHENNAI: The export-import trade has been hit due to Covid-19 with Chennai Port in the first four months recording a traffic of only 11.09 milion tonnes, but during July and August things have improved and there is a slight improvement in the traffic, according to Chennai Port Chairman P Raveendran. The Port Chairman addressing the port employees after hoisting the national flag to mark the 74th Independence Day told reporters that export-import trade was hit due to Covid-19 during the end of 2019 and Chennai Port achieved a throughput of 46.76 MT for the year 2019-20 and hoped that in the next four months the port should be able to handle the normal level of traffic. He said that during lockdown restrictions, the port handled all the ships without any delay.

“Due to the restrictions on road movement, evacuation through rail was effected. Chennai Port has taken measures to move the cargo by rail through the extended gate facility at CONCOR Yard, Tondiarpet. Chennai Port has moved a record number of 180 container rakes during the lockdown period surpassing all earlier records. This initiative had helped to keep the terminals congestion-free enabling handling of ships without any problem and within a short time,” he said. Stating that Chennai Port has acquired all the equity shares of Kamarajar Port Limited held by the Government of India during March 2020, he said the acquisition will result in the synergy between these two entities which is very essential in the days of severe competition around this region. ” The strength of Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port will be harnessed to

position ourselves to serve the trade community in a more cost-effective and efficient manner,” he said. He also highlighted the signing of Memorandum of Agreement with Shreyas Shipping and Logistics Ltd for handling Export-Import laden Transhipment containers from Chennai to the Middle East (Chennai–ColomboTu t i c o r i n – C o c h i n – J e b e l Ali–Kandla–Chennai Circuit). This service is expected to attract transshipment containers from different Ports to India and Chennai Port will develop as a Hub Port. This is a very important step in developing Chennai as a transshipment port. He also said that Chennai Port will switch over from the existing EDP system to the EBS system during September 2020 which will enable end to end transactions in the online system.

Addressing the gathering during Independence Day 2020 celebrations, Rinkesh Roy said: ” Cargo handling operations have commenced in the newly developed Iron Ore (Export) B e r t h o f 1 0 M T P A c a p a c i t y. Mechanization of EQ-1, EQ-2 & EQ-3 berths, of 30 MTPA Capacity, with an estimated cost of Rs. 1437.76 Crs. is in progress and is also expected to be

completed by the year end.” Independence Day 2020 was celebrated by Paradip Port Trust Authority with a great passion following the COVID-19 guidelines. The Chairman unfurled the National Flag and reviewed the parade in which 3 c o n t i n g e n t s o f C I S F, participated. Rinkesh Roy stated: “The Port first crossed the c o v e t e d 1 0 0 M M P TA i n FY 2017-18 and has now become the No.1 Major Port in the country for the 1st quarter of FY 2020-21. While this achievement gives immense happiness, which is

shared by people all across the state of Odisha, but we have to now shoulder even bigger responsibilities to retain the No. 1 position in the country.”

Kamarajar Port implements 22 projects for Port Modernization: Chairman Sunil Paliwal CHENNAI: Kamarajar Port (KPL) has identified 22 projects related to Port modernization, capacity expansion and connectivity, Shri Sunil Paliwal, IAS., Chairman cum Managing Director, has said. Addressing the gathering at the Independence Day Celebration at Kamarajar Port, Shri Sunil Paliwal, said: “Under Sagarmala, Kamarajar Port has identified 22 projects related to port modernization , capacity expansion and connectivity which attributes to a capacity addition of 135.62 MTPA at an investment cost of Rs.12,647.34 Crores.” Shri Sunil Paliwal stated: “Out of 22 projects, 10 projects have already been completed at a cost of Rs.6978.71 Cr with a capacity addition of 40.44 MTPA. Six projects are under implementation stage (Capacity addition- 29.60 MTPA

and Cost of Rs.1980.50 Cr) and remaining 6 projects are in pipeline (Capacity addition- 65.60 MTPA and Rs.3688.13 Cr).” From a humble beginning with a Port capacity of 12 MMTPA, KPL has now gained a robust growth and has a handling capacity at 54.44 MMTPA and has set ambitious projections of 84.44 M M T PA b y 2 0 2 1 - 2 2 t h r o u g h Development of State-of-the-Art New Cargo Terminal under Public Private Partnership model / Captive models. Shri Sunil Paliwal stated: “Considering the increasing road traffic movement of import / export of c a r g o e s , Po r t i s e x e c u t i n g t h e Southern port access road (Road widening from 2 lane to 4 lane) from Vallur to Port Main Gate at a cost of Rs.195 Cr through TNRDC. CMA CGM unveils new Noura Express setup MARSEILLE: CMA CGM has updated its weekly dedicated East African product, the Noura Express service, which connects the Middle East, Subcontinent, East Africa and Indian Ocean with effect from the first week of September 2020. Noura Express will be operated by the French carrier with six container vessels of 2,500TEU nominal capacity. The updated port coverage: Colombo – Jebel Ali – Mogadishu – Longoni – Beira (1/2) – Nacala (1/2) – Port Victoria – Colombo. The Marseille-based company said the updated product offers a new direct service with a weekly frequency from Jebel Al i t o M o g a d i s h u i n f i v e d a y s . I n a d d i t i on, CMA CGM announced "competitive transit times" to Mayotte 11 days, Mozambique 15 days and Seychelles 24 days from the United Arab Emirates.

OOCL to launch New Intra-Asia service HONG KONG: COSCO-owned carrier, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has introduced the new China Indonesia Philippines service (CIP), which is expected to launch in September 2020. The first sailing will start from Shanghai on 1 September 2020 and will follow the below port rotation: CIP port rotation: Shanghai - Ningbo - Da Chan Bay Jakarta - Surabaya - Manila South Harbour - Hong Kong – Shanghai. CIP will enhance the network coverage from China to Indonesia, Indonesia to Philippines, as well as Indonesia and Philippines to China, according to a statement.

COVID-19 to weigh on U.S. seaport peak shipping season NEW YORK: Imports at major U.S. container seaports could hit their lowest level in four years as the novel coronavirus pandemic pummels a U.S. economy that was already grappling with negative effects of the U.S.-China trade war, experts said. Total container imports could fall 9.4% in 2020, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates’ Global Port Tracker report. That reflects pain in the U.S. retail sector, which is smarting from Government-mandated store closures and bracing for fallout from the recent expiration of a supplemental $600 weekly unemployment benefit that put $18 billion into the U.S. economy each week. Amazon.com, Walmart and other retailers have begun bringing in inventory for the vital winter holiday season. August is forecast to be the busiest month of the peak ocean shipping season that stretches from July to October. “Retailers are being careful not to import more than they can

sell. … This is not the year to be left with warehouses full of unsold merchandise,” NRF Vice President Jonathan Gold said. U.S. seaborne imports dropped 3.9% year-over-year in July, the slowest rate of decline this year. At the same time, monthover-month imports increased 16%, marking the fastest start to the peak shipping season since 2007, according to Panjiva, the supply chain research unit of S&P Global Market Intelligence. Home furnishing imports were up 12.8% versus July 2019, while home appliances jumped 33.8%, and home/personal care products surged 48.9%, Panjiva’s analysis showed. “There are signs of prepping for the year-end holiday season,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, the No. 1 gateway for sea trade with China, said on Thursday. “The upticks are modest” as some busy retailers restock.” Port of Los Angeles imports fell 4.3% in July and remain down 15% year-to-date.

Port of Singapore stays resilient amid Covid-19 pandemic as Container throughput remains robust SINGAPORE: The sea port of Singapore has been more resilient amid the Covid-19 pandemic as it stays open to the movement of container boxes of cargo. Container throughput in the first half of this year has remained robust compared with the same period last year, dipping to 17.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) against 18 million TEUs in the first half of last year, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said recently.

It also said that the building of Tuas Port is being done in four distinct phases for greater flexibility in its development timeline. It is scheduled to be fully completed in the 2040s. MPA’s spokesman added that it will continue to review the timeline, “taking into account Singapore’s needs and the growth in sea trade”. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung, in his National Day address to his staff, gave no hint of a slowdown in the construction of Tuas port.

The Country ’s sea flag carrier, formerly known Hyundai Merchant Marine, swung to profit for the first time in 21 quarters in the April-June period after joining The Alliance, one of the world’s largest shipping alliances, in April, which has broadened its coverage in Europe, and deploying a 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) super-large container vessel to its route, which ramped up its cargo handling capacity significantly, the company said. HMM’s both container and bulk businesses reported solid performance thanks to improved cost efficiency through route rationalization and lower container costs. Freight rates also increased in the period, helping to improve profitability. Uncertainty lies ahead in the second half of the year amid escalating conflicts between the world’s two largest economies the United States and China and the protracted pandemic. But the sea flag carrier plans to continue to improve its profitability by offering differentiated shipping services to cargo owners, putting out efforts to secure additional stable cargo, and improving IT system. HMM also plans to launch all 12 of its 24,000 TEU container carriers by the end of next month. With all the 12 super-large container carriers deployed, HMM’s active capacity would reach 800,000 TEU, the eighth largest in the global shipping market.

Its bulk business is also expected to improve in the later half as economic activities are projected to grow with ease of lockdown restriction, and demand for oil and petrochemical products should recover during winter. Demand for iron ore is also expected to recover on the revived steel industry. The company’s turnaround raises hope for potential revival of Korea’s shipping industry that has relied on the Korean Government’s support for rehabilitation. HMM became the dominant player in the country’s shipping industry after bigger rival Hanjin Shipping declared bankrupt in 2017. HMM – which spun off from Hyundai Group – was nationalized and underwent massive reform led by state lender Korea Development Bank (KDB) under the Government’s long-term initiative to rebuild Korea’s shipping industry. Moon Seong-hyeok, Minister of the Ministry of Ocean & Fisheries, said that HMM`s return to profit is a result of five years of Government efforts to rebuild the country’s shipping industry. Moon expected that HMM will post an annual net profit in 2022. The Government plans to ramp up HMM cargo capacity from current 590,000 TEU to 1 million TEU in 2022 with an aim to expand its coverage routes in Asia and pioneer new sea routes in Southeast United States, South America, and West Africa. HMM will also aim to raise 51 trillion won in revenue by 2025.

ZIMGuard™ - AI-Based System Developed by ZIM Detects Misdeclarations ZIM’s new ZIMGuard™ System Scans and Flags Possible Misdeclarations in Real Time, Increasing the Safety of the Supply Chain HAIFA: ZIM has developed and implemented an innovative AI-based screening software to detect and identify incidents of mis-declared hazardous cargo before loading to vessel. The new ZIMGuard™ system scans shippers’ cargo declarations at an early stage and flags potential cases of wrongly declared cargo. The system harnesses Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities and Machine Learning, to analyze documentation and alert operations personnel of occurrences of omission, concealment or erroneous declaration of hazardous cargo – in real time. Misdeclaration of hazardous cargo has been at the root of major marine incidents, causing loss of life and severe damages. Last year, several carriers announced the imposition of additional fees as a partial solution for this recurring problem. ZIMGuard™ has already proven its efficacy on numerous occasions since its introduction. The ZIMGuard™ system is already in use in major ports in China, the US and Israel, and is expected to be deployed in all ZIM lines by the end of 2020.
