MSC supports cargo shippers with new Trade Finance offering in india GENEVA: MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global leader in transport and logistics, has selected India as the first market to benefit from a new trade finance solution for cargo shippers, said a recent MSC release. MSC Trade Finance is fast, simple and flexible and will help Indian exporters to ship goods and manage cashflow. With the new solution, MSC customers can arrange cargo shipments and pay later at the point of shipment or delivery. This is a welcome development for companies tackling the challenging operating environment imposed by the recent COVID-19 lockdown. Bahri adds new Dry-Bulk carrier ‘Sara’ to its industry-leading fleet RIYADH: Bahri, a global leader in logistics and transportation, has announced that it has taken delivery of the new dry-bulk carrier ‘Sara.’ Built by Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding (HVS), a subsidiary of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. (HMD), the vessel increases the company’s fleet of dry-bulk carriers to six ships in line with its efforts to expand its marine capabilities and maintain its position as a leading dry-bulk carrier both regionally and globally. The new Kamsarmax-class vessel is the first ship received as part of the agreement signed between Bahri Dry Bulk and South Korea’s HMD in August 2017 to build and deliver four new dry-bulk carriers by 2020. Eng. Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO, Bahri, commented: “This new vessel represents an important addition to our fleet, and for Bahri Dry Bulk in particular, as it reinforces our position as the foremost dry-bulk logistics provider in the region and beyond. The delivery comes against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic, underlining our
commitment to expanding our business and upgrading our services, even in the most challenging of times. By further strengthening our fleet, we look to forward to enhancing our position as an industry leader and contributing to the Vision 2030 goal of establishing Saudi Arabia as a global logistics hub connecting three continents.” The new vessel ‘Sara’ was built at the Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding dockyard in Vietnam under the latest international technical specifications. The environmentally friendly ship has been developed to offer the highest standards of comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency, with a design draft speed of 14.20 knots at normal continuous rating (NCR) with a 15% sea margin. The new carrier will serve the growing demand in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for imports of basic grains, such as wheat, barley, corn, and other dry-bulk cargoes. The four new dry-bulk carriers have been ordered to fulfill the needs of consumers in the Saudi market and the wider region, together with international companies that import grains to the Kingdom.
Hapag Lloyd gets 2020 off to a decent start despite coronavirus pandemic, uncertainties remain HAMBURG: For the first quarter of 2020, Hapag-Lloyd recorded earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of USD 176 million (EUR 160 million), which is below the corresponding prior-year figure of USD 243 million (EUR 214 million). The Group net result declined to approximately USD 27 million (EUR 25 million). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased slightly to USD 517 million (EUR 469 million). ‘Despite the coronavirus pandemic, we have gotten the year off to a good start. Higher transport volumes and better freight rates have boosted our revenues. The financial result is below the first quarter of the previous year as we faced higher bunker prices after the new IMO 2020 rules on 1 January and we had a significant negative bunker stock valuation after the decline in crude oil prices at the end of the first quarter,’ said Rolf Habben Jansen, Chief Executive Officer of Hapag-Lloyd AG. Revenues increased in the first quarter of 2020 by around 6 percent, to USD 3.7 billion (EUR 3.3 billion). This can primarily be attributed to a 4.3 percent increase in transport volumes, to more than 3 million TEU, and an improved average freight rate of USD 1,094 per TEU. Transport expenses increased by almost 10 percent, disproportionately to revenues, particularly due to higher bunker costs, which increased by USD 98 to USD 523 per tonne as a result of the transition to low-sulphur fuel oil required by the IMO 2020 regulation. This had
a negative impact on earnings, as did a devaluation of bunker inventories of around USD 64 million (approximately EUR 58 million) due to the rapid decline in crude oil prices that began at the end of the first quarter. Rolf Habben Jansen: ‘Although we were able to pick up a bit of tailwind at the beginning of the year, we anticipate that the coronavirus pandemic will have very significant impacts in 2020, beginning in the second quarter. Our main focuses will continue to be the safety and well-being of our employees as well as the supply chains of our customers. We have taken a wide range of measures designed to save an amount in the mid-triple-digit million range to safeguard our profitability and liquidity. We adjust our service network to the lower demand and seek savings in all cost categories, from terminal, transport, equipment and network costs to overhead.’ Taking into account the prevailing uncertainties and building on the planned cost cutting measures as well as based on the premise that the pandemic will peak in the second quarter and give way to a gradual recovery in the global economy in the second half of the year, the Executive Board has substantiated its earnings forecast from the start of the year. This means that Hapag-Lloyd still continues to expect EBITDA of EUR 1.7 to 2.2 billion and EBIT of EUR 0.5 to 1.0 billion for the current financial year. However, unless there is a recovery in demand for container transport services earlier and stronger than expected in the market studies cited in the financial report for the first quarter 2020, the upper end of the forecast ranges is barely achievable from today’s perspective.

Mansukh Mandaviya welcomes Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan to support Indian economy in fight against COVID-19 NEW DELHI: Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C) for Shipping, and Chemicals and Fertilizers has welcomed the slew of measures announced by the Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, in pursuance of the announcement made by Hon’ble Prime Minister. Shri Narendra Modi had announced recently a Special economic and comprehensive package of Rs 20 lakh Crore. He gave a clarion call for आ म िनभर भारत अिभयान or Self-Reliant India Movement. He also outlined five pillars of Aatmanirbhar Bharat – Economy, Infrastructure, System, Vibrant Demography and Demand. Shri Mandaviya has said that the details announced by the finance Minister in three tranches so far, will go a long way in ameliorating the Indian economy and its citizens, who are bravely
fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that the Finance Minister, in her first tranche, announced measures focusing on Getting back to work i.e., enabling employees and employers, businesses, especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, to get back to production and workers back to gainful employment. Efforts to strengthen Non-Banking Finance Institutions (NBFCs), Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), Micro Finance Sector and Power the tax relief to business, relief from contractual commitments to contractors in public procurement and compliance relief to real estate sector, will provide support and succor to the businesses, and support the economic activities. Shri Mandaviya said that the 2nd Tranche of measures will ameliorate the hardships faced specifically by migrant labours, street vendors, migrant
urban poor, small traders, self-employed people, small farmers and housing. He said that the Modi Government believes in pro-poor policies and has taken due care to help and support the poor. Shri Mandaviya said that the third tranche has taken care of the interests of the toiling Ann-datta of the countrythe farmers and those working in the fields. The sectors focused have been agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, Bee Culture, Medicinal plants, supply chain, etc. Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for his t i m e l y, f o c u s e d a n d a p p r o p r i a t e response to the unprecedented crisis, Shri Mandaviya expressed confidence that we will emerge stronger after the implementation of the special economic package announced by the Prime Minister Shri Modi, amounting to around 10% of our GDP.
Exports plunge by record 60.28% in April; trade deficit lowest in 4 years NEW DELHI: Contracting for the second straight month, India's exports shrank by a record 60.28 per cent in April to $10.36 billion, mainly on account of the coronavir us lockdown, official data showed. Imports too plunged by 58.65 per cent to $17.12 billion in April, leaving a trade deficit of $6.76 billion as against $15.33 billion in April 2019, according to the data by the commerce and industry ministry. This is the lowest trade deficit since May 2016, when it had stood at $6.27 billion. The country's exports had declined by 34.57 per cent in March 2020. "The decline in exports has been mainly due to the ongoing global slowdown, which got aggravated due to the current Covid-19 crisis. The latter resulted in large scale disruptions in supply chains and demand resulting in cancellation of orders," the ministry said in a statement. Barring iron ore and pharmaceuticals,
all the remaining 28 key sectors registered negative growth in the month under review. Gems and jeweller y shipments declined 98.74 per cent, followed by leather (- 93.28 per cent), petroleum products (66.22 per cent), engineering goods (- 64.76 per cent), and chemicals (- 42 per cent) . Oil imports in April were $4.66 billion, which was 59.03 per cent lower as compared to the same month last year. All 30 key imports sectors like gold, silver, transport equipment, coal, fertiliser, machinery and machine tools posted negative growth during the month. Non-oil imports fell 58.5 per cent to $12.46 billion in April. Gold imports stood at $2.83 million, as against $4 billion in April 2019. The nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus outbreak began on March 25, shutting industrial units and restricting movement of goods. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recetly announced measures
to promote agri exports. Mohit Singla, chairman of Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), said the announcement would help India achieve its target of $100 billion agri exports. "The proposed amendment in essential commodity act is a welcome step in deregulating the agri sector which will save the farmers from artificial price management activities by different forces," Singla said. Since 2011-12, India's exports have been hovering around the $300 billion mark. During 2017-18, the overseas shipments grew by about 10 per cent to $303 billion and further to $330.08 billion in 2018-19 and $314.31 billion in 2019-20. The drop in exports is in sync with the p r o j e c t i o n s o f t h e Wo r l d Tr a d e Organisation (WTO), which has stated that world trade is expected to fall between 13 per cent and 32 per cent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Garment exports shrink 90% in April, state exporters seek nod to ship masks NEW DELHI: Covid-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the country’s readymade garment exports in April — shrinking 90% to Rs 963 crore compared to Rs 9,786 crore in the same period last year. The sharp drop comes after a 30% decline in exports in the month of March compared to the same period last year. While for the full 2019-20, the garment exports have declined by 3% to Rs 1.09 lakh crore in the country. Rajasthan has a share of about 3% and engages about 3 lakh people directly in the sector having 1,200 units spread across the state. “The industry is in deep trouble, threatening the sur vival of many exporters. The government needs to
address issues like cash flow, ease of doing business and providing financial incentives comprehensively. Many neighbouring states have also brought in labour reformss to help their industry which can be looked at in Rajasthan as well,” said Rajiv Dewan, president of Garment Exporters Association (GEAR). The difficult time has also thrown up some opportunities, but it requires policy change which will help the industry find some relief. GEAR has written to textile minister Smriti Irani requesting her to allow exports of non-surgical masks (decorative fabric mask) to enable the exporters resume their manufacturing and export activities.
“We have been getting export inquiries from many parts of the world for supply of non-surgical masks made out of various types of fabrics. The permission to export them as fashion accessories will be of immense support. The permission will help the garment manufacturer to consume their huge stock of fabrics held by them due to cancelled export orders. The mask exports will also open avenues for an alternative income and generate employment,” said Aseem Singla, general secretary of GEAR. Export of masks was banned in February this year as the government thought that India would require vast amount of masks for its public.

Monthly exports yet again shows highest-ever fall due to Coronavirus, expects mega economic package to revive exports and overall economy: FIEO President N E W D E L H I : Responding to a yet again highest-ever double digit decline in monthly exports, of well over two and half decades, during April, 2020 by 60.28 percent at USD 10.36 billion, FIEO President Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf said that lockdown measures due to Covid-19 across the globe has not only pushed the global business sentiments to its lowest but has also impacted the supply chain and brought slump in the economies across the world. Mr Saraf added that the exports during the month for emergency and essential items like drugs and pharmaceutical products only were marginally positive. The reason being lockdown measures followed across the world, disruption of supply chains and major cancellations in orders except for drugs and pharma. Mr Saraf expressed his serious concerns over sharp decline in employment-intensive sectors of exports which has serious ramifications for the jobs in the country particularly as domestic demand will also not be robust.
With the mega economic package of Rs 20 lakh crores announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister and details being presented by the Hon’ble Finance Minister, FIEO Chief is of the view that we may expect revival in exports from the third quarter of the fiscal, depending on the condition evolving in the international market. With major global players including US, UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Netherland, Italy, Sweden and Bangladesh having provided the bailout or financial packages to their industry to sail through these difficult times it is also expected that the same would help in bringing good news for the overall international trade, said Mr Saraf. Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf said that 28 out of the 30 major product groups saw highestever double-digit negative growth of almost up to 99 percent during April 2020. Even large quantities of petroleum exports could not push value wise exports as the international prices were at rock bottom. Further imports of USD 17.12 billion with a very high double digit decline of 58.65 percent during the month, is also the
highest decline in imports in well over two and half decades. Mr Sharad Kr Saraf reiterated that with the cancellation of about 70-80% of orders, casting a gloomy picture besides major job losses and rising NPAs amongst exporting units, we urge the Government to immediately implement the economic measures announced at the ground level for quick and early starting of trade and businesses across the country during such difficult and testing times. Exports may be provided additional MEIS of 2% across the board and 4% for labour-intensive sectors to help them in such difficult times. Government should allow roll over of forward cover without interest and penalty and automatic enhancement of limit by 25% to address liquidity challenges. Besides, immediate need of the hour is also the Export Development Fund and various reforms measures including overall ease of doing business for marketing of Brand India products across the globe and boosting foreign direct investment in the country respectively.
Cargo volumes at state-owned ports decline 21 per cent in April Cont’d. from Pg. 3 With the exception of Mormugao Port Trust, the remaining 11 major ports reported volume declines in April compared to the same period last year, according to the Shipping Ministry. Among the 12 ports, Chennai Port Trust reported the steepest fall in cargo volumes in April at 38.17 per cent, handling 2.44 mt (3.95 mt). Jawaharlal Nehr u Port Tr ust (JNPT), India’s biggest container port located near Mumbai, reported a 33.97 per cent drop in volumes to 3.95 mt from 5.99 mt. Cochin Port Trust handled 1.87 mt, 33.73 per cent lower than the 2.83 mt handled last April. Kamarajar Port Ltd, India’s only state-owned port that is run as a
company, handled 2.08 mt, a drop of 30.03 per cent over the 2.97 mt last year. Kolkata Port Trust reported a volume drop of 26.49 per cent to 3.65 mt from 4.96 mt. Cargo volumes handled by V O Chidambaranar Port Trust dropped 25.52 per cent to 2.29 mt from 3.08 mt. Deendayal Port Trust, India’s biggest state-owed port by volumes handled, reported a 23.25 per cent decline in volumes to 8.67 mt from 11.30 mt. Cargo traffic at Mumbai Port Trust fell 18.26 per cent to 4.08 mt from 5.00 mt. Visakhapatnam Port Trust reported a 11.97 per cent decline in volumes to 5.00 mt from 5.69 mt. Paradip Port Trust handled 8.56 mt, a drop of 10.34 per cent over the 9.55 mt. New Mangalore Port Trust reported
a 1.29 per cent decline in volumes to 3.22 mt from 3.26 mt. Mormugao Port Trust handled 1.56 mt from 1.48 mt, a growth of 5.41 per cent. All the commodities except raw fertilisers reported a decline in volumes. Crude oil, petroleum products, LPG and LNG declined 14.11 per cent, other liquids by 35.58 per cent, iron ore including pellets by 11.34 per cent, finished fertilisers by 14.65 per cent, thermal and steam coal by 30.46 per cent, coking coal and others by 17.07 per cent and containers by 36.98 per cent (in twenty foot equivalent unit or TEU terms). Raw fertilisers notched a growth of 75.27 per cent.

Not create unnecessary trade barriers, allow essential cross-border travel: G-20 Trade Ministers NEW DELHI: The G -20 trade ministers has endorsed short term steps such as emergency trade measures designed to tackle COVID-19 including export restrictions on vital medical supplies and equipment and other essential goods and services so that do not create unnecessary barriers to trade or disruption to global supply chains, and are consistent with the global trade rules. In a statement issued after the v i r t u a l m e e t i n g o f Tr a d e a n d Investment Ministers of the G20, the grouping said it would “encourage our governments to establish voluntary
guidelines that would allow, in the event of a global health crisis, essential crossborder travel, including essential business travel, on an exceptional basis, in accordance with national laws and regulations, and without undermining efforts to safeguard public health”. During the virtual meeting, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal asked the G20 members to first focus on immediate and concrete actions that can ease the distress being faced by people all over the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Goyal said that doing away with the policy instrument of export restrictions
is not a panacea that will guarantee access to medical products and food for all. In fact, such a step is likely to lead to a flight of these critical products to the h i g h e s t b i d d e r, m a k i n g t h e m inaccessible to the resource-poor. Short-term collective actions The G-20 trade ministers also said they would refrain from introducing export restrictions on agricultural products, including on products purchased for non-commercial humanitarian purposes, and avoid unnecessary food-stockpiling, without prejudice to domestic food security, consistent with national requirements
IWAI ready for maiden export-import cargo movement through Indo Bangladesh Protocol route NEW DELHI: The government said it is fully geared for maiden export-import cargo movement through the Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and containers of steel fillings are being loaded at Haldia Port for Dhaka. The Export-Import cargo will be
moved through National Waterways 1 (river Ganga), NW 97 (Sundarbans) and IBP route by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), it said. “IWAI is fully ready for the first ever export-import cargo movement through IBP route,” Shipping Minister
Mansukh L Mandavia said. “Sixty-four containers of steel fillings/pig iron ingots are being loaded at HDC Haldia for Dhaka via NWI, Sundarbans and IBP route,” he added. The minister termed it a landmark and proud moment for IWAI.
No adverse impact on biz due to COVID-19: Snowman Logistics BANGALORE: Snowman Logistics recently said COVID -19 has not impacted its business as the company’s operations continued during the lockdown. The statement comes days after the proposed sale of entire 40.25 per cent stake of Gateway Distriparks in Snowman Logistics to Adani Group firm was called off. “The business of Snowman Logistics Ltd is considered under the ‘essential services’ category as per the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and accordingly all the warehouses of the company are functional and fully operational. “Thus, the pandemic has not had any adverse impact on the
company’s business as its operations continued during the lockdown period as well,” the company said in a filing to BSE. The clarification from the company came in response to some media reports which said Snowman Logistics’ business was being impacted due to COVID-19, according to the filing. However, the company faced some logistics related issues due to lack of availability of drivers, it said. Further, this year the prawn culture crop is excellent and exports are slow leading to more storage of seafood, thereby increasing Snowman’s core business of cold store warehousing, it said. The seafood storage business is not
impacted due to the pandemic, it said adding that in fact, the impact was in the calendar year 2019 due to cyclones Fani and Bulbul. Due to the above mentioned reasons the warehouse occupancies at Snowman have increased to 91.5 per cent as on date from 84 per cent as on March 22, 2020 (i.e. before the lockdown),” it said. The proposed sale of entire 40.25 per cent stake of Gateway Distriparks in Snowman Logistics to Adani Logistics has been called off due to repudiation of the agreement by the acquirer, according to a regulatory filing. Snowman Logistics is the cold chain unit of Gateway Distriparks Ltd.
Coronavirus ‘could cost global economy $8.8tn’ says ADB MANILA: The coronavirus pandemic could cost the global economy between $5.8tn and $8.8tn (£4.7tn-£7.1tn), according to Asian Development Bank (ADB). That’s more than double last month’s prediction and equates to 6.4%-9.7% of the world’s economic output. It comes as measures to slow the spread of Covid-19 continue to paralyse economic activity around the world. Globally authorities have taken
aggressive action to cushion their economies from the outbreak’s impact. “This new analysis presents a broad picture of the very significant potential economic impact of Covid-19,” the ADB’s chief economist Yasuyuki Sawada said. “It also highlights the important role policy interventions can play to help mitigate damage to economies,” he added. The ADB said the top end of the range was based on the assumption that curbs to
movement and businesses operating would last six months, while the bottom end assumed the restrictions would remain in place for three months. Central banks around the world have moved aggressively to cut interest rates and roll out massive stimulus measures to help combat the impact of the outbreak that has rocked financial markets and raised fears of a deep global recession.
India's forex reserves rise by over $4 bn to $485.313 bn MUMBAI: India's foreign exchange reserves rose by $4.235 billion during the week ended May 8th, RBI data showed on Friday. According to the RBI’s weekly statistical supplement, the overall forex reserves increased to $485.313 billion from
$481.078 billion reported for the week ended May 1. On a weekly basis, FCAs, the largest component of the forex reserves, edged higher by $4.233 billion to $447.548 billion. Similarly, the value of the country’s gold

DP World CEO feels UAE will come out of COVID 19 pandemic stronger than others DUBAI: The chairman of D P Wo r l d , t h e l a r g e s t operator of ports globally, is open to acquisitions, believes the UAE will come out of the Covid-19 pandemic stronger and is unfazed by the impact of the crisis, as the company leverages technology to serve businesses in the new environment. “This crisis is not like the 2008-2009 (global financial) crisis. This is different,” Sultan bin Sulayem said in an interview recently. “This is similar to the collapse of the world economies after World War II … there was a war, cities were damaged, factories were damaged, roads were destroyed … today we have a similar situation. Factories are not destroyed but workers cannot work in them. Streets are safe and clean, but no one wants to go (out). People are not buying.” The coronavirus pandemic, the most serious challenge to the global economy since the Great Depression, forced China, the world’s second largest economy, to go into lockdown and shutter all manufacturing, disrupting supply chains. Factories in the country have slowly come back online as the number of infections and deaths in the country receded. The disruption and concerns over Covid-19 forced businesses and individuals to increasingly transact digitally, which DP World is capitalising on with its investment in technology. “As far as DP World, we have definitely adapted ourselves to the situation. We have devised a role where we are a conduit to get food and medicine in and out very efficiently,” Mr bin Sulayem said. “We are fortunate in the UAE that we adopted digital technology 20 years ago. The opportunity in this crisis is that in the past people used technology because it is easier, but they were not obliged to. Now it is a necessity, you need to use it. Everybody is buying whatever they need online,” he added. To facilitate trade across DP World’s global network of ports, terminals and economic zones in over 50 countries, the ports operator rolled out three digital platforms it already had in the pipeline, accelerating their push out because of the crisis. They cover sea, land and air shipping worldwide. DP World also created a Digital Freight Alliance, an online association, that gathers freight forwarders on to one platform. The port operator may top up its investment in the digital space, Mr bin Sulayem said. “Whatever it takes to take advantage of the opportunities … we have no limit,” he said. “We are actually saving money by not putting it in something else and putting it into this. The advantage for DP World is that since 2016, we invested in the region of $6 billion (Dh22bn) in logistics, logistics parks … all the assets that we built can be leveraged efficiently by technology.” The pandemic has disrupted daily life, paralysed air travel, wiped out at least trillions of dollars from stock markets worldwide and forced governments to introduce economic stimulus packages worth more than $8 trillion as countries went into lockdown and economies came to a standstill. DP World handled 17.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) shipping containers across its global portfolio in the first quarter, with gross container volumes decreasing 1.7 per cent year-on-year on a reported basis but up 0.3 per cent on a like-forlike basis. At its flagship Jebel Ali port in Dubai, it handled 3.4 million TEUs in the first quarter, down 3.4 per cent year-on-year, due to a decline in lower-margin cargo. But that’s of no concern to Mr bin Sulayem. “This is not because of Covid, it’s because we are avoiding low margin cargo; cargo that doesn’t give me money – I don’t want it – I want cargo that gives me money,” he said. Global trade is expected to decline 27 per cent in the second quarter of 2020, after falling 3 per cent in the first three months of the year, as global production and manufacturing output drop 9 per cent year-on-year, due to the pandemic, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. At the start of the year, the price of a 20ft standard container stood at about $1,750, which increased to as much as $2,150 at the end of February, before falling to $1,900 in late March amid Covid-19 and the lockdown in China, according to industry consultant Drewry.
“Even though the Covid-19 pandemic will result in a decline in the size of the container equipment fleet in 2020, newbuild prices and leasing rates are expected to fir m. A strong recovery in trading volumes in 2021 will reinforce this situation,” Drewry said in a Mr. Sultan bin Sulayem report last month. Still, where there is a crisis Mr bin Sulayem sees opportunity and he doesn’t rule out further expansion globally be it in investments or acquisitions. “Absolutely. We are very opportunistic in this environment,” he said, when asked if they would consider acquiring assets in the wake of the pandemic and economic downturn. “Whenever there is an opportunity, we see that there are [potential] customers of course we will do it. We are customer driven and oriented company,” Mr bin Sulayem added. “Today I don’t have a port in the North Pole, tomorrow somebody tells me there is cargo and customers tell me bring cargo to the North Pole, you will see that I will invest in the North Pole.” Mr bin Sulayem continues to be upbeat on Africa, considered by investors and strategists as one of the last frontiers of growth. “We are always bullish about Africa. Africa is a big opportunity, you see our investment in Senegal, in Berbera, in Rwanda, Mali and Chad. We need to improve the logistics in that area because that’s a big opportunity,” he said. He also sees opportunity in Latin America and DP World intends to leverage its investments in Peru and Chile accordingly. In Asia, Indonesia is a pocket of growth for the company as is India despite its slowing economy. “Our outlook for 2020 is [that] it’s challenging; the real impact, we haven’t seen it so far, maybe we will see it in the second quarter,” Mr bin Sulayem said. “It might become normal we don’t know. Before Covid came everybody expected 2020 to be bad … and we took a provision in our business,” he added. “We didn’t believe there would be growth, we believed it’s going to be flat. We took very cautious decisions in investment, we took cautious decisions in tightening our belt and making sure we only invest in something that’s going to bring revenue.” The immediate winners post Covid-19 are the logistics companies, those facilitating online trade and companies affiliated with the health and medical industry, Mr bin Sulayem said. For the losers, which include hotels, those affiliated with the hospitality and travel sectors, “it will take them a longer time [to recover],” he said. For Dubai and the UAE, the former chairman of Dubai World, said lessons were learnt during the 2008 global financial crisis that are today shaping the response to the crisis and will accelerate the economy’s rebound once the pandemic subsides. “The crisis of Covid is totally different than any other crisis. But the policies that the UAE follows in dealing with a crisis stay the same,” Mr bin Sulayem said. “In 2009, everybody predicted Dubai is the name you see everywhere about the crisis. What did we do? We borrowed $20bn to bail out government companies so they survive and at the same time we invested, as the Government of Dubai, $100bn in the metro, the power plants [and] in the huge network of bridges and roads. Similar things were done by Abu Dhabi, huge investment in infrastructure,” he added. “As a result, the UAE was the first to come out of the crisis stronger than everybody else. That experience in solving problems regardless of what they are is our biggest asset today, we believe we will come out standing on our feet and you can see it evident by the collaboration of all the stakeholders.” Mr bin Sulayem commended the Central Bank of the UAE for its swift decision to roll out stimulus and various emirates for pushing out incentive and relief schemes to help businesses cope with the crisis. “While everybody else is busy asking why did this crisis happen and pointing fingers, in the UAE we are doing something about that, we are not wasting our time,” he said, adding “Today like you have a kid [who] cuts their ankle and is bleeding, we stop the bleeding first and we can talk about the rest later on .”
