Exports rise 6% in January, Trade deficit narrows to $14.54 bn NEW DELHI: India’s trade deficit in goods narrowed to $14.54 billion in January as exports grew faster than imports, revised data released by the government showed recently. The merchandise trade deficit was $15.3 billion in January 2020. The merchandise exports rose 6.16% in January from a year earlier to $27.45 billion, while imports were up 2.03% to $42 billion, the data showed. Exports in January 2021 were $27.45 billion, as compared to $25.85 billion in January 2020, exhibiting a positive growth of 6.16%, the government said.
However, cumulative value of exports during AprilJanuary this fiscal dipped by 13.58 % to $228.25 billion, while imports declined by 25.92 per cent to $300.26 billion. On the other hand, imports in January 2021 were $41.99 billion (Rs.3,06,951.56 crore), which is an increase of 2.03% in dollar terms and 4.60% in rupee terms over imports of $41.15 billion (Rs2,93,452.69 crore) in January 2020. Cumulative value of imports for the period April-January 2020-21 was $300.26 billion as against $405.33 billion during the period April-January 2019-20, registering a negative growth of (-) 25.92%, the data showed. PIL appointed General Manager, Fleet Division • Mr Goh Chung Hun has been appointed as General Manager, Fleet Division, PIL • Prior experience as Director (Shipping) / Director (Marine) at the Mari me and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) • Succeeds Capt R.S. Minhas from 15th February 2021 SINGAPORE: Pacific International Lines (“PIL”) has appointed Mr. Goh Chung Hun as General Manager, Fleet Division, effective from 1st February 2021. Mr. Goh succeeds Captain R.S. Minhas from 15th February 2021. Mr. Goh will be overseeing the management of PIL's fleet, including technical, marine operations, safety and crewing at PIL. Mr. Goh brings with him almost 30 years of fleet management, technical, marine operations and seafaring experience. Prior to joining PIL, he was Director (Shipping) / Director (Marine) at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), where he managed the Singapore Registry of Ships, flag state control, port state control, marine casualty investigations, maritime regulations, as well as the training and certification of seafarers. He was the head of Singapore’s delegation to the IMO for the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and chaired the IMO working group that finalised the upcoming ban on the use of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he was also responsible for setting up a specialised team to manage and facilitate safe crew change at the Port of Singapore. Prior to the MPA, Mr. Goh held various managerial positions in the private sector, including as General Manager at MP Offshore, where he oversaw the commercial, operational and technical management of offshore support
vessels. He was also the Marine Operations Manager i n S i n g a p o r e f o r classification society L l o y d ’ s R e g i s t e r. He holds a Master of Science (Maritime Studies) from N a n y a n g Te c h n o l o g i c a l Mr. Goh Chung Hun University and a Class 1 Certificate of Competency in Marine Engineering. Mr. S.S Teo, Executive Chairman, said: “We are pleased to welcome Chung Hun to PIL with his wealth of experience in the public and private maritime sector. Effective fleet management is at the core of PIL. This includes the health, safety and well-being of our seafarers which has always been, and will continue to be at the top of our priorities, especially during this Covid-19 period. I trust that Chung Hun will be a worthy torch-bearer for these founding principles. We would also like to thank Captain Minhas for his over 17 years of dedicated service to PIL. In his most recent role as General Manager of Fleet Division, among other achievements, he was instrumental in streamlining PIL's fleet management processes, improving the monitoring of vessels and ensuring PIL’s compliance with IMO sulphur regulations. PIL would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

This direct connectivity from the Inland Container Depots (ICD’s) to the terminal will help in expanding the exports of commodities such as, handicrafts and guar gum to the global markets from the region and extend the capacity and competency of a quick turnaround in domestic and global trade.

CSC unveils TURANT app for real-time temperature tracking of pharma shipments MUMBAI: Cargo Service Center (CSC), India’s premier air cargo handling company, has launched the TURANT app, which provides realtime temperature tracking of pharmaceutical shipments inside the terminal that departs from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) offering end-to-end visibility. The app was unveiled during a virtual press meet organised by Cargo Service Centre. End-to-end supply chain visibility has always been a concern for pharma shippers and the COVID-19 crisis magnified this need. Addressing this key concern, the TURANT app, which also means ‘immediate’ in Hindi, will provide customers all critical real-time information including temperature of the shipment during transit, all accessible on a mobile phone screen. “This is the first time in history that a cargo terminal is providing its customers with real time temperature tracking and status of shipments. CSC is the first in the world to provide you with this level of transparency. And this is just the beginning; going forward, you can expect a lot more innovation from our team,” Tushar Jani, Chairman, CSC on the launch of the app. The Pharma Excellence Centre in Mumbai has been temperature-mapped and the temperature of the terminal is
being monitored electronically. The TURANT app provides this information right into the palm of your hands. All you need to do is to download the app. Once installed on your phone, you need to select the airport, enter the Air-Way-bill number and the shipment becomes visible through the app. “At CSC, we have used the latest technology and innovation to bring transparency of our operations to our customers. Therefore, we have launched TURANT, which is CSC’s real-time temperature mapping and tracking app. This app will be an absolute blessing for all the quality heads in the various pharma industries,” said Pramod Pereira, AGM-Quality, Training & Procedures, CSC. Applauding CSC for its pathbreaking initiative, Manoj Singh, Senior Vice President and Head – Cargo, MIAL said, “Pharma contributes 37 percent to MIAL’s cargo business and CSC has played a key role in the cargo handling. We are going to bring many more innovations in the times ahead.” MIAL, which handles the largest portion of Export Import pharmaceutical air cargo movements in the country, has been handling 40 to 50 tonnes of vaccines per day. It has witnessed 22 percent growth in pharma imports, and till date, 32 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been transported to across 20 countries worldwide and to 30 destinations within India.

Private firms bid for building, operating cargo terminals NEW DELHI: Leading Indian firms like the Adani group, and international players in the logistics sector, have bid for the contract to build and operate private cargo terminals at more than a dozen locations across five states along the upcoming Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC). The Requests for Proposal for Private Freight Terminals on the DFC were opened recently, days after 25 companies, representing all major players in the logistics sector had participated in the pre-bid meeting for the tender, which will be finalised end of next month after evaluation. The locations where the private players want to build the terminals include Dharuhera in Haryana; Phulera, and Kishangarh in Rajasthan; Dadri and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh; Palghar in Maharashtra; Sanjali in Gujarat; and Chawapel in Punjab.
In the two pre-bid meetings before this, companies like Adani Logistics, CONCOR, DP World, JM Baxi, PSA International, TVS Logistics, Gateway Rail Freight had taken part, officials said. Officials said that in the plan envisaged, private players will build freight terminals on their own land close to the stations along the freight cor ridors, enhancing the cargo handling capacity of the network. The private company will be given the contract for around 30 years to handle freight loading and unloading for the DFC. In the first 10 years, the winning company will have exclusive rights to handle cargo at the station following which it will be opened to other users as well. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month inaugurated two stretches, one each at the Eastern and the Western arms of the DFC. The entire DFC will be
commissioned next year by June. More sections will keep getting commissioned in the coming months. There is 61 per cent progress in the Bhaupur to Deen Dayal Upadhyay section, and 180 km of the 402 km will be complete by December 21 this year. The 401-km Khurja to Sanhewal section has had around 39% progress. It will be done by June 2022. A 46-km link between Khurja (Eastern) and Dadri (Western) will be ready by March 2021. By December 2021, Kanpur-Khurja area will get connected to the western ports of Kandla, Mundra, and Pipava, via the 127-km Dadri-Rewari section in the Western arm, its target advanced by several months. In the Western DFC, sections up to Palanpur in Gujarat will be opened by March, then to Makarpura (by March 2022) and finally to JNPT (June 2022).
Merchant fleet hits 100,000-ship milestone, says Clarksons reserch NEW DELHI: This month the global merchant fleet of vessels above 100 gt has reached the 100,000-ship milestone for the first time, according to data from Clarksons Research. Across 100,001 ships in total, the average size of a vessel is 21,355 dwt, and the average age is 21.7 years. The estimated total value of the
world fleet is $976bn across 2.1bn dwt and 1.4bn gt. Asian owners account for 46% of the deadweight, with European owners controlling 30% of the fleet. Shipping crossed the 70,000 mark in February 2006, 15 years ago almost to the day. The average vessel size has increased by 57% since then.
FASTag mandatory for all vehicles, violators to pay double toll fee NEW DELHI: Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry announced all lanes in the fee plazas on the National Highways shall be declared as 'FASTag lane of the fee plaza' with effect from the midnight of 15 February, informed an official statement. Any vehicle not fitted
with FASTag or vehicles without valid, functional FASTag entering into the FASTag lane of the fee plaza shall pay a double fee applicable to that category. The Ministry had mandated fitment of FASTag in M and N categories of motor vehicles with effect from January 1.

India opens new trade route to aid Nepal get fertiliser from Bangladesh NEW DELHI: In what could prove to be a big relief for Nepal, New Delhi has decided to open transit facility through Indian territory for fertiliser trade between Dhaka and Kathmandu. According to All India Radio’s news division, at present, 27,000 metric ton of fertiliser will be exported to Nepal through the Rohanpur-Singhabad rail transit route. Another lot of 25,000 metric tonne of fertiliser is likely to be exported subsequently, it said. A report carried earlier by The Kathmandu Post noted that fertiliser shortage is a perennial problem in Nepal. It added that “despite tall promises the Oli administration has miserably failed in ensuring the timely supply of fertilisers.” Adequate supply of fertiliser would be critical for Nepal’s agriculture sector. The agriculture sector, much like in India, plays a critical role in the overall economic growth story of the Himalayan country. A source said that India will look at all feasible options to boost regional trade and connectivity. The complex mechanisms in place for movement of goods at the integrated check posts
(ICPs) could also be looked at. “We are looking to boost ties with Nepal. Deepening of ties will benefit both countries, we have a lot in common with Nepal especially when it comes to culture and business,” Gopal Krishna Agarwal, BJP’s national spokesperson said. Kathmandu’s long pending demand has been to set up a freight corridor through India that connects Nepal and Bangladesh and also gives the landlocked Himalayan country access to a sea port. “Two aspects are important. First, building of mini hydropower projects must be taken up, much like what India has with Bhutan. This will increase power supply to India. Second, is the construction of a dedicated freight corridor, which has been one of the major demands of the Kathmandu administration,” Agarwal pointed out. Sources said that the Narendra Modi government is also looking to push the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) initiative, to boost connectivity in the region, which in turn will expand trade among the countries. The BBIN initiative has the support of all the
member countries, one of the sources said. “India wants peace in the region, as do other countries. Modi government is keen to boost greater cooperation between the countries in this region. The Centre has already underlined the need to focus on neighbours’ first policy to build a relationship which is fruitful for the entire region,” a source said. India-Nepal relations A study by Observer Research Foundation (ORF) said that the primary way to reset relations between India and Nepal is by increasing interdependence. While Nepal is more dependent on India, “it is all the more necessary to balance such relations.” “To increase India’s dependence on Nepal, it is necessary to place the increase in trade and economic activities at the forefront. Interdependence between Nepal and India is the secret to reset the relations between the neighbours,” the study said. Notably, along with several other countries, Nepal received one million Covid 19 vaccines from India under the grant assistance, despite the increase in trust deficit between the two countries.

Exports rise 6% in January, Trade deficit narrows to $14.54 bn Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Oil imports are down 27.7% at $9.40 billion. Non-oil imports up 15.8% at $38.50 billion. Gold imports up 154.7% at $4.04 billion. Electronic goods imports up 17.4% at $5.28 billion. Petroleum product exports down 32.1% at $2.16 billion. Gems & Jewellery exports down 1.3% at $2.84 billion. Engineering goods export up 18.8% at $7.39 billion.
Major commodity groups of import showing negative growth in January 2021 over the corresponding month of last year are petroleum, crude and other products, transport equipment, fertilisers, metalliferous ores and other materials, and machinery, electrical and non-electrical, the data stated.
MV Anastasia crew reaches India after crew change in Japan MUMBAI: Sixteen Indian crew members of MV Anastasia have reached India after the shipping company arranged a crew change in Japan on 10th February. They arrived in Mumbai yesterday. The ship was stuck at Chinese port of Caofeidian since September 2020. MV Anastasia and MV Jag Anand were transporting coal from Australia to China as they were stuck in the Chinese ports. Both the ships were refused permission by Chinese authorities to offload their cargo and leave, citing Covid-19related restrictions. However, on 24 December, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that other ships, which arrived after these two, were allowed to offload cargo and leave, and the reasons for this were unclear. It created more confusion regarding the Chinese system. Around mid-December last year, China officially announced a ban on Australian coal imports as tensions between the two countries intensified, unofficial signs of which could be traced back to June 2020. The seafarers caught in the middle of a geopolitical feud between China and Australia faced great mental and physical sufferings. A spokesperson from Mumbai-based Great Eastern Shipping Company Ltd, which owns Jag Anand, told Prasar Bharati that they were mainly waiting for a
go-ahead from the Chinese cargo owner for moving away from Chinese coast, without which they would have faced legal action. Given the grave humanitarian situation, Indian Ambassador in China Vikram Misri had personally taken up the issue of Jag Anand with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister. Indian Embassy in Beijing had been constantly trying to break this deadlock while Chinese foreign ministry put the onus on freight forwarder for not allowing the ships to leave the port, adding that they are in touch with Indian side.
Economic activity on verge of normality, GDP to grow 13.5% in FY22: Report MUMBAI: Economic activity is on the "verge of normality" after getting severely hit by COVID-19 and Indian GDP will grow at 13.5 per cent in FY22, a Japanese brokerage said recently. The Nomura India Business Resumption Index (NIBRI) picked up to 98.1 (provisionally) for the week ending February 14, from 95.9 in the preceding week, Nomura said. The economic impact of the pandemic is set to lead the country's GDP to contract by 7.7 per cent in FY21, and the RBI expects the GDP to jump by 10.5 per cent in Fy22. The brokerage said it expects the real GDP to contract by 6.7 per cent in FY21, followed by a growth of 13.5 per cent in FY22. For the week to February 14, mobility indicators continue to pick up, it said. While power demand fell by 0.1 per cent week-on-week,
this may be likely due to a payback from the stellar 9.6 per cent rise during the preceding week, it said, adding that labour participation rate inched down to 40.5 per cent from 40.9 per cent in the previous week. The brokerage said its proprietary index has been on an uptrend since hitting its trough during the strict lockdown in April last year. "This supports our view that sequential momentum remains positive and that year-on-year GDP growth likely moved into positive territory, at 1.5 per cent in Q4 2020 (from 7.5 per cent in Q3) and 2.1 per cent in Q1 2021," it said. The continued recovery in the index is strongly predicated on containment of the pandemic, the brokerage said, adding it is upbeat on growth prospects due to the confluence of fiscal activism, the lagged effects of easy financial conditions, base effects and faster global growth.
Ban on dry fish export to Sri Lanka affects fishermen, exporters NEW DELHI: Fishermen have appealed to the Central government to immediately hold talks with the Sri Lankan authorities and help lift the ban imposed on dry fish exports from India to the island nation as nearly 15,000 metric tons of dry fish valued at Rs. 500 crore was lying in warehouses since November 2020. AITUC fishermen association state president S Muruganandam told on Monday that the Sri Lankan government had banned import of dry fish from India since November 2020. The fishermen in coastal districts in Tamil Nadu, who ventured into the sea, procured superior quality fish, meant exclusively for exports. Almost 20 to 25% of the produce was bought by the exporters, who processed and exported them as dry fish to Sri Lanka and other countries. Among the dry fish, “maasi”, “katta” and “nethili” among others were the most sought varieties in Sri Lanka, which the importers ordered regularly with the export firms here.
However, the island nation’s ban had crippled the exports since November last year and the goods were lying in Thoothukudi, he said. Though no reasons were assigned by officials for the ban, Mr. Muruganandam claimed that dry fish was exported by Pakistan and Maldives to Sri Lanka. Before November 2020, the Sri Lankan government imposed additional taxes on the imports of dry fish from India and subsequently they banned it. “It is almost 100 days now and our goods are lying in the warehouses in Thoothukudi,” he added. As a result, many fishermen were yet to get their wages due to them and some of the exporters too have been unable to keep up their financial commitments with the banks, he said and hoped that the Centre intervened with the Sri Lankan authorities and lifted the ban. Moreover, the fishermen also expected the Tamil Nadu government to give them adequate space in the warehouse to stock the dry fish without imposing charges until the goods were exported.
