Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust receives Regulator’s approval for hiking rates NAVI MUMBAI: India’s Premium Container Port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has managed to win a significant rate hike from the tariff regulator. The Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP) has approved a rate hike of 19.03 per cent in vessel related charges (VRC) and 22.56 per cent each in container, bulk and liquid cargo related charges for a three-year period beginning August 3.
The rates approved by the regulator will be indexed annually to the wholesale price index (WPI), a measure of costs, to the extent of 100 per cent. Vessel related charges comprise port dues, berth hire and pilotage and are collected from ships calling at the port. The rates approved by the regulator are ceiling rates and the port has the flexibility to charge lower rates, according to Government rules.

Evergreen raises capital for acquiring & modernizing its fleet TA I WA N : E v e r g r e e n Marine Corporation will turn to overseas investors to raise US$300 million in capital to cover the company’s operations. The company announced on 9 July that it is issuing unsecured convertible bonds to maintain its long-term competitiveness, as well as to secure capital for the future deliveries of newbuildings to modernise its fleet. It is the first time that Evergreen has tapped investors abroad. Proceeds from the five-year bonds will go towards working capital for bunker purchases, ordering newbuildings, and acquiring vessels on finance lease. The interest rate for the bonds has not been fixed. Including vessels on finance lease, Evergreen has 61 newbuildings that will be delivered by the end of 2022, comprising ten ships of 23,000 TEU, eighteen 12,000 TEU,
fourteen 2,500 TEU and nineteen 1,800 TEU ships. The company’s directors said that this capital-intensive undertaking is among the reasons for issuing the bonds. As a member of Ocean Alliance, the second largest of container shipping alliances, Evergreen said it expects that the newbuildings will boost its competitiveness. Evergreen added that the newbuildings have reduced fuel consumption and with its accurate shipping schedule, can maintain service standards. The company is the seventh largest container carrier, with a combined capacity of around 1.23 million TEU, from 108 owned ships and 82 chartered vessels. The bond issue comes after Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications disbursed total loans of TW$16.5 billion (US$550 million) to Evergreen and Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation.

INSTRUCTION NO. 12/2020-CUSTOMS Sub.: Requirement of AGMARK certification prior to import of Blended edible vegetable oils-reg The undersigned is directed to refer to the letter of Director (Imports), Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on the above mentioned subject (copy below). 2. Vide this letter, it has been clarified that import of Blended Edible Vegetable Oils (BEVO) without prior AGMARK certification is not allowed in India and further the Blended Edible Oils (BEVO) shall also comply with the rules and regulations made under FSS Act, 2006. The above mentioned compliance is to be ensured by the field formations. 3. Any issues faced in implementation of this instruction may be brought to the notice of the Board. ADVISORY Sub.: Requirement of AGMARK Certification prior to import of Blended Edible Vegetable Oils (BEVO)- reg. The sub-regulation 2.3.14 (11) of Food Safety and Standard (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 provides that "(11) The Blended Edible Vegetable Oils shall not be sold in loose form. It shall be sold in sealed package weighing not more than 15 Kilograms. The container having blended edible vegetable oil shall be tamper proof. It shall also not he sold under the common or generic name of the oil used in the blend but shall be sold as "Blended Edible Vegetable Oil". The sealed package shall be sold or offered for sale Only under AGMARK certification mark bearing the label declarations as provided in the Regulations besides other labelling requirements under the Regulation 2.4.2 of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) regulations, 2011." 2. In view of above it is clarified that Import of Blended Edible Vegetable Oils (BEVO) without AGMARK certification is not allowed in India and further the Blended Edible Vegetable Oils (BEVO) shall also comply with the rule and regulations made under FSS Act, 2006. 3. All Authorised Officers are directed to ensure that the Blended Edible Vegetable Oils (BEVO) without AGMARK certification shall not be cleared thorough their respective point of entries and shall follow all procedure as mentioned in FSS (Import) Regulations 2017 before clearance. For strong, resilient and ‘Aatma Nirabhar Bharat’ Trade Bodies have an important role to play: Piyush Goyal MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Covid-19 has changed the world but Indian people, businesses and industries did not succumb to the crisis, and stood out with a unique trait of resilience and constantly evolving the new ways to deal with the situation and turning the crisis into opportunity, said Union Minister for Commerce and Industry & Railways, Piyush Goyal in New Delhi. Shri Goyal was delivering the keynote address at the 184th AGM of Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry via video conferencing with the office bearers and members of one of oldest chambers of the country. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Goyal said that, India should focus on Investment, Infrastructure, and
Innovation in the post-covid world, by increasing the production, improving quality of products, trying higher economies of scale, smooth logistics channels, competitive pricing and using innovative practices. The government and trade bodies must work together to boost the growth, to bringing more employment, jobs to youth and engaging with the world with strength and not closing the door for the world but being self-sufficient “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat “ . Our Indian industries specialised in the specific sectors like auto parts, leather, pharma, footwear, and marine products, have huge potential to promote Indian manufacturing. “I invite Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry to help and contribute in the
efforts of the Government for improving and simplifying Ease of Doing Business indices and building a robust mechanism for single window clearances and self-regulation structures for industries,”, said Shri Piyush Goyal. Shri Goyal said that for strong and resilient India, trade bodies have an important role to play. He added that 184th AGM of Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industr y marks an important milestone as one of the oldest trade bodies in the country. Adani Logistics moves 1st Container vessel from India to Bangladesh through Inland Waterways • Majority of current bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh is taking place through Land Custom Stations at Petrapole (India) and Benapole (Bangladesh). • This connectivity will help exporters/ importers from both the countries to safely ship their cargo throughout the year using inland water transport. Cont’d. from Pg. 1 T h e b a r g e “MV Pruthvi” carrying 45 TEUs (about 1,250 MT) of sponge iron was flagged off on 30th June 2020 from Haldia Docks for its maiden voyage from Haldia to Dhaka on Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). Post receipt of its Let Export Order, the barge sailed on 5th July 2020 from Haldia and completed its voyage in 7 days. Adani Logistics Limited in association with Five Star Logistics Private Limited is moving this first consignment of Rashmi Cement Ltd. and Orissa Metaliks Pvt. Ltd. The India-Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Trade and Transit (PIWTT) was signed in 1972 to allow free movement of goods between India and Bangladesh through specified routes linking domestic cargo movement between West Bengal, Assam and Tripura via Bangladesh as well as export-import cargo movement from India to Bangladesh. Government of India in recent years has strongly supported the development and commercialization of Inland Waterways in India. Strengthening of PIWTT from time to time by both India and Bangladesh clearly indicates the vision for future trade between these two countries as well as to North Eastern States. The success of landmark container export cargo consignment has provided importers and exporters of India and Bangladesh an alternative to roadways and railways. Currently, majority of the exports and imports through West Bengal region to Bangladesh is taking place through Pe t r a p o l e ( I n d i a ) a n d B e n a p o l e (Bangladesh). In fact, Petrapole is one of the largest Land Customs Station (LCS) in Asia handling a trade of more than US$ 2.5 billion. “Since last year, our team is working on offering commercially viable logistics
solutions using Inland Waterways. Previously, we have successfully completed the domestic containerized movement between Haldia - Patna on NW1 and Haldia – Guwahati on NW2 (using IBPR). The success of containerized movement from Haldia to Guwahati on NW2 (using IBPR) has generated keen interest with the importers/ exporters of both India and Bangladesh to extend its usage for Export Import cargo movement. One vessel movement is equivalent to 64 or more trucks. Thus Inland Waterways provides a competitive alternative to current road based movement of goods through Petrapole ICP. Containerized movement of sponge iron is a safer alternative as compared to carrying the cargo in bulk/break bulk which has also been appreciated by industry.” said Capt. Anil Kishore Singh, CEO – Inland Waterways of Adani Logistics. Pre COVID-19 lockdown, the ICP at Pe t r a p o l e u s e d t o h a n d l e a b o u t 500-550 trucks from India and about 100-150 trucks from Bangladesh every day. Since past few years, exporters/ importers of both the nations are looking for alternative transportation options to avoid congestion, delays and multiple handling of cargo at Petrapole ICP (which shoots up the cost). Bulk commodities such as Fly Ash, Stone Aggregates, and Project Cargo etc. are already being moved from India to Bangladesh using inland waterways. Containerized cargo movement is an essential addition for making inland waterways an eligible
candidate for high value goods too. Though both India and the Bangladesh Governments has identified Petrapole – Benapole land border stations as key export-import gateway for bilateral trade and are working together to provide every possible infrastructure. Ms. Riva Ganguly Das, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh welcomed the movement of first containerized cargo export from India to Bangladesh using Inland waterways. She said that “India and Bangladesh had recently signed the 2nd Addendum to Protocol on Inland Water Trade and Transit on 20th May 2020 which included two new routes, five new Ports of Call and two extended Ports of Call including Summit Alliance Port Limited (SAPL), Mukhtarpur in Bangladesh. Connectivity provided by the existing and the newly added protocol routes provides excellent opportunity for expansion of our bilateral trade besides which, in the present Covid-19 scenario it provides economical, faster and safer mode of transport for business communities of both the countries and will also have environmental benefits for the region.”

Seaborne trade to contract by 1bn tonnes in 2020: Clarksons LONDON: Seaborne trade is set to drop by 1bn in 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic according to Clarksons, but there are signs the industry is passing “peak” impact. In a half year assessment of the impact of the pandemic on the shipping industry Steve Gordon, managing director of Clarksons Research said: “The severity of the Covid-19 economic “shock” on the shipping industry is becoming clearer: we estimate seaborne trade fell by 10.6% y-o-y in May and our annual projections suggest trade will contract by 5.6% across 2020, representing 1bn tonnes of “lost” trade
and the sharpest decline for over 35 years.” In a sign that the industry is past the peak impact daily global port call activity index was down 7.4% in June year-on-year, compared to 9.9% down year-on-year in May. Gordon noted that port activity in China had normalised. “Our range of recovery scenarios illustrate that huge multi-year risks remain and signal a continued difficult and ‘bumpy’ road ahead, but also the potential for further examples of disruption upside: perhaps “windows” of improved rates as markets deal with inefficiencies and large
swings in month to month demand.” The shipbuilding sector has seen a 20% decline in deliveries year-on-year but is now seeing improving productivity. “ We h a v e a l s o u p d a t e d o u r comparison with the situation during the financial crisis: potentially a significantly deeper initial impact but sharper rebound; a smaller newbuild orderbook (10% of fleet not 50%); lower pre-disruption trade growth; better capitalized banks; different megatrends. Trade with Bangladesh opens doors for India's non-basmati rice exports KOLKATA: The resumption of trade with Bangladesh through the West Bengal border has raised hopes among India’s non-basmati rice traders of getting fresh orders from the neighbouring country. Trucks carrying rice are currently going through the Petrapole-Benapole border, fulfilling orders which were placed prior to the Covid-19 outbreak. “ Bangladesh largely buys nonbasmati rice. We have come to know that Bangladesh will import rice from India this year,” said Vinod Kaul, executive director, All India Rice Exporters’ Association. “We are getting in touch with
the Indian embassy in Bangladesh and Bangladesh embassy in New Delhi to get a clearer picture on this issue.” India had exported 7,599,552.15 metric tonnes of non-basmati rice worth Rs 21,184.85 crore in 2018-19. Traders said rice millers in Bangladesh were demanding high prices for rice that they would provide to the government warehouses. “Rice consumption has increased in Bangladesh as people are staying indoors due to the coronavirus outbreak. Eating out has stopped. This is increasing the demand for rice in the country. We are now fulfilling our old orders which are being sent to
Bangladesh now,” said Suraj Agarwal, CEO, Tirupati Agri Trade. Agarwal said a decision from the Bangladesh government on import of rice from India is expected by the end of July. Bangladesh has imposed an import duty of 55% on rice, but traders said the government is likely to bring down import duty on rice shortly. Rice millers in Bangladesh are not providing rice to the government warehouses at a fixed rate, said traders. The food directorate of Bangladesh procured 0.34 million tonnes of the staple till July 5 and the target is to procure 19.5 million tonnes by August 31, they said.
Afghan Exports to India through Wagah border allowed by Pakistan AMRITSAR: Pakistan will allow Afghanistan to send goods to India using the Wagah border from July 15. The decision, which is part of Islamabad’s commitment under Pakistan-Afghanistan Transit Trade Agreement, is expected to boost Afghanistan’s exports to India. “A t t h e s p e c i a l r e q u e s t o f t h e government of Afghanistan and with a view to facilitating its transit trade, Pakistan has decided to resume Afghan exports through Wagah border crossing from July 15 after implementing coronavir us (COVID -19) related protocols,” a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan said. Both Pakistan and India had suspended trade through the Wagah border in March to deal with the pandemic challenge.
Speaking in support of the decision, Pakistan P rime Minister ’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq said, “We are moving ahead with promoting economic activity on both sides of the border. The COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures are slowing us down a bit but our direction is right.” Business groups has welcomed this decision. Lack of official warmth however was not reflected among the Indian business groups that welcomed the decision as a resumption of old trade practices in South Asia. A statement issued by the Confederation of International Chambers of Commerce and Industry from Amritsar said orders have already been placed for pomegranates and other Afghan fruits
and dry fruits and the supplies are expected to continue till the festive season in India. It said at least 8-10 trucks are expected to arrive at the Wagah border daily. The announcement from Pakistan has come at a time when Afghanistan’s melon harvesting season is at its peak and the availability of the Indian market is expected to help its economy. “The current festival season is on the anvil and stockists are keen on offering fresh traditional items to the customers. India and especially Amritsar had been buying large quantities of these goods from Afghanistan for many years, before Partition and even later,” said Ashok Sethi, Director of the Confederation of International Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Amritsar.
Singapore Tops list followed by London, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Dubai for Top Port Cities Globally : Baltic Exchange LONDON: The Baltic Exchange, in collaboration with Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, has published the 2020 Xinhua-Baltic Inter national Shipping Centre Development (ISCD) Index. The index, in its seventh edition, provides an independent ranking of the performance of the world’s largest cities that offer port and shipping business services. Based on objective factors including port throughput and infrastructure; depth and breadth of professional maritime support services; as well as the general business environment, the latest report shows: The top 5 international shipping centres remain the same as 2019,
although with some movement. Singapore tops the list for the seventh consecutive year followed by London, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Dubai. London and Dubai are the only top 5 international shipping centres outside Asia, with London moving up one spot into second place. Continued rise in Middle East and Mediterranean locations with Dubai retaining fifth place while Athens rose to eighth place. Singapore maintained its position as the most important shipping hub in the Asia-Pacific region, ranking first for seven consecutive years with its advantages of geographical location,
shipping industry ecosystem and supportive gover nment policies. London, with advantages accruing from providing high-end shipping finance, insurance, and legal services, has climbed back to the second place after dropping to third place in 2018 and 2019. Dubai, as the pre-eminent shipping hub in the Middle East, ranked fifth for the third consecutive year. Rotterdam and Hamburg have also retained their positions since 2018, ranking sixth and seventh respectively. Benefiting from an improving business environment, Athens rose to eighth. New York-New Jersey slipped by one place, while Tokyo rose one place, returning to the ranks of the top 10.

Record uptake for Maersk’s mobile app in India amidst COVID-19 pandemic Accelerating digital transformation, Maersk’s user-friendly and customer oriented mobile app witnesses highest usage amongst customers in India Cont’d. from Pg. 1
With over 4,000 users, India topped the charts globally amongst the countries where Maersk’s customers are actively using the mobile app. Over 1.8 million actions by customers were recorded on the app in the second quarter of 2020 (April to June). These were more than double of those recorded in the first quarter of 2020 (January to March). These include any action performed by users on the app like booking, tracking, checking schedules, live support etc. “As the pandemic spread across geography, our, as well as most of our customers’ operations, shifted bases to their employees’ homes. It then became imperative for the customers to adopt the digital tools for carrying out businesses from the comforts of their homes. Having invested in digital transformation over the last few years, we could provide this immediately to our customers” said Steve Felder, Managing Director Maersk South Asia.” Deeper analysis of the activities shows that ‘Maersk Spot’-related searches grew 10-fold during second quarter of 2020. Maersk Spot is a digital solution offered for customers transacting on short-term contracts which revolves around guaranteed loading for customers’ cargo and transparent upfront pricing. Customers booking cargo on Maersk Spot also get benefits of hinterland coverage either by road or rail as well value-added services such as Maersk Value Protect and Customs House Brokerage. “During the last few months, we have seen that almost 80% of our customers in India, who are transacting on short term contracts have started using the Maersk Spot digital solution. This is a great proof point of our strategy to invest in customer-oriented digital platforms that bring higher reliability for our customers”, said Bhavik Mota, Head of Products, Maersk South Asia. He further added, “After the initial launch of Maersk Spot for
ocean shipping, we are now also offering the solution for landside logistics and thus offering a true integrated logistics solution to our Indian customers at their fingertips.” The Maersk.com website is one of the largest B2B websites in the world handling almost $20 billion in transactions in 2019. The Maersk app is available in The App Store and in Google Play.
CMA CGM launches new Round The Africa service MARSEILLE: CMA CGM has introduced its new product Round The Africa (RTA) service in complement of the current existing 31 services to Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to improve its service offer to West Africa strategic markets. Round The Africa provides direct connections from Asia to Senegal and Sierra Leone. The French carrier says Dakar is served weekly from Ningbo in 35 days and from Nansha in 32 days, while Freetown is reached in 35 days from Nansha. In addition, the service offer to Tema is improved with three weekly departures. The new service also provides a direct service to China, with Shanghai to be reached in 29 days from Abidjan, 31 days from Tema, 36 days from Freetown and 39 days from Dakar. CMA CGM will deploy 11 vessels of 4,200TEU nominal
capacity and the first ship on the service will start its journey on 25 July from Shanghai. The rotation of Round The Africa: Shanghai – Ningbo – Nansha – Singapore – Malta – Tanger – Dakar – Freetown – Tema – Abidjan – Port Kelang – Shanghai.
Wan Hai and Interasia Lines launch new intra-Asia service TAIPEI: Wan Hai and Interasia Lines will launch a new joint service, which will connect Taiwan to Vietnam and Thailand, under the name TVT (Taiwan – Vietnam – Thailand). Each carrier will deploy one 1,200TEU container vessel on the TVT service, which will run on 14 days round trip with the following port rotation: Taipei – Taichung – Cat Lai, Ho Chi Minh – Bangkok – Laem Chabang – Taipei. The maiden voyage will commence from Taipei on 24 July 2020.
Wan Hai has announced that its current KVS service will add Kaohsiung call from 23 July in order to optimise its service coverage. KVS service’s new port rotation: Incheon – Kwangyang – Busan – Ulsan – Taipei – Taichung – Kaohsiung –Cat Lai, Ho Chi Minh – Port Kelang (North Port) –Port Kelang (West Port) –Cat Lai, Ho Chi Minh – Kaohsiung –Taichung – Taipei – Incheon TVT service will be the forth string service, which connects Taiwan and Ho Chi Minh and the third string service, which connects Taiwan and Thailand, according to Wan Hai. In May Wan Hai and Interasia re-launched its China – Vietnam – Thailand service with their partner Sealand.
