Railways creates world record by running 1st Double Stack Container Train in high rise OHE NEW DELHI: Indian Railways creates a new world benchmark by commissioning 1st high rise Over Head Equipment(OHE), which has contact wire height of 7.57 metre and successfully run double stack containers in electrified territory on Western Railway. This tremendous achievement is a first of its kind in the entire world and will also boost the ambitious mission of Green India as a latest green initiative over Indian Railways. With this remarkable development, Indian Railways has proudly become the first Railway to run Double Stack Container train with high reach pantograph in high rise OHE territory, the Operations of which successfully commenced on 10th June, 2020 from Palanpur & Botad stations in Gujarat. The thrust of such kind of initiatives is on innovation, speed and customisation in freight operations. Inspite of time that was lost under Covid Lockdown Ministry is focussing to surpass the last years freight figures. From 1st April 2020 to 10th June 2020 Indian Railways has transported 178.68 million tonnes of commodities through its uninterrupted 24X7 freight trains operations across the country. From 24.03.2020 to 10.06.2020 more than 32.40 lacs wagons carried supplies to keep the supply chain functional. Of these, more than 18 lacs wagons carried essential commodities like food grains, salt, sugar, milk, edible oil, onions, fruits & vegetables, petroleum products, coal, fertilizers etc. throughout the country. Paradip International Container Terminal achieves new milestone in Cargo handling
PARADIP: The Paradip International Container Terminal (PICT) has achieved a couple of new cargo handling milestones in last few days. The first was achieved when a Record loading of Hot rolled Coils in a day with around 25,710 MT (1,198 Coils) was handled in a single day
operated on 6th June 2020 by surpassing an earlier record of 21,764 MT. The second was achieved with record handling of Aluminium Ingots with 3,654 MT capacity only with 2 hook operations on 5th June 2020.
NYK’s Response to Covid-19 TOKYO: NYK has implemented a revised work plan effective from June 15. Outline of revised work plan Period: June 15, 2020, until further notice Renewed workstyle: Staff may work from home for a maximum of three days each week in accordance with the below conditions. • To prevent the spread of Covid-19, the percentage of staff working at the office should be less than approximately 50% of the total staff. • If the percentage of staff working at the office becomes
higher, staff should take all means to keep a sufficient distance from each other, such as avoiding face-to-face seating arrangements. • Staff should avoid rush hours when commuting to the office. • Staff should stay and rest at home if any concerns about health, or a fever, arise. • Further, staff should do their utmost to prevent the spread of Covid-19 by following the “10 things to do to reduce person-to-person contact by 80 percent” guidance issued by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare . During the period 1st April 2020 to 10th June, 2020 Railways loaded 12.74 million tonnes of food grains as
compared to 6.79 million tonnes in the same period last year. Apart from this, from 22.03.2020 to 10.06.2020 total 3,897 Parcel Trains have
also been run out by Indian Railways of which 3,790 are time-tabled trains. Total 1,39,196 tonnes of consignment have been loaded in these Parcel Trains.
Clear indication Singapore wants to diversify supply chains, needs better connectivity: Indian envoy NEW DELHI: India and Singapore will have to improve connectivity in a post-corona world to boost bilateral trade ties, the Indian envoy to the Southeast Asian nation said, asserting there is a "clear indication to us" that they want to diversify their supply chains and India is a priority. High Commissioner to Singapore Jawed Ashraf said connectivity is an important way of improving tourism and investment. "Once we come out of this crisis, which will affect the aviation sector the most, we would need to take a look at how we work on connectivity projects." Speaking from Singapore on 'IndiaSingapore Business Promotion,
Challenges and Opportunities - Post Covid-19' at a webinar organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ashraf said India can look to bolster ties with the city-state in manufacturing phar maceuticals, electronics and in health technology and food processing sectors. "In exports, there is a clear indication to us that Singapore is saying 'we want to diversify supply chain and you guys are priority'," he said. "The immediate area we were looking at was processed and fresh foods, so we are talking about fruits and vegetables, marine products and also dairy products and they (Singapore) want to diversify... and we need to work in this area," he said.
Ashraf said India needs to see how to leverage ties with Singapore on two objectives: to achieve self-reliance and to be a part of the global supply chain. Also, India is an area of high priority as Singapore looks at the evolving geopolitics, evolving trade tensions and the future of supply chains and markets, he pointed. "So I can see a great opportunity for India as long as we are able to create n e c e s s a r y c o n d i t i o n s . We m u s t leverage their capacity to build industrial parks in India through which they can also bring in investments. Another area is developing logistics because Singapore has a great advantage in terms of logistics," the Indian envoy said.
Garments exports: Vietnam-EU FTA to hurt Indian players CHENNAI: Indian garment exporters, already battered by the Covid-19 outbreak, are in for further trouble, as major competitor Vietnam has forged a free trade agreement (FTA) with the EU. Once the pact comes into force, likely in July, Vietnam will get duty-free access to the EU market in garments (apart from dozens of other products), while such supplies from India will continue to be taxed at 9.6%. This will further harden the challenge for India to even hold on to its market share in garment exports, let alone grab the space being gradually vacated by China. The EU typically accounts for about 30% of India’s garment exports. Of course, with the UK out of the EU now, the bloc’s share in India’s supplies will drop. India’s garment exports dropped 4% year-on-year in FY20 to $15.5 billion. Importantly, all of India’s key competitors – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Cambodia and Pakistan – currently ship out apparel to the EU at zero duty, as they continue to get preferential treatment. Supplies of certain types of apparel from Cambodia, of course, may be taxed from August, as the EU has reportedly withdrawn preferential tariff treatment to products making up for one-fifth of its imports from that country. Still, exporters say Cambodia will continue to gain due to the investments made in the country by the Chinese. While the EU slaps a 12% import duty on Chinese garments, slightly higher than that on India, Beijing undoubtedly remains far more competitive than New Delhi and offers an impressive range of apparels. According to the European Commission data, between 2016 and 2019, Vietnam’s garment exports to the EU went up from 2.61 billion euros to 3.29 billion euros, while India’s
continued to decline from 4.47 billion euros to 4.31 billion euros. In fact, India was the only country among five key exporters (the others being Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia and Pakistan) whose garments supplies to the EU dropped in the past four years. While China’s apparel exports to the EU dropped marginally from 25.21 billion euros to 25.03 billion euros, India’s fall was sharper. This suggests that while China has been seeking to gradually shift from labour-intensive industries like garments to capitalintensive and high-tech ones, India clearly hasn’t gained from this; rather, it has ceded its share in exports to its peers in recent years. Even Cambodia’s exports to the EU rose from 2.71 billion euros in 2016 to 3.30 billion euros in 2019, Bangladesh’s rose from 12.62 billion euros to 15 billion euros and Pakistan’s increased from 2.23 billion euros to 2.70 billion euros.
Labour shortage and scarcity of containers at ports hit India’s rice exports KO L K ATA : L a b o u r s h o r t a g e a n d scarcity of containers at the ports has hit India’s rice exports to Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. While Africa imports non-basmati rice from India, the Gulf countries rely on India’s basmati rice for their domestic consumption. “Trucks are standing at the Deendayal and Mundra ports for a minimum seven days as there is no labour to unload the trucks,” said Gautam Miglani, owner of LRNK, a Haryana-based basmati rice exporter. “Also, since imports of all products have lessened, containers are not coming to the ports. This is creating a lot of problems for basmati rice exporters. Exports are getting delayed.” Miglani said this year Saudi Arabia and
the UAE have emerged as the biggest buyers of basmati rice. “Exports to Iran have gone down as there are payment issues with the country. Exporters from India are yet to get their payments. Nearly 300,000 tonnes of basmati rice is lying at Iranian ports,” he said. In 2019-20, India had exported 4.4 million tonnes of basmati rice. The problem is not restricted to basmati rice producers. Non-basmati rice producers from West Bengal and Jharkhand are facing a similar problem in shipping cheaper variety rice to Africa. “As migrant workers have left, there is a huge shortage of labourers. The demand from Africa is very strong, yet shipments are being delayed because of labour shortage,” said
Suraj Agarwal, CEO of Tirupati Agri Trade. “Availability of containers at the Kolkata port has improved a bit, but it is yet to become fully normal. Also, due to cyclone Amphan, which had badly hit Kolkata, the sheds of clearing and forwarding agents where the goods are stored have been damaged. That too is delaying exports,” he said. Africa had imported 1.1 million tonnes of rice at an estimated cost of Rs 2,500 crore. They generally buy rice which is priced at Rs 24 -25 per kg. Global trade continues nosedive, UNCTAD forecasts 20% drop in 2020 PARIS: International trade in goods is expected to continue its nosedive in the coming months as economies struggle to recover from lockdown measures used to slow the COVID-19 outbreak. New UNCTAD data published on 11 June show that merchandise trade fell by 5% in the first quarter of the year and point to a 27% drop for the second quarter and a 20% annual decline for 2020. “There is still a lot of uncertainty about the possibility of any economic recovery in the second half of the year,” says Pamela CokeHamilton, UNCTAD’s director of international trade. “International trade is likely to remain below the levels observed in 2019,” she adds, “but how far depends on the pandemic’s evolution and the type and extent of the policies governments adopt as the try to restart their economies.” The latest UNCTAD figures were featured in the first edition of the Global Trade Update, the organization’s new quarterly report providing a comprehensive snapshot of international commerce and the main issues affecting trade flows. An increasingly worrying scenario for developing countries Although the coronavirus-induced trade slowdown has spared no one, forecasts show a particularly rapid deterioration for developing countries. While South-South trade saw a drop of just 2% in the first quarter of the year, UNCTAD data shows a dramatic 14% fall in April. “For developing countries, while declines in exports are likely driven by reduced demand in destination markets, declines in imports may indicate not only reduced demand but also exchange rate movements, concerns regarding debt and a shortage of foreign currency,” the report says. Preliminary data for April suggests the sharpest downturn for South Asia and the Middle East, which could register trade declines of up to 40%. Meanwhile, the East Asia and the Pacific regions appear to have fared best, with trade drops remaining in the single digits both in the first quarter of 2020 as well as in April. China appears to have fared better than other major economies in April, registering 3% growth for exports. But the most recent data indicates that the recovery may be short-lived, as the nation’s imports and exports fell by about 8% in May. Regional trade in 2020

Automotive and energy sectors collapse, agri-foods stabilize The report shows that economic disruptions wrought by COVID19 have affected some sectors significantly more than others. In the first quarter of 2020, textiles and apparel declined by almost 12%, while office machinery and automotive sectors fell by about 8%. In contrast, the value of international trade in the agri-food sector, which has so far been the least volatile, grew by about 2%.
Preliminary data for April indicates further declines in most sectors, with a very sharp contraction in the trade of energy (-40%) and automotive (-50%) products. Significant decreases are also observed in chemicals, machineries and precision instruments, with drops above 10%. On the other hand, office machinery appears to have rebounded in April, largely because of China’s positive export performance. “In general, the variance across sectors,” the report says, “has been driven by decreases in demand and disruptions of supply capacity and global value chains due to COVID-19.” Sectoral trade in 2020

Medical products’ exports more than double A notable side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the increase in demand for medical goods and equipment, such as ventilators, monitors, thermometers, hand sanitizers, protective masks and garments. While the international trade of such goods contracted at the onset of the pandemic, it rebounded in February and March and almost doubled in April 2020, as countries scrambled to secure medical and protective equipment. The flow of imports and exports, the report says, followed the spread of the virus. For example, the first two months of 2020 saw an increase in Chinese domestic demand, resulting in a jump in medical product imports, primarily from Europe and the United States, which had not yet been significantly hit by the pandemic. Meanwhile, Chinese exports of such equipment dropped by 15% as national production shifted towards satisfying domestic need. Data for March shows that at as the pandemic took hold in Europe, imports of medical equipment jumped by 21% in the region while continuing to increase in China (41%). Then in April, as COVID-19 eased its grip on China and continued its spread across the globe, Chinese exports of medical equipment surged by a staggering 338%, driven primarily by exports of protective equipment. The month’s data for the United States reflects the spread of COVID-19 within the nation, with medical product imports increasing by almost 60% while exports declined by approximately 20%. COVID-19 brings unexpected benefits to APM Terminals’ Global TOS roll-out THE HAGUE: When the COVID-19 pandemic struck at the start of this year, delaying a business-critical Terminal Operating System (TOS) upgrade at APM Terminals Los Angeles was simply not an option. Forced to execute the project remotely, the company’s global TOS implementation team has since changed their approach for good. APM Terminals is rolling out Navis N4 to all of its terminals globally, with the goal of having one standardised TOS by the end of 2021. “Adopting a standardised TOS globally brings numerous long-term advantages,” says Patrick Heilig, responsible for the global TOS implementation team. “For example, it enables the sharing of best practises for improved efficiency; the development of in-house expertise that understands our customers and our business; centralised monitoring and support; and faster, cost-effective global development of front-end applications for customers.” In-house implementation team Having its own in-house TOS implementation team is unique in the industry, allowing learnings from each implementation to be passed onto the
next. For example, the migration from a Navis Legacy system to N4 at APM Terminals Port Elizabeth in August last year, benefited from a previous project with the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia. “As this is a joint venture terminal, we were able to learn from PTP and put clear service level agreements into place to mitigate risk,” says Heilig. “We also established clear processes to communicate transparently about the project.” The outcome was that the implementation at APM Terminals Port Elizabeth was one of the company’s most successful yet. Remote working When COVID -19 hit, the team evaluated upcoming projects and identified one that was business critical – a modernization project at the company’s Los Angeles terminal. Due to travel restrictions, lockdowns, and physical distancing restrictions, the team had no alternative but to go ahead and reinvent processes based on 100% remote working. 24-hour support “The team had become comfortable with face-to-face communications and having the global team on site also puts the local team at ease,” explains Mr Heilig. “Working remotely however, we realised that we could actually offer i m p r o v e d s e r v i c e a n d c o n t i n u i t y.
Because our global TOS team are located around the world in different time zones, we could offer support 24 hours per day. The team also had more working hours available as there was no time spent travelling to the location and adapting to local time zones. This also contributes to a significant cost saving.” The lack of face-to-face communication also focussed the team’s communication efforts – something that according to Heilig is, “just as important as the project management and technical implementation. Managing the expectations of stakeholders is half the battle.” Version upgrades ideal candidate for remote implementation Learnings from this experience will be applied to upcoming projects, including major version upgrades across the company’s portfolio and transitioning from Argos to Navis in the company’s Spanish terminals. “Major version upgrades are a great candidate for remote implementation as it requires a small amount of reconfiguration and limited training,” says Heilig. “For the Spanish terminals a much bigger transition is involved requiring extensive training. But we’re now confident that there are large parts of the project that will now be implemented remotely.”
Shipping & Ports Collaboration – Beyond COVID-19 LONDON: The i m p o r t a n c e o f collaboration between all maritime sectors has been thrown into the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic and will be needed more than ever in the recovery phase, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim told a webinar on ship-shore relations. Mr. Lim highlighted ongoing challenges, including the need for crew changeovers for some 150,000 seafarers who need to leave their ships. However, the pandemic has led to intensive collaboration on a digital and virtual basis between the shipping and port communities, as well as with and between Governments and international organizations. Many Governments had acted in collaboration with shipping and ports to address crew change and other issues, but more needed to be done. “I would like to encourage all Governments to pay attention to these issues, which impact not only on shipping but also the global economy and the global supply chain,” Mr. Lim said. The webinar speakers agreed that the
pandemic situation has highlighted the relevance of digitalization and new ways of working, which should continue beyond the immediate crisis situation. One example is electronic data e x c h a n g e , f o r information which needs to be exchanged between ship and shore. Electronic data exchange is mandatory u n d e r I M O ’ s FA L Convention. IMO is looking at ways to support countries to fully implement electronic data, exchange and the recommended single window approach, whereby all data is sent through a single portal. For IMO’s regulatory work, the way ahead may mean holding virtual meetings to ensure the work on important agenda items, including action on climate change and safety issues, is advanced. India's Forex Reserves cross half trillion dollars for the first time MUMBAI: India’s foreign exchange reserves rose $8.2 billion in the week of June 5 and has now crossed the milestone $500 billion mark for the first time in country’s history. Other components of India’s foreign reserves such as its reserves held in gold declined by $329 million in the reporting
week and stood at $32.352 billion, the latest RBI data showed. Separately, SDR and central bank’s reserve position at IMF stood at $1.4 billion and $4.2 billion respectively, in this period. A strong kitty allows the central bank to timely intervene in forward and spot currency markets to arrest any
s l i d e i n r u p e e d e v a l u a t i o n s . Fo r example, the assimilation of reserve with the central bank and subsequent interventions helped the rupee recover by around 2% from a record low of 76.92 witnessed in April 2020. Since then, INR has been quite resilient, trading in the range of 75-76.

Piyush Goyal assures Logistics Industry of significant improvement in coming weeks Addresses Webinar to Logistics Industry stakeholders at helm of Unlock 1.0 YEARS
Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Shri Piyush Goyal touched upon various topics ranging from the problems of importers & exporters, to cargo movement, return of migrant labour and issues at the Ports. Mr. Pawan Agarwal, Special Secretary Logistics was also part of the webinar and is taking active measures towards addressing the concerns brought up during the webinar by attendees. According to the WTO, world trade is expected to fall by 13%-32%, depending on the country. However, it is expected that India will face a lower decline compared to other countries in its merchandise exports. Dr. Sangita Reddy pointed out the numerous initiatives taken by the government, both during Lockdown and in the past few years, that have allowed India to buoy itself. The measures mentioned by Dr. Reddy include the MEIS scheme and extension of Interest equalization, among many other schemes. Shri Piyush Goyal assured the logistics industry of significant improvement in the coming weeks and shared encouraging exports statistics for the month of May as compared to when the lockdown started. He stated that Indian exports were down by ~60% in April. In May, exports made a drastic improvement and was down by ~36%. There seems to be further encouraging signs - in the first week of June, exports are at par of 2019 figures for 1-7 June 2019. Imports are still down by 40% though it was acknowledged that these were mostly non-essentials. Talking about the development in Indian Railways, he mentioned that the railways have been dedicated to moving freight at a 30% of modal Freight traffic, which they are targeting to double. The Railways have also started parcel trains for 94+ routes for small lots of cargo. 3500 such parcel trains are running currently, sometimes even empty, in order to facilitate smooth logistics movement across the country. With regards to the return of migrant labour to the industrial hubs, over 230 trains have been run, and further tickets for which are available for migrant workers to come back to cities However, companies must make their own efforts as well to build trust and ensure proper working and living conditions for these workers in order to induce them to return. Specifically,
companies must take active measures towards better security, housing, nutrition and welfare of the workers. Regarding the ports, it was brought up that at Nhava Sheva, there are various touch points that cause huge delays in the gate-in process as compared to other ports. Mr. Pawan Agarwal will be addressing this by working with the Special Secretary, Ports Chairman and Shipping Ministries to work out a solution for the gate-in processes. As there is some confusion regarding the SEIS scheme and it’s applicability to the logistics industry, Mr. Pawan Agarwal has resolved to make progress on this issue by coordinating with DGFT, DRI & Finance department to provide eligibility guidelines to logistics players. Freight Forwarders and Custom House Agents are currently covered under the MSME status. Mr. Pawan Agarwal will be working with the finance ministry to explore the possibility of giving Freight Forwarders and Custom House Agents an industry status. Gujarat and U.P have already done the same, however, this has been requested at a pan-India level by an attendee of the webinar. Further, Shri Piyush Goyal stresses on the fact that this is the time to improve productivity and efficiencies within the industry. He says, “The loss of April and May will be made up in the coming months until March 21 with volumes going up”. He also emphasized on the fact that the logistics industry must strive to achieve maximum transparency in all its processes in order to improve India’s export competitiveness and deal with the grievances of the shipper community. Indian Shipping companies, Freight Forwarders, Multi-Modal Transporters must work together to bring down the cost of logistics from 14% of GDP to the targeted 9%. He advised the viewers to work towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat by using and producing Indian products. The Government is pushing to increase manufacturing and export of goods wherein India has competitive advantage, e.g. Auto components, leather goods, furniture, agriculture products etc. and accelerate the Make In India story. The co-organisers intend to host more webinars as the crisis period continues, in a bid to provide information to importers, exporters, companies and other stakeholders, thereby helping keep the trade to keep going and evolving in the post Covid world.
Maersk AE19 ocean-rail service from Europe to Asia picking up pace COPENHAGEN: Maersk’s AsiaNorthern Europe ocean-rail service, previously offered on monthly basis in west-bound direction only, will now be provided fortnightly both export from Asia to Europe and return from Europe to Asia. Maersk’s Asia-Norther n Europe ocean-rail ser vice, previously offered on monthly basis in west-bound direction only, will now be provided fortnightly both export from Asia to Europe and return from Europe to Asia. This is expected to help many customers who are currently facing difficulties with their imports/export logistics, due to COVID-19. Maersk recently announced that its combined Ocean and Rail service, AE19, will now be offered on a regular basis for both directions through close cooperation with Pantos Logistics. Customers would practically see the benefits of weekly service combining Maersk's fortnightly AE19 service and Pantos Logistics. AE19 managed to successfully position itself as an attractive alternative to Ocean and Rail services for customers who are currently experiencing problems with transporting their cargo, such as blank sailing, lack of containers, and sky-rocketing air rates, due to COVID-19. The entire journey, starting from Busan to Vostochy in a vessel, followed by Vostochy to St. Petersburg by rail, takes a mere 16 days. In this way, AE19 can offer highly competitive transit times for customers. Following a successful pilot launch of the West-bound service last August, the recent launch of the bidirectional service has also been highly successful. Transit times from South Korea and Japan to Northern Europe have been reduced to 23-32 days from the previously 52-57 days through intermodal transportation. Jason Park, Head of Maersk Korea, adds: “Frequent cancellations and congestions in ports and
airports around the world due to COVID-19 have made the usual Ocean and Air services less attractive for customers. Evidently, AE19’s volumes have increased by approximately 30% compared to pre-COVID-19, compensating for the reduced demand for our other services.” The transition to a fortnightly service is proving to have a positive impact in attracting more customers for Maersk. As regularity, timeliness, and cost-friendliness are all equally important factors to consider for many customers, AE19 gains its competitiveness by offering lower rates than Air, while still ensuring a faster transit time compared to Ocean for their high-value, largevolume cargos. For customers who are used to using either only Ocean or only Air services originally, AE19 now offers an option to diversify their transportation routes as the pandemic continues. Moreover, because the rail service only operates within Russia, customers can also avoid border congestions that are typically associated with intercontinental transportation within the route and expect a more seamless service overall. Key Client Manager, Sung Don Yang said “AE19 service attracts many customers by allowing them to manage transportation risk, providing cost competitiveness and connecting various origins and destinations.” Maersk plans to further increase volume by targeting customer segments dealing with high-value and/or lead-time-sensitive cargos, such as Automotive, Electric, and Facilities sectors. Park emphasizes that “Simplified supply chains pose significant risks to businesses in case of a global pandemic like COVID-19. The intermodal AE19 service offers a compelling alternative to the long transit times in Ocean transportation and the expensive rates in Air transportation”.
