ADB injects $250 million to boost India’s industrial corridors NEW DELHI: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has greenlit a $250 million policy-based loan to further propel the development of industrial corridors in India. The initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, fortify national supply chains, and foster connections with regional and global value chains. Additionally, the project aspires to generate a substantial number of high-quality jobs. According to ADB, the financial support from ADB aligns with the National Industrial Corridor Development Program (NICDP) initiated by the Government of India in 2016, later updated in 2020 for enhanced planning and management of industrial economic clusters.
ADB’s infusion of funds bolsters the effective implementation of NICDP. According to Sameer Khatiwada, ADB Senior Public Management Economist, the program is poised to stimulate job creation across various sectors, including agribusiness, automotive, electronics, food and b e v e r a g e s , h e a v y m a c h i n e r y, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. Khatiwada said, “The program is expected to create jobs in the manufacturing sector in industrial nodes, covering areas such as agribusiness, automotive, electronics, food and beverages, h e a v y m a c h i n e r y , phar maceuticals, and textiles. It will lead to the higher formalization of labour, increased p r o d u c t i v i t y, a n d h i g h e r wages–factors that all directly
contribute to the alleviation of poverty in the corridor states.” A n i n d u s t r i a l c o r r i d o r, a s envisioned by the program, encompasses an efficient multimodal transport network within a designated geographic area. This network is reinforced by quality infrastructure, logistics, skill development, and a business-friendly policy framework. It aims to establish distribution networks linking production centres, urban hubs, and international gateways like ports and airports. The loan supports subprogram 2 of the Industrial Corridor Development Program, focusing on the development of multimodal logistics infrastructure under the government’s Prime Minister Gati Shakti platform.
NMPA signs MoUs worth Rs. 8,347 Cr to boost port-led industrialisation MANGALURU: The recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) is expected to bring in investments worth around Rs. 8,347 crore to the Mangaluru region. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), the only major port in Karnataka, exchanged seven memorandums of understanding with various stakeholders. A majority of the investment proposals are focused on port-led industrialisation, with Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at the top of the heap. MRPL has proposed Rs. 5,000 crore investment in port infrastructure for business development and Rs. 1,500 crore in its own desalination plant (augmentation of capacity). NMPA also exchanged MoUs with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd
(Rs. 800 crore) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (Rs. 500 crore) towards port-led industrialisation. Sealord Containers Ltd’s MoU focuses on setting up an integrated LPG and bulk liquid POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) storage facility in Mangaluru. This is expected to attract investments worth 500 crore. Welcoming MRPL’s proposal to augment capacity at the desalination plant, he said the chamber had earlier
taken up the matter with the authorities concerned. He stressed the need to make available industrial land in the vicinity of the port to support the industrial activities generated by the investments. Calling for improved connectivity between the port and the hinterland, he said a significant chunk of cargo business was lost to other ports due to poor connectivity between Mangaluru and Bengaluru. This needs to be addressed to effectively reap the benefits of the investment, he said. Stating that NMPA is committed to extending its contribution to the m a r i t i m e s e c t o r, AV R a m a n a , Chairman of the port authority, said the MoUs were a step in the right direction.

Crucial for Govt to identify real beneficiaries of interest subvention scheme to various export sectors NEW DELHI: It is crucial for the Government to identify real beneficiaries of the interest subvention scheme provided to various export sectors, think tank GTRI said. The Union Cabinet on Friday approved an additional allocation of Rs 2,500 crore for the continuation of interest equalisation or subsidy scheme on pre- and post-shipment rupee export credit up to June 30 next year. Launched on April 1, 2015, the scheme was initially valid for five years up to March 31, 2020. It has been continued thereafter, with a one-year extension during COVID, and further extensions and fund allocations. “No detailed study of the scheme has been done yet. It is important for the government to identify the actual beneficiaries. Considering the low spending, it is possible that a few large entities, rather than MSMEs, are reaping the most benefits,” the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. It is also necessary to find out which product groups receive the most credit and the effectiveness of banks in assisting small fir ms through this scheme should be examined, it added. “A thorough study might provide insights on whether to exclude
certain items, like low-volume, highvalue goods, such as diamonds and gold jewellery, which are susceptible to misuse. Only a detailed study can reveal the full truth,” GTRI co-founder Ajay Srivastava said. The scheme costs about Rs 3,000 crore on average. There are over 50,000 MSMEs exporting various products from India, plus over a lakh of other exporters for products covered under the scheme. It said that despite the high value of these exports, the scheme’s low expenditure suggests it is underused. Given that Indian MSMEs struggle with credit access and this scheme eases the burden, the gover nment might think about making it permanent, similar to the drawback scheme, the think-tank suggested. “Alternatively, extending it for another five years could be considered. Annual extensions lead to uncertainty, making it hard for exporters to include this in their cost calculations,” Srivastava said. The pre and post-shipment rupee export credit, known as packing credit, assists exporters in covering production and packing costs, with credit accessible upon presenting a confirmed export order.
The credit rate is usually the bank’s rate plus 2-3 per cent, averaging about 8 per cent. “The scheme offers additional discounts – 3 per cent for MSME exporters on all products and 2 per cent for select products for all exporters. Thus, with this scheme, MSMEs can access credit at 5 per cent and others at 6 per cent,” Srivastava said. He added that these rates are comparable with prevailing global interest rates like 5.5 per cent in the US, 3.5 per cent in China, and 5.3 per cent in the UK. “Thus the scheme lowers the cost of capital for Indian exporters, benefiting MSMEs in particular,” he said, adding that “however, despite its potential, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis on its utilisation and impact, especially concerning its actual beneficiaries and effectiveness in reaching the intended MSME sector”. Manufacturer and merchant exporters shipping specified 410 products will get a 2 per cent subsidy and all the MSME exporters will get 3 per cent. These sectors include handicrafts, leather, certain fabrics, carpets and readymade garments .

Adani in posts on X, formerly Twitter, has over the last few days detailed ‘green’ initiatives of the investment plan across some verticals of the apples-to-airport conglomerate. “The portfolio recently announced its plan to invest over Rs 7 lakh crore over the next 10 years to consolidate its preeminent position as the largest infrastructure player in India,” Adani Energy Solutions said in a stock exchange filing. While flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd incubates and develops new businesses spanning mining, airports, defence and aerospace, solar manufacturing, roads, metro and rail, data centres and resource management, its ports business is on a greening drive.
“By 2025, we will set a national benchmark being the only carbonneutral port operations and be net zero for APSEZ by 2040. Our climatefriendly transformation includes electrifying all cranes, switching all diesel-based internal transfer vehicles to battery-based ITVs, and installing an additional 1000 MW of c a p t i v e r e n e w a b l e c a p a c i t y, ” Mr. Gautam Adani said in a post on X. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) is the nation’s largest seaport operator in the country, with ports on both east and west coasts. “Our dedication to protecting the environment is also reflected in our expanding mangrove plantations, aiming for a remarkable 5000 hectares by FY 25. This is yet another step towards a
greener future and further testament of our commitment to climate stewardship,” he said. This is alongside the fast-expanding renewable energy business. Sharing pictures of the massive construction work in Kuch desserts in Gujarat, Adani said his group is building “the world’s largest green energy park”. “This monumental project, covering 726 sq km in the challenging Rann desert, is visible even from space. We will generate 30GW to power over 20 million homes. Also, just 150 km away, in our Kar mabhoomi Mundra, we are creating one of the globe’s most extensive and integrated renewable energy manufacturing ecosystems for solar and wind,” he said.
Govt makes it mandatory to register import of yellow peas under import monitoring system till March 2024 NEW DELHI: The Government has made it mandatory to register import of yellow peas under the import monitoring system till March 3 1 n e x t y e a r, a c c o r d i n g t o a notification. The move is aimed at increasing domestic availability of the commodity. From April 1, 2024, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that the restricted import policy
and associated policy conditions will come into effect. "Imports of yellow peas... is free subject to registration under the import monitoring system with immediate effect for the period up to March 31, 2024. MIP (Minimum Import Price) conditions and port restrictions shall also not to be applicable to such yellow peas import for the period up to March 31,
2024," the DGFT notification has said. Till now, the import was subject to an annual (fiscal year) quota MIP of Rs 200 and above CIF (cost, insurance, freight) per kilogramme, and import is allowed through Kolkata Sea port only. India imported USD 0.14 million worth of yellow peas in 2022-23, all from Russia.
India’s coal imports drop over 4 per cent to 148 million in Apr-Oct period NEW DELHI: India’s coal imports dropped 4.2 per cent to 148.13 Million Tonnes (MT) in the April-October period of the ongoing financial year. The country’s coal imports were 154.72 MT in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. During the April-October period, non-coking coal imports were 94.53 MT, lower than 104.41 MT imported during the same period last year, according to the data of mjunction
services ltd, a B2B e-commerce company. Coking coal imports were at 33.74 MT during the first seven months of the ongoing financial year, slightly up against 32.74 MT in the year-ago period. Imports in October stood at roughly 23.59 MT as against 19.04 MT in October last fiscal, as per the data. Of the total imports in October, inbound shipments of non-coking coal
stood at 16.88 MT, against 11.69 MT imported in October last year. Coking coal imports stood at 4.31 MT, against 4.69 MT imported in October last financial year. “There was an increase in volumes as the buyers took fresh positions. Several utility tenders were issued, amid lower inventories at plants and the Centre’s directive on imports for blends,” mjunction MD & CEO Vinaya Varma said.
Agri-commodities exports decline to 17.93 lakh tonnes in Sept: APEDA NEW DELHI: According to APEDA, exports of agri-commodities, including basmati rice, fell to 17.93 lakh tonnes in September this year from 27.94 lakh tonnes the previous month. Agri-commodity exports in April and May totaled over 33 lakh tonnes apiece. However, due to multiple restrictions on the export of several varieties of rice, including broken rice and non-basmati white rice, shipments of farm commodities plummeted to roughly 18 lakh tonnes.
According to data collected by the Agricultural and Processed Food P r o du c t s E x po r t D e ve lo pm e n t Authority (APEDA), agricultural exports totaled 27.94 lakh tonnes in August of the 2023-24 fiscal year. In value terms, the export of farm items declined to Rs 14,153 crore during September from Rs 18,128 crore in August of this fiscal. Much of the exports in September were non-basmati exports which stood at 4.25 lakh tonne, basmati rice at 1.21 lakh tonne, fresh onions at 1.51 lakh tonne, and buffalo meat at
1,21,427 tonne, the data showed. Total export of agri-commodities in April-September stood at 172.27 lakh tonnes. The export of certain agricultural commodities has taken a hit this year because of the prohibition on various varieties of rice, the imposition of a minimum export price on basmati rice to boost domestic supply and check food inflation. APEDA maintains data on the export of 47 agricultural commodities including meat and poultry products.

Vice President, BCBA, Mr. Paresh Thakkar explained how in the past history of the world and specifically in India, port cities have developed and brought prosperity to the inhabitants for current and future generations. They also gave assurance of the full support of BCBA to JNPA and the people in the vicinity of the port. Many examples and testimonials were shared of individuals working in this industry and their successful growth story. JNPA appreciated the role played by BCBA for supporting the orientation and skill development with youngsters. This soft initiative for skill development, concurrent with the port building, will benefit the youth who want to make a career in the Shipping and Logistics industry. BCBA reaffirmed its commitment to conduct many more workshops for grooming and handholding the Gen Next and provide 1st stage employment as well as encouragement for entrepreneurship in the field of Customs Clearance and Logistics.
The workshop, which was held at Palghar, provided valuable information on the opening of a new window of employment to the regional population relating to Export Import trade and customs clearance activities along with a wide array of other supporting services within the port ecosystem. DP World Cochin launches new ‘SIG’ service to expand connectivity to Southeast Asia and the Middle East COCHIN: DP World’s International Container Transhipme nt Terminal (ICTT) at Cochin will host a new weekly mainline service called, ‘SIG’ operated by ONE Line to strengthen the India-Southeast Asia and the Middle East trade link. DP World Cochin flagged off the new service by welcoming the first v e s s e l , M . V. S a f e e n P r i s m , on 7th December 2023. The new weekly service has four vessels deployed with a capacity of 2800 TEUs providing direct connectivity between the Middle East and South East Asia. This new service will further provide Cochin and its hinterland with access to destinations in the Fa r E a s t , S o u t h e a s t A s i a , Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, United States West Coast, Canada, and vice-versa. The service covers a port rotation between Singapore – Nhava Sheva – Mundra – Dammam – Jebel Ali – Cochin – Colombo – Singapore.
Commenting on the launch of the SIG service, Ravinder Johal, C O O Po r t s & Te r m i n a l s , DP World Subcontinent and MENA region said, “The launch of our SIG service marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s connectivity to global trade. A pioneering initiative, SIG highlights our commitment to enhancing supply chain efficiencies, building direct trade routes, and supporting economic growth. With this service, Export Import businesses will be able to explore newer markets across Southeast Asia and the Middle East." The launch of SIG will help e n h a n c e D P Wo r l d C o c h i n position as a preferred gateway to south of India as it offers greater connectivity to ports in Europe, the Mediterranean, China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Presently, nearly 50% of both export and import cargo is directly connected from DP World Cochin, resulting in faster transit times, seamless connectivity, and better cost efficiencies for customers.
