CMA CGM Group strengthens strategic logistics development with GEFCO acquisition MARSEILLE : The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, is acquiring nearly 100% of the capital of GEFCO, European leader in automotive logistics and international expert in multimodal supply chain. The acquisition has been submitted to competition authorities for approval. However, as part of a special procedure, the European Commission has authorized CMA CGM to acquire the capital of GEFCO immediately, pending the final approval that will take place in the coming months. The acquisition will strengthen the range of logistics services that CEVA Logistics, CMA CGM’s logistics subsidiary, provides to its customers, especially in France and the rest of Europe. While the larger players have managed to hike rate to a large extent in FY2022, their sustained ability to do the same remains to be seen. M r. S u p r i o B a n e r j e e , V i c e President & Sector-Head, ICRA Ratings, said, “Quarterly revenues for the logistics sector breached multiyear highs during Q2 FY2022 and Q3 FY2022 supported by sustained recovery in industrial activities. The impact of third wave was minimal as the hospitalisation rates were low. While there were regional restrictions for a brief period, manufacturing, construction activities and movement of goods were permitted due to which the impact on commercial traffic was limited. This is also reflected by the stability in monthly e-way bill volumes as well as FASTag volumes since during Jan-Feb 2022. ICRA expects the logistics sector to have grown by 14-17% in FY2022 (over pre-Covid levels) and the growth momentum is likely to
continue in FY2023 with estimated growth of 7-9% Yo-Y. While concerns around threat of potential new Covidvariantsremains, the demand impact is likely to be limited. Margins, however, shall remain sensitive to risks stemming from a continued rise in commodity and fuel prices owing to the fallout of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Multiple rate hikes of diesel are being witnessed in the last two weeks and the same is likely to continue over the next few days.” Overall, the aggregate revenues of ICRA’s sample of nine leading logistics companies increased on a Q-o-Q basis in Q3 FY2022 by 6.8% over Q2 FY2022. On a Y-o-Y basis, volumes for FASTag grew by 54% and e-way bill volumes grew by 7% in Jan- Feb 2022, given the easing of restrictions and rapid abatement of the third wave. However, industry volumes remain sensitive to economic activity on an aggregate. Margins recovered sharply with steep Qo-Q industry revenue growth in Q2 FY2022. Improving scale of operations had a positive impact on operating margins, which remained healthy at 14.5% in Q3 FY2022; although the spike in fuel prices in Q3 FY2022 moderated
margins relative to Q2 FY2022. ICRA expects the aggregate operating profit margins of the sample in the range of 12-14% in FY2022 against 12.1% in FY2021. Nevertheless, with the expected adverse impact of spike in commodity prices amidst the ongoing geopolitical tensions,the players’ ability to pass-on are to be seen in the coming quarters. Revenue growth over the medium term would continue to be driven by demand from varied segments like ecommerce, FMCG, retail, chemicals, phar maceuticals and industrial goods coupled with the industry’s paradigm shift towards organised logistics players post GST and E-way bill implementation. Furthermore, multimodal offerings are likely to gain increased acceptance and traction going forward, given that players offering multimodal ser vices had more flexibility. Given these factors, and the relatively higher financial flexibility available to large organisedplayers vis-à-vis their smaller counterparts, there is potential for increased formalisation in the sector going forward.

RBI Monetary Policy Meeting Highlights: DAS-led MPC keeps rates steady, ups FY23 inflation to 5.7% amid Ukraine war MUMBAI - RBI Monetary Policy Highlights: Reser ve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has kept the repo rate and reverse repo rate unchanged at 4% and 3.35% respectively in its first monetary policy statement of FY 2023. The Monetary Policy Committee of the RBI also voted unanimously to maintain an
accommodative stance. MPC revised FY23 GDP forecast to 7.2% from earlier guidance of 7.8%. Inflation projections have also been raised to 5.7%, higher than previous expectation of 4.5%, primarily due to war induced factors, RBI’s Das said. “In the sequence of priorities we have now put inflation before growth.
Stance continues to be accommodative and with an eye on withdrawal of accommodation,” he added. In the last 10 meetings, the MPC left the interest rate unchanged and maintained an accommodative monetary policy stance. The next bi-monthly monetary policy of 2022-23 will be held during June 6-8.

RBI proposes to simplify payment settlement process for exports & imports via e-commerce MUMBAI - The Reserve Bank of India has proposed to modify the existing norms to simplify and rationalise the process for settlement of payment for exports and imports through e-commerce. RBI has issued draft guidelines on ‘Processing and Settlement of small value Export and Import related payments’ facilitated by Online Export-Import Facilitators (OEIF) (erstwhile OPGSP).
“With development in the ecosystem for e-commerce and the feedback received from banks and other stakeholders, on a comprehensive review, the extant guidelines are being modified to further simplify and rationalise the process for settlement of payment for export and import through e-commerce,” it said. On import transactions, the central bank has proposed that the facility shall be available for online import of goods
and digital products of value not exceeding USD 3,000. In case of exports, the limit has been proposed at USD 15,000. Currently, banks are permitted to offer the facility of processing and settlement of import and export-related remittances by entering into standing contract with Online Payment Gateway Service Providers (OPGSPs) in respect of export of goods and services as well as import of goods and software.
Exporters start getting payments for Russia supplies : Sources NEW DELHI - After weeks of uncertainties, Indian exporters have started receiving payments for their goods despatches to Russia, with both the countries working towards resolving the payments issue that had hit the cash flow of scores of domestic traders. As many as 35 of the 56 major exporters to Russia, identified by the commerce ministry, have received payments, a senior government official said recently. Others, too, are expected to get payments soon, he added. Some Indian exporters had earlier claimed that $400-600 million in payment was stuck, though there was no official word on it. Russian importers have made payments in euros through banks like Gazprombank that are outside the ambit of western sanctions, according to sources. This has made it easy for Indian banks, who had put on hold fresh deals
with Russian lenders after the Ukraine war, to get into transactions with them. “Once the (Russian) importers deposit the euros there, the correspondent Indian banks convert them and release payments to relevant Indian exporters in the rupees,” one of the sources said. “We have about 100 authorised dealers-category-1 banks, which are allowed by the RBI to undertake capital and current account transactions. These banks can act as the correspondent banks,” he added. Already, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the US and its European allies decided to block certain Russian banks from the SWIFT financial-messaging infrastructure for cross-border payment. VTB, Russia’s second-largest bank by assets, VEB, another big player, and five smaller ones have been cut off from the SWIFT. This adversely affected various
countries’ trade transactions with Russia. New Delhi buys substantially more goods from Moscow than what it ships out to the latter (its bilateral trade deficit stood at $4.34 billion in the first three quarters of FY22). So, payments shouldn’t be an issue, if a proper rupee-rouble architecture is worked out, exporters have said. India mostly buys petroleum products, diamonds and other precious stones and fertilisers from Russia. Similarly, it ships out capital goods, pharmaceutical products, organic chemicals and farm products to Moscow. Capital goods and certain consumer products made up 25% of India’s exports to Russia in the first three quarters of this fiscal, while pharmaceutical and organic chemicals accounted for over 22% and farm items 18%.
India to export 30-35 lakh tonnes of Wheat in April-July: Food Secretary N E W D E L H I - Tr a d e r s h a v e entered into contracts for the export of 30-35 lakh tonnes of wheat during the April-July period, buoyed by increasing demand for the commodity in the world market, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said recently. The countr y ’s wheat exports crossed 70 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 as against 21.55 lakh tonnes in 2020-21, according to the official data. “The trade estimate is that about 30-35 lakh tonne of wheat has been contracted for export during the AprilJuly period of this year,” Pandey told reporters.
The maximum quantity of wheat will be shipped from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh because of proximity of these states to ports and easier logistics, he told reporters. As a result, private traders are procuring wheat for export from these states. If international prices rise further, traders may buy the grain from other states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, he said. With private trade procuring wheat for export, there may be reduction in government procurement but it is too early to say. The government is, however, monitoring the situation
regularly, he added. Last week, Commerce and Industry Minister PiyushGoyal had said that the country’s wheat exports could cross 100 lakh tonnes during the 2022-23 fiscal. Many countries are sourcing wheat from India and other countries after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent Western sanctions against Moscow curtailed their wheat supplies. Indian Government plans to promote wheat exports to cash in on higher wheat prices in the global market. India is the second-biggest producer of wheat in the world.
Forex reserves slide USD 11.17 bn to USD 606.475 bn MUMBAI - In the steepest weekly fall ever, India's forex reserves slid by USD 11.173 billion to USD 606.475 billion as the currency came under pressure due to geopolitical developments, according to the Reserve Bank data released. For the previous reporting week ended March 25, the overall reserves had slid by USD 2.03 billion to
USD 617.648 billion. The steep fall in the reserves was because of a decline in the core currency assets, which fell by USD 10.727 billion to USD 539.727 billion. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and
yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. The previous worst weekly fall was of USD 9.6 billion for the week ended on March 11. For the reporting week, the value of gold reserves also decreased by USD 507 million to USD 42.734 billion, the RBI data showed.

Container Ship orderbook hits 6.5m TEU for the first time since 2008 O S L O - T h e container ship orderbook hit a postfinancial crisis low just below 2m TEU in October 2020. In the eighteen months since then, liner operators have seen record profits and a large percentage of these have been poured into newbuilding contracts. “In just eighteen months, 6m TEU of newbuilding contracts have been added to the container ship orderbook,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO, adding: “This has taken the orderbook past 6.5m TEU for the first time since late 2008.” The orderbook is now 26% of the fleet size for the first time since 2014 and, combined with YTD 2022 deliveries, 6.2m TEU are now scheduled to be delivered during 2022-2024. “In addition to the newbuilding deliveries, we must expect that congestion problems around the world will eventually begin to ease. This could release as much as 2m TEU effective supply on top of newbuilding deliveries, and the total additional supply appears to be on target to exceed 8m TEU between early 2022 and early 2025, representing 33% of the current fleet size in just three years,” says Rasmussen.
I n t h e meantime, on the other side of the supply equation, demolition and sailing speed are very likely also headed f o r substantial changes. A share of the fleet will not be able to comply with EEXI targets without retrofits or introduction of Engine Power Limitation (EPL). Some vessels may, however, have no good path to compliance while remaining commercially attractive and will be demolished. The vessels that do achieve EEXI compliance will also be faced with CII introduction on 1 January 2023 as well as shipping’s likely inclusion in the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). This will add further pressure on reducing GHG emissions and some vessels may simply be considered uneconomical to keep in operation. Others may have to slow down further to achieve the desired CII rating.
“Most owners probably already have plans in place for their individual v e s s e l s . H o w e v e r, a c c u r a t e l y estimating the impact of EEXI, CII, and ETS on the entire fleet is extremely difficult,” says Rasmussen. “All that seems certain is that we will see more vessels demolished and others reducing speed. Because of the reduced speed, liner operators may have to add an additional vessel to several ser vices. Still, unless demand surprises on the upside it appears unlikely that all the capacity being delivered and released from congestion can be absorbed without damaging the supply/demand balance in the coming years.”
GatiShakti, PLI scheme to offset global headwind, boost growth: Finance Ministry report N EW DELHI - GatiShakti and Production-Linked Incentive Schemes will offset global headwinds and drive investment, resulting in high postrecovery growth for the Indian economy, a Finance Ministry report said. G eopolitical conflicts and their consequent impact on food, fertiliser and crude oil prices cast a cloud on the growth outlook globally, as per the monthly Economic Review prepared by the Ministry. India may feel its impact although the magnitude will, of course, depend on how long the dislocations in energy and food markets persist in the financial year and how resilient India’s economy is to mitigate the impact, it said, adding transient shocks may not have a big effect on real growth and inflation. “ Offsetting these potential
headwinds, GatiShakti and Production Linked Incentive Schemes will drive investment, which will combine with supply chains strengthened by structural reforms taken in the past few years to deliver high post-recovery growth for the Indian economy,” it said. PMI Services has also stayed in the expansionary zone continuously for eight months on the back of E-toll collection, E-Way Bill, Railway freight and Air Cargo, among others, complementing the robust manufacturing sector, the report noted. vaccination coverage expanding faster than the decline in cases of a new infection. I n this backdrop, private consumption may be beginning to perk up. UPI transaction values and volumes have more than doubled in 2021-22, with the volume of UPI transactions in March 2022 crossing 5 billion in a month for the first time, the report said. In a major vote of confidence in the attractiveness of the Indian economy as a major foreign investment destination, gross FDI inflows into the economy have risen to USD 69.7 billion in April-January 2021-22, the Ministry said in the report. G rowing FDIs and other capital inflows have ensured a comfortable foreign exchange reserves position with an import cover of more than 12 months, it said.
After two difficult years, mango traders expect good export season PUNE - After two years of low export volumes, mango traders are hopeful of a good year, with some hoping that the export volume this year will cross even the average 50,000-ton export. A bumper crop in many parts of the country as well as demand from overseas markets are expected to give some momentum to exports. Kesar, Baiganpalli and Alphonso are among the most popular varieties of mangoes exported from the country. Sunil Pawar, Managing Ddirector of Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), said they have given the green signal to exporters to start their operations.
The arrival of a phytosanitary inspector from the US, at the Vashi irradiation facility in Navi Mumbai, was a major boost for exporters. Mangoes headed to the USA have to be irradiated before they are exported. For countries like Japan and those in Europe, hot water treatment and vapour heat treatment are prescribed. MSAMB officials have earmarked 50 ton of exports from the Vapour Heat Treatment facility for Japan and South Korea each, and 200 ton for European Union countries. This year, a total of 18,677 mango farms have registered with the MangoNet trace-ability system of the Agricultural
