MUMBAI: As the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways gears up for the most awaited maritime event Global Maritime India Summit- 2023 of the nation. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister, MoPSW along with Shri Shripad Y. Naik, MoS, MoPSW briefed media in Mumbai. The Ministry’s biggest maritime event is scheduled from 17th to 19th October at MMRDA Grounds, BKC, Mumbai.

While addressing the press conference Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister, M o P S W s a i d , ‘ I n l i n e w i t h t h e H o n’ b l e P r i m e M i n i s t e r ’ s v i s i o n o f “One Earth One Family One Future”, each session of GMIS-2023 has been designed to deliberate upon pressing global maritime issues’.

‘GMIS 2023 is aligned with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and captures a wide range of opportunities for Public Private Partnerships, with investment opportunities of Rs.10 lakh crore already identified across the sector with potential to generate more than 15 lakh job opportunities’, Shri Sonowal added.

Sharing his concluding remarks, Shri Sonowal said, "Our vision is to foster a blue economy, promoting the development of green ports, sustainable infrastructure, cruise tourism and attracting global investments to propel the maritime industry forward."

It is to be noted that the 3rd edition of the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 is going to be much bigger and more inclusive than the previous two summits organized in 2016 and 2021 in terms of scale and participation.

GMIS 2023 is expected to draw participation from more than 70 countries. A cadre of senior ministers from the UAE, South Africa, Armenia, Italy, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan,

Belarus, Bangladesh, and Madagascar will be attending. The summit is poised to host over 250 national and international speakers and CEOs, in addition to conducting more than 20 thematic sessions, including 7 international roundtables and 13+ sectoral and state discussions. Discussions are planned on regional cooperation in BIMSTEC countries, Chabahar and INSTC (International North–South Transport Corridor), Africa, Indo Pacific, Europe and the newly launched IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor).

Emerging as a crucial trade gateway, Mundra Port has grown into a multimodal hub that drives trade and fortifies economic progression. From its modest inception, it has ascended to prominence and has contributed over Rs. 2.25 lakh crore to the state and national exchequer in the past 25 years, emphasising its central role in India’s economic framework. Also, it has generated employment exceeding 7.5 crore man-days since inception.

From a handful of tonnes in 1998, Mundra went on to handle 100 MMT in 2014, the first in India to do so Today, the port handles over 155 MMT (again the first in India), which constitutes nearly 11% of India’s maritime cargo. Mundra is also the Export Import gateway for container traffic. In fact, 33% of India’s container traffic flows through the port across a dedicated freight corridor that offers the unique facility of double-stack containers from the northern hinterland to Mundra.

UPDATE ON HAIFAPORT

We are closely monitoring the action on ground which is concentrated in South Israel, whereas Haifa port is situated in the North. We have taken measures to ensure safety of our employees and all of them are safe. We remain fully alert and prepared with a business continuity plan that will enable us to respond effectively to any eventuality.

The overall contribution of Haifa in APSEZ’s numbers is relatively small at 3% of the total cargo volume. For the current financial year (Apr 23-Mar 24), we have guided for Haifa Cargo volumes range of 10-12 MMT and APSEZ’s total cargo volume guidance of 370-390 MMT. In the initial six months (Apr-Sep 23), APSEZ’s total cargo volume was ~203 MMT, of which the Haifa share is ~6 MMT We stay confident of APSEZs business performance.”

MSC tops schedule reliability rankings in August : Sea-Intelligence

COPENHAGEN: Danish Maritime data analysis firm Sea-Intelligence has released a report about schedule reliability data of container carriers for January – August 2023.

In August 2023, global schedule reliability fell by -0 9 M/M to 63 2% Except for the May increase, schedule reliability has been within 2% points since March 2023.

On a year-over-year level, schedule reliability was 17% points higher The average LATE vessel arrivals delay increasedby0 07daysM/Mto4 67days

“Despite the M/M increase, the average delay for LATE vessel arrivals is still -1.23 days better off than at the same point last year,” noted CEO of Sea-Intelligence, Alan Murphy

MSC was the most reliable top-14 carrier in August, with 70.9% schedule reliability, followed by Maersk and Hamburg Süd with 70%.

Also, CMA CGM was the only carrier with a 60%-70% schedule reliability. Eight of the other carriers had schedule

reliability of 50%-60%, with HMM and Yang Ming falling short at 50% and 47.3%, respectively

Only three of the top fourteen carriers increased M/M in August 2023, with OOCL having the biggest gain of 2.8% points. On a year-over-year level, all 14 carriers improved by double digits, with MSC improving by the most, 26.8% points.

Major Ports’ trafc surges by 2.36% : Paradip Port becomes the Numero Uno

PARADIP: Total India’s cargo traffic handled by 12 Major Ports is on the rise and has reached 393 732 MMT in the first half of FY 2023-24, exhibiting growth of 2.35% year on year, according to the latest figures released by the Indian Ports Association.

NEW DELHI: Indian exporters shipping goods to Israel may face higher insurance premiums and shipping costs due to the IsraelPalestine Conflict, according to experts The International trade experts said the conflict may reduce the profits of domestic exporters but will not impact trade volumes unless war escalates.

‘For merchandise exports of India, the war may lead to higher insurance premiums and shipping costs. India’s ECGC may charge higher risk p r e m i u m s f r o m I n d i a n f i r m s exporting to Israel,’ think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said on Sunday, 8th October

ECGC Ltd (formerly Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India Ltd) is wholly owned by the government of India. It was set up in 1957 with the objective of promoting exports from the country by providing credit risk insurance and related services for exports.

Mumbai-based exporter and Founder Chairman of Technocraft Industries India Sharad Kumar Saraf said the conflict may have an impact on Indian exporters in the short run.

‘But if the war escalates, things may get bitter for our exporters of that region,’ Saraf said.

GTRI Co-founder Ajay Srivastava said trade may be seriously impacted if operations at the three largest ports of Israel- Haifa, Ashdod and Eilat are disrupted These ports handle shipments of agricultural products, chemicals, electronics, machinery, and vehicles. India’s merchandise trade with Israel happens mostly through Eilat port, located on the Red Sea. ‘Fortunately, so far there is no report of port disruption. IndiaIsrael bilateral services trade is e s t i m a t e d t o b e a r o u n d U S D 1.3 billion. It may have no impact unless war escalates to involve bigger parts of Israel. The real impact would depend on the duration and intensity of the war,’ Srivastava said.

India’s coal imports decline 12 % in August

MUMBAI: India’s coal imports declined 12.08 per cent to 18.26 million tonnes (MT) in August this year over the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. The Country’s import of fossil fuel stood at 20.77 MT in August last year

Overall coal imports during April to August also declined by 10.3 per cent to 103.93 MT, over 115.93 MT in the year-ago period, according to data compiled by mjunction services ltd.

Of the total imports in August, noncoking coal import was at 10 52 MT as against 13 85 MT a year ago Coking coal import was at 4 62 MT, same as the volumereportedinAugustofFY23

“There is a substantial drop in non-coking coal import (till August 2023) to the tune of around 20 MT. This has resulted from the increased domestic availability, which has gone up by around 10 per cent. We expect this trend to continue unless there is a

s u d d e n s p u r t i n d e m a n d a n d significant softening in seaborne prices,” mjunction MD & CEO Vinaya Varma said.

During the April-August period of the current fiscal, non-coking coal imports were at 62.87 MT, lower than 80.64 MT imported in the year-ago period. Coking coal imports stood at 25.75 MT during April-August 2023-24, higher than 23 16 MT recorded in April-August 2022-23.

Export-Import Bank of India pitches for new export markets to empower Indian businesses

NEW DELHI: Export-Import Bank of India is committed to empowering Indian businesses by expanding exports to new markets, and it aims to collaborate with existing ones to foster growth amid economic slowdown and geopolitical challenges, a senior official said recently.

The external trade-focused bank does not see any concern so far for its exposure in Canada, and the situation has the attention of the government, the official said.

“With the economic slowdown in the key markets, the bank is focusing on trade facilitation measures to boost exports in new markets and help existing markets grow,” Export-Import Bank of India’s Deputy Managing Director Tarun Sharma was quoted as saying.

Asked about its strategy, Sharma explained that among its measures to

boost exports, the bank is focussing on new emerging markets like African, Latin American and South Asian markets are for incremental exports. In addition, GIFT City’s new subsidiary will also play a vital role in factoring overseas transactions.

The Export-Import Bank of India had forecast a 4 8 per cent decline in India’s total merchandise exports in Q2 (JulySeptember) of FY24, shadowed by continued slowdown in select major trade partners,includingadvancedeconomies

Under the Trade Assistance Programme (TAP), Export-Import Bank of India provides support through c r e d i t e n h a n c e m e n t t o t r a d e instrument(s), thereby enhancing the capacity of commercial banks/financial institutions in India to support crossborder trade transactions, involving markets where trade lines are constrained or where the potential has

not been harnessed.

Sharma informed that its newly established subsidiary Exim Finserve at the International Financial Services Centre in GIFT City, Gujarat, will have a long-term impact supporting the growth of exports from India.

“This month, we are doing our first set of transactions, exports happening to the United States, and we are again very confident that both the trade assistance program and factoring will cover the entire gamut of pre-finance services in India, both on documentary credit basis and open terms,” Sharma said.

With Exim Finserve, exporters can obtain receivables financing, protection against non-payment risk, and receivables management services. As a result, exporters will have improved cash flow and reduced payment risk, allowing them to explore new markets.
