This World Environment Day, JNPT highlights its Green Initiatives for a Sustainable Future NAVI MUMBAI: On the occasion of World Environment Day celebration, a 1000 sapling plantation drive of endemic species as Karanj, Jamun, Arjuna, Kadamba, Neem, and Gulmohar was carried out by Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT, Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Dy. Chairman, HoDs and other Senior Officers. JNPT has initiated various environmental upgradations and Green Port Initiatives like 4 MLD sewage treatment plant, Electric Cart for movement in Port operational area, Shore Power Supply to Tugs/Port Crafts, E-Toilets at Wharf. Freight moving Trucks doubled in capacity during May compared to April NEW DELHI: The number of trucks moving freight doubled to 2.2-2.5 million in May from the month ago, reflecting the gradual resumption of economic activity as lockdown restrictions were eased. Capacity utilisation was 30-35% in May with transport of essential goods–including medicines and specific food items—at pre-Covid levels, according to several industry associations and fleet operators. However fleet operators say that unless economic momentum gathers pace, many transporters may be forced to fold up in the next few months. Transport Corporation of India (TCI), India’s largest logistics provider, sees fleet utilisation rising to 50-70% by the end of June with more sectors opening up. Demand for essentials is being fully met and the supply chains for the segment have worked smoothly during the lockdown, said Jasjit Sethi, CEO, TCI Supply Chain Solutions, adding that all the components of GDP have started moving. “May has been a crucial month of the restart with the ‘new normal.’ The flows are still not perfect with backhauls a concern, port congestion in evacuation, but they are improving,” Sethi said. “We see the last week of June coming to a 70% level in run rate.” Auto retail registrations, a barometer of on-ground demand, have shown an uptick in the past 10 days, ICICI Securities said in its June 5 Covid Recovery Pulse note. That’s at about 30% of pre-Covid levels on an overall basis, it said. The note added that E-Way bill generation for May was clocked at 2.6 crore in May. If one compares this to the

average bill generation in the months prior to Covid-19 (October 2019-February 2020), it has reached 46% of the average 5.5 crore bills. April E-Way bill generation hovered at 16% levels. While sentiment has improved, the pickup in activity is gradual and essential goods still dominate, said Bal Malkit Singh, chairman of the core committee at the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) lobby group. “Strong agriculture output boosted truck utilisation,” he said. “Now there is significant overcapacity in the market, and the demand environment is quite tepid right now.” The next two months will be critical and will determine whether the jobs of truck drivers can be saved, he said. Consultancy Deloitte pegs the Indian logistics market at $160 billion, of which road transport is a key element. Truck utilisation was already down to 65 % in January 2020, before the pandemic struck, due to the economic slump. With a recession looming, fleet demand is still poor, said SP Singh, senior fellow, Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT). More than 60% of transporters and fleet owners have opted for the extended moratorium on repayment of equated monthly instalments (EMIs) that ends in August. Most fleet owners may not be able to resume EMI repayments and mass repossessions could result, he said. “The situation, unfortunately, looks to be very bleak as a large number of operators may exit or consolidate in the freight business as the recession is going to prolong in the entire current fiscal,” Singh said.

Fresh Fruits exported from Andhra Pradesh to reach UK soon VISAKHAPATNAM: In a first, fresh fruits were exported directly from Visakhapatnam Port to the United Kingdom (UK) through container shipment. Two consignments carrying 19,000 kg of watermelon and 12,000 kg of mangoes produced by farmers from coastal Andhra Pradesh were packed and loaded in containers by a Vizag-based logistics company via Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL) for two ports in the UK. The move is expected to encourage production by local farmers by procuring from them in bulk, in a single consignment. Watermelon, pineapple and bananas will soon be shipped for consumers in

other European countries. Mr. Anil Narayanan, of VCTPL was quoted as saying, “Vizag is a gateway port for containers and direct shipment is available from Vizag to European countries though fruits have never been shipped before. They used to be sent through trans-shipment in Colombo. This month, we sent the first consignment of fruits in refrigerated containers to UK on trial ships maintaining the ideal temperature so that the fruits remain fresh for the month-long journey. Depending on its success, more varieties of fruits can be directly shipped from Vizag to other European countries.” On their first fruit export shipment, director of Elite Logix Exim Agency (India) Pvt Ltd, A Ravi Shankar, said,

“There is a demand for tropical fruits in UK and Europe. They had been importing from other Asian countries and from other Indian ports or through air cargo. Due to the pandemic, fruit cultivators of AP are also facing losses in their business. So we decided to purchase in bulk from local farmers (19 tonnes of watermelon from Vijayawada and 12 tonnes of mangoes from east Godhavari), got them packed (3 kg of mangoes per box) at Nuzvid. “The mangoes are being shipped to London Gateway port while watermelons are being sent to Felixstowe Port and will be subsequently dispatched to supermarkets in London. We are planning to send 18 tonnes of pineapple from Tuni in East Godavari,” added Ravi Shankar.

IMO’s message on World Oceans Day LONDON: International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim has issued a message to mark being the United Nations’ (UN) World Oceans Day, and to invite widespread celebration of the oceans and the ships that sail on them. Pointing out that theme for this year ’s day is "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean”, Lim says that “oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming,” They also support the world's marine and coastal resources and industries – with an estimated value of $3 trillion per year, or about 5% of global GDP, he adds,

meaning “the future of the oceans and our future are inseparable.” 2020 was set to be a "super year for the oceans", Lim continues, with the conclusion of a new treaty to protect biodiversity on the high seas, and the second UN Ocean Conference to advance work on Sustainable Development Goal 14 (‘Life Below Water’), before these processes were “slowed down due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.” IMO remains committed to protecting the oceans, however, secretary-general Lim concludes, and invites everybody to learn more about the various conser vation issues

CONCOR expression of interest likely next month : Sources NEW DELHI: The government plans to come out with expressions of interest (EoI) next month for a strategic sale in Container Corporation of India (Concor). “We had completed the roadshows and investor meetings before the lockdown and are hopeful that the economic situation would be much better in July and we are planning to come up with the Concor strategic sale

next month,” a senior finance ministry official said. They said the EoI could be towards the end of next month and they expect an increased interest in the freight business in the new scenario. The government plans to offload 30.80 per cent of its 54.80 per cent stake in Concor. The government will retain a 24 per cent stake post sell-off but without any veto powers. The department of investment and

public asset management (Dipam) had held roadshows in Canada and Singapore during which investors had raised queries on land usage post its strategic disinvestment. Concor is looking to reduce its dependence on terminals built on land owned by the Indian Railways for handling cargo containers. Concor’s terminals built on railways’ land have become issues in its privatisation, said sources.

Rail freight traffic drops 28% in April-May amid Covid-19 lockdown NEW DELHI: Owing to the decline in economic activity during the first two months of the fiscal year 2020-21 (FY21), rail freight traffic in April and May dropped by 28 per cent, or 58 million tonne (mt), to 148 MT, compared to 206 mt during the same period last year. Among the commodities, coal was the worst-hit, with the sector contributing 60 per cent to the total decline. Out of the total decline of 58 mt, Coal freight traffic alone saw a decline of 35 MT. In April-May, coal loading was seen at 71 mt, compared to 106 mt during the first two months of FY20. Freight earnings too saw a decline of Rs 8,284 crore to Rs 13,412 crore in the first two months of FY21, compared to

Rs 21,696 crore during the same period last year. The earnings from the coal sector saw a decline of Rs 5,313 crore to Rs 5,720 crore, c o m p a r e d t o Rs 11,033 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal year. The decline in coal freight traffic is mainly because of a fall in power demand. Staterun Coal India (CIL) saw its sales falling by 23 per cent in May and 26 per cent in April as power utilities

purchased less coal because of a fall in demand and higher stockpile.

The port is also planning to develop an Eco Park in association with Mangrove Cell, Forest Department and a MoU is being finalized for implementation of the Project, which essentially comprises Interpretation centre, watch tower for birds, parking place, Garden, restaurant and toilet blocks, for tourists to enhance Eco-tourism and education on biodiversity. JNPT not only aims to obtain economic efficiencies, but also focuses on ecological and social stability. Thus environmental protection will continue to be an integral part of JN Port's planning and operations.

Port of Rotterdam Authority decides to hold RFT for transport service along Container Exchange Route ROTTERDAM: The Port of Rotterdam Authority will be publishing a request for tenders among sector parties for the provision of a new transport service that enables container terminal operators at Maasvlakte to exchange containers via an dedicated road. This dedicated road, commonly known as the Container Exchange Route (CER), was especially constructed for this purpose. The European tender announcement concerns both the supply of hybrid transport vehicles and the actual transport of the containers (Transport As A Service). In this hybrid format, the vehicle can run both completely autonomously and operated by a human driver. The Port of Rotterdam Authority decided on this solution in view of the contribution hybrid autonomous transport can make to optimising efficiency of container exchanges between terminals, while simultaneously offering operators freedom of choice when it comes to timing on how containers are transported on their terminal. The Port of Rotterdam Authority intends to appoint its subsidiary PortShuttle as operator of the CER. In effect, this means that PortShuttle will be responsible for planning transport runs, administration, and invoicing. Hybrid setup for CER transport The transport vehicles will operate completely autonomously between the different connected terminals on Maasvlakte. From the moment a vehicle leaves the CER proper and enters the terminal site, it can either continue its route steered by a human driver or on an autonomous basis. This is up to the individual operators and may differ from company to company – depending among other things on how the terminal grounds and facilities are laid out. Tender process Following the publication of the request for tenders on the TenderNed website, sector parties are invited to contact the Port of Rotterdam Authority to indicate their interest and submit their tender for review. Provided one or more of the submitted proposals offer attractive terms, the Port Authority intends to select a winning bid from these tenders – with this selection being either provisional or final – in the first quarter of 2021.

CER planning According to planning, construction on the CER will be rounded off in the first quarter of 2021. After a period of testing, the commercial operationalisation of the new road can start at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021. Why did the port of Rotterdam decide to realise the CER? With a recorded throughput of over 14.8 million TEU in 2019. Rotterdam ranks as Europe’s largest container port. In order to handle such massive volumes swiftly and efficiently, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has commissioned the realisation of a dedicated road connection for the terminals at Maasvlakte. The Container Exchange Route (CER) is an internal 17-km track that can be used for the efficient transport of containers between different locations. The CER enables rail operators, inland shipping companies and feeder operators to optimise their terminal calls. Once the CER has been taken into operation on a commercial basis – most likely in the fourth quarter of 2021 – the participating container terminals, empty depots, the National Inspectorate Terminal, distribution centres and other users will be able to use the vehicles that run along this route to exchange containers with other parties. This exchange will be both swifter and less expensive than existing arrangements and will significantly reduce congestion in the areas around the terminals. Moreover, the CER can help to simplify administrative procedures – when it comes to customs paperwork, for example. This will improve the overall provision of containerrelated services in ‘container hub’ Rotterdam. The result? Greater flexibility, improved connectivity, reduced congestion risks, shorter port stays and lower costs. In short: the Container Exchange Route can be expected to further improve the port of Rotterdam’s accessibility and competitive position. A smoothly functioning CER, combined with a more competitive transport rate, will raise efficiency in container handling, which in turn will result in higher throughput volumes for the port of Rotterdam – and more employment at the terminals.
