JNPT Inaugurates Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Project • This project is commissioned under Green Port Initiative of JNPT • Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Project is first of its kind of project in the port sector set up by JNPT NAVI MUMBAI: In a major push under green port initiatives and with a vision to achieve sustainability goals, Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT inaugurated the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Project at JNPT Township in the presence of Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPT and HODs. The newly inaugurated, 10 MT/Day Solid Waste management is designed as per SWM Rules 2016 based on BARC technology. It is based on a Bio Gas plant for 5 MT/Day capacity with power generation from Biogas and production of biogas and generation power setup. Cont’d. Pg. 6

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is an ambitious plan of the Government of India, SBM originates from the vision of the Government for ensuring hygiene, waste management, and sanitation across the nation and aims for a Clean India under a collaborative framework of multiple stakeholders. One of the key mission objectives is to develop a modern and scientific solid waste treatment and disposal facility. JNPT constantly focuses on sustainability to minimize the impact of the port's operations on the

environment and surrounding communities. On the environment conservation front, the port has undertaken many green initiatives which include harnessing solar power, sewage treatment plant for recycling of wastewater, e-RTGCs and also projects like the development of an Eco Park, marine conservancy, and comprehensive plantation. The port has also switched to LED lights at the port area to lower energy consumption & decrease carbon footprint. The port not only aims to obtain economic efficiencies but also focuses on ecological and social stability. Thus environmental protection will continue to be an integrated aspect in JN Port's planning and operations.

Logistics sector reports sequential recovery in Dec 2020: Ind-Ra Cont’d. from Pg. 3 India’s port volumes grew 4 percent YoY (November 2020: 3 percent YoY) while e-way bill generation increased 16 percent YoY during the month. Railway volumes also rose 9 percent YoY in December 2020 (November 2020: 9 percnet YoY), though they remained down 2 percent YoY in April-December 2020. While passenger numbers for airlines are still down on a YoY basis, the start of vaccination drives in several countries globally and the Indian government allowing 80 percent of fleet to be deployed are key positives recently. While both these developments should be supportive of a recovery in operating cash flow and liquidity in coming months, this will likely be offset at least partly by ongoing higher fuel prices (Brent crude up 158 percent in May 2020-January 2021). Port volumes grow again as ExportImport trade turns a corner India’s export-import volume turned positive (5 percent YoY) in December 2020 for the first time since February 2020, as port volumes posted a second consecutive month of positive growth. It rose 7 percent MoM and 4 percent YoY in December 2020. During April-December 2020, the overall

volumes remained down 9 percent YoY. The growth in December has been led by strong YoY growth in iron ore (14 percent), other liquids (16 percent) and container volumes (15 percent) as well as other goods segment (13 percent). The growth was partially offset by a YoY volume decline in petroleum, oil and lubricants (3 percent), fertilisers (7 percent) and thermal coal (11 percent). Petroleum, oil and lubricant volumes though grew 9 percent MoM in December 2020 which arrested the decline in volumes to 3 percent YoY (November 2020: down 12 percent YoY; October: down 23 percent YoY). Container freight rates remained elevated with a substantial increase of about 150 percent during MarchDecember 2020, due to the shortage of containers amid a demand-supply imbalance. Port dwell time for import containers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust remained stable at 21 hours in December 2020 while for export containers it stood at 77 hours. Road transport volume growth continues; Freight rates stable amid higher diesel prices Road, as well as rail volumes, continued to grow in December 2020,

even as truck freight rates remained stable, amid rising diesel prices. E-way bill generation grew 16 percent YoY to Rs, 64 million in December 2020, while it increased 11 percent MoM. E-way bill generation had earlier surged in October 2020, largely driven by the festive demand, before falling mom during November 2020, though it had continued to witness YoY growth. Diesel consumption declined 3 percent YoY in December 2020 (November 2020: down 7 percent YoY; October 2020: up 7 percent YoY). The consumption, declined 1 percent MoM in December 2020. Average freight rates remained flat in December 2020 compared to November 2020, while diesel prices increased to about INR73.9/litre from about INR72.4/litre. The market share of rail increased in December to 26 percent for export containers while it declined to 6 percent for import containers (November 2020: 20 percent for export containers and 17 percent for import containers). The waiver of haulage charges for moving empty containers by Indian Railways is likely to have resulted in market share gains for export containers.

Container Shipping sector navigates Covid pandemic, says expert Cont’d. from Pg. 3 The FBX reading for containers from China bound for the west coast of the United States has nearly tripled since late May to $4,286 on 6th Feb. “The costs of shipping goods from China to Europe by water have hit unprecedented highs recently,” said UniCredit Bank economist Andreas Rees. That is due to rampant demand for China’s manufactured products, particularly for medical equipment during the global health emergency — but also for consumer goods from lockdown-bound populations. ‘Exponential’ demand increase “First, demand of medical goods produced in China have been strongly rising. Second, and probably more important, consumers have been reallocating their demand,” said Rees. “Instead of going to restaurants and travelling, they have been demanding more durable goods such as electronic equipment, furniture, etc, to have a nice home. And many of these goods are produced in China.” That has had a knock-on effect on demand for the gigantic container ships that transport vast amounts of goods from

the Asian powerhouse. “Container shipping costs are soaring from Asia, not just to the UK but to most destinations for shipments out of China and Asia,” Braemar analyst Jonathan Roach told AFP. “With increased durable demand, container demand has increased exponentially.” Nevertheless, the pandemic did also spark a overall 4.1-percent decline in world maritime trade last year, according to recent estimates from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Bottlenecks have however been created across the sector due to strict Covid-19 hygiene and sanitation measures in ports, logistics centres and storage depots worldwide. The turnaround time between unloading a container ship and returning has therefore increased significantly, according to Roach. That further limits the available pool of vessels. “When there is a delay in shipping empties back to loading hubs and the same time as a cargo surge, availability of empty container equipment

will tighten,” Roach added. “We expect this imbalance (between supply and demand) to continue while strict Covid-19 restrictions remain in place.” Ination fears Rising transportation costs can meanwhile feed through into higher consumer prices and spark concern among global central banks, which keep close tabs on building inflationar y pressures. “There is still the question of whether and to which extent companies can pass on higher prices to consumers,” noted Rees. “As of today, only a moderate cost-push to consumer price inflation seems likely. But the pattern certainly needs to be closely monitored.” Turning to the outlook, Roach remains upbeat due to the growing global Covid-19 vaccination drive. “We do expect (consumer) spending to normalise as the vaccine rollout gathers pace — and a correction in the spending switch should normalise freight demand. We expect that to happen towards the middle of 2021.”

India’s Coal Import rises by 15% in December NEW DELHI: The country’s coal import rose by 15.1% to 23.63 million tonnes (MT) in December 2020 compared to 20.52 MT in the year-ago month. Non-coking coal imports were at 15.63 MT in December this fiscal against 14.21 MT in the same month last fiscal. Coking coal imports were at 5.36 MT against 4.47 MT in December 2019-20, according to provisional data compiled by mjunction services. Port of Antwerp, MMCC to construct industrial complex ANTWERP : Mercur y Maritime Concession Company Limited (MMCC) and Port of Antwerp are collaborating to build the proposed $2.9 billion Escravos Seaport Industrial Complex (ESIC), to boost economic and national development of the nation, particularly, Delta State. Speaking at a briefing in Lagos at the Sailing Club exhibition race 2021, Rear Admiral Andrews Okoja (rtd), the Chairman of MMCC, said that the Escravos seaport, which would be on 20,000 hectares of land, comprises deep seaport, international airport, Free Trade Zone, crude oil refinery and gas complex, an estate and recreational components. He stated: “When we got our provisional approval, one of the first things we are supposed to do is to put together a team of consultant financiers and partners. And one of the partners that played a major role in the seaport complex project is the Escravos Seaport project,

actually it is a deep seaport project. “They have visited us and signed a partnership paper agreement with us on this project. They came to Lagos and they have other programmes with Delta State. And we intend to continue our relationship with Port of Antwerp International on this particular project.” According to him, the engine that drives the Escravos Seaport Complex project is the intricate relationship between maritime, economy and national development, adding that the project is in two-phase, which is known as ESIC 1 and ESIC 2. He explained that ESIC 1 is the seaport complex, which is the backbone of the project while the ESIC2 would open up the water way transportation from Escravos Seaport into the hinterland via River Niger and Benue and other regions such as Onitsha, Lokoja, Makurdi and others. However, he said that MMCC is working with the Lagos State Government to develop the Snake Island into an industrial estate. He said all protocols and everything on the project have been

completed while waiting for the State Government to pass the project through its Executive Council of the Governor. Kristof Watershoot, the Managing Director of Port of Antwerp, said: “At Antwerp Port International, we are very convinced in the general potential future of the whole region especially for Nigeria, we are convinced in the future of new port project in this country. “As we met with the team of MMCC on several occasions, we will start working together with the team on further developing the Escravos Seaport project together with other partners and there are a lot of them available. “On our side, it will be a step by step approach. We start collaboration on the partner side and we signed the collaboration. As you know, this kind of project, have a lot of steps to take and step by step, we need to see how the team can further grow and how we can help in making the project realised,” he said. The Escravos Seaport is conceptualised as a modern deep seaport that will handle container Ro-Ro vessels, specialised cargo and general cargo.

Geotagging of Warehouses in works for location tracking NEW DELHI : The Government is working on geotagging all warehouses, cold storages and refrigerated vans in the country for real-time tracking of the location and status of space availability. The data will be captured in a mobile app, which can be used by the government as well as farmers to locate the nearest warehouses and store their produce, reducing the risk of wastage. This will also help curb distress sale by farmers and help them get a remunerative price for their produce by timing their sale rightly. “We have mandated the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) to identify and

geotag the agri storage infrastructures (ASIs) across the country. So far, a survey of 82,000 ASIs has been completed out of 1.08 lakh structures identified across the country. After verification, the GPS coordinates and the data will be uploaded on Google Maps for public use,” said a senior food ministry official, who did not wish to be identified. He said the country suffers harvest losses of about 15% due to lack of information on storage facilities. “As per an estimate we lose Rs 44,000 crore every year due to harvest rot. Even if there are storage facilities available in the vicinity, farmers don’t know about them.

With the mobile app, they will have access to information and space status of nearest warehouses, cold storages and mobile refrigerated vans,” said the official. He said the total storage capacity in the country is about 162 million tonnes, out of which cold storage capacity is just 32 million tonnes. “Cold storage facilities are dominated by the private sector. We need more than double the existing capacity to safeguard the interest of our farmers. By providing them proper agri infrastructures, we can encourage them to shift to high-value horticulture produce from food grains which are in excess,” said the official.

India, UK to launch Enhanced Trade Partnership during British PM’s India visit NEW DELHI: India and the UK have held discussions on promoting bilateral trade and investments between the two countries, and decided to launch an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) during the visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson here. The issue came up at a meeting between commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, and UK Secretary of State for International Trade Elizabeth Truss MP on February 6. “In a significant step forward, the ministers agreed that this partnership would formally be launched during the visit of the UK Prime Minister to India,

later this year,” the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement. Johnson, who had cancelled a trip to India where he would be the Chief Guest of the Republic Day celebrations citing the need to oversee the Covid-19 pandemic response in the UK, is likely to visit India ahead of the G7 Summit in June. As per the statement, the two sides reviewed the ongoing engagements between the two sides for an ETP to develop a roadmap that would lead to a potential comprehensive FTA (free trade agreement), including considerations on an interim pact on a preferential basis.

Last year, the two sides said they were committed to a free trade agreement that will start off with early harvest agreements. India's goods exports to the UK were $4.55 billion in April-November FY21 while imports were $2.61 billion. “They also reviewed progress in removing market access barriers on both sides and ongoing cooperation in response to Covid-19,” the ministry said. The two sides also expressed commitment to relaunch the UK-India CEO Forum and agreed on the Forum’s meeting at the earliest, according to the statement.

Stevedores in crisis as Port owned berths heading for privatisation at Major Ports MUMBAI: Facing a threat to their existence, stevedores and shore handling agents have urged the Ministry of ports, shipping and waterways to re-consider the policy to privatise the cargo terminals at Centre-owned port trusts, that are run by the State. Stevedores and shore handling agents load and unload bulk cargo from and onto ships from the major port trusts run nonmechanised, common user facilities after buying licenses from the port authorities by paying an annual fee of Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 1 lakh depending on the port. These entities are engaged directly by the exporters and importers based on competitive quotations to load and unload cargo. New rules, new ways The cargo berths/terminals run by the port trusts would be privatised when they are converted inti authorities under a new law currently awaiting Rajya Sabha approval. This is because the ‘port authority’ formed under the proposed Major Port Authorities Bill will play the role of a landlord – a model widely followed globally wherein the publicly governed port authority acts as a regulatory body and as landlord while private

firms carry out port operations, mainly cargo handling activities. The landlord port, in return, gets a share of the revenue from the private entity. “Major ports will be moving from managing their operational services on their own to a model where a private partner will manage it for them,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her Budget speech on February 1. “For the purpose, 7 projects worth more than Rs. 2,000 crores will be offered by the major ports on Public Private Partnership mode in FY21-22,” she added. “This push appears to provide an easy platform for private port operating companies to make an entry into major ports,” says Ishwar Achanta, President, Federation of Association of Stevedores. Cause and effect “This move will ensure loss of livelihood for the licensed stevedores at major ports and leave thousands of workers jobless and hand over precious assets to private companies, who would have no qualms about setting tariffs to suit their commercial interests,” Achanta stated. “It is the stevedores who have marketed

and brought the cargo to the major ports, promoted door to door logistics, bonded facilities for stock and sale, invested in cargo handling equipment and systems and established hinterland connectivity,” he stated. The stevedores body feels that outdated and antiquated policies and tariff regimes have created inefficiencies at major ports while improper implementation of existing policies have led to higher costs. “Major ports insist on charging for services which are not provided, leading to unwarranted higher tariffs and escalated last mile costs,” Achanta added. Separately, most of the major port trusts have notified new regulations on licensing of stevedoring and shore handling agents that sets out the terms for issuing permits including fees and rates for handling different types of cargo. The stevedores’ body has urged the ministry to “revise” the stevedoring and shore handling regulations arguing that they were “detrimental” to their interests, “impractical and stringent”. NEW DELHI: Indian Railways is focusing on international connectivity through the Northeast, particularly with Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Anshul Gupta said recently. Train connectivity to Bangladesh is nearing completion, while survey work for linking Nepal with the region has also begun, Gupta told reporters at a press conference here. Work is yet to start in the Myanmar sector, he said. “The NFR has been allocated Rs 8,060 crore in the union budget this year, which is Rs 1,511 crore more than the budgetary allocation in the previous fiscal,” he said. Adequate funds have been allotted for railway connectivity to the capital cities of all the eight northeastern states by March 2023, speed augmentation of trains in the region by doubling of high density network (HDN) sections along with electrification of the entire network, the

NFR general manager said. “GPS based train collision avoidance system (TCAS) in high density networks (HDN) and highly utilized networks (HUN) routes of the NFR have been sanctioned in the budget,” he said. Automatic block signaling (ABS) and centralized traffic control (CTC) for HDN routes of the NFR have also been sanctioned in the budget. Aesthetically designed vista dome LHB coaches will be introduced on tourist circuits to give a better travel experience to tourists willing to travel in the Northeast region and this will be done in consultation with the respective state governments, Gupta said. “Hundred percent electrification of all routes under the NFR is on and this policy will give a boost to the economy of the northeastern states, along with providing efficient pollution-free transportation needs in the region,” he said. Gupta also highlighted the freight

business development (FBD) portal, which is a one-stop solution for freight/parcel customers and other initiatives taken for providing optimized logistic services to freight customers. More emphasis has been given to freight movement due to the pandemic with unloading of 9,361 freight carrying rakes from April last year to 21 January. Out of the 75 goods sheds in the NE region, 15 are already working 24/7 for the benefit of loaders and transporters, he said. Introduction of Kisan Rail trains has helped farmers to send their produces to faroff markets, Gupta said. A subsidy of 50 percent is allowed for transportation of fruits and vegetables through these trains, Gupta said. Refrigerated parcel vans to ferry pineapple and other fruits and vegetable from the Northeast to other parts of the country is also available for booking, he added.

made as part of A . P. M o l l e r Maersk. One of our facilities, APM Terminals Gothenburg, is an encouraging example of how we can make change already Mr. Keith Svendsen now. In 2019, we launched the Gothenburg Green Gateway with the aim of switching to completely carbon-neutral container handling without an increase in cost for our customers. Several other terminals have done the same. This is not only a response to the demand from Customers, but a clear signal and ambition from our side that port operations can, and need to be, more sustainable. Every brain in the game We believe a lot more we can be achieved - both for our customers and our communities – and being a people’s business we will help our associates to develop their talents and skills. If we get, as I like to say, “every brain in the game”, we will continue to improve our impact in everything we do. In APM Terminals we have a proven system for achieving it. Change at the helm of Hamburg Süd H A M B U R G : Hamburg Süd, which is recognised for its longterm, strong customer relationships, has successfully established its brand as part of A.P. Moller-Maersk. Since Hamburg Süd was acquired, the company has been gradually integrating and realising significant synergies at the same time as keeping local empowerment and thereby securing the flexibility to meet customer needs. Going into the next phase, focus will be on securing and further strengthening customer relations. To lead this phase, long-serving Hamburg Süd Executive Poul Hestbaek will take over the reins from Dr Arnt Vespermann, who after more than 20 years with Hamburg Süd has decided to leave the company. The change will take place by end of the first quarter 2021. “We promised our customers that Hamburg Süd’s DNA would remain unchanged during the integration process, and that they would continue to enjoy the excellent service they are accustomed to from our teams at local level. We have kept that promise”, says Dr Arnt Vespermann. Vespermann adds: “A.P. Moller-Maersk’s multi-brand strategy has been established on the global markets. Going for ward, we will place an even stronger focus on implementing this strategy and strengthening our Hamburg Süd brand in terms of customer relations, such as in our Key Account Management efforts. Thus, now is the ideal time for me to relinquish the helm to Poul Hestbaek”. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Arnt Vespermann for his dedication and leadership. Arnt has played an instrumental role in ensuring the very successful

integration of Hamburg Süd. In the year of the acquisition, Hamburg Süd even grew the volumes, which is a sign of the b r a n d ’ s extremely high Mr. Poul Hestbaek c u s t o m e r loyalty”, says Vincent Clerc, CEO Ocean and Logistics at A.P. Moller - Maersk. “Poul Hestbaek represents continuity thanks to his many years with Hamburg Süd, and with his customer mindset he will lead the continued development and strengthening of Hamburg Süd within the family of Maersk brands. With this leadership transition we start a new chapter in Hamburg Süd’s journey as a highly respected brand in the marketplace”. Poul Hestbaek has been with the company since 2004 and is currently the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Hamburg Süd. The 59-year- old shipping-industr y veteran has previously been responsible for the liner shipping company’s commercial business on several continents, including Latin America, Europe and Asia/Pacific. Dr Arnt Vespermann joined Hamburg Süd in 1999 as the head of its Legal department and became the director of the tramp shipping subsidiary Rudolf A. Oetker KG in 2006. He has been a member of Hamburg Süd’s Management Board since 2009 and the company’s CEO since late 2017.
