A lot is happening at BLR

Special height containers have been designed keeping in mind the height of the servers. Apart from trucking, the unloading of the servers at site is also being handled by BLR, which is termed as “White Glove” delivery. Which require special expertise and equipment in material handling. BLR has invested almost a crore of rupees to procure these handling equipment. We have always tried to provide cost effective solutions to our clients, says Mr. Ashok Goyal - MD of BLR Logistiks. One of our clients was not able to utilise the vehicle space effectively due to the odd shape of the cargo.Our solutions design team put their heads together and came out with a double decker vehicle where the loading capacity doubled and we could bring down the logistics cost by more than 30% . Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Speaking to Mr Abhishek Goyal - Director new initiatives, informed that Chemical transportation is another SPECIALIZED area where a lot of emphasis is on safety. We have regular training conducted for our drivers and supervisors who handle chemicals. Our vehicles are equipped with robotic devices that help in analysing driver behaviour and even retina scanners that monitor the drivers eyes to look for lapse in attention such as drowsiness, mobile use, etc.. and alerts the driver with a loud buzzer.

BLR has also managed to achieve a no night driving policy with outsourced vehicles, which at one point seemed almost impossible given how unorganised the outsourced transport sector is. With the help of counselling at site by our safety team and a 24*7 control tower, every vehicle is monitored round the clock. Since we outsource almost 10000 trips a month, tracking was a major pain, which was overcome by tracking the driver's mobile with the help of a technology partner and using portable trackers. Apart from chemicals, it also provides specialised air suspension vehicles for carrying highly sensitive goods like servers, medical equipment. We now have the largest eet, which comprises vehicles from 18 feet to 40 feet.

Recently we have purchased 45 feet containers for a FMCG customer and they have been able to save almost 20% on their current logistics cost. Apart from trucking, BLR is focusing on bonded and general warehousing and has added almost 5 lacs of warehousing space in the past 2 years. It also provides warehouse audit solutions and after seeing the results,one of the clients offered to operate 6 of their warehouses at various locations in India . Looking at the opportunity in reefer transportation, we have added a few reefer vehicles in our pool and plan to expand the fleet in the coming years as well. On talking about expansion plans, Mr. Ashok Goyal mentioned that they are planning to expand their rail transportation and coastal movement to complement their road transportation business as moving cargo on long routes from south India to North India by using all the 3 modes had given considerable cost advantage to their clients. Looking at the current trend in ocean freight, BLR, which already holds a MTO license , is mulling to enter into this space as well. With that said, “BLR has grown from a road transportation company to a fully equipped 3PL Logistics player that can handle all your logistics needs under one roof.”

CONCOR-Maersk commenced weekly scheduled Rail services from ICD Ankleshwar

A H M E DA B A D : C o n t a i n e r Corporation Of India Ltd (CONCOR) in association with Maersk India commenced weekly scheduled rail service from its Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Ankleshwar to the Gateway Port JN Port. This is a joint initiative by CONCOR & Maersk for a short haul rail service for the Chemical industries in the South Gujarat, CONCOR said in a release. The train will depart on scheduled time on every Thursday. The first rake loaded with export containers of Maersk India was loaded on 29.07.2021 (Thursday) and flagged off by the major industry players. As per the commitment, CONCOR dispatched its 2nd train on 05.08.2021 (Thursday) as per the schedule announced during the first rake departure. Shri Madhukar Roat, CGM/CONCOR Ahmedabad Cluster informed that trade & industry can avail end-to-end logistics solutions through CONCOR & Maersk, with First Mile transport solutions for door pick up of their export containers through FMLM (First Mile Last Mile) initiative of CONCOR. Shri Roat also mentioned that presently CONCOR Ankleshwar is already moving approx.. 55-57 rakes per month connecting JNPT,

Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi NCR, etc Mr. Vivek Gadre, President of Atul Ltd, Mr. Shailendra Dixit, DGM (Commercial) of Coromandel International Ltd, Mr. Munna Kothari, Commercial Manager of UPL Ltd, and Maersk India Team of officers including Mr. Arvind Ambo, Head (Sales, Commercial, Project cargo & e-commerce-India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka), Ms. Ishta Anil Jain, Mr. Bhavesh Baretha, Mr. Keyur B Patel from Maersk India Ltd. Were present in the flag off ceremony last week. Ms Ishita Jain of Maersk India expressed that this initiative of joint effort will enable to reduce the carbon foot print by shifting from road to rail. Mr. Sudhakar Sen, Terminal Manager, CONCOR ICD Ankleshwar conveyed that this terminal is equipped to cater the requirement of export-import trade as well as domestic containerized movement within India in all sense. Mr. Arvind Ambo of Maersk India Ltd assured to provide best of the class services to the chemical trade of South Gujarat through ICD Ankleshwar. Mr. Vivek Gadre, President Atul Ltd and other trade members present during the flag off ceremony of the first weekly rake has appreciated this joint effort of CONCOR & Maersk and requested the industry to avail this service regularly.

India’s total auto exports in Q1 2021-22 stood at 1.4 million units : SIAM NEW DELHI: At a time when domestic auto sales have been choked by Covid-19, Indian manufacturers finally have something to cheer about: the export market. According to data from SIAM (the Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers), India’s total auto exports in the first quarter of fiscal 2021-22 (Q1, from April to June) was 1.4 million units, over three times the figure in the same period in the previous year. Two-wheeler manufacturers saw an especially large boost, exporting about 1.1 million units in this period, compared to 337,983 units a year ago. With the industry having seen major disruptions over the past year and a half due to Covid lockdowns and cutbacks on discretionary spending by consumers, this has proved a major relief. As a matter of fact, export figures for two-wheelers in Q1 2021-22 were better even than figures from pre-Covid times, higher than exports in the previous three years (see graphic Outward Bound). Exports of passenger vehicles in Q1 2021-22 totalled 127,115 units, up from 43,619 in the same period in 2020-21. “Exports this year will

definitely be better than last year, since many countries we export to did not go through the strict lockdowns that India has seen,” says R.C. Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki. His firm shipped the most passenger vehicles during this period—45,056 units—followed by Hyundai Motors India, which shipped 28,881 units. However, though passenger vehicle sales were better in Q1 2021-22 than in Q1 2020-21, the figures lag behind those in Q1 2019-20 and Q1 201819. As a result, industry experts are adopting a wait-and-watch attitude before commenting on whether this year’s figures indicate a long-term trend. “Although the regional lockdowns prevented companies from selling in India since most dealerships were closed, many states allowed companies to export,” says Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM. “We will have to wait and see whether the uptick in sales is specific to the first quarter of the current fiscal year or whether it is a sustainable trend.” Exports as a percentage of production were the highest in Q1 2021-22—about 31 per cent—compared to the corresponding quarters in the previous three years.

Car exports pick up at Chennai, Kamarajar Ports CHENNAI: The dwindling car exports that followed the pandemic have finally shown signs of a slow pickup at the Chennai and Kamarajar Ports in the State. Kamarajar port, which saw a drop of 50 per cent in volumes last year, is now hoping to consolidate it with two new agreements signed with vehicle makers Isuzu Motors and Daimler. Port Chairman Sunil Paliwal said, “They were already using our port. We have offered them volume-based concession and a long term agreement. So this year looks much better compared to the last.” He added that in 2019-2020, the port was able to do good business with vehicle volumes of two lakh, which fell to about half of it last financial year. “There is an impact of the pandemic this year as well. However, we may be able to cross 1.5 lakh volumes,” says Paliwal. This comes as Renault India has commenced exports of its sub-4 metre compact SUV Renault Kiger to South Africa, and the first batch of 760 cars was despatched from the Kamarajar Port on Saturday. Developed and produced in India, Renault had commenced

exports to Nepal earlier this month. The cars are manufactured in the facility located at Oragadam near Chennai. The cars were jointly flagged off by Venkatram Mamillapalle, country chief executive officer and Managing Director, Renault India Operations and Paliwal. “We look forward to expanding Kiger’s exports to many international markets soon, including Indonesia, parts of Africa and SAARC region, along with growing our customer base in India,” said Mamillapalle. Paliwal hopes this will in turn help pick up the trade for Kamarajar Port in 2022-23. We expect to cross the export volume of more than two lakh cars. Even Chennai Port is positive on having more volumes of vehicles exported from there,” he said. Chennai Port Chairman P Raveendran said that compared to the first quarter of last financial year (2020-21), this year’s corresponding quarter has been good. “During the first quarter of last year, we exported 13,500 vehicles only due to the pandemic. This quarter it has jumped by 170 per cent, that is we exported 38,600 vehicles,” he said.

NEW DELHI: In a first of its kind initiative, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi interacted with Heads of Indian Missions abroad and stakeholders of the trade & commerce sector via video conference. The Union Commerce Minister and External Affairs Minister were also present during the interaction. The interaction also witnessed participation of Secretaries of more than twenty departments, state government officials, members of Export Promotion Councils and Chambers of Commerce. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that this is the time for Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Along with celebrating the 75th festival of independence, this is an opportunity to build a clear vision and roadmap for future India. In this, our Export Ambitions and all the stakeholders play a major role. He added that today the world is shrinking every day due to physical, technological and financial connectivity. In such an environment, new possibilities are being created around the world for the expansion of our exports. He lauded the stakeholders for this initiative and commended the enthusiasm, optimism and commitment shown by all of them to achieve our ambitious goals regarding exports. He reminded that one of the major reasons, India had the highest share in the global economy in the past was it’s strong trade and exports. He stressed on the importance of strengthening our exports in regaining our old share in the global economy. The Prime Minister urged the stakeholders to put all their efforts to take advantage of the new opportunities created by the changes in the Global Supply Chain in the Post Covid Global World. Considering the size of our economy and potential, our manufacturing and service industry base, there is tremendous potential for export growth. He added that when the country is moving towards the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat, one of its goals is to increase India's share in exports manifold. He said that to achieve this we have to make sure that we get access to the global supply chain, so that our business can scale and grow. He added that our industry will also have to move towards the best technology, focus on innovation and increase share in R&D. He said our share in the Global Value Chain will grow only by following this path. While encouraging competition and excellence, we have to prepare global champions in every sector, he stressed. The Prime Minister listed four factors that are very important for increasing exports. Manufacturing in the country has increased manifold and that has to be qualitatively competitive. Second, The problems of transport, logistics should be removed for that centre, states and private stakeholders will have to work continuously. Third, The government should walk shoulder to shoulder with the exporters and, finally, the international market for Indian products needs to be expanded . He said only when these four factors are synergized, India will be able to achieve the goal of Make in India for the world in a better way. The Prime Minister said today, the government in the country, in the states is moving forward, understanding the needs of the business world. He listed the initiatives of the Government to boost MSMEs like many relaxations given in compliances under Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan

and provision of Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme of Rs 3 lakh crore. He also noted that the Production Linked Incentive Scheme will not only help in increasing the scale of our manufacturing but also increase the level of global quality and efﬁciency. This will develop a new ecosystem of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The country will get new Global Champions in Manufacturing and Export. He elaborated how Production Linked Incentives helped to strengthen the mobile phone manufacturing sector. The mobile phone sector, we are also experiencing its impact. 7 years ago, we used to import mobile phones worth about $ 8 billion. Now, it has come down to $2 billion. 7 years ago, India used to export mobile phones worth only $ 0.3 billion. Now it has increased to more than 3 billion dollars. The Prime Minister said the government, both at centre and states are also focussing to reduce the time and cost of logistics in the country. For this, work is going on at a rapid pace in every level to create a multimodal connectivity. The Prime Minister said continuous efforts are being made by the government to minimize the impact of Pandemic. It is our best effort to keep the virus infection under control. The work of vaccination is going on at a fast pace in the country today. Every possible step has been taken to solve all the problems of the countrymen and the industry. He added that our industry and business has also innovated during this period, by adapting itself to new challenges. The industry also helped the country deal with the medical emergency and also played a role in reviving growth. This is the reason that today along with drugs and pharmaceuticals, our exports have reached a new level in sectors like agriculture. He said today we are seeing positive signs not only of recovery in the economy but also about high growth. Therefore, this is a good time to set high targets for exports and achieve them. He said the Government is taking necessary steps at every level to achieve this. Recently, he said the Government has taken a major decision for our exporters to get a boost of about Rs 88000 crore rupees in the form of insurance cover. Similarly by rationalizing our export incentives our exports would be WTO compliant and will also get a boost. The Prime Minister stressed on the importance of stability in doing business. He said the decision taken by India to get rid of retrospective taxation shows our commitment, shows consistency in policies and gives a clear message to all the investors that India is not only opening the doors of new possibilities but the decisive Government of India, has the will to fulﬁll its promises. The Prime Minister stressed on the role of states in achieving the export targets and implementing reforms, attracting investment, easing of doing business and creating last mile infrastructure. He said the central government is working closely with the states to minimize the regulatory burden so as to increase export and investment. He said a healthy competition is being promoted between the states to make export hubs in the states. States are being encouraged to focus on one product in each district. The Prime Minister said our ambitious target regarding exports can be achieved only through a

holistic and detailed action plan. He urged the stakeholders to accelerate our existing exports and also work to create markets, new destinations for new products. At present, almost half of our exports are to only 4 major destinations. Similarly, about 60 percent of our exports are related to Engineering Goods, Gems and Jewellery, Petroleum and Chemical Products and Pharmaceuticals. He urged them to find new destinations and also take our new products to the world. He added that with the opening of sectors like Mining, Coal, Defense, Railways, our entrepreneurs are also getting new opportunities to increase exports. The Prime Minister said to the Ambassadors, officials from the Ministry of External Affairs that in whichever country they are representing India, they understand the needs of that country very well. He asked them to act as a bridge for the commerce industry here. He urged that India Houses present in different countries should also be representative of the manufacturing power of India. He requested the Ministry of Commerce to put in place such a system so that there is a constant communication between our exporters and our missions. The Prime Minister said for maximum benefit to our economy from our exports, we have to build a seamless and high quality supply chain within the country as well. For this we need to build a new relationship and a new partnership. He requested all Exporters to strengthen partnership with our MSMEs, farmers and our fishermen, promote our Startups and support them. The Prime Minister gave a call to establish a new identity of Quality and Reliability. He said it is our endeavor to create a natural demand for high value-added products of India in every nook and corner of the world. He assured the industry, all the exporters that the government will support them in every way. He urged the industry to prove the resolve of Atmanirbhar Bharat and a prosperous India! Union External Affairs Minister Shri S. Jaishankar highlighted the unique character of the event. He said that while the theme of the event is local goes global, the Indian Missions also need to be globally local to help connect our producers with the demand in specific countries. Union Commerce Minister Shri Piyush Goyal said that the global environment is favourable and we should look at leveraging comparative and competitive advantages with respect to other countries for increasing our exports. Heads of Indian Missions gave their inputs and suggestions to increase India’s exports. They talked about setting sector and region specific trade targets, the need to focus on value addition, quality standards of products, supply chain diversification, ensuring reliability in supplies and improving connectivity. They said that there is a need to focus on new markets and region specific products, while at the same time, maintaining our competitive edge in the regions and products where we are doing well currently.

Govt to implement districts as export hubs in a phased manner NEW DELHI: To tap the export potential of agricultural and industrial products, the Department of Commerce, through the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), is engaging with states and union territories to implement the Districts as Export Hub (DEH) initiative in all districts of the country in a phased manner, trade minister Piyush Goyal informed Parliament recently. “The objective of DEH initiative is to mobilize each district of the country to achieve its potential as an export hub. Under the DEH initiative, District Export Promotion Committees (DEPCs) have been constituted in most

of the districts and products/services with export potential have been identified in each district,” Goyal said in Rajya sabha. Goyal said DEPC meetings have been conducted in 619 districts of India. “State Export Strategy/ Policy has been prepared by 26 States. Further, Draft Export Action Plans have been prepared for 478 Districts,” he added. Under the DEH initiative, support may be provided in the form of infrastructure and logistics, ecommerce/ marketing/ branding, skill development/ training/testing facilities, research and development/technology upgradation, and export promotion/

outreach activities. Department of Commerce has also b e e n i m p l e m e n t i n g t h e Tr a d e Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) since FY 2017-18 with the objective of assisting central and state government agencies in creation of appropriate infrastructure for the growth of exports. The scheme provides assistance for setting up and up-gradation of infrastructure projects with overwhelming export linkages like border haats, land customs stations, quality testing and certification labs for exports, trade promotion centres, among others.

Exports to achieve inclusive growth by promoting farmers and artisans and engaging with Indian diaspora: Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO NEW DELHI: Hailing the Hon'ble Prime Minister for laying down a road map for Indian exports, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that his address and assurance of an all out support for exports has invigorated the exporters, who will go an extra mile to realise the target of US$ 400 Bn exports this fiscal. The Prime Minister has expressed his deep concerns on logistics challenges faced by exporters and appropriately

identified that logistics constraints and cost is a key challenge for exports and suggested both policy intervention and infrastructure creation to achieve it. President FIEO said that he is hopeful that the Government will do its best to address it expeditiously. President FIEO said that exporters will handhold startups, artisans and farmers to enter into the field of exports to have a mutually beneficial relationship. He said that FIEO will engage with Indian diaspora to facilitate

country's exports. The statement that the Government stands with exporters to help them to excel globally, said Mr Sakthivel, will go a long way not only in reducing compliance burden but also augmenting export production and diversifying exports base. He thanked the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Commerce & Industry and Textile Minister and External Affairs Minister for such engagement with exporters and other stakeholders.

Government not considering ban on import of toys : MoS Commerce NEW DELHI: Government is not considering ban on import of toys. Government has taken several steps for promoting indigenous toys makers in the country. The details are as follows(I) Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) vide Notification No. 33/2015-2020, dated 02.12.2019 has mandated sample testing of each consignment and no permission for sale unless the quality testing is successful to control the import of cheap and substandard toys. In case of failure, the consignment is either sent back or destroyed at the cost of the importer.

(ii) Basic Custom Duty (BCD) on Toys-HS Code-9503 has been increased from 20% to 60% in February, 2020. (iii) The Government has issued Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 on 25/02/2020 through which toys have been brought under compulsor y Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification with effect from 01/01/2021. As per the Quality Control Order (QCO), every toy shall confor m to the requirements of relevant Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under a license from BIS as per cheme-I of BIS

(Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. This QCO is applicable to both domestic manufacturers as well as foreign manufacturers who intend to export their toys to India. (iv) Ministry of Education organized Toycathon 21, a unique effort by 6 Ministries & Departments to crowd- source solutions to problems faced by toy industry. Over 1.2 lakh registrants for the event and submitted over 17,000 ideas and 13900 teams formed to win a large number of prizes up to Rs. 50 lakh.

VOC Port, the rst Major Port to launch e-cars TUTICORIN: The first batch of three ecars were flagged off last evening at theVO Chidambaranar Port Trust. These Tata Xpres-T electric vehicles have been supplied by M/s. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Joint venture of Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), under Ministry of Power,on wet lease basis, for a period of 6 years. Three more e-cars will be deployed in near future. As a part of wet lease agreement, EESL will also be providing Charging p o i n t s a t t h e Po r t , I n s u r a n c e , Registration, deployment of drivers, and maintenance of the vehicles. VOC

Port will pay monthly recurring cost to EESL. The EVs being deployed comprise a 21.50 kWh Lithium ion battery pack, capable of powering the vehicle for 231 Kilometres in a single charge. The battery pack would be powered by an AC charger set-up that can simultaneously

charge three cars (3 outputs) at a time with output power rating of 3.3kW per car. The charger set-up would be able to charge the battery from 0 to 100% in 8 hours. With zero tail-pipe emission, each electric vehicle would reduce the GHG footprint by more than 1.5 Tonnes of CO2 every year. Sarbananda Sonowal highlights support offered to Domestic Shipping Industry NEW DELHI: The total number of ships under Indian flag is 1488 with gross tonnage of 12.96 million tons. India ranks 18th in the World’s Shipping Tonnage. This information was given by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in Lok Sabha recently. Details of the Scheme are mentioned as below: The Scheme will be implemented with effect from 14.07.2021. Further, the Scheme will be implemented in the following manner: 1. For a ship which is flagged in India after 1st February, 2021a. And is less than 10 years at the time of flagging in India, the subsidy support would be extended @15% of the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company OR the actual difference between the quote offered by the Indian flag vessel exercising ROFR and the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company, whichever is less. b. And which is between 10 to 20 years old at the time of flagging in India, the subsidy support would be extended @10% of the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company OR the actual difference between the quote offered by the Indian flag vessel exercising ROFR

and the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company, whichever is less. c. The rate at which the above subsidy support is extended to ships at 1(a) &1(b) above would be reduced by 1% every year, till it falls to 10% and 5%, respectively, for the two categories of ships mentioned above. 2. For existing Indian flagged ship which is already flaggeda. And less than 10 years old on 1st February 2021, the subsidy support would be extended @10% of the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company OR the actual difference between the quote offered by the Indian flag vessel exercising ROFR and the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company, whichever is less. b. And between 10 to 20 years old on 1st February 2021, the subsidy support would be extended @5% of the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company OR the actual difference between the quote offered by the Indian flag vessel exercising ROFR and the quote offered by the L1 foreign shipping company, whichever is less. 3. The provisions of this subsidy support would not be available in a case where an Indian flagged vessel is the L1 bidder. 4. The eligible shipping company shall

be paid the subsidy amount along with the charter hire amount as per the contract terms by the tendering agency (user Departments/CPSEs) and the tendering agency (user Departments/CPSEs) will be then reimbursed. This is critical for preserving the time value of money and ensuring necessary return to the shipping firm. 5. The subsidy support would be extended only to those ships which have bagged the award after the implementation of the scheme. 6. Flexibility in allocation of funds for expenditure from one year to another and within the various Ministries / departments of the scheme. 7. Ships older than 20 years would not eligible for any subsidy under the scheme. 8. In view of the enlarged scope of the Scheme this Ministry shall seek allocation of such additional funds from the Department of Expenditure as may be required. 9. The scheme would be reviewed after 5 years. The said Scheme is expected to increase tonnage in Indian flag and thereby benefit all Indian seafarers by creating more job opportunities and more training slots for young Indian cadet boys and girls.

Government highlights Green Port initiatives undertaken in the Major Ports NEW DELHI: Government has undertaken green port initiatives in the major ports so that their environmental performance can be improved. The green port initiatives include acquisition of equipments for monitoring environmental pollution, acquisition of dust suppression systems, setting up of sewage/ waste water treatment plants, setting up of garbage disposal system for ports and ships, developing shore reception facility for wastes from ships, setting up projects for energy generation from renewable

energy sources, providing shore power to ships at berths, creating Oil Spill Response (Tier-1) capabilities at all ports, taking actions to improve harbour water quality, inclusion of sustainable practices in terminal design, development and operation, increasing green cover within port premises etc. Chemicals and dangerous materials are handled by different ports following guidelines of Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (PESO) and International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) codes.

Utilization of idle and vacant land at several ports in the country is ongoing process including development of port-led industrialization. Allotment of these land is done as per the Policy Guidelines for Land Management by Major Ports. The Government of India simplifies the procedure of allotment of land from time to time. Mormugao Port offers heavy concessions on availing its container shipping facilities PANJI: The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) in Goa has issued a notice offering heavy concessions on availing its container shipping facilities to quell rumours of the imminent closure of container services at the port. In a statement issued, the MPT said that a major container agent had asked its customers to stop taking container bookings

from MPT and the port authorities learnt that the only container feeder vessel operator from MPT Goa was going to discontinue the container vessel’s call at MPT. The MPT handles about 30,000-35,000 container traffic annually, officials said. It has now offered an inaugural discount on first call for container services offering a 100 percent concession on pilotage, port

dues and berth hire and 50 percent concession on the second call for a new container vessel operator’s feeder vessel. “ We r e q u e st t he su ppo r t o f a ll stakeholders in patronizing the port for containerized trade and assure you of our continued facilitation and co-operation,” the notice issued by the MPT’s traffic manager stated.

Forex reserves surge by $9.42 billion to all-time high of $620.57 billion MUMBAI: The country ’s foreign exchange reserves surged by USD 9.427 billion to record high of USD 620.576 billion in the week ended July 30, according to the latest RBI data. In the previous week ended July 23, the reserves had declined by USD 1.581 billion

to USD 611.149 billion. In the reporting week ended July 30, the rise in the reserves was on the back of an increase in foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major component of the overall reserves, the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) weekly data released on Friday showed.

FCA increased by USD 8.596 billion to USD 576.224 billion in the reporting week. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.

A.P. Moller - Maersk reports record earnings and continued growth momentum in logistics in Q2 Highlights and sensitivity guidance COPENHAGEN: In the second quarter of 2021, A.P. Moller - Maersk continued to deliver strong growth and profitability, with recordbreaking performance marking the 12th quarter of successive year-onyear earnings progress. Revenue grew 58 pct. to USD 14.2bn in Q2 and EBIT increased almost five times to USD 4.1bn. The net result came in at USD 3.7bn in the second quarter, bringing the net result for the first half of 2021 to USD 6.5bn. Return on invested capital (ROIC) is now at 23,7 pct. for the past 12 months. “The strong results benefited both from the exceptional circumstances in Ocean, where congestions and bottlenecks continued to drive up rates, and from solid progress in executing on our strategic transformation where we kept a firm focus on our customers need for integrated solutions across their supply chains. I am pleased with the strategic progress we have made and the high value generation. We continue to build a higher quality Ocean business with more long-term contracts, a rapidly growing logistics business, and a value creating terminals business. Our exceptional earnings and high cash flow enable us to further accelerate our transformation, invest in growing our activities, also through acquisitions and at the same time return cash to shareholders. To that effect we also announced today the acquisitions of Visible SCM and B2C Europe which complements our existing supply chain offering and addresses our customers need for E-commerce logistics,” said Søren Skou, CEO, A.P. Moller - Maersk. In Ocean, profitability in Q2 was driven by revenue growth to USD 11.1bn from USD 6.6bn and EBIT increased to USD 3.6bn from USD 0.5bn. The growth came from a 15 pct. rebound in volumes and an increase in average freight rates of 59 pct., as both long-terms contracts rates with key clients increased and short-term contracts were still impacted by congestions and bottlenecks. Logistics & Services delivered 38 pct. revenue growth to USD 2.2bn in Q2 with more than half coming from the top Ocean customers. Demand was strong across all product families and consequently EBIT more than tripled to USD 153m compared to

USD 42m in the same quarter last year, leading to an EBIT margin of 7.1 pct. Also, Gateway Terminals had a strong Q2 with volumes rebounding 24 pct. and persisting high storage income. Revenue increased to USD 969m from USD 723m last year, while EBIT doubled to USD 302m leading to an EBIT margin of 31.1 pct. Guidance for 2021 “The outlook for Q3 is strong and we expect that the current momentum in Ocean will continue into Q4, also benefitting our Terminals business. Logistics & Services will continue its strong growth pattern for the rest of the year. As communicated on 2 August, we have upgraded our guidance for 2021 to an underlying EBITDA of USD 18-19.5bn, an EBIT of 14-15.5bn and a free cash flow expected to be minimum USD 11.5bn,”Søren Skou said. Ocean is still expected to grow in line with global container demand, which is now expected to grow 6-8 pct. in 2021 (previously 5-7 pct. in 2021), still primarily driven by the export volumes out of China to the USA. For 2021-2022, the expectation for the accumulated CAPEX remains to be around USD 7bn. Earnings in Q3 are expected to exceed the level for Q2 2021. Trading conditions for the quarters ahead are, however, still subject to a higher-than-normal volatility due to the temporary nature of current demand patterns, disruptions in the supply chains and equipment shortages.

New BIMCO/ICS Seafarer Workforce Report warns of serious potential ofcer shortage OSLO: The new Seafarer Workforce Report from BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping warns that the industry must significantly increase training and recruitment levels if it is to avoid a serious shortage in the total supply of officers by 2026. Given the growing demand for STCW certified officers, the Report predicts that there will be a need for an additional 89,510 officers by 2026 to operate the world merchant fleet. The report estimates that 1.89 million seafarers currently serve the world merchant fleet, operating over 74,000 vessels around the globe. Trusted by ship operators, agencies and governments, the Seafarer Workforce Report – formerly the Manpower Report – is an essential management tool for those tasked with developing crewing and training strategies, delivering the market intelligence that the industry needs to plan for the future. The new report also highlights a current shortfall of 26,240 STCW certified officers, indicating that demand for seafarers in 2021 has outpaced supply. Although there has been a 10.8% increase in the supply of officers since 2015, this shortfall could be due to a reported increase in officers needed on board vessels, with an average of 1.4 officers required per berth. In addition, some officer categories are in especially short supply. There is a shortage of officers with technical experience

especially at Management Level, and in the tanker and offshore sectors there is a reported shortage of Management Level Deck Officers. The good news is that in the past five years the industry has made good progress in reducing officer turnover rates from 8% to 6%, retaining qualified seafarers and increasing the number of years that they serve at sea. Indeed, compared with estimates from the 2015 report, the average age of officers serving at Management Level and Operational Level has increased. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping says: “The Seafarer Workforce report warns of a shortfall in officers by 2026. To meet the future demand for seafarers it is vital that the industry actively promotes careers at sea and enhances maritime education and training worldwide, with a focus on the diverse skills needed for a greener and more digitally connected industry. This is especially important as we recover from the effects of the pandemic, and we will need to address the real concerns that we could see seafarers turning away from careers in shipping. We must analyse and respond to trends in seafarer retention, and continue regular monitoring of the global seafarer workforce, to ensure that the supply of STCW certified seafarers continues to keep pace with demand.”
