Samudera Shipping Line deploys CyberLogitec CARA to digitize operations for special cargo management CyberLogitec, the leading provider of m a r i t i m e , port/terminal and l o g i s t i c s operations technologies, announced the deployment of CARA, its Collaboration Platform, at Samudera Shipping Line. Gati to return to profitability next quarter : Allcargo Logistics MUMBAI: Allcargo Logistics expects Gati, the express courier services firm recently acquired, to return to profitability next quarter, after having been stalled by the coronavirus lockdown in the current quarter. Allcargo Chairman Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty also expects a brighter future for the Hyderabad-based subsidiary as it is awaiting a tax write-back of Rs 50-60 crore, thus close the fiscal year with a healthy bottomline. “We”ve applied for the Vivad Se Vishwas scheme, under which the Government is encouraging taxpayers to end their disputes with taxmen through negotiated settlement. “Gati has a disputed tax claim of Rs 150-160 crore and we hope to settle it at half… and thus will be able to write back
at least Rs 50-60 crore by December.” After its open offer, Allcargo now controls close to 47 per cent in Gati, and Shetty expects the integration of the two companies over the next 16 months. Allcargo had appointed turnaround experts Alvarez & Marsal to revive Gati and improve the best practices between the two companies. Customs to begin faceless cargo assessment for imports in Chennai and Bengaluru CHENNAI: Chennai and Bengaluru customs will begin faceless assessment of cargo in the first phase of the national roll-out of the program. The first phase will begin from June 8 and will be implemented across the country by the year end. “The Board has decided to begin Faceless Assessment in phases beginning with Customs stations which already have the experience of the pilot programs,” the Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC) said in a circular. To begin with, imports covered by Chapters 84 and 85 of the Customs Tariff Act, 1975 which includes machinery, mechanical appliances, electrical equipment and parts, will be allowed for faceless assessment while going through customs. The Customs Automated System will assign Bills of Entry filed for imports of these materials. “The phased roll-out plan envisages that Faceless Assessment shall be the norm pan India by December 31, 2020,” the Board added. Faceless assessment of cargo is part of a string of next generation reforms called ‘Turant Customs, which is aimed at speedy clearance of goods at air and sea ports, which in turn will benefit ease of doing business in India. CBIC has put into effect a proposal mooted in February to restructure existing commissionerates into to set up National Assessment Commissionerates (NACs) with the mandate to
examine assessment practices of imported articles across Customs stations and suggest measures to bring about uniformity and enhanced quality of assessments. “The NACs would be put in place as and when Faceless Assessment is rolled out in phases across the country,” CBIC said while notifying the proposal on June 5. Principal Chief Commissioners or Chief Commissioners concerned have been directed to set up dedicated cells called Turant Suvidha Kendras, in every customs station manned by custom officers to perform various functions, primarily, accepting Bond or Bank Guarantees, generating test memo and forwarding the samples, processing request for fee waiver for late filing and carrying out any other technical function. “COVID-19 has put the digital India initiative in the spotlight and there is an expectation from all the revenue collectors to become 100% online and automated,” said Rajat Mohan, Senior Partner at AMRG Associates. The CBIC has introduced various reforms earlier such as single window interface for facilitating trade, e-Sanchit (e-Storage and computerised handling of indirect tax documents), and direct port delivery, among others. However, India’s exportimport trade has often flagged issues of seaports carrying out their own assessment and examination which varies from port to port, and divergent practices being adopted by authorities.

Last December, Allcargo announced buying a controlling stake in Gati for around Rs 416 crore and thus entering
the express logistics space. Gati has a wide-ranging customer base across corporates, e-commerce companies, as well as small and medium enterprises. It has a presence across 727 districts catering to 19,000 PIN codes. Asked whether Gati will remain a publicly traded entity post-integration, he answered in the affirmative. The Gati acquisition is in line with Allcargo”s long-term strategy of strengthening the domestic business and helps it become an end-to-end logistics solutions provider.
HMM Algeciras current titleholder in largest container ship ranking calls on Rotterdam ROTTERDAM: The HMM Algeciras entered Rotterdam’s Amaliahaven on its maiden voyage to transfer containers at the terminal of RWG (Rotterdam World Gateway). Algeciras is the most recent vessel to rank as the world’s largest container ship. At maximum capacity, the ship carries slightly more 20-foot containers than its predecessor MSC Gülsün: 23,964 TEU versus 23,756 TEU. During its maiden voyage, HMM Algeciras is carrying a total of 19,621 TEU on board – itself a record number. The Korean vessel was completed at Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering’s Okpo shipyard on 24 April. It is some 400 metres long and 61 metres wide. For further information about Algeciras. This makes port of Rotterdam well positioned for upscaling in container shipping,” said, Allard Castelein, CEO, Rotterdam Port Authority. HMM is the new name for Hyundai Merchant Marine. This South Korean ship-owner is the ninth-largest container shipping line worldwide. The company has ordered another eleven 24,000-TEU vessels in this class. Bae Jae-hoon, President and CEO of HMM: “HMM greeted two historical events in last April. One was the completion of our rebranding process with adopting our official corporate name “HMM”. The other was to take delivery of HMM Algeciras, the world’s largest 24K-class containerships. The debut of HMM Algeciras in Europe and its maiden call at the port of Rotterdam has enormous symbolic significance. I believe 24K-class vessels will ser ve as a bridge to ensure a mutual partnership”.
New waterways linking NE India, B”desh to start in 3 months AGARTALA: New waterways between Tripura and Bangladesh would start within three months and it would boost trade and numerous economic activities, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said. Deb said that a temporary jetty would be built at Sonamura in western Tripura within three months before starting the new waterways through Gomati river between Tripura and Bangladesh. “After operating the small vessels to carry various goods during the monsoon season, dredging for operating big vessels and ships would start in the Gomati river during the winter season,” Deb told the media during his day-long visit to the bordering sub-division Sonamura. An official of Tripura”s Transport Department said that to
operate vessels smoothly between Tripura and Bangladesh, 18 km waterways (15 km in Bangladesh territories and 3 km in Tripura territories) in the Gomati river would require dredging. The Gomati river, one of the eight rivers of Tripura flows to Bangladesh, linked with Meghna, one of the major rivers in the neighbouring country. The Chief Minister”s announcement came a week after India and Bangladesh have added five more “ports of call” on either side and increased the protocol (water) routes from 8 to 10. The Second Addendum to the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade was signed in Dhaka on May 20 by Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das and Bangladesh Shipping Ministry Secretary Mohammed Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust continued uninterrupted operations during lockdown V I S A K H A PAT N A M : Staying in tune with the Shipping Ministry’s decision to keep the major ports in the country running for clearing cargo by declaring it an essential service amid lockdown, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) is continuously making its loading and unloading operations of dry bulk cargo. VPT has taken up uninterrupted port operations, observing precautionary measures to contain coronavirus pandemic and also to minimise the pollution levels due to cargo handling at port. In order to minimise dust, VPT has initiated mechanisation of coal handling through BOT/PPP operators. Under this, port has mechanised coal-handling systems at three terminals operated by Vizag seaports Ltd., Vedanta and Adani at an investment of about Rs 205 crore,
Rs 650 crore and Rs 330 crore respectively. The VPT is proposing to install mechanical dust suppression system (MDSS) at dusty cargo areas at a cost of Rs 7.73 crore. The existing MDS system sprinkles water over the coal stacks at stack yards so that the Coal stacks are wet and the dust does not emit. Further, VPT has taken up MDSS at other coal stack yards at a cost of about Rs 10 crore which is targeted to be completed by the end of July 2021. In order to reduce fugitive dust, agents are covering the coal stacks with tarpaulins. Most of the green cover was damaged due to severe cyclonic storm Hudhud in 2014. To compensate the lost greenery, 5.65 lakh plants allotted to VPT under Green Visakha by the District Administration.
VPT has already planted about 4.62 lakh of plants and about 1.02 lakh plantation will be taken up at a cost of Rs 384 crore during 2020-21. Similarly, at Gnanapuram station, PM 10 is 67.99 ug/m3 in April, 2020 compared to 75.83 ug/m3 registered last year. It can be seen that in spite of continuous port operations in April -2020 (lockdown period), the air quality values are very well below the standards and during April2019, the values are little high. In addition, VPT is proposing to construct covered storage sheds to avoid dust emissions from the stacks as a part of continual improvement in environment aspects. Anti-dumping duty begins Indian ceramics in UAE, Morbi industry impacted NEW DELHI: While most industrial sectors slowly returning back to normalcy, Morbi’s ceramic units are bracing up for some tough times. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued notification imposing anti-dumping duty of Indian ceramic products which comes into force from Saturday. The Dubai customs has also issued similar notification and other gulf countries are expected to follow the suit. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in it’s order dated April 20 had imposed anti-dumping duty ranging from 40% to
106% on Indian ceramic products. The GCC is a political and economic union of all Arab countries except Iraq and represents countries like Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. The anti-dumping duty has been imposed for five years which will make it impossible for Morbi exporters to do business with gulf countries. Like many other sectors, Morbi’s ceramic industry is also under financial crisis because of the global lockdown on account of cornovirus pandemic.
Nilesh Jetparia, President of Morbi Ceramic Association said, “There has been not production since last two and half months as there is no demand in domestic as well as international market. The major markets are closed. Now, we are looking at the Government to provide us some relief so we can complete in international market.” Currently, only 280 out of the 900-odd units have started production in Morbi, the biggest ceramic cluster of India. With 35-40% of exports to Gulf countries.
China’s May exports slip back into contraction, imports worst in four years BEIJING: China's exports contracted in May as global coronavirus lockdowns continued to devastate demand, while a sharper-than-expected fall in imports pointed to mounting pressure on manufacturers as global growth stalls. The sombre trade readings for the world's second-biggest economy could pile
pressure on policymakers to roll out more support for a sector that is critical to the livelihoods of more than 180 million workers. Total trade accounts for about a third of the economy. Overseas shipments in May fell 3.3% from a year earlier, after a surprising 3.5% gain in April, customs data
showed recently. That compared with a 7% drop forecast in a Reuters poll. While exports fared slightly better than expected, imports tumbled 16.7% compared with a year earlier, worsening from a 14.2% decline the previous month and marking the sharpest decline since January 2016.
Export Credit Guarantee Corporation to clear all pending claims of exporters in 4 months NEW DELHI: The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) said it will clear all pending claims of apparel exporters in the next four months, even as it faces an exposure of Rs 100 crore in UK’s Laura Ashley and USA’s J.C. Penney, two large retail store chains that have gone bankrupt. “We are working under pandemicrelated restrictions. But we are trying our best and we plan to clear all pending claims in four months’ time,” M. Senthilnathan, CMD, ECGC, said in a webinar organised by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) on ‘Managing Trade Credit under the
Covid-19 Pandemic Situation’. Responding to AEPC Chairman A. Sakthivel’s query on claims, Senthilnathan said that the exporters should share all their documents and correspondences with their international buyers in one go for quick processing. If the transaction size warrants, the ECGC may have to engage in a legal pursuit of payment, he added. Senthilnathan said that the insolvency rates are high in developed economies and is going to shoot up sharply due to the pandemic’s impact on GDP growth, which is negative for most of the developed world, and has hurt medium and small
enterprises in particular and also some large enterprises. “Already, we have got two large retail stores going for bankruptcy and where our exposure is close to the tune of Rs 100 crore. Claims are yet to be filed by the exporters but we have got information that the buyers have gone insolvent,” he said. Right now all the buyers and most part of the world is affected due to Covid containment measures, he said, adding that the ECGC recognises that the situation calls for some credit accommodation and credit insurers need to take higher risks.

NYK Containership receives Japan Pilots’ Best Quality Ship Award TOKYO: The containership NYK Diana has been recognized with the Best Quality Ship Award for 2019 by the Japan Federation of Pilots’ Associations (JFPA). The Best Quality Ship Award was founded in fiscal 2003 with the aim of enhancing awareness of not only safe vessel operations but also the need for environmental conservation within our
ports and oceans. Comprehensive evaluations by pilots were done for vessels that requested pilot operations at pilotage districts throughout Japan during the months of September and October 2019, and seven vessels were recognized for their excellent operations. The ships were evaluated for their sure implementation of safety measures,
sufficient training of bridge crew in Bridge Resource Management** directive and command systems on board the vessel, crew awareness for safe operations, and systems in place for easing cooperation with pilots. The NYK Group will continue its efforts to ensure safe operations, positioning safety as our most important task.
Construction of automated gate complex commences at APM Terminals Aarhus A P M Te r m i n a l s Aarhus has commenced the constr uction of phase 1 of its automated gate complex. This US$3 million investment will further improve terminal efficiency using advanced technologies. Once completed the complex will offer two lanes in, two lanes out, a bi-directional lane for OOG and Mover traffic, and a parking area inside the OUT-lanes. The gate complex will be relocated to a new area along with a new marshal area planned by the Port of Aarhus to avoid trucks queueing on the main road. The
Marshall area will include three selfservice kiosks. A new Pre-OUT-gate area will be able to accommodate up to 19 trucks up to 16.5m as well as 125m long, extra-wide (5.5m) parking for extra-long vehicles, OOG and Movers, divided over two stretches. Space for a third gate lane in each direction has been reserved for future expansion. Completion of phase 1 is planned for the third quarter of 2020, at which point gate checks will still be carried out by gate personnel. Following the launch of phase 1, automation of the gates, including Optical Camera Recognition (OCR), license plate recognition cameras and
CCTV cameras for exception handling by gate clerks, will be tested by both engineers and test truck drivers. The ter minal also has plans to implement a digital Truck Appointment System. This will provide truck drivers with a guaranteed time slot and improve efficiency. All systems will be linked to the terminals new N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS). The automated Gate Operating System is scheduled to be operational by the end of next year. During construction, traffic to and from the terminal will have limited impact. A temporary pedestrian route has been established between the marshal area and the helpdesk.
MSC Sixin, World’s second Largest Container Ship at the Port of Barcelona BARCELONA: The Port of Barcelona received the first port call of the MSC Sixin, the second largest container ship in the world, which performed a loading and unloading operation at the Hutchison Ports BEST terminal. The MSC Sixin, owned by Mediter ranean Shipping Company (MSC), is part of the class known as “MSC Gülsün” – named after the first ship of this type – and its 23,756 TEU capacity, 400-metre length and 61-metre width make it the second largest container ship in the world today. At present only one other ship at sea, the HMM Algeciras, has a greater capacity. To mark the first call by MSC Sixin, M e r c è C o n e s a , Pr e s i d e n t o f t h e Po r t o f B a r c e l o n a , p r e s e n t e d a commemorative plaque to the ship’s captain, Anil Kumar Menon. The event was also attended by Salvador Richart, Branch Manager of MSC; and Guiller mo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST. During the welcome ceremony, the Port President thanked MSC for its “commitment to Barcelona, especially during these months in which there is a very significant decline in international
maritime traffic and, consequently, cancelled calls and concentrations of maritime services”. In the same vein, she added that “the arrival of these large MSC Gülsün class ships, which ply the Jade maritime service between Europe and Asia, further consolidates the Port of Barcelona as a distribution hub for the flows of goods between both continents”. Ms Conesa then explained that “thanks to our infrastructures, technology and services, the Port of Barcelona and its logistics community are prepared to respond to the challenge posed by the arrival of ships of this size”. The President added that, in these globally uncertain times for health and the economy caused by COVID-19 “we must be attentive to the changes taking place in trade and transport flows around the world and we need all the actors involved – shippers, ports and shipping companies – to work together to meet the needs of the companies we serve”. Finally, the Port President recalled that “the design of ships such as the MSC Sixin represent a significant reduction in the emissions from each container transported compared to those of ships in
service so far, and is therefore aligned with the environmental objectives of the Port of Barcelona”. The MSC Sixin was launched in 2019 and incorporates the latest technologies currently used in maritime transport. It allows telematic connection of so-called “smart containers”, has more than 2,000 connections for reefers and has been designed following strict environmental criteria, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 for each container transported with respect to the average of the container ships currently in service. The goods that the MSC Sixin unloaded in Barcelona include alcoholbased hand sanitizers, latex gloves and medical equipment designed to combat the COVID-19 crisis.

One of the most unique aspects is the benefit of full visibility and control over all shipping and transport modes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Despite accelerating digitalization and super-fast connectivity customers have a need for reduced complexity. And that is exactly what our tool does,” says Tim Scharwath, CEO DHL Global Forwarding, Freight. “We have created a one-stop customer portal that is tailored to the needs of our customers. By combining services like online quotation and booking with shipment tracking, document accessibility, and data analyses we are creating not only 360-degrees visibility, but also have laid the foundation for customers to manage their logistics – anytime and anywhere. We strongly believe that digitalization bears the potential to ease and improve the daily business of shippers and freight forwarders simultaneously. This is even truer during unpredictable and challenging times such as those we are currently facing with COVID-19, and which might now act as an accelerator for digitizing the industry. That is what digitalization means to us and why we made it a cornerstone of our strategy 2025.” The platform merges existing online services like myDHLi Quote + Book and myDHLi Analytics with new services and features, and incorporates them into one innovative platform. Services like a very efficient search capability enhance the user experience. On top, developed completely in-house, the new tracking service uses end-to-end information to make shipments across air and ocean visible nearly in real-time. This gives users complete control — from pick-up to final delivery. The service also offers raw data Excel extracts. Another new feature is myDHLi Documents, which offers quick and easy access to downloadable shipment documents. All documents — quotes, commercial invoice, packing list, house bill, invoice, proof of delivery, etc. — are stored in one place. The designers
adapted a mobile-first approach for seamless use on all devices. Built-in popular social media features like follow and share functions simplify communication along the supply chain by enabling customers to exchange information with colleagues, customers and suppliers. Furthermore, data can be easily analyzed and exported or directly integrated to own systems, based on a suite of APIs. myDHLi features a modular build-up. Users can individualize their portal by selecting the specific services they want. Thanks to the single sign-on registration process, all services are available from the beginning. No additional registration or sign-in processes are needed. myDHLi is free of charge for all DHL Global Forwarding customers. The launch begins with a pilot phase including selected customers from five continents (North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa). myDHLi is being rolled out in waves to ensure a smooth region-by-region transition. Interested customers can register for onboarding to myDHLi. Regular updates based on customer feedback will be shared. The previous customer portal, DHLi, will be available until the myDHLi roll-out is complete.
APM Terminals Mobile gains another distribution center COPENHAGEN: BendPak, which manufactures and sells automotive lifts used in car dealerships and parking garages, has joined such major companies as Walmart, Amazon, Kia, Airbus, Bombardier and Mercedes Benz in selecting the port of Mobile and the state of Alabama as a hub for global logistics supply and distribution as well as manufacturing. Santa Paula, California-based BendPak has opened a new 100,000-square-foot distribution center in Theodore, Alabama which is 11 miles from the APM Terminals Mobile container terminal. The new administrative and shipping complex has easy access to three major interstates and five Class I railroads helping BendPak to deliver products same-day or next-day to more customers in the eastern half of the country. “Opening the Mobile distribution center represents our continued commitment to being the industry leader and best at serving our customers, and part of that commitment means reducing delivery times,” said Don Henthorn, BendPak President and Founder. “This new facility brings our products geographically closer to our customers and that makes a huge difference.” The new warehouse will stock all of BendPak’s popular products including its Ranger, QuickJack and Autostacker brands. A future training facility will include a classroom and fully appointed service bay to offer customers a convenient option for quality technical training on BendPak’s expanding product lines. “This new distribution center will enhance our ability to get our customers what they need, when they need it,” said Jeff Kritzer, BendPak’s Executive Vice President. “Today’s consumer expects immediate delivery and we’re focused on helping that become a reality. The definition of Mobile is agile and transportable. We couldn’t think of a more befitting name to call this beautiful city, our new home.” The new distribution center is strategically located in Mobile County, Alabama, allowing for easy access to I-65, I-10, I-165, and Highway 43. Located in the heart of one of America’s largest logistic
hotspots, the new fulfillment operation will offer next-day or two-day delivery to a large share of BendPak’s customer base on the eastern half of the US. BendPak’s California headquarters and distribution multiplex in Santa Paula, will continue offering shipping and order fulfilment services to approximately 15 western states. BendPak plans to continue its expansion efforts in order to improve geographic shipping advantages. APM Terminals Mobile handled 419,000 TEU in 2019 and recently expanded the Inland Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) for rail cargo as well as expanded the berth in 2020 to accommodate two or more ships at the same time. “We’re in the middle of the country, enabling companies to reach four major population centers in one day: the US Gulf, the U.S. East Coast, the U.S. Midwest and Canada, stated Brian Harold, Managing Director of APM Terminals Mobile, Alabama. “Supply chain flexibility, speed and lower costs create a more competitive edge. Supply chain leaders like our fast access to commercial US centers via multiple landside logistics options: five Class I railroads, trucking and 15,000 miles of inland waterway connections. These integrated offerings make supply chains flow easier, smarter and with less cost. We are constantly looking for new ways to improve supply chains and attract more business through our port.” Transit times between Asia and US inlands are comparable via Mobile routing for those customers looking to add to their gateway supply chain options. APM Terminals Mobile working in partnership with the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) opened in 2008. “The tremendous growth we have been experiencing here is the result of our strong partnership with the ASPA and Jimmy Lyons’ vision to grow the port as an economic engine,” observed Mr. Harold. The ASPA will be deepening the Mobile harbor to 50’ starting in 2021 to accommodate the largest vessels in the global fleet and ensure future logistics competitiveness for the port. The economic development teams within ASPA, regional, and state work together with exceptional speed to assist companies locating to the area.
