Nashik Grape exporters tastes sour due to Centre’s MEIS scrapping NASHIK: The grape exporters of Nashik have come under stress as they are finding it hard to compete with their counterparts from Peru, Chile and South Africa in selling their produce at competitive rates in European countries. There are over 100 grape exporters in Nashik, which is a major grape-growing hub in the country. The European market is one of the largest importers of grapes from India — a sizeable amount of which goes from Nashik. According to the grape exporters of Nashik, the Union government has withdrawn the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) from January 1 this year. This scheme entitled fresh fruit and vegetable exporters to get assistance of 5-7% on

free on board (FOB) value. FOB is the cost and risk involved in delivery of goods from buyer to seller. “This scheme benefitted the grape exporters here as it subsided the import duty of 8% imposed by the European Union on Indian grape exporters. Now that the MEIS has been scrapped, the Indian grape exporters have to bear the import duty,” said Bharati Pawar, BJP MP from Dindori taluka in Nashik district. A majority of the vineyards in Nashik are spread in talukas like Dindori, Niphad, etc that fall under Dindori Lok Sabha constituency. Pawar said that although the goverment has announced a new scheme — Remission of Duties or Taxes on Export Product (RoDTEP) — replacing MEIS, the percentage of

assistance that grape exporters will be getting has not been spelled out so far. “There is no import duty by EU on grape export from Peru, Chile and South Africa. We are unable to sell our produce at a competitive price,” said Vilas Shinde, chairman of Sahyadri Farm, one of the top grape exporters of India in Nashik. Grape exporters said the constant rise in fuel prices has increased the transportation cost. Pawar has written to the Union commerce and industry minister, Piyush Goyal, requesting him to look into the issue immediately. “I have requested Goyal to see to it if the ministry can sanction at least 7% assiatnce under RoDTEP for the country’s grape exporters,” she said.

Mills association seeks rollback of duty on cotton imports COIMBATORE : The Southern India Mills’ Association has sought a rollback of the 10% customs duty on cotton imports announced in the Union Budget, as it would escalate the cost of garments and result in higher import of garments, especially from countries such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Ashwin Chandran, Chairman of Southern India Mills’ Association, said that India imports mainly extra-long staple (ELS) cotton, organic cotton, contamination-free cotton and sustainable cotton.The production of

these varieties is either nil or meagre in India. Indian mills consume about 15 lakh bales of ELS cotton annually as against the domestic production of about five lakh bales, Mr. Chandran said. India is a major importer of Pima and Giza cotton varieties. The country imports about 33% of total Pima exports from the U.S. and 45% of Giza cotton from Egypt. Several garment exporters in the MSME segment do not have capacities to make yarn from such premium cotton

varieties and buy yar n from the domestic mills. Such exporters will not get Advance Authorisation Scheme benefits that the integrated mills that import cotton can avail of. Thus, Indian products made of imported cotton will become expensive in the international market, which will give competitors an edge. In the case of the domestic market, the cost of garments made of imported cotton will increase, leading to higher import of garments, he said.

Maersk announces the appointment of Vikash Agarwal as the new Managing Director for South Asia Vikash Agarwal to join Maersk South Asia on 1st of March MUMBAI: Maersk has appointed Mr. Vikash Agarwal as its new Managing Director, Maersk South Asia and he will join the organisation on 1st March 2021. Vikash Agarwal is a highly accomplished business leader and has had a successful track record of leading country-level operations with wide-ranging regional roles in the logistics industry. In a career spanning more than two decades, he has held responsibilities for managing finance, business advisory, procurement, and general management, leading large teams in the Asia Pacific region, Middle East and Africa, including holding operational responsibility for the Indian subcontinent and Malaysia. A chartered accountant by qualification, Vikash's recent employment was with CEVA Logistics - Indian subcontinent as their Managing Director since 2014. "I am delighted to welcome Vikash to Maersk West & Central Asia. His experience will be of great benefit to our Regional Leadership Team. HAROPA ended the year with maritime traffic and riverbased activity standing at 108 million tonnes, a fallback of 6%. The rebound that began this summer was confirmed throughout the second half of the year. At the meeting of the French interministerial maritime committee (CIMer) on 22 January, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his confidence in the future unified entity, HAROPA, specifically by announcing an investment for our development of 1.45bn over the period 2021-2027. In addition, under France’s Economic Stimulus Plan, which includes an envelope of

175m dedicated to port greening, HAROPA has been allocated 71m, making it possible to speed up numerous projects, particularly in the area of the energy transition. “ W e s a w a satisfactory level of a c t i v i t y f o r r i v e rbased transport in 2020 despite the public health crisis. Such results were made possible by the robustness of the Seine Valley’s economic engine, and especially the dynamism of the construction industry and the continuation of major projects involving waterway transport, such as the excavation work for the Grand Paris Express and the building of the Olympic Village. Leading Global & Domestic companies to set up Freight Terminals along DFCs NEW DELHI: Top global and domestic firms are keen to develop and operate Multimodal Logistics Parks, Freight Terminals and parcel terminals along India’s dedicated rail freight corridor network. Among them are Adani Logistics, CONCOR, DP World, CMA CGM, JM Baxi, PSA International, APM Terminals, TVS Logistics and Gateway Rail Freight. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) is looking at companies that can own and operate private freight terminals (PFTs) near stations to garner more cargo to its network. The plan is to permit private firms develop and manage these terminals on their own land located near DFC railway stations, which will be linked by rail, sources said.

DFCCIL also has its own land parcels near the track which it plans to later develop. The private developer who wins the right to operate a terminal on its own or leased land will book cargo for all customers who want to load and unload cargo from that station for a 30-year period. For the first 10 years of the contract, the operator will have the exclusive right to handle goods from the station, after which other users can be allowed to manage goods, too. The PFT operator will collect from its users a mix of handling charges as decided by the Indian Railways and for various value-added services. The rights to operate the terminal and provide exclusive, rail-linked access to each DFC station will be

awarded to companies who own large and contiguous land parcels, and meet the turnover criteria set by DFCCIL. In case there are multiple players vying for the 10-year exclusive rights to a station, the player with largest average turnover will get the right to run the terminal. The DFCCIL has decided against opting for a revenue share model or other such parameters to develop PFTs to attract maximum cargo on the DFC network. This also fits with India’s core strategy of lowering logistics costs. Companies eyeing PFTs, though, have concerns on the duration and extent of exclusivity that will be maintained, as there could be other goods-booking facilities — such as those connected to a nearby track of Indian Railways — in the vicinity, an industry official said.

CONCOR creates North – South Auto Logistics Corridor in India NEW DELHI: CONCOR achieves another milestone. Various models of Maruti such as Alto, Ciaz, Ertiga, Ignis, Celerio, Vitara Brezza, Swift DZire, Wagon R, XL-6 etc were carried which would be distributed all over South Tamilnadu and Kerala said Mr G.R. Seshagiri Rao, Chief General Manager, CONCOR, Chennai. CONCOR & Maruti Udyog had entered into a strategic long term agreement for transportation of Cars

from Maruti’s Gurgaon Plant. CONCOR had upgraded it’s Private Freight Terminal at Coimbatore and provided Stock yard cum Distribution facilities to Maruti which would entail tremendous costs savings and inventory management. C O N C O R i s exploring and is in discussions with automobile manufacturers in Chennai and Bengaluru and offered them similar service to Northern States in India Mr Rao said in a press release. Officials of CONCOR, Railways and Maruti Udyog were present on the

occasion wherein Maruti Udyog had expressed happiness about logistics support given by CONCOR and stated that it would open a new chapter in the Automobile Transportation sector in India and expressed hope that CONCOR would consider to Open other Sectors as well.

Northeast to benet from 4000 km of Inland Waterways: Mansukh Mandaviya NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Water ways Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday, 7th Febr uar y 2021 said that the Central Government is developing 4,000 kilometres of inland waterways for motor transportation to ensure smooth transportation in Northeast India. “The government of India is developing a total of 4000 km of inland waterways for motor transportation so that there can be smooth transportation and Northeast India including Tripura will largely be benefited out of it including the far mers producing organic produce,” he said.

Mandaviya said that the government has decided that medicines should have their generic name on the medicine strips. “Instead of having the medicines having the brand name on its strips, it should have its generic name in large font”, he said. The Union Minister said that the floating jetty over river Gomati at Sonamur in Tripura shall have a permanent terminal within this year and fund allocation has already been made in the budget. He further added that through the inland waterways, Sonamura (by the river Gomati) will be connected to river

Yamuna in Bangladesh and from there through the Haldia port (West Bengal) up to Banaras which is at a distance of 1400 km from there. The 90 km long waterways protocol route connecting Sonamura in India and Daudkandi in Bangladesh was included in the list of Indo-Bangla protocol (IBP) routes in May last year became operational on September 5 last year when Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb received the first vessel at Sonamura port. The Union Minister also informed that India and Bangladesh are jointly developing the protocol route and at an expenditure ratio of 80:20 respectively.

1st India-EU High Level Dialogue on Trade and Investment held NEW DELHI: The 1st High Level Dialogue (HLD), co-chaired by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal and the European Union Executive Vice-President & Tr a d e C o m m i s s i o n e r M r. Va l d i s Dombrovskis, was held on 5th February 2021. Commitment to the establishment of this Dialogue was a major outcome of the 15th India-EU Leader’s Summit held in July 2020, with an objective for a Ministerial level guidance towards the bilateral trade and investment relations.

During the discussions, in the HLD, the Ministers emphasized the importance of global cooperation and solidarity in a post COVID-19 era and agreed for further deepening of bilateral trade and investment relationship through a series of regular engagements, aiming at quick deliverable for the businesses in these tough times. The Ministers also agreed to meet within the next three months, with an objective for reaching consensus on a host of bilateral trade & investment cooperation issues viz. a bilateral

Regulatory Dialogue; an India-EU Multilateral Dialogue to explore further possibilities of cooperation; etc. In a significant step forward, regular interactions for re-initiation of bilateral trade and investment agreements, with an interim agreement, to start with, were also discussed. The Ministers concluded with the confidence and commitment towards a renewed India-EU commercial and economic partnership reflecting full potential of bilateral commercial relations.

Operational visibility and automation central to maritime logistics of the future, says Huseni Vohra of Ocean Insights ROSTOCK: While we can say with relative certainty that we are at the tail e n d o f t h e C O V I D - 1 9 pandemic—courtesy of the vaccines—the consequences of the pandemic are yet to be lived through. As with several industries, the COVID-19 impact on the supply chain industry has been total. The pandemic wreaked havoc on every segment of the value chain, forcing uncertainties within freight demand and capacity availability. The maritime ecosystem suffered as oscillating freight volumes and grounded container lines crippled stakeholders financially, even as they lay burdened with added pandemicbased expenses over worker health and safety. However, as the pandemic’s first wave subsided and economies reopened for business, pent-up demand came rushing back, peaking at the yearend holiday season. The sustained increase in container demand on trans-Pacific and AsiaEurope lanes saw freight rates more than double their usual levels. As car riers str uggled to get empty containers back to Asia, cargo rollovers continued to increase globally across all major transshipment ports. The shipping world went on to the next level of dynamism during the last quarter of 2020. In India, several containers transhipped via Mundra & Krishnapatnum ports rolled over to the second or the third vessel. On an average, in the South Asia market, the rollover ratios tend to increase by the second half of the year. However, the steep rise in demand after the lockdown effect needs to be factored in as well. A n e a r l i e r- t h a n - a n t i c i p a t e d recovery saw Chinese manufacturing back on track in the second half of 2020, posting a 54.9 on its Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) in November — numbers never seen in a decade in

China. With several vaccines in various stages of development and production, manufacturing centers across other countries that currently suffer from the pandemic will reopen in the first half of 2021, streamlining global container trade and stabilizing ocean freight rates. That said, the impact of COVID-19 would inevitably strengthen several technological trends within the maritime ecosystem, like automation. Port automation trends are accelerating, buoyed by bottlenecks faced during the peak-pandemic season due to lack of adequate workforce. Aside from reducing the overarching labor dependence, automation helps lower overall operational inefficiencies and increase safety and terminal productivity. The need for data-based insights is not lost on the industry, as maritime stakeholders increasingly recognize the ‘technology edge’ that data analytics brings to logistics operations. Segments like data intelligence and cloud-based technology that have mushroomed over the last few years will continue to gain relevance within the industry. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is now ubiquitously used across supply chains, as they provide stakeholders real-time visibility into freight movement and its immediate environment. Operational visibility has been elusive within supply chains, primarily due to companies working in complete siloes and skeptical of sharing data amongst other stakeholders in the value chain. The interest in data intelligence has fostered supply chain connectivity, with several consortiums created within maritime networks — notably bound by blockchain technology. Blockchain consortiums like the Maersk-IBM venture TradeLens put

interoperational visibility under greater focus. TradeLens meshes together a network of cargo owners, container lines, freight forwarders, ports, and other associated stakeholders, creating an ecosystem that builds trust implicitly through a decentralized ledger system. As large swathes of the transportation corridor stayed idle in early 2020, the world could concretely envision the positive impact consistently low carbon emissions can have on the environment. With the U.S. witnessing a change in administration this Januar y, the transportation industry would likely feel the push to keep their carbon footprint low. Sustainability within logistics is expected to be taken up on a larger scale, with digitalization and automation being prime movers of such operations. Ports and terminals are some of the largest nucleated sources of carbon emission within the logistics ecosystem. The situation is worsened as major ports often find themselves close to densely populated cities, strengthening their need to oversee ‘greener’ operations next year. This could be done by general electrification of terminal cargo handling equipment like cranes and forklifts. Overall, 2021 would define how global economies break free from the pandemic’s shackles. As the proverbial ‘mid-mile’ of supply chains, the maritime industry will have to rise to the occasion. In many ways, the pandemic served as a wake-up call to maritime logistics, hastening the adoption of technology in an industry mired in archaic operations. Visibility would be a defining theme, with stakeholders across the value chain leading concerted efforts to effect change and eliminate opacity-related inefficiencies. DP World reports 7.6% Gross Volume growth in Q4 2020 DUBAI: DP World Limited handled 19.1 million TEU (twentyfoot equivalent units) across its global portfolio of container terminals in 4Q2020, with gross container volumes increasing by 7.6% year-on-year on a reported basis and up 6.5% on a like-forlike basis. On a FY2020 basis, DP World handled 71.2 million TEU, flat year-on-year and up 0.2% on a like-for-like basis. 4Q2020 Like-for-like gross volume growth was mainly driven by India, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Americas with a strong performance from Mundra (India) London Gateway (UK), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Antwerp Gateway (Belgium) and Sokhna (Egypt). In Americas, growth was driven by DP World Santos (Brazil) and Vancouver (Canada). Jebel Ali (UAE) handled 3.4 million TEU in 4Q2020, up 0.3% year-on-year. At a consolidated level, our terminals handled 11.2 million TEU during 4Q2020, increasing 10.1% on a reported basis and up 5.2% on a like-for-like basis. On a FY2020 consolidated basis, DP World handled 41.7 million TEU, up 4.6% on a reported basis and down 1.8% on a like-for-like basis. The reported FY2020 growth of 33.3% in Americas and Australia region is mainly due to the consolidation of Caucedo (Dominican Republic) and acquisition of Fraser Surrey Docks (Canada). Group Chairman and Chief Executive Ofcer Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem commented: We are delighted to report another set of positive volume figures for 4Q2020 with like-forlike growth accelerating to 6.5%. This strong end to the year resulted in flat growth in 2020 which compares favourably against an industry that is estimated to be down 2.1%. Overall,

this once again illustrates the resilience of the global container industry, and D P Wo r l d ’ s continued ability to outperform the market. The growth in volumes was encouragingly across all our regions with India being a key driver, while our flagship port of Jebel Ali (UAE) saw volumes stabilizing. We continue to invest selectively in projects that offer compelling value such as Dakar (Senegal) and Luanda (Angola). Our strategy to provide solutions to cargo owners has served us well, and our aim is to continue to build on this momentum. Looking ahead, while 2021 has started encouragingly, the outlook remains uncertain given the continued issues surrounding the pandemic, geopolitical uncertainty in some parts of the world and the ongoing trade war. Overall, the full year solid volume performance leaves us well placed to deliver a relatively stable financial performance in 2020. We remain focused on containing costs to protect profitability, managing growth capex to preserve cashflow and are confident of meeting our 2022 targets.

Bahri signs Multi-Ship deal for Alpha Ori SMARTShip RIYADH: Alpha Ori Technologies (AOT) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the ship management division of Saudi Arabian national carrier Bahri. The deal includes the installation of AOT’s patented SMARTShip™ digital platform across a substantial part of the Bahri fleet. AOT, the world’s leading provider of digital shipping solutions, will complete the deployment of SMARTShip on the Bahri vessels over the next three months. “Since its founding, Alpha Ori’s endeavour has been to upgrade the shipping industry’s digital roadmap by delivering secure and sustainable solutions, reducing pain points, and optimizing vessel performance and cost savings,” said Bala Sankaran, Co-CEO of AOT. “With SMARTShip, AOT has delivered on its promises to our customers and we are confident that Bahri will benefit from this partnership.” AOT was only formed in 2017 but has already installed SMARTShip on over 100 vessels. The platform provides a ‘live connect’ experience to ship machinery including navigation, cargo and engine control systems. With 3k to 5K data points flowing at 30 second intervals directly from control systems to AOT’s cloud, intelligent alerts, advanced analytics and insights in real time are provided by AIenabled applications. SMARTShip’s web and mobile interfaces also enable ship operators to meet safety and sustainability goals using various

easy-to-use applications such as customizable reporting, geo location-based alarm systems, charter party dashboards, remote monitoring and diagnostics. AOT’s contract with Bahri was finalized after the successful completion of a three-month trial of SMARTShip on one of Bahri’s Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC). Captain Rajesh Unni, Co-CEO of AOT and CEO and Founder of leading Singapore-based ship manager Synergy Group, commented:“SMARTShip uses machine learning algorithms to bring the power of AI to vessel management. NYK to build two New LPG Dual-Fueled VLGCs Further Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

TOKYO: The NYK is delighted to announce the order of its first two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fueled very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI; president: Yasuhiko Hashimoto; headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo). Both ships will be built at the KHI Sakaide Works shipyard and are set for delivery in 2022. When LPG is used as fuel, exhaust gas from the ordered VLGCs will contain at least 85% less sulfur oxide (SOx) and 15% less carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to conventional VLGCs equipped with fuel-oil engines. These new VLGCs will comply not only with the SOx Global Cap regulations that were tightened from January 2020 but also with the EEDI phase 3 requirements. In addition, by equipping the ships with LPG tanks on deck, it will be possible to load LPG for fuel separately from the LPG cargo. Having the LPG tanks on deck extends the cruising range of the vessel when LPG fuel is used even though the size of the vessel remains the same.

In the future, by promoting the development of an ecofriendly fleet, NYK will provide customers with a low-carbon transportation mode and contribute to the reduction of environmental loads and the realization of a sustainable global society.
