JNPT records 28.45% growth in Container traffic; handled 453,105 TEUs in August 2021
N A V I M U M B A I : Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of the premier container handling ports, witnessed an upswing in cargo Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS handling and recorded a throughput of 453,105 TEUs in August 2021, a growth of 28.45% as compared to 352,735 TEUs in the same month last year. JNPT records 28.45% growth in Container traffic; handled 453,105 TEUs in August 2021 Cont’d. from Pg. 3 The container traffic handled at JNPT during the first five months of FY 2021-22 was 2,250,943 TEUs as against 1,544,900 TEUs, which is 45.70% higher than the container traffic over the same period of last year. The total traffic handled at JNPT during the first five months of FY 2021-22 was 30.45 million tons as against 21.68 million tons, which is 40.42% higher. JN Port handled 79,583 TEUS of ICD traffic from 500 Rakes during August-2021 and the Rail-Coefficient in FY 2021-22 (Apr to Aug) was 18.27%. The efficiency and coordination of all stakeholders, including all Container Train Operators (both CONCOR and Private CTOs), Railways, and all Port Terminals, have contributed to the overall improved rail handling performance at JNPT. Commenting on the monthly performance, S h r i S a n j a y S e t h i , I A S , C h a i r m a n , J N P T, s a i d , “We have continued to consolidate our performance in August 2021, further optimising our overall upward growth trajectory. As part of our COVID response efforts, we provided high-priority port clearances for all COVID relief medical cargo and accessories. JNPT is endeavoring to grow from its pre-COVID
performance levels, and the data indicates that JNPT will continue to grow in the months ahead. By working together with all our stakeholders, we are confident and optimistic about sustaining our upward growth. Intending to encourage country’s trade, we ensure that the entire family of JNPT puts in efforts to constantly evolve our operational efficiency and the port’s capacity by maintaining the international standards.” During the month gone by, among a host of other initiatives, JNPT deployed nine e-vehicles and installed a dedicated charging station within the Port's operational area as part of its sustainability and green port initiative. Furthermore, the biogas-based electricity generation was powered at JNPT’s Solid Waste Management Plant, and a dedicated website was launched to optimize real-time air quality monitoring at JNPT. To enable seamless port connectivity, several infrastructure projects, including phase two of LHS-Lane ROB and the road behind the JNCH-PUB have been operationalized. The port will continue to play an instrumental role and contribute to the nation’s economy by discharging its duties as an integral part of its supply chain.
Mumbai Port Trust Celebrates Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav MUMBAI: To commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence (Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav), a slew of programmes have been lined up by MbPT over the year. In August 2021, MbPT organised Rangoli, Drawing Competition and Slogan Competition with patriotism as the theme. All these programmes were organised in Port Trust residential colony “Nadkarni Park” and at respective departments drawing enthusiastic participation from the employees and their family members. Further, in the month of September 2021, programes on Yoga, Nutrition and exercise, self defence techniques and competition for creative writing along with Hindi Divas/pakhwada are being organised. The Port will launch save water campaign, along with Swachhata Pakhwada events and also webinar sessions for discussion on green and safer port.
Deendayal Port welcomes Maiden voyage of M.V. E-SHIP 1 GANDHIDHAM: The M.V. E-SHIP 1 was recently given priority berthing at CJ-15A for loading 15 Windmill blades of 78.5 Meters, which was on a Maiden voyage at DPT and was one of the unique ships to have berthed in recent times. This vessel uses wind power to generate electricity while in the sea for running the generators on-board. Use of fossil fuel is limited for her stay in the harbour. The Agents and Stevedores were Malara Shipping Pvt. Ltd. The Loading was
from Deendayal Port to Vietnam Port. “In fact before 2 months we loaded first time 78.5 mtrs cargo of Wind blades from Deendayal - kandla on mv ROLLDOCK SKY. The entire operation was carried out under special trained team for wind energy of Malara Ship, informed the company MD Aashish Joshi.
COSCO SHIPPING Practices the Concept of “Green Container Manufacturing” to Promote “Peak Emissions” and “Carbon Neutrality” BEIJING: To respond to the national strategy of “peak emissions” and “carbon neutrality,” improve the resource utilization ratio, improve the ecosystem and protect the environment, Shanghai Huanyu Container Factory, a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Development, and the container factories under its trust management, are actively practicing the concept of “green container manufacturing,” upgrading production equipment and using clean energy to achieve energy conservation, emissions reduction and noise reduction and the healthy development of the enterprise. Optimizing and upgrading energy equipment to realize energy saving, emissions reduction and harmonious development In order to minimize carbon emissions and noise pollution, the container manufacturers under Shanghai Huanyu Container Factory and those under its entrusted management have introduced advanced equipment according to their actual needs, and increased their investment in energy saving and emissions reduction. Qidong Container Factory has put into use its newly introduced pure electric fork trucks, as an important attempt to achieve energy conservation, emissions reduction, and quality and efficiency improvement. Based on the actual result of such measure, it will continue to increase the proportion of pure electric production vehicles in use in the plant. Guangzhou Container Factory has introduced exhaust gas pre-treatment equipment, which helps effectively control the exhaust gas emissions to ensure that the organic exhaust gas emissions data will be far below the standard set out in environmental protection regulations. At the same time, the safety performance has been effectively enhanced, with the gas and electricity energy consumption being significantly reduced. The factory has also introduced a dust spray tower to better capture the residual dust treated by the filter cartridge, which can eliminate the hazard of environmental pollution caused by dust leakage and effectively reduce the minimum exhaust
gas emission concentration. J i n z h o u Container Factor y has introduced a new XP-B power saving control device, which adopts intelligent flexible balancing technology that can largely reduce the current supplied by the grid as well as the motor’s own power loss, with obvious energy-saving and efficiency improvements. Improve the proportion of clean energy to enable low-carbon intelligent efcient and safe production Qidong Container Factory has built a photovoltaic power plant, which adopts advanced and applicable technologies to establish a “clean,” “intelligent” and “friendly” smart microgrid platform under the coordinated control of light and load. It realizes the safe unattended operation and convenient operation and maintenance, and can promote the construction and utilization of clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system. Furthermore, the wind power station’s generating units under planning and construction will make full use of the advantages of wind energy and reduce the proportion of thermal power generation and use. It will bring significant ecological and economic benefits to the green development of business after completion. COSCO SHIPPING will continue to improve energy efficiency and the proportion of clean energy use through technical and management means, continuously promote greener and more sustainable production methods, strive to reduce the carbon footprint of its container manufacturing business, fulfill its carbon emission reduction responsibilities, and contribute to the realization of the strategic goals of “peak emissions” and “carbon neutrality.”

UP exports goods worth Rs. 21,500 crore in April-May, records jump of 152% (YoY) LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh is fast emerging as an export hub of India. According to data released by the central government, Uttar Pradesh exported goods worth Rs. 21,500.85 crore in April and May this year, up 152.67 per cent compared to corresponding period previous year. Last year, goods worth Rs. 8,511.34 crore were exported between April and May, 2020. The major exports from Uttar Pradesh include leather, textile and glassware products. These products were exported to different parts of the world even during the ongoing coronavirus disease (Covid19) pandemic, giving a major push to the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Buoyed by the response Uttar Pradesh’s products are receiving from countries across the world, the state
government has decided to set up overseas trade promotion and facilitation centres in all the 75 districts. The MSME department also plans to set up a centralised facilitation centre for better coordination among various hubs. The Adityanath government has claimed that these centres will increase the worth of exports by at least Rs. 400 crore and provide employment opportunities to 4,000 people. Uttar Pradesh is the sixth major exporting states of the country, after Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra P radesh and Kar nataka, according to Centre’s data. This year, a lot of goods like carpets, rugs, textile fabric, oven fabric, man made staple fabric, footwear, glassware, iron, steel, aluminum, rice, sugar, milk, flour, plastic products, silk, artificial
flowers have been exported to different parts of the world. Nepal, Bangladesh and countries of Southeast Asia imported a large number of products from UP during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to state government, footwear and toys exports shot up from Rs. 147.04 crore and Rs. 26.19 crore in April-May last year to Rs. 742.47 crore and Rs. 120.83 crore respectively this year. Similarly, glassware exports increased from Rs. 39.99 crore during the same period last year to Rs. 310.77 crore this year. Furthermore, carpets and textile fabrics worth Rs. 744.15 crore were exported this year as against Rs. 247.63 crore last year. The export of leather products also saw massive increase from Rs. 79.21 crore last year to Rs. 493.80 crore this year.
Cargo traffic at Major Ports rises by 11.43 % in August : IPA NEW DELHI: Cargo traffic at the country’s major ports rose by 11.43 per cent to 57.59 million tons in August over the year-ago period, according to an industry body. The country’s 12 major ports had handled 51.68 million tons of cargo in August last fiscal, Indian Ports Association (IPA) said in a statement. India has 12 major ports under the control of the central government — Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore,
Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier E n n o r e ) , V O C h i d a m b a r n a r, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia). M o r m u g a o Po r t r e g i s t e r e d t h e maximum cargo growth of 60.47 per cent followed by Kamarajar Port (53.73 per cent), JNPT (27.03 per cent) and Cochin Port (21.84 per cent). Mumbai Port logged 16.86 per cent growth while Paradip Port reported 14.34 per cent growth in cargo traffic during the
month under review. Besides, Chennai Port and Deendayal ports saw 8.18 per cent and 13.96 per cent growth, respectively, it said. Cargo traffic at V O Chidambaranar Port grew 4.99 per cent in August 2021, the IPA said. Visakhapatnam port, on the other hand, saw a 13.37 per cent decline in cargo traffic while SMP, Kolkata Port (including Haldia) reported 1.04 per cent fall and New Mangalore 0.15 per cent.

KOLKATA: Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Shantanu Thakur inaugurated / dedicated three projects to the nation at Netaji Subhas Dock of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port(SMP), Kolkatatoday. These include a new canteen building’ at a cost of over Rs 1 crore, roads including drain and footpath at Dhobitala and Brooklyn area at a cost of Rs.21.44 crore and alley roads at Kantapukur shed area and Hoboken shed area including drainage system at a cost of Rs.18.13 crore. The Minister said that the facility of a new modern canteen building will help improve staff wellbeing and productivity.

Commerce, Railway & Shipping Ministers may discuss on Container crisis Tomorrow : Sources NEW DELHI: The government plans to quickly address the shortage of containers with a package of contingency measures such as priority berthing for bulk carriers, extending the scheme to support agricultural exporters, and higher supply of rail wagons. The measures are expected to go into immediate effect early next week after the green signal is given by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who are expected to discuss the issue on September 9, multiple sources said. The acute shortage of standard 20-feet equivalent unit shipping containers, used to ship almost all merchandise goods, is part of the second wave of shipping container crisis, which began in late June. Since then, average charges for renting containers have risen by 3-5 times, a senior Commerce Department official said. Long and short term “After a meeting chaired by the Cabinet Secretary last week, a series of meetings had been taken by senior officials at the shipping and commerce Ministries. A number of short term-measures are being finalized. This includes extending the Transport and Marketing Assistance (TMA) for Specified Agriculture Products, so that crucial agricultural trade doesn’t stall,” he added. The TMA provides financial assistance to agri exporters for international freight and marketing of certain agricultural products, trans-shipment costs of which are high due to perishability. The scheme was valid until March 2021, but is likely to be extended by a year. The government will work with the Container Shipping Lines Association (CSLA), which represents the foreign shipping companies operating in India, to create guidelines for quick quarantining of incoming ships so that containers can be quickly used. Rather than directly loading up freight trains with containers, using more railway wagons and lowering haulage
charges is also planned to ease the logistic chain and address demand. Customs Departments at important ports like Nhava Sheva, Kochi and Haldia will also be given new guidelines that further reduce turnaround times at ports. Short-term solutions such as providing priority berthing to bulk carriers to reduce turnaround times and special drives to expedite clearance of unclaimed cargo and increase the availability of containers are also planned, another official said. However, many of these measures had been tried before as well. In April, the government had announced the first container crisis to be over, having met its target of repurposing existing containers and meeting the market demand. Long-term solutions such as ramping up container manufacturing are also in progress with manufacturing units to be set up in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Currently, no containers are manufactured in India, which requires an estimated 3.5 lakh containers every year. To reduce dependence on Chinese and Korean containers, 10 locations have been chosen by the Shipping Ministry for manufacturing. Stranded in China Similar to last year, a series of lockdowns in major eastern Chinese cities such as Shenzhen and Shanghai has aggravated the situation. China is the world’s largest buyer of merchandise goods as well as the largest exporter by volume. But the country is battling a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 infections in major cities along with a spate of order cancellations from struggling Southeast Asian economies. The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) had created an online marketplace for shipping containers this year. However, the system has been unable to deal with the national demand for containers. “Augmenting the flow of empty containers and establishing a regulatory authority to seek justification of freight hike and imposition of various charges by the shipping lines need urgent inter vention of the government,” FIEO President A Sakthivel, said.

Exporters worried about stuck payments as Sri Lanka declares economic emergency NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka’s economic emergency declared by the country’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa last week to control spiralling food prices and declining foreign reserves has exporters in India worried as the curbs placed by the island nation on imports and foreign currency may worsen payment problems they are already facing. While India’s exports and imports may be the first to be affected by the crisis in Sri Lanka, its investments in development projects and areas such as
petroleum retail, tourism & hotel, manufacturing, real estate, and financial services may also take a hit if the situation worsens, say experts. “From the last one year, we have seen Sri Lanka curbing imports of nonessentials such as vehicles, which has almost stopped. However, export of most essential items from India is continuing. But now the problem has got aggravated as a lot of Indian exporters who have already exported have not received their payments. They are worried about when the payment
would come,” said Ajay Sahai, Director General, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). Sri Lanka’s economic woes are partly due to the Covid-19 crisis which affected tourism which is one of the primary source of foreign currency earnings. Its mounting foreign debt crisis is seen by many economists as one of the main underlying reasons for the situation. A ban on use of fertilisers by Rajapaksa, who wants agriculture to turn totally organic, may have made matters worse.
CWC & FCI working on modern crop storage: Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and Food Corporation of India (FCI) are working on modern crop storage plans for the benefit of farmers, minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution Piyush Goyal said recently.
Cluster-based approach in agri produce marketing and exports will help bring cost of production down without affecting quality, the minister said. Rubber and niche products from different states have a huge potential, he said.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has changed its mindset to move from incremental changes to transformational changes, Goyal said. The works done in last seven years have laid a strong foundation to build a strong India of the future, he added.
Afghan crisis hits Surat textile exporters, Rs 4,000 crore stuck in pending dues NEW DELHI: Afghanistan is going through serious turmoil with the Taliban taking over. The Taliban had managed to capture the country at a lightning speed following the US decision to pull out from the country and Kabul was captured on August 15, more than two weeks before the US deadline to withdraw the last of its troops from the country. The upset is impacted Indian traders as well. As per an report, textile traders in S urat are wor ried over pending payments of about Rs 4,000 crore from Afghanistan which has got stuck with the Taliban taking control of the country.
Note that Afghanistan’s central bank has instructed commercial banks to not allow corporate bank account holders to withdraw money for any purpose or to carry out any electronic transaction inside or outside of Afghanistan. The Champalal Bothra, of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association was quoted as saying, “Earlier, we used to send garments and textiles through Dubai to Afghanistan. Lately, we were exporting to the nation through Bangladesh as we saw that it was cheaper to send through Bangladesh. Exports have stopped now, but we are not sure when we will get our
payments. Nearly Rs 4,000 crore is stuck.” “The Afghani currency has depreciated to 87 Afghan afghani against US dollar from 80 Afghan afghani in the last one week. While that augurs well for exporters, it pinches the importers,” Ajay Sahai, Director General, FIEO, told. Sahai further informed that businesses in Afghanistan have informed them that the central bank of the country has said that it will not provide enough dollars to the local banks which means that Afghan business houses will not be able to pay the exporters.
Bengaluru reports record Air Cargo volumes in August B E N G A LU R U : Ke m p e g o w d a International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR), handled record volumes of cargo in August on the back of international volume growth. The south Indian airport processed 37,319 metric tonnes of cargo during the month – the most it has handled in a single month since its opening in 2008. The airport said that international imports and exports were both growth
drivers, accounting for 24,304 metric tonnes – also the highest total. Exports for the month also reached record levels, hitting 15,224 metric tonnes. “Key factors that have led to this transformation include, a conducive geographic location with easy access to manufacturing hubs in South India, adequate airline capacities to service key sectors across the globe and world-class cargo infrastructure, operated by
Air India SATS and Menzies Aviation Bobba, Bangalore,” the airport said. “In addition to round the clock support from Indian Customs, Government of Karnataka helped in creating a robust business environment amid the pandemic. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Government of India also played a key role in helping BLR Airport achieve this milestone.”
