Maersk App sees record use amid COVID-19 COPENHAGEN: The demand is driven by customers relying on eCommerce to navigate in a business environment which has seen record numbers of employees working from home for safety reasons while performing day-to-day operations. Record demand for online business transactions has increased the Maersk shipments app usage by nearly 90% in 2020. “As the pandemic hit and more people began working from home, customers are seeing the convenience of going online to manage their logistics business using the Maersk mobile app,” said Carsten Frank Olsen, Head of eCommerce at Maersk. ”In the first five weeks of 2020, the app averaged 70,000 business transactions weekly. By midApril, it had grown to 130,000 business transactions weekly, reflecting an 86% increase in this online remote usage tool.” The surge of interest in the app usage reflects the container tracking, vessel schedule, live chat, instant rate quotes, booking of containers, cargo notifications, and Spot Rate activities that customers are relying on to run their business while away from the office. Customers can use

credit cards or a smart pay solution and have cargo released instantly. Three new eCommerce digital solutions were added in March that improve the customer experience for import functionality and replace manual processes: Maersk Delivery Order (MDO) enabling cargo release; the Demurrage and Detention Calculator that answers storage fees and offers online payment for immediate release of full containers at the port or storage yard; and last free day for a container in storage – which is a feature designed for US-based customers. These three key enablers redefine the import self-service customer experience through better decision-making, visibility and speed. Of interest, the new features were all designed and driven by customer feedback as Maersk seeks to cultivate a constant feedback loop from customers to shape the company’s product development pipeline. The www.Maersk.com website is one of the largest B2B websites in the world handling $20 billion in transactions in 2019. The Maersk shipment app is available in The App Store and in Google Play.

Ocean Network Express continues to expand Refrigerated Container fleet to meet growing demand of perishable cargo SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express (ONE) is expanding its current refrigerated container (reefer) fleet by adding another 5000 (40” HC) units, including 200 units equipped with advanced Controlled Atmosphere (CA) technology, to meet growing demand of refrigerated cargo around the world. ONE has one of the largest, state of the art reefer fleet in the world, equipped with the most advanced technologies designed to handle perishable cargo demand. With this new investment of 5000 reefer units, coming on the heels of last year’s procurement of 6,000 units, ONE demonstrates its strong commitment to meet growing demand for containerized reefer trade. In 2019, global refrigerated container volume grew by more than 7%, augmented by expansion of middle class in Asia constantly demanding healthy food choices. In 2020 too, despite challenges posed by coronavirus pandemic, the prospect of global refrigerated container trade remains strong specially for protein and fresh fruits segment and ONE expects the growth momentum to be maintained for remaining months of the year. ONE is currently working towards the application of latest IoT technology into its fleet

of reefer containers which allows real time visibility of critical information such as temperature, humidity inside the container, thereby enhancing value chain proposition of perishable trade. We are committed to provide our customers with reefer containers equipped with the most up to date specifications to ship perishable goods and enable them to expand to new markets around the world.” ONE’s Global reefer strategy The Global Reefer Business Planning team (GRBP), based at ONE’s HQ in Singapore, develops ONE’s global reefer marketing and business strategy through close monitoring of market demand and closely collaborating with the regional reefer steering desks located in different parts of the world. ONE’s Reefer technical team is available both on board and on shore to provide round the clock assistance and monitoring of precious reefer cargo thorughout the voyage.

OOCL announces service enhancements on Asia-East Africa Service 1 (EAX1) HONG KONG: OOCL will be enhancing its services with faster transit times between Asia and East Africa effective from mid of May. The Asia-East Africa Service 1 (EAX1) will be upgraded with direct calls from Central China and South China to Mombasa on Westbound sailings and fast transit times from Mombasa back to Asia. New port rotation of EAX1: Shanghai - Ningbo Nansha - Singapore - Mombasa - Singapore - Nansha – Shanghai. Effective voyage will be ETA Shanghai on May 21. This enhancement is in line with its commitment to offering competitive products that meet customer requirements in today’s evolving market environment and complementing its existing Asia-East Africa network. Customers will find its Asia-East Africa suite of products offering flexibility and more shipping options, such as: The Asia-East Africa Service 3 (EAX3), providing direct calls from Central China and South China to Mombasa, with the flexibility of multiple first leg options in this service loop.

FFFAI hosts 1st Webinar on Financial Planning of Custom Brokers post COVID-19 lock down Cont’d. from Pg. 1 The only way of getting out of potential depression is to be empowered with substantial knowledge to read the writings on the wall, to adopt correct strategy for survival and growing. The prolonged lockdown has provided an opportunity to the industry for gearing up to grab opportunity in future. Accordingly, Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations in India (FFFAI) has initiated the knowledge gaining mechanism by hosting a webinar on May 1 on ‘Financial Planning of Custom Brokers’, which was addressed by eminent management consultant Sandesh Vasant Mestry as Keynote Speaker along with Mr AV Vijaykumar, Chairman, FFFAI; Mr Shankar Shinde, Chairman-Elect, FFFAI; Mr S Ramakrishna, Immediate Past Chairman, FFFAI and President Delhi Customs Brokers Association; Mr Samir Shah and Mr Debashis Dutta, Past Chairmen, FFFAI. The Webinar was moderated by M r Te j C o n t r a c t o r, P r e s i d e n t , I n d i a n I n s t i t u t e o f Freight Forwarding, which is the training arm of FFFAI. Mr Dushyant Mulani, Honorary Secretary of the Federation proposed vote of thanks. The webinar was participated by more than 500 FFFAI members from across the Country. “Presently we are all in the middle of crisis and we never imagined such a devastating scenario in our lifetime. At this crisis period we need to work together for a common goal. Knowledge is power. We will have to acquire proper knowledge for our survival which can be disseminated by domain experts. With this objective in mind FFFAI with its training arm IIFF initiated its first webinar, and many more to come”, said Contractor while moderating. In his address Mr Vijaykumar maintained that the CB/FF/Logistics industry is going through crucial juncture owing to COVID-19 pandemic and worldwide lockdown. “FFFAI is in constant discussions with government to mitigate the hardship and got success to some extent. Entire manufacturing and Export Import industry is suffering very badly. However, we are providing every possible service to all our customers by taking huge burden on us,” he said. In his opinion, Covid 19 would erode CB/FF’s finance on various accounts including massive outflow but without having inflow of revenue. “We will have to go long way with this critical and uncertain time. Accordingly, we need to review and revisit our business model with proper financial planning and control. Our proficiency will be measured by our financial management, credit management, utilization of digital platform and reducing admin cost. So we need professional advice for course correction, we all (small, medium and big) are facing huge financial crisis at present and it would continue up to an uncertain time,” Mr Vijaykumar cautioned. Management consultant Mr Mestry is also associated as Professor in renowned SP Jain Institute of Management & Research in Mumbai. He is a specialist in Family Business Management. “At this critical time first and utmost thing would be managing our finance. Especially when our business is not generating any revenue and our office remains shut for a quite long time because of ongoing lock down. At the same time we will have to follow compliances and MHA order issued on March 29 regarding payment of salary to our staff. The Act has superseded all other Acts and non-compliance will be an offence,” Mr Mestry pointed out. Under this precarious scenario industry should seriously think about drastic cost cutting measures in all means. In his opinion, recovery pattern may be ups and down in the days to come, in view of the fact that there may be multiple lockdowns in ensuing months, can come all of a surprise, frequently, area wise, building wise, etc. Work from Home will be one of the viable mechanisms amid challenges, to keep business going. He also cautioned about signing an agreement and putting Force Majeure Clause very carefully to avoid hassles. “When there is a contract signed, though usually it is a most neglected clause in the agreement throughout the year, we should be very careful about putting the Force Majeure Clause,” Mr Mestry suggested by analyzing the Clause and its conditions in details in light of the Finance Ministry’s directives on it related to COVID-19 lock down. Commenting on new working norms and compliances laid by the Ministry of Home Affairs Mr Mestry said that the industry would be needing more money to comply with new norms and compliances guided by MHA and local authorities. As a result, they would have to work with half of strength of staff, less public conveyance, social distancing, frequent sanitization, ‘work from home’ model with techno savvy people, health insurance as organization’s responsibility, substantial investment in technology, etc. On the other hand there will be tremendous crisis in both demand and supply sides worldwide which would tremendously reduce volume of business and revenue ear ning. Entire logistics and supply chain and logistics system will witness severe disrupting.

“Under this critical condition we should focus on conserving cash as ‘cash is king’. “Advance payment from customers, opting for bank credit, stopping capex except digitization or IT, right sizing of organisation, focused selling/marketing, frequently communicating with customers and sticking to business terms while dealing with customers would play as viable antidotes in preventing any possible disaster for an organisation,” Mr Mestry unequivocally stated. Taking cue from Mr Mestry Mr Ramakrishna maintained that digitization, signing a contract in rightful manner and cash management would definitely play pivotal roles behind the success of a company at this difficult time. “We at FFFAI are developing knowledge base for the entire Export Import industry and we are doing fabulously for the national interest as always. New normal like ‘work from home’ or digitization will definitely enhance our working ability supported by our experienced staff/executives,” he further added. He suggested for taking advantages out of lock down situation for developing knowledge base, which need to be passed on to the company’s work force to be enlightened. He also showed high optimism about ‘work from home’ concept as far as better results are concerned. “Lock down has provided an opportunity of thinking WFH concept that we need not to have huge working set up at our office, neither we need to go for downsizing the staff strength, by utilizing them in better way,” he opined. “Silver lining is that we are updating ourselves. A few months ago we were seemingly stuck up, but currently we are learning many more things like better utilization of digitization, working from home or working in a way which our next generations would follow, considering the fact that this will be the new normal irrespective of lock down or without lockdown,” Mr Dutta supplemented. According to him, focus should be on less field workers (exception will be clearing or delivery purpose) and digitization which would give new dimension to CB/FF fraternity and its work pattern. Mr Shah emphasized on more collaboration with similar thinking and like-minded CBs/FFs in different parts of the country to reduce cost for a company and win-win benefits. “Healthy competition is the integral part of our business/working, but are we surviving because of competition? We are surviving because of our inherent ability and quality, rather than competing on ability of offering credit, appeasing and only relationship building,” Mr Shah further explained on healthy collaboration with each other. In his opinion, this is the correct time when the industry got an opportunity to strengthen them. “Every company has to think about their mechanism to live with new the new normal to stay afloat. Finance Ministry relaxes norms for exporters to exports goods within 90 days of procurement Cont’d. from Pg. 1

Merchant exporters can buy goods from registered businesses by paying GST at 0.1 percent on the condition that the goods will be exported within 90 days, the Finance Ministry said today. The government has extended this 90-day period till June 30 if the stated period ended between March 20 and June 29. This would help merchant exporters who are struggling due to adverse economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic,

said Rajat Mohan, a partner at AMRG & Associates. The government had extended all GST-related deadlines falling between March 20 and June 29 to June 30, but there was no clarity if merchant exporters will get this benefit, Mohan said. Merchant exporters are those involved in trading activity, and pay 0.1 percent in GST while procuring goods domestically. The government also clarified that if a resolution professional is changed

midway during the insolvency resolution process of a company, a new registration won’t be required, and only the authorised signatory needs to be changed. The 30-day deadline to avail a new registration by a resolution professional once a company goes into the Insolvency and Bankr uptcy Code has also been extended to June 30. The clarification states that a new registration can be availed within 30 days of appointment of a resolution professional or June 30, whichever is later.

Govt thinking of an Import Substitution Policy: Nitin Gadkari NEW DELHI: Union Minister for M S M E a n d R o a d Tr a n s p o r t a n d Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari has informed that a policy on imports substitution is being thought of in the wake of the new economic situation created by COVID -19 pandemic. He called upon various stake-holders to convert knowledge into wealth by improving quality through innovations and cutting down cost. The Union Minister emphasized that special focus towards export enhancement is the need of the hour and necessary practices shall be

adopted to reduce Power cost, Logistics cost and Production cost to become competitive in the global market. Further, he mentioned that there is also need to focus on import substitution to replace foreign imports with domestic production. He added that industry should focus more on innovation, entrepreneurship, science and t e c h n o l o g y, r e s e a r c h s k i l l a n d experiences to convert the knowledge into wealth. The Minister recalled that Government of Japan has offered special package to its industries for

taking out Japanese investments from China and move elsewhere. He opined that it is an opportunity for India which should be grabbed. Some of the major issues highlighted and the suggestions given included: No licensing fee for transfer of technologies to SMEs, dissemination of schemes promoting livelihood for tribal areas, support to pharma sector SMEs in supply chain management and further extending 3 months moratorium given by RBI, extending sof t loan, defer ring / reducing GST etc.

Commerce Ministry in favour of extending Export sops till March 2021 NEW DELHI: India is likely to continue export incentives worth Rs 40,000 crore till next year as the government looks to cushion the impact of Covid-19 on the country’s outward shipments. The commerce and industry ministry is considering a plan to extend the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) till March 31, 2021. The proposal was mentioned in a letter to development commissioners of special economic zones from the Department of Commerce. India’s exports shrank almost 35% to $21.41 billion in March from a year earlier. They declined 4.8% to $314.31 billion in FY20 from $330.08 billion in FY19. “MEIS extension will bring predictability to exports pricing and on the policy front. Exporters’ confidence will get a boost,” said Ajay Sahai, director general of the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations. The scheme was

extended to December 31, 2020, the government said last month when it announced the extension of the extant foreign trade policy by a full financial year till March 31, 2021. Under MEIS, the gover nment provides duty benefits, depending on the product and the destination country. Rewards under the scheme are payable as a percentage of the realised free-onboard value (of 2%, 3% and 5%) and the MEIS duty credit scrips can be transferred or used to pay duties including basic customs duty. Exporters are estimated to have received benefits worth Rs 35,000-40,000 crore under MEIS in FY19. “Exporters would need financial support from the government to stand on their feet again… The government has to decide whether extending or increasing the MEIS rates is an option they would like to exercise,” said Pratik Jain, national leader, indirect tax, PwC. He said one specific recommendation of the industry was restoration of the 2%

additional benefit of MEIS, which was withdrawn from January 1, 2020. However, the reward rates under the scheme won’t be revised nor would they be expanded to cover more products such as gems and jewellery, a government official said. This is because the scheme is transitioning to the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products. The government has also rejected a demand to provide an additional 5% benefit to all exports, saying it is “not feasible at this stage.” The government has also vetoed a suggestion that MEIS be granted based on shipping bills, stating that the benefit is provided only after payment is realised and also said free trade and warehousing zone exports are not eligible for MEIS. The scheme is being disputed at the World Trade Organization, with the US claiming India’s export subsidy programmes had hurt American workers.

DGFT bans export of alcohol-based hand sanitisers NEW DELHI: The Union government has banned the export of alcohol-based hand sanitisers to other nations also grappling with the coronavirus pandemic. “Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are prohibited for export,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that comes under the Ministry of Commerce

and Industry said in a notification. The move by the government is meant to boost availability of hand sanitisers in the domestic market amid the outbreak of the infectious Covid-19 disease. Sanitisers are an essential component in the fight against the deadly infection and are used as a disinfectant to

prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Hand sanitisers were one of the first products to be sold out at retail outlets across the country as the coronavirus infection started spreading in March. Sanitisers of reputed companies are not available in the market till date due to the extended lockdown and several gaps in the supply chain.

APSEZ may renegotiate deal in Krishnapatnam Port, hints Top management AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) hinted that it may look at re-negotiating the price for acquiring a 75 per cent stake in Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited as economic conditions suffer a drastic change after the deal was announced on January 3 this year. The Krishnapatnam Port acquisition is quite transformational for APSEZ as a company as it helps us achieve the stated objectives around parity of cargo both on the east and the west coast and to service a much larger economic hinterland in the country, Deepak Maheshwari, Chief Financial Officer said in a recent analyst call. “Clearly, there has been a significant change at least in the medium and in the very short term on the economic

conditions and the cargo flows across all ports and across businesses in India because of the lockdown situation. We have to wait for a bit to see as to how this takes shape and whether we renegotiate the acquisition price or not that’s to be seen in the future. At this point, there is a share purchase agreement (SPA) we have signed with them and that is what it is. And, if there are significant changes in the market, of course one can look at it, but till the time we don’t decide that we cannot be talking about it,” Maheshwari added. The deal was to be closed in 120 days or by May 2 but has been delayed. “Originally we had 120 days, but this has been pushed out because there are 51 conditions precedent (CP) the sellers have to complete between state

approvals to lender approvals to various other approvals which are pending,” said Karan Adani, Chief Executive Officer, APSEZ. From the 51 CPs, they have only completed eight as of now and we do expect that with this lockdown, lot of these approvals will take time to come, he said. “From the buyers’ side, the major one for us is the CCI approval. We have already finished two rounds of discussions and queries with CCI and we do expect the CCI approval to come in a month or two. But, till the time the sellers CPs are not completed, we will not be in a position to complete the transaction,” Karan said adding that the deal is now slated to be closed by October-November this year.

Drewry Sailing schedules fall victim to COVID-19 L O N D O N : The practice of cancelling sailings on an industrial scale has been, since Febr uar y, the strategy put in place by the carriers to address the huge volume drop across major container trades globally, since the outbreak of COVID-19. The cancelled sailing tracker, part of the Drewry Coronavirus Hub, provides weekly insights for shippers, freight forwarders and NVOCC helping them to face the daily operational challenges, generated by the uncertainty of the sailing schedules & the continuous decrease of the capacity deployed on the major container shipping routes. The highest sailing cancellation since the COVID-19 outbreak was in Febr uar y, registering a spike of 105 cancellations across Transpacific and Asia-North Europe & Mediterranean trades; the lowest was in March, with only 33 cancellations, representing a drop of 69% from the previous month. The total sailings withdrawn on the Transpacific, Transatlantic & AsiaNorth Europe/Mediterranean trades in May 2020 is 82 out of 457 scheduled sailings for this period (18%). The Alliance has the highest number of cancelled sailings during this period (34%), followed by 2M (30%) & Ocean Alliance (21%). The Transpacific

Trade is the most affected by the reduction of capacity, with 45 blank sailings, which represents 55% of the total blank sailings in May, followed by Asia-North Europe & Mediterranean trade (34%), and Europe & Mediterranean-North America trade (11%). Overall the number of cancellations has decreased between April and May by 12%, apart from the Transpacific

trade, where we see an increase of cancelled sailings of 32%. Drewry believes that carriers will continue their practice of large-scale cancellations of sailings for months and suggests to shippers and forwarders that they not only check carefully the situation before booking but also extend their lead times in case of operational delays.

Sanjay Bhatia conducts ‘Meditation with Yogic Transmission,’ for IME(I), Mumbai Branch in stressed time of Pandemic MUMBAI: The lockdown restrictions, social distancing norms, Work From Home and stressed economy in trying times of COVID-19 have left many stressed in their homes with mariners being no exception. To overcome the induced stress and anxiety amongst the Seafarers and their families, the Mumbai Branch of The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) (IME{I}) organised a Webinar on ‘Meditation with Yogic Transmission,’ conducted by Shri Sanjay Bhatia, IAS the Chairman of Mumbai Port Trust on 2nd May specifically for its Members, Associates and fellow Mariners. President of IME(I) Mr. Uday Purohit introduced Shri Sanjay Bhatia, IAS who incidentally is a Mechanical Engineer has been practicing meditation from past two decades. Apart from being the Chairman of MbPT, Shri Bhatia is also the Chairman of Indian Ports Association and has held number of important portfolios ranging from CIDCO, Airport Metro and is the man behind development of cruise tourism in India apart from being decorated with many distinguished awards, many of them achieved with the help of Meditation. Shri Sanjay Bhatia began with stressing upon the importance of meditation especially the ‘Heartfulness Meditation’ and stated that he would demonstrate the techniques in s short and tailored session for the participants to develop upon subsequently. He commenced by sharing his experience of how he came across this specific technique years ago when he came in contact with a Superintendent of Police who introduced him to the book titled Secret and the technique of Meditation. Shri Bhatia brought out that Yogic Transmission is a special feature of Heartfulness Meditation that allows a preceptor (Trainer) to direct the flow of divine energy, which is the essence of Meditation, into a Seeker's heart. “Observe the divinity inside your heart in the form of light”, he added. Shri Bhatia explained that initially one needs a Trainer to guide the Seeker and at it may take anywhere from three sitting to some considerable time to attain maximum experience. “This technique is extremely beneficial for the youngsters of present generation, who have a high IQ but low EQ,” he added. Shri Bhatia recommended that in addition to practicing this at home even after the Lockdown restrictions are lifted, this meditation technique could be used at workplaces to attain a balanced and unified approach at work that would improve the efficiency and integrity of that organisation. He added that this should be constantly practiced, to enhance life attributes, concentration, and personality.

The 30 minute demonstration and practical session supplemented with verbal guidance saw the participants experience tranquillity and feel lighter subsequently. This period of deep rumination was followed by Mr. David Birwadkar - Head of Training Sub-Committee reflecting on the demonstration and getting queries of the enthusiastic participants clarified from Mr Bhatia. This was the 2nd Webinar by IME(I) with the proceedings commenced by Shri S.M. Rai and the Vote of Thanks being e x t e n d e d b y M r. C h i t t a D a s h – Fe l l o w o f I M E ( I ) . Mr Dash acknowledged one and all associated with the implementation of the successful interaction especially Mr. Sanjeev Mehra, Mr. T.S. Girish and Mr. Bhupesh Tater for the excellent arrangements behind the scene. Lastly, as suggested by Shri Sanjay Bhatia, the link (https://heartfulness.org/in/heartsapp/) to the ‘HeartsApp’ available in the app stores was shared for those enthusiasts who seek guidance on meditation. Mr. Chitta Dash also announced that the IME(I), Mumbai Branch is working on its next Webinar that would be held within a fortnight.
