Inaugurating the iconic week celebrations by the Ministries of Finance and Corporate Affairs as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Modi said India has developed various financial inclusion platforms and there is a need to create awareness about them for their optimum utilisation. There should be an effort to extend these financial inclusion solutions globally, he said.
In his address, the Prime Minister said: "It is necessary to focus on how to make our domestic banks, cur rency an important part of International Supply Chain and Trade". "We have shown in the last 8 years that if India collectively decides to do something, then India becomes a new hope for the world. Today, the world is looking at us not just as a big consumer market but looking at us with hope and confidence as a
capable, game-changing, creative, innovative ecosystem," Modi said. The Prime Minister emphasised that the youth have been kept at the heart of the reforms the Country has undertaken in the last eight years. "By reducing more than 30,000 compliances, abolishing more than 1,500 laws, and decriminalising several provisions of the Companies Act, we have ensured that Indian companies not only move ahead but also achieve new heights," he said.
Government mulls Index to gauge Logistics costs Cont’d. from Pg. 3 “We a r e a c t i v e l y c o n s i d e r i n g working out a framework for the assessment of logistics costs and also the possibility of having an index, which can help us in the determination of and/or monitoring of logistics costs at any point of time,” a senior official said recently. Some private agencies have pegged India’s logistics costs at 13-14% of its gross domestic product (GDP). But some experts have raised questions over the methodology used by the private parties to arrive at such costs, given the fragmented nature and the complex dynamics of the logistics sector, and opaque pricing models adopted by relevant players. However, for these very reasons,
estimating the actual logistics costs will warrant an elaborate exercise. The new policy will likely set an ambitious target of reducing the costs by up to five percentage points over the next five years. Encouraged by the Centre and acknowledging the growing importance of keeping logistics costs at reasonable levels, eight states have adopted their own logistics policies. These states are Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Telangana, Kerala, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, official sources said. More states are following suit. India improved its ranking in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) from 54 in 2014 to 44 in 2018. However, it trailed countries like Singapore (rank 7), South Korea (25),
China (26), Taiwan (27), Thailand (32) and South Africa (33). Also, while it has done relatively well on “tracking and tracing” and “timeliness”, its scores on “customs”, “infrastr ucture” and “logistics competence” parametres of the LPI were lower than its headline LPI score in 2018. A Customs officials said several initiatives have since been taken to improve the performance, which would reflect in future ranking. The country’s road logistics market alone is estimated to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 8% to reach $330 billion by 2025, driven by factors, including a rapidly growing e-commerce sector and a growing retail sales market, according to a study by an arm of consulting firm RedSeer.
Egypt receives rst Indian wheat shipment: ofcial CAIRO: The Head of the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine, Ahmed alAttar, announced that Egypt received its first Indian wheat shipment recently which was confirmed to fit all specifications. Attar assured that there is no complacency or waiver of any requirements or rules in wheat import operations. “We refused to transfer an Indian wheat shipment from Turkey to Egypt, because it did not conform to standards,” he added. “The quarantine requirements are a “red line” that cannot be tolerated, and
we check wheat shipments in warehouses in India before they reach Egypt, in order to ensure the quality of these grains and their compliance with the standard specifications that have been approved for wheat,” he explained. The Agricultural Quarantine approved the shipment of Indian wheat– amounting to 55,000 tonnes – after examining it at one of the International laboratories approved by the European Union. The Plant Quarantine also conducted a thorough examination of all wheat quantities before and during loading
from the Deendayal Port in India. It was revealed in March that India is in final talks to start exporting wheat to Egypt, the world’s largest importer, after the Russian invasion to Ukraine upset global supplies. India is the second largest wheat producing country in the world, the report said, adding that the largest purchaser of Indian wheat in 2020-2021 was Bangladesh. Egypt, Lebanon and Libya are among the Arab countries that depend the most on wheat from Russia and Ukraine, while Egypt ranks first globally in importing wheat.

CMA CGM Q1 2022: Excellent performance despite Global Supply Chains problems MARSEILLE: The Board of Directors of the CMA CGM Group, met under the Chairmanship of Mr. Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Ofcer, to review the financial statements for the first quarter of 2022. Commenting on the results just released for first quarter 2022, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, said: "During the first quarter, our Group accelerated the deployment of its strategy to become a world leader in integrated logistics. We have also taken further steps in our energy transition by forging innovative partnerships to develop low-carbon fuels and by deciding to diversify the energy sources for our future vessels. Due to strong demand, lack of available transport capacity and persistent port congestion, tensions in global supply chains are expected to continue. We remain mobilized to improve service quality and to meet the logistics challenges of our customers. We are also vigilant in the face of the risk of a deterioration in the global economic situation, linked to the pandemic, the rise in inflation and the war in Ukraine." Stepping up investments to support our supply chains customers The first quarter of 2022 continued to be impacted by COvid-19 pandemic, with a return to lockdowns in certain parts of the world, major tension on global supply chains and geopolitical tensions. Against this backdrop, and to support the growth of the transport market in the years ahead, the Group has continued with its investments to strengthen its shipping, port, logistics and air freight network. These investments will allow CMA CGM to provide comprehensive solutions and improve the quality of service to its customers while stepping up its energy transition. With this ambitious investment program, the Group aims to strengthen its customers' supply chains to serve the global economy. The current operating environment is affected by port and inland congestions, as well as scarcity of assets. This has resulted in a marked increase in operating expenses, in particular vessel chartering costs, additional port handling costs, and labor costs for logistics activities. Moreover, the recent deterioration of the geopolitical situation has triggered major energy price increases which have led to a 46% rise in bunker costs between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Shipping: major expansion of the eet with an order book of 69 vessels • A new order of 16 vessels, including 10 dual fuel LNG-powered and 6 dual fuel methanol-powered, bringing the orderbook to 69 vessels. • Three new 15,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) vessels and five new 15,000 TEU chartered vessels have been added to the Group's fleet during the first quarter of 2022. • Acquisition of 26 second-hand vessels since January 1st, of which 14 during the first quarter of 2022. • An additional 95,000 containers during the first quarter.
CMA CGM accelerates its strategic transformation to become a major global player in logistics The CMA CGM Group has continued with its plan to develop end-to-end shipping and logistics solutions to support its customers' supply chains. Following the 2019 acquisition of CEVA Logistics, CMA CGM has stepped up its transformation with the finalization of three strategic acquisitions at the beginning of April 2022. Air cargo: development of a complementary offering to meet diversied transport demand In March 2021, the CMA CGM Group created CMA CGM Air Cargo, a new operating and commercial division specialized in air freight. CMA CGM Air Cargo offers solutions which complement the shipping and logistics expertise. Operating and nancial performance for the rst quarter of 2022 In the first quarter of 2022, revenue reached USD 18.2 billion, thanks mainly to the Group’s shipping activities. EBITDA came in at USD 8.9 billion, representing an EBITDA margin of 48.7%. Net income, Group share was USD 7.2 billion. The Group continued to strengthen its financial structure, supported by its operating performance. Net debt stood at USD 6.9 billion at March 31, 2022, down USD 0.9 billion from December 31, 2021. Shipping activity: increase in revenue and protability In the first quarter of 2022, the Group transported 5.3 million TEUs, representing a decrease of 2.8% compared with the first quarter of 2021. Volume growth is currently constrained by port and inland congestion which has led to longer transit times for vessels. The Group's shipping revenue reached USD 14.8 billion, representing a 73.2% increase compared with the same period in 2021. EBITDA was reached USD 8.5 billion. The EBITDA margin increase was driven by an average revenue per TEU of USD 2,800 against a backdrop of higher operating expenses (notably bunkers, vessel chartering costs, port handling). Operating costs thus increased by more than 16% compared with the same period in 2021. Bunker costs have increased by approximately 46%. Outlook Uncertainties weighing on global trade Persistent major tensions on supply chains continue to weigh on the global fleet's effective capacity since the beginning of 2022 and on the Group's operations. The generalization of port congestions leads to a deterioration of the quality and service and constrains shipping volumes. In addition, the Group is closely monitoring the evolution of the current geopolitical situation and its consequences on the macro-economic outlook. Even if the Group remains confident about its financial performance prospects for 2022, the current environment and its medium and long-ter m consequences remain uncertain. The sharp rise in energy prices, combined with price inflation of many raw materials, is weighing on retail consumption and could have a negative impact on the economic situation and the outlook for global trade.

A.P. Moller - Maersk completes acquisition of Senator International COPENHAGEN: A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) announces the closing of the acquisition of Senator International, a well-renowned global company in freight forwarding. Senator brings with it a strong organization and a welldeveloped airfreight network comprising own controlled flights and long-term partnerships with best-in-class airlines, a well-established full container load (FCL) and less than container load (LCL) network and specialized services such packaging, warehousing and distribution across five continents. “The acquisition will enable Maersk to offer an even wider range of products and the ability to provide flexible and integrated logistics solutions to our customers, allowing them to speed up or slow down cargo depending on their changing supply chain needs. We are delighted to welcome the Senator team to our Maersk family. As a global provider of integrated logistics, we are improving our ability to provide end-to-end solutions to our customers. Moller-Maersk. In the past two years, knock-on effects of Covid-19 have led to widespread congestions and production issues. As a result, more customers are requesting alternative means of cargo transportation. Senator will add their broad industry expertise and product knowledge to Maersk’s existing network and thus provide customers with increased flexibility and redundancy in their supply chains.
The enterprise value of the transaction on a post IFRS 16 basis is approximately USD 644m as announced on 2nd of November assuming unchanged FX rate. “By joining Maersk, our customers will have access to a broader portfolio of products for their business needs and provide them with a single point of contact. It’s a perfect match, and we are really excited about the next chapter in our united journey,”said Tim-Oliver Kirschbaum, CEO of Senator International. Senator’s deep experience and solid transport network will be key to the continued joint success, and we will bring new opportunities to our customers under the Maersk brand. Maersk’s ambition is to have approximately one third of the annual air tonnage carried within its own controlled freight network, which will be achieved through a combination of owned and leased aircraft. The remaining capacity will be provided by strategic commercial carriers and charter flight operators.

Port of Colombo ranked most efficient port in South Asia and the Indian Sub-Continent by World Bank COLOMBO: The Port of Colombo has been ranked as the most efficient port in South Asia and the Indian Sub Continent, 3rd in the Indian Ocean rim and 22nd among 370 ports globally, in the second edition of the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2021, ranking developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence and Financial Services. Summarising the report, the authors say, “…how a maritime port performs is a crucial element in the cost of international trade in a Country. Unfortunately, ports and terminals, particularly for containers, can often be sources of shipment delays, supply chain disruptions, additional costs and reduced competitiveness”. They go on to state that “despite the centrality of the port to global value chains, one of the major challenges to stimulating improvement has been the lack of a reliable, consistent, and comparable
basis on which to compare operational performance across different ports…. This technical report, which represents the second e d i t i o n o f t h e C o n t a i n e r Po r t Performance Index (CPPI), has been produced by the Transport Global P ractice of the World Bank in collaboration with the Maritime, Trade and Supply Chain division of S&P Global Market Intelligence”. C o m m e n t i n g o n t h e Po r t o f Colombo’s ranking in the CPPI, Dr Prasantha Jayamanna, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), who are also the operators of the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and the East Container Terminal (ECT), two of the four container terminals in the Port of Colombo, stated that “The World Bank/S&P Administrative (subjective/expert) and Statistical rankings of Colombo among the top 7% of the ports in the world and the best in South Asia, is a testament to the Port’s position as the primary transhipment
hub in South Asia. In addition to the valuable contribution made by our own JCT, the ranking acknowledges the significant role played by our partner terminals, Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) and South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), who together have made the port what it is today”. Dr Jayamanna went on to say that “Given SLPA’s role as Regulator and facilitator of port development of Sri Lanka, it is important to record that the Port of Colombo will continue to develop ahead of projected demand and towards this, construction has already begun on two new deep water terminals, the East Container Terminal (ECT) by the SLPA and the West Container Terminal (WCT), by a consortium led by Adani Ports and including John Keells Holdings. These developments will progressively add over 7 million TEU of throughput capacity over the next 2-5 years.”
Freight rates decline in May as transporters passed on benet of lower diesel prices: Report NEW DELHI: Freight rates have come down in May as transporters passed on the benefit of the lower diesel prices due to a cut in excise duty, credit rating agency Crisil said in a report. Cement and mining applications saw a flattish trajectory in freight rates in the previous month owing to the high base of April, while for the auto-carriers, a g r i - p r o d u c t s , c o n t a i n e r, FMCG/FMCD, petroleum tankers, textile and steel, these rates saw a lower single-digit drop, it added. In May, transporters passed on the benefit of a fall in diesel prices by decreasing freight rates on several routes, the credit rating agency said. Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman had on May 21 announced a cut in excise duty on petrol by a record Rs. 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs. 6, helping the OMCs lower the prices of the two commodities.
CRISFrex CRISFrex indicates that freight rates have dropped month-onmonth with free cash flow (preequated monthly instalment) decreasing 100 basis points, Crisil said. CRISFrex captures the changes in freight rates on a sequential basis. Besides, it also tracks the free cash flows of transporters on an ongoing basis. Higher FCF would typically support demand for commercial vehicles. Utilizationer, fleet utilisation was flat month-on-month and while for the market load, it was higher, which was offset by slightly lower utilisation for parcel/loose goods, mining (largely coal and iron ore), and agri-products, the remaining commodities, including auto-carriers, container applications, fast-moving consumer goods and durables, steel,
textile, and petroleum tankers, saw flattish trajectory in utilisation, as per the report. Freight rates decline Freight rates, too, declined for most commodities but were stable for mining and cement. Freight rates declined month-on-month for consumer essentials, such as agri-products, FMCG/FMCD, loose goods and discretionary goods, it added. The complete effect of this duty cut would be visible in the index from next month. This is because the central government set an extrinsic decline in excise duty at the end of the month, whereas CRISFrex represents freight rates and fuel prices for the entire month, it noted. In May, around 60 per cent of the combinations saw a decrease in freight rates, while around 16 per cent were stable, as per the report.
Rubber industry expected to double its exports by 2025 MUMBAI: All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA) established in 1945, an apex body for rubber industries in India. AIRIA organised an event for exchanging ideas and suggestions for the smooth functioning of the rubber industry in next coming years. The meeting comprises Dr. Sawar Dhanania President, Mr. Shashi Singh, Senior Vice President, Mr. Vikram Makar Immediate past President, Mr Vinod Bansal, Chairman Export Committee accompanied by 50 important non tyre exporters of goods. The event was attended by dignitaries from MSMEs and SMEs across India. The meeting aimed to
highlight the problems and the potential of the Rubber Industry in India. Rubber industry has a huge potential for exporters as India is a labour-intensive market. Due to Covid-19 and Ukraine war crisis there has been a host of problems like availability of raw materials, increase in shipping prices, and challenges to the cash flow. India has the highest cost in logistics, i.e 1718%. With the National Logistics Policy (NLP) announced the total logistics amount paid by the exporter will be reduced to 6-7%. MSME criteria should be increased from 250 cr in order to keep the future of growth intact.
The 2 billion markets of non tyre rubber sector aim to double their exports by 2025. Mr. Shashi Singh, Senior Vice President of AIRIA said, “Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and the Export Promotion Councils should educate MSMEs on export procedures, documentation requirements, and the finer points of export. We expect IIFT & the Export Promotion Councils should share export market intelligence and arrange specialist meets. It will be beneficial to individuals who are new to exporting and wish to understand how to become export-ready.

Mangoes exported to the USA through JNPA Historic moment as for the first- me Indian mangoes will be exported by sea route to the US NAVI MUMBAI: Following the initial unsuccessful attempts in 2019, the first Container of Indian mangoes will reach the US in July. To bring down the logistics cost by up to 10 per cent and capture the overseas market, Indian mangoes will now be exported to the United States through the sea route. The first Container left f r o m J a w a h a r l a l N e h r u Po r t Authority (JNPA) on Sunday, 5th May and will reach Newark city in New Jersey by the first week of July. By exporting via sea route, the cost of transportation will come down to Rs55 from Rs.60 per kg, said Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), Deputy Manager, Bhaskar Patil. “We had sent 16,560 kg mangoes in 5,520 boxes to JNPT on Friday (June 3). They were dispatched on June 5 and would reach the US by the first week of July,” said Patil.
In 2019, mangoes from the Country were exported by the sea route to London after air freight rates went up following the stoppage of flights from Jet Airways. The same year, Indian firms tried to send mangoes to the US via sea though the attempt failed. While officials from MSAMB were exploring the sea route for mango export to the US, it was seen inviable given the duration to reach the destination against the short shelf life of the fruit. Finally, the first consignment is now ready to be transported via sea by Sanap Agro Pvt Limited. According to MSAMB’s Executive Director Sunil Pawar, this is a historic moment as for the first-time Indian mangoes will be exported by sea route to the US. “The existing air freight rates are so costly that it takes Rs. 550 per kg of
mango as logistics cost. Through the sea route, it will come down to 10 per cent of the air freight rate to reach the US market. It will also help Indian farmers to send a large number of mangoes to the US as there is good demand there,” Pawar said. According to MSAMB officials, three different organisations including Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), MSAMB, and Agricultural and Processed Food P roducts Export Development Authority (APEDA) worked together to make export by sea route successful. In the year 2019, MSAMB tried to export mangoes by sea to the US market. While the mangoes took 38 days to reach, there was no proper treatment done. “Now BARC has worked on all the shortcomings and mangoes are being exported,” said Pawar.
Container Schedule Reliability declines marginally in April : Sea-Intelligence COPENHAGEN: Schedule reliability declined in April 2022 by 1.3 percentage points to 34.6 per cent, compared to the previous month, according to analysts at Sea-Intelligence. On a year-to-year basis, schedule reliability was down 4.7 percentage points. "This means that the 2022 score has been slightly below the 2021 level in each of the first four months," according to Sea-Intelligence's latest Global Liner Performance (GLP) report, which covers schedule reliability across 34 different trade lanes and more than 60 carriers. "Global schedule reliability seems to
continue to follow the trend seen in 2021, with schedule reliability within a small range but at a slightly lower report base," said Alan Murphy, CEO of SeaIntelligence. The average delay for LATE vessel arrivals decreased once again, this time by 1.04 days to 6.41 days in April 2022. This is the first time that the delay figure has dropped below the 7-day mark since August 2021. That said, it continues to be the highest across each month when compared historically. With schedule reliability of 47.5 per cent, Maersk was the most reliable carrier in April 2022. Next highest was Maersk subsidiary Hamburg Sud with a
schedule reliability of 42.5 per cent. There were six carriers with schedule reliability of 30 per cent to 40 per cent and six with schedule reliability of 20 per cent to30 per cent. "In April 2022, once again, a lot of the carriers were very close to each other in terms of schedule reliability, with 11 carriers within 12 percentage points of each other. Wan Hai had the lowest schedule reliability in April 2022 of 21.7 per cent. On a year-on-year level, only four of the top-14 carriers recorded an improvement in schedule reliability in April 2022, with the largest improvement of just 2.3 percentage points," Mr Murphy pointed out.
India-EU to resume FTA talks from June 27 NEW DELHI: After a gap of about nine years, India and the EU will likely resume the much-awaited negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) from June 27, as both the sides eye a deal by next fiscal, sources said. Before the negotiations begin, Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal may visit Brussels later this month — either ahead of the next ministerial of the World Trade Organization starting June 12, or after that — to set the stage for the talks, one of the sources said. “The EU team will visit India after that to formally resume the negotiations,” he added. Sources last week said both the sides would first take stock of the progress made so far and discuss how to proceed further. “It makes sense to focus on points of convergence first before moving on to the contentious matters,” one of the sources had said. Formal negotiations between the two sides for the FTA were stuck over stark differences after 16 rounds of talks
between 2007 and 2013. The EU insisted that India scrap or slash hefty import duties on sensitive products such as automobiles, alcoholic beverages and dairy products, and open up legal services. Similarly, India’s demand included greater access to the EU market for its skilled professionals, among others. However, both the sides have now decided to take the negotiations to their logical conclusion. The EU, even after the Brexit, continued to be India’s largest export destination (as a bloc) in FY22, although it has lost some appeal. The country’s outbound shipments to the EU jumped 57% on-year in FY22 to $65 billion, albeit on a contracted base. Similarly, its imports from the EU jumped 29.4% last fiscal to $51.4 billion. In April, the EU and India decided to set up a trade and technology council to boost bilateral ties, as the bloc’s President Ursula von der Leyen met Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
This move underscored growing co-operation between New Delhi and Brussels, as the US is the only other country that has a technical agreement with the EU, along the lines of the one signed with India now. The council is aimed at providing political-level oversight of the entire spectrum of the India-EU ties and to ensure closer coordination. India signed an FTA with the UAE in February, New Delhi’s first such pact with any economy in a decade, and sealed another trade deal with Australia in April. Currently, it is also negotiating FTAs with the UK and Canada. The Gulf Cooperation Council, too, has evinced to sign an FTA with India. The negotiations are a part of India’s broader strategy to forge “fair and balanced” trade agreements with key economies and revamp existing pacts to boost trade. The move gained traction after India pulled out of the Chinadominated RCEP talks in November 2019.

JNPA celebrates World Environment Day with Tree Plantation Drive, Environmental Pledge and several other programs with zeal Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Recently, JNPA also launched its first Sustainability Report at the hands of Union Minister MoPSW Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, which showcases the Port’s efforts towards environmental protection and sustainable development. Speaking at the occasion, Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPA, brought various initiatives taken by the JNPA to preserve ecological balance. He stated, “J N Port has taken up a series of projects and strategies for the environmental protection. It is a very proud moment for us; we have released our first sustainability report for the financial year 2020-2021 to showcase our efforts and commitment as an environmentally conscious Port. Every developmental project we conduct, we ensure that it is developed through sustainable means and in balance with ecology. Our primary aim is to reduce the carbon footprints as much as possible.” Celebrating World Environment Day, keeping the ‘Only One Earth’ theme at the core, JNPA took the ‘Environmental Pledge’ to preserve the ecology and protect the diverse flora and fauna in and around the Port area. JNPA employees also performed a street play on the ‘Only One Earth’ theme, spreading awareness about saving the planet through small steps which can make a big difference. In line with the directive on the Green Port Initiative by the Ministry of Shipping, J N Port has created an action plan covering all the port operations. With its consistent efforts to address the Global climate change problem at the port level, the Port has taken the initiative to acquire “Green Port Status”.
