Adani Group close to controlling 50% of Indian Containerized Trade Adani’s Nation-wide port network is currently processing around 43% of the Container volumes MUMBAI: Adani Group is getting closer to controlling 50% of the Indian containerized trade, thanks to its ambitious terminal network expansion and strategic alliances with leading container lines. With its flagship Mundra Port leading that p l a y, A d a n i ’ s n a t i o n - w i d e p o r t network is currently processing around 43% of the container volumes carried into and out of India. Leading box lines MSC and CMA CGM and Adani are partners in ongoing terminal joint ventures. The group handled 723,000 TEU in May and 714,000 TEU in June out of its five container-handling port facilities, with total Indian volumes reaching 1.66 million TEU and 1.7 million TEU, respectively. Of that, Mundra contributed some 550,000 TEU in May and 558,000 TEU in June (including volumes handled by DP World Mundra, or MICT), according to the latest data. That market share is poised to expand further with Adani targeting to open a dedicated container-
handling facility in Gangavaram Port next year. This is an East Coast gateway it acquired a year ago. As a result, the growth gap between Mundra and Nhava Sheva/JNPT is widening, after the former became the country’s largest container handler in fiscal 2020-21. “FY22 has been a stellar year for APSEZ [Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone], with the achievement of various milestones for itself and new benchmarks for India’s maritime industry,” said Karan Adani, CEO of APSEZ. “The company marked a record cargo volume of 312 MMT with Mundra Port alone handling 150 MMT, a feat never achieved by any other commercial port in the Country.” He added, “We are confident of APSEZ’s growth prospects in FY23, given India’s expected GDP growth and boost to India’s Iron and Steel industry from China’s decision to cap its steel production and absence of exports from Russia. APSEZ is fully geared to ride this wave.” With Gangavaram Port added, APSEZ has operations out of 12 port locations in India. Gangavaram, a
deep-water, multi-purpose minor complex located close to Visakhapatnam, currently features nine cargo berths with an annual capacity of 64 MMT. APSEZ is looking to become a 400-MMT cargo handler by 2025, compared with 312 MMT moved during fiscal 2021-22, up 26% yearover-year. “The acceleration of our cargo volumes is a manifestation of our ability to continue to execute on our strategy,” pointed out Adani, who went on to explain, “Our network of ports across the Indian coastline coupled with our integrated logistics capabilities, focus on technology enabled digitised operations and, most importantly, the deep relations that we have built with our customers and partners (that include the Global Shipping Lines), are all coming together to make APSEZ full-fledged integrated ports & logistics platform that augments each other.” Adani noted, “We anticipate our growth to continue to accelerate given our capabilities that are now best-in-class and the tailwind of a growing Indian economy.”
States urged to reform, seize export space being vacated by China NEW DELHI: China figured prominently at the recent Chief Secretaries' conference with at least three presentations focusing on how India must take advantage of the economic space being vacated by China. It is learnt that the thrust was on initiating key State-level reforms to increase exports by grabbing the lowskill manufacturing base China is exiting as wages rise there. "This is India's Moment. (India can be) a potentially large beneficiary of China + 1 and "friend shoring" as "China (is) vacating low-skilled manufacturing export space," a JP Morgan presentation at the meet on 'India's Growth Imperative and the Role of Exports' said. It listed out apparel, ceramics, footwear, leather, iron and steel, furniture and gems and pearls as areas which China is fast vacating. Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Spain, Italy and Germany are among the countries increasing their market share in these sectors as China exits them. It pointed out that demography is in India's favour as 'working age population is to increase even as that of other economies shrink'. JP Morgan made a strong case for a public capex push to boost near-term aggregate demand, increase private
sector investment and utilisation levels in areas that are labour intensive and thereby create blue-collar construction jobs that are needed post- pandemic. It cited the example of China and how its focus on 'low skill manufacturing pulled labour out of lower-productivity agriculture'. "India's endowment/opportunity lies in low skill manufacturing exports, where it is punching much below its weight. Service exports reveal competitive advantage but will impact white collar workers; key is to create more blue-collar jobs," the financial service provider said. It noted that the pandemic has made several "non-tradable ser vices" tradable and India is in prime position to capture post-Covid digitisation opportunity provided due policy reforms are undertaken. Global major Credit Suisse pointed out that 'the next decade is likely to see a significant shift in production out of China' and it is 'India's game to lose'. Talking of opportunities in the 'gar ments sector', Credit Suisse observed that while the initial shift away from China benefited Bangladesh and Vietnam, there is a lot more that needs to shift. "An additional $50b of apparel
exports can shift out of China. India has the skills and upstream value chains. Some of the most populous regions with cheapest labour need hubs", it said in a presentation on the 'Role of States in India's Growth Acceleration'. "Creation of hubs that may be simple to start with, but within a generation innovate to global leadership (e.g., Japan in the 1950s)", it added. It mentioned internal as well as external export opportunities in goods and services and specifically mentioned electronics, gar ments, consumer durables, specialty chemicals, automotive components (particularly EVs) as sectors that have strong potential going forward. Credit Suisse was emphatic that the next stage of reforms is needed at the State level in urban governance, real estate regulation, agriculture, power distribution, land records modernisation, labour law simplification, pollution control and so on. China also figured big in the presentation made by the then CEO Niti Aayog Amitabh Kant. He noted that while at the eve of Independence, India was richer than China or Korea on a percapita basis (PPP ter ms), today incomes in Korea are 5x that of India's and China's 2x of India's.

The PPP model of development was first introduced in the port sector in the mid-1990s. JNPA entered into the first agreement with the private player with Nhava-Sheva International Container Terminal in 1997. Since then PPP became the preferred mode of development.

Goods and Services Tax rule changes to help but execution key, say Exporters The rule change will come in handy at a time when strong external headwinds have threatened to disrupt the robust momentum in the Country’s Exports NEW DELHI: A raft of changes announced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council last week, including the one to expedite refunds to those categorised as “risky exporters”, will certainly help but much depends on their implementations, exporters said recently. The council has suggested that rule 96 of the Central GST Rules be amended to provide for transmission of Integrated GST refund claims on the portal in a system generated FORM GST RFD-01 to the jurisdictional GST authorities for processing. Prior to this, the refund claims were suspended or withheld where the exporter is identified as risky and authorities will conduct lengthy verifications before deciding to release the amount. The r ule change promises to expedite such IGST refund claims. The Council decided that supplies from duty-free shops at international terminal to outgoing international passengers will be
considered as exports by such s h o p s . C o n s e q u e n t l y, r e f u n d benefits will be available to them on such supplies. Relevant sections of the extant CGST rules will be scrapped to facilitate this. Suranjan Gupta, Executive Director EEPC India, said: “Conceptually, it (move on ‘risky’ exporters) promises great relief to exporters. But we have to see actual implementation to gauge whether the intended benefits are finally coming the exporters’ way or not.” Raja Shanmugham, President of the Tirupur Exporters Association that represents the Country’s largest garment cluster, said exporters should not be classified as “risky” arbitrarily by tax authorities, as has been the practice. “Of course, the latest GST council decision will help. But the bigger issue is whether the taxmen should be allowed to brand an exporter ‘risky’ without giving him the opportunity to present his case. They should stop this practice altogether,” he added. While the
move to treat supplies from dutyfree shops at international terminal to outgoing international passengers as exports, too, is a good decision. However, given the limited volumes, it’s unlikely to have substantial beneficial impact on exports, said exporters. The rule change will come in handy at a time when strong external headwinds have threatened to disrupt the robust momentum in the country ’s exports. Given the tangled global supply chains in the aftermath of t h e Ru s s i a - U k r a i n e w a r a n d consequent surge in international shipping costs, Indian exporters will find it difficult to ship out products on time and honour supply commitments in the coming months. Moreover, the Country’s key markets, such as the US and the EU, are facing risks of recession. Against this backdrop, the move to expedite refunds for even “risky” exporters will help imporve their cash flow.

Value of non-petroleum exports in June 2022 was 30.12 USD billion, registering a positive growth of 5.53% over non-petroleum exports of USD 28.54 billion in June 2021. The cumulative value of nonpetroleum exports in April -June 2022-23 was USD 92.49 billion, an increase of 11.92% over USD 82.65 billion in April -June 2021-22. Value of non-petroleum and nongems and jewellery exports in June 2022 was USD 26.75 billion, registering a positive growth of 4.0% over non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports of USD 25.72 billion in June 2021. The cumulative value of non-petroleum and nongems and jewellery exports in April June 2022–23 was USD 82.43 billion, an increase of 12.19% over
cumulative value of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports of USD 73.47 billion in April -June 2021–22. Petroleum products (98.01%), Electronic goods (50.66%) and RMG of all Textiles (44.67%) led the way in high increase in exports during June 2022. India’s merchandise import in June 2022 was USD 63.58 billion, an increase of 51.02% over USD 42.1 billion in June 2021. India’s merchandise imports in April -June 2022-23 was USD 187.02 billion with an increase of 47.31% over USD 126.96 billion in April -June 2021-22. Value of non-petroleum imports was USD 42.84 billion in June 2022 with a positive growth of 36.36% over non-petroleum imports of USD 31.42 billion in June 2021. The cumulative
value of non-petroleum imports in April -June 2022–23 was USD 126.95 billion, showing an increase of 32.18% compared to non-oil imports of USD 96.04 billion in April -June 2021–22. Value of non-oil, non-GJ (gold, silver & Precious metals) imports was USD 36.7 billion in June 2022 with a positive growth of 31.71% over non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 27.87 billion in June 2021. Non-oil, non-GJ (Gold, Silver & Precious Metals) imports in April -June 2022-23 was USD 107.14 billion, recording a positive growth of 32.55%, as compared to non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 80.83 billion in April June 2021-22. The trade deficit in June 2022 was USD 25.63 billion, while it was 70.25 billion USD during April -June 2022-23.
Exports in June yet again rose amidst challenging ongoing Geo-political and rising Global uncertainties: FIEO NEW DELHI: Reacting to monthly Trade Data for June 2022, FIEO President, Dr A Sakthivel said that exports of USD 37.94 billion with a growth of 16.78 percent, yet again indicates the strength of the export sector amidst challenging ongoing geo-political and rising global uncertainties. While growth of over 22 percent with USD 116.77 billion recording highest ever exports during the first quarter of the FY 22-23 shows the commitment and hard work of exporters to achieve newer and newer remarkable milestones. FIEO President said that the top sectors, which led the exports growth during the month were Petroleum P r o d u c t s , G e m s & J e w e l l e r y,
Electronic Goods, RMG of all Textiles, Rice and Organic & Inorganic Chemicals, etc. Labour-intensive sectors also contributed to the exports basket, which itself is a good sign, further helping job creation in the country. FIEO Chief also reiterated that the benefits of the newly signed FTAs and the PLI Scheme will further help us in building as we continue to move ahead during the fiscal. Imports growth of over 63 percent is of concern and has been mainly on account of Petroleum Products; Coal, Coke and Briquettes; Gold; Organic and Inorganic Chemicals and Artificial resins and plastic materials which may be looked into. However, he added that rising imports of gold may lead to impressive gems &
jewellery exports in the coming months. Crude prices have also added to the import bill of Petroleum Products, thereby to the import basket of the country. FIEO President is of the view that though the government has announced a slew of measures to support exports, however, there is a need to further push value-added exports, augment container manufacturing, developing an Indian Shipping Line of global repute, increase the validity of RoSCTL and RoDTEP scrips to 24 months and link transferability with realisation, extend RoDTEP to EOUs, SEZ and Advance Authorisation, expand usages of RoDTEP and RoSCTL scrips and logistics support for the sector looking at the higher freight cost.
Joint efforts needed to meet Rs. 1 lakh crore Seafood export target : Experts KOCHI: India has vast scope to augment its seafood exports, and aquaculture production could be enhanced by using good quality seeds and following better management practices, said KN Raghavan, Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). Speaking at the second edition of “India Tilapia Summit 2022, jointly
organised by MPEDA and its R&D arm, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture, Raghavan, called for concerted efforts of all the stakeholders to achieve the seafood export target of Rs. 1 lakh crore from the current Rs. 57,587 crore. International expert C V Mohan, Principal Scientist, WorldFish Centre, Malaysia, noted that Tilapia has the potential to contribute 8 per cent of the
seafood export by 2025 and 14 per cent by 2030. Later on, responding to farmers’ request to reduce the price of seed, MPEDA Chairman assured to provide GIFT Tilapia at Rs. 3.50 per seed from its Multi-Species Aquaculture Complex, Vallarpadam, considering the vast potential to enhance production and its exports.

TransContainer launched Multimodal service between Russia and India via Novorossiysk M O S C O W: P J S C Tr a n s C o n t a i n e r launched a regular service for foreign trade cargo delivery on multimodal route between the Russian regions and the Indian port of Nhava Sheva (Mumbai) via Novorossiysk and the Suez Canal. Cargoes arriving at NUTEP Terminal (part of Delo Group) by rail and road will be forwarded to India once a month in accordance with a coordinated schedule. The number of ship calls will be increased to two in future. Transit time of a sea passage is approximately 14-15 days. Customers may also request for a further delivery from Nhava Sheva to Mundra Port by a feeder vessel as well as for door-to-door trucking in India. Shipments are available both in SOC and COC. “On the background of transformation of the
Russian foreign trade relations we strive to enlarge the geography of TransContainers’s international routes, flexibly adapting to our customers’ needs. We believe that the new service will meet growing demand for shipments between Russia and India and will help to ensure effective logistics between the countries,” said Nikita Pushkarev, Sales and Customer Service Director of TransContainer. The basis of the export cargo flow of the new service is papers, coiled steel and abrasives, of the import to Russia – electric appliances, non-dangerous chemicals, textile, tile and food. TransContainer ’s railway ser vices connect Novorossiysk with the Russian regions such as Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen Oblasts, Perm Krai, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Komi Republic, Republic of Karelia and many others, said the company release.

In January 2022, APM Terminals committed to bringing forward by a decade its Net Zero greenhouse gas emission target to 2040 and to a 70% reduction in absolute (total) emissions as an interim milestone for the period 20202030, which was the most ambitious target set by any terminal operator to date.
