Chennai and Kamarajar Ports marks strong growth during last fiscal CHENNAI: Chennai and KamarajarPorts have posted strong growth, emerging from the impact of COVID-19. Sunil Paliwal, Chairperson of the Chennai Port A u t h o r i t y ( C PA ) a n d C M D , Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) informed that both Chennai and Kamarajar ports are posting strong growth, emerging from the impact of COVID-19. CPA and

KPL reported 12%, 50% increase in cargo handling, respectively. There is more synergy between the ports to drive cargo growth and performance rather than competition. KPL became a fully-owned subsidiary of Chennai Port Trust in March 2020. In the FY2021-22, Chennai port handled 48.56 million tonnes (mt) of cargo, and exceeded the Shipping Ministry’s target of 44.42 mt. The Kamarajar port at Ennore in

North Chennai handled 38.74 mt as against the target of 39 mt. Chennai port reported a 12 per cent increase in cargo handling in 2021-22 as against 4 per cent in the previous year. The Kamarajar port had a 50 per cent growth in cargo handling 2021-22 as against 22 per cent in the previous year. For the current fiscal, the target for Chennai port is to achieve 49 mt and for Kamarajar port it is 42 mt, he added.

Nitin Gadkari announces new ChirnerUran-JNP-Chowk National Highway Union Minister Ni n Gadkari dedicates and inaugurates ﬁve Na onal Highway projects worth Rs. 4,135.91 crore at Panvel, Mumbai Cont’d. from Pg. 3 The development work comprises dedication of Rs. 3,500 crore JNP Road Connectivity Project to the nation and ground-breaking ceremony for work on National Highway No. 48, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Kalamboli Junction Improvement Project and the eastern entrance of proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport. Road project work has been completed to enhance the connectivity of JNP, the country's largest containerhandling port. The Union Minister reiterated the need for waterways that connect with Navi Mumbai Airport. He said as a shipping minister he had approved jetties at Belapur and Nerul. Now the state government needs to take this further to encourage waterways. If waterways get operational, one can easily reach Navi Mumbai Airport from any part of Mumbai within 13 to 21 minutes. The state should look after water taxis, he added. The Minister announced a new National Highway to ease traffic congestion in Panvel. The new highway will start from Chirner via Uran-JNP-Chowk and will connect to Goa-Mumbai highway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Mumbai-Pune old highway. This will help to reduce traffic in Panvel. The proposed highway has four tunnels. The length of the new highway is 32 KM and is proposed to be completed in the ‘Bharatmala’ scheme. JNP and the proposed Navi Mumbai airport are the growth engines of the state, added the Minister. Gavan Phata Interchange, NH-348, Kalamboli Junction. The improvement work of Kalamboli Junction will help to reduce traffic congestion and also to reduce pollution. Because of Delhi-Mumbai highway, traffic on this road will rise by 1 lakh 85 thousand vehicles. Kalamboli junction will be a state-of-theart junction, with four level roads costing Rs. 1,200 crore. Shri Gadkari further suggested developing a smart city of 10 lakh capacity to reduce the burden on Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Now the era is of planned development. This will in turn usher in overall development of the state as well, said Shri Gadkari. In the last seven years, 18 highway project works worth Rs. 10,000 crore have been sanctioned for National Highways in Raigad district, out of which five have been completed and 13 are in progress. Moreover, four works of Rs. 1792.75 crore were sanctioned recently, informed the Union Minister on this occasion. Considering the heavy rainfall in Konkan region, the Minister said that all the roads in Konkan would be made of cement concrete.

DCSA : Beta Releases of Standards • DCSA Publishes Beta Releases of Standards for the Booking Process 1.0 and the Bill of Lading 2.0; Provides Website for Public Feedback on Beta Releases • Beta releases ini ate three-month period of public review and feedback for eDocumenta on standards AMSTERDAM: Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), a neutral, non-profit group established to further digitalisation of container shipping technology standards, in conjunction with its nine member carriers, has published beta releases of DCSA Standards for the Booking Process 1.0 and the Bill of Lading 2.0. In conjunction with these releases, the company unveiled a website where interested parties can go to review and provide feedback on beta versions of DCSA standards. The website is available at www.dcsa.org/feedback. The publication of booking process standards is the second step towards end-to-end digitalisation of the shipping documentation process after the publication of DCSA electronic bill of lading (eBL) standards. DCSA Standards for the Booking Process 1.0 will enable frictionless sharing of digitised shipping data, eliminating the need to rekey booking information into the eBL. DCSA Standards for the Bill of Lading 2.0 are aligned with DCSA booking process standards to enable automatic uptake of booking process data. As part of DCSA’s multi-year eDocumentation initiative, today’s publications bring the industry closer to a standardised, universally accepted electronic bill of lading, which will increase efficiency, enhance transparency, facilitate compliance and eliminate paper from international trade. Through this initiative, DCSA aims to facilitate acceptance and adoption of eBL by regulators, banks and insurers and to unify communication between these organisations and customers, carriers and all other stakeholders involved in a transaction. The DCSA Feedback Website Also announced, the DCSA feedback website will allow a three-month public review and feedback period for DCSA beta release standards. Contributors simply select the standard they would like to review and choose from four types of comment: • Suggest a change

• Suggest a clarification • Suggest an addition • Other Once the review period is ended, DCSA will revise the standards based on input from the site and release new versions within a three-month timeframe. Standards release documentation The standards publications released today comprise the following documents: DCSA Standard for the Booking Process 1.0 beta, DCSA Standard for the Bill of Lading 2.0 beta, the DCSA Interface Standard for the Booking Process, the DCSA Interface Standard for the Bill of Lading, and the associated DCSA Industry Blueprint and DCSA Information Model. All documents are immediately available to download for free on the DCSA website. To facilitate implementation and compliance, API definitions are published on SwaggerHub, and a reference implementation is available on GitHub. Subsequent releases of DCSA’s eDocumentation initiative will include data and process standards for arrival notice and release shipment. “In 2021, only 1.2% of the bills of lading issued by carriers was digital,” commented Thomas Bagge, CEO of DCSA . “Fortunately, this leaves much room for improvement of the B/L process, which will have a significant and positive impact on international trade. Eliminating paper each year will improve sustainability, and digitising documents will increase the accuracy and availability of digital data, which will benefit everyone along the supply chain, including customs organisations. The public and private sectors must work together to address legal and technical interoperability issues if we want to grow eBL usage. We are encouraged to see top level government initiatives designed to drive standards adoption and data exchange across the globe, such as the recently announced FLOW (Freight Logistics Optimization Works) initiative from the Biden Administration.”

Adani Ports handles highest ever monthly cargo in March 2022 AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited ("APSEZ") has announced about the operational performance for the period ended March 31, 2022. Key milestones (March 2022) • Adani Ports handled highest ever monthly cargo of 29.16 MMT in March 2022 implying a YoY growth of 12% and MoM growth of 21%. Key milestones (Fy2022) Ports: • Highest ever cargo of 312.39 MMT, which is a growth of 26% YoY. All-time high handling of containers, coking coal, edible oil, chemicals, crude, POL, and steel. • Accelerated growth for incremental 100 MMT of cargo throughput by achieving it in just three years, while the previous 100 MMT was achieved in five years and the initial 100 MMT was achieved in 14 years.

• Record Container Volume of 8.2 mn TEUs, which is a growth of 14% YoY. For the year, the dry cargo share is at 50.5%, container at 38%, liquid including crude at 11% and gas at 0.5% • Operating ports portfolio expanded to 12 ports with addition of Gangavaram. FY22 has seen a life-time record performance for Mundra, Dhamra, Ennore, Tuna, and Hazira. • The cargo volume share of nonMundra ports jumps to 52% from 42% last year. Also, the cargo volume share of east coast ports increased to 38% vs 26% last year. Mundra Port: • Reached a distinct milestone of crossing 150 MMT of cargo volume in a year, which is the highest among all ports in India. • Reinforced its premier container terminal position in India by handling 6.5 mn TEUs, a growth of 15% YoY. • Handled record 18789 trains, a

growth of 19% YoY, implying an improved rail co-efficient and environmentally friendly operations with lower carbon footprint. Logistics: • Highest ever rail volumes of 403,000 TEUs, a growth of 29% YoY. • Added 14 new rakes taking the total count to 75 rakes. • Bulk rake movement (under GPWIS) has witnessed strong growth with 8.7 MMT of cargo transported, which is a growth of 98% YoY. • Six Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) are now operational, including the new MMLP at Nagpur and resumption of operations at Kilaraipur (Ludhiana). Constr uction also commenced at three more MMLPs namely Virochannagar, Taloja and Panipat. • AdaniAgri logistics commenced development of five new projects adding a total of 250,000 MT, a growth of 28% to its overall capacity.

India's wheat exports hit 7.85 MT in fiscal year to March, an all-time high NEW DELHI: India's wheat exports hit 7.85 million tonnes in the fiscal year to March, an all-time high and a sharp increase from 2.1 million tonnes in the previous year, traders said, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine cuts off rival Black Sea supplies. Earlier this month, a top government official said India would export a record 7 million tonnes of wheat in the 2021-22 fiscal year as a rally in global prices gave the world's second biggest producer of the grain an opportunity to gain market share. India achieved its target of exporting 7 million tonnes of wheat on March 21, according to the Indian government, which is yet to issue wheat shipment

data for the last 10 days of March. Traders said wheat shipments, including cargoes sold to neighbouring Bangladesh by land, totalled 7.85 million tonnes in 2021-22, surpassing the target of 7 million and indicating robust exports in the 2022-23 fiscal year that began on April 1. Other than Bangladesh, India exported wheat to South Korea, Sri Lanka, Oman and Qatar, among others, traders said. Most export deals were signed at between $225 and $335 a tonne free on board, they said. "Business has been very brisk, and both Mundra and Deendayal Port have been very busy handling outbound wheat cargoes," said Rajesh Paharia

G-RIDE, a joint

venture between the government of Gujarat and Ministry of Railways is focused at developing rail projects and infrastructure in the state. Saurashtra, so far, doesn’t has an ICD or a rail terminal for movement of cargo, hence all the exports and imports are being managed from Mundra Port, Deendayal Port and Pipavav Port. Movement of cargo from

Saurashtra to these ports takes place through road. Every month, about 4000 containers are exported and 1500 containers are imported into Saurashtra. In 2015, CONCOR had signed an agreement with the state government during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit to develop an ICD at Rajkot, but this project has not taken off yet.

Sugar export may touch 85 lakh tonne this year: ISMA NEW DELHI: India’s sugar export may touch 85 lakh tonne in the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year ending September, as per the estimates of global trade houses, industry body ISMA said on Monday. While the country has contracted 72 lakh tonne of sugar export, the physical exports have been around 56-57 lakh tonne till March-end this year, it said. Sugar marketing year runs from O c t o b e r t o S e p t e m b e r. C r u s h i n g operation is still on as 366 mills were operating till March-end, while 152 mills had stopped the crushing. Releasing the latest sugar production figures, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said: “News from the international trade

houses indicate that global market is expecting 85 lakh tonne of sugar exports from India, in the current season.” According to the industry body, sugar production reached 309.87 lakh tonne till March of the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year, higher than 278.71 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are the top three sugar producing states in the country. As per the ISMA data, sugar production in Maharasthra rose to 118.81 lakh tonne till March from 100.47 lakh tonne in the year-ago period.In Uttar Pradesh, sugar production remained lower at 87.50 lakh tonne till March this year compared with 93.71 lakh tonne in

the year-ago period. Sugar output in Karnataka, the country’s third-largest sugar-producing state, rose substantially to 57.65 lakh tonne till March as against 42.38 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. On the ethanol front, ISMA said against the total Letter of Intent (LoI) for supply of 416.33 crore litres, 131.69 crore litres of ethanol have been supplied as on March 27 this year. Contracted quantity as on date is 402.66 crore litres as against LoIs of about 416 crore litres issued by oil marketing companies, it said. The country on an average has achieved a blending percentage of 9.60 per cent between December 2021 and March 2022, it added.

The move is akin to that of other steel manufacturers who are betting big on captive ports and shipping to reduce logistics costs. The Naveen Jindal-led company’s Rs 2,392-crore bid following a tender floated by State-owned Paradip Port Authority to build a 25-million tonne (mt) capacity dry bulk cargo terminal at the western dock of the port was adjudged the winner. The company is now awaiting an official letter, which is expected anytime soon. “Today, JSPL is exporting about 3 million tonne of goods from India every year, while our imports including coking coal, steel coal and limestone amount to about 8 million tonne. We move this 11 million tonne through six ports — Haldia, Dhamra, Paradip, G o p a l p u r, V i s a k h a p a t n a m a n d Gangavaram — which is a mammoth logistics task,” JSPL Managing Director VR Sharma said. “So, we decided to have our own port and jetty. This would help in easing our operations. Today we are producing 9 million tonne, which will rise to 15 million by in 2025,” he added.

Following the development of the port, the company would “save a lot” on freight rates and time as Paradip Port is close to its Angul and Raigarh plants. According to an analyst tracking the sector, JSPL’s move would help it synergise port operations with its manufacturing facilities, apart from the cost savings that include transportation charges. Steel firms without presence in ports, through group companies, would also look at making similar investments in the near future. JSW Steel, the flagship company of industrialist Sajjan Jindal-controlled diversified JSW Group, also has a similar strategy. To reduce logistics cost for JSW Steel, the group had set up port operation through JSW Infrastructure, which is now ranked among the top five port companies in the country. It operates seven port facilities across the eastern, western and southern regions. JSW Steel moves nearly 4 tonne of inputs — coking coal, iron ore, thermal coal and limestone, among others — to produce one tonne of steel. “By setting up our own shipping and logistics system we were able to bring down cost by 20-30%. This model is giving us a good advantage, and inland shipping would be the model for moving

goods within the country,” JSW Steel joint MD & group chief financial officer SeshagiriRao MVS said. At present, JSW Infrastructure owns 110 mt of cargo handling capacity across ports including Jaigarh Port (Maharashtra), Dharamtar, Goa and Paradip. About 60% of this capacity is utilised by JSW Steel and JSW Energy, and the balance 40% is serviced by third-party customers. The company uses barges for inland transportation such as moving goods f r o m Pa r a d i p t o J a i g a r h . J S W Infrastructure used to take barges on rent, and now has begun procuring its own barges to further reduce logistics costs, Rao added. According to SumangalNevatia, senior vice-president at Kotak Securities: “These companies have attractive expansion opportunities in steel and for steel-making they need to import a lot of raw materials including coking coal. At the same time these companies are also looking to expand their flat products portfolio, which have very strong export opportunities”. “Both for raw material and product sales, port access is a strategic investment. It is integration of the business from a long-term perspective,” he added.

New Mangalore Port registers 7.66% growth in 2021-22 MANGALORE: New Mangalore Port handled 39.30 million tonnes of cargo during 2021-22 as against 36.50 million tonnes handled in the previous year registering a 7.66% growth, while the all India growth rate stands at 6.94%. New Mangalore Port Authority Chairman A.V. Ramana told reporters here on Monday that 28.7 million tonnes out of the total throughput of 39.30 million tonnes was captive cargo handled by MRPL, UPCL, KIOCL and JSW and the balance 10.59 million tonnes was non-captive cargo. The increase was mainly due to increased handling of crude, POL products, coal, edible oil and containers. Container handling has witnessed a steady growth with the port handling 1.52 lakh containers as against 1.5 lakh containers the previous fiscal, while a

record sugar was (2.56 lakh tonnes) imported surpassing the earlier record of 36,947 tonnes in 2019.20. Bitumen handling (2.99 lakh tonnes) too was a record as against 2.06 lakh tonnes the previous year. The port also handled 69,500 tonnes of new cargo — bulk industrial salt — in April last. Mr. Ramana said the Port handled the highest parcel size during the fiscal when MV Great Qin called at the Port on May 10, 2021 with 1.13 lakh tonnes of steam coal on Berth 16. The earlier record was 1.07 lakh tonneshandledin April 2013. It also handled five Naval vessels carrying 370 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen in containers to combat COVID -19. Handling of 1,521 TEU containers of raw cashew from Africa in June 2021 through MV SSL Brahmaputra-V.084 was the highest parcel size of containers handled at the Port.

T h e y i n c l u d e upgradation of platforms 2 and 3 in the Port Marshalling Yard; upgradation of railway lines 1 and 2 in the Marshalling Yard; construction of deep draft Berth 18, now numbered 16; installation of RFID tags for goods vehicles entering the port; stack yard and ancillary roads for parking Ro-Ro cargo; Mobile X-ray Container Scanner and mechanisation of Berth 16 on PPP for bulk cargo. Deputy Chairman K.G. Nath and Traffic Manager Y.R. Belagal and others were present.

US Consul General visits Cochin Port, offers support in development projects C O C H I N : D r. M . B e e n a , Chairperson of the Cochin Port Trust, along with senior officials, hosted Judith Ravin, Consul General of the United States of America, US Consulate General Chennai, on Monday, 4th April, at the Cochin Port. Welcoming the Consul General, Dr.Beena spoke of the strategic importance of the port as a maritime gateway to peninsular India and the prominent role played by it in contributing to the economy of Kerala. She also shared details of the infrastructure development initiatives of the port taken up under the Sagarmala project of the Government of India and the potential the port offered for investors in the US to partner in the port development projects under the Sagarmala and Maritime India Vision.

A communication from the port trust said it was highlighted that the port was offering zero tariff for mainline container vessel services to the US east coast. The g r o w t h o f t h e transhipment volume at the ICTT, Vallarpadam, and the potential of the Cochin Port to grow as the transhipment hub of the region, were also highlighted during the discussions. Ms.Ravin appreciated the strategic development initiatives and the business model of the Cochin Port and promised to share the information with stakeholders. She also conveyed the willingness of the consulate to associate with the port development projects through private partners from the US. She also agreed to help promote

cruise tourism, the communication said. The Consul General was accompanied by Scott Hartmann, Cultural Affairs Officer (US Consulate General, Chennai) and Mr. Nelson K. Paul, Press and Media Coordinator. Senior officials from the port, who joined the discussions, included Vipin R. Menoth, Traffic Manager, and S.K. Sahu, Financial Adviser and Chief Accounts Officer.

Shanghai Port sees normal operation, no backlog of Container ships SHANGHAI: The Port of Shanghai, the world’s largest, has been operating as usual and the port has not seen a backlog of container ships since February, the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) said couple of days earlier, in response to recent media reports claiming the port is suffering from serious delays and worsening congestion due to the city’s pandemic flare-up. All production units at the port are operating 24 hours a day unless affected by extreme weather, SIPG said. It stressed that it has implemented the close-loop management at the port and enforced anti-pandemic measures in a “swift and strict manner” to guarantee the port’s safety till the containment of the latest coronavirus outbreak, and to maintainthe stability of industrial chains in both the Yangtze River Delta region and globally. Since March 28, the average waiting

hour for container ships to be docked at Shanghai Port is less than 24 hours, and the number of ships waiting to load or discharge at the port is less than 10 vessels, which shows the docking efficiency has significantly improved from that of 2021, SIPG said. According to a report by thepaper.cn on Sunday, the average waiting hour for container ships in Asian ports, based on data from leading logistics companies like Maersk, is one to two days when faced with acoronavirus flare-up, which means the average waiting hour in Shanghai Port is shorter than some ports located in southern and northern coasts of China. SIPG said that the logistics efficiency at the Shanghai Port does being affected to a certain extent in recent days as truck drivers need to show negative nucleic acid testing results to carry out crossprovince transportation. But the group has optimized a set of collecting and

optimizing mechanism to alleviate the situation. For example, it has helped the shipping containers ship back empty containers in non-peak time in advance, while encouraged clients to deliver containers via shipping and railway, rather than land transportation which is more vulnerable to the pandemic. Shanghai Port is the world’s largest container port, with container throughout reaching 47.03 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) last year. It also handles 17 percent of China’s total port volume, serving as a barometer of China’s foreign trade and logistics chain. Some foreign media recently claimed, falsely, that the number of ships waiting to load or discharge cargo at the Port of Shanghai had “skyrocketed to more than 300 this week, a near fivefold increase in the past two and half weeks.”

Cosco Shipping Ports' 2021 Net Prot edges up 2.1% to U$354.7mn SHANGHAI: Port operator Cosco Shipping Ports posted a net profit of US$354.7 million in 2021, a slight increase of 2.1 per cent over the previous year. Revenue surged 21 per cent to $1.21 billion with solid growth from most of its terminals, as global trade recovered from the pandemic's hit, while shipping fees surged on tight shipping capacity and port congestion. Cosco said in a statement that the bottom-line growth was in part slowed down by lower disposal gains in 2021. Excluding one-off disposal profits' impact, profit rose 24 per cent. In 2022, the company expects a slowdown in China's foreign trade, which has boosted its strong growth in the past year, as other countries resume local production. In 2021, as pandemic-related supply disruptions lingered, many overseas countries increased imports from China, where manufacturing activities largely remained normal due to the country's "zero-infection" policy. Total throughput of the Greater China region increased by 4.1 per cent year on year to 99,275,231 TEU in 2021 (2020:95,380,835 TEU) and accounted for 76.8 per cent of the Group's total. The Yangtze River Delta region volume increased by 4.5 per cent to 15,436,773 TEU in 2021 (2020: 14,768,442 TEU) and accounted for 11.9 per cent of the group's total. Shanghai Pudong International Container Terminals Limited and Shanghai Mingdong Container Terminals Limited secured some ad-hoc shipping calls, and the throughput increased by 6.4 per cent and 9.6 per cent to 2,600,511 TEU and 6,845,534 TEU respectively (2020: 2,443,406 TEU and 6,246,932 TEU). Southeast Coast region throughput increased by 12.9 per cent to 6,149,785 TEU in 2021 (2020: 5,445,662 TEU) and accounted for 4.8 per cent of the group's total, while the

Pearl River Delta throughput of the Pearl River Delta region increased by 3.4 per cent to 28,841,688 TEU in 2021 (2020: 27,898,470 TEU) and accounted for 22.3 per cent the group's total. Driven by the increase in the US, EU and empty cargoes, the throughput of Yantian Terminals increased by 6.1 per cent 14,161,034 TEU (2020: 13,348,546 TEU). Total throughput of the Southwest Coast region increased by 11.7 per cent to 6,011,800 TEU in 2021 (2020: 5,383,701 TEU) and accounted for 4.6 per cent of the group's total, which was mainly benefited from the increased trade activities between China and Southeast Asia. The total throughput of its overseas ports increased by 5.5 per cent to 30,011,144 TEU in 2021 (2020: 28,443,740 TEU) and accounted for 23.2 per cent of the group's total. Due to the continuous congestion of major ports in northwest Europe, CSP Zeebrugge Terminal became an important buffer port for the region and, together with the addition of new routes, its throughput increased by 52.9 per cent to 931,447 TEU (2020: 609,277 TEU). As result of new routes and the significant increase in local cargoes due to the increased ability to connect to the cargo hinterland, the throughput of CSP Spain related companies increased by 6.9 per cent to 3,621,188 TEU (2020: 3,387,820 TEU). "Looking forward to 2022, despite the complex and uncertain global macro environment, the resilience of China's economic development, the strong domestic market, a sound supply system and the coming into force of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership ("RCEP") will provide support to China's economy and the long-term economic fundamentals will remain unchanged," the company said.
