JNPT observed a week-long Vigilance Awareness Week NAVI MUMBAI: : Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s No.1 Container Port, Observed a week-long Vigilance Awareness Week at JNPT headquarters from 27th October to 2th November, 2020. During this week various competitions like Essay writing, Slogan Writing and Elocution took were organised for JNPT employees. All employees took pledge on 27th October, 2020 at 11.00 am., on 30th October, 2020. An interactive meeting was held with Port Users on 30th October, 2020. A workshop on “Cartel Bid rigging Competitive Procurement was conducted by Shri Anil Ramteke, C h i e f V i g i l a n c e O f  c e r o n 2 3 r d O c t o b e r, 2 0 2 0 . Shri Arun Mehta, IRSS was invited as Guest Faculty for the workshop on Legal aspects of Procurement and Do’s and Dont’s of Procurement and works. Apart from this, JNPT also organised narratives on “Vigilant India, Prosperous India”(सतक भारत समृ भारत)” on one of the top radio channels, namely Radio Mirchi, Radio City, Red FM, and Big FM on 29th, 30th, 31st October, 2020 and 2nd November, 2020 respectively. The eventful week ended on 2nd November with a valedictory function, held at JNPT Training Centre. Prizes were announced to winners of various competitions. India’s trade decit in October narrows to $8.78 bn, Exports fall 5% NEW DELHI: India’s exports in October fell 5.4% to $24.82 billion, as compared to $26.23 billion in October 2019, according to the government data. Exports during April-October 2020-21 were $150.07 billion, exhibiting a decline of 19.05% over the same period last year, it added. Additionally, imports in October declined 11.56% to $33.6 billion, as compared to $37.99 billion in October 2019. Merchandise imports during AprilOctober 2020-21 were $182.29 billion, as compared to $286.07 billion during the same period last year, exhibiting a negative growth of 36.28%, government stated. Consequentially, India’s trade deficit for the month of October narrowed to $8.78 billion, as compared to trade deficit of $11.76 billion, an improvement by 25.34%. The value of non-petroleum exports was $23.21 billion, registering a positive growth of 1.84% over October 2019. Nonpetroleum and non-gems and jewellery

exports stood $20.28 billion, as compared to $19.07 billion in the corresponding month, registering a positive growth of 6.34%. The cumulative value of nonpetroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports in April- October 2020-21 was $124.79 billion, as compared to $137.72 billion for the corresponding period in 2019-20, exhibiting a decrease of 9.39%. Oil imports were $5.98 billion, as compared to $9.73 billion in October 2019, a decline by 38.52%. Oil imports in AprilOctober 2020-21 were $37.84 billion, as compared to $74.93 billion, showing a decline of 49.5%. Non-oil imports in October 2020 were estimated at $27.62 billion, as compared to $28.26 billion in October 2019, showing a decline of 2.26%. Non-oil imports in AprilOctober 2020-21 were $144.45 billion, as compared to $211.14 billion, registering a decline of 31.59% during the same period of the last year.

Gold imports were $22.83 billion, recording a negative growth of 8.31%, as compared to non-oil and non-gold imports of $24.9 billion in October 2019. Non-oil and nongold imports were $126.97 billion in AprilOctober 2020-21, recording a negative growth of 29.28%, as compared to non-oil and non-gold imports of $179.55 billion in AprilOctober 2019-20. Since March, the exports were recording negative growth due to COVID19 pandemic and sluggish global demand. However, in September, exports rose for the first time in seven months with merchandise exports registering a 6% growth—higher than 5.3%, driven mostly by an increase in demand for engineering goods, petroleum products, pharmaceuticals and readymade garments. Exports rose to $27.6 billion, while imports contracted 19.6% to $30.3 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $2.7 billion, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry.

October exports show a nominal negative growth of 5.4% due to supply side challenges with signs of revival as both order booking position and Manufacturing PMI have risen: FIEO NEW DELHI: Reacting to October 2020 export figures, FIEO President, Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf said that though the monthly exports have shown a nominal single-digit negative growth of 5.4 percent with USD 24.82 billion, there are signs of revival as both order booking position and the September Manufacturing PMI have risen. Gradual lifting of lockdowns across the country has also led to the increase in Manufacturing PMI to its highest level in over a decade. FIEO President also said that the nominal decline in exports during the month has been mainly because of the huge container shortage and hike in sea freight which has upset exports particularly for those who have negotiated on CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) or C&F (Cost & Freight) basis. Besides, farmers agitation in some of the hinterland states have affected exports during October. Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf added that it is expected as the election process gets over in the US with the upcoming Christmas and New Year season, both the global and India economy are slated for

economic revival. Exporters have continuously been receiving a lot of enquiries and orders further adding to the positive sentiments with signals of further resilience in the global supply chain. FIEO Chief said that the exports of agri products & other cereals along with iron ore, carpet, ceramic products & glassware, drugs & pharmaceuticals, handicrafts excluding handmade carpet, meat, dairy & poultry products, jute mfg. including floor covering, mica, coal & other ores, minerals including process, cotton yarn/fabs/madeups, handloom products etc., RMG of all textiles and organic & inorganic chemicals showed either a very high or impressive growth or were in positive territory showing signs of further revival. Reduction in exports of major products including petroleum products, gems & jewellery and leather & leather manufacturers which are major constituents in India’s export basket has also been a key concern during the recent months, which needs to be analysed. However, reduction in imports during October 2020 by 11.56 percent to USD 33.60 billion compared to the same period during

the previous fiscal led to a trade deficit of just USD 8.78 billion with a substantial decline of 25.34 percent during the month. Mr Saraf further added that rise in import of precious metals including Gold and Pearls, Precious & Semi-Precious Stones used as raw material for gems & jewellery product exports does augur well for this major labour-intensive sector of exports, which has been reeling under immense pressure since the country’s exports started showing negative growth. FIEO President reiterated that the urgent and immediate need of the hour is to address some of the key issues including adequate availability of containers, softening of freight charges, the release of the MEIS benefits, resolving risky exporters issues, immediate introduction of RoDTEP across all sectors, removal of capping of Rs 2 crore MEIS per IEC, introduction of NIRVIK Scheme, long pending demand for the creation of Export Development Fund and various other infrastructure bottlenecks with regard to customs and port clearances, will further help in reviving the exports during these difficult and torrid times.

India’s Container shortage to start easing by mid-Nov: Adani Ports CEO MUMBAI: Container availability in India is likely to start easing by midNovember with growth in imports, the CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone said Nov. 3 on a quarterly earnings call. “ We d o e x p e c t t h a t c o n t a i n e r availability will increase further in quarter three as imports start increasing in the c o u n t r y. We a l r e a d y s e e s i g n s o f repositioning of containers happening at our ports, so we do expect this easing up

happening by mid of this month,” Karan Adani said. India, along with other major Asian markets, has been facing an acute shortage of containers for the last six months due to a skewed import-export ratio and supply chain disruptions in the wake of COVID 19-related lockdowns. Historically, imports have accounted for 60% of container volumes in the country and exports for the rest. That trend was reversed in the July-September quarter when exports were around 55%-

60% of total container volumes and imports were smaller, Adani said. The rise in exports was predominantly because of pent-up demand — Imports did not stop when the lockdown was in place but exports did. “So, we saw demand on the export side when the country opened up and the factories started again,” Adani said. However, normalcy is likely to return in the current quarter and container volumes were expected to touch to preCOVID-19 levels by the end of the year, he said.

The company can increase this availability, within short notice and can significantly expand capacity over a short period to meet evolving domestic and global demands. Snowman have also mapped other cold storage operators with whom the company can partner on a need basis. This can further help Snowman to create similar amount of space, if required.

Snowman is already managing vaccine distribution of Influenza/swine flu and Typhoid vaccines. This experience of ours will come handy while managing covid19 vaccine storage and distribution, stated Sunil Nair, CEO, Snowman Logistics. We can dedicate close to 200 trucks for this purpose, nationally” “The task is mammoth, as it is not just about vaccine, but associated ancillary kits (syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, etc.) should also be distributed concurrently. This will need robust distribution planning and involvement of multiple players.” Sunil added. India has opportunity to get ahead in Global Supply Chain reconfiguration race: KPMG report MUMBAI: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the dismantling of global supply chains as countries imposed lockdowns, exposing the reliance of businesses around the world on a few markets for fulfilling their manufacturing and sourcing requirements, a KPMG report said According to the report titled ”supply chains post COVID-19”, India has a unique opportunity to adopt a more inclusive and proactive role in leveraging its vast pool of skilled resources, competitive costing and developed eco-system for select sectors to get ahead in the global supply chain reconfiguration race. The report suggests that a more realistic approach for many companies looking to realign supply chains would be to consider a ”China + n” strategy to their future course of action. This allows for a non-linear consideration of global trade, more in the nature of production networks with multidimensional value accretion phases rather than sequential links in a chain. “We, therefore, expect a de-emphasis on efficiency and the lowest cost dominant determinants, in favour of an interdependent, ecosystem-based value framework that assigns more equal weight to risk exposure,

supply alternatives, tax considerations, and channel complexity,” said the report. India has a favourable business environment and liberal FDI norms; Constantly improving Ease of Doing Business rankings, enormous consumer base and rapidly improving digital infrastructure, outlined the report. Moreover, the country is home to the second-largest digital citizenry in the world, after China, with a reported 718.74 million internet users. As per KPMG in India’s analysis, India is set to be home to a billion digital users by 2028. The report highlights critical sectors that India must focus on to realise the opportunities presented by the global supply chain reconfiguration. These include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, automotive and telecom, among others. India is well-positioned to be an alternate source of supply to the global chemical industry with permission for 100 per cent FDI in the sector, dedicated investment zones, availability of raw materials and a large domestic talent pool, said the report. Besides, the country’s pharmaceutical industry has progressed strongly and today is one of the largest

generic suppliers to the global markets. In the telecom sector, India has plenty of enabling factors that should prove attractive to foreign investors considering the country as a destination for their manufacturing plants. These include a phased manufacturing programme to promote the domestic production of mobile handsets, a subsidy in SEZs, among others. Besides, the success of domestic and multinational auto component players in India over the years, lends robust, credible support for positioning the country as a reliable partner in global auto supply chains. The Automotive Mission Plan 2016-26 targets 3x growth for the automotive industry and aims to establish India as a manufacturing base and an export hub. India, UAE agree to explore ways to facilitate investments NEW DELHI: India and the UAE has agreed to explore ways to facilitate investments in key sectors with a view to strengthen economic ties between the two countries. The two sides agreed that the recent challenging circumstances of COVID-19 made it even more important to encourage investment and cooperation in areas of mutual interest with the purpose of stimulating economic activity. With an aim to further strengthen trade and economic ties, both sides reiterated the importance of addressing specific perceived barriers to trade between the two countries, an official

statement said. These include issues relating to anti-dumping duties and measures, as well as any tariff and regulatory restrictions, it added. The two sides agreed to coordinate efforts and promote mutual cooperation at the highest official levels in areas of antidumping and to consider these issues promptly with the objective of seeking mutually beneficial solutions, it said. The discussions were held during the eighth meeting of the India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments. They agreed upon the need to further explore ways to facilitate investments in key Indian and UAE sectors with potential

for economic growth, and to maintain their dialogue and further build on the considerable achievements of the Joint Task Force, the statement said. The Indian side agreed to look into these issues with the objective of facilitating further direct investments of the UAE-based funds into India and seeking mutually beneficial solutions in that regard, it added. The meeting was co-chaired by Piyush Goyal, Commerce and Industry Minister and Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Senior officials from both the countries were also present.

Rajat Kumar. Having been in service for 34 years, today, the shipping community has lost one of its true stalwarts, and his absence will be felt by the entire industry. Phased roll-out for Certified Pick up in the Port of Antwerp ANTWERP: The digital, secure and integrated solution called ‘Certified Pick up’ will soon replace the existing system of PIN codes for the release of containers in the Port of Antwerp. A phased approach means that all logistics partners in the port supply chain will be able to implement this new process. In phase one, the platform will create transparency on the container status and in a subsequent phase the various supply-chain partners will switch to a new processing method based on identity. More secure, transparent and efcient To pick up a container at the terminal in the port today, you need a unique PIN code. There is considerable time between the shipping company being informed of the PIN code and the truck driver actually entering this PIN code on the terminal. The PIN code is also passed between different parties, which increases the risk of abuse. To make this process more secure, transparent and efficient, a new process for the release of containers, referred to as “Certified Pick up” (CPu), will be enforced on 1 January 2021. Cpu is a neutral, central data platform in which all stakeholders involved in the container import process are connected. Phased approach Together with the Port Authority it has been agreed to phase the implementation of CPu as from 1 January 2021. In the first phase the CPu platform will allow transparency on the container status, aimed at increasing the operational efficiency for every player in the chain. The various container statuses, related to the collection of a container in the Port of Antwerp, will be displayed as “green lights”. The supply-chain partners will be able to view the commercial release, the customs release and terminal release of the containers under their control. In exchange for this information, chain partners will later be required to add relevant supply-chain data, such as anticipated collection time, terms, etc. The current process of PIN codes will still be kept in this phase. In the next phase, the various chain partners will switch over to a new processing method, namely collection based on identity. The current process using a PIN code to collect a container will be

phased out and replaced by a digital process of release entitlement then pick up entitlement and an authorised collection based on identity. In collaboration with logistics parties Port of Antwerp is choosing an active approach to getting everyone involved in the roll-out of CPu on time. The shipping companies and Antwerp terminals will be first to connect on the CPu platform, after which other stakeholders, such as freight forwarders and transporters will connect as from 1 January 2021 to see the status of various containers. NxtPort, the logistical data platform at the Port of Antwerp, will provide the CPu platform. They have set up the efficient support, which will guarantee the continuity of the Port of Antwerp (with regard to container imports). To maximize the reach of CPu, it is also possible for 3rd parties to link their own applications with CPu. Pricing A fee will be charged to those using the port, in order to use Certified Pick up. These charges, which will apply as from 1 January 2021, comprise a fixed charge for the API/EDI connection or use of the web interface on the one hand, and, on the other hand, a variable fee per processed container, which is divided into three equal parts between the shipping company, terminal and the first authorised party in the collection process.
