Sagarmala to be growth engine for Ports : Sarbananda Sonowal All Major Ports in the Country will be developed and modernised to reduce the turnaround me for cargo and make them compe ve globally NEW DELHI : Union MoPSW Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has said that the Sagarmala Project will be the growth engine for the ports, especially the Major Ports in the Country. Addressing the media recently, he said that Sagarmala project had taken the cargo handling in the Country from 16 million tonnes to 105 million tonnes. “A goal of completion of the project has been set for 2035. More than 50 new sectors have been included in the project.

The project cost has also gone up from Rs. 5 lakh crore to Rs. 6.79 lakh crore,” said the Union Minister. According to him, all the all Major Ports in the Country will be developed and modernised to reduce the turnaround time for cargo and make them competitive globally. Mr. Sonowal said, “Sagarmala project encompasses Government sectors, State and private sector. We have to compete with the private players,” he said.

ONE announces signing of Ship Building Contracts for Ten Very Large Container Ships SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. has signed ship building contracts with both Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. to construct 5 vessels each, adding a total of ten modern Very Large Container Ships (VLCS) to ONE’s fleet. These ships have a nominal capacity of more than 13,700TEU and are to be delivered in 2025. This investment embodies ONE’s Midterm Strategy announced in March, to safeguard a sustainable supply chain for the future and underscore ONE’s green strategy and decarbonization plan. The vessels are designed with the highest

efficiency standards as well as a variety of cuttingedge technology to reduce navigational impacts to the environment and are planned for the "Ready notation" or "AiP (Approval in Principle)" of Ammonia and Methanol as fuel, Carbon Capture and Storage. Moreover, this fleet will enable ONE to broaden the exploration of long-term alternative fuels and decarbonization technologies in the future. ONE is determined to become a leader in maritime decarbonization and remains fully committed to achieving sustainable marine transportation by achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The company will continue to make necessary investments in greener assets and technologies, whilst engaging in open collaboration with industry stakeholders.

Essar Ports Vizag Terminal poised for a strong FY23 Boos ng India’s Steel Sector and enabling AatmaNirbhar Bharat • Records 1.3 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) throughput for April’ 22 i.e. run rate in excess of 14 MMT • Records 12.7 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) throughput for FY 21 – 22 • Records single largest parcel of 1,65,000 Tonnes of iron ore fines in April’ 22 • Handled 1511 rakes and 193 vessels in the FY 21 – 22 MUMBAI: Essar Vizag Terminal Limited (EVTL) operating India’s largest Ore Handling Complex in Visakhapatnam Port has recorded ~1.3 MMT of cargo handling for April’ 22 i.e. a run rate in excess of 14 MMT for FY 22 – 23 suggesting a growth of ~10% on an annualized basis. For FY 21–22, EVTL has handled a cargo of 12.7 MMT. The surge in traffic marks the uptick in Indian Steel Sector which has been a major contributor to India's manufacturing output. EVTL handled 193 vessels and 1511 rakes in FY 21–22. It also achieved a monthly record of handling 171 rakes in March 2022. In April’ 22, M/s EVTL created another milestone by successfully loading a record 1,65,000 Metric Tons (MT) of Iron ore Fines on M.V. STAR ELINI Vessel – the largest ever parcel loaded and to call at Visakhapatnam Port. M r. R a j i v A g a r w a l , O p e r a t i n g P a r t n e r (Infrastructure), Essar and Managing Director, Essar Ports, said, “The performance of Vizag Terminal is a testimony of our commitment to offer world class assets and services with technology at the core. Our facilities are conceptualized to give a sustainable advantage to our customers and trade. Our investments are a reflection of Essar’s ESG philosophy and an approach that places people before profits.” Essar Ports has been a pioneer in investing in technologies and developing environment-friendly and efficient handling systems. EVTL‘s fully mechanised ecofriendly infrastructure delivers a performance which can be benchmarked with the best across the globe, while also enabling lower logistics’ cost for customers. All technological advancements have been done keeping the company’s ESG philosophy in mind and putting people before profits. The port has excellent connectivity through rail, road and air routes and the allweather deep draft facility has the capacity to serve the rapidly growing markets of South-East Asia, including China, Japan and Korea. EVTL, the 24 MMTPA iron-ore export terminal at

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is the largest iron ore handling complex in India. The terminal is strategically located in the Bay of Bengal in close proximity to Iron-ore mines located in Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha and Jharkhand.

Exports of Intermediate Goods (IG) continues growth in Q4 2021 : WTO World exports of intermediate goods (IGs) con nued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2021, increasing by 21 per cent year on year, according to a WTO report GENEVA: World I G e x p o r t s increased by 21 per cent year on year in the fourth quarter of 2021, continuing the upward trend o b s e r v e d throughout the year. However, growth was slower than the 27 per cent recorded in Q3 and the 47 per cent in Q2. The pace of trade in IGs, which range from crops used in food production to textiles and metals needed to produce goods, is an indicator of the level of activity in supply chains. “Other industrial supplies”, comprising manufacturing inputs such as metal structures, electrical conductors and medical and pharma products, continued to be the key driver of growth, with a year-on-year increase of 31 per cent in Q4. World exports of food and beverage products grew slightly less, recording 23 per cent growth in the fourth quarter compared with 28 per cent in Q3. Ores and precious stones saw

growth of 10 per cent in Q4, down from 13 per cent in Q3 and 40 per cent in Q2, mainly due to persistently decreasing iron ore prices. Asian and African exports of industrial inputs to supply chains increased by more than 24 per cent year on year in Q4, while European exports of inputs grew by 18 per cent. North America's IG exports grew by 14.5 per cent, largely driven by exports of soybeans to China. However, South and Central America saw IG exports decrease by 12 per cent, mainly due to a reduction in Brazilian exports of iron ores and soybeans to China.

China continued to be the top IG exporter in Q4 in terms of value, exporting products with a value of US$ 418 billion. Among the top 15 IG exporters in Q4 2021, the highest growth was recorded by Belgium (39 per cent) and the United Kingdom (34 per cent). Malaysia joined the list of the top 15, registering year-on-year growth of 28 per cent, with three-quarters of its domestically produced inputs shipped to Asian partners. Top IG importers in Q4 in terms of value were China (US$ 439 billion) and the United States (US$ 268 billion). Among the top 15 IG importers, the highest growth (42 per cent) was recorded by India. North America intensified its exports to Africa by 43 per cent year on year in Q4, with its exports of soybeans increasing twentyfold and vaccines fourfold. Africa's exports to Asia continued their rapid rise, growing by 45 per cent in Q4.

King Abdullah Port named Most Efcient Container Port Globally by The World Bank First Place In CPPI 2021 Report Demonstrates Port’s Con nuous Progress In Accordance With Its Long-Term Strategic Plans And Objec ves

KING ABDULLAH ECONOMIC CITY : In a shining achievement on a global level, King Abdullah Port has been ranked first among the most efficient container ports in the world on t h e 2 0 2 1 C o n t a i n e r Po r t Performance Index (CPPI) report published by The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. The port improved its ranking from second place last year after achieving the highest points among 443 ports on both the administrative and statistical methodological approaches of the index, which scores ports against different metrics. Asian and Middle Eastern ports dominated the ranking for the most efficient gateways in the world. King Abdullah Port is followed by counterparts in Oman (Port of Salalah) and Qatar (Hamad Port) respectively. The report noted major improvement in the positions of the top 10 ranked ports, since CPPI 2020. Hamad Port and Jeddah Islamic Port moved up 34 and 35 positions in the ranking respectively, while the Yokohama Port (Japan) fell from its first place in both

approaches in 2020 to 10th and 12th and t h e Po r t o f G u a n g z h o u ( C h i n a ) dropped from 6th to 9th place in CPPI 2021. National Logistics Policy : High thrust to lower Logistics costs to 8% of GDP Commerce Ministry will raise engagement with all States and Union territories to help them improve the overall logis cs ecosystem NEW DELHI: The Government may set a more ambitious target to reduce the Country’s elevated logistics costs, long blamed for eroding its export competitiveness, as it inches closer to finalising a National Logistics Policy. It will likely set a target to reduce logistics costs by as much as five percentage points over the next fourfive years to about 8% of gross domestic product (GDP). An earlier draft of the National Logistics Policy, firmed up in 2019, had aimed to reduce such costs to 10% of GDP. A key thrust of the new policy is to ease various processes and link Government initiatives. Towards this goal, the Commerce Ministry will raise engagement with all States and Union territories to help them improve the overall logistics ecosystem. Synergies flowing from such a coordinated approach will reduce logistics costs,

which, in turn, will act as stimulants to the PM Gati Shakti National Master plan. If the latest target is realised, it will catapult India to the league of developed nations where the logistics costs are around 8-10% of their GDP. The current logistics cost in India, however, is in sync with that in many other developing nations. The logistics sector in India remains complex, with the involvement of more than 20 Government agencies under various Ministries, 40 Partnering Government Agencies and 37 EPC. They deal with 500 certifications covering 10,000 commodities. The renewed thrust on reducing logistics costs assumes significance as the Country aims to substantially raise its merchandise exports to $1 trillion by FY28 from $422 billion in FY22. According to HSBC report, domestic bottlenecks, including high

logistics costs, accounted for a half of the slowdown in exports. As per the Economic Survey 2017-18, a 10% decrease in indirect logistics cost could lead to an export growth of 5-8%. It had predicted that the Indian logistics market would be around $215 billion by 2020. Apart from the move to cut a complex maze of trade documentations and other initiatives in recent years, some relief on the logistics front has come after the stabilisation of the goods and services tax regime. It has not only cut complexities generated by a multitude of indirect taxes that slowed trade, but also benefitted the logistics sector by facilitating faster conversio n of informal logistics set-ups to formal ones and increasing the speed of movement of freight at inter-state borders due to dismantling of check posts.

Shipping companies added capacity, but now Containers stuck in Port : WSJ SINGAPORE: Ship operators are trying to add millions of new containers to address a severe capacity crunch, but the boxes are stuck on liners and at ports as shipping moves into its busiest period, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report. Shipping’s peak season usually starts at the end of June when importers begin ordering products for the back-to-school and holiday seasons. This year, orders went out in mid-May as companies tried to head off the product shortages that plagued them last year. The early start has added to the challenges of getting the supply chain unclogged. “Importers are now bringing in cargo just in case, not just in time, and it makes up for more boxes sitting at the port,” said Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles. “They will continue to be tight until early next year if we don’t increase the velocity of getting them off the ships and off the port.” Mr. Seroka said boxes are gradually picking up and the port will have to handle substantially more cargo as Shanghai, the world’s biggest port, is opening after a two-month citywide closure to fight a Covid outbreak. Ship brokers and consultants estimate about 12% of the world’s boxships are stuck outside congested ports for weeks longer than normal, and inland distribution—especially in the U.S.—is still hampered by a lack of trains, truck drivers and limited warehousing space. Ship operators and brokers say that at the start of 2022, there were around 50.5 million available containers, eight million more than before the pandemic. The increase came on the back of

surging demand for Asian imports by big American retailers like Walmart Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., which collectively make up more than one-quarter of all container imports in the U.S. It normally takes an average of 45 days for products to be shipped from an exporter in China to an importer in the U.S. Now it is more than 100 days, according to liner executives. “At export ports the Shanghai ships wait longer to get loaded, and at import ports like Los Angeles they are stuck because there is no space at container depots,” said Lars Jensen, Chief Executive of Denmark-based consulting firm Vespucci Maritime. “There were enough containers and a lot more were added, but it won’t help if every part of the supply chain moves slower.” At Los Angeles, 40% of the incoming boxes are designated to be moved by rail, but only about half are loaded up every day. Major rail companies furloughed large segments of their workforces during the pandemic and struggled to get them back after many moved to better-paying jobs, shipping executives said. “The time a container takes to go on a train is more than six days. It should be two, and the volume of imported boxes designated for rail is up six times since February,” Mr. Seroka said. “During the pandemic, there was crazy demand; now there is too much inventory still coming in.” Mr. Seroka said there aren’t enough rail drivers and wagons, while half of the port’s gate capacity for trucks goes unused because many cargo owners don’t pick up their boxes due to a lack of warehousing space. Container warehouses and distribution centers in

Southern California are more than 95% full. In some ways things are getting better. It is now easier to find containers, and the line of ships waiting to dock at Los Angeles and Long Beach is around 30, down from more than 100 back in January, when importers were in a race to replenish dwindling inventories. Ship executives said the added container volume has helped keep freight rates this year at an average $8,000 per box on a ship from China to the U.S. West Coast. That rate is less than half the freight cost from late last year, when Wa l m a r t a n d o t h e r r e t a i l g i a n t s temporarily leased their own ships to bring cargo. But with inland supply-chain snarls slowing the movement of goods, carriers are easing up on adding boxes. “While carriers are continuing to order containers to deal with availability issues, this is expected to slow down as uncertainties increase,” said Hanja Maria Richter, a spokeswoman for German container major Hapag-Lloyd AG. “Rising inflation levels, ongoing congestion in supply chains and the Russia-Ukraine war are affecting investor sentiment and the potential for trade growth.“ Hapag-Lloyd added 50,000 containers on its ships in the second quarter of this year. A representative for Danish shipping and logistics giant A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S said the global container shortage seems to be over, with record numbers of empty boxes waiting to be loaded at Asian ports, a complete reversal from last year when it took months for thousands of empty containers at Western ports to move back to Asia.

He interacted with the BOT operators, port users and Stevedores Association of the Port and took stock of their issues and suggestions for improving the port performance along VPA Chairman K Rama Mohana Rao.

The Union Minister reviewed the progress of the projects implemented by the port at a cost of Rs 1,446 crore. Some of them include the OR-1 and OR-2 capacity augmentation project with an investment of Rs 167 crore which is expected to be ready by September next. However, one berth OR-3 was ready and made operational. The firefighting system at OR-1 & OR-2 is being taken by the port to handle bigger size vessels with an investment of Rs 28 crore and will be operational by October. The cruise terminal taken up with an investment of Rs 53 crore will be commissioned by April next. The port has taken up the modernisation of fishing harbour at a cost of Rs 152 crore. VPA took up the mechanisation of EQ-7 project at an estimated cost of Rs 200.99 crore and is

expected to commence its operation by January 2025 with an exclusive mechanised facility for handling fertilizers. Further, the Union minister also met trade unions and noted their demands and suggestions.

Sugar exports to grow up to 10 MMT in ‘22 on lower output in Brazil : India Rating MUMBAI: The country's sugar exports are expected to increase to around 9-10 million tonnes in sugar season 2022, beginning October, following lower production in Brazil due to adverse weather conditions, according to a report. Ind-Ra expects the total exports for SS22 (Sugar Season 2022) to rise to 9-10 million tonnes, surpassing the previous high of 7.2 million tonnes shipped in SS21, as the lower production in Brazil (which is down 40 per cent year-on-year in first 1.5 months ended mid-May 2022) due to adverse weather conditions and delayed harvesting. Brazil is the largest exporter of sugar, constituting 35-45 per cent of the global trade, and a fall in its exports in the current season could result in India's share rising to around

15 per cent, the Ind-Ra report stated. However, Ind-Ra believed exports were anyway unlikely to exceed 10 million tonnes, given the rebound in production in Thailand after two consecutive seasons of decline. As a result, the restriction is unlikely to materially affect the sector, although any issues in the mill-wise approval process could act as a dampener, it added. Meanwhile, with two successive seasons of production deficit, international sugar prices hit a five-year high of over 20 cents per pound in April 2022, averaging around 19 cents per pound till now in Ss22. While India's export restriction has not affected prices meaningfully, prices are likely to remain robust with a lower cane output and sugar mix in Brazil,

which bodes well for Indian exports, Ind-Ra said. It said that despite producing a highquality sugar, the competitiveness of Indian exports is affected by the country's high cane costs relative to other major producers, including B r a z i l , T h a i l a n d a n d Au s t r a l i a , rendering exports unviable without subsidy until about a year back. After hitting a historical high of 14.6 million tonnes at the end of SS19, sugar stocks have been moderating, it added. Despite an increase in the production, higher exports and diversion towards ethanol are likely to reduce the sugar stock further to around 7 million tonnes at end-SS22, although still higher than the normative carry forward requirement of around 5.5 million tonnes.

India likely to clear up to 1 million MT Wheat exports under allowed exemptions NEW DELHI : India is likely to allow wheat exports of up to 1 million mt within the next few days as part of exemptions to its ban on wheat shipments, multiple officials from the country’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. India banned wheat exports on May 13 amid rising domestic inflation and a fall in output. The Government had reduced the wheat output estimates for marketing year 2022-23 (April-May) by 5 million mt on May 19 from 111.4 million mt projected in February. The revised output would be around 3% lower on the year. In its notification announcing the export ban, the government had also exempted shipments under contracts where letters of credit were issued on or before May 13. The soon-to-be-announced clearance for shipments is expected under this exemption, they added.

“Around half of the shipments are to go to Bangladesh largely by railways and roadways,” an official with the trade ministry added. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has been scrutinizing the letters of credit opened on or before May 13, the official said. It was alleged that many firms had opened back-dated letters of credit to be eligible for the shipment exemptions. However, the directorate general has streamlined the contracts to be approved by the trade ministry. “The DGFT has sought approval for around 1 million mt wheat of exports in this phase against genuine letters of credit,” an official with a multi-national grains trading firm said. Since India banned wheat exports, it has allowed four shipments with 250,000 mt to Bangladesh, Oman, Brazil, and Indonesia. Indian exporters were expected to

ship around 7.5 million mt under the provided relaxations in MY 2022-23. However, India’s exports in MY 2022-23 are now seen to be limited to around 6 million mt, a Mumbai-based exporter said. For MY 2022-23, India has already exported nearly 3 million mt wheat over April-May, a government official said. India had exported a record 7.85 million mt wheat in MY 2021-22, over three times the 2.1 million mt shipped the year before. India had emerged as a key exporter of wheat amid globally tight supplies. Australia is now seen as a stable supplier of wheat in the Asia Pacific region since India imposed a ban. However, with the ban on exports Australian wheat prices have increased sharply, Australian Standard White wheat prices rose nearly 9% since May 12 to $425/mt on May 27.

Freight Rates on key routes stabilise for Indian Shippers : Report MUMBAI: According to a recent analysis of industry data, the trend of container freight rates stabilising or easing on larger trade routes out of India that began in April has persisted into this month. The average westbound contract rates on the India-Europe trade have dipped slightly from the end of April levels. Rates are now around US$7,615/teu and US$8,015/feu from West India [Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA)/Nhava Sheva or Mundra Port] to Felixstowe/London Gateway (UK), down from US$7,765 and US$8,145, respectively, in April. Ex-West India to Rotterdam rates have dropped to around US$7,015 per teu and US$7,045 per feu, respectively, from US$7,415 and US$7,445. Eastbound rates are also at the same levels as they were at the end of April — at US$1,925/20-foot container and US$2,045/4-foot container for cargo shipped from Felixstowe/Rotterdam to West India. Contract rates for Indian cargo to the United States have seen no changes from the April trends – averaging at US$10,100 per teu box and US$12,700 per feu box for bookings to the US East Coast (New York), and at US$11,725 and US$14,765, respectively, for the US West Coast (Los Angeles). For the West India-US Gulf Coast trade, rates have remained stable at US$10,900 per teu and US$13,700 per feu. However, in the reverse direction, there has been an increase of 10-15%, on average, for bookings from the US East/West/Gulf coasts to West India. With sustained demand, average contract rates on intra-Asia trades have either remained static or have moved up from the levels reported in April. For shipments from West India to South China (Yantian), rates are hovering at around

US$600 per 20-footer and US$900 per 40-footer, up from US$500 and US$750, respectively, as at the end of April. For the West India-Singapore trade, rates have increased to US$450 and US$650, from US$400 and US$600 in April. Fo r S o u t h C h i n a - We s t I n d i a , 20-foot/40-foot rates are now hovering at around US$2,400 and US$4,500, compared with US$2,000 and US$3,800 in April, according to the analysis. “The rates have not bounced back, and they are still at least 2-3x compared to prepandemic levels,” Sylvester D’mello, Director of Operations at Indian digital forwarder Freightwalla was quoted as saying. “However, they are now comparatively lower than a few months ago. The Freight Index around the world is now pointing at the lower end. There could be more than one reason for the declining freight rates. Lockdowns at Chinese ports have begun to cease, and the unwinding of ports’ congestion and ease of pressure for space also plays a part in driving down the spot rates. Weakness in rates is also seen in the Asia-West Coast route, reflecting the previous speculation on freight rates.” According to Mr D’mello, decreased freight rates on some routes cannot be the sole reason for implying low demands. “Important ports across Asia, Europe and the US are off their peaks. Blank sailing has also been on a low, but it is continuous due to multiple reasons such as reduced import demands and congestion. Vessel capacity has improved, but it has not been on the full scale,” he explains. While that provides some relief for Indian shippers – badly bruised by rocketing rates, the resurfacing of booking cancellation charges has become another pain point for them. All major carriers operating to/from India have begun

collecting container no-show fees for bookings that fail to materialise for vessel loading. At the same time, Indian exports continue to show impressive growth, having hit a new high of US$40 billion last year. “The outstanding accomplishments of the exporters have consistently not only helped the economy to reap rich dividends but will also support our endeavour to become a US$5 trillion economy by 2025,” said A. Sakthivel, President of the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO), in a statement. “Starting the fiscal with such an impressive beginning will further add to the motivation of the exporting community for much higher growth during the financial year.” As the challenges facing Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port are unlikely to loosen up any time soon, Indian east coast ports have ramped up their efforts to position themselves as alternative port call options for mainliners serving the subcontinent market. But there’s scepticism among carrier leaders about infrastructure and productivity standards at Indian terminals. “The southern Indian ports like Tuticorin, Cochin and Ennore need to be able to accommodate larger vessels in terms of length/beam and draft, to be able to offer themselves as viable alternatives to Colombo,” Mr. Sunil Vaswani of the Container Shipping Lines Association (CSLA) was quoted as saying in a report. He added, “Ennore has a draf t limitation of 15 metres, whereas Tuticorin can accommodate vessels up to LOA 310 metres/draft 14.2 metres and Cochin up to LOA 335/ draft 14.5 metres. On the other hand, Colombo can accommodate vessels up to LOA up to 395 metres/draft 17 metres.”

DFCs deadline again extended by 2 years NEW DELHI : The Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) would be delayed again for the fifth time in this decade. The completion deadline for the projects is now being extended by two years over pandemicinduced challenges and land acquisition delays. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCC) has sent its revised completion estimates to the ministry of railways. It sought time till 2023 to complete the Eastern DFC and 2024 for the Western DFC. The DFCs were earlier slated to be completed by next month. The latest extension will be the fifth revision in the completion timeline of the two DFCs. The project was initially expected to be completed in 2017. Since then, it has been extended to March 2018, March 2020, December 2021, and June 2022. Marred by Covid-induced delays in land acquisition, contractual fulfilment, and cash flow concerns, DFCC — in its project status report in December — stated, “Progress of works is badly affected in the second wave and targets are likely to be delayed.” The revised timelines, however, have upset the ministry of railways, which, in its internal communications, expressed dissatisfaction. It sought advancing the

targets, said officials in the know. “There were internal concerns over the revised targets. We thought DFCC could have implemented certain things faster, but after consultations over its issues as the executing agency, there is consensus to go for ward with the proposed targets,” said a senior official. The new target, although farther than anticipated, is a more realistic one, a railways official said. There have also been lags in capital expenditure (capex) by DFCC. As of March, the government-owned firm has spent a little more than two-thirds of its Rs 15,000-crore capex target for the financial year 2021-22, the company’s internal reports show. DFCC has so far commissioned 1,010 kilometres (km) of the proposed 2,843 km, pertaining to stretches undertaken by the government for both the corridors. A 538-km stretch between Sonnagar in Bihar and Dankuni in West Bengal is being developed under PPP mode. Since its inception in 2007, the government’s marquee logistics project has undergone several delays due to concerns over land acquisition and contract-awarding lags. The agency had cited issues with procurement of imported goods and rising

prices of steel as challenges to timely execution. There have been cost overruns due to repeated delays. The initial cost estimate of Rs 21,040 crore was revised to Rs 81,459 crore in 2015, and is now likely to be revised to over Rs 1.24 trillion. Previously reported that the ministry is expected to move the Union Cabinet to sanction the revised cost soon. Freight corridors are special tracks made for goods trains, aimed at decongesting the rail network and ensuring quicker movement of goods. With the Government’s focus on infrastructure development, the DFC project has been touted as a gamechanger in freight movement. It has seen constant monitoring from the upper-most echelons of the government. In 2021, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said that DFCs will lead to rapid development, calling them a boon for the nation. The eastern DFC (1,875 route kilometre, or rkm) starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana will pass through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, before terminating in West Bengal. The Western DFC (1,506 rkm), which will connect the significant Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Maharashtra) to Uttar Pradesh, will pass through Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
