Maersk to introduce Chennai Service linking Ennore, Colombo and Ports in Middle East COPENHAGEN : Danish Shipping Company Maersk has increased its focus on the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East to address the challenge in the Red Sea and Suez Canal. It will launch a weekly Chennai Service and a new Arabian Sea service. It will introduce a new container service between India and Sri Lanka and the Middle East. From February 5, it will launch a new weekly Chennai Service. Its rotation will be Salalah, Oman - Colombo, Sri Lanka - Ennore, India - Colombo, Sri Lanka Salalah, Oman. In Colombo, Maersk will have connections to Europe through its AE7 service and to the Far East with its AE55 service. Maersk said Both services include West Mediterranean hubs offering connections to North Europe.

As the situation around the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden persists, the line said it is working to maintain capacity and offer greater reliability for supply chains. It will also introduce a new service called Arabian Sea Service. The rotation will be Salalah, Oman - Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates - Port Qasim, Pakistan Pipavav, India - Nhava Sheva, India - Salalah, Oman. The first sailing in the service will be GSL Kalliopi, which will depart Salalah on February 9, the line said. It will introduce the new weekly services connecting the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The Gulf Service will serve Salalah, Oman - Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates - Doha, Qayar - Damma, Saudi Arabia - Al Jubayl, Saudi Arabia - Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Duqm, Oman - Salalah, Oman. The first sailing will be San Clemente, departing from Salalah on February 5.

YOUR QUERIES - OUR SOLUTION by Dr. Pramod Sant, A distinguished Industry Expert QUESTION: We are an MSME company and have received an Export order, we are not clear on how to ensure that we claim all Export Incentives can you guide us with steps to be followed and how to evil benefits? We are importing a few critical components in our product. SOLUTION: Congratulations to your organization on the acquisition of Export orders. My feedback on your question is as below.

Planning of any Export Incentives/Benefits or remission should be done at the offer stage (when you send a quote for Exports to overseas customers) Even if you have missed the first step let us go ahead and make the best out of the present situation. 1. Assumption: MSME is a non-EOU, SEZ company and not using MOOWAR. 2. Definition: It is important to understand the definition of various terms, as we are now in today’s world of Remission of duties and benefits or incentives do not exist.

Legal Basis: a) Foreign Trade Policy (FTP)-2023, chapter 4 Duty Exemption /Remission Scheme b) Customs Act 1962, Section 75 c) Drawback schedule -available on CBIC website (Now in force-Notification No. 77/2023-CUSTOMS (N.T.) New Delhi, the 20th October, 2023) d) RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products) in Appendix 4R-Available on DGFT website (now in force dated 1.5.2023) 4. Strategic Decision :

Groundwork • Deliver required by an overseas customer. • Manufacturing and transit lead time • Imported items- stock, delivery lead time. • Check if the item appears in the Drawback schedule and rate. • Check if the Export product is covered in RoDTEP and the rate applicable. 6. Checkpoint and Decision Drawback Route: • Delivery asked by the customer is short and no time available for fresh import of items. Use duty-paid items

from the stock and go for the drawback route. Check if the drawback rates All industry rate (AIR) adequately covers custom duties paid by you or not. Is there is need to go for a Dr. Pramod Sant Special Brand Rate (SBR)-is value of SBR is substantial which will cover the processing of SBR claim cost. Keep in mind timelines for AIR & SBR. AIR will be disbursed in 30-45 days or earlier (Based on your AEO status). Whereas SBR takes longer. Are you well-equipped to give all imports, inventory, and utilization records? Do you have a reliable consultant who will handle SBR, what are his costs? Is the item exported by you covered in SION (standard Input output norms)? You have an excess inventory of imported items, and the utilization of duty-paid items will help in inventory reduction.
Advance Authorization (AA) Route • The delivery asked by the customer is long and you have time to import duty-free items under AA. • C h e c k s a v i n g s d u e to d u t y s a ve d a f te r considering the cost of obtaining AA, giving duty difference Bond / BG, AA redemptions, and closing expor t obligation cost including obtaining Bond / BG back. • Check the above saving’s impact on reduced working capital. • Check do you have the right consultant to handle AA and redemption. • Do you have the right people who can handle this entire process? including record keeping and documentation. 7. After decision: Whichever route is selected ensure you Monitor critical timelines, milestones, and processes to ensure success. 8. At the time of Exports a. Ensure Correct internal documentation-invoice, item description, HSN code, GST declarations, mode selected Drawback, AIR, SBR or Advance Authorization (AA). Drawback code, RoDTEP declaration, etc. where applicable b. The right type of Shipping bill-Drawback or DEEC? Correct codes and AA numbers where applicable. c. T h e b e s t w a y t o e n s u r e c o r r e c t documentation is to check the draft invoice, checklist from Customs brokers, etc. 9. Post Exports • Check all documents and maintain them where they can be accessed easily. • Check if there are any errors like EGM and get the same resolved! • Keep a tab and follow up if necessary for Drawback amount / RoDTEP • Ensure Exports Proceeding is received as per payment terms agreed upon and within RBI guidelines. • After receipt of payment ensure you have FIRC and BRC details • In case of Advance Authorization close export obligation and redeem licenses, Cancel Bond /BG Conclusion: Any steps missing will result in not only non-compliance but also financial loss. Review the process periodically for Changes and improve the process or switch to the best alternative.

Adani Ports, Mundra creates national record by handling 16596 TEUs on single vessel MSC Livorno Cont’d. from Pg. 2
One of its key facilities, APSEZ Mundra, has once again etched its name in maritime history with a remarkable achievement. T h e A d a n i International Container Ter minal (AICTPL) at Mundra proudly announces a significant milestone achieved on Januar y 21, 2024. The team at AICTPL is thrilled to report that the container vessel MV MSC Livorno successfully exchanged a staggering 16,569 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) at the port before setting sail. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it surpasses the national record of 16,400 TEUs, which was previously set by AICTPL at Adani Mundra Port on
July 22, 2022, when the MSC Danit accomplished the feat. The MV MSC Livorno, measuring an impressive 366 meters in length and boasting a carrying capacity of 14,000 TEUs, arrived at Adani Mundra Port from Colombo. The vessel's exchange of 16,569 TEUs sets a new high in container handling, showcasing the
efficiency and capabilities of AICTPL. Following this record-breaking operation, the MV MSC Livorno embarked on its journey to Ya n t i a n , C h i n a , underscoring the global connectivity and strategic importance of Adani Mundra Port as a key hub in international maritime trade. Eastern Maritime Corridor could benefit India amid Red Sea crisis CHENNAI : Indian Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal stated that given the geopolitical situation in the Red Sea and Suez Canal, the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC) could be an effective alternative for movement of goods and will provide India a lot of opportunities. The EMC connects ports on India’s east coast with the ports in Far East Russia via Malacca Strait, the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan, he pointed out. The situation in the Red Sea that’s impacting maritime trade is a serious matter. India has given importance to freedom of navigation and freedom of commerce, and the Government of India has been taking adequate measures to ensure maritime security for seamless movement of commercial vessels. The ministries concerned are taking action in this regard, he said. “We may see Russian icebreakers being built at Indian shipyards. These are encouraging possibilities of India-Russia Maritime Partnership,” Sonowal further said after inaugurating the India-Russia workshop for ‘Operationalisation of the
Eastern Maritime Corridor’ in Chennai. “I am also optimistic of the many prospects for deepening our bilateral maritime cooperation, particularly in the two countries’ maritime skill development and training, shipbuilding and port-based clean energy investments. Indian seafarers will be equipped in Russia with the necessary training to undertake polar voyages for Arctic shipping,” he said. The minister said the corridor promises immense potential to unlock new trade opportunities, thereby fostering mutual economic prosperity and resilience. The saving on time and fuel will enhance the corridor’s viability, he said. Anatoly Yuryevich Bobrakov, Deputy Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Artic of the Russian Federation, said there has already been over $130 billion investment in Russia in the oil and gas sectors. Russia sees India as its strategic partner and is working closely to deepen bi lateral ties through enhanced trade relations. He invited Indian delegates to attend the upcoming 9th Far Eastern Economic Forum in September 2024 in Russia.
CONCOR posts higher Q3 profit on growing cargo volumes NEW DELHI : Container Corporation of India (Concor) reported a jump in third-quarter profit, supported by growth in volumes of cargo handled that eclipsed higher freight prices being passed to consumers. The state-owned company reported a consolidated net profit of 3.31 billion rupees ($39.8 million) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, up 12% from last year. Revenue from operations rose more than 10% to 22.11 billion rupees, signalling higher demand for cargo transporters during a period that coincided with festivities and related purchasing in the country. Container Corporation’s total volumes handled rose
about 6.1% year-on-year, despite passing higher freight charges on to customers, with volumes in its mainstay export-import segment up 8.3%. Export import segment contributes two-thirds of the cargo operator’s revenue. Dedicated freight corridors, which analysts expect to aid rail connectivity, is boosting the company’s volumes and helping it regain market share, which were stressed due to heated competition from private cargo firms. Concor’s market share stood at 65%-70%, JM Financial analysts noted in November, after healthy demand lifted the company’s Q2 profit. Its earnings were also boosted by India’s festival season, which shifted into the third-quarter, analysts said.

Maritime sector seeks more allocation, green ports to navigate growth MUMBAI : The Government will present its Interim Budget for 2024-25 on February 1. Mulling the forthcoming elections scheduled between April and May 2024, it is expected that this Budget will remain intact until the new government comes into place. Although major announcements may be limited, there is an opportunity for potential advancements and enhancements across different sectors and industries in India. India is ranked third in the world for its maritime strength, and its maritime industry is crucial for the country’s trade. Almost all of the goods traded by volume (95%) and a significant portion by value (70%) are transported by sea. This includes things like oil, building materials, and various dry bulk items such as grains, fertilizer, steel, coal, and minerals. Even while the maritime industry makes significant contributions, there are still some challenges which need to be resolved and advancements to be made. The existing number of ports, while substantial, proves inadequate as India experiences a substantial cargo traffic. In the fiscal year 2023-24 (from April to May), major ports witnessed an increase in cargo traffic, handling 133.93 million tonnes compared to 130.84 million tonnes in April-May 2022-23. Addressing the growing demand requires not only expanding port infrastructure but also reducing turnaround time. Moreover, there is a pressing need to enhance the production of vessels, tankers, and containers for global trade shipping. This imperative was evident during the Covid-19 pandemic and continued vigilance is crucial, especially in the face of potential global crises like the ongoing Red Sea situation. Major Priorities for the Upcoming Budget: Allocation for more major ports In the fiscal year 2023 (April-January), major ports in India efficiently managed a staggering 646.10 million tonnes of cargo, exhibiting a commendable growth rate of 8.8%. More than half (54%) of all cargo activity in the country is managed by the 12 main ports. As we heavily depend on these few ports, it’s crucial for the government to help private ports and invest more in improving the major ports. The escalating trends in e commerce and global trade underline the pressing need for additional port infrastructure to seamlessly cater to the increasing demands of cargo traffic soon.

This shift will not only contribute to the reduction in carbon emissions but will also benefit logistics companies by reducing costs for new fuel tank installations fostering a positive impact on both fronts. More subsidy support for Indian registered vessels Currently, 1,526 ships sail under the Indian flag, benefiting from a 10% subsidy scheme to boost the flagging of Indian merchant ships by providing subsidy support to local shipping companies in global tenders. To further support shipping companies and increase tonnage, the initial budget of Rs 1,624 crore for five years needs a 20% subsidy boost. This will encourage more ship building, Indian vessel registration, and contribute to global trade and the Indian economy. Furthermore, domestic waterways emerge as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for freight transportation. With the government’s ambitious goal to operationalise 23 waterways by 2030 and the anticipated cargo traffic at ports reaching 2,500 MMTPA by 2025, the current cargo handling capacity of 2,400+ MMTPA falls short. The reforms in the Interim Budget will present a crucial step towards aligning infrastructure with projected demands. These measures will not only enhance the logistics and maritime sector but will also position India to bolster global trade, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
India begins commercial export of pomegranates to the USA NEW DELHI : India has begun commercial export of pomegranates to the USA after it lifted the export ban in 2022. The government expects this move to open a big market for the Indian pomegranates, a fruit which is being increasing preferred by consumers across the world for its health benefits. A consignment of 1344 kilograms of pomegranates of Kay Bee Export treated in the presence of an inspector from the USA was shipped by air on January 24. “The pomegranates were first processed at the pack house of Kay Bee Exports and then irradiated at the Irradiation
Facility Centre (IFC) of Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) at Vashi in the presence of the US inspector to Florida in USA,” said MSAMB in a release. It added, “In 2017-2018, the United States had banned the import of pomegranates from India due to fruit fly infestation in pomegranate.” The Agricultural and Processed Foods Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) had jointly started discussions with the United States Department of Agriculture to lift the export ban.

NEW DELHI : The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 19,100 crores in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. The projects are related to several important sectors like rail, road, oil & gas & urban development & Housing. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said dwelling on the adverse impact of lack of connectivity in the earlier times on agriculture, the solution can be seen in the new airport and the new Dedicated Freight Corridor. The Prime Minister dedicated to the nation the 173 Km long double line electrified section between New Khurja New Rewari on Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) by flagging off goods trains from the two stations through video conferencing. This new DFC section is important as it establishes crucial connectivity between the Western and Eastern DFCs. Further, this section is also known for its remarkable feat of engineering. It has a ‘one kilometre long double line rail tunnel with high rise electrification’, which is the first of its kind in the world. This tunnel is designed to seamlessly operate double-stack container trains. This new DFC section will help in improving the operation of passenger trains due to the shifting of goods trains on the DFC track. The Prime Minister also dedicated to the nation the fourth line connecting Mathura ? Palwal section & Chipiyana Buzurg ? Dadri section. These new lines will improve the rail connectivity of the national capital to Southern Western & Eastern India. The Prime Minister dedicated multiple road development projects to the nation. The projects include Aligarh to Bhadwas four-laning work Package-1 (part of Aligarh-Kanpur Section of NH-34); widening of Meerut to Karnal border via Shamli (NH-709A); and four laning of Shamli-Muzaffarnagar section of NH-709 AD Package-II. These road projects, developed at a cumulative cost of more than Rs 5000 crore will improve connectivity and help in the economic development in the region. During the programme, the Prime Minister also inaugurated Indian Oil’s Tundla-Gawaria Pipeline. Built at a cost of about Rs 700 crore, this 255 km long pipeline project has been completed well ahead of the scheduled time. The project will help in the transportation of petroleum products from Tundla to Gawaria T-Point of Barauni-Kanpur Pipeline with pumping facilities at Mathura and Tundla and delivery facilities at Tundla, Lucknow and Kanpur. The Prime Minister also dedicated to the nation ‘Integrated Industrial Township at Greater Noida’ (IITGN). Built at a cost of Rs. 1,714 crore, the project is spread over 747 acres and is located near the intersection of Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to the south and the Delhi-Howrah broad gauge railway line to the east. IITGN’s strategic location ensures unparalleled connectivity as other infrastructures for multi-modal connectivity are present in the vicinity of this project viz. Noida-Greater Noida Expressway (5 km), Yamuna Expressway (10 km), Delhi Airport (60 km), Jewar Airport (40 km), Ajaibpur Railway Station (0.5 km) and New Dadri DFCC Station (10 km). The project marks a significant step towards fostering industrial growth, economic prosperity, and sustainable development in the region. Red Sea woes: Exporters seek increased credit as freight rates jump 300% NEW DELHI : Indian exporters have asked the Central Government to help facilitate more credit as freight rates have jumped nearly 300 per cent due to the disruption in the Red Sea route forcing global shipping lines to take longer trade routes, which is ultimately affecting exports of low value items such as Basmati rice. Increasing attacks on ships sailing in the Red Sea region since November 2023 have forced shippers to consider the alternative, longer route past the Cape of Good Hope, which has not only stretched delivery time by 15 to 20 days, but also increased the transit cost substantially because of incremental freight rates and insurance premium. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Director General Ajay Sahai told that freight costs have surged by 300 per cent as global shipping lines are taking the Cape of Good Hope route, which is why exporters have sought more credit to match the rising cost of shipments to Europe. Meanwhile, ratings agency Crisil said that players operating in sectors such as agricultural commodities and marine foods could see a significant impact due to the perishable nature of their goods or lean margin profiles, which limit their ability to absorb the risks from rising freight cost.
“Not all sectors are expected to be impacted to the same extent. In fact, for agricultural commodities like Basmati rice (30-35% of production is shipped to these regions), exporters are feeling the pressure as rising freight cost has curbed exports and a part of their inventory is now being sold in the domestic market, leading to a moderation in realisations,” the report said. Indian companies use the Red Sea route through the Suez Canal to trade with Europe, North America, North Africa, and parts of the west Asia. Crisil said that these regions accounted for 50 per cent of India’s exports worth Rs 18 lakh crore and 30 per cent of imports worth Rs 17 lakh crore last fiscal. “Marine foods –predominantly shrimp and prawn – could also see a significant impact as 80-90 per cent of the production is exported, more than half of it through the Red Sea. Their perishable nature and lean margins make exporters vulnerable to rising freight cost and competitive pressure from Latin American suppliers,” the report added. The sources had earlier reported that the Finance Ministry is set to hold a high-level meeting on February 5 to ensure smooth trade payments amid challenges emanating from the disruption in the Red Sea region.

DGFT calls for e-commerce boost to transform India into a global leader in gold jewellery exports NEW DELHI : The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has urged the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council to popularise jewellery exports through e-commerce and to position India as a top supplier, design creator and valueadding hub for gold jewellery. Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Director General of DGFT said, “India stands as one of the largest buyers of gold globally, showcasing considerable buying power that can potentially influence the streamlining of gold prices and availability. Recognising the fragmented nature of gold demand in India, spanning from small to large jewellers and varying from kilograms to tons, there’s a pressing need for streamlining exports. With immense potential, the aim should be to become the foremost exporter globally. Drawing a parallel with Switzerland, we need champions in India investing in creative designs catering to Western tastes.” “Collaboration between the Department of Commerce, GJEPC, and leading brands is essential to formulate a robust branding strategy positioning India as a top supplier and valueadded provider of gold jewellery”, said Mr. Sarangi at India Gold & Jewellery Summit, held on January 23 and 24. Talking about e-commerce, Mr. Sarangi said, “The potential of e-commerce in cross-border transactions is vast, with estimates predicting a rise to 2 trillion dollars by 2030. To encourage this platform, the consignment value for ecommerce exports is increased to Rs 10 lakh. GJEPC is urged to organize outreach programs in interior regions to facilitate understanding and adoption of e-commerce platforms.” R. Arulanandan, Director, Department of Commerce, Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry, said, India faces challenges as a consuming nation heavily reliant on imports, particularly of bullion and dore gold. “The complexities of exporting 24-karat gold further add to our concerns, including regulatory issues. Vipul Shah, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “The India Gold & Jewellery Summit aims is to create a dialogue between the policy makers and the industry to help create policies for growth of trade and exports from India’s gem and jewellery sector. This year’s Summit is significant due to key policy initiatives taken by the Government such as signing of India UAE CEPA and India Australia ECTA; successful implementation of Hallmarking and HUID policy; a very successful review of India by FATF & a host of other initiatives. We aim to reach a cumulative gem and jewellery export value of USD 75 billion by 2030. Specifically, we have set a target for gold jewellery alone to achieve USD 25 billion by 2030.” “The gold industry plays a significant role in shaping our economic landscape. India has made remarkable strides, creating a dynamic ecosystem with vast potential for growth. This includes jewellery manufacturing units, retailers, exporters, refiners, gold exchange, skill development institutes, and promotional bodies such as GJEPC, which showcase and create markets for India-made jewellery across the world,” said Mr Shah. Shah added, “GJEPC recently launched a SOP book for the Gold Jewellery Industry, which sets out general compliances required to be undertaken by the gold jewellery industry from the perspective of Customs Law, Foreign Trade Policy; Goods and Services Tax, Income Tax and Hallmarking.” Talking about the India-UAE CEPA, Shah added, “The gold industry, especially, has been benefited by India-UAE CEPA which was championed by our Commerce Minister. To take full advantage of CEPA we have also set up India Jewellery Exposition Centre in Dubai. India’s exports of plain gold jewellery to UAE surged by 47% during April – November 2023. In 2022, the global exports of gold jewellery reached USD 113.19 billion, with India contributing significantly by accounting for USD 9.22 billion or 8.10% of this total. India secured its position as the 4th largest exporter of gold jewellery, following major players such as China, UAE and Switzerland.
