Active shippers have increased by 65% post lockdown: Report MUMBAI : Shiprocket, a techenabled logistics aggregator, in a report prepared for Direct-to -Consumer (D2C) sellers, has said India has witnessed an increase of 65 per cent in active shippers. This report analyses shipment trends in post-lockdown India in the D2C sector for the period May 18 to June 30. With a sample size of over 26,000 sellers, Shiprocket’s report states that 15 per cent of sellers activated post-lockdown were sellers of essential products. Even though the lockdown was lifted from the non-essential category, the shipment volumes for essential products were nearly three times higher, with over 40 per cent of overall volumes coming from essential categories compared to the lockdown period. In an interesting insight on the sellers’ future mode of business, the survey said, 60 per cent of sellers admitted that a blend of both offline and online would be preferred, going forward. Less than 2 per cent of sellers were unsure of how the new normal will look like for them. Further, it was revealed that
Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru clocked the highest number of pick-ups and deliveries, which underlines the pent-up demand that was there in these cities during the lockdown. Also, sellers in these cities were able to overcome challenges more quickly to become operational. While Delhi leads in pick-ups with 26.44 per cent shipments, Mumbai was the top city in terms of deliveries with 7.58 per cent shipments. The average delivery time intracity, intrastate, and interstate stood at 1.30 days, 2.20 days, and 3.8 days respectively. The report also said 90 per cent the respondents were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the products category, medicines and groceries were the most shipped items during the lockdown. In the Unlock 1.0 phase, health and beauty retail (32 per cent), fashion apparel (28 per cent), and electronics, automobile, and accessories (18 per cent) were the top three categories in terms of shipments. Sharing his insights, Saahil Goel, Co-founder, and CEO of Shiprocket, said in an official announcement: “The three-month lockdown created a
major disruption in the supply chain and the demand-to-supply ratio was not balanced with demand increasing exponentially. Our report was based on the patterns and trends observed. Unlock 1.0 has paved the way for a new phase of logistics operations in India.” Goel added: “The Government has eased restrictions on several aspects of logistics and e-commerce and we look forward to continuing our services in Unlock 1.0 without hindrances in the supply chain and shipping. It’s interesting to see an increased demand for hyperlocal services amidst this pandemic. We hope the situation improves and the world returns to normalcy soon.” “It was becoming increasingly challenging for our team to continue store operations during the lockdown. Since Unlock 1.0, my online clothing business has witnessed a significant increase in orders by over 40 per cent,” added Leo, Owner of Vennila Clothing Company, a seller from Tir upur, in Tamil Nadu. The most popular products were anti-bacterial and anti-pollution face masks, baby shampoo, men’s t-shirts, and knitted face masks, among others.

Gati appoints Shashi Kiran Shetty as Chairman Move to expedite the turnaround of express logistics company, cement cultural collaboration MUMBAI: Express logistics company Gati has appointed Allcargo CMD Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty its Chairman in a move that will expedite its turnaround in a big way. Allcargo acquired 46.83% in Gati for Rs. 416 crore in April, making it one of the largest multimodal logistics players in India. Mr. K. L. Chugh, who contributed immensely as Gati’s Non-Executive Chairman for 22 years, stepped down from the board on July 24, paving the way for the new leadership. In the previous board meeting, Gati’s board had inducted Allcargo’s Joint Managing Director Mr. Adarsh Hegde, Chief Investment Officer Jatin Chokshi, K aiwan Kalyaniwalla, Cynthia D’Souza, Mohinder Pal Bansal and Dinesh Kumar Lal as Independent Directors.
Shashi Kiran Shetty’s leadership will catalyse the transformation of Gati. “The new leadership will strengthen the strategic partnership between the two independent companies, align them to a common culture and values as also stimulate the transformation of the group into one of the largest multimodal logistics service providers in the Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty country. Ministry of Shipping waives waterways usage charges to promote Inland water transport The eco-friendly and cheaper mode of transport will promote Ease of Doing Business: Shri Mansukh Mandaviya NEW DELHI: Ministry of Shipping has decided to waive waterway usage charges with immediate effect considering the Government of India’s vision to promote inland waterways as a supplementary, eco-friendly and cheaper mode of transport. The charges are waived initially for three years.
Govt considering model handbook of processes & documentation for ports : Special Secretary Logistics CHENNAI: In a bid to usher in transparency and ensure logistics efficiency of ports and airports, the Union Commerce Ministry is likely to come out with a model handbook to deal with the process and documentation in ports, according to Pawan Kumar Agarwal, Special Secretary of Logistics, Ministry of Commerce. Based on this model handbook, the ports will then develop a handbook, said Agarwal while addressing a seminar on export-import Trade in New Nor mal organised by Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently. He said that a standardized manual for all the ports could not be prepared as there are variations in operations of ports across the country. He said the model will be developed by port authorities along with other stakeholders and okayed by the logistics division. “There will be a third party audit of the handbooks to ensure it is being implemented,” said Agarwal who has sought feedback from the industry on the feasibility of such a process. Stressing on the need for going digital, he said the exchange of documents is being done manually in ports and 30 percent of the documents are redundant. “They serve no purpose and one-third of documents are submitted more than once,” said Agarwal. Maiden ICT Rake to ICD Jajpur from VCT VISAKHAPATNAM: International Cargo Terminal (ICT) under the aegis of J M Baxi Group is deploying its own rakes on the East Coast of India connecting Visakha Container Terminal to the hinterland in order to support the trade and catering to the prevailing demand. As a first step towards this, ICT has deployed its rakes for Jindal Stainless Limited (ICD Jajpur) from VCT partnering with Maersk Line. JSL – ICD Jajpur is the only rail-linked facility located in the region in the paved custom bonded area of 12.46 acres with a capacity to handle 4500 TEUs at any given point of time. The railway siding has been declared as PFT (Public Freight Terminal) and is open for Public Domain as well. The rakes will be carrying import containers of steel scrap and other ancillary products from VCT to JSL’s facility at Jajpur – Odisha and exports of steel as finished products in return. This Rake movement will ease the process of Export-Import flow and would lead to cost & time saving for the stakeholders involved in the process. The first rake from VCT was flagged off on the 24th of July with 90x20’ containers to ICD Jajpur. 4 such rakes are planned to be deployed on a dedicated basis in this circuit. This is just the beginning of a new era at VCT wherein many more such new ventures shall be explored and replicated for
all potential rail head businesses in the hinterland of Visakhapatnam and beyond. Message from Maersk Line Maersk has tied up with JM Baxi to offer an end-to-end logistics solution for Jindal Steel. Under this solution, container freight trains will be deployed to offer access to customers in Odisha and also offer a connected journey from
Land to Sea. Maersk and JM Baxi have earlier provided similar solutions to customers in North and West India. “We are extremely proud to announce our 3rd inland acceptance depot in the state of Odisha after Balasore and Jharsuguda. Trade is a key enabler of growth and as a global integrator of container logistics, our aim is to simplify supply chains for our customers by facilitating end-to-end logistics, reducing the transit time and cost to make it more accessible and sustainable for everyone” said Bhavik Mota, Head Of Product, Maersk South Asia. He added, “We believe that this new acceptance depot will offer efficiency for Jindal Steel while also empowering the local trade ecosystem to become more inclusive, thereby amplifying livelihood across the region.”
DP World to open logistics centre in Duran, Ecuador DUBAI: DP World is to open the first logistics centre in Duran, next to the deep-water Posorja terminal, in Ecuador. The centre will offer services to the entire foreign trade chain in Ecuador, in Posorja and the other port terminals in Guayaquil. The logistics centre is 90% complete and is located in the industrial zone of the Durán district. The space will have large, modern and safe facilities; spaces for empty containers; cross-docking area, for consolidation of banana, cocoa and coffee cargo; stevedoring and palletizing service. The facility, the first of its kind will also have a refrigerated container area (PTI) to be delivered to exporters, and electronic systems that will provide security during all processes. The investment is around $60m and is part of DP World's commitment to Ecuador to contribute to sustainable and economic development by providing innovative logistics solutions. "The work done so far is a source of pride for all the teams
that have achieved this milestone despite the unprecedented challenges. The development of this logistics centre ratifies DP World's commitment to Ecuador," said Nicolas Gauthier, ceo of DP World in Ecuador. The Covid-19 pandemic did not cause a significant delay to the construction project according to DP World. Workers comply with all biosecurity measures established by the government, such as the use of masks, social distancing, site disinfection and medical monitoring.

Ministry of Shipping waives waterways usage charges to promote Inland water transport The eco-friendly and cheaper mode of transport will promote Ease of Doing Business: Shri Mansukh Mandaviya Cont’d. from Pg. 3
As the mode of transport is eco-friendly and cheaper, it will not only reduce the burden on other transport modes but also promote the Ease of Doing Business the Minister added. Water usage charge was applicable on use of all the national waterways by vessels. It was a hindrance in administration of traffic movement and collection of traffic data. Presently, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)
levies the water way usage charges at a rate of Rs 0.02 per gross registered tonnage (GRT) per kilometer for plying of Inland cargo vessels and Rs. 0.05 per gross registered tonnage (GRT) per kilometer for plying of Cruise vessels on national waterways. The decision is estimated to increase the inland waterway traffic movement to 110 MMT in 2022-23 from 72 MMT in 2019-20. It will benefit the economic activities and development in the region.
Yang Ming to add Two 11,000 TEU Vessels, “YM Triumph” and “YM Truth” TA I WA N : Ya n g M i n g M a r i n e Tr a n s p o r t C o r p . (Yang Ming) will add two new 11,000 TEU container vessels, ‘YM Triumph’ and ‘YM Truth’. Both vessels will join THE Alliance’s Trans-Pacific routes with comprehensive coverage and efficient service by August. With the delivery of these newly built ships, the competitiveness of Yang Ming’s global fleet and service network will be enhanced significantly. In order to strengthen the company’s mid- to long-term operational efficiency, Yang Ming had ordered a total of fourteen 11,000 TEU newbuildings through long-term charter agreements with ship owners. YM Triumph and YM Truth are the first two ships from the series. This type of vessels has a nominal capacity of 12,690 TEU and is equipped with 1,000 plugs for reefer containers. With a length of 332.2 meters, a width of 48.2 meters, a draft of 16 meters, these vessels are designed to cruise at a speed up to 23 knots. This type of vessels adopts the twin-island design to increase loading capacity and navigational visibility to ensure more efficiency and safety. The ship hull form optimization and scrubber installation will further increase energy saving and reduce overall emissions. In addition, the
ships are designed with shorter length and beam, which makes them easier to maneuver during berthing or departure. The new dimensions enable these ships to call at major ports worldwide and pass through new Panama Canal with no restriction, and provide more flexibility in vessel deployment. In addition to the fourteen 11,000 TEU vessels to be delivered starting this July until 2022 Q3, Yang Ming will add another ten 2,800 TEU self-owned newly built ships to its fleet by 2021 Q2. These new vessels will lower the average age of its global fleet to achieve energy efficiency and unit cost reduction, and accelerate fleet optimization to proactively cope with the challenges and stricter environmental regulations faced by the fast-changing shipping industry. Atmanirbhar Bharat aims to make India into global nerve centre of supply chains NEW DELHI: India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ programme aims to transform Asia’s third largest economy into a global nerve centre of supply chains, a senior foreign ministry official said. Speaking at an event organised by the New Delhi-based PHD Chamber of Commerce on the ‘Role of Indian Economic Diplomacy in Making India Self Reliant’, Rahul Chhabra, secretary, economic relations, in the Indian foreign ministry urged Indian businesses to take advantage of ongoing government programmes like the lines of credit extended to countries to showcase Indian expertise in project, planning design and execution. India’s response has been to reboot and revamp the economy in a bid to emerge from the world’s largest lockdown, he said. The government’s focus has been to increase demand, boost farmers’ incomes and lend support to the micro, small and medium enterprises as part of its attempts to reinvigorate the economy.
In this context, India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ programme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May is not “inward looking” but aimed at “making us the global nerve centre of the supply chains,” he said, adding, “what is significant is that it shows the confidence of the government in the capabilities of the private sector.” Indian industry had already demonstrated its ability to respond to the global pandemic by scaling production and export of dr ugs required by countries around the world. Urging the local manufacturers to seize opportunities opening up, Chhabra said in the past five years, India had extended 300 lines of credit worth over $30 billion to over 60 countries. Indian industry could look at these lines of credit as opportunities given the provision that projects undertaken would be using as much as 75% of raw materials and content produced in India. The LoCs also offered market access to Indian industry in regions like
Africa, Central Asia and others that may not have been possible earlier, he said. Another opportunity that Indian industry could take advantage of was the regional and cross border connectivity projects that the Indian government was involved in, Chhabra said. These would act as “force multipliers flow of goods” for Indian manufacturers, he said. India was planning two more Integrated check posts for trade with Nepal besides two rail links, Chhabra said. With Bangladesh too, there were plans for multiple rail links including one connecting the port of Chattogram, he said. Besides this, Indian missions had identified 15 countries where India could scale up agriculture exports besides textiles, apparel, gems and j e w e l l e r y, C h h a b r a s a i d . A f r i c a presented a huge opportunity given its requirements for skilling people, he said, describing it as one of the “largest markets” and the “fastest growing region of the world.”
World's 1st Electrified Double-Stack Container Tunnel near Haryana may be operational in a year: Official NEW DELHI: A one-km-long tunnel has been cut through the Aravallis on the railway's Western Dedicated Freight Corridor near Haryana's Sohna with a plan to ply electric goods train with double-stack containers through it in the next 12 months, officials said Engineers had to blast through 2,500 to 500 million-years-old proterozoic rocks to build the world's first electrified double-stack container tunnel. The last blasting was completed recently.
"This means the excavation work for the one-kilometre tunnel is complete and it is now through and through," an official said. Once operational, a double-stack container goods train will be able to run at a speed of more than 100 kmph in this tunnel. It connects Mewat and Gurgaon districts of Haryana, and negotiates a steep gradient on the uphill and downhill slope of the Aravalli range. " Tu n n e l - b r e a k i n g c e r e m o n y marks the completion of the tunnel caving work at the WDFC's

WTO report shows members moving to facilitate imports even as trade restrictions remain high PARIS: “The report makes clear that a substantial share of world trade continues to be affected by new and accumulated importrestrictive measures, which is cause for concern at a time when economies will need trade to rebuild from the effects of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Director-General Roberto Azevêdo, who presented the report to WTO members. “On a more positive note, the report shows that members also introduced import-facilitating measures on an impressive scale, and have started to scale back trade restrictions introduced earlier in the pandemic,” he added. The report, which was reviewed at a meeting of the WTO’s Trade Policy Review Body, notes that 56 new trade-restrictive measures not related to the pandemic were implemented between mid-October 2019 and mid-May 2020 – mainly tariff increases, import bans, exports duties and stricter exports customs procedures. The new import restrictions covered traded merchandise worth an estimated USD 423.1 billion, the thirdhighest value since October 2012. WTO estimates indicate that the cumulative trade coverage of import-restrictive measures implemented since 2009, and still in force, amounts to USD 1.7 trillion or 8.7 per cent of world imports. This figure has grown steadily since 2009, both in value terms and as a percentage of world imports. Even if trade restrictions remain widespread, the report also finds evidence of WTO members moving towards tradefacilitating policies across sectors during the review period, with 51 new trade-facilitating measures not related to COVID -19 implemented. These measures mainly included the elimination or reduction of import tariffs, the elimination of import taxes, the simplification of customs procedures and the reduction of export duties. The trade coverage of non C OV I D - 1 9 r e l a t e d i m p o r t - f a c i l i t a t i n g measures was estimated at USD 739.4 billion, which is significantly higher than the USD 544.7 billion recorded in the previous report (from mid-May to mid-October 2019) and represents the second-highest figure since October 2012. The report shows that by mid-May 2020 WTO members implemented 256 trade and trade-related measures explicitly linked to the COVID -19 pandemic, with export bans accounting for the totality of the pandemicrelated export restrictions recorded. These COVID-19 related measures appeared to have come in two clearly identifiable waves. In the early stages of the pandemic, several of the measures introduced restricted the free flow of trade but as of mid-May 2020, 57 per cent of all measures were of a trade-facilitating nature. In early May, some members began to phase out export constraints, targeting products such as surgical masks, gloves, medicine and disinfectant. There is further evidence that a roll-back of other trade and trade-related measures taken in the early stages of the pandemic is also taking place. For instance, around 28 per cent of the COVID-19-specific trade-restrictive measures implemented by WTO members and observers had been repealed by mid-May. Prepared against the backdrop of COVID-19, the report does not yet reflect the full impact of the pandemic on trade. According to WTO data published on 22 June, estimates for the second quarter of 2020 indicate a year-on-year drop in world trade of around 18 per cent. Regarding general economic support measures, only 21 per cent of WTO members notified these actions in response to the Director-General’s request for information. From the limited information received, and from the research undertaken by the WTO, the current review period confirmed that WTO
members appeared to continue to implement such measures as part of their overall trade policy. Separate from these longstanding policies, the review period saw an unprecedented number of emergency support measures introduced by members in response to the economic and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of these measures appeared to be of a temporary nature. These include grants, monetary, fiscal and financial measures, measures targeting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), loans, credit guarantees and stimulus packages. Several measures were one-off grants while others included disbursements staggered over a few months and up to three years. Some of these measures form part of larger emergency rescue programmes worth several trillion US dollars. Key findings • This report covers new trade and traderelated measures implemented by WTO members between 16 October 2019 and 15 May 2020. This period included the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has already delivered an almost unprecedented shock to the global economy and caused significant social disruption. Although the full impact of the pandemic is not yet reflected fully in trade statistics, it is expected to be very substantial. • In its trade forecast of 8 April 2020, the WTO considered two scenarios for the crisis, one relatively optimistic and the other more pessimistic. Under the optimistic scenario, the volume of world merchandise trade would fall by 12.9 per cent and world GDP would decline by 2.5 per cent. Under the pessimistic scenario, trade would contract by 31.9 per cent and GDP would shrink by 8.8 per cent. As at mid-June, preliminary trade data and trade-related indicators for the first half of 2020 were more consistent with the optimistic scenario than the pessimistic one, but actual outcomes could easily fall within or even outside of the forecast range, depending on how the crisis unfolds. • World trade was already slowing before the pandemic struck, weighed down by heightened trade tensions and slowing global economic growth. Merchandise trade was down 0.1 per cent in volume terms in 2019, marking the first decline since 2009. Trade growth also slowed in nominal terms in 2019, as the dollar value of merchandise exports fell by 3 per cent to USD 18.89 trillion. Although commercial services exports increased by 2 per cent to USD 6.03 trillion in 2019, the pace of growth was down sharply from 9 per cent in the previous year. • Overall, WTO members and observers implemented 363 new trade and trade-related measures during the review period, of which 198 were of a trade-facilitating nature and 165 were trade-restrictive. Seventy per cent of these measures (256 in total) were linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of these 256 measures, 147 facilitated trade and 109 restricted trade. In the early stages of the pandemic, several of the measures introduced by WTO members and observers restricted the free flow of trade, principally for exports. But as at mid-May 2020, 57 per cent of all COVID-19-related measures were trade-facilitating. Around 28 per cent of the COVID-19-specific trade restrictions implemented by WTO members and observers had been repealed by mid-May. • Excluding COVID-19-related measures, WTO members and observers implemented 107 trade and trade-related measures during the review period. These included 51 new measures aimed at facilitating trade. The trade coverage of these non-COVID-19related import-facilitating measures implemented during the review period was estimated at USD 739.4 billion, the secondhighest figure for such measures since October 2012. WTO members and observers
also put in place 56 new trade-restrictive measures unrelated to the pandemic. The trade coverage for these new importrestrictive measures was estimated at USD 423.1 billion, the third-highest value recorded since October 2012. The trade coverage of import-restrictive measures implemented since 2009, and still in force, continues to increase. It is estimated that 8.7 per cent of world imports (USD 1.7 trillion) is affected by import-restrictive measures implemented since 2009 and still in force. • All WTO issues regularly covered by this report saw significant activity both before and after the outbreak of the pandemic. During the review period, 239 trade remedy actions were recorded for WTO members. The monthly average of trade remedy actions initiated was slightly higher than the average for the last eight years, while the monthly average of trade remedy terminations was the lowest over the same time span. During the review period, initiations of anti-dumping investigations accounted for around 80 per cent of all trade remedy initiations, which also includes safeguards and countervailing actions. • In services, most of the new measures introduced by WTO members and observers between mid-October 2019 and mid-May 2020 were trade-facilitating, but a number of new policies appeared to be trade-restrictive, including in areas related to foreign investment and in areas considered strategic or linked to national security. Most of the 99 ser vices measures adopted by WTO members and observers in response to the pandemic appeared to be trade-facilitating. • WTO members continued to implement general economic support measures as part of their overall trade policy, a fact confirmed by WTO Secretariat analysis despite governments’ low response rate with respect to these measures. In addition, WTO members and observers also implemented a large number of emergency support measures in response to the economic and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the 468 COVID-19-related general economic support measures identified, including monetary, fiscal and financial measures as well as preferential loans, credit guarantees and stimulus packages, collectively worth several trillion US dollars, appeared to be temporary in nature. These emergency support measures are central to governments’ strategies to address the pandemic-induced economic downturn and to prepare the ground for a strong recovery. Regular monitoring of support measures introduced in the context of the pandemic will be important for members to be able to track their evolution and effects as the world exits the health crisis and enters a recovery period. • WTO members continued to extensively use the Committee on Agriculture review process, and raised a total of 298 questions in relation to members’ individual notifications and on specific implementation matters. In relation to the COVID -19 pandemic, three WTO members informed the Committee of four temporary measures to respond to food security threats. • Work continued in the first months of 2020 to advance negotiations, particularly on fisheries subsidies, building on the decision taken by members at the 11th Ministerial Conference (Mc11). Groups of members also continued to pursue their discussions on other issues, including electronic commerce, investment facilitation, women’s economic empowerment, domestic regulation in services, and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). However, the delegations’ ability to engage in detailed negotiations has been constrained by restrictions on movement and the refocusing of priorities to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

Container vessel Ever Gifted carries out ‘transit crew’ change at Vizhinjam Port COCHIN: Container vessel Ever Gifted reached Colombo Anchorage (Sri Lanka) recently after carrying out a ‘transit crew change’ at Vizhinjam off Thiruvananthapuram, the second in the minor port’s history after another vessel Ever Globe completed the chore recently. As in the first case, the crew change got over in six hours, a major advantage that Vizhinjam can boast of thanks mainly to its proximity to the international East-West shipping route, says Captain AM Riyas, General Secretary of the Trivandrum Mariners’ Forum, Thiruvananthapuram. The crew change prospects here translates into savings in time and cost for passing container and tanker vessels.
Rises to challenge The Vizhinjam Port officials and staff have risen to the challenge of receiving big-sized vessels that ply the busy route and seem to have largely taken the required protocol in their stride with just two crew change events. The ‘transit crew change,’ i.e. crew change on the go at an Anchorage without having to formally call in at the port, has proved to be a smooth process here. In the case of Ever Gifted, the Captain did not even anchor the vessel and chose to drift it, given the state of the sea (referred to as ‘moderate, with wave heights of up to 13 ft) around Vizhinjam. In the process, it also provided the comfort of ‘lee’ (calm sea along the portside) for approaching smaller boats
carrying crew on-signers (those who are signing in duty afresh). Official port call avoided The entire operation was over in six hours which Captain Riyas described as ‘very fast, and superb.’ The fact that an official port call could be avoided is another a huge advantage because it could require a formal clearance from the port before the vessel can continue its sail. This also brings in port charges. But Ever Gifted could continue to sail with the port clearance issued from the port of origin, which is Rotterdam. Port clearance is a certificate endorsing that the voyage is an authorised one. It would have required Customs to come in from the port and conduct a search on board before clearing it afresh.
Carbon emissions are decreasing, says Shipping Industry report LONDON: Clean Cargo, a group of companies which describes itself as a “business-to -business leadership initiative” supporting emissions reductions from within the supply chain, has published its latest report which details a reduction in carbon emissions from container shipping in 2019. The 2019 report reveals a 5.6% reduction in carbon for dry containers in comparison to 2018 emissions and 2.5% for reefers from the 17 major carriers that are members of the group, and they comprise 85% of global carrier capacity,
according to a statement. In its report, Clean Cargo also breaks down emissions to trade lanes comparing the Pacific trades with Asia to North Europe. It shows that the United States (US) operations have seen double the carbon reductions of the European capacity. In particular, a 6% decline year-on-year is presented on the Pacific, while European trades see a 3% decrease. Other trades, Asia to-from Middle East and India / Asia to-from Mediter ranean / Black Sea both
reported 12% reductions in carbon emissions. Clean Cargo did not try to explain in its report why the trade with the largest ships had higher carbon levels, or how the Asia to Middle East and Mediterranean region had cut its emissions by four times those of the Asia to North Europe trade, given that many of the ships on these trades are the same vessels calling at interim ports en route from Asia to northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
Indian Railways to cover all wagons, locomotives and coaches under RFID tags by 2022 NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways has said that it will use radio-frequency identification tags (RFID) for tracking of all wagons by 2022. "A total of 23,000 wagons have been covered under the RFID project so far and the target is to cover all wagons by December 2022," Indian Railways said in a release.
Using RFID devices, it would be easier for the railways to know the exact position of wagons, locomotives and coaches. Cur rently, such data is maintained manually, which leaves scope for errors, it said. "While the RFID tag will be fitted in the rolling stock, trackside readers will
be installed at stations and key points along the tracks to read the tag from a distance of about two meters and transmit the wagon identity over a network to a central computer," it added. By using RFID, each moving wagon can be identified and its movement tracked.
Bangladesh starts work on Matarbari deep sea port DHAKA: Bangladesh’s cabinet committee appointed Japanese firm– Nippon Koei Company— to provide consultancy services for the construction of a deep seaport to handle its growing external trade in a deal worth $28m. The firm will work on detail design, tender assistance, and construction supervision of the JICA-funded proposed deep seaport at Matarbari area in southeastern Bangladesh. The deep seaport will have a 16-metre water draft and will be
able to accommodate 8,000 TEU postPanamax vessels, lessening Bangladesh’s dependence on the feeder vessels to ferry export-import goods from the hub ports in Singapore, Colombo and Port Klang. In mid-March Bangladesh’s top decision-making body ECNEC, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, approved construction of the seaport to accommodate deep-draft vessels. Presently, the country’s two seaports– Chittagong and Mongla—have up to
9.5-metre draft where vessels holding up to 2,000 TEU containers can anchor. According to a feasibility study of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) construction of the port will cost more than $2bn. JICA will provide a portion of the loans at 0.01% interest while some parts will be charged 0.9%. The deep seaport, whose main navigational channel will be 350-metres wide, is expected to be completed by December 2026.
India's Forex reserves climb $1.27 billion to record peak of $517.637 billion MUMBAI: India's foreign exchange reserves surged by $1.275 billion to touch a fresh lifetime high of $517.637 billion in the week to July 17, RBI data showed. In the previous week, reserves had swelled by $3.108 billion to $516.362 billion. The reserves had crossed the half-atrillion mark for the first time in the week
ended June 5, after it had increased by $8.223 billion to reach $501.703 billion. FCA was up by $1.245 billion to $476.880 billion in the reporting week, the central bank data showed. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the
reserves. Gold reserves were up by $13 million to $34.743 billion, as per the data. The special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rose $2 million to $1.455 billion. The country's reser ve position with the IMF also increased by $15 million to $4.560 billion during the reporting week.

Trade Union Leader ML Bellani passes away, Unions pay tributes GANDHIDHAM: Our great union leader and Ex DPT Trustee Comrade Manohar Bellani, General Secretary of Transport & Dock Workers Union (TDWU)- Kandla and All India Port & Dock Workers Federation breathed his last on 20th July 2020. He died due to COVID 19 complications. He was 65 years old and is survived by his wife, mother and 2 daughters. A trained civil engineer he worked in Kandla port for 37 years. The day he joined the Kandla Port Trust during the year 1978, it was the day of strike and he was associated on the same day as union member by the then General Secretar y and Board Member late Comrade L N Varyani. Thus it was his debut as union man. Then it was the legendary Dockers leader Comrade Manohar Kotwal, who trained and groomed young Bellani to become the General Secretary of the Union at the age of 33 years. Due to his long lasting efforts also at federation level, during 2018 it was the boosting of Comrade PM Mohmed Haneef with which he became the General Secretary of All India Port &Dock Workers Federation to serve the entire labour fraternity at National Level. A fiery leader in Kandla port, Comrade Bellani brought together various groups of workers and led many struggles to win rights and benefits for port employees and dock workers. He was responsible for organizing the contract and casual workers in dock work, who will always remember comrade Bellani for securing dignity and decent work conditions for them. When the global network operators came to Kandla port, comrade Bellani organized the workers and ensured that they got negotiated wage and work conditions. He was on the Board of Trustees of Kandla port as labour representative from 1998 to 31.3.2020. Comrade Bellani was always interested and active to be a part of the international Dockers movement. Something he learnt and inherited from his mentor Late Comrade Manohar. Kotwal. In the early days of the FOC campaign in India, Bellani volunteered to an FOC contact for his port in spite of his responsibilities as the Union General Secretary.

He groomed an activist of the Union to learn and take over responsibilities for the FOC Campaign and the ITF gave an Late Shri Manohar Bellani Inspectors position to the Union. It was Comrade Bellani who with the help of ITF steered the idea of setting up a Seafarers Welfare Centre in Kandla port. He got the port management to support his idea and the center till today is one of the best run in the country as it is self-sustaining through the seafarers welfare levy charged from each ship visiting the port. Comrade Bellani actively participated in all ITF programs and conferences. Comrade Manohar Bellani has left a void which will be difficult to fill. Fellow comrades in Transport & Dock Workers Union, Kandla and All India Port & Dock Workers Federation have a challenging task to carry forward his legacy and continue his unfinished tasks to protect and promote the rights of dock-workers. The entire members of Transport & Dock Workers Union Kandla and All India Port & Dock Workers Federation are in deep tears. It is an irreparable loss to Union and Federation. Late Shri ML Bellani was the warrior for workers, employees, Port and port users and even entire labour fraternity within and around Port.
