Global Trade to suffer massive losses from COVID-19 related shutdowns : BIMCO OSLO: No V-shaped recovery in sight after the large-scale shutdown of economic activity and the virus posing a risk to globalisation. The global economy and world trade are being battered by the widespread and comprehensive measures to limit the spread of Covid-19. Even though some countries have started easing their lockdown measures – such as in China – there has been no swift uptick in economic activity, leaving no hope of a swift global economic recovery. On 8 April, the World Trade Organization set out two scenarios and both predict trade dropping in every region and across all sectors. In its most optimistic view, global trade will fall by 13% in 2020, whereas its pessimistic outlook sees trade falling by 32% from 2019 levels, with a recovery in 2021 that will not return volumes to pre-pandemic levels. BIMCO believes the actual drop will be somewhere between these two figures, depending on how long it takes for the pandemic to be brought under control, and how governments around the world are able to coordinate and implement effective stimulus measures to get their economies back up and running.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has turned its 2020 growth forecast on its head, from + 3.3% growth before the outbreak, to a 3% contraction, although this prediction remains shrouded in uncertainty as the duration of the crisis and the speed at which nations can reverse lockdown measures remains unclear. This sudden and drastic contraction far exceeds that of the 2008 financial crisis; the Great Depression of the 1930s, unfortunately, looks like a closer comparison. In its April World Economic Outlook, the IMF forecasts the economy will normalise in 2021 with growth of 5.8%, bringing the global economy to an index level of 102.6 from 2019 levels. This forecast assumes that most containment efforts will be removed over the course of the second half of 2020. Europe The crisis, which took hold in Europe in March, has seen countries responding in different ways, although most have been on a scale ranging from a full lockdown and curfews to more restrained social distancing measures. Common to all countries, however, is that their economies have taken a massive hit. The largest economies in Europe are among those worst affected. Germany, the UK, France and Italy have all posted negative Q1 GDP growth: -2.2%, -2.0%, -5.8% and -4.7%, respectively. The European Union as a whole saw its economy shrink by 3.5% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with Q4 2019, although when looking year-on-year, the economy was 0.2% larger than in Q1 2019. The impact on shipping will be lower demand across all sectors. US The virus has devastated the economy in the United States, with the first estimate showing GDP shrinking by 4.8% in the first quarter (quarter on quarter). Personal consumption expenditure fell by 7.6%, exports are down by 8.7% and imports by 15.3% (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis). The outlook for the second quarter looks even worse. Weekly unemployment rates sky-rocketed at the start of the crisis and, although new filings appear to have peaked when they reached 6.9 million in the week ending 28 March, new claims are still coming in
by the million every week. The total hit 38.6 million after the first nine weeks of the crisis, with the unemployment rate rising to 14.7% in April from 4.4% in March. Asia In China, where the virus outbreak led to a much earlier shutdown than in the rest of the world, the easing of the measures has provided some insight into how the rest of the world could emerge from this crisis. China’s economy shrank by 6.8% in the first quarter, with it being harder hit than other countries because the containment efforts started earlier. The outlook for a strong recovery remains muted, as the after- effects of the lockdown in China and lower demand from the rest of the world take hold. The Chinese manufacturing PMI posted 50.1 in March, indicating only a tiny positive change from February and by no means a full recovery. Given the 40.3 contraction in February, there is a long way to go before activity returns to pre-Covid-19 levels. Despite a general return to work in Chinese factories, manufacturing activity contracted in April, albeit slowly, with an index reading of 49.4. This contraction is a result of the lower demand within China and the rest of the world, where goods delayed by the shutdown in China are arriving at their destination to find no demand and an increasing lack of storage space. A testament to this is the new export orders index out of China that in April stood at only 33.5 points. This is above the 28.7 it posted in February, but with March also posting a reading below 50 (46.4), the absolute volumes of exports remain much lower than before the crisis, with no hope of a rapid V-shaped recovery. It will take many consecutive months of PMI readings above 50 for manufacturing activity to return to pre-Covid-19 levels. Outlook BIMCO does not expect a V-shaped recovery of shipping demand and economic activity in general. Instead – after an alarmingly steep drop – the economy faces a long and uncertain climb back to growth. This is due to the following reasons: The speed and scale of the slowdown in economic activity in nations around the world are unprecedented, and, while the threat from the virus remains, the duration of this crisis and the speed at which the nations will emerge from the slowdown are highly uncertain. The massive stimulus packages materialising around the world – including wage compensation for workers otherwise at risk of unemployment, cheques from the government and deferred tax payments – all aim to ensure that as much of the economy as possible is still standing once the health crisis eases. Even so, an economic crisis will follow. The post-pandemic world will be faced with, among other things, lower consumer spending power, lower consumer confidence and lower overall demand, both domestically and internationally. As we have seen in China, a recovery in its domestic market is not enough to shore-up demand – it also needs a strong global economy. The slow re-opening of economies around the world also increases the risk of a new wave of infections and a return to more stringent lockdown measures, all of which will weigh heavily on government, business and consumer decisions until the crisis has passed. Global oil demand is massively impacted and lower demand will be felt by shipping, despite a short-term boost caused by the oil price war in April. A coordinated response is needed to ensure as smooth a recovery of globalisation and the global economy as possible. Countries must avoid turning towards protectionism. On this front, worrying signs are emerging. In particular, the trade war between the US and China – which had been experiencing a truce since the signing of the “Phase One” agreement in January – risks flaring back up, as the US threatens more tariffs on imports from China in a response to its handling of the Covid-19 outbreak. It goes without saying, this will only hamper both economies’ recoveries, at a time when they both need plenty of help rather than further stifling. However, increased tariffs are not the only threat to global trade. The virus has opened many people’s eyes to the vulnerability of international supply chains and their reliance on manufacturing plants on the other side of the world. This is the case for governments – many of which experienced shortages of critical equipment usually imported from abroad – as well as businesses. The exposure of these vulnerabilities will no doubt lead to changes in supply chains, with some benefiting the shipping industry, while others will harm it.

Container Lines ‘un-blank’ small number of sailings, says Sea-Intelligence LONDON: Container lines have started to ‘un-blank’ a small number that had been cancelled in Q2 according to analysts SeaIntelligence. Data from the analyst showed that the number of blank sailings announced by lines had remained relatively constant for the last five weeks, and this past week had seen lines actually reinstating, or un-blanking, a small
number of services. The latest move though does not yet indicate a rebound in the market as countries s t a r t c o m i n g o u t o f C OV I D - 1 9 lockdownss. “However, it is also clearly shown by the data that this is purely a very small change to the overall development in blank sailings. It cannot be seen as a rebound in demand, nor can it be constr ued as ‘strong’ demand,”
said SeaIntel CEO Alan Murphy. “It can only be seen as another indication that the carriers’ approach is to blank sailings aggressively to ensure decent utilization on the vessels that do indeed sail, and in the process avoid rate declines.” As yet lines have not announced any blank sailings for Q3 but these are expected to start being announced in the coming two weeks.
Container Shipping faces its largest ever drop in TEU-Miles : Clarkson Research LONDON: Clarkson Research is reporting that container shipping faces its most significant drop in TEUMiles ever. “The container sector seems amongst the most exposed to the impacts of Covid-19, with consumer demand in key regions under significant pressure, and the decline in box trade in TEU-miles in 2020 (projected at -10.3%) expected to be the steepest on record,” researchers at the Londonheadquartered outfit wrote in the company’s most recent weekly report. The data is backed up from
Tokyo recently where Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), the lead shareholder in container line Ocean Network Express (ONE), reported its full year results. On the box outlook, NYK reported: “Recently, cargo volumes on the North America and Europe trades have fallen by more than 20% as a result of the contraction in economic activity following the citywide lockdowns in the US and Europe. However, they are expected to start to gradually recover, and looking at the full-year average, cargo volumes are forecast to fall by slightly over 10%
compared to last year.” Commenting on the Clarkson data, Lars Jensen from Sea Intelligence Consulting, said that in terms of demand, the decline in box volumes this year is set to match the impact of the global financial crisis. However, unlike for the financial crisis, freight rates are holding, Jensen said. “The outlook for 2020 cannot at this moment be said to be as bad as what we saw a decade ago from a portability perspective,” Jensen stressed.
IAPH report says 45% of ports see drop in Containership calls TOKYO: A weekly report from the International Association of Ports and Harbors - IAPH-WPSP Port Economic Impact Barometer shows that the COVID-19 pandemic impacts ports differently according to the regions. T h e r e p o r t a u t h o r e d b y Po r t Economics members Theo Notteboom a n d T h a n o s Pa l l i s s h o w s t h a t cancellations, mainly on routes to the Far East, are clearly affecting container ships. Some 45% of ports report that the number of containership calls fell by between 5% and 25% compared to 34% the previous week, while 8% of ports faced a significant drop, over 25% in containership calls. Ports reporting reductions of more than 25% in calls in the cargo ship category increased to 16%; less than half of the ports mention that the number of calls of other cargo ships is fairly stable compared to a normal situation. In North America, boxship calls have deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks. This week, 71% of ports responding to the survey have experienced a 5%-25% reduction in container ship calls, a figure well above the world average.
H o w e v e r, t h e W P S P C o v i d - 1 9 Working Group expects a recovery by the end of May/beginning of June for some ports in Asia in terms of container shipping services, with a corresponding positive impact six to eight weeks later in regions such as Europe and North America. "We are beginning to see some lines reintroduce services on the main EastWest routes that they had previously neglected. We have also received reports from East Africa of a return of liner services out of Asia this week, which is a positive development,” explained Notteboom. More and more ports are reporting under-utilisation of liquid bulk storage facilities, 26%. The proportion of ports with higher levels of use of liquid bulk storage facilities has fallen to 13%, the lowest figure since the start of the survey. A similar development is observed in the solid bulk sector, 32% of ports report under-utilisation of facilities compared to a range of 17% to 25% in the last six weeks. The proportion of ports with higher levels of utilisation in solid bulk storage has decreased to 10%, also the lowest figure to date.
North American ports are experiencing fewer delays in inland transit and greater availability of port workers. The hinterland transport situation in that region is, on average, much less disrupted than it is worldwide, particularly for trucks entering and leaving port areas. Except for railways, the number of ports that have faced hinterland transport disruptions has remained below 20%. In addition, North American ports generally report few problems with the availability of port workers. "The members of our WPSP Covid-19 Working Group have given us a unique insight into the changing impact of the contagion on ports in different regions of the world. We now see Asian ports fully operational and with promising signs in terms of recovery. European ports are gradually returning to the 'new normal', while ports in regions such as South America and Africa are having to adapt to the contagion, which in many cases is reaching its peak there,” said IAPH Director General Patrick Verhoeven. “We expect more ports in the Middle East and Asia to participate in the next survey.”

In the first phase, contribution was made to PM Cares to assist government’s massive efforts for national preparedness and response for COVID-19. To support the front liners, 1000 bottles of 100ml and 30 bottles of 500ml sanitizers were given for Mumbai Police personnel. In Dubai, in partnership with Dubai Municipality and UAE Food Network, meals were given for 6 days to 275 sanitization workers of the National Disinfectin program across the city each night during the campaign. Health workers are the real heroes of the fight against Covid-19. Transworld Group procured 200 face shields from Imaginarium and provided to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation hospital healthcare workers. To meet the urgent need of PPE kits to safeguard the health workers who have been protecting and safeguarding people round the clock with immense care and compassion, in collaboration with InDeed – Dentsu Aegis Network (India), 300 PPE kits were provided to 300 health care workers through engaging with Maharashtra Health Department, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The lockdown in India and UAE to control the spread of Covid-19 exacerbated the situation of daily wagers as they lost wages and remain stranded without access to food and basic hygiene. To avert the immediate hunger and
starvation, the support was extended to provide ration to 500 families of daily wage workers residing in Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi in Mumbai who is the hardest hit and form most vulnerable households with the support of GiveIndia platform implemented by ActionAid India. In Karnataka, in partnership with Hasiru Dala, support of one month dry ration was extended to 500 women led waste picker families belonging to vulnerable groups such as women waste pickers diagnosed with long term illness, pregnant women, lactating mothers, single parent women and senior waste pickers. To support the contractual port workers in Kolkata, 10 days of nutritious meals were given to 400 with a local NGO partner- Parnasree Jeewandeep Sewasansthan. This year annual Ramadan (The Holy month) initiatives of Transworld Group in the GCC were also diverted towards reaching out to people affected by Covid-19 and the resultant lockdown. Adhering to Government guidelines, in Dubai, we provided dry ration for a month to 100 people in partnership with Smart Life and Community Development Authority. The ration packages were distributed by Dubai Police volunteers to people identified as most vulnerable by the UAE Government as part of their 10 Million Meals program. We also partnered with Jebel Ali Free Zone Area (JAFZA) to distribute 900 meals to the workers living in quarantine camps and in isolation. Further in Qatar, we distributed 115 meals to workers in labor quarantine camps in partnership with Qatar Red Crescent Society.
