Deendayal Port Trust lost one Senior Leader of H.M.S. Union on 20th July, A great loss to Transport & Dock Workers Union H.M.S. GANDHIDHAM: Indian National Port & Dock Workers Federation General Secretary Mr. Mohan K. Aswani in press release expressed deep condolence on the sudden and untimely demise of Mr. Manohar L. Bellani who was General Secretary of Port Federation, Local Union & Trustee for many years. He was also B.W.N.C. alongwith me in the Port Development as member for many years. Port Workers & Union have contributed immense efforts in Development, Cargo Handling & no strike at Deendayal Port for last 20 years. Both of us have contributed lot of things through Board of Trustees in last many years. Deendayal Port since 1990 has continuously improved in Cargo Handling Capacity. With full
co-operatation to Trade Shipping Fraternity in their efforts, Kandla stood No. 1 amongst 12 Major Port for last 10 years. Kandla Port Shipping Companies has extended full support to Port Workers and it’s Union. Shri Aswani conveyed Digital Condolence to the Family of Late Mr. Manohar L. Maersk launches APSEZ becomes the 1st Indian Port Arabian Star Service to sign up for Science Based Targets To call Hazira - Commencing August 17th, 2020
COPENHAGEN: In order to make the supply chain more efficient both in terms of cost and time, day-in and day-out, Maersk has introduced the Arabian Star service. The Arabian Star commencing August 17th, 2020 out of Port Klang will connect the Far East Asia, Indian Subcontinent and Middle East. The rotation will be: Port Klang - Singapore - Tanjung Pelepas - Jebel Ali Dammam – Doha – Hazira - Colombo. With the introduction of these, existing Arabian Express will be terminated. The last sailing of Arabian Express will be JOSEPHINE MAERSK (voyage 034W), estimated to depart from Colombo August 21st.
Initiative (SBTi)
AHMEDABAD: Strengthening India’s commitment to the 'Paris Climate Agreement’, APSEZ has signed up for the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Through SBTi, companies are responding by committing to set science-based emissions reduction targets — across their entire value chain — that are consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Committed companies have 24 months to have their targets approved and published by the SBTi. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Con’d. Pg. 17

Nine leading businesses including Maersk launch new initiative to accelerate progress to a net zero future COPENHAGEN: The heads of nine companies has recently announced the establishment of a new initiative to accelerate the transition to a net zero global economy. The initiative, known as Transform to Net Zero, intends to develop and deliver research, guidance, and implementable roadmaps to enable all businesses to achieve net zero emissions. The Initiative will be led by founding members including A.P. Moller – Maersk, Danone, Mercedes-Benz AG, Microsoft Corp., Natura &Co, NIKE, Inc., Starbucks, Unilever, and Wipro, as well as Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The Initiative is supported by BSR, which is serving as the Secretariat for the Initiative. Transform to Net Zero will focus on enabling the business transformation needed to achieve net zero emissions no later than 2050, in addition to driving broader change with a focus on policy, innovation, and finance. The outputs of the initiative will be widely available to all, though additional companies may join. The Initiative intends to complete the outputs of this work by 2025. The work will be led by the following principles: 1. Focused on transformation: Delivering on our individual commitments and translating into action, which will include corporate strategy, governance and accountability, finance and operations, risk management, procurement, innovation and R&D, marketing, and public affairs. 2. Led by science and best practice data and methods: Committed to standardized approaches to achieve what the best available science requires for a 1.5°C world; committed to improving the quality and availability of research, data, and tools for all; committed to the highest return for the climate on investment.
3. Leveraging existing efforts: Committed to open collaboration with existing net zero initiatives (sign-on, advocacy, sectorial, methodology efforts) to leverage existing work and advance business transformation to net zero. 4. Strong governance and oversight: At the highest levels of the company, governance and oversight structures will work to achieve net zero, including through developing innovative products, services, and business models. 5. Robust reduction and removal across the extended enterprise: Net zero requires emissions reductions across the entire value chain, including impact of products and services and supply chain. Net zero requires us to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions aligned with the latest science and increase our capacity for GHG removals in the near term to be the path to get companies—and the world—to net zero no later than 2050 to ensure a stable climate, and will mean a mix of climate-positive actions should be pursued. 6. Investment in innovation: Substantial commitment and willingness to invest in and accelerate innovation to achieve net zero transformation, including partnering with others. 7. Policy engagement: Advancing public policy that enables and accelerates progress towards net zero, and engagement with bodies such as trade associations to achieve this objective. 8. Transparency and accountability: Public reporting and disclosure on progress towards net zero transformation to key stakeholders, including investors, customers, consumers, and where required?regulators; sharing information with all stakeholders on good practice to net zero transformation. 9. Just and sustainable transition: We know that marginalised groups and low-income communities bear the greatest impacts of climate change. Therefore, we will help enable conditions needed to achieve effective, just, and sustainable climate solutions for people of all gender, race, or skills.

CBIC & CBDT sign MoU to facilitate smoother bilateral exchange of data NEW DELHI: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), for data exchange between the two organisations. The MoU was signed by S h r i P r a m o d C h a n d r a M o d y, Chairman, CBDT, and Shri M. Ajit Kumar, Chairman, CBIC, in the presence of senior officers from both the organizations. This MoU supersedes the MoU signed between CBDT and the erstwhile Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) in the year 2015. Significant developments have taken place since the signing of earlier MoU in 2015 including introduction of GST, incorporation of GSTN and change in the nomenclature of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) to Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Changed circumstances, including advancements in technology, are duly incorporated in the MoU signed today. This MoU will facilitate the sharing of data and information between CBDT
and CBIC on an automatic and regular basis. In addition to regular exchange of data, CBDT and CBIC will also exchange with each other, on request and spontaneous basis, any information available in their respective databases which may have utility for the other organisation. The MoU comes into force from the date it was signed and is an ongoing initiative of CBDT and CBIC, who are
already collaborating through various existing mechanisms. A Data Exchange Steering Group has also been constituted for the initiative, which will meet periodically to review the data exchange status and take steps to further improve the effectiveness of the data sharing mechanism. The MoU marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation and synergy between the CBDT and CBIC.
Routeing system in South West Indian waters separated for Merchant and Fishing Vessels NEW DELHI: Meeting the long–pending demand, the Ministry of Shipping has separated the operation routes of merchant vessels and fishing vessels in South West Indian waters, considering the safety and efficiency of navigation. The Arabian Sea around the south-west coast of India is a busy sea route, with substantial number of merchant ships passing through the area, along with large number of fishing vessels operating in the
area. It sometimes causes accidents between them, resulting in damage of property and environmental pollution, and in several instances has resulted in loss of lives also. Union Minister for State for Shipping (I/C) Shri Mansukh Mandaviya has said that the decision reflects our commitment for ensuring ease of navigation in Indian waters. “It will also ensure improvement in avoidance of collision, ease in flow of
traffic along with safety of life at sea and enhance protection of marine environment. It is a very proactive and positive step of Directorate General of Shipping which will efficiently regulate shipping traffic in this region,” Shri Mandaviya said. The coordinates of the routeing system in south-west of Indian waters is notified by DG Shipping through M.S. Notice-11 of 2020. The new routes come into force with effect from 1st August 2020.
Government to recalibrate FTA strategy to ensure economic and strategic benefits NEW DELHI: The Government is recalibrating its strategy on entering into free trade agreements (FTAs) in a bid to ensure that the treaties provide economic and strategic benefits. Separately, the focus is on alliances with “peaceful” countries, especially those with which India does not have a significant trade deficit. Discussions have begun at the highest level with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister (EAC-PM) Bibek Debroy leading the deliberations on a revamped strategy.
The three of them met recently, which coincided with external affairs minister S Jaishankar’s statement that F TAs haven’t helped India build capacity. “I think there are ways of engaging the world which do not necessarily have to be FTA-centric,” the Minister said at an event. There is expected to be greater thrust to FTAs with Australia and the European Union, with the UK and the US among countries with which India will engage more aggressively, while recognising that there is no need to rush into a deal. Goyal has already indicated a keenness to rework the agreements with
Asean and Japan, as imports are seen to have gained more than exports due to a sharp reduction in tariffs. At the same time, India was expected to benefit more on the services front, with software professionals and nurses getting easy access to markets such as Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia. Off late, Singapore has been a miser in giving out fresh visas, citing domestic issues, while Japan has denied access to Indian nurses, pointing out a lack of language skills. What has also complicated matters is the presence of Chinese companies in Asean countries, which use the benefit of lower tariffs to route goods into India.

APSEZ becomes the 1st Indian Port to sign up for Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Con’d. from Pg. 2 The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in sciencebased target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. Over 800 companies have committed to set science-based emissions reduction targets. APSEZ has also signed commitment as a supporter to the Ta s k f o r c e o n C l i m a t e R e l a t e d Financial Disclosure (TCFD), which develops voluntary, consistent climaterelated financial risk disclosures for use by companies in providing information to investors, lenders, insurers, and other stakeholders. A total of 16 Indian companies are supporting the TCFD out of which two are Adani Group’s subsidiaries. As a group, we are committed to a sustainable future driven by continuous inter ventions in our processes and operations. APSEZ is committed to SBTi and TCFD to ensure emission reductions are
achieved with defined targets towards the goal of becoming carbon neutral. This is another significant step demonstrating the Adani Group's stated commitment of contributing to India's COP21 targets and global climate goals." said Mr. Karan Adani, Chief Executive Officer and Whole Time Director of APSEZ. “We have less than 10 years to fundamentally change our economies or we will face catastrophic consequences,” said Lise Kingo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, one of the SBTi partners. “For the first time, we are seeing business and climate leaders coalesce around a common call-toaction, sending a powerful signal that science-based target setting presents a significant opportunity for businesses to step up when it comes to tackling climate change and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.” Paul Simpson, CEO of CDP, one of the SBTi partners, said: “The science is clear: in order to limit the
catastrophic impacts of climate change, we must ensure warming does not exceed 1.5°C. The ambition is high but it’s achievable — and science-based targets give companies a roadmap for getting there. Corporations worldwide have an unprecedented opportunity to be at the very forefront of the transition to a net-zero economy — and there is no time to lose.” APSEZ is one out of a total of 43 Indian companies who have signed a commitment letter to SBTi. A total of 909 companies are taking sciencebased climate action and 392 companies have approved sciencebased targets through SBTi. The Adani group has also set a goal to become the world’s largest solar power company by 2025 and the world’s largest renewable power company by 2030, through achieving an installed generation capacity of 25 GW of renewable power by 2025 which in turn will see a total investment of $15 billion in the renewable energy space over the next 5 years.
Coronavirus pandemic a catalyst for Shipping’s Digitalization : Survey LONDON: The coronavirus pandemic is proving to be a catalyst for the digitalization of shipping, prompting ocean supply chain stakeholders to abandon manual processes and embrace automation to drive business growth, a new survey by transport management systems provider Haven Inc shows. The survey found that global business lockdowns had highlighted the time and cost savings available to decision-makers willing to make the leap away from traditional management processes heavily reliant on paperwork. 35% of respondents said the use of manual processes caused delays, 30% said quotations took too long while 20% complained that booking processes were cumbersome. 42% of survey takers also reported they were now looking to upgrade their systems by investing in the further digitalization of their international shipment processes. 37% were looking to upgrade in 1-3 years, 12% hoped to upgrade in 3-5 years, and, 8% were either not looking at all to upgrade or to do so later than five years from now. “With so many people working from home during the pandemic, companies were finding new ways to
trade and this was opening their eyes to digital solutions across their businesses,” Brad Klaus, Chief Executive Officer of Haven, commented. “This need extends to digital transport management solutions, particularly for those who are dealing with international shipments. From a management point of view, once you see the benefits, it’s hard to go back to manual systems and mountains of paper.” The sur vey was conducted independently for Haven by logistics and freight educational portal Shipping & Freight Resource. The majority of respondents (67 %) were freight and logistics decisionmakers in Director/VP and C-Level positions while others held middlemanagement and super visory positions (28.9%). Other survey takers worked in freight and shipping operations and administration including, documentation, analytics, and corporate counsels. 51% of participants used both air and sea modes for international shipments. 41% used only sea, 6% used only air and 2% operated in only the U.S. domestic market. 56% reported wanting to increase the efficiency of their booking management and 40% were on the
lookout for a better freight audit solution. 61% of respondents said they wanted to improve their quotation management and track and trace visibility, while 60% were looking to improve their document management. “We want freight invoice control and cost calculation for a shipment with the easy understanding of the margin,” said one respondent. H o w e v e r, w h i l e l e a n a n d automated processes were viewed by most respondents as the best solution, a number of perceived obstacles to implementation were reported. 35% of participants said budget was a major barrier to the automation of freight operations, while 21% said there was a lack of adequate technology. 19% felt the struggle was a lack of internal expertise, 13% said it was due to lack of internal resources, and 10% stated it was due to a lack of support from leadership. “I think the survey proves that the current pandemic has made it crystal clear that it is possible to streamline p r o c e s s e s u s i n g t e c h n o l o g y, ” Klaus said. “When trade is transparent, deals close faster, ships sail at capacity, and the entire supply chain benefits.”

GAC acquires Ahlers Singapore Container DUBAI: GAC has further strengthened ties with Belgium-based logistics services provider Ahlers nv ( “A h l e r s ” ) w i t h a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to acquire the container logistics business unit of its Singapore subsidiary. The acquisition of Ahlers Singapore’s container logistics business unit helps GAC boost its foothold in Asia’s top logistics hub and enhances its service portfolio to offer even greater value to its customers. “This MOU builds on our long-standing relationship with Ahlers,” says Lars Bergström, Group Vice President of the Asia Pacific and Indian Subcontinent region. “It’s a great match, as both companies focus on creating innovative and value-adding solutions to our customers. Agility and innovation are key to survival in the highly competitive logistics industry.” Henrik Althén, Managing Director of GAC Singapore adds that the container logistics business will give the company even greater control over the entire supply chain: “Container logistics are an integral part of the supply chain solutions we offer to our customers. It complements our sea freight and contract logistics services, giving us the expanded bandwidth and enhanced capability to look after the entire supply chain more efficiently and effectively.”

APM Terminals Pipavav celebrates World Youth Skills Day 2020 PIPAVAV: APM Terminals, Pipavav celebrated the World Youth Skills Day on July 15th, 2020. The celebrations comprised a webinar and an essay writing contest. The webinar on ‘Skills for a Resilient Youth’ was conducted by Mr Prabhash Chandra Dubey, (Expert Member, Automotive Skills Development Council & Construction Skills Development Council; Former member of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand Rural Livelihood Mission) with 300 young individuals in attendance. Mr Dubey advised the attendees to be flexible and productive. He elaborated on the importance of ‘reskilling’ to stay relevant and accentuated on the role of skill development in fundamental sectors like in IT, BPO, Electrical, Banking, Nursing etc. Mr Dubey applauded the efforts of APM Terminals Pipavav for encouraging self-reliance among the young crowd by skilling them. The port has trained around 1035 young men and women in various essential skills in fields like Nursing, Electrical, two-wheeler mechanics, BPO, Banking and Finance, Fitter & Fabrication etc. 80% of the skilled personnel have been employed in numerous fields across companies and hospitals in Surat, Rajkot, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad among others. The port also conducted an essay writing event on ‘Atma-Nirbhar Bharat & Kaushal’, with a submission of over
a hundred essays. The participants phrased their perception on skill development and its necessity for a self-reliant India. Commenting on the occasion, Mr Jakob Friis Sorensen, Managing Director APM Terminals Pipavav said,’’ At APM Terminals Pipavav, we endeavour to skill more and more youngsters and adequately equip them to be self-reliant. I am pleased to see that our efforts are showing positive results, shaping a route towards a self-reliant India.’’ Previously, the skill-development initiatives undertaken by APM Terminals Pipavav had the honour of receiving the ‘Mukhya Mantri Apprenticeship Yojana’ award for training the local youth. Designated by the UN General assembly in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day is an opportunity for young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, and public/private sector stakeholders to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.
