After the tedious period of Covid Pandemic, members from maritime fraternity are ver y enthusiastic to showcase their hard ear ned performance done over this period to acclaim their superiority over others. This has been quite evident from the kind of responses in nomination filing that Daily Shipping Times is receiving each passing Day.
APM Terminals Pipavav breaks its own record on berth productivity on MECL service PIPAVAV: APM Terminals Pipavav, the first port to be connected to the DFC in India; has broken its own record of berth productivity on MECL ser vice. The port achieved the BP of 143.26 moves per hour on Maersk Sentosa of MECL service. The port outpaced its own mark of achieving Cont’d. Pg. 15 140 BP moves on the same service last year.

FFFAI announces FFFAI YLP Award to Avishkar Srivastava from PDP International, nominates for FIATA YLP YIFFA Award Anand Sheth from Sarjak Container Lines announced as runner up NEW DELHI: The Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations in India (FFFAI), a member of International Federation of Freight For warders Associations (FIATA), representing India, has announced the winner form India for t h e F I A T A Yo u n g L o g i s t i c s Professionals (YLP) Award 2022 to Avishkar Srivastava from PDP International and has been nominated for FIATA YLP YIFFA Award. Also, Anand Sheth from Sarjak Container Lines has been announced as runner up. There were 17 more contestants from across different regions of India participated in the International YLP Award 2022, organised by FFFAI to promote and nominate Young Logistics Professionals from India to contest in the highly prestigious International Award, being organised by FIATA along with TT Club. FFFAI Chairman Mr Shankar Shinde and FFFAI Team congratulates the winner, runner up and all participants for their efforts and conveys best wishes to all other participants. “I am happy to note the enthusiasm of the participants to get the FIATA YLP YIFFA Award for India. This will showcase the Indian youth talent in Logistics and also create leadership position,” said the FFFAI Chairman. Other participants were: Mr Shanmugam Alagunta, Mr Ragesh Balan Pillai, Mr Pradeak Krishnamurthy, Mr Tarun Masani, Ms Shweta Dogra, Ms Kamini Gupta, Mr Aditya Modi, Mr Anand Murugesan, Mr Arunachalam Shanmuga Sundaram, Mr Abhiyank Govil, Mr Aashish Rajaram Prajapati, Ms Sayah Akhter, Ms Sushma Shetty, Mr Pankaj Kanti Baridun, Mr Wageesh Gahtori; Mr Ishan Khurana and Mr Yash Radia. This would be good learning for participant for again participating in next year contest and look forward for their next year’s nomination too. The Award attracts and encourages next generation to look for opportunities in Logistics Industry by choice to have new innovative talent in this logistics industry. FIATA has also made available the previous dissertation for participants benefit. FFFAI had invited self-nomination from Logistics Service providers to encourage/promote young logistics professionals to have international exposure by demonstrating domain knowledge as regard to logistics business and operations. Towards which there was good overwhelming responses out of which 19 applications were qualified for the first round to identify 5 candidates best candidates for dissertation process to complete with qualify for final round of which the finalist were declared after interaction and deliberation. The candidates in the final list were given the opportunity to present on their dissertation topic followed by a Q & A session with the jury of panellists consisting of the Past Chairman & Advisor to FFFAI – Mr. R Radhakrishnan; Chairman of FFFAI – Mr. Shank ar Shinde; Chair man Elect –

Based on the conjoint views and unanimous decision, the jury selected Mr. Avishkar Srivastava as FFFAI nominee to participate further with FIATA at the YLP Award 2022. To participate in the nomination process pertaining to the YLP Award, the principal criteria was that the candidates participating company should be Member of FFFAI having two years full time experience in Freight Forwarding, would have to submit the dissertation on the topic stipulated by FIATA, and fulfil the condition stipulated in the registration form. The dissertation is an opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate a range of skills and qualities that are needed to pursue a successful career in international forwarding and supply chain logistics. It would demonstrate the knowledge base of the contestants concerning the following aspects: Identifying a problem or business opportunity; gathering relevant information on a specific situation; identifying possible changes or enhancements for the benefit of the forwarder or the client; evaluating the information and drawing one’s own conclusions; deciding what action should be taken; making reasoned and costed recommendations; quality of innovation and initiative; description and valuation of the situation, discussion of problems, opportunities, faults, relevant issues, benefits, costs, etc. And, thereby, the participants would get the opportunity to have international acquaintances for their company as well as their own career building in the logistics domain. Major Chinese Ports Container volume falls 10.6% in early Feb BEIJING: Container volume at eight major Chinese ports declined 10.6% yearon-year in early February coinciding with the lunar new year holidays. Export container volume declined 8.3% while the domestic volume dropped 20.2 % due to many factories were closed for the Chinese New Year in early
February. Cargo throughput at major coastal hub ports declined 7.5% year-onyear while international trade cargo throughput dropped 7.6%. Crude oil shipments at major coastal ports declined 11.6% year-on-year while the port inventory increased 2.3%. Metal ore shipments at major Chinese
ports increased 0.8% year-on-year, among which the port of Rizhao posted over 20% growth rate. The Chinese New Year brought about further decrease of cargo volume at three major Yangtze river ports. Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing’s cargo throughput for early Feb declined 26% while the container volume dropped 32.2%.

Exports up 26.40% to $25.33 billion during February 1-21 NEW DELHI: The country’s merchandise exports rose by 26.4 per cent to USD 25.33 billion this month till February 21 on account of healthy performance by sectors including gems and jewellery, engineering, textiles and chemicals, according to the commerce ministry data.
The exports during February 1-21 last year stood at USD 20.04 billion. The outbound shipments during February 15-21 grew by 26.87 per cent to USD 9.02 billion as compared to USD 7.11 billion in February 15-21 last year, the preliminary data showed.
Cumulatively, exports during AprilJanuary 2021-22 rose by 46.53 per cent to USD 335.44 billion as against USD 228.9 billion in the same period last year. The ministry is hopeful that the exports would cross the USD 400 billion target by the end of this fiscal.
Textiles exports can touch $100 bn from current $40 bn in 5 years NEW DELHI: After being outpaced by Bangladesh and Vi e t n a m a n d h a m m e r e d b y t h e COVID -19 pandemic, India's garment factories are slowly coming b a c k t o n o r m a l c y. T h e t e x t i l e industry is also facing challenges like rising cotton prices and labour shortages. Despite all this the sector has the potential to rise its exports from the current $40 billion to $100 billion in the next five years. The country's apparel industry can focus on vertical integration to increase its scale and size and benefit from the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, this was stated by Textiles Secretary Upendra Prasad Singh at the 44th Foundation Day of Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC). In a statement, Singh, said, “Apparel and garmenting is not very investment-
centric but it is important from the employment point of view. Perhaps, there is a need for backward integration and more of you can get into integrated value-chain like spinning and weaving." Along with the PLI scheme, the government is committed to make the P rime Minister Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) scheme a success. Idea is not to just have a world class infrastructure but also a thriving industry there, the statement added. Stating that textile has always been among the top priorities of the government, the secretary stated, “The demand continues to be robust and the China plus one sourcing strategy by the west is certainly a great opportunity for us.” AEPC Chairman Narendra Goenka shared its journey since its
establishment in 1978 from a quota monitoring and export promotion body to the Council that today offers services ranging from skilling, assessment, market intelligence, advocacy, capacity building programs on financial risks, compliance management, IPR issues, AI and technology driven production innovations, lean and six sigma, circularity, sustainability, among others. In a statement, Singh said that it all depended on how good, efficient and integrated the Indian apparel industry is and how it increases its size and scale. “Let us not get into just the macro figure, let us get into the micro level. Let us go product by product and country by country. We should be in a position to breach $20 billion apparel exports by next fiscal or the year after that,” he commented.
CEPA : Trade pact with UAE seen to boost exports of agri products, feels APEDA NEW DELHI: India’s new comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with the UAE will come as a shot in the arm for exporters of buffalo meat, fruits and vegetables, groundnut, dairy products and assorted processed food items to the Western Asian country. Removal or reduction of tariffs under the pact, which will take effect from May, could allow these exporters to gain an edge over competitors from Brazil, Australia and Pakistan.
“We will be tapping opportunities in expanding export of buffalo meat, dairy products, cucumbers, gherkins, processed foods, alcoholic beverages and natural honey following the signing of CEPA,” M Angamuthu, chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (Apeda), said recently. The UAE is India’s second-largest export destination for agriculture commodities after Bangladesh. In 202021, India’s agricultural product exports
to the UAE stood at $1,926 million and in the first three quarters of 2021-22, the exports to the country crossed $1,865 million. Currently, most exports of agricultural products to the UAE are subject to a 5% duty. In the last couple of years, India has been facing stiff competition from Brazil, Pakistan and Australia for increasing exports of buffalo meat to the UAE and has been facing competition from China and Argentina for exports of groundnut.

Tripura signs MoU with IWAI to set up Inland Waterways Terminal to boost Indo-Bangla connectivity AGARTALA: The Tripura government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to set up a inland waterways terminal at Srimantapur in Sepahijala district, where a test run was held in September, 2020 for Indo-Bangla inland waterways transport. The project is expected to boost the state’s ambitious waterways transport, connectivity and border trade with Bangladesh. After signing the MoU, Union minister for ports and shipping Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, “Took part in an important MoU signing ceremony between @IWAI_ShipMin, @ L PA I _ O f f i c i a l a n d Tr i p u r a G o v t a l o n g w i t h C M Shri @BjpBiplab in Agartala. 10 new Jetties will be built on the Gomati river which will give more Gati to Indo-Bangladesh trade via waterways”. He also said in a separate tweet that Tripura holds huge potential in its waterways and that the central government would conduct studies and hydrological survey on the other rivers of the state and depending on the feasibility, take further action to develop them. Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for facilitating the project, CM Biplab Kumar Deb later said in a tweet that connectivity development in the NE region is facilitated by the ‘double engine’ government in the state and the centre. Export-import trade with Bangladesh commenced in Tripura in 1995. Tripura currently imports goods worth Rs 20,000 crore from Bangladesh and other Indian states
annually. Among these, goods worth Rs. 645 crore is imported from Bangladesh. Tripura, on the other hand, exports Rs. 2000 crore worth of goods such as rubber, bamboo, tea and pineapple. The huge trade deficit is due to abnormally high import duty apparatus on the other side of the border, absence of many commodities abundant here in the list of good allowed for export and port restrictions. The state government is hopeful of turning the tables with the newly launched inland waterways connectivity route with Bangladesh, since the inland waterways route through Tripura could provide an alternative to the current arrangements of importing goods through Haldia Port in Bengal, 1,200 Kms away. Chittagong port in Bangladesh is located much closer, at a distance of 600 Kms.
Container shortage easing, but demand remains high LONDON: Shippers and carriers are starting to see a return to normalcy in container availability after the shortages that helped to fuel supply chain disruption last year. Leading box equipment lessors report that increased production of containers – coupled with stabilizing prices – has alleviated some of the supply chain constraints witnessed in recent months. Though supply is expected to meet demand this year, the container market remains tight. “We expect container supply will better keep pace with demand in 2022 due to increased new container production volumes, and new container prices have eased over 10 percent from their peak level to roughly $3,400 per 20 dry container. However, new container prices remain far above their historical range, and market leasing rates and used container sale prices also remain very high,” said Brian Sondey, Triton International CEO, following the release of the company’s full year results. He added that while the global economy remains subject to heightened uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company expects overall container demand to remain strong through the year. “Our customers are anticipating goods consumption and trade volumes will remain elevated, and they expect the operational challenges slowing container turn times will be difficult to resolve,” he said. Textainer CEO Olivier Ghesquiere observed that although lessors continue to see opportunities for growth at attractive yields this year, they are starting to see more normalized levels of container capital expenditure following a record year.
“As trade volume remains elevated, shipping lines have continued to grow their capacity while also positioning additional containers in locations with surplus demand,” Ghesquiere said. He added that the impact from COVID-19 also continues to affect the overall market, prolonging supply-chain disruption – and creating additional demand for containers. Triton and Textainer are the world’s largest lessors of intermodal freight containers, with a container fleet of 7.3 million TEUs and 4.3 million TEUs respectively. Both companies reported impressive full year earnings driven by an increase in lease prices due to the container shortage crisis. In 2021, container supply struggled to catch up to demand for most of the year, despite a significant increase in new container production. This led to record prices for new containers and very high market leasing rates. Data by global shipping consultancy Drewry shows that container lease rates have surged significantly in recent months, breaching the $6,500 threshold in the second quarter of 2021. This was the highest value since Drewry started monitoring container equipment prices back as far as 1998. In 2021, the consultancy projected full-year production of containers to reach 5.2 million TEUs, representing a 67 percent year-on-year increase. While the main buyers of the equipment have been lessors, accounting for 68 percent of purchases, carriers have also been investing more in their own container pools over the near term.
IAPH Environmental Ship Index to include New Module of Ships at Berth TOKYO: IAPH is pleased to announce that the process to build a new module for the IAPH Environmental Ship Index (ESI) has commenced. The new module will focus on the environmental performance of ships at berth for each port call. An online kick-off meeting by the project team was held yesterday, Monday 21 February. The module will initially focus on cruise shipping and will be funded by contributions from major cruise ports and IAPH. It will develop in two phases, starting with the reporting model, followed by the development of an at-berth
performance- and emissions indicator. A core working group of ports, representatives from the cruise industry and the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), and the website building company Nalta, has been established to accompany the development phases. The project is led by the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Amsterdam, being supported by IAPH and Green Award Foundation, which manages the ESI operation, and Starcrest. The aim is to have the at berth module in full operation by the beginning of 2023.

The Antwerp@C project takes a major next step towards halving CO2 footprint Engineering studies have started, final investment decision expected by the end of 2022 ANTWERP: Antwerp@C, an initiative of Air Liquide, BASF, Borealis, ExxonMobil, INEOS, TotalEnergies, Fluxys and the Port of Antwerp has the ambition to support industries’ efforts towards a 50% CO2 emissions’ reduction within the Port of Antwerp, Belgium, by 2030 through the creation of a common CO2 infrastructure. With the start of engineering studies, the project has now reached a new milestone to achieve more sustainable, lowercarbon operations around the Port of Antwerp. The seven leading chemical and energy companies aim to make a significant contribution towards the climate objectives of Belgium and the EU. The project aims to collect and export CO2 for sequestration in offshore capacities in the coming years and at reasonable costs or to make it available for potential future reuse. After completion of the engineering studies, a final investment decision for the first phase is anticipated in late 2022.
Start of Engineering studies (FEED phase) After carrying out a feasibility study in 2021, Antwerp@C has now taken the decision to move on to the next phase and start engineering studies. These will further investigate the construction of a central "backbone" throughout the port of Antwerp along the industrial zones on both the Right and Left banks of the river Scheldt. Also part of the engineering studies is a shared CO2 liquefaction unit with interim storage and marine loading facilities for cross-border shipping. These studies are partially funded by a Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant, which was awarded in October 2020, by subsidies from the Flemish government for the feasibility-phase and by contributions of all consortium participants. After the engineering studies have been finalized, a final investment decision for the first phase is anticipated in late 2022. In the meantime, Fluxys, Air Liquide and Pipelink (a subsidiary of Port of Antwerp) have organised an ‘Open Season’ in order to map the initial demand for the CO2 infrastructure which is proposed to be built. The Open Season was an invitation towards all companies in the wider port area of Antwerp to make their interest known for CO2 transmission and/or CO2 ter minalling infrastructure in Antwerp.The response gathered from the market will be considered in order to take a final investment decision.
The Port of Antwerp, a carbon capture pioneer Port of Antwerp is home to the largest integrated energy and chemicals cluster in Europe. This makes it the ideal location to set up new, cross-border collaboration projects for innovative CO2 reduction. To this end, Air Liquide, BASF, Borealis, ExxonMobil, INEOS, TotalEnergies, Fluxys and the Port of Antwerp joined forces at the end of 2019 under the name of Antwerp@C, to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of building a CO2 infrastructure to support future CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage) applications. Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and eventually also Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU) – i.e. reusing CO2 as a raw material for the chemical industry – are seen as important routes in the Port of Antwerp’s transition to a carbon-neutral port. This innovative crossborder CCUS project would be among the first and world’s largest multimodal open access CO2 export facilities.
