APM Terminals Pipavav receives the first train on Maersk service originating from the ceramics heartland of Morbi • The new rail service is a result of a close collabora on between APM Terminals Pipavav, Pipavav Rail Corpora on Limited (PRCL) and Maersk • Maersk will run the rail service connec ng the ceramics exporters in Morbi via Maliya to Port Pipavav every ten days and help the shippers connect to the Gulf, African and European markets Cont’d. from Pg. 4

The rail ser vice has resulted from the collaboration between the three crucial stakeholders: Maersk with its ocean and landside transportation expertise, APM Terminals Pipavav with its strategic location and as a preferred partner with superior connectivity and productivity and PRCL as an efficient rail partner. The export cargo is being moved on a rail service is helping decongest roads and improving the speed-tomarket by reducing the total transit time by 15%. Mr Jakob Friis Sørensen, Managing Director, APM Terminals Pipavav, said, “We are fully committed to supporting and strengthening the logistics and supply chains ecosystem with our strategic location that proves to be the ideal gateway connecting the hinterland to ocean transportation network. The rail service also improves schedule reliability compared to road transportation and helps the exporters connect to their preferred ocean service without delays. Over the last year, we have put together dedicated rail services for various industries and sectors from different belts across the country. DPA KANDLA, CISF UNIT DPA KANDLA & 6th BN NDRF conducts Mega Mock Drill GANDHIDHAM: CISF Unit DPA Kandla in association with DPA, Kandla, 6th BN NDRF, Vadodara and Local Police (Kandla Marine Police Station) conducted Mega Mock drill of different agencies on the “Cyclone” scenario on 20.06.2022. S h r i A b h i j e e t K u m a r, C o m m a n d a n t , C I S F U n i t D PA K a n d l a , Capt. Pradeep Mohanty, Deputy Conservator cum Port Facility Security Ofcer (PFSO), along with Sr. Officers of DPA Kandla, CISF Unit DPA Kandla, NDRF, representatives from IB, BSF, SIB & Port users also participated on this occasion to witness this. The aim of this exercise was coordination among stake holders, familiarization of Area of Responsibility and sense of confidence generation amongst all stake holders of Port. Capt. Pradeep Mohanty, PFSO cum Deputy Conservator praised the professionalism of specialised NDRF team and all concerned who have taken pain in making this event successful after involving themselves. Directorate General of Shipping & Indian Navy signs MoU for transition of Indian Navy Personnel to Merchant Navy To benefit personnel retiring Indian Navy and provide them opportunity to work on Merchant Ships NEW DELHI - The Directorate General of Shipping under Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways has issued DGS Order No 17 dated 20th June 2022 detailing 16 transition schemes for Indian Navy Personnel to Merchant Navy. These transition schemes have been drawn after a detailed discussion with Indian Navy. These Schemes enable smooth transition of the retiring Indian Navy Personnel into Merchant Navy by acquiring necessary certification to work on Merchant Ships in accordance with the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping Convention of International Maritime Organisation. To implement these schemes, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM, Chief of Personnel on behalf of Indian Navy and Shri Amitabh Kumar, Director General of Shipping, on behalf of Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways, Govt. of India. Some of the key highlights of the transition schemes are: • It caters for transition of personnel involved in Engine Room work on Naval Ships that is from rating to artificers to Engineers and also provides option for those working on electrical duties as well as mechanical engine duties. • It caters for equivalent transition with minimum bridge courses, sea-service & examination of those who during their tenure with Indian Navy have reached a certain position but were unable to gain step by step STCW Certification. • It further provides various options to Indian Navy Personnel from NCV Ship to Foreign Going Ships certification. • It also caters for step by step STCW Certification right from Officer in-charge of an engineering branch to second engineer to Chief Engineer of a merchant ship to be gained by an Indian Navy personnel as he progresses in his career in Indian Navy. This helps when a Naval engineering personnel leaves Indian Navy only after a few years of service, yet the necessary STCW Certification facilitates his smooth transition to merchant navy.

• It smoothens the process of Mechanical Artificers to become Chief Engineer of Merchant Ships operating in Near Coast Area and with propulsion power less than 3000 KW. • It allows for Electrical Engineers and Electrical Artificers to become Electro-technical officers of Merchant ships with respective bridging courses. • Specialist executive branch officers of the Indian navy to obtain Certificate of Competency as Officer in charge of navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more (i.e. 2nd Mate (FG/NCV)), Chief Mate and Master (Foreign going and Near coastal voyages) of a merchant navy vessels. • Indian navy executive branch officer to obtain Certificate of competency as “Officer in charge of navigational watch on ships of 500 gross • The radio officers of the Indian navy can obtain certificate of competency as General radio operators of Merchant navy vessels. The Indian navy deck sailors can transit to merchant navy deck ratings forming part of a navigational watch. Indian navy Chefs to Certified merchant navy cooks. The scheme envisages acceptance of training given by the Indian Navy to its officers and ratings and the sea service experience on Indian Naval or cargo ships on the basis of a certificate issued by the Indian Navy.

India to transform its export-focused SEZs into Comprehensive Economic Hubs NEW DELHI : India is proposing to transform its narrow export-focused special economic zones (SEZs) into comprehensive economic hubs through several concessions and the easing of restrictions to attract more investment in these areas. Industrial units located in these hubs, which will be called Development of Enterprise and Service Hubs (DESH), may be allowed to sell in the domestic market, and contract manufacture for those outside these zones as well, according to a draft circulated for consultation. Some fiscal incentives and measures to improve the ease of doing business are also likely to be part of the package to transform SEZs into comprehensive economic zones. These hubs may be established by the Centre or a state or jointly by them, or any person for the manufacture of goods or rendering services or for both. An ‘equalisation levy’ may be imposed on goods or services supplied to the domestic tariff area to bring taxes on them at par with those provided by units outside the zones. Currently, units in SEZs can only export goods or services and can’t sell in the domestic market. Forex Norm Relaxation:

Appropriate legislation is likely to be introduced in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament once the draft is finalised after stakeholder consultations, said people aware of the deliberations. Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman said in her February budget speech that the SEZ Act will be replaced with new legislation that would enable states to become partners in development. States looking to set up such zones will be able to set up boards that will be responsible for oversight. It is also proposed to relax the mandatory foreign exchange payment for domestic tariff area supplies and permit subcontracting both for goods and services for DTA units. “The plan is to make the new SEZ scheme compliant with the WTO rules and doing away with the Net Foreign Exchange clause is the first step in that direction,” said one official. Many proposals in the draft are from the 2019 report of an expert committee headed by Bharat Forge Chairman Baba Kalyani. The committee had suggested SEZs be converted into employment and economic enclaves (3Es) with the extension of tax sunset clauses, simplification of processes, tax benefits for the services sector, and extension of MSME schemes to these zones.

India may allow exports up to 500,000 mt wheat; fourth tranche since ban : S&P Global NEW YORK - India may allow exports of up to 500,000 mt wheat to Egypt and Jordan at a time when both the countries are finding it challenging to secure wheat supplies, officials with India’s food ministry told S&P Global Commodity Insights. Egypt is one of the key importers of wheat from Black Sea. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has reduced supplies from the region. Egypt is the world’s largest wheat importer. Jordan is also among major wheat importers in the region. India, the world’s second-largest producer, emerged as a major supplier of wheat in the aftermath of the invasion. However, it restricted wheat exports as severe heatwaves across north Indian states weighed on India’s wheat output, creating price panic in domestic markets. India’s wheat output estimate for marketing year 2021-22 (April-March) was reduced to 106.4 million mt in May, down 5% from initial estimates in February when export prospects were strong. India’s wheat output is now seen 3% lower on the year. However, Egypt and Jordan have requested India to allow shipments to ensure domestic food security. “We received a request from Egypt for wheat supplies. The commerce ministry will take a final call on the matter,” an official with the food ministry added. If India approves the shipments, this will be the fourth time that India has allowed

wheat exports since it imposed a ban on May 13. “Since the exports from Black Sea disappeared Egypt has been struggling with wheat supplies to make up for its domestic consumption,” a trader based in Cairo said. Egypt has been reeling under severe food inflation since the invasion began and global wheat prices shot up. Egypt’s food inflation was up 25% year on year in May, compared with 26% higher on the year in April, according to data released by Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. Egypt-India swap deal. To cope up with the depleting supply, Egypt is also in talks with India for a potential wheat-forfertilizer swap deal. “India and Egypt are in talks to chalk out a deal to exchange wheat for fertilizers and other goods,” an official with the India’s trade ministry said. Similar to the situation with Egypt, India has been facing shortages of fertilizers. India usually imports nitrogen-based fertilizers from the Black Sea region. However, the invasion led fertilizer prices to shoot up. Through the deal, India will be able to procure cheaper wheat while Egypt may source cheaper wheat. US becomes India's largest trade partner, is India-China trade decoupling? NEW DELHI - India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry latest data shows that the US has become India's largest trading partner, exceeding China with bilateral trade reaching USD 119.42 billion. From the breakdown data, India's trade exports to the US increased from about USD 51.62 billion in the previous fiscal year to USD 76.11 billion, while imports increased from about USD 29 billion to about USD 43.31 billion. India's major exports to the US include polished diamonds, pharmaceutical products, jewellery, light oil and petroleum, frozen shrimp, cosmetics and more. India's imports from the United States are mainly oil, liquefied natural gas, gold, coal, recycled products and scrap iron, large almonds, etc. The data also shows that the bilateral trade volume between India and China in the 2021-2022 fiscal year is about USD 115.42 billion, an increase of about 1/3 from the USD 86.4 billion in the previous fiscal year. Among them, India's exports to China are about USD 21.25 billion, and its imports to China are about USD 94.16 billion. It is reported that the trade volume of imported goods from China is increasing, and the top 100 imported items each have an import value of more than USD 100 million. Indian experts believe that India's dependence on China for imports of manufactured goods shows no sign of easing. The statistical data of China and India are different, which leads to differences in the trade volume figures announced by each of them. Chinese data shows that China is India's largest trading partner from 2013-2014 to 2017-2018 and 2020-2021. In addition to China, the US and the UAE were once India's largest trading partners. China has not always been India's largest trading partner, and this is not the first time that the US has become India's largest trading partner. For a long time, China and India have maintained a relatively large trade deficit, while India has maintained a trade surplus with the US. Therefore, India has always regarded the US as an

important export market. In the light of the above facts, it is pertinent to examine what really happened to the US-India trade? Will Chinese products decrease in India? Will China-India trade and economy weaken? India imports items ranging from small screws to large TVs, refrigerators and mobile phones are mostly Chinese products. These Chinese products are of high quality and low price and are almost unmatched by other countries. They are very popular among Indian consumers, and even the utensils for Indians to worship gods and various decorative flowers, bags, shoes and hats, etc. come from China. China is often used by the Indian media to illustrate the way Chinese goods "invade" India. In particular, mobile phones and consumer electronics are the most obvious because of their cost-effectiveness and affordability. Whereas, most of the US exports to India are energy products and agricultural products, China's exports to India are mostly manufacturing products, giving the impression that Chinese products are occupying the Indian market. But, in more invisible situations, such as in emerging information fields, the US dominates. Such as ecommerce Amazon, search engine Google, social media Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, etc. The continuous strengthening of US-India trade relations is due to both the epidemic and India's attempt to "decouple" from China. However, the security factor occupies a critical position, that is, with the help of the "China fear" mentality at home and abroad, India has accelerated the substitution of Chinese industries. India wants to leave China aside, attract capital from the US and other countries, undertake high-tech enterprises, and deeply participate in the global supply chain to promote the great development of India's domestic manufacturing industry. However, at present, the fundamentals of China-India economic and trade cooperation have not changed.

Indo-EU trade pact to help open doors for several domestic sectors: Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI - The proposed free trade agreement with the European Union, when implemented, will provide greater market access for several domestic sectors such as textiles, leather and sports goods in the EU market, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said recently. After a gap of over eight years, India and the EU on June 17 formally resumed negotiations for agreements on trade, investments and Geographical Indications (GI). The next round of negotiations will take place from June 27 till July 1 here. India had started negotiations for a trade pact, dubbed the Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), with the 27-country economic bloc in 2007, but the talks stalled in 2013 as both sides failed to reach an agreement on key issues, including customs duties on automobiles and spirits, and the movement of professionals. Goyal said that the EU is a large market with

27 countries which are prosperous. It is one of the largest trading blocs, having a big share of the world’s market. “It will open the doors, we believe, to our textiles, leather, pharma, sports goods, some agri products, handicrafts, handlooms. All this will get a bigger market. Our exports will increase,” he told reporters. EU, he said, has strength in modern technologies, high-end precision equipment and “we will get the benefit of their modern technologies”.In the services sector also, both sides would get an opportunity to support each other and expand trade.“We will get a larger flow of investments from Europe. It will be a win-win for both the countries,” he added. India’s merchandise exports to EU member countries stood at about USD 65 billion in 2021-22, while imports aggregated to USD 51.4 billion. A GI is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory.

Maersk's Container liftings surpass Cosco's in fourth quarter of 2021 : Alphaliner LONDON - Shipping giant Maersk has topped Cosco in container liftings in the final quarter of 2021 as volume return to pre-Covid levels, according to a recent Global Trade report. Cosco lost 13 per cent in container liftings year on year while Maersk moved ahead after posting a much more modest fall at four per cent, according to Paris-based container consultant Alphaliner. The difference, however, remains marginal with 60,000 TEU only separating the two companies in the final three months of 2021. Alphaliner has provided data for six other major carriers, which combined moved a total of 25.4 million TEU in loaded volumes during Q4 2021 - equivalent to an eight per cent decline year on year. As congestion issues continue to choke potential trade movements, published data show signs of a return to

pre-Covid levels. Total liftings for the eight carriers reached 103.6 million TEU in 2021, versus 100.8 million TEU in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic. No significant change in rankings has been reported for the other carriers alongside Maersk and Cosco. CMA CGM showed a year-on-year drop in liftings in Q4 but enjoyed a 2 per cent lift since pre-Covid levels. Hapag-Lloyd follows in fourth place, with liftings of 11.8 million TEU in 2021 - showing no oscillations from the same period the year prior, but a drop by 1 per cent compared to 2019. Among the smaller carriers, Zim and Wan Hai Lines showed the most growth. Wan Hai recorded loaded volumes of 4.9 million TEU in 2021, up more than 10 per cent compared to 2019. Zim posted 3.4 million TEU in liftings for 2021, a sharp jump on the 2.8 million TEU posted for both 2019 and 2020.

Multi-Modal Logistic Parks gets an incentive boost under Bharatmala : NHAI CEO NEW DELHI : The Centre has extended the concession period for its ambitious multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) scheme from 30 to 45 years, a top official at the agency implementing the project said, a tweak that could attract more long-term investors seeking a share of India’s infrastructure story. The government has planned to build 35 such mega freight-and-transport hubs under its flagship Bharatmala scheme, aiming to smoothen freight mobility, improve efficiency and reduce logistics costs. The extended concession period, among the longest in the infrastructure sector, will help investors recoup their investment and generate surplus, said Prakash Gaur, CEO of National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), a special purpose vehicle set up by the National Highways Authority of India. The Union Road Ministry has mandated NHLML to execute MMLPs and implement connectivity, including links to ports. “The MMLPs are set to be developed in phases with each phase (about three) of a five-year period. This would have given investors only around 15 years to recover their investment and generate a surplus. With each MMLP expected to require over ?1,000 crore of investment, a longer 45-year concession period would give the necessary fillip to the scheme," Gaur said in an interview. Sprawled

across at least 100 acres, MMLPs will be set up as public-private partnerships, entailing a total capital investment of ?50,000 crore. These parks are aimed to transform the existing point-to-point logistics model to a hub-and-spoke model. Here, freight from various places will arrive at a hub, where it will be warehoused before being despatched to another hub, after which it will proceed to other smaller locations. Multi-modal logistics parks will allow seamless freight aggregation, warehousing and distribution, and will provide value-added services such as customs clearances and IT services. This is expected to reduce India’s high logistics cost of around 13-14% of GDP to single-digit levels as in most advanced economies. The government may conclude bidding for at least four multi-modal logistics parks under the new concession period this year, Gaur said. This includes the Chennai MMLP, which is likely to bid out in July, and the ones at Nagpur, Bengaluru and Indore in August. Detailed project reports for a dozen other multi-modal logistics parks are in different stages of finalization, and once they are available, more bids could be invited this year or early next year, Gaur said. However, at the end of 45 years, the facility will return to the government. Under the earlier 30-year plan, the operator had the right of first refusal for an extension of 30 years. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of India’s first MMLP at Jogighopa in Assam in October last year.

India-UAE pact to help widen Kerala’s export opportunities KOCHI - It was in May 2022 that India and UAE entered to Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Within weeks it has brought a favourable atmosphere for various business sectors in Kerala. The positive impacts have already started to reflect in the exports. It is expected that within six months there will be phenomenal growth in exports. On the back of free-market terms, the tax on 80 per cent of export products will be reduced to 0 per cent from 5 per cent. Hence the exports from each sector are likely to witness 10 per cent to 30 per cent growth.

According to Joint Director of Foreign Trade (Kochi), KM Harilal, the body is planning to organize outreach programs with the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce across the state to sensitise traders about the positive impacts of the free market and how to make it an opportunity for improving the business. Interestingly, data for the financial year 2021-22 shows that 7 per cent of India’s total foreign exports go to UAE. The export to UAE is worth $2,804.5 crore, while the state’s share is $53.4 crore. Kerala’s export revenue is expected to grow further due to the new pact.

NVOCCs insists on obtaining direct billing from Colombo Port COLOMBO - International Feeder Shipping Line Operators are imposing new conditions for carrying of NVOCC Line containers to and from the Port of Colombo. The new conditions include NVOCC Lines/Agents required to obtain direct billing facilities with the three terminals of the Port of Colombo. The deadline for NVOCCs is August 2022. The Ministry of Ports and Shipping and SLPA Chairman have formed a Joint Committee, comprising of all stakeholders to find a workable solution to offer NVOCC Lines/Agents the required Direct Billing Facilities at the Colombo Port Terminals. It has been pointed out by NVOCC Principals that their fleets of containers are adequately insured to cover cargo, equipment and third party liabilities. Also, NVOCC principals state that their business model has been legally recognised and accepted by licensing authorities and service providers in all countries they operate and due to this recognition, their agents in regional ports such as India, Pakistan, Dubai-UAE have been given Direct Billing Facilities by the respective Port Terminal Operators. However, we understand that the proposal submitted jointly by the three Colombo Port Terminals after almost three months of deliberation, is not conducive for the NVOCC Line principals and their Colombo agents. This situation finds NVOCC Lines and their Agents

sandwiched between the Feeder Operators and Colombo Port Terminals, and places many of the NVOCC Lines actively participating in the ocean shipping operations at the Port of Colombo in a vulnerable position. If the Shipping Authorities and Port Terminals do not treat this as a high priority matter and arrive at a viable solution prior to the deadline given by the Feeder Operators, there will be a considerable shortage of NVOCC Line Containers coming into Sri Lanka, which will adversely affect the import and export trade. As per 2021 statistics, approximately 23% of Sri Lanka’s containerised import and export cargo volumes are handled through NVOCC container Lines. It is estimated that over 50% of import cargo from Indian Ports to Colombo are carried on NVOCC containers. A majority of Sri Lanka’s tea exports to the Middle East countries move in NVOCC Lines. Specialised NVOCC Operators known as ISO Tank Operators, bring in liquid chemicals into Colombo in ultrasafe and purpose-built ISO Tank Containers. NVOCC Lines and their agents bring in a sizable amount of dollar revenue to the Port of Colombo, which includes local and transhipment container handling. NVOCCs also offer local importers and exporters competitive freight rates to the regional destinations served by them, giving them an alternative to the main shipping lines.

International Chamber of Shipping marked Centenary ahead of Major Climate Summit in London LONDON. The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), representing 80% of the world’s merchant fleet, will celebrate its centenary next week as the body reflects on 100 years of industry representation. A special centenary dinner, featuring 500 international attendees, took place on Monday 20th June at the UK’s National Maritime Museum. ICS was formed at a meeting in Hotel Victoria 100 years ago in London. ICS remarked that this occasion offered a chance for the body to ‘reflect on this constantly changing industry and to look to the future’ in supporting shipowners, especially around the challenges of navigating a green transition. The following day, on 21 June, ICS staged its ‘Shaping the Future of Shipping’ summit as a chance for “tangible action” on decarbonisation, after limited progress at a recent IMO climate committee. The executive and ministerial level summit will bring together more than 100 leading CEOs with political decision-makers from around the world. ICS has expressed hope that the private sector can progress action in addition to its global regulator and put into motion actions which will enable shipping and associated industries to catalyse their green transition. The summit follows last week’s MEPC78, the IMO’s environmental working group, where the session failed to approve an industry-funded $5bn R&D initiative for green fuels.

Shipping has proposed an industry-driven 2050 net-zero carbon target which is yet to be codified by governments at a regulatory level. Esben Poulsson, ICS chairman, commented : “ICS has represented the industry for more than 100 years, but we must always be forward-looking in how we can support our members. At this landmark moment, lessons learned from the past century will help equip us for the next, and nowhere will this be more pertinent than in how the global fleet deals with the challenges of decarbonisation. “We are currently at a crossroad, and it is summits such as these which can play a crucial part in determining the industry’s direction of travel for the next century. Decarbonisation strategies come with high risks, which is why it is important to have critical discussions to determine the framework for the future and to deliver concrete solutions. Shipping urgently needs zero-carbon fuels to be available on a commercial scale, and the only way to do this is to accelerate their production. “Shipping cannot decarbonise without governments; however, we cannot continue to put ourselves at the mercy of bureaucracy. As we celebrate 100 years representing the interests of a globally crucial industry, we intend for this summit to create tangible actions to guide us through one of our greatest challenges.”

Piyush Goyal meets Bangladeshi FM, discusses ways to boost trade, investment ties

NEW DELHI : On the sidelines of the 7th Round of India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Commission, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal discussed ways to boost trade and investment ties with the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday, 19th June 2022. Talking to Twitter, Goyal wrote, “Discussions focussed on exploring ways to enhance bilateral trade & investment giving a further boost to economic ties between the two countries.” External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar also expressed confidence in India-Bangladesh ties and said that the countries look forward to cooperating in new domains including cyber security and the upgradation of the railway system. Jaishankar also spoke at length on the landmark achievements in the partnership between both nations. Speaking on the trade connection between both the nations, Jaishankar noted, “Today Bangladesh is our largest development partner, it is our largest trade partner in the region; it is our largest visa operation overseas. And that

really underlines every aspect of our cooperation. And we, in turn, are your largest export destination in Asia. I am glad to see that your exports have doubled to USD 2 billion this year.” The EAM also said that India looks forward in boosting bilateral cooperation in new domains. “So, we now look forward to working with you to take our ties to new domainsArtificial Intelligence, cyber security, startups, Fintech. We were pleased to receive your ICT Minister. We had a very good visit by your Railway Minister recently and I am glad to expand our cooperation on upgradation of our railway system,” Jaishankar noted. Meanwhile, at the India-Bangladesh JCC meeting, AK Abdul Momen, Fo r e i g n A f f a i r s M i n i s t e r o f Bangladesh, said that the relationship between both countries is based on mutual trust. FM Momen called India the “most important neighbour”. “India is the most important neighbor of Bangladesh. Initiatives taken by both nations have helped us achieve stability & development across the region. BangladeshIndia relations are based on mutual trust & respect,” the Bangladeshi FM said. The JCC was held to review the bilateral ties including cooperation in the wake of COVID-19, border management and security, trade and investment, connectivity, energy, water resources, development partnership, and regional and multilateral issues, the MEA said earlier in a statement. This is the first physical meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. The previous meeting was held in 2020 virtually.

Petersburg to India on June 17. A total of 1094 TEUs of Russian export goods were shipped, such as products of pulp-and-paper industry, chemicals, fertilizers, constr uction materials, spare parts. The return voyage of the vessel from Nhava Sheva (Terminal BMCT) is planned for middle July, with estimated arrival at St. Petersburg in 25 days. In the opposite direction the vessel will carry Indian goods (textiles, rice, chemicals, medicines, equipment). We are pleased to start a new chapter in the history of our company, by launching a pilot project of direct container service between Russia and India, - said Alexander Altshuller, General Director of MODUL Co. Ltd. – We are in the process of significantly expanding the fleet of our own containers with a view to using this equipment on the announced route as well as on other routes planned to be launched later. Global Trade is not going into reverse : Maersk CEO COPENHAGEN : AP Møller-Maersk CEO Søren Skou said that he saw little evidence of US or European manufacturers bringing production back home. Instead, they were looking for additional suppliers around Asia. Globalisation is not unravelling but the era of ever greater reductions in barriers to trade is at an end, according to a Financial Times report. “Global trade is where it is. It’s going to grow more or less with GDP,” he said. “It’s not liberalising more, so we’re not going to see [even] more growth. It’s also not going sharply in reverse.” The comments from the Maersk boss, whose company is a bellwether for global trade as it transports more than one in six containers across the oceans, contrast sharply with the gloom of many business executives who believe globalisation is under attack, particularly from populist politicians. Last month data provider Sentieo found that mentions of nearshoring, onshoring and reshoring in company results meetings and investor briefings were at their highest level since at least 2005. Skou acknowledged the impact of populist political movements and the lack of new trade deals in the US but underscored that he saw no dramatic shift in supply chains. “We don’t see our customers moving production back to Europe. They’re spreading it around in Asia,” Skou said. “It’s very difficult to see in the short term or maybe even the mid term that you will see a dramatic change in the way the world produces consumer goods.” Maersk is expecting container shipping volumes to be lower in the first half of this year as world economic growth stalls. But thanks to record freight rates, congestion in ports and supply chain woes, the Danish group is forecasting record

earnings in 2022. Skou said that container shipping could soon be hit by a sharp reversal of the factors that have led to it booming since the end of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. He added that there could be a “bullwhip effect” where demand contracts and supply increases, after almost two years of the opposite phenomenon during which shipping groups were unable to respond to a surge in consumer spending. “When it happens, it could go quite quickly,” he added. He said it was unlikely to happen at the beginning of the second half of the year — as Maersk had previously assumed — but could happen in August or later in the year. “I don’t want to say I’m afraid of it,” he said, pointing to an increase in longterm contracts in container shipping and a rapidly growing logistics business on land. Skou also made his first public comments on a MeToo scandal that has roiled Maersk and lifted the curtain on abuses of female seafarers in a male-dominated sector after a former cadet claimed she was raped on one of the company’s vessels. Maersk’s chief executive said that “imagining that can happen on one of our ships is absolutely horrible”. He said the company had known about the alleged rape for almost a year, and had since introduced new policies to ensure that there was always more than one woman per vessel and that the boat’s captain and chief engineer received suitable training. Maersk employs 350 female seafarers out of a total of 12,000 on its vessels. The International Maritime Organization estimates that women make up just 1.28 per cent of the global seafaring workforce — or roughly 24,000 seafarers. These crew remain on board for two months or more, and during the pandemic many were at sea well beyond the end of their contracts as ports refused permission to disembark.
