Process of Registering Ship will now be competed in 7 days : D G Shipping MUMBAI: The process of registering a ship will now be competed in seven days if all documents are in order, says D-G Shipping. In a digitalisation drive, the Government has made ship registrations online, pledging to complete the entire process within seven days. Earlier this exercise used to take up to one year. “Everything is online now. Within seven days, if all the
documents are in order, the ship will be registered,” said an official in the Directorate-General of Shipping, the Country’s maritime administration. Ease Of Doing Business It will help promote ease of doing business because ship owners were finding it difficult to get their ships registered. Container cargo handling at Major Ports drops over 30% in April-June: IPA NEW DELHI: Container cargo handling at India’s major ports tumbled over 30 percent during the April-June quarter of the current fiscal amid the coronavirus pandemic, as per data by ports body IPA. Container cargo in terms of TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit) at India’s 12 Major Ports dropped 32.28 percent to 1.74 million in the the first quarter of the current fiscal, according to the latest data from the Indian Ports’ Association (IPA). In terms of tonnage, the container cargo declined 30.11 percent to 26.34 million tonnes (MT) in the quarter. Cont’d. Pg. 19

India’s First Port Based SEZ - JNPT SEZ - is Now Operational 5 units have started their construction activities and amongst them 2 units have recently started their operations in SEZ successfully. All three units are granted operational status by Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, SEZ NAVI MUMBAI: JNPT, the premier container port in the country is developing a multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in its owned free hold land of 277 hectares at Navi Mumbai. The multi-product port based SEZ aims to boost exports by enabling port-led industrialization under Sagarmala initiative of M i n i s t r y o f S h i p p i n g . The foundation stone of the project w a s l a i d b y the Honorable P r i m e M i n i s t e r, Shri Narendra Modi in August 2014.
JNPT reached yet another mile stone in development of SEZ by becoming the first of its kind operational Port based multi-product SEZ. Two units in JNPT SEZ namely, OWS LLP and Krish Food Industry (India) have completed their first phase of operational activity and are declared operational units by Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, SEZ. The efforts rendered by these units during the challenging times of Covid-19 are commendable. Apart from the first 2 companies, 3 more companies are likely to commence their construction activities soon.

Commenting on the progress of SEZ, Mr. Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT said, “For JNPT, this is truly a great occasion as JNPT becomes the first port where Port-led economic development is evolving successfully. JNPT is confident of attracting leading global companies for making India a manufacturing hub as the infrastructure development underway in JNPT SEZ is as per the international benchmark. The potential units investment and the employment generation will give a boost to the entire entire eco-system around JNPT region. I thank Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, Ministry of Commerce, GoI for their timely support and guidance in developing and operationalizing the first Port based multiproduct SEZ and I thank all the stakeholders too for the timely support in making this possible.” All together there are 19 MSME and 1 Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) co-developer who have been allotted the plots in JNPT SEZ till date. It is expected that all the remaining units will follow the suit and become operational in the near future. Over the last months, JNPT has been continuously working towards successful operationalization of the SEZ. The SEZ once fully occupied is expected to generate Rs 4,000 Crores of investments and create 57,000 jobs in the SEZ. JNPT is leaving no stone unturned to ensure world class infrastructure and facilities to units in the SEZ. JNPT enjoys the Special Planning Authority (SPA) status for the SEZ project. Also, the Electricity distribution license from MERC, GoM is provided to JNPT SEZ. All the clearances for setting up of SEZ are in place. This will further help in reducing setup time and cost for the units being setup in JNPT SEZ and will further enhance the “Ease of Doing Business”.

Total revenue for the January-June period rose to SAR 5.61 billion, marking a 78% jump from SAR 3.15 billion reported for the same period a year earlier. Bahri’s net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2020, surged 1,569% to reach SAR 760.61 million, compared to SAR 45.57 million reported in the same period in 2019. Total revenue came in at SAR 3.53 billion, up 145% from SAR 1.44 billion recorded in the corresponding period a year ago. Accordingly, Q2 2020 results are the ever highest in the history of Bahri. Commenting on the remarkable figures, Mr. Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO of Bahri, said: “The outstanding financial results we delivered in the second quarter of 2020 reflect the significant improvement in our operational profitability.
We have started the year on solid footing, and this momentum has been supported by our strong business retention and expansion program. The increase in net profit during the reporting period was largely attributable to the higher sales growth achieved across our various business units, demonstrating a high, sustained demand for our services and solutions.” Aldubaikhi added: “As we enter the second half of our fiscal year, we are poised to grow our revenues exponentially and expect to continue generating positive earnings, with our financial position remaining robust into the rest of 2020 and beyond. COSCO Shipping Lines & Tianjin Port signs strategic co-operation agreement BEIJING: The northeastern Chinese port of Tianjin is set to boost its volumes following an agreement with COSCO to create a regional port hub. Under the terms of the agreement, COSCO Shipping Lines will help to boost Tianjin’s container volumes by developing new routes, in order to realise Tianjin’s goal of being the hub port of Northeast Asia. Both sides pledged to deepen their cooperation in green and smart port construction, governance, overseas project investments and international talent development to enable Tianjin to fulfil its role in the Belt and Road initiative. COSCO will also help to fulfil the role that the government has envisioned for Tianjin in the Beijing-TianjinHebei Integration Plan, which will see northern Chinese cities and provinces using their comparative advantages and synergies to achieve regional growth. One concern is that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, also known as the Three North Areas, is inadequately
cosmopolitan and therefore not fully integrated into global supply chains. Physical infrastructure will be key in integrating the cluster, including for integrating supply chains and the labour market. Tianjin, which was the ninth busiest port in 2019, with throughput of 17.3 million TEU, will be COSCO’s strategic hub port in Northeast Asia. Relying on the advantages of COSCO’s global transportation and sales network and Tianjin Port’s geographical location, the two parties will collaborate in logistics projects such as transhipments around the Bohai Sea, developing the port hinterland, and transportation along the Eurasian Land Bridge. The idea is to ensure sufficient logistical coverage of Three North’s hinterland, through improving sea-rail intermodal transportation. COSCO and Tianjin Port said, “We will give full play to their advantages and jointly expand their overseas operations, particularly along the Belt and Road.”

As the effects of climate change become apparent, carbon recycling, a method used to capture and reuse emitted carbon dioxide (Co2), is attracting attention as one of the paths to a decarbonized society. Formed within the CCR Study Group in August 2019, the WG aims to explore the feasibility of the concept of utilizing methanation technology for zero-emission ship fuels. Through its activities, the WG aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero in sea transportation, which accounts for 99.6% of Japanese imports and exports, and thereby contribute to the formation of a sustainable society. Specifically, the nine companies listed above plan to assume carbon recycling supply chain of methanation fuel that involves the supply of feedstock CO2, transportation of the feedstock, methanation, and conversion into marine fuel. They will calculate the estimated amount of CO2 emissions in the supply chain, and based on these results, identify technical challenges and develop a roadmap for its realization.
The first stage of activities involves: (1) Separation, capture and liquefaction of CO2 emitted from steelworks (2) Transportation of liquefied CO2 by ship to a hydrogen supply site (3) Generation of synthetic methane from CO2 and hydrogen by methanation reaction, and (4) Liquefaction of the synthetic methane and using it as marine fuel. In addition to obtaining an approximate value of CO2 emissions in this assumed supply chain, the group will also identify challenges and decide whether to proceed with subsequent next-stage activities along with the content of those activities. The acquired knowledge will also be widely disclosed in and out of the industry.

Indian MSMEs on Amazon global selling programme cross $2 billion in exports NEW DELHI: E-commerce giant Amazon recently said Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and brands that are part of its Global Selling Programme (GSP) have crossed $2 billion in cumulative exports. The company, which had started GSP in 2015, allows Indian companies to export to other countries through 15 Amazon websites globally. The programme had started with a few hundred sellers and now has over 60,000 exporters. In January this year, Amazon had pledged to enable $10 billion in cumulative exports by 2025. Amit Agar wal, Senior VP and Country Head Amazon India, said micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of the Indian economy and by digitising them, the company is contributing towards boosting exports and job creation that will empower inclusive economic growth of the Country. “The GSP helps take homegrown businesses global and provides an avenue for MSMEs to build global brands. The programme is witnessing momentous growth. It took three years for the programme to hit exports of
$1 billion and now it has grown 100 per cent to hit the next $1 billion in less than 18 months," he added. Indian SMEs and brands using Amazon global selling export worldwide has now crossed $2 billion in cumulative exports, he noted. Agarwal said the programme has helped MSMEs sustain their exports business and in turn, supported hundreds of families amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has led to lockdowns and disruptions in supply chains globally. "Exports will continue to play a critical role in this revival. GSP is helping local go global. This is more important than ever for our small businesses, and for the nation, as it recovers from unprecedented time. We will continue to empower Indian MSMEs to realise their potential and make exports easy," he said. Agarwal added that Amazon remains committed to its pledge to digitise 10 million MSMEs, enable one million incremental jobs and drive $10 billion in ecommerce exports by 2020. Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and MSME Minister, said the MSME sector contributes about 30 per cent of the growth of the Country and about 48 per cent of India's exports.
Stating that exports is a key priority for the government, he said the focus is on supporting Indian MSMEs to be more successful in the international markets and increasing their share of exports to 60 per cent. He suggested that products exported through GSP can be classified as micro, small and medium and making separate categories for handloom, handicrafts and agro-MSMEs. "The product quality (of MSMEs) is very good but they need packaging, good designing," he said adding that this will help in further enhancing popularity of Indian products in international markets. The Minister said products like honey, mushroom and furniture have huge potential. He added that Amazon - with its global expertise - can help Indian MSMEs with insights on product designing and marketing, making it a win-win for both the e-commerce giant and Indian companies. Amazon also released its 'Exports Digest 2020' on Monday. It said the number of exporters on Amazon has grown to over 60,000 with sellers joining from metros as well as tier II and III cities.
India’s food exports up 27% since March NEW DELHI: The country recorded $0.79 billion trade surplus in June against $15.28 billion deficit during the same period of 2019. Despite economic turbulence due to Covid-19, India’s overall food exports since March have increased 27 per cent. According to the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), the average growth of 27 per cent during the lockdown and the unlock period came on the back of high demand for food-based items. “The food sector has shown 27 per cent growth. The major markets that have responded well are the US and Canada,” TPCI Chairman Mohit Singla said at the Indo-Canadian virtual “buyer-seller meet (BSM) on food & beverages.” He said exports in June against yearago month had declined by only 4 per cent. “We exported almost Rs 166,000 crore merchandise. It shows the Indian market
has bounced back and the international market is responding well to Indian exports,” he said. Recently, official data showed India emerged as a net exporter in June. On the Indo-Canadian food trade, Singla said, “Canada can be an important market for the Indian F&B industry as it has a large population (approx 2.4 million) of Indian diaspora. It’s a positive sign that we are looking beyond the pandemic to go into a recovery phase for business.” The demand for India’s ethnic and organic products was rising, he added. “Canada is projecting the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression of about 6.8 per cent in 2020 instead of 8 per cent or so projected by the IMF for Canada,” he said and hoped, all economies, including India and Canada, would have a ‘V’ shaped rather than ‘W’ or ‘U’ shaped recovery.” He said the strategic India-Canada economic partnership was moving to the next level in business and political terms and often the business led the political side. “The merchandise trade has risen 24 per cent during the pandemic. The investment from Canada to India has grown from $5 billion to $60 billion in the last 5-6 years,” he said.
Indian spices exports increases by 34% in June NEW DELHI: Increase in spices exports during June is in contrast to a decline of 12.41 per cent in the country’s overall merchandise export basket during this period, said an ASSOCHAM study. According to data from Spices Board of India, India had exported 857,400 tonnes of spices in April-December 2019, as compared to 825,340 tonnes during the corresponding period in 2018, a growth of just 4 per cent. In value terms, India exported spices worth Rs 15,882.20 crore in the same period, a growth of 8 per cent from Rs 14,665.77 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. During 2018-19, a total of 1,100,250 tonnes of spices and spice products worth Rs 19,505.81 crore ($2,805.50 million) were exported from India, as against 1,028,060 tonnes valued at Rs 17,980.16 crore ($2,789.35 million) in
2017-18, registering an increase of 7 per cent in volume, 8 per cent in rupee terms, and 6 per cent in dollar terms. Traditionally, pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, celery, fennel, fenugreek, nutmeg, spice oils and oleoresins, and mint products are the major spices shipped abroad. Biggest buyers of Indian spices in 2018-19 were Vietnam (123,673 tonnes), China (93,649 tonnes) and the US (82,204 tonnes). Other major destinations were Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, the UK and Iran. The US was the largest importer of pepper at around 5,465.19 tonnes in 2018-19, followed by the UK with 1,375.34 tonnes.

Two more ships are in the process of being registered digitally. The Process Registering a ship in India typically goes through 7-8 processes, with each taking as much as 30 days. There was
no timeline for any of the processes. Now, each of these processes will be completed within a timeline of 24 hours. A ship will be allotted a call sign name and call sign number which are to be carved on the ship within a day. Then, the ship owner can call for survey and within 24 hours, the survey will be completed and a certificate will be issued online. Once that is done, the ship owner can go for tonnage certificate. This can also be
applied online and it will be issued within 24 hours. After the tonnage certificate is issued, the certificate of inspection has to be obtained for the vessel. “Like this, step-bystep, everything will be done within seven days,” official stated. Ship owners are not required to visit the ship registrar’s office in the mercantile marine department attached to the DG Shipping for registering their ships.
Container cargo handling at Major Ports drops over 30% in April-June: IPA Cont’d. from Pg. 1 These ports had handled containers to the tune of 2.57 million TEUs and 37.69MT in terms of tonnage in the April-June period of the previous financial year. The IPA, which maintains cargo data handled by these ports, in its latest report said “percentage variation from the previous year” in container handling in terms of TEUs and tonnage was 32.28 percent and 30.11 percent, respectively. India has 12 Major Ports — Deendayal, M u m b a i , J N P T, M o r m u g a o , N e w Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar ( E n n o r e ) , V O C h i d a m b a r a n a r, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) — that handle about
61 percent of the country’s total cargo traffic. Ratings agency Icra had earlier said that while all cargo segments are vulnerable, container segment is expected to be more adversely impacted. While general cargo throughput may witness 5-8 percent contraction for the full year 2020-21, the container segment may drop 12-15 percent, it had said. These 12 ports had handled 705MT of cargo in the last financial year. Total cargo traffic includes container cargo, coal, fertilisers, petroleum products and other segments. Cargo handled by the Country’s Major Ports declined by 19.68 percent to
141.92MT in the first quarter of this fiscal. These 12 ports had together handled 176.69MT of cargo during AprilJune period of 2018-19. Ports like Chennai and Kamrajar saw their cargo volumes nosedive about 40 percent d u r i n g A p r i l - J u n e , w h i l e Ko l k a t a suffered a drop of over 30 percent. While Chennai port saw 39.91 percent decline in cargo handling to 7.28MT, Kamarajar (Ennore) port suffered a drop of 39.41 percent to 5.16MT in April-June, as per IPA data. Cargo handling at Cochin port slipped 33.78 percent to 5.63MT, while the same at JNPT declined 31.38 percent to 12.09MT. Kolkata port logged a fall of 27.26 percent to 11.72MT.
Asia-North Europe market share set to ebb and flow between the Alliances : SeaIntelligence LONDON: More evidence has emerged on how differently the three main container shipping alliances on the AsiaNorth Europe trade are to manage capacity for the remainder of the year. According to new data from SeaIntelligence, the 2M and Ocean alliances had been quick off the mark early in the year to make drastic capacity cuts in weeks five and six. The 2M partners reduced capacity by over 50%, compared with that week in 2019, while the Ocean Alliance reduced capacity by around 45%, year on year. THE Alliance reduced capacity by 29% in week five and by 38% in week six, but has since maintained a relatively stable capacity offering. However, over the next two months, while the 2M partners will see year-on year-capacity reduced by 24% and THE Alliance’s offering will be cut back by 24%27%, the Ocean Alliance will reduce capacity by a far modest 14%-18%.
“The Ocean Alliance’s cumulative capacity reductions by week 40 are the lowest of the three alliances, and by quite some margin,” SeaIntelligence CEO Alan Murphy said. “This is a trend we also see on the Asia-North America east coast and Asia-Mediterranean trades. “A s w e h a v e n o t e d o n s e v e r a l occasions, there is no logical basis to suggest that the Ocean Alliance would be impacted differently. Which makes these developments a bit curious, especially since this is not a trend that we saw in 2019 either.” According to eeSea data, this will also result in a change in market share on the trade: currently 2M deploys 41% of headhaul capacity, with the Ocean Alliance providing 38% and THE Alliance the remaining 21%. Next month that will change, with 2M maintaining a 41% market share, with Ocean Alliance moving to 40% and THE Alliance reduced to 19%.
In September, the Ocean Alliance is set – according to current schedules – to operate 39% of capacity, with 2M reduced to a 36% market share and THE Alliance on 25%. However, assuming that the 2M partners reinstate the AE2/Swan in October, as originally planned, the 2M partners will once more be the leading vessel-sharing agreement, with 44% of operated capacity. Meanwhile, last week, just two further Asia-North Europe blank sailings were announced by carriers, SeaIntelligence noted. Mr Murphy said: “The fewer new blank sailings does not mean demand has come back to normal, as it dropped by 15.9% year on year in April and 11.4% in May, but rather that the carriers seem to believe their current blank sailings programme is adequate – aggressive even, considering that a host of blank sailings have been reinstated in recent weeks.”
India turned net exporter of chemicals after 10 years in FY 20 NEW DELHI: India turned a net exporter of chemicals and related products for the first time in at least a decade in FY20, according to the latest commerce ministry data. While these are still early days to forecast a trend, the data come as a relief at a time when the country is battling the Covid-19 pandemic and the government is seeking self-sufficiency in this critical segment, especially in pharmaceuticals. While exports of such products — including drug formulations, bulk drugs
and drug intermediates, organic chemicals, agro chemicals and fertilisers — rose 3% year-on-year to $45 billion in FY20, imports stood at $44.3 billion, down 7.3%. In contrast, India’s overall goods exports contracted by 5.1% in FY20, while its imports shrank by 7.8%. The chemical and related products are clubbed together in 15 broad categories. The data lend some credence to the claim that with right policy interventions, India’s chemicals sector can be a sustained driver of its merchandise exports.
Importantly, over the past decade through FY20, exports of the chemicals and related products more than doubled from $20.8 billion in FY11 to $45 billion last fiscal, outperforming the overall goods exports that rose from $250 billion to just $313 billion during this period. Consequently, the share of the chemicals segment in the country’s merchandise exports, too, jumped from 8.3% in FY11 to 14.4% in FY20, having emerged as a key driver of export growth. Such imports rose up from $29.5 billion to $44.3 billion in the past decade.

Bahri Logistics delivers Largest cargo for Saudi Electricity Company Seven mobile stations shipped in two batches from France to Saudi Arabia RIYADH: Bahri Logistics, one of the six Bahri business units, has reached a new milestone with the completion of the shipment of mobile stations with a voltage o f 1 3 2 a n d 1 1 0 k V a n d a c a p a c i t y o f 6 7 M VA f o r Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). Marking the largest cargo that the company secured after it signed a contract with SEC in May 2016, the shipment consisted of seven sets of transformers manufactured by Siemens France. Divided into 21 trailers, the mobile stations were transported from the Port of Fos-sur-Mer in France to their final destinations in Saudi Arabia in two batches during the third and
fourth quarters of 2019. Two transformer sets were shipped in the first batch and the remaining five sets in the second batch. Both shipments were cleared and delivered without any port demurrage. Ahmed Al-Ghaith, President of Bahri Logistics, said: “The shipment of the largest cargo for SEC is yet another major accomplishment for Bahri Logistics and reinforces the company’s standing as a leading total logistics provider.
