SCI to launch India - Maldives Shipping Service from next month MUMBAI: During the visit of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Maldives in June 2019, the Honorable Prime Minister and the Honorable President of Maldives dwelt on the need to improve the connectivity between India and Maldives through the establishment of enabling infrastructure which shall also give impetus to bilateral trade between the two countries. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was thus signed on 08.06.2019 to establish a direct passenger-cumcargo ferry service between India and Maldives with a view to providing an alternate, direct and less expensive means
for transport for passengers and goods and to advance economic, social and cultural ties between the two countries. To take things forward and to reaffirm our commitment towards the vision of our Honorable Prime Minister, various steps have been undertaken to take the aspirations forward and towards this end, we announce the commencement of a Direct Shipping Service between the two countries which would flag off from India in the third week of September, 2020. Shifting fortunes in India’s Container Ports as Cochin, Deendayal buck downward trend : S&P Global MUMBAI: Even as the coronavirus pandemic continued to slacken container traffic across all major ports in India during July, Cochin and Deendayal ports were seen bucking the downward trend in the month, with container volumes surpassing the year-ago figure by 6% and 10% respectively. Market sources attribute this rise in volumes at these ports to displaced demand for container space due to a spike in air freight, shifting of traffic between ports due to evacuation and logistic challenges, delayed shipments and higher demand from the Middle East during the month. India has 12 major ports and over 200 minor and private ports. Major ports cumulatively handle 55% of the country’s
Yang Ming announces Half Year Financial Results of 2020, Improves its Container Transport business TAIWAN: Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) held its 348th Board Meeting on August 13th, 2020 to approve its half year financial report for 2020. Benefiting from strong freight rates and relatively low fuel costs, Yang Ming reported an improving quarterly result in its container transport business, generating positive operating profit of USD 18.64 million in the second quarter despite the business volumes was down 15% due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In spite of the significant progress in container transport sector, the spread of the pandemic had negatively impacted the dry bulk market, resulting in quarterly losses of USD 20.94 million for Yang Ming’s dry bulk business (primarily attributable to the recognition of impairment loss on dry bulk chartered-in vessels under IFRS). As a result, Yang Ming reported narrowed losses of USD 2.25 million for the second quarter of 2020. For the first half of the year, the company’s consolidated revenues was down by 12.03% compared with the same period in the previous year to USD 2.2 billion, an reduction in business volume of 9.86% to 2.38 million TEUs. Learning and relearning post Covid : 4 basic ways to improve your Logistics Management VADODARA: Manufacturing leaders must always strive to be something better for their customers. They understand that behaving purposefully allows their entire business to compete productively and efciently — and the way they do that is through logistics management. The Council of Supply Chain Management denes logistics management as: “that part of supply chain management that plans, implements and controls the efcient, effective forward and reverse ow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers’ requirements.” While every business has different needs (and therefore different logistics strategies), certain strategies work across the board. To help business leaders with the daunting task of maintaining sustainable business processes, we’ve compiled a list of four basic logistics management tips. 1. Facilitate dialogue between employees: The character of a business is represented by the behaviours of its employees. This, in turn, is representative of a business and its objectives. By committing to strengthening employee relationships, manufacturing managers are committing to strengthening their entire business. Creating a culture of success starts with a conversation. Manufacturing managers should talk to the people they hired to learn more about their experiences. Here are some tips to keep in mind: • Take advantage of little moments. :It’s best that managers get out of their ofce and interact with as many people as they can every day. Something as simple as asking someone about their day can get them to open up about logistics issues. • Listen to what’s already being said: Just like how businesses shouldn’t assume what their customers are thinking, management should take the time to listen to what their employees are saying. • Be transparent about decisions. If an employee comes forward with a suggestion that’s unlikely to be implemented, it’s important that their manager handles it respectfully. Managers should not only explain why it won’t work, but collaborate to recommend another solution. When you talk to employees, they’ll start talking to each other, too. It’s not only a function of human nature, but a strengthening tool that allows businesses to compete efciently.

That means businesses have to be wholly transparent throughout the logistics of the purchasing process. When customers are informed, they’ll be happy. Sending informative emails, viable tracking numbers and other updates can ensure they aren’t in the dark. In turn, they’ll offer their support. 4. Learn from the competition: Inspiration can be found anywhere — even in the competition. That’s why businesses should take note of their competitors’ experiences as a source of free knowledge. In order to seize the opportunity, Yang Ming continues its business strategies to increase cargo marginal contribution and expand its customer base. Meanwhile, the company aims to efficiently control its operating costs, such as optimizing container flows to minimize container repositioning cost, feeder/inland transport and fuel consumption reduction, anticipating better performance in container transport sector in the third quarter. Moreover, Yang Ming has accelerated its fleet optimization plan
by adding fourteen 11,000 TEU chartered vessels and ten 2,800 TEU self-owned newly built vessels starting 2020. These new vessels with higher engine efficiency will achieve the advantages of lowering fleet average age and fuel cost savings, and consequently enhance the company’s long-term competitiveness. In terms of dry bulk business strategies, Yang Ming will redeliver chartered tonnage including three vessels by the second quarter of 2021 and the remaining four long-term chartered vessels during 2022~2025. Furthermore, with charter rates on the rise and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) posting gains, the recovering market will significantly improve its dry bulk business’ performance after the third quarter.
JSW Infrastructure to acquire Chettinad Builders, set to get two Terminals at Kamarajar Port, one at New Mangalore MUMBAI: JSW Infrastructure Ltd, the port operating unit of Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, is set to buy Chettinad Builders Pvt Ltd, a unit of Chennai-based Chettinad Group, in a deal valued at about Rs. 800-1,000 crore. The deal will give JSW Infrastructure control over three key bulk cargo handling facilities run by units of Chettinad Builders at Central Government ports. These include a 10-million tonne (mt) capacity common user coal handling terminal at Kamarajar Port Ltd, a 2-mt capacity multicargo terminal also at Kamarajar Port and a 10-mt capacity common user coal terminal at New Mangalore Port Trust. The Board of Kamarajar Port Ltd and the Board of Trustees of New Mangalore Port Trust have separately approved the proposals filed by Chettinad Builders seeking their no objection certificates to sell the stakes in the terminal operating special purpose vehicles to JSW, according to reliable sources.
The Chettinad deal will help JSW become the largest private operator in New Mangalore Port, handling bulk cargo such as coal and limestone as well as containers.Jindal has been scouting for acquisitions after setting a target to build port capacity that can handle 200 mt of cargo by 2022. Ports run by JSW Infrastructure at Jaigarh and Dharamtar in Maharashtra, Paradip in Odisha and in Goa currently have a capacity of over 100 mt and handled a combined 70 mt of cargo in FY20 of which some 90 per cent were the Group’s own cargo (captive cargo). The three facilities have good cargo handling potential given their location and the presence of power stations and steel mills in the hinterland. The two terminals at Kamarajar Port are also outside the ambit of the rate regulator for major ports being a corporate entity. The New Mangalore terminal operates under a liberal rate structure.

India’s exports, imports contract for 5th straight month; trade deficit narrows NEW DELHI: India’s exports contracted for the fifth straight month in July, declining by 10.21 per cent to $26.33 billion due to drop in shipments of petroleum, gems and jewellery, leather, textiles, electronic goods, and spices. In rupee terms, exports stood at Rs 1,77,305.79 crore in July 2020, as compared to Rs 1,81,190.34 crore in July 2019, registering a negative growth of 2.14 per cent, as per the data released by the Commerce and Indian Ministry. In a similar trend, imports too contracted by 28.40 per cent to $28.47 billion in July from $39.76 billion in the same month last year. In terms of rupee, imports were down 21.96 per cent

Gold imports grew by 4.17 per cent to $1.8 billion after reporting decline in eight months. The previous growth in gold imports was recorded in November 2019. Meanwhile, oil imports declined by 31.97 per cent to $6.53 billion in the month under review. Oil imports in April-July 2020-21 were $19.61 billion which was 55.88 per cent lower compared to $44.45 billion over the same period last year. It is notable that the global Brent price ($ per barrel) has
decreased by 33.11 per cent in July 2020 vis-a-vis July 2019, as per data available from the World Bank. The trade deficit for July was $4.83 billion as against a surplus of $790 million in June and a deficit of $13.43 billion in the year ago period. For the April-July period, the overall trade surplus was at $14.06 billion as compared to the deficit of $33.50 billion in April-July 2019-20. During the April-July period, India’s overall exports (merchandise and services combined) stood at $141.82 billion, reporting a negative growth of 21.99 per cent over the same period last year. Overall imports were down 40.66 per cent YoY to $127.76 billion.
July exports further consolidates as continuous arrest in decline of exports led to lower double-digit negative growth: FIEO NEW DELHI: Reacting to July exports, FIEO President Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf said that monthly figures have further consolidated as continuous arrest in the decline of exports have led to a lower double-digit negative growth of just 10.21 percent with USD 23.64 billion as against very high negative double-digit growth during April and May this fiscal. Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf said that all this has been possible because of the start of business activities across the country and business/order enquiries from almost all major economies like US, E U , C a nada, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand which has helped in bringing the exports sector to almost 90% of the level in July 2019. Though the monthly exports data depicts a lower double-digit decline in exports, but it must be seen in the context of the recovery that has exceeded our expectation as the Government through constant interaction with exporters has been understanding and more
importantly addressing the exporters’ problems, added FIEO Chief. Mr Saraf however feels that the global revival and business sentiments still have not picked up, impacting the global supply chain. He is of the view that the focus should be on F TA s a n d m o r e o f m u l t i - l a t e r a l agreements to further revive our exports and take up competition coming from smaller countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh and Taiwan. 16 out of the 30 major product groups were in positive territory during July 2020 and imports during the month showed a high double-digit decline of 28.40 percent with USD 28.47 billion. Mr Saraf added that the exports during the month for emergency and essential items apart from some labour-intensive sectors including drugs & pharmaceutical, engineering goods, cotton yarn/fabs/made-ups etc, jute manufacturing including floor covering, carpet, plastics & linoleum along with agri, plantation and meat & dairy products besides iron-ore were in positive territory showing signs of further revival with few
showing impressive double-digit growth. President, FIEO expressed his satisfaction over the improvement in labour-intensive sectors of exports, which directly or indirectly impacts employment generation in the country. FIEO President reiterated that there is a need to analyse imports as well, as such a steep decline in imports may hamper the industrial recovery in coming months. FIEO Chief said that as the global trade forecast still shows a gloomy picture, there is an urgent and immediate need for a special exports package for reviving India’s foreign trade. Shipping Ministry reduces Port Tariff rates ranging from 60% to 70% for Cruise Ships NEW DELHI: Ministry of Shipping has rationalized tariff rates for the Cruise vessels. The net effect of the rate relaxation would be an immediate reduction in port charges ranging from 60% to 70%, which will give substantial relief to the cruise industry in India, in line with the Government policy to support the economy in COVID -19 pandemic situation. Following are the rationalized tariff rates for cruise vessels: i. The port charges for a Cruise Ship to be charged at $0.085 per GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) instead of $0.35 of current rate, for first 12 hours stay ('Fixed Rate') and $5 per passenger (‘Head Tax’). The Ports will not charge any other rate like berth hire, port dues, pilotage, passenger fee, etc. ii. Fo r t h e p e r i o d e x c e e d i n g 12 hours stay, the fixed charges on cruise
ships will be equal to the Berth Hire Charges payable as per SOR (Schedule of Rates) (with 40% discount as applicable for cruise ships). iii. Further, cruise ships making A. 1-50 calls per year to get 10% rebate. B. 51-100 calls per year to get 20% rebate. C.above 100 calls per year to get 30% rebate. The above rationalized tariff shall be immediately effective for a period of one year. With a view to provide support to the cruise shipping business, which has been very adversely affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the right policy environment and infrastructure for the growth of cruise shipping and tourism will be provided. Due to policy support by Shipping Ministry since 2014,the number of call made by Cruise Ships in India has increased from
128 in 2015-16 to 593 in 2019-20. This rationalization would also help to ensure that cruise calls at Indian Ports do not dry up completely. Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of State for Shipping (I/C) said the decision is the result of the efforts being made by the Ministry of Shipping to convert the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi into reality by putting India on the map of global cruise market,both for ocean & river cruises. “It will be a big support for the cruise tourism in India, which has suffered tremendously due to the adverse economic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic. It will provide the opportunity to earn huge amount of foreign exchange and generate sizeable direct and indirect onshore employment in cr uise tourism sector of India”, the Minister added.

India to take equal, proportional measures if other countries impose trade barriers: Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: India will take "equal and proportional measures" to protect domestic manufacturing if other countries continue imposing restrictions or barriers on Indian goods, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said recently. He also said that if some countries continue exporting low-quality goods or dumping products or routing exports through
India's free trade agreement (FTA) partners, India would take actions. "Many FTA countries do not allow access to Indian goods, even though they are part of FTA protocols. They put non-tariff barriers or other restrictive measures. Gone are the days that India is going to sit and lie back and just take that...," the minister warned. He said India will have to plan its
own measures whether it is by way of antidumping duty or some restrictions. "We will have to take equal and proportional measures to protect India's domestic manufacturing." Goyal also said that the Government is looking at providing 'plug and play' infrastructure, faster clearances, more affordable finance and lower logistics cost to invite businesses to India.

“The fact that Cochin has a direct shipping line to Dubai is attracting more exporters, a Cochin-based freightforwarder said. “Most of the shipments to middle-east carry fruits, vegetables, garments and medical equipment.” He also noted that many exporters are now opting for sea transport rather than air transport, as air freight had nearly doubled when container freight rates in comparison were steadier. A source associated with Cochin port told that the port handles significant domestic coastal traffic and demand for spices within the country is adding to the container volumes. Meanwhile, traffic at Deendayal port, formerly known as Kandla port,
touched 44,000 TEU in July, compared with 40,000 TEU a year ago. Market sources attributed the increase to a shift in traffic to Deendayal port due to evacuation and logistic challenges at other ports as well as delayed shipments. “Deendayal port is typically not a container port, volumes during the month increased because container shipments which had been stuck at transshipment points earlier arrived during the month,” an Ahemdabadbased customs broker said. A Gujarat-based freight forwarder said that container shortage as well as evacuation challenges in the adjoining ports during June led to traffic shifting to other ports including Deendayal port.
He noted that the shortage in container availability at Mundra Port, Gujarat and worsening of coronavirus situation in Mumbai, Maharashtra led to exporters shifting operations to Deendayal port. India has been facing a shortfall in shipping containers as it witnessed a sharp fall in imports during the month of June when exports outperformed imports for the first time in a decade. Going ahead, market sources believe that recovery at both Cochin and Deendayal ports will continue in the coming days on account of underlying trends and with industrial activity slowly picking up, operations at other major ports in the country are also likely to witness increased container traffic in the coming months.
India exported 23 lakh personal protection equipment to 5 countries in July: Health Ministry NEW DELHI: India exported 23 lakh personal protection equipment to five countries including the US, the UK and the UAE in July, after the government relaxed export norms and this has substantially helped the country to position itself in the global market of these kits, the Union Health Ministry said. The other two countries are Senegal and Slovania, it said. A c c o r d i n g t o t h e M i n i s t r y,
the 'Make in India' spirit "embedded in the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan has resulted in providing resilience and selfsufficiency" to the country for various medical equipment including PPE. W h i l e t h e U nio n G o ve r nme nt is supplying PPE kits, N95 masks, ventilators etc., to the State Governments and union territories administrations, states are also procuring these items directly. "Between March and August 2020,
they have procured 1.40 crore indigenous PPE from their own budgetary resources. During the same period, the Centre has distributed 1.28 crore PPE to states, UTs and central institutions, free of cost," the ministry said in a statement. The Centre has been leading the graded, pre-emptive, proactive and collaborative response and management of COVID-19, along with the states union territories.

Railways gains lost ground, surpasses last year's loading for August by 7 % so far NEW DELHI: The railways is steadily gaining lost ground in freight loading by surpassing its last year's freight figures for August so far by 7 per cent, an achievement given that it was hit hard by the coronavirus crisis since March. According to official figures, the railways which first surpassed its last year's loading by just 0.3 per cent on July 27 as compared to the loading done on the same day in FY 2019-2020, repeated the feat on August 12 and August 13, by loading 14 per cent and 8 per cent more than what it did on these days last year. While on August 12, the railways loaded 3.12 MT of freight, last year on this day, it loaded 2.74 MT. The revenue for the day went up by 6 per cent or
Rs 17.3 crore as compared to last year on the same day. Similarly the next day, it loaded 3.05 MT of freight which is around 8 per cent more than what it loaded on the same day in FY 2019-2020 when it had loaded 2.82 MT of goods. The railways has also increased the speed of its freight trains. On August 12, the speed of its trains hit 47.05 kmph, while the next day it reached a high of 47.71 kmph as compared to around 24 kmph on these two days last year. The railways has set a target of achieving 50 per cent more freight loading in the current fiscal. Chairman R a i l w a y B o a r d V K Ya d a v h a s maintained that a number of concessions and discounts are being
given by the Indian Railways since last year to make its freight services more attractive for customers. The railways has achieved record loading of foodgrains, 80 per cent more than last year, and has introduced time tabled parcel services. The railways has also set up multidisciplinary business development units (BDU) at the Railway Board and zonal levels. It has also empowered zonal chiefs to attract traffic. The business development teams (BDT) will advertise and give wide publicity for generating demand, formulate traffic development proposals to draw newer clients from the industry.
India, Bangladesh traders demand trial run of vessels through protocol route on Gomati river this month AGARTALA: Traders of India and Bangladesh have demanded a trial run of vessels on the Gomati river this month to operationalise the IndoBangla protocol route between Sonamura in Tripura's Sipahijala district and Daudkandi in the neighbouring country, officials said. The 93-km long SonamuraDaudkandi waterway was included
in the list of Indo-Bangla protocol routes in May this year. A high-level team of officials of the Bangladesh Shipping Ministry sur veyed the specified waterway on Gomati river recently, Sonamura sub-divisional magistrate Subrata Majumder said. But they did not meet Indian officials during the tour, he said. "Of the 90-km stretch, around
89.5 km is in the neighbouring country. Export-import traders of the two countries proposed a trial run of barges through the protocol route," he said. Indian traders have also discussed the prospects of the water way with their Bangladeshi counterparts through a video conference.
India’s Container space tightness seen easing in Sep as imports recover after lockdown : eeSea COPENHAGEN: Container space tightness in India is expected to ease from September as imports rebound after a nationwide lockdown to contain the coronavirus, delivering more containers to India’s ports, market sources said. The lack of container availability saw India’s container freight rates surge up to 67% in July and early August on some routes as a rash of cancelled sailings and a decrease in imports during the country’s prolonged lockdown from late March reduced the number of containers arriving at India ports. However, cancelled sailings are on a downtrend in August after peaking in May, when 23% or 100 of the 439 typical sailings were voided, according to maritime intelligence company eeSea. It sees the percentage of voided sailings in India falling to 3% in September, with 11 of the 421 standard sailings slated to be cancelled.
September ’s available container capacity is expected to rise 7% year on year, snapping six straight months of lower-than-usual capacities, eeSea said, noting available capacity in May was down 22% on year. However, eeSea’s founder Simon Sundboell noted these projected sailings figures could change as carriers become more flexible about cancelling or adding sailings at short notice than they were a year ago. “Whereas in the past we would consider September a ‘done deal’, meaning all blanks [are] communicated by now, we [are still seeing] changes to September today,” he said. Meanwhile, an uptick in imports – and a resultant increase in vessels calling on India – is also supporting the rise in container space. India, which is typically a net importer, turned net exporter for the first time in a decade amid the drop in imports during the lockdown. A
freight forwarder said easing bottlenecks could also improve trade flows. “Industries had a total shutdown during the lockdown period so they did not have means or need to continue imports. In addition, displaced demand for container space from previously firm air freight prices could dissipate. India's forex reserves rise by $3.623 billion to record $538.191 billion MUMBAI: The country's foreign exchange reserves swelled by $3.623 billion to a record high of $538.191 billion in the week ended August 7, RBI data showed on Friday. In the previous week ended July 31, the reserves had increased by
$11.938 billion to reach $534.568 billion. The reserves had crossed the half-atrillion mark for the first time in the week ended June 5, 2020, after it had jumped by $8.223 billion to $501.703 billion. FCAs rose by $1.464 billion to $492.293 billion in the reporting week,
the RBI data showed. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. Gold reserves were up by $2.160 billion to $39.785 billion.

Shipping Ministry reshuffles Deputy Chairman of Chennai Port, Cochin Port & Kolkata Dock NEW DELHI: Ministry of Shipping on 14 August appointed S Balaji Arunkumar, an IRTS officer of 1997 batch and currently the Deputy Chairman of Kolkata Dock System under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust (erstwhile Kolkata Port Trust), as the new Deputy Chairman of Chennai Port Trust with immediate effect. Cyril C George, who was holding the post of Deputy Chairman in Chennai Port Trust, has been transferred to
Cochin Port Trust and posted as Deputy Chairman there. Likewise, Cochin Port’s Deputy Chairman A K Mehra now transferred and posted as deputy chairman of Kolkata Dock System under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust. Arunkumar was deputy chairman of Kolkata Dock System since April 2016. Prior to joining the post, he was senior general manager of Container Corporation of India, Chennai.
Just In Time Arrival Guide issued to support smarter, more efficient shipping LONDON: A new Just In Time Arrival Guide which aims to provide both port and shipping sectors with practical guidance on how to facilitate Just In Time Arrivals has been released. The Guide has been developed by the Global Industry Alliance to support low carbon shipping (Low Carbon GIA), based on research and discussion amongst its membership, and the Guide documents the findings of a series of industry roundtables which brought together nearly 50 companies and organizations who are key stakeholders in the port call process. Widely recognized as a means of increasing port efficiency and port call optimization, the successful implementation of JIT Arrivals can have a significant environmental impact through reduced GHG emissions from optimizing the ships speed to arrive just in time. The concept is based on the ship maintaining an optimal operating speed, to arrive at the Pilot Boarding Place when the availability is assured of: 1. berth; 2. fairway; and 3. nautical services (pilots, tugs, linesmen). Arrivals also contributes to reduced time at anchorage and therefore reduced congestion in the port area. It is estimated that ships spend up to 9% of their time waiting at anchorage, which could be reduced through the implementation of JIT Arrivals. The Guide provides a holistic approach to Just In Time Arrivals, considering contractual aspects to its implementation as well as operational. The Guide is envisaged as a useful toolkit for many stakeholders including shipowners, ship operators, charterers, ship agents, shipbrokers, port authorities, terminals, nautical
and vessel service providers. All these actors ultimately play a key role in implementing the necessary changes and facilitating the exchange of communication required to realize JIT Arrivals. The Low Carbon GIA is a public–private partnership with the aim to identify and develop innovative solutions to address common barriers to the uptake and implementation of energy efficiency technologies and operational measures. The Low Carbon GIA was originally established under the framework of the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships Project (GloMEEP Project), and since the conclusion of the GloMEEP Project at the end of 2019, the Low Carbon GIA has been operating under the framework of the IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project.
NYK Line, ClassNK & JMUC begins Joint R&D for use of Ammonia in Marine Transportation to Reduce GHG Emissions World's First Effort to Stably Supply Ammonia Fuel to Oceangoing Vessels T O K Y O : NYK Line, Japan Marine United Corporation, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) signed a joint R&D agreement for the commercialization of an ammonia-fueled ammonia gas carrier (AFAGC) that would use ammonia as the main fuel, in addition to an ammonia floating storage and regasification barge (A-FSRB). Since carbon dioxide (CO2) is not emitted when ammonia is burned, it is viewed to have promise as a next-generation fuel that could mitigate shipping’s impact on global warming. In addition, it is said that zero emissions can be realized by utilizing CO2-free hydrogen as a raw material for ammonia. In particular, a significant reduction in CO2 emissions is expected to be achieved by replacing coal and natural gas as the main fuels for power generation. Parties in Japan have succeeded in generating electricity through the use of a gas turbine with 100% ammonia. In addition, innovative next-generation thermalpower-generation technologies that contribute to the
reduction of CO2 emissions are being developed. These technologies are aimed at generating electricity by co-firing ammonia at coal-fired power stations. The reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a significant issue in the marine transportation sector. In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set the goal of halving GHG emissions from the international maritime sector by 2050 and reaching a target of zero as early as the end of this century. Ammonia is expected to be used as an alternative fuel for vessels. As demand for ammonia fuel is foreseen to expand, the need for a transportation infrastructure for stable supply is expected to increase. Thus, the companies have decided to start this joint R&D of AFAGC and A-FSRB.
