DPA signs MoU with Umeandus Technologies for development of Next Generation Transportation & Logistics Infrastructure GANDHINAGAR: Shri S.K. Ltd. for the work “Development of Next Generation Transportation & Logistics Infrastructure for DPA and its eco-system” at the Port-Led city development Gujarat session of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 at Gandhinagar. Sailing towards a Brighter Future: Gujarat's Vision 2047 unveiled Cont’d. from Pg. 3 This visionary document, resonating with India's Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and Maritime India Vision 2030, marks a transfor mative step in enhancing Gujarat's maritime sector, building on the progress since GMB's establishment in 1982 and the pivotal 1995 PPP port policy. The Vision 2047 document for the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) outlines a strategic roadmap with goals segmented into short-term, mid-term, and long-term objectives: Short-Ter m Goals: These include immediate organizational restructuring of GMB, modernization and mechanization of ports, green initiatives, and initial steps in digital transformation and maritime education. M i d -Te r m G o a l s : Fo c u s s h i f t s t o e x p a n d i n g infrastructure, such as developing large ports and advancing greenfield port projects. This period also emphasizes full-scale technological integration and strengthening of maritime education. Long-Term Goals: The final phase aims to realize the vision for 2047, with goals like achieving ultra-mega port status, establishing Gujarat as a leader in digital maritime operations, and completing ecological conservation projects. This visionary plan aligns with India's Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and the Maritime India Vision 2030, responding adeptly to the evolving global maritime landscape. GMB's vision also aligns with the global sustainable maritime practices directive. Spanning 24 years with 24 goals and 120 milestones, the vision document outlines the
following 11 key areas: 1. Elevating GMB to global maritime leadership. 2. Developing world-class maritime infrastructure. 3. Setting a global benchmark in logistics innovation by seamlessly blending air cargo with sea plane operations. 4. Establishing green, sustainable ports. 5. Leading in digital transformation in the maritime sector. 6. Positioning Gujarat as a world hub for ship recycling, building, and repair. 7. Cultivating maritime leaders through Gujarat Maritime University. 8. A d v a n c i n g m a r i t i m e a r b i t r a t i o n w i t h Gujarat International Maritime Arbitration Centre 9. Developing a premier international port city. 10. Enhancing commercial maritime services. 11. Strategic policy interventions for sectoral advancement. The document is testament to Gujarat's maritime ambition and potential, aligning with global economic transformations. This initiative is a commitment to leveraging Gujarat's vast coastline and ports, aiming to foster sustainable, inclusive growth and establish Gujarat as a leading maritime powerhouse. This strategic blueprint exemplifies the Gujarat port sector's dedication to crafting a future-proof maritime industry in Gujarat, perfectly in sync with the national vision of Amrit Kaal 2047. It emphasizes sustainable marine resource utilization, community development, trade enhancement, and maritime education. The collaborative efforts between the state, the port sector, and stakeholders are crucial in realizing these ambitious objectives, setting Gujarat on a path to becoming a benchmark in global maritime excellence.

Gujarat and DP World sign Agreements to strengthen Logistics in the Indian State DP World to develop mul -purpose deep-dra ports, container terminals, SEZs, and Ga Shak Cargo Terminals (GCT) in Gujarat GANDHINAGAR: DP World has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth INR 25,000 crores (INR 250 billion) with the Government of Gujarat, covering the development of new ports, terminals, and economic zones, strengthening its commitment to supporting trade in a growing Indian state. Signed at Gandhinagar, during Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, the MoUs highlight Gujarat’s prowess as a role model of development and the Growth Engine of the nation while leveraging its logistics and maritime infrastructure. D P Wo r l d G r o u p C h a i r m a n a n d C E O , Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem exchanged MoUs around potential investments in Gujarat with Mr M K Das, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat in the august presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, and Shri Narendra Modi, Honourable Prime Minister of India, as part of the summit in Gandhinagar. The MoUs underscore DP World’s commitment to facilitating trade in Gujarat by developing: • Multi-purpose deep-draft ports in South Gujarat and around the western coast of Gujarat towards Kutch, • Special Economic Zones in Jamnagar and Kutch, • Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCT) and Private Freight Stations at Dahej, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bedi and Morbi DP World has also signed an MoU with Gujarat Maritime Board to jointly identify opportunities to develop additional ports along the coast of Gujarat. Commenting on the signing of the MoUs, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman and CEO, said, “We are very committed to India, where we have been operating for nearly 20 years. In that time, we invested almost $2.5 billion and we are going to invest more in the next 3 years in these projects. The policies of the government and our experience here is what gives us the confidence to do even more in India. We have also been present in Gujarat since 2003 and are proud to have been part of the state’s growth story.
We are honoured to continue our partnership in the state by committing to strengthening its logistics and maritime infrastructure to further enable trade in Gujarat.” DP World's existing investments in Gujarat include a container terminal in Mundra, along with rail connected private freight terminals at Ahmedabad and Hazira. This is complemented by cold storage facilities in Surat and Bharuch, freight forwarding offices in Ahmedabad and Gandhidham, and express cargo services across the state. Additionally, DP World ensures global connectivity for businesses in the region by running weekly coastal services via DP World's Unifeeder Group, linking Mundra, Kandla, and Hazira ports to several international ports. The company recently launched a first-of-its-kind dedicated scheduled Rail Freight Service, ‘SARAL’ connecting traders from south Gujarat such as Surat, Vapi, Valsad Vadodara, Bharuch, Ankleshwar to the markets in and around North Capital Region (NCR). On 25 August 2023, DP World signed a $510 million concession agreement with the Deendayal Port Authority to develop, operate and maintain a new 2.19 million TEU per year mega-container terminal at Tu n a -Te k r a i n K a n d l a . O n c o m m e n c e m e n t , this greenfield terminal will have state of the art equipment and a 1,100 m berth capable of handling nextgeneration vessels carrying more than 18,000 TEUs.
MTHL : Multiplying impact on Port-connectivity & Logistics Transportation in Mumbai, says Shashi Kiran Shetty MUMBAI: Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) or Atal Setu, the longest sea bridge is an infrastructure landmark and underlines the Government's steadfast focus on driving economic growth through infrastructure development, said Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty, Founder and Chairman, Allcargo Group upon the inauguration of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). “MTHL which connects Nhava Sheva to mainland Mumbai will have a multiplying impact on the portconnectivity and logistics transportation value chain in Mumbai in particular as well as across the country in general by cutting down transit time. It acts as a gateway to unprecedented possibilities in logistics by revolutionising the logistics transportation landscape. “MTHL is a prime example of how synergy among all stakeholders can bring about a transformative impact in building a robust multimodal logistics transport e c o s y s t e m i n t h e c o u n t r y. M T H L a l o n g w i t h Navi Mumbai International Airport which is nearing its
commercial launch will have an enormous impact on the logistics competitiveness of the country. By driving broadbased industrial growth, such infrastructure development will make India a global manufacturing hub. MTHL will boost hinterland connectivity, benefitting a larger population and driving Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty the GDP growth. It will pave the way for Mumbai, the financial capital of India, to realise its potential and be on a par with Hong Kong, Singapore or other key financial centres in Asia. “In addition to enhancing transit efficiency, MTHL will play a key role in reducing carbon emission in the Mumbai City, concludes the statement by Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel participates in a Seminar on ‘Port-Led City Development’ • Gujarat is advancing with the vision of "Ports for Prosperity and Ports for Progress." • VGGS has posi oned Gujarat as a pioneer and a role model state for port development over the last two decades. • The current focus in Gujarat is on the development of port ci es and greenfield ports. GANDHINAGAR: Chief Minister S h r i B h u p e n d r a Pa t e l , w h i l e participating in the seminar on portled development under Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2024 stated that, under the visionary l e a d e r s h i p o f Pr i m e M i n i s t e r Shri Narendra Modi, a new history of prosperity has been created through ports in the country. Gujarat, too, has embraced the mantra of "Ports for Prosperity and Ports for Progress." The Chief Minister emphasized his commitment to contribute beyond the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted that, The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit which began in 2003 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister has made Gujarat a pioneer in port-led development in the last two decades. The state has been established as a role model for port-led city development and rightly so, the theme for the 10th edition of the Vibrant Summit is set as "Gateway to the Future." He highlighted that Gujarat, with its extensive 1600-kilometre coastline, holds the distinction of
having the country's longest coastal stretch. The Chief Minister underscored the strategic initiatives undertaken by the state government, under the guidance of the Prime Minister, will transform Gujarat's coastline into a key gateway for national prosperity. The state is actively involved in the concurrent expansion and enhancement of existing ports, along with the establishment of new port cities and greenfield ports. Highlighting that Gujarat has more than 49 ports including both major and minor, the Chief Minister pointed out that these ports handle around 39% of the country's cargo. Gujarat's robust road connectivity and maritime development contribute to its high ranking in the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) index. The MTHL, also known as Atal Setu, is named after former PM Atal Bihari
Vajpayee. It originates from Sewri in Mumbai and terminates at Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka in Raigad district. It has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore. Wagh added that in the first year after MTHL is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, the enhanced connectivity will result in a substantial decrease in transportation time for cargo movement, thereby elevating JNPT’s o v e r a l l o p e r a t i o n a l e f f i c i e n c y. The improved operational efficiency will, in turn, contribute to a more streamlined supply chain, leading to reduced operational costs, and raise the port’s competitiveness on a global scale. MTHL is India’s longest sea bridge, spanning 22 km, with a 16.5km extension into the sea. Its influence on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will be profound. India, US discuss ways to boost trade, investments ties at TPF meet NEW DELHI: India and the US on Friday discussed ways to further boost trade and investment ties between the two countries during the Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meet in New Delhi. The 14th TPF meet was co chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai. “Amidst productive deliberations, both sides reiterated their commitment to enhance trade and investment ties for adding further momentum to the growing India-US partnership,” Goyal said in a post on
social media platform X. India is seeking fast-tracking American health regulator’s USFDA inspections, or audit of domestic pharma firms. United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approval is required to sell medicines in the US market. Before giving the approval, the USFDA authorities visit premises of manufacturing units for checking quality standards. The last TPF meeting was held in Washington in January 2023. TPF is a platform to resolve trade and investment issues between the two countries. It has five focus groups
— agriculture, investment, innovation, and creativity (intellectual property rights), services, and tariff and non-tariff barriers. The US is the largest trading partner of India. America accounts for about 20 per cent of India’s total exports in goods and is a key market for services sectors like IT. The bilateral trade between the countries has increased to USD 129.4 billion in 2022-23 from USD 120 billion in 2021-22. India received USD 6 billion in foreign direct investment from the US in 2022-23.
BIMCO: 2024 brings a whopping 41% surge in Containership deliveries, beating 2023 record OSLO: In 2023, global shipyards delivered 350 new containerships with a total capacity of 2.2 million TEU, beating the previous record from 2015 when 1.7 million TEU was delivered. The 2023 record is now likely to be beaten already in 2024, BIMCO announced. As 2023 saw a relatively low level of container ship recycling, new ships entering the fleet caused an 8% rise in the capacity of the container fleet, the fastest growth registered since 2011. Ships larger than 15,000 TEU continued to dominate deliveries and the segment grew 28% after 1.3 million TEU were delivered in 2023. In 2024, 478 container ships with a capacity of 3.1 million TEU are scheduled for delivery, beating the 2023 record by 41%. The container fleet capacity is therefore expected to grow by 10% in 2024, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst Niels Rasmussen said. Even though recycling of ships is expected to increase in 2024 the fleet could still grow by nearly 2.8 million
TEU and exceed 30 million TEU by the end of 2024 for the first time in history. Despite the long-anticipated demolition flurry, the predictions on recycling spurred by the environmental regulations still haven’t translated into reality. BIMCO’s data shows that another 83 ships larger than 15,000 TEU are expected to be delivered in 2024, adding 1 . 4 millio n TEU to the segment’s capacity and doubling its capacity in just four years. Chinese shipyards have benefitted most from the record high orders, delivering nearly 55% of all ship capacity to be delivered during 2023 and 2024 and solidifying China as the premier location for building container ships. South Korean yards are expected to deliver 38% of the ship capacity. “Once all the ships have been delivered, the container fleet capacity will have grown 10%. However, the container trades are expected to grow
significantly slower. We forecast that the increase in container volumes will increase the demand for ship capacity by 3-4% in 2024,” Rasmussen noted. In the meantime, the average sailing speed of container ships has reduced from 14.3 knots in 2022 to 13.9 knots in 2023 and could fall further in 2024. This lowers the efficiency of the fleet and 3-4% extra capacity may have to be deployed to ensure that the 2024 volume increase can be accommodated. The imbalance between supply and demand is set to widen in 2024. However, BIMCO estimates that prolonged disruption in the Red Sea, forcing ships to sail via Cape of Good Hope, could tighten the supply/demand balance. “Another 3 million TEU are meanwhile scheduled to be delivered during 2025-2026 and unless recycling increases significantly, the market imbalance appears set to return once the Red Sea situation is resolved,” Rasmussen concluded.
India likely to clock 6.9-7.2% GDP growth in FY’24: Deloitte MUMBAI: India is expected to clock a GDP growth in the range of 6.9-7.2 per cent in the current financial year on the back of improving economic fundamentals, Deloitte India said in an update to its quarterly outlook. As per the first advance estimates of national income released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the Indian economy is estimated to grow by 7.3 per cent in the 2023-24 fiscal, against 7.2 per cent a year ago, mainly due to a good show by mining & quarrying, manufacturing and certain segments of services sectors. Deloitte India’s recent economic outlook report said there is an
underlying momentum that is building up in the Indian economy, as seen in the improving economic fundamentals. India’s current account deficit (CAD) was at 1.9 per cent of GDP in 2022-23 and is expected to be further lower in 2023-24, it said. Further, foreign exchange reserves remain at a comfortable level of Rs 568 billion which is equivalent to over 10 months of import cover. “Improving economic fundamentals have buoyed our outlook and we expect India to grow between 6.9 per cent and 7.2 per cent over FY2023-24 in our baseline scenario, followed by 6.4 per cent and
6.7 per cent over the next year. “And, while the global economic scenario remains modest and will impact the Indian economy, the country will be able to navigate uncertainties better than the rest of the world,” said R u m k i M a j u m d a r, E c o n o m i s t , Deloitte India. Russia to renew Chennai-Vladivostok route; ofcials to visit Chennai GANDHINAGAR: Russian D e p u t y Fa r E a s t a n d A r c t i c Development Minister Anatoly Bobrakov recently emphasised that Russia is planning to renew the Chennai-Vladivostok route, stressing that they are also planning to visit Chennai at the end of this month for further discussions. Russian Minister Bobrakov attended the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, where he emphasised that the summit is pretty effective for their delegation. “The summit is beautiful and pretty effective for our delegation,” he said. “We are planning to renew the line from Chennai to Vladivostok and we are planning to visit India again to
visit Chennai at the end of January to discuss future steps to renew this line. We think that will be very profitable and for the mutual benefit of our countries,” he said. The maritime transport corridor from the port of Chennai to the port of Vladivostok functioned successfully in the Soviet era. In 2019, the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways signed an agreement for developing marine traffic between the ports of Vladivostok and Chennai on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, as reported by TASS. When asked about the major areas where India and Russia can collaborate and

India explores measures to mitigate Red Sea crisis impact on export trade NEW DELHI: Indian Government and shipping industry stakeholders have realised the urgency to deal with growing trade challenges from the Red Sea shipping crisis, as market rating forecasters generally expected the emerging economy to grow faster than its larger counterparts. A high-level committee at the Government level has been set up to study and identify alternative trade opportunities from markets remaining largely insulated from the crisis. Indian exports to the United States, Europe and the Mediterranean are expected to take a hit in the coming months due to the Red Sea-linked supply chain disruptions. The latest available Government data reported a 15% year-over-year fall in Indian RMG exports for November, aggravating from an 8% drop in October. At the same time, Naren Goenka, Chair man of AEPC, expressed concerns over rising shipping costs as a consequence of the Red Sea crisis. “Indian exporters fear that average freight costs may go up by 25% as insurance premiums may rise,” said Goenka. He added, “This (crisis) can further delay our delivery schedules and increase our logistics costs, which at the moment is a pressing concern. The solution to this will surely be multilateral and multiparty participation, which the world should not delay any further.” AEPC recently unveiled plans to push Indian apparel exports by value from US$16-17 billion at present to US$40 billion by 2030 as trade diversification trends within Asia gain pace.
DFC from Dadri to Vetarna to be completed by March: Ashwini Vaishnaw GANDHINAGAR: The Dedicated freight corridor from Dadri to Vetarna will be completed by March this year and this will mark the completion of the DFC in the State. The Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a meeting with the officials of the Indian Railway and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) at the Operation Control Centre (OCC) of DFCCIL located at Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. Talking to reporters after t h e m e e t i n g Va i s h n a w s a i d t h e Dedicated freight corridor between Dadri and Sanand was fully operation and the remaining portion from Sanand top Vetarna will be operational by March 2024. This will mark completion of the 95% of the DFC corridor including the east west corridor also. The minister said that only a small
portion of the DFC corridor from Vetarna to Jawaharlal Nehru port trust is remaining and that was due to land acquisitions in Mumbai. However, the land acquistin has been completed and the work has also begun. The entire corridor is likely to be completed vby the end of this year. Vaishnaw said that after 2014, the work of commissioning the Dedicated Freight Corridor gained momentum and now almost 89% of the work has been completed. The project was designed in 2004 and approved in 2007 and till 2014 the progress was negligible. “Due to the Dedicated Freight Corridor, the cargo trains are now being run on this corridor while the passenger carrying trains are run on the regular conventional network. As on date, around 300 to 350 freight trains are
plying daily over both Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors which has enhanced the logistic efficiency by reduction in transit time by around 50% to 70%. He said that with the DFC the capacity to have passengers trains on the conventional track will also increase. Giving break up of the work, the Officer said that from Sanand to Makarpura was in the completion stage and will be completed by March this year. Further from, makarpura to Gothan the trail is going on and from Gothan to Holwad the track is already commissioned. He said that DFFCIL has been given the target to complete the track from Holwad to Vetarna by March 2024 and the work is going on in full swing.

Drewry: World Container Index up by 15% last Week L O N D O N : D r e w r y ’ s Wo r l d Container Index increased by 15% to $3,072 per 40ft container last week. Drewry’s detailed assessment for Thursday, 11 January 2024 • The composite index increased by 15% to $3,072 per 40ft container last week and has increased by 44% when compared with the same week last year. • The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $3,072 per 40ft container is the highest since October 2022 and is 116% more than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420. • The average composite index for the year-to-date is $2,871 per 40ft container, which is $196 higher than the 10-year average rate of $2,675 (which was inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period). • Freight rates on Shanghai to Genoa increased by 25% to $5,213 per feu. Followed by rates on Shanghai to Rotterdam which rose by 23% to $4,406 per 40ft box. Likewise, rates on Rotterdam to Shanghai elevated by 19% to $652 per 40ft container. Similarly, rates on Shanghai to New York increased by 8% to $4,170 per feu. Also, rates on Shanghai to Los Angeles increased by 2% to $2,790 per 40ft box. In the same way, rates on New York to Rotterdam and Rotterdam to New York surged by 1% to $599 and $1,513 per 40ft box respectively. Conversely rates on Los Angeles to Shanghai dropped by 1% to $766 per 40ft box. Drewry anticipates EastWest spot rates to increase in the coming weeks, due to the Red Sea/Suez situation.
Red Sea: Major short-term capacity impact COPENHAGEN: The Red Sea crisis is clearly not over yet, and the carriers’ networks are presently extremely volatile and prone to quick changes. From a shipper perspective, the transit times will clearly increase with the round of Africa routing. It will be a bit more than a week longer from Asia to North Europe, and up to two weeks longer into the Mediterranean. Whilst this is certainly a serious problem for many shippers, we should keep in mind that these disruptions are no way near to the ones caused during the pandemic. We would like to make it abundantly clear that the current capacity outlook is fraught with a high degree of uncertainty, however, the present data shows that the shippers could expect a capacity crunch for Asian exports in the coming weeks. On Asia-North Europe, the impact is quite visible, due to a combination of some services being held back in departure from Asia in the short-term awaiting re-routing, and some services clearly arriving late into Asia, thereby causing a rapid shortfall in the middle weeks of January, with a steep capacity drop now expected for the week of January 22nd. The seeming capacity spike in late December/early January is more an artifact of origin delays and should be given less attention. A similar trend is seen on both Asia-Mediterranean and Asia-North America East Coast, but a week earlier.
That said, the temptation is to call this a disaster, but such language would be inappropriate, when the current crisis is placed in the context of what the supply chains had to endure during the pandemic disruptions.
Forex reserves snap 7-week gaining streak, dip $5.9 billion MUMBAI: India’s foreign exchange reser ves dipped by $5.90 billion to $617.30 billion for the week ending January 5 after rising for seven weeks straight, the latest data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed. Previously, forex reserves witnessed a surge of $2.76 billion to $623.20 billion for the week ending on December 29.
Foreign currency assets (FCAs) dropped by $4.97 billion to $546.65 billion, according to the Weekly Statistical Supplement released by the RBI. Gold reserves decreased by $839 million to $47.49 billion, whereas SDRs were down by $67 million to $18.30 billion. Reserve position in the IMF dipped by $26 million to $4.87 billion.
