MSC provides a single point of contact, offering end-to -end ser vices for customers in the liquid cargo supply chain. With unrivalled global connectivity across land and sea and an extensive port and depot network close to liquid cargo production regions, MSC’s Liquid Cargo Solutions offer flexible capacity and specifications, supporting the Cont’d. APM Terminals Pipavav commissions captive solar power at the Port PIPAVAV: Under ‘Gujarat Green Gateway’ project, APM Terminals Pipavav has commissioned 1,000 kWp (kilowatt peak) DC capacity solar power plant at the Port for self-consumption. With commissioning of Rooftop solar power project, the Port will reduce overall energy consumption from Grid supply. The solar power will help in replacing approx. 10% of Port’s total energy consumption as well as result in reducing carbon footprints to the tune of 1100 tonnes per year. Cont’d. Pg. 6 .. Refer Pg. 2

These sustainability initiatives under the project ‘Gujarat Green Gateway’ are undertaken to reduce the carbon footprint; while improving livelihood of employees, workers as well as surrounding community at the Port. Commenting on new solar plant, Mr. Jakob Friis S ø r e n s e n , M D , A P M Te r m i n a l s P i p a v a v s a i d , “Energy optimization and using renewable energy for port operation; are critical components of reducing the overall
carbon emissions at the Port. Globally, APM Terminals is moving towards zero carbon logistics and we at Pipavav are contributing our bit to conserve environment and fulfil our Group’s commitment to net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2040. The initiatives under ‘Gujarat Green Gateway’ are designed towards this objective and we are pleased to share that this initiative will help us in reducing around 1,100 tons of carbon emissions per year.” In the last few years, the Port has reduced considerable carbon emissions through various initiatives such as development of green belt, replacement of conventional high-power lights with LED lights, using e cars, reusing treated wastewater for plantation of more than 0.25 million trees and mangroves plantation in over 600 hectares in Gujarat.

MSC becomes First Carrier to offer in-house Liquid Cargo Solutions Cont’d. from Pg. 4 MSC experts fit carefully selected flexibags at its depots prior to cargo pick-up, which removes the requirement for haulage to third-party fitting locations, reducing road miles, saving time and money and helping customers to meet their sustainability needs. MSC Liquid Cargo Solutions are already available at depot facilities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Your Experts in Flexibag Supply and Fit MSC works with dedicated suppliers of high-quality flexibags, and with its customers, to ensure each flexibag is tailored, selecting the right size and specifications according to the cargo’s needs. Flexibags allow customers to fill dry containers with up to 24,000 litres of non-hazardous liquid cargo – such as edible oils, wine, petroleum products and chemicals – offering a safe and cost-effective alternative to other liquid bulk transportation methods, with less packaging than conventional ISO tanks. This solution is currently available in 21 countries across the world, and we are already looking at the potential for expansion to MSC depots worldwide.” Making Transporting Liquids Flexible, Sustainable and Easy Whilst liquid cargo is traditionally transported in ISO tanks, there are many advantages to making the switch to flexibags, including the fact that flexibags are single-use and fully recyclable, making them the hygienic choice for shipping edible cargoes. In addition, thanks to MSC’s bulkhead recycling scheme, bulkheads used for liquid cargo transport can be reused efficiently, reducing waste and improving supply chain sustainability. Flexibags can be installed into any 20’ container which, once the bag is removed, is ready for re-use, removing the need for repositioning and saving cost. In addition, there is no need to clean the container after use, as with ISO tanks. MSC agencies currently offering Liquid Cargo Solutions include: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, UK and Uruguay with more to follow in 2022.
FIATA: What the Future International Trade Alliance means for Freight Forwarders A M S T E R D A M : T h e Fu t u r e International Trade (FIT) Alliance was formed recently by DCSA, FIATA, BIMCO, t h e I C C a n d S W I F T, w i t h t h e s e organisations signing a memorandum of understanding to standardise the digitalisation of international trade. Representatives of the FIT Alliance spoke to these Global Associations to discover what its aims mean to them and their members. Thomas Bagge, DCSA CEO, recently shared his thoughts on The Future International Trade Alliance, as did Grant Hunter, Director for Standards, Innovation and Research at BIMCO. Here, we discover the view from freight forwarders with Stéphane Graber, Director General of FIATA. We began by asking Stéphane: Why did FIATA join the FIT Alliance? Stéphane Graber (SG): At FIATA, we are fully convinced of the importance and benefits of digitalisation and what this can mean for freight forwarders, which is optimised processes and more reliable services for them and their customers. Clearly, collaboration is key, what does that mean to freight forwarders and FIATA? SG: It is important to us that freight forwarders play a driving role in how their activities are digitalised and, to this end, we developed the FIATA Bill of Lading (eFBL) data standard, aligned with the UN/CEFACT reference data model, to facilitate systems interoperability for all parties. This was a first step towards a fully digital bill of lading (B/L), but exchanges between different platforms require a collective resolution, partly because of the legal framework. Through the FIT Alliance we aim to work together, as key organisations within the supply chain, to overcome the technical electronic bill of lading (eBL) interoperability challenges. Together, the organisations aim to promote and support common legislative conditions across international
jurisdictions and platforms, so that digitalisation is accelerated and paperless trade becomes the way we all do business in the future. What top three benets do you see your members gaining from the Alliance? SG: Firstly, interoperability of standards. Through the FIT Alliance we will ensure that FIATA’s digital standards, including those for the eFBL, are interoperable with standards developed by other organisations so that we can all exchange information fluently. FIATA sees great importance in leading the discussion on data ownership and interoperability. Secondly, technical interoperability to enable the transfer of eBLs from one platform to another. Finally, the legal acceptance of digital documents. This is probably one of the biggest challenges ahead of us. Through the work of the Alliance, we should encourage countries around the world to adopt harmonised legislation that will enable the legal recognition of electronic transferable records in more regions. We can bring about all kinds of technical solutions but without that, it will not happen. What does the Alliance mean more widely, for international shipping and trade? SG: Quite simply, it’s the dream! And all logistics industry players share the same dream – the seamless transfer of eBLs between all those involved in shipments – shippers, buyers, carriers, freight forwarders, banks, authorities, warehouses, insurers – we are all looking for that because it will help save time and money for everyone. The FIT Alliance shows a joint commitment to facilitating this through a collaborative approach. We need to work together to realise the dream, respecting, considering and protecting the different stakeholders with their specific needs and requirements, because we all play different roles in the supply chain.

Special Secretary, Logistics Division alongwith MoRTH, MoCA, MoR, MoPSW, MoP, DoT deliberate on enhancing Logistic capacities and PM GatiShakti NEW DELHI - The Network Planning Group (NPG) held its 20th meeting on June 8, 2022 at Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi. It was chaired by the Special Secretary, Logistics Division, DPIIT Sh. Amrit Lal Meena and saw active participation from member Ministries/departments including MoRTH, MoCA, MoR, MoPSW, MoP, DoT and Niti Ayog. The forum saw senior officials from these Ministries deliberate on various agendas on Logistic capacities and PM GatiShakti. Applauding the recently launched GatiShakti Sanchar portal of the Department of Telecommunications, it was highlighted that all 36 States and UTs have been integrated into the portal. Addressing the Industry Stakeholders at the INDIA INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN Conference, organised by PHDCCI, Shri Som Parkash, said India is one of the most attractive destinations for investment in the World and Government has prepared some important frameworks to help thrive businesses in the Country. One of them is PM Gati Shakti masterplan and its implementation, which will help us to achieve our aim in Logistic efficiency. An infrastructure master plan will make a difference through integrated approach by breaking the entrenched silos over six years, which has received Rs 20,000 crore allocation in this year’s Budget. Propelled by seven engines – roads, railways, airports, ports, mass transport, waterways and logistics – PM Gati Shakti is an idea whose time has come, added the Minister. The Minister appreciated PHDCCI for being the forerunner in having a specalised forum for Gati Shakti, the contribution for which will go long way in aligning the objectives with the PM's Vision of being a Globally leading economy. To help make this plan success, the Minister urged all industry stakeholders to work in this direction collectively to achieve its significant results. Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Special Secretary – Logistics, Dept of Commerce & Industry, Govt of India, said that a lot work is being done in this direction, mainly on component cost of transportation & fuel and inventory cost to bring in logistic efficiency. Time and cost overruns are major factors of concern in the implementation of the plan. Steps are being taken to bring them down to zero level. In PM GatiShakti master plan, 600 layers of all different Ministries of State Governments are integrated on digital platform for better coordination and early
resolution. Gaps are identified and taken up on priority basis r e g a r d i n g transportation to eliminate unnecessary congestion, said Shri Amrit Lal Meena. Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI, mentioned that the Indian logistics sector is on a big growth tide. According to the domestic rating agency ICRA, India's logistics sector is expected to grow at a rate 8-10 per cent over the medium term. This is an improvement over the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8 per cent at which the industry grew during the last five years. Going forward, the Government’s focus is to bring down the cost of logistics from the present 14.4 per cent. The development of the logistics sector is also extremely important for the Indian economy, as it will boost exports, create jobs, and give the country a prominent position in the global supply chain, said Shri Multani.

Further Digitalization deemed necessary in Customs for Global society : WCO Secretary General SINGAPORE/BRUSSELS - On 8 June 2022, at the invitation of Mr. Ho Chee Pong, Director- General of Singapore Customs and 2022’s Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Directors-General of Customs Meeting, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), participated in the 11th ASEAN - WCO Consultation. In his opening remarks, Dr. Mikuriya emphasized that further digitalization is deemed necessary in Customs to contribute to the global society while adding that Customs digitalization was one of the main topic at the “Digital ASEAN” session which he attended during the World Economic Forum in Davos last month. Dr. Mikuriya also appreciated the ASEAN Progress Updates on Customs Integration and ASEAN Single Window,
including the areas of regional Harmonized Tariff Nomenclature, Customs Transit System, AEO Mutual Recognition Arrangement, L o w - Va l u e S h i p m e n t a n d E-Commerce. He associated the progress in the ASEAN region to global initiatives and trends and expected further sharing of best practices from the ASEAN countries in areas mentioned above. Answering to the comment from Mr. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community, Dr. Mikuriya explained that Green Customs and circular economy are topics that WCO will explore throughout this year, and encouraged ASEAN Members to actively participate and contribute to the discussions, including at the Green Customs Global Conference scheduled for 27 and 28 June 2022. WTO report highlights role of Trade in meeting SDGs and assisting economic recovery GENEVA - The WTO has highlighted the role of trade in helping countries recover from the COVID-19 pandemic in a report submitted to the UN’s High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development to be held in July. The report also examines the WTO’s contribution to improving livelihoods, achieving sustainable development and making trade work for people, priorities on which Director-General
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has placed renewed emphasis. The WTO report contains an analysis of the trade performance of developing countries. It also discusses the impact of the conflict in Ukraine and looks into trade topics related to the SDGs. Five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be under consideration at the 2022 HLPF, which will take place from 5 July to 7 July and from 11 July to 15 July.

Growth may slow down in Container market : BIMCO OSLO - A combination of high demand and congestion has remained the order of the container market during the past six months. "Thus, high freight rates, charter rates, and asset prices as well as supply chain disruptions and liner operators reporting record results are appearing commonplace," BIMCO said in its latest update. Container volumes, however, have shown some early signs of weakening. "Reported head-haul and regional container volumes, which are the drivers of rates and prices, profitability, and congestion, were down 0.4 percent y/y and 1.4 percent y/y respectively in March 2022 but remained 11 percent and 1.8 percent up in March 2019." Though still high compared to the pre-Covid market, there has been a noticeable impact on rates and prices as well as activity in the asset markets, BIMCO said. "The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) has slipped 12.6 percent from its peak in early-November 2021. In the time charter market, rates have slowed a little since peaking in late March and owners have had to accept much shorter time charter periods, which on average are now down to two years from a peak of four years in mid-2021." Even if retail sales begin to slip, it could take a while before it impacts container volumes as retailers likely need to rebuild inventories. In absolute terms inventories are, however, higher than before Covid, and some are finding it hard to find additional warehouse space." In Europe & Mediterranean region, consumers have reported the second-lowest confidence level on record, the report added. "In many countries, the pressure will be even higher than in North America and Europe & Mediterranean as food and energy expenses often add up to a much higher share of disposable income." All in all, conditions for consumers appear to be worsening across most of the world and businesses will naturally be impacted as well, the report said. Supply story Contracting activity has been high since Q42020, and 6.3 million TEUs in new contracts have been signed. "Deliveries of these ships will begin in 2023 but many will be delivered in 2024 and 2025." BIMCO
estimates that the fleet will grow by 3 percent in 2022 and 7.7 percent in 2023, ending at 27.4 million TEUs by 2024. "We believe that congestion will begin to ease towards the end of 2022 when markets enter a slow season. Naturally, it is too early to say whether sufficient landside capacity and efficiency improvements can be made to reduce congestion to pre-COVID levels, but we will assume that drag on effective capacity supply can be reduced to a maximum of 5 percent.” BIMCO Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst, BIMCO says: "Supply is driven by large ships, especially in the 15k+ TEU segment." Rasmussen is expecting profitabiity of carriers to fall back towards a lower level given higher bunker charges and lower forecasts of growth. What next? Indicators point to slower growth in demand for head-haul and regional trades during 2022 and 2023 than the industry was accustomed to pre-Covid. "Conversely, it appears that the fleet will on average grow faster over the two years than in the recent past, and faster than headhaul and regional trade demand." It, therefore, follows that the supply/demand balance will weaken, and this should lead to lower freight and charter rates as well as second-hand ship prices, the report said.
Forex reserves down by $306 million at $601.057 billion MUMBAI: After rising for two consecutive weeks, the country's foreign exchange reserves declined by $306 million to $601.057 billion in the week ended June 3, according to RBI data. In the previous week, the reserves had increased by $3.854 billion to $601.363 billion. It had risen by $4.23 billion to $597.509 billion in the week ended May 20.
FCA declined by USD 208 million to USD 536.779 billion in the reporting week, according to the Weekly Statistical Supplement released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Expressed in dollar terms, the FCA include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. Gold reserves dipped by USD 74 million to USD 40.843 billion.

An attempt should be made to explore traditional mechanisms of trade like barter trade, so as to defeat the implication of sanctions.” During the keynote address, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said, “Both countries are looking for a Preferential Trade Agreement, with a focus on diversifying the bilateral trade basket to include manufacturing, services and light engineering items. The PTA will allow the two countries to cut tariffs on each other’s products. India & Iran are active players in the INSTC corridor which has assumed greater importance in view of war between Russia and Ukraine. There is a need to bring Chabahar also under the
INSTC so as to forge partnership with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries besides using the important route of Bandar Abbas. Indian exporters are keen to use the route which reduces voyage time to Central Asia by 40% and cost by 30%. Unfortunately, no single agency has come forward to provide an end to end solution to the logistics. The security of the cargo throughout the route has also been highlighted as a key concern. We will urge the Hon’ble Minister to look into the same and coordinate with other countries as well to push increasing cargo through this route.” Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPA, provided a brief insight on the recent developments in the Port of Chabahar. Concluding the interactive session, Shri Khalid Khan, Vice President, FIEO mentioned, “Although the bilateral trade has declined over the past few years, what matters is the positive approach our governments have when it comes to strengthening and promoting our bilateral trade. Having a positive approach is the first step towards achieving positive outcomes.” He also stated, “Hon’ble Prime Minister always inspires us to find opportunities in difficulties and focus on solutions rather than problems. General Hospital, Bhuj. 83 units of blood were collected in a very smooth manner.
