HMM joins forces with CMA CGM on TTI Algeciras operation SEOUL: HMM announced that the company has signed a sales and purchase agreement with CMA CGM for the sale of its 50% stake minus one share in Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTI Algeciras), a container terminal in the south of Spain. Shares of TTI Algeciras are owned by HMM and HT Algeciras which is a special purpose company wholly con-trolled by HMM. HMM directly owns a stake of 50% minus one share, with the remaining 50% stake plus one share held by HT Algeciras. HMM has decided to sell its own 50% stake minus one share but still maintains its position as the largest shareholder through HT Algeciras. Nitin Gadkari exhorts Industry to identify sectors to boost Exports, Make India ‘Self-reliant’ NEW DELHI: Asserting that a case study is in the offing based on three years of imports and exports, Gadkari said China’s 70 per cent of exports pertained to ten sectors that included electrical machinery and equipment accounting for 26.09 per cent of its exports worth USD 671 billion and machinery including computers grabbing 10.70 per cent of

its exports worth USD 417 billion. To boost ‘self-reliant India’ endeavour, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently urged the industry to identify the sectors heavily reliant on imports, particularly from China, and look for substitutes towards indigenous production to make India a super power. HMM joins forces with CMA CGM on TTI Algeciras operation Cont’d. from Pg. 3 HMM expects a great synergy effect based on strategic cooperation with CMA CGM in terms of enhancing profitability and operational capabilities by securing additional cargoes. HMM official said, “TTI Algeciras has a great geographical advantage to play an integral role as a trans-shipment hub located at the centre of containerised cargo flow on main trade lanes. We believe TTI Algeciras will take centre stage in the Gibraltar area as it has a high potential for future growth and development. We are expecting more business opportunities in the years to come based on stable operations of the terminal.” This transaction, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to be completed in Q4 2020 for joint operations to be started. Meanwhile, TTI Algeciras was formerly operated by Hanjin Shipping but HMM acquired a 100% stake in the terminal in 2017. TTI Algeciras is located in the south of Spain, a strategic point in the Strait of Gibraltar, is the first semi-automatic terminal in southern Europe and the Mediterranean area. TTI Algeciras counts with a total area of 357,740 square metres and initiated its operation on May 2010, with a maximum handling

capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. The terminal can accommodate the latest and future generations of ULCVs (Ultra Large Container Vessels) with an equipment of 8 ship to shore cranes, 32 automatic stacking cranes and 21 shuttle carriers.

“Dubai Trade” launches “ZADI” unified platform to support food security and facilitate food import in Dubai DUBAI: DP World, UAE Region’s single window platform for crossborder trade — has announced the launch of ZADI, a unified food import platform aimed at facilitating the import and re-export of food shipments throughout Dubai ports. The first-of-its-kind platform in the Middle East is part of Dubai Trade’s plan to be the leading integrated platform in all import and re-export services. It also aligns with the UAE plan for the post-COVID-19 era that will ensure the country’s robust recovery and development. Initiated by the Dubai City Makers of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai, and through synergy of efforts between DP World-UAE Region, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Customs and Dubai Trade; the platform is positioned to help over 18,000 companies in Dubai execute 360,000 transactions annually via its streamlined process. Mohammed Al Muallem, CEO and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said: “The launch of ZADI by Dubai Trade comes as part of our commitment to fulfilling the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make the UAE one of the leading countries worldwide in the post-pandemic economic Mohammed Al Muallem recovery. This end-to- end integration allows us to offer our online services and logistics capabilities to the world, helping secure vital food supplies, both locally and regionally.” Typically, Dubai Customs conduct security and customs inspections at Jebel Ali Port and Dubai Municipality teams check food safety and quality. The new system enables customers to submit their requests for both food or customs inspection via one unified platform which reduces their operational costs in addition to saving time and effort. On a short-term phase, it simplifies the integration with Dubai Customs, to control Eng. In the long-term, the platform facilitates the release of imported food and unifies service delivery channels to meet the customers’ expectations. ZADI also gives decision-makers proper insight by providing integrated and comprehensive data which enables them to track local and external food supplies to secure our strategic food reserve.” Through ZADI, traders can access food products either to sell in the local market or for re- export. They can easily request food evaluation form for the first phase instead of accessing several websites. The unified platform enables them to submit their requests for both food or customs inspection. Thus, the process is faster and more efficient. This helps companies reduce their operational costs, increase their profitability and eliminate manual transaction costs. Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Director General of Dubai Customs, said: “Since the world after COVID-19 is unlikely to return to the world that was, we are confident about ZADI’s capabilities of being a ‘Game-Changer’ in food trading business. In Dubai Customs, we deal with food shipments carefully and sensitively. Through the new platform, we will accelerate customs inspections and clearance of food shipments. NDB-Maersk partner to help exporters tap new global market opportunities COLOMBO: National Development Bank (NDB) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Maersk, under NDB’S novel ‘Jayagamu Sri Lanka’ initiative, as a means to support exporters and to benefit exporters with services and expertise in the shipping sector. Expressing his views, NDB Bank Vice President SME, Middle Markets and Business Banking Indika Ranaweera said, “Developing the SME sector in Sri Lanka by providing tailor-made solutions has always been an important aspect of the NDB Jayagamu Sri Lanka initiative. With a reach of 343 ports globally in 120 countries, Maersk is able to connect Sri Lanka to the world and offer its solutions in inland transport, customs and regulatory clearance, warehousing, consolidation and distribution globally to NDB exporters,” Ranaweera added. Maersk will also assist with the NDB Exporters Network by connecting Sri Lankan exporters with the relevant global buyers, providing contact details, providing Sri Lankan exporters with knowledge on the regulations of different countries and different product standards required. RCL and Gold Star Lines launching Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam service SINGAPORE: The Regional Container Lines (RCL) and Gold Star Lines are launching a new service connecting Port Klang, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. The new service, RHS03, targets companies relocating production to Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. It will commence on 18 August from Ho Chi Minh City with a 900 teu vessel.

An RCL spokesperson commented, “With companies relocating their supply chains to South East Asia and Vietnam in particular, both our COC and SOC customers alike have requested us to improve our sailing frequency and connectivity between Ho Chi Minh to Singapore and Port Klang. “This new service will complement the RHS1 for Ho Chi Minh/Singapore/Ho Chi Minh by providing our customers with both a mid and end week window ex Ho Chi Minh for their connections in Singapore and Port Klang to the rest of the network for both SOC and COC customers”.

Nitin Gadkari exhorts Industry to identify sectors to boost Exports, Make India ‘Self-reliant’ Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Asserting that a case study is in the offing based on three years of imports and exports, Gadkari said China’s 70 per cent of exports pertained to ten sectors that included electrical machinery and equipment accounting for 26.09 per cent of its exports worth USD 671 billion and machinery including computers grabbing 10.70 per cent of its exports worth USD 417 billion. Road Transport, Highways and MSME Minister Gadkari while addressing a CII event “India@75 Summit – Mission 2022” urged the industr y to look beyond metropolises and developed cities to lay a network of industries and ventures in

rural, far-flung and tribal areas which never grabbed attention. “It pains me that 90 per cent of the focus of industry bodies is on major industries in big cities and metropolises. There is seldom any focus on rural, tribal and remote areas. There is a need to change it… Advance sector wise planning is the need of the hour to make India a super power,” Gadkari said. “China’s 70 per cent of exports are from 10 sectors,” Gadkari said and urged CII to identify what was imported in India and how can that be replaced with indigenous production for ‘self-reliance’ while assuring all Government support in this initiative.

He said of the China’s exports, apart from machinery and equipment, furniture and related things accounted for exports worth USD 100 billion, plastics products (USD 84 billion), vehicles (74.40 billion) and clothings (USD 66.80 billion). “CII should identify sectors to boost exports and reduce imports. In some areas we will have to increase import duty to encourage Indian manufacturers,” he said. Assuring all possible help to the industry for making rural and tribal areas their hub, the minister said a wide network of highways, railways and waterways was bound to bring down logistics cost.

Chinese Exports to India crash 24.7% in 2020 NEW DELHI: Mainland China’s exports to India since January 2020 have fallen by 24.7 per cent year-on-year to $32.28 billion, customs data from the Chinese Government has shown. China’s imports from India have also gone up 6.7 per cent since January this year to $11.09 billion. Consequently, total trade with India has registered a slightly lower 18.6 per cent drop since the beginning of 2020 to at $43.47 billion. However, in July China’s exports saw a slight jump to $5.6 billion, up from $4.79 billion in June, 2020.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced restrictions on import of television sets late in July to encourage local manufacturing. In the financial year 2019-20, India had imported TV sets worth $300 million from China and $400 million from Vietnam. The total value of imported TV sets during last fiscal stood at $781 million. The Government is also planning to impose licensing requirements for import of goods from 20 sectors, including furniture, toys, sports goods, textiles, air conditioners, leather, footwear,

agro-chemicals, CCTVs, ready-to-eat food, steel, aluminium, electric vehicles, auto components, TV set-top boxes, ethanol, copper and bio fuels, to boost local manufacturing of these items. Reports have suggested that India is also looking to hike customs duty on imported active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) by 10-15 per cent. The Indian pharmaceutical industry depends heavily on imports from China, with 68 per cent APIs and more than 90 per cent antibiotics being sourced from the neighbouring nation.

India attractive proposition for UK businesses exploring alternative to China: UKIBC NEW DELHI: India is an attractive proposition for UK businesses looking for alternatives to China, in view of the prevailing sentiments globally, the UKIndia Business Council (UKIBC) has said. The UKIBC's first Indian Group CEO Jayant Krishna recently said he expects to see growth in UK-India trade as both countries come out of the coronavirus crisis, asserting that UK businesses are very keen to support India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' mission. The bilateral trade between the two countries stood at USD 15.5 billion in 2019-20 as against USD 16.87 billion in the previous fiscal. "UK and India have started looking at opportunities emanating from the business sentiments worldwide to explore

manufacturing supply chain possibilities as alternatives to China," Krishna said. He observed that UK industries have long investments in India across sectors and the country is an increasingly attractive proposition for businesses looking to explore alternate destinations for their global supply chain. "Moreover, UK businesses are and will look to India as an incremental base for manufacturing and research and development," the UKIBC Group CEO said. He said there are great complementarities between India's needs and the UK's offerings and it was very positive to hear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the centrality of sectors such as manufacturing,

infrastructure, energy, pharma, space and defence, to global cooperation. "These are all areas ripe for India-UK collaboration in creating 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', underpinned by both nations' strong track-record in technology and innovation," Krishna said. With the UK forging a new trading relationship with the world into 2021 and India establishing itself as a major global player, India is a key priority for trade and investment of the UK Government and businesses, the UKIBC Group CEO stressed. He said the introduction of the UK's new point-based immigration system and Graduate Immigration Route will make it easier for Indians to come to work and study in the UK.

Around 327 items form 3/4th of imports from China, ‘can be alternatively sourced’ finds a ThinkTank Research NEW DELHI: Around 327 products — ranging from mobile phones and telecom equipment to cameras, solar panels, airconditioners and penicillin — accounted for nearly three-fourths of the imports from China, a study has estimated, while pointing out that it is possible to find alternative sources to get these goods or manufacture them in India. A paper by policy thinktank Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) used UN Comtrade data to estimate the value of these "critically sensitive imports" at $66.6 billion in 2018 in

overall imports of a little over $90 billion. In 2018-19, official numbers had pegged imports from China at $76.4 billion. A product was considered sensitive if China accounted for over 10% share of imports or if the value of shipments was $50 million or more. "Such export monopoly of China has to be diluted in view of strategic requirements," the report said. In terms of the number of goods imported from across the border, the share of the 327 sensitive products was less than 10% of the 4,000-odd items that were imported from China. The study,

estimated that in case of 82%, or over 3,300 products, China was not the most competitive producer. The report’s author, S K Mohanty, told that in several cases, domestic production should be encouraged, something that the Government is trying to do through the incentive scheme for production of mobile and electronic goods and pharmaceutical products. The Commerce and Industry Ministry has also identified a dozen sectors, raging from furniture and footwear to air-conditioners, where it is seeking to provide sops.

Shipping Orderbook shrinks to 17-year low on Covid-19 impact : BIMCO OSLO: Newbuilding orderbook across all ship types has touched its lowest point in 17 years against the backdrop of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to Bimco data. For the container shipping segment, the orderbook has fallen 10.3% in the past 12 months to its lowest level since September 2003. Dry bulk shipping at 63.4m dwt orderbook is the lowest level since April 2004 and 34.7% smaller than 12 months ago. In the first seven months of the year, contracting for dry bulk carriers is down 65.6% from the start of the year and orders for new containerships are down 37.7%. The falls have in particular been driven by the scarcity of new orders as the drop in trade volumes and long road to

recovery looms, according to Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst of Bimco. “Contracting activity has been quick to feel the effects of the pandemic with owners and investors showing little appetite for new ships,” Sand observed. Newbuilding deliveries, however, have not been heavily affected by the pandemic. Total deliveries are down 1.7% in the first seven months at 46.4m dwt. Deliveries of dry bulk ships are considerably higher than last year: 31.8m dwt in the first seven months compared to 22.6m dwt in the same period of last year. In contrast, deliveries of containerships are down 39.5% from the same period last year. But as deliveries have still outpaced new orders, the orderbook has contracted. This year’s deliveries include nine ships above 23,000 TEU.
