Deendayal Port welcomes Maiden voyage of M.V. E-SHIP 1 Malara Shipping were the Agents & Stevedores GANDHIDHAM: The M.V. E-SHIP 1 was recently given priority berthing at CJ-15A for loading 15 Windmill blades of 78.5 Meters, which was on a Maiden voyage at DPT and was one of the unique ships to have berthed in recent times. This vessel uses wind power to generate electricity while in the sea for running the generators on-board. Use of fossil fuel is limited for her stay in the harbour. The Agents and Stevedores were Malara Shipping Pvt. Ltd. The Loading was from Deendayal Port to Vietnam Port. Cont’d. Pg. 6

Gujarat Maritime Board conducts a 3 day Leadership Development Programme for its Senior Officials at IIM-Ahmedabad AHMEDABAD: Senior Officials of the Gujarat Maritime Board including heads of departments, took part in a three-day Leadership Development Programme at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The programme conducted on 2nd to 4th September 2021 is the first module of a series of planned Leadership Training Programmes to be conducted for the senior officials of Gujarat Maritime Board. The programme was organized in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and was delivered by its expert faculty and leading expert academicians in the maritime sector. Cont’d. Deendayal Port welcomes Maiden voyage of M.V. E-SHIP 1 Malara Shipping were the Agents & Stevedores Cont’d. from Pg. 4 “In fact before 2 months we loaded first time 78.5 mtrs cargo of Wind blades from Deendayal - kandla on mv ROLLDOCK SKY. The entire operation was carried out under special trained team for wind energy of Malara Ship, informed the company MD Aashish Joshi.

Gujarat Maritime Board conducts a 3 day Leadership Development Programme for its Senior Officials at IIM-Ahmedabad Cont’d. from Pg. 4 A range of topics related to the maritime sector were covered as part of the 3-day session, including port operations and management, contracts, capacity planning and expansion storage and layout, human resources, in addition to topics related to strategic d e c i s i o n making and finance. The learning was augmented through the use of case studies related to the Indian context which helped the participants b e t t e r understand how to apply the concepts taught to solve real-life problems. As part of the programme, renowned academicians including Prof. G Raghuram- the former director of IIM-Bangalore and Faculty of IIM-A including Prof. Chetan Soman-, Prof. Akhileshwar Pathak, Prof. Shailesh Gandhi, Prof. Sunil Maheshwari and Prof. Vishal Gupta led insightful and interactive sessions for the participating officials of the Gujarat Maritime Board. The session was very well received by the 50 officials of the Gujarat Maritime Board who attended the training programme. The training programme was envisaged to enhance the capacity and skills of senior officials of the Gujarat Maritime Board and reflects its commitment to promote excellence in the maritime sector of Gujarat and India. Programmes such as these would invariably drive better efficiency among the senior workforce in the Gujarat Maritime Board, which would ultimately benefit the entire maritime community of Gujarat and would spill over its benefits to the allied sectors and the economy as a whole.

Commerce Ministry recommends Anti-dumping duty on Vitamin C from China for 5 years NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry’s investigation arm DGTR has recommended the imposition of antidumping duty on Vitamin C, used by pharmaceutical firms for medicine production, from China to guard domestic manufacturers from cheap imports. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has concluded in its probe that the imports from China are entering the domestic market at price below the level of the selling price, and even the cost of sales.

The domestic industry has been impacted due to the dumped imports, DGTR has said in a notification. “A c c o r d i n g l y, d e f i n i t i v e a n t i dumping duty…is recommended to be imposed for five years from the date of the notification to be issued by the Central Government, on all imports of goods…originating in or exported from China,” it added. In international trade parlance, dumping happens when a country or a firm exports an item at a price lower than

the price of that product in its domestic market. Dumping impacts the price of that product in the importing country, hitting the margins and profits of the manufacturing firms. According to global trade norms, a country is allowed to impose tariffs on such dumped products to provide a levelplaying field to domestic manufacturers. The duty is imposed only after a thorough investigation by a quasi-judicial body, such as DGTR, in India.

Commerce Ministry noties procedure for imports under India-Mauritius trade pact NEW DELHI: The commerce ministry has recently notified tariff rate quota (TRQ) for certain items including pineapples, tunas, beer made from malt, rum and procedure for imports of those goods under India-Mauritius free trade agreement. The India-Mauritius Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA), a kind of free-trade pact, came into effect from April 1. The pact covers 310 export items for India, including food and beverages, agricultural products, textile and textile articles, base metals, electricals and electronic items, plastics and chemicals, and wood.

Mauritius benefits from preferential market access into India for its 615 products, including frozen fish, speciality sugar, biscuits, fresh fruits, juices, mineral water, beer, alcoholic drinks, soaps, bags, medical and surgical equipment, and apparel. “TRQ for items…on India-Mauritius CECPA and procedure for such imports is notified,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a public notice. Items that are permitted under TRQ under the pact include pineapples (1,000 tonnes at 30 per cent duty), lichi (250 tonnes at 10 per cent duty), tunas (7,000 tonnes at zero duty), and beer made

from malt (20 lakh litres at 25 per cent duty), rum (1.5 million litres at zero duty). The DGFT said all applications must accompany a pre-purchase agreement from one of the eligible exporters of specified items in Mauritius. “At the time of clearance of the import consignment, the importer in India must produce a certificate of origin issued by concerned authorities in Mauritius,” it said adding that the year in respect of these imports will be from April to March 31. Allocation will be made equally among the eligible applicant subject to the quantity applied.

Container Lines rack up ‘amazing’ $28.6bn prot in Q2 LONDON: Container lines racked up a staggering $28.6bn in profits in the second quarter of the year a 13-fold improvement on a year earlier. The McCown Container Results Observer reported that the 11 container lines that publicly report results made profits of $18.44bn. The 11 lines represent 64.5% of the sector in teu capacity and based on the assumption that the lines which do not publicly report had similar per teu results the total profit for the sector in Q2 2021 was $28.6bn. The “amazing” second quarter 2021 profitability compares to $2.2bn in the

same quarter in 2020, which was in line with historical averages. The second quarter profit eclipses the already record breaking first quarter of 2021 profit of $19.1bn by some $9.5bn. In the final quarter of 2020 container shipping made a $9.1bn profit. “By any and all financials, the 2Q21 results were by far the best actual quarterly performance by the container shipping industry in its history,” the report published by Blue Alpha Capital said. Revenues for the sector in the second quarter were $88.9bn equating to net margin of 32.1%. “I never actually

expected to see an actual net income to revenue margin of 32.1% for any major container shipping company, let alone for the entire industry,” John D. McCown, the founder of Blue Alpha Capital said. Placing the staggering Q2 2021 results in some historical perspective McCown notes that it was only the fourth quarter of last year that cumulative five-year sector result went into positive territory. Over the last 22 quarters the net container shipping sector result stands at $54.9bn, on estimated revenues of $1.4trn, generating a net income margin of less than 4% over the period as a whole.

Export Promotion Council for EOUs and SEZs seeks SEZ inclusion in duty remission scheme NEW DELHI: The Export Promotion Council for EOUs and SEZs (EPCES) recently sought the benefits of the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme to be extended to special economic zones and also urged the government to allow them to sell goods in the domestic tariff area. “We have submitted a proposal before the government to cover SEZs and EOUs too under the new RoDTEP scheme,” said EPCES Chairman Bhuvnesh Seth, adding that the government has assured that a committee is being set up to look at the issue.

The scheme was notified for 8,555 products including employmentgenerating marine, agriculture, leather, and gems and jewellery sectors in August and aims to refund exporters duties and taxes such as VAT on fuel used in transportation, Mandi tax and duty on electricity used during manufacturing, that were so far not being refunded. On the issue of sales to DTA, Seth said the goods can be sold on duty foregone basis rather than the present arrangement of payment of full customs duties. At present, SEZs are allowed to sell their products in the domestic market

but after payment of customs duty. The council has also sought that SEZ units be allowed to do job work for DTA units, grant of infrastructure status to get to priority lending at cheaper rates, simplification of norms for de-notification of zones and exit processes and flexibility of utilization of non-processing areas by developers for creation of social infrastructure. EPCES expects exports from SEZs to touch Rs 8 lakh crore in FY22 from Rs 7.55 lakh crore in the previous fiscal. As on August 31, there were 379 notified SEZs of which 267 are operational and 5,559 approved units.

Agri exports play important role in doubling farmers' income; need to boost farm shipments: Govt NEW DELHI: Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal recently said agriculture exports have an important role to play in doubling farmers' income, and stressed the need for boosting India's outward shipments to be among top-5 nations in farm exports. Goyal and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar addressed the second day of the Chief Ministers'' Conference on initiatives and schemes of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, according to an official statement. Tomar said the Union Cabinet recently approved the National Edible Oil Mission (NMEO-OP) for palm oil with a focus on the northeast region and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Through this scheme, he said the production of edible oils will be accelerated in the country, thereby reducing the import of edible oils.

While addressing the conference, Goyal said the central government is working in close alignment with the state governments to transform the future of farmers. He said food security is synonymous with farmers'' security and reforms for farmers have put India on the path of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Agriculture exports have an important role to play in doubling farmers' income and India should aim to be among the top-5 agri exporting nations, Goyal was quoted as saying in the statement. India's export of agricultural and allied products in 2020-21 grew by 17.34 per cent to USD 41.25 billion, as per the government data. Talking about ''One District- One Product'', the minister said 106 products have been identified from 103 districts and districts should be promoted as export

hubs to ensure that local goes global. He informed that red rice is now being exported to USA and Jackfruit from Tripura is being sent to the UK. Free Trade Agreements are being worked out for better markets. A presentation on themes of the conference was made by Additional Secretary Vivek Agarwal. He outlined the vision Atmanirbhar agriculture that will transform farmers into entrepreneurs with higher income and better quality of life, make India the food basket of the world and make agriculture the go -to investment opportunity. To achieve self-sufficiency, 10,000 farmer-producer organisations (FPOs), export- oriented clusters, organicoriented clusters, and digital agriculture would be set up.

Daily generation of e-way bills rises in early September (MoM) NEW DELHI: Daily e-way bill generation for goods transportation under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system came in at 20.97 lakh in the first five days of September, 7.5% higher than the daily average for the first eight days of August, indicating continued momentum in economic recovery. The daily average e-way bills for the first five days of September were, however, marginally lower (1.4%) than the daily average of 21.26 lakh for the full

month of August. The daily average was 19.5 lakh in the first eight days of August. Going by the recent weekly trends, the daily average is expected to pick up further for September when data for the full month is captured. Between September 1 and 5, as many as 1.05 crore e-way bills were generated. Thanks to easing of lockdowns, eway bill generation by businesses rose to 6.59 crore in August from 6.42 crore in July and 5.5 crore in June.

The gross GST collections came in at Rs 1.12 lakh crore in August (largely July transactions), up 30% on year but down 3.8% on month, signalling an ongoing economic recovery but suggesting that activities aren’t picking up evenly across sectors. GST collections, after posting above Rs 1lakh-crore mark for eight months in a row, had dropped below Rs 1 lakh crore in June 2021 due to the second wave of Covid-19.

Snowman begins operations of new temperature controlled warehouse in Siliguri BENGALURU: Snowman Logistics has completed the construction of a temperaturecontrolled warehouse at Siliguri with 4032 pallets capacity and the facility has become operational from September 6, 2021. It is a multi-temperature facility designed to store products ranging from ambient temperature to -25 degree celsius with 8 chambers, 5 loading bays with related infrastr ucture that includes G+5 racking system, modern handling equipment, etc., and ample refrigerated truck parking space. The facility will mainly cater to the storage, handling and transportation of seafood, ready-to-eat food, ice cream, dairy products, quick service restaurants, confectionery & bakery products, fruits & vegetables, pharma, and other products. A similar facility is under

construction at Coimbatore and is expected to be ready and operational by end of October 2021. Snowman also has built an ecommerce backend (fulfilment centre) for food and grocery in Mumbai. The facility is already operational. It is a 54,000 sqft warehouse with freezer, chiller, ambient storage with various value add facilities viz. sorting, grading, packing, labelling, etc. Another ecommerce facility is under construction at Pune and is expected to be ready and operational by mid of September. Snowman has also expanded in their existing locations: Mumbai (1944 pallets), Krishnapatnam (560 pallets). Expansions in Palwal are under construction adding 720 pallets. With the addition of the above, Snowman will have a total of 1,20,000 pallet positions of shared warehouses and 1,10,000 sq. ft. of e-commerce fulfilment centres by October 21. With these expansions, Snowman would

have operations in 17 cities and 38 warehouses. Prem Kishan Dass Gupta, chairman, Snowman Logistics, said, “I am happy that after a small pause, we are back with our expansion strategy. The expansions at existing locations are to take care of additional volume from customers, and the new locations are helping us offer larger geography to our customers.” Sunil Nair, CEO & whole-time director, Snowman Logistics, said, “We see huge potential to profitably expand our business. No quick fixes for supply chain frictions : ING Research AMSTERDAM: During the summer, demand for traded goods has remained strong as the US and eurozone economies have seen activity increase. But a gap has opened up between global demand and the capacity of ocean freight to deliver. New lockdowns to combat the spread of the Delta variant of the virus are causing fresh problems for supply chains that are increasingly visible in low stock levels, rising lead times, and materials shortages. Ocean freight capacity is struggling to meet demand Global port throughput and new export orders Lockdowns affecting key hubs of global supply Local lockdowns are having global consequences by affecting hubs of global supply and ocean freight capacity. Factory closures in Vietnam in recent weeks have disrupted the supply chains of major clothing, footwear and electronics brands, as well as Japanese car manufacturers. And the closure of China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port in midAugust follows the lockdown at another major Chinese port, Yantian, in March, which saw the port operating below its full capacity for several weeks. Each setback causes a fresh set of problems for supply chains, most obviously through the delay of key inputs, but also the displacement of containers, which in turn makes it even harder to catch up again. As a result of congestion in ports, less than half of ships globally have been arriving at their scheduled arrival times through 2021, and delays for late ships are consistently adding more than a week to delivery times. between Asia, Europe and the US has recovered to levels before the major lockdowns in 2020, but this capacity is being tightly managed by shipping companies in their alliances. Blank sailings (container ship journeys being scheduled, but then cancelled) have caused around 10% of scheduled capacity to be cut at short notice through the first half of 2021. On current plans, cancelled sailings will fall to around 4% in the second half of the year. The cancellations are partly shipping companies’ response to delays, and therefore likely to remain a source of uncertainty for exporters and importers during the pandemic recovery, and even as capacity is expanded through the building of new container ships. In the meantime, each new disruption to production and ocean freight capacity will continue to see supply chain problems build up quickly and then linger, with no quick fixes in sight. Frictions won’t be forgotten Frictions are adding to other trade barriers which have arisen during the pandemic. Emergency measures to secure supplies of medical goods and food, as well as the subsidies to

domestic industr y from stimulus programmes, have made it more difficult to export to foreign markets – something that had already been becoming more difficult before the pandemic, partly thanks to the USChina trade war. And there is no appetite to bring trade barriers back down. Policy efforts in China, the EU and the US seem instead to be focusing on reshoring in key sectors, with a new push to develop domestic capabilities, especially in technology, and create a degree of independence in the supply of essential medicines and technology goods. If policies, along with the frictions that have built up in supply chains, lower the relative costs of producing at home, this may tilt the balance for some supply chains to be brought home. Any changes are likely to be slow, as reshoring is difficult and costly. However, the ongoing disruptions to supply during the pandemic have brought the risks of using global supply chains into focus. The sudden and persistent rise in frictions during the pandemic won’t be forgotten as firms decide whether to adjust supply chains.

CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal Starts A New Chapter MARSEILLE: The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, started its terminal operations at the port of Kaohsiung as CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal Co, Limited (CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal) on September 1st, 2021. This follows a 20-year terminal lease extension agreement which the Group has signed with Taiwan International Ports Corporation Ltd. Sam Chou, General Manager of CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal said, “Our renewed terminal lease that runs till 2040 is currently the longest contractual commitment made by a foreign entity in Kaohsiung Port. Equipped to handle ships of up to 14,000 TEUs, the CMA CGM terminal offers an annual capacity of 1.3 million TEUs. With a productivity rate that tops 35 container moves per hour, the terminal runs on the Computer Automatic Terminal Operation System that optimizes productivity with six quay cranes – four with twin-lift capability and an outreach across 22 container rows; as well as two single-lift cranes with an outreach across 18 rows of containers. ISO 45001 certified, the 101-acre terminal provides a comprehensive suite of ter minal operation ser vices. It comprises a 21,000-TEU yard that is supported by 19 rubber tyred gantry cranes and 12 container handlers; two container freight stations; three maintenance and repair workshops; and 2 gas stations that provide a one-stop logistics support to shippers.
